Jake is talking about Leicester City's massive legal win through an appeal which should almost certainly mean no points deduction despite breaching PSR rules during the 2022-23 season. Jake also reviews the Aston Villa defeat and looks ahead to the next couple of matches.

Hello and welcome to daily Leicester as part of the global sports podcast network. My name is Jake Leverland and you joined ah during the international break and this is one of our episodes while we wait for the Premier League season to carry on after these international fixtures.

Leicester City's Successful Appeal Against Points Deduction

00:00:24
officialgspn
Today I'm going to talk about start with the PSR ruling the Leicester City have won on appeal a pi ah massive moment for the club not just in the season but going forward potentially um something that certainly I didn't expect to especially so early in the season for a judgment to be made um so what the Premier League said so far
00:00:43
officialgspn
is that obviously Leicester City originally lost the case and the Premier League ah wanted to bring charges which likely from what I've read would have come with a points deduction ah possibly up to around seven points based on the ah for the 22-23 season um however Leicester City as I say have won on appeal which means there won't be any charge or there can't be any charges brought unless the Premier League appeal ah this decision which obviously Leicester have won on appeal. um It remains to be seen whether that happens, it seems unlikely at this point that it will um and for now it it appears that Leicester aren't going to ah can't be and won't be um given any sort of points deduction or charge ah based on their financial accounts for the 22-23 season um based off a very reptile um journalist site this is what they had to say on it and i'm i'm quoting them uh lester have successfully argued that the points of the breach was the end of their accountants a year in 2023 which was on june the 30th
00:01:50
officialgspn
ah Just two weeks before, they had handed over their membership in the Premier League to Luton Town. Celeste's argument was that they could not be held for a breach of Premier League rules when technically they were not a Premier League club at the point of breach. The decision to move their countenance a year, which they were entitled to do so, has effectively saved the club.
00:02:09
officialgspn
um The Premier League understandably aren't very happy about this, they're disappointed and surprised and they feel like it undermines the enforcement of PSR regulations and could allow clubs to evade accountability under similar alert circumstances in the future.
00:02:25
officialgspn
um Evativly, obviously we saw Everton and Nottingham Forest given were points of deduction last season, based on ah how much they've spent over the the margin, um but because Leicester City were relegated ah but that has been the argument that as they were relegated they couldn't be charged and effectively in a ah strange sense ah being relegated has saved the club from a a points of deduction at least for now. um Of course there's still the accounts for the 23-24 season,
00:02:55
officialgspn
and the EFL did try to punish the club last year and the the club was in and under a transfer embargo from February and obviously if Leicester had remained an EFL club ah for this season hadn't been promoted last season then ah potentially we we could have seen a transfer embargo ah which included contracts couldn't be renewed we could have seen that carry on um which could have been absolutely disastrous for the club for starters Jamie Vardy wouldn't have been allowed to sign a new contract ah so almost certainly would have spelled the end of his time of the club um and it again remains to be seen whether there's still some charges brought during the course of this season and ah based on those financial accounts that were brought or examined during the 23-24 season.
00:03:44
officialgspn
But for now, we we need to look forward and for the club it's absolutely monumental news. um The Fanta, we're all absolutely elated on the episodes that I've done so far. um I've have spoken, I think I've probably mentioned in all of them that it seemed likely we would have some kind of points to do this season. um The outcome that we wouldn't to be honest never really seemed possible to me and i didn't want to dare to think that actually somehow we wouldn't and and let's be honest we've exploited a loophole we've certainly got away with one it was never ever argued that the club hadn't breached them they clearly had
00:04:20
officialgspn
um and as I say from from one journalist side that I saw it sounded like we could have been ended up with six or seven point deduction um because of the X amount of millions that were over and how Everton and Forest were similarly punished as we say last season but now we can go for a much more positive mentality obviously we have only picked up one point so far this season however home games against Aston Villa and Tottenham have finished fourth and fifth respectively last season and um actually isn't too bad a return to minus I think I'm quite happy ah certainly with the performances in the second half against Tottenham overall against Villa ah the one at Fulham was much more disappointing although we only lost by a goal and we've got a better run of fixtures coming up albeit that Arsenal game sort of sandwiched in between um some fixtures in and around so against teams that probably going to be in and around us this season so
00:05:18
officialgspn
um They'll be vital to the important games because if if you don't pick up the points against those sides, we're going to make it tough for ourselves.

Hope for Leicester's Future After Appeal

00:05:24
officialgspn
um But I guess really my my underlying feeling is one of of hope, of chance. We've got a real opportunity here. um And if we can stay up this season, then and possibly the club can really rebuild and push on, which I think all the fans have felt like the club's been a bit turmoil.
00:05:42
officialgspn
probably for the last sort of at least year or so once light of PSR breaches came came to light you know what a year 18 months ago ah the club has felt in a bit of a mess ever since and maybe we're now starting to see the first signs of the club um on its way back and that was incredibly exciting right now um thoughts on the season so far as I said I've mentioned the games there we've only picked at one point um and in the next part I am going to review the Aston Villa game um but so far the season despite only getting one point it's been better than a lot of fans have expected um we've seen real um
00:06:24
officialgspn
They've had a go. a bit A bit of optimism is definitely in the air. We we felt very frustrated in Zastavilla, probably felt a tad fortunate against Tottenham um and probably a tad frustrated against Fulham. So um it's been an interesting start, but um we've we've lost by a single go in two games. We've we've drawn, um as I say, against a good Tottenham side who I know lost at Newcastle at the weekend, but I'm sure will go on to have a decent season this year and for a side that's going to be in and around the bottom, like I said,
00:06:54
officialgspn
um a point against a side who are going to certainly be challenging for Europe um is not a bad point to get. ah The transfer business um got better eventually as the the window went on. i'm I'm still concerned by some of the signs of the prices paid um but Oliver Skip did have a good debut against Aston Villa. yeah Jordan Ayu I think has surprised myself and surprised fans with actually the quality he brings ah in terms of retention of the ball.
00:07:22
officialgspn
i' actually quite a skillful player, works tremendously hard um and hopefully it we can see some goal threat from him. It's possibly just getting those goals enough throughout the team um and obviously getting that first clean sheet of the season is going to be really important. um But new signing Caleb Okele.
00:07:40
officialgspn
Oricoli made his first league appearance. He played in the Cup match against Tremere, but first league appearance against Aston Villa. I'm really, really impressed. um I was very happy with him. um He's certainly a lot quicker than having Yannick Vestergaard at the back.
00:07:55
officialgspn
um and it meant possibly at times we could play a little bit higher than we would against Stegarda, we took a few more risks um and obviously we were 2-0 down in the game ah but it allowed us to to push on and and try and find a way back into the game and we weren't that far from that, and you know, ah Villa are great with their offside traps, we saw it all last season and those couple of times were offside um and it's just, you know, little moments where a bit more quality and maybe on another day we we might have got that second goal against Aston Villa at the weekend.
00:08:30
officialgspn
ah Before I go into a more um detailed review of the Aston Villa game, a quick advert.

Controversial Referee Decisions in Aston Villa Game

00:09:04
officialgspn
So ah looking now back to the Aston Miller game, so this is a number of days after the match um and obviously yeah I've had time to calm down ah but my my overriding emotion coming out of the ground is one of great frustration firstly at the referee. um Now obviously i've I've had time to watch things back again and say calm down and and look things at a more level-headed approach but I still feel a little bit of frustration from the referee I just thought generally throughout the game he was was poor um he made some strange decisions both him and this assistant referees for both sides and if you come out of a game and and you're thinking sometimes he gave us us things and
00:09:46
officialgspn
that I was wondering I'm really not sure about that and equally there was decisions I thought Aston Villa got that I really disagreed with and and the main ones that the free kick that led to the guard went and first and foremost I should say that it's a brilliant move and and obviously off the training ground from Aston Villa really clever it's a really clever block in there from Pal Torres which um allows jacob ah Jacob Ramsey to run through and allow to slide the ball across it's incredibly clever and and obviously we probably could have defended it better by having
00:10:17
officialgspn
one extra player within that gap would have made a big difference. So we have to look at ourselves. But, uh, equally, I ah don't think it was a free kick. Uh, I, I sit behind the goal, uh, the Villa attacking in that first half, uh, to me and in the ground, it looked like, uh, all of us got the ball and I know the replay makes it look a bit more like a 50 50 in fairness. Um, I still feel like he got the ball. It wasn't a foul. Uh, actually a Coley on the halfway line took out, I think it was Morgan Rogers.
00:10:47
officialgspn
that was most certainly a free kick there was no debate in that and i think that's what should have been given as the free kick on just after the halfway line where obviously Aston Villa wouldn't have been able to to do that routine from and of course that does not mean that we would have gone on to to certainly even get a point or win the game and Aston Villa may well have still won and at that point Villa have also had a couple of good chances you know Matt Hermanson made a great save from Ollie Watkins, there was another one where Watkins tried to go to round Hermanson, so Villa had their chances and probably leading one at a half time wasn't an unfair reflection of the game, it's just that frustration that the goal came from a moment which I don't think should have occurred like that, but one at a half time was probably
00:11:35
officialgspn
um Actually probably a fair reflection in terms of those chances that we didn't do so much in terms of creation in that first half um I think it was a coley from a freak it just for half time went somewhat close but but again wasn't really a moment I ever felt like we were necessarily going to score and we we didn't create enough in that first half. ah The team selection was interesting from Steve Cooper Wilford indeed playing off Jamie Vardy almost um I think was was possibly an idea to try and win the ball high up at more high up the pitch um and disrupt Aston Villa It didn't quite work. Off the ball, I thought he he was OK. He did what he was in there for. The issues were um he didn't win too many of his duels. His first touch was poor. He gave the ball away um and he did generally struggle. I thought personally a lot of last defense, I think, would agree with that, that he he struggled in that high position. um And then when we saw Buena Notte and Bilal, who's just come in from ah Belgium, the Moroccan, he's just come in.
00:12:39
officialgspn
I saw those two come on, the quality they bring made a real difference to the team. um And possibly if one of them started in that sort of number 10 position, and maybe we would have created more earlier. um So there is a bit of frustration there. um As I mentioned earlier, Oliver Skip, I think, had a good debut. ah Impressed, he he played a little bit higher, for further forward, a bit higher up than I expected. um Got in between the lines quite well, got on the ball quite well, and made a decent impact. But really,
00:13:09
officialgspn
um Despite sort of huffing and puffing and having a bit of a go um during the early parts of that second half and again there was some moments with the referee that were really frustrated and there was a moment where ah we played a pass through and it it hit the ref um and we played on and and so well we played on and scored ah but the ref had played his whistle and there was a lot of frustration because i think people ah fans in the ground and in around me didn't understand that one um in true fire actually spotted at the time that it hit the ref again it's frustrating because we were we were building a move but
00:13:42
officialgspn
that one I don't think the referee could have done very much about that one hit him but I think there was three or four times in the game it actually hit the ref um on both sides blocking um almost attacks or or passes out ah and it is frustrating it keeps hitting the ref and the game keeps breaking down and and there was a lot of niggly fouls in the game from both sides and Villa are very good at breaking the game up and I understand that's their game plan but it it builds our frustration um when it's happening ah constantly at different points of the game and as I say the game's not really being allowed to fly. um Villara of course went to Naluk during that second half, and they made a couple of subs and and almost instantly John Duran who'd come on for Olly Watkins again in and then around that 60 minute mark which he's done in every game. It's a great header over Hermanson, fantastic header and at that point you know I'll be honest I was wondering would we
00:14:34
officialgspn
have the resilience would we possibly crumble a little bit allow them to to to start to steamroll us and the absolute opposite happened steve cupid made the subs and the argument could be made that possibly they should have come a little bit earlier but it's very set out hindsight and the subs he did make ah made a great impact maverdeedy he's obviously the main one that I need to mention um hasn't started in any of the games um certainly now after he came on and made such a great impact against Villa ah he didn't obviously get the assist but it's his work down that left hand side for us getting past Bogard who's making his Aston Villa debut
00:15:13
officialgspn
It's a good cross and obviously've indeed he heads it down and was a brilliant finish from Wenonate. Mamadi didn't get the assist but it was his work that made the goal and he was a threat once he came on and and it certainly has friends including myself questioning why he hasn't started to any games. um Abdul Fatah with my massive fan armour but didn't really get into the game and sometimes wasn't given the ball to be allowed to be you know, to get himself into the game. um So I'd certainly like to see Mavdi starting the next match, possibly with Jordan Iu playing off the right side this time. um But Steve Kupini has found a way to get Mavdi in the team. He was brilliant for us last season. he' such He makes such an impact for us, especially in that final third of the pitch. and He can go past a man, he can score a goal and he can create, you know, and we really need all those qualities from those attacking players this year because
00:16:04
officialgspn
I was going to say, well, we we were not going to have so much of the ball, but um that wasn't the case on Saturday in Justin Villa. Actually, we had, I think 57, 58% possession. um Villa had a plan. And obviously it works because they won the game 2-1, but they played differently than I expected. and And obviously we built up those possessions that sort of towards the end of the game as we were chasing.
00:16:28
officialgspn
Again, there was there was frustration towards the end of the game, towards the ref. um There was a moment with Yuri Tillamans and Jamie Vardy where um I think it was a quick free kick played into the box. um Again, if I'm honest at the time, I didn't think it was a penalty because it it looked like Tillamans had won the ball. ah But I was frustrated because ah I didn't see how it could have been asked to be thrown in. um And even when I watched the replay, to be honest, I couldn't quite tell.
00:16:56
officialgspn
um and it's it's one of those incidents where I get it's difficult for the ref and you know after you calm down I look and go okay and now I understand but in the ground it's another one that's just building that frustration and building um and then again in stoppage time Jamie Vardy went through was was found by Esri Kondza yeah he was a fair by his reconza and then um unfortunately he was obviously offside for us I think the referee didn't initially give the penalty and then realised that his system referee had had the flag up and Vardy was obviously correctly offside so um and that was just frustrating from ah from a game point of view because that was our last chance and obviously you know if you have a penalty in the last minute then there's no better opportunity to take a point from the game um I think 2-1 probably in

Pride in Team Despite Loss

00:17:46
officialgspn
It was a very scrappy game. um To run Villa so close, I was actually really proud of the team. they pushed, they were ah proactive in trying to get back in, they had a real go, um and there's no shame ah being beaten by a goal by Sadhu, you know, who were playing the Champions League this season, they they came forth, they were a really good start, they are a really good start still, and there's absolutely no shame in that, um and hopefully the team has learnt a lot from that game, um and as I say, this next run of features that certainly on paper look
00:18:18
officialgspn
ah easier. There'll be more pressure because there's opportunities to win and we really need that first win now. It's so imperative. We've got Crystal Palace in the next one away before we host Everton and of course were beaten by Bournemouth in that ah crazy game at the weekend. um Before we then travel to Woolsell in the League Cup, sorry, and then we travel to Arsenal in the Premier League. um Before I sort of have a look at those games ah to finish off the podcast, one more quick advert

So as I say, our next game is away at Crystal Palace after the international break, who themselves haven't had the best start and will certainly be looking to build on the end they had to last season and put right some of the wrongs that they've had so far this season. And they got a good point against Chelsea at the weekend on Sunday, coming from the goal to nil down to get a point. They were a great goal from Eberique Giese.
00:19:58
officialgspn
we've got a little bit of a yeah mixed record against Crystal Palace um normally at home we've been fairly good ah good over recent years and but Selhurst Park has been a bit of a bogie ground of ours especially within the last three where we haven't won and when we were beaten by them last time it was John Felipe Mateta with a last minute goal ah that actually spoiled the end of Brendan Rodgers time at the club um At the time we thought that you know him leaving would ah guess be a real catalyst for the the club to hopefully get away from the relegation zone and and that never happened and we ended up being relegated. I guess ironically um it was that goal from Mateta that would have been one extra point ah which would have made all the difference for us in the end. so
00:20:45
officialgspn
it's funny how things work out but in some ways you can see that goal um if we draw maybe Brendan Rodgers wouldn't have lost his job and and maybe wouldn't have gone down so ah all ifs and buts but it's strange how circumstance can sometimes play like that um I know myself, ah've I've been to Crystal Palace in the away end, on a few occasions.

Personal Anecdotes and Upcoming Matches Preview

00:21:05
officialgspn
and My first away match i was at Crystal Palace when I was was just a kid. It was the opening day of the championship season, so so many years ago now, and a very young Wilfred Sahar. I don't know if it's his debut, or it might have been his first start, I think.
00:21:21
officialgspn
um and I think certainly it was his first goal for Crystal Palace, he he was probably about 17 at the time, within the sort first five or ten minutes he had mistaken the back from one of our defenders and and he broke through and scored and at the time he was going, or who's this guy and and we weren't to know that he was going to...
00:21:39
officialgspn
ruin our defence for the next few years and and was always brilliant when he played against us. and I do wonder if he he thinks back to that first game against us. Every time he used to play against us and and they gave him a bit more of a springy step when he used to play against Leicester. but um yeah and An old school ground for Selhurst Park. Once they get on top of you, the fans and the players, it it can be really difficult. I'm expecting a difficult game. and Oliver Glasner obviously impressed highly last season. He's got a great reputation in Europe.
00:22:09
officialgspn
ah manager I really admire I rate very highly um obviously they've lost Joachim Anderson um or oh you know chose to sell him it depends how you look at it ah but they retained Mark Gurhey and obviously he's a fantastic defender and makes a big decision difference in having Isaiah in there so I think Palace are going to build and grow as the season goes on and hopefully that doesn't start with a victory against us and as I say we we we really need that first victory of the season and it's obviously a cliche and obvious thing to say but the longer you go without one the tougher you'll get. um I suppose for us though if three games in there's a number of sides also in a similar boat Crystal Palace so one of them haven't got a win yet this season
00:22:50
officialgspn
um So two teams looking for that and there's a number of teams in and around us who are thinking exactly the same thing. um And then out after Crystal Palace, um Everton, who obviously as I mentioned had a bonkers game against Bournemouth, managing to to somehow lose from 2-0 up with just a couple of minutes left to play, obviously they did have a lot of extra time in the end.
00:23:12
officialgspn
um and then just I guess I want to finish with a little look that will probably get overlooked in those few weeks, you know, away game at Wolves or in the League Cup. You know, being in the Premier League is an opportunity to progress through the Cups and it's not our our main aim by by any stretch of the imagination. Staying up this year is is complete priority.
00:23:30
officialgspn
and but we have a ah big squad, um I think we have a squad that can at least push through the rounds, it depends on on who you draw but you know we're playing against a league two side who are actually not starting the season too badly, had a steady season last year, almost ah ended up really quite close to the playoffs at certain points towards the end of the season but didn't quite get there.
00:23:51
officialgspn
um It's a title we should be looking to get through and but also I think it's an interesting one because it's a you know a Midlands two Midlands clubs And again when we paid them last time was the year that we got relegated from from the Premier League so not that long ago it was Kalechi and Atreus who scored the winner and in a narrow 1-0 victory, so um hopefully the game will be a little bit more comfortable for us this time, um but we will see. So, that's all I've got to really talk about today. I'm sure the next time that you're going to catch me will be the crossover episode before that Crystal Palace match next week. so
00:24:25
officialgspn
ah For now, ah I guess we'll enjoy the England matches or we'll hopefully enjoy them over the weekend.

Support for Local Football During International Breaks

00:24:31
officialgspn
and I think it's also a good opportunity if you're missing football while your Premier League team is not playing. To go watch some local football, some non-league, I'm a bit big advocate for going to watch your local sides, especially during international breaks and and giving some money to non-league clubs. and actually um You might be surprised by the one the quality of the football but also the enjoyment you can have on a Saturday afternoon So for now, goodbye, and I'll see you soon
