Hello and welcome back to Thursday edition of the Daily Ipswich brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network and of course as it is your Thursday edition, it is not just Daily Ipswich today, it is our crossover Thursday and this week I'm joined by Jake Levelyn from Daily Leicester. How are you doing mate?
00:00:27
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, I'm good.

Leicester City's Early Season Optimism

00:00:29
Speaker
I'm feeling more positive than anyone who's listened to daily Leicester and some of my ah negativity in the early weeks with some of our results. But now i'm I'm feeling more positive despite the forest game and really looking forward to chatting about it, switching Leicester and the match of the weekend. Yeah, it's looking forward to, aren't we? I think we we were just saying before we came on air that it's nice to actually have one of these crossovers where we've got a reference point of haven't played each other recently because certainly in our case when you haven't been in the league. and 22 years is quite often these crossovers. We don't get that advantage. We can look back to last season and say how that differs from now. So it's nice to actually, so apart from when we play Southampton the other week, it's nice to have one of them games in it.

Upcoming Match Strategy against Ipswich Town

00:01:08
Speaker
But yeah, we'll dive in today. Yeah, we'll dive in. We'll obviously cover both teams suspecters as we always do in the in these crossovers and in the final part of today's show. We'll me and Jake will dive in a bit deeper and give our sort of personal views on how we see the game pan out and
00:01:24
Speaker
see if either of us are confident of picking up a result on Saturday afternoon. But as you as you're the away team, you're visiting Portman Road on Saturday, Jake. So i'll I'll throw it to you first. So before I ask you about the game itself and how you're feeling, so season

Leicester's Season Challenges and Tactics

00:01:40
Speaker
so far. So obviously, I think, is it 16th, 15th in the table, somewhere like that? Five point gap over the bottom three? Yeah, which is us at the moment. So are you pleased with the start?
00:01:52
Speaker
Yeah yeah obviously the first few games it took us a while to win I think our seventh game it was against Bournemouth and then obviously we'd be Southampton on the back of that so yeah it was an okay start where we got some points which was obviously important with a new manager you know quite different this season in the way we're playing But yeah, it took us a while to get that first win, but we've got some encouraging draws against Tottenham, even Everton to be honest, where we didn't play particularly well, but we've we've managed to get results and then obviously to come back against Southampton was fantastic. So yeah, there was some negativity to start with and some concern and obviously we just played our rivals not in forest and been beaten. and
00:02:32
Speaker
a couple of couple of days ago at the weekend or on Friday night. and So that that has put a a little bit of a dampener on, you know, two positive results. And it it probably makes Saturday for us an even bigger game because obviously you just said there were five points ahead. So, you know, a victory for us will increase that margin while a defeat makes it ever so tight. So, yeah, it makes it even more important game on Saturday. Yeah, like you said, ultimately,
00:03:00
Speaker
same position that we'd obviously love to be and that you don't really care how it goes as long as long as you're above that bottom three you're not really bothered about how the games play out or if it's been a poor season on terms of performances or whatever as long as you're above that bottom three that's all you can care about really isn't it? Yeah, I think in these early games because we had a new manager and you know that's where we differ from from yourselves in Southampton in terms of ah you've retained your managers yeah from the promotion team and squad. Arts has obviously us moved on to Chelsea so we've now got Steve Cooper. So in terms of how we were going to play there was that
00:03:34
Speaker
view and and intrigue in terms of the performance and stuff and the performances have been there sort of in 45 minutes spells across all the games we've we're managing to put 45 minutes in and not always a 90 minute performance which is disappointing and even in the the win over Bournemouth and Southampton we were much better in the first half against Bournemouth obviously rubbish in the first half against Southampton but managed used to turn the game around in the second half so yeah we're trying to look for sort of ah at least a 60 minute plus performance but yeah so far we're we're good in one half pouring the other so I'm hoping we're going to sort of iron that out as the season goes on.

Managerial Changes: Mariska vs. Cooper

00:04:10
Speaker
You know it's the sort of main differences between Enzo Mariska and Steve Cooper as they on paper but they seem very different is ah is it as big of a shift as it looks like from afar?
00:04:20
Speaker
Yes and no actually, so ah Cooper would like the ball still, he he wants possession but probably a different style of possession, Mresk was very happy with the centre backs to hold the ball for long periods, Cooper isn't so interested in that, although and anyone who watched the game, it's not in Forest, especially in the first half would have noticed, regarding Pereira, like last season moving into midfield, so we we looked more like a Mresk style, but other than that one game though, we've looked quite different in terms of having more traditional fullbacks, wing backs at different points, you know, going forward and a more structured shape, ah less fluid in the way we've built up in the play. So, yeah, so the similarities and differences that there obviously is that difference. Cooper's also good at ti setting the team up to counter-attack and generally I think we've been better when we've been able to counter-attack this season with him.
00:05:11
Speaker
And I think that could be one of the the interesting points on Saturday see who ends up holding the ball more as obviously both our games last season We held on to the ball far more in in both foot for more periods because that was how we were wanting to and only when and we sort of sat back or were being put under a lot of pressure and by yourselves, by Ipswich, that was where, you know, you started to dominate the game. I don't think it'll be anything like that just in terms of we don't want the ball quite as much and holding it in those those passive areas at the back. Yeah, I think it'll be interesting to see how it differs from the both games last season in the championship were really entertaining and late drama in both through very well matched games, I thought over both times around. I think it'll be interesting to see what, like you say,
00:06:02
Speaker
The biggest change will probably be the fact that ah be asked especially it especially the important road on Saturday, that will turn up and have more of a ball, which was completely the opposite of how how it played out when we played each other. I think it was Boxing Day at what I think the important game, the important road was last year. But it'll be interesting to see how it plays out. But so we'll we'll go back a bit in more in depth towards Saturday's game then. So ah say the form coming into it hadn't been too bad. Horrible defeat on Friday night against against Forrest, which I'm sure nobody is pleased about in the Leicester camp. But I think generally, I should um preface this as well is that at time of recording, we don't know how the AFL Cup game with Matt Old Trafford has gone for you yet. So for all we know, you might have gone there with all the news coming out of there this week that you could have gone and got a fantastic result and gone through that we have no idea how that goes. So just on the league form, how you feeling and going into
00:06:55
Speaker
yeah ah i will briefly mention the cup match because if i'm honest i'm not really too fussed whether we we progress or not because our priorities stay in the league this season and obviously you don't want my concern might be because they've changed obviously 10 hogs left today or yesterday, sorry, that maybe that gives them a real boost and we end up struggling and we're we're probably going to massively rotate the side and and we end up shipping a few goals. That would be my concern. It's going to knock conference. I just don't want that. But in terms of progression, I'm not too fussed. But yes, I've mentioned the league's been a steady build.
00:07:33
Speaker
Generally, you know, if we get a point a game and and you end up with as many points as you've played games, we'll probably be fine. this And at the moment, we're bang on target nine points from nine matches. Yeah, the first match was hard to take in terms of it's your local rival and really poor second half performance. The scoreline didn't flatter, not in forest in any way.
00:07:54
Speaker
They were much the better side in that second half and had lots of chances. And and that was what was disappointing is when the subs were made by Steve Cooper, it didn't change the game at all. It didn't positively impact it from our side. And they just had more chance. They just didn't take. So, yeah, as I say, that has brought a bit of negativity back. And there there is a concern from myself and the fan base that because he's ex not in forest, because there's been some strange choices in tactical decisions,
00:08:23
Speaker
so I'm concerned that maybe fans will turn if we have a bad string of results that we get to have in terms of like Three or four defeats on the bounce And we've got after Ipsos, you know, we've got Manchester United in the league Obviously we've got them in the cup and then then we've got Chelsea so we've got some tougher games for sure to come up so that that might bring pressure if those results and the one on Saturday don't go the way that we we need and want and Yeah, I think obviously it seems a stupid question to ask, really, but how important do you think it is to go and get a positive result? for Like you say, that the gap is five points at the moment. obviously if you Hopefully, in my case, if Town pick up a result, that gets cut to two, and then you look at the next five game or the next five or six games you've got coming up after that. You mentioned United and Chelsea, you've got Brighton and a Newcastle coming up in the next five or six games as well. that is it Does it feel like already like a six point, though, as much as it does for us?
00:09:19
Speaker
No, I wouldn't I wouldn't I would be hesitant say six-pointer because the Southampton game certainly felt like that And that was obviously that they're in a you know, they've got less points in the and more perilous position. They're really struggling so I'm gonna hesitate no, and but it will certainly increase the pressure big time because if we can win on Saturday, then we're eight points clear of yourselves then suddenly actually you look at the next four and go well, I if we only win one of them or even pick up a draw then we won't be in too much trouble. However, if we lose on Saturday and then that scenario plays out in terms of the the points after then we could well be in the bottom three and then suddenly there's going to be big pressure on Steve

Leicester's Relegation Zone Strategy

00:09:59
Speaker
Cooper and the team. So it is a massive game for sure and I think for us not losing is vitally important.
00:10:07
Speaker
Whereas possibly from the outside, outside looking in, up I would have said, I feel like you need to win the game probably more than us to get our first win on the board, because I know from our point of view, yeah it took us, as I said, to the seventh game, the pressure just builds and builds until you can get that first win. And it is a massive relief when you do. Yeah, exactly. I think from our point of view, also, I'll get into our side of things a bit more in a minute, but especially with Palace picking up their first win on Sunday, that we've always sort of had that that thing of being with just a above the relegations and we can hang on. We've always had that to hang on to. And obviously we've lost that now because it's another team that have picked a winner up that didn't have one previously leapfrogged us in the table. It's just a reminder of how tight it is because we were hovering over there. But even like a Southampton win, I think, brings some level points to us, which is then already like what you think you're like you're playing a bit better and it looks fairly comfortable. All I've got to do is win a game. And suddenly it's right back close to this point that the pressure is on that.
00:11:07
Speaker
Yeah, we'll see it obviously still a long way to go, but it does feel like a very, ah very crucial game from outside of things Saturday, definitely. But like I say, we're gonna have a quick break now from to hear from one of our sponsors. And then when we come back, I'll be delving a bit more into the Ipswich side of things. And I'll be letting Jake quiz me about anything he wants to know from the tractor boys point of view.

and we are back for the second part of today's crossover thursday so jake i'm gonna throw the floor over to you now mate is there anything you want to ask me sort of about town season so far or going into the game on saturday Yeah, there's a few things that I'm i'm interested in. I'm going to and let's start with a road question just to to start off with.

Impact of George Hurst on Ipswich Town

00:12:20
Speaker
and He obviously started on Saturday, and yeah George Hurst, who came through, well, he played for our Academy, bought from Sheffield Wednesday, and then was was obviously on loan at yourselves, and then we sold him at the start of last season. Yeah, it was that his first Premier League star, or at least he he started as Brentford in for
00:12:39
Speaker
What do you what's your thoughts on George Hurst really is his overall flip switch this season as a Premier League striker? What do you think? It's hard to answer for this season, really, because like I say, he has just been injured the whole night. He didn't as his full debut Saturday. And I've seen I think he's had one or two cameos off the bench, but he has had injuries. And but in terms of what he's done from that initial loan spell and then into ah obviously the full season last year, it's been incredible that is such a huge loss. but Obviously, we managed to fill the gap in the end with... it's so The timing of the injury last year was quite convenient for us. the fact I think... so that Was it against you guys on Boxing Day, actually, that you got up as injury? I think it might have been. I believe so, yeah. Yeah, but ah luckily, obviously, when you get injured right at the end of December, you've got January there, but I think had he got injured ah more... inc In fact, if he got injured so of February time, I honestly think that could have been the difference between not getting promoted.
00:13:38
Speaker
He was such a huge, he's such a huge miss. He's been so important ever since he came in. And it's only really been the phenomenon that is Liam Delappe coming through the door that is sort of stopping him from being straight in and just see the quality still there from Saturday. Like I say, full Premier League debut. He scored one, set the other one up in that first half. For the long parts of it, we were were the better team and looked comfortable and shipped two goals in with five minutes to go and made it a very nervy,
00:14:07
Speaker
second half where we sort of went downhill from there, really. But overall, like because you can't fault the impact he's had. We wouldn't have spent the money we did on on him to get him back as a permanent if he wasn't a key player in the system. Because I think people sort of miss out the fact of how he links to play. I think people just look at him and just think, big tool striker must be a target man, gets on the end of all the cross and everything. But it's actually more a case of He tends to, I don't know what the final stats were for the season, but there was definitely points last year. He had more assists and goals because he just, we sort of send it up to him. He'd hold the ball up and then just release it round for one of the wingers to burst in behind. And that's how we'd make our chances. And he maybe arrived late. for I don't think people expect to see that from him if they've not watched him before. So I think he's he's got a massive part to play, definitely. ah do I don't think he'll displace the lap as number one, but I think
00:15:02
Speaker
off the bench he can cause real problems this season? Yeah, two two good options, who are obviously very capable of scoring his first show on Saturday in dilat with his five goals already this season, yeah for sure. The next one's going to be, I'm sure you've probably talked about him lots already, Calvin Phillips is obviously coming on loan. and ah you You know, you feel free to disagree with me. He seemed to start quite slowly, ah just in those early games, and he hasn't played a lot of football for quite a while, so probably to be expected. Has his form picked up? What have you thought of his performances in in the last couple of games? He's very hit and miss, is the best way I can say it really, because I thought, I mean, to be fair, you can say this about the whole team, not specific to Calvin Phillips, but if I take two performances out, that
00:15:53
Speaker
I think they were like, they might've been the games directly after each other. I think might've been one in between, but Aston Villa at home, brilliant round the show as long as he was on the pitch. I think that was his first game back from a little knock. It was unbelievable. I was like, generally the team performance is brilliant. Then West Ham, we go follow that up, not everyone's spirits are up. When we go to West Ham, I think it was the week later. And then he was probably the worst of the bunch in what was a general, what was a really poor team performance. And you just think that there was,
00:16:24
Speaker
such a big drop it's like from a from a nine from an eight nine out of ten down to like four out of ten in a week and it's just that he's there's no sort of pattern to his play some games he just fits him really well and looks brilliant and some games he doesn't and my thoughts on him honestly i was saying in this last week when we had um lydia from daily brentford for the crossover last week and she asked a similar question that my views haven't changed and when we sat down on our podcast and he when he was just a rumor and I always thought it was a big risk. And I'd rather have looked at somebody a bit more established and has played, played consistent football for a couple of years is on form. Oh, and there's obviously he has spent the last two years either playing very poorly at West Ham or out injured pretty much, which is so hard to expect him to
00:17:17
Speaker
return to levels that are now sort of three, four years ago and you think the lead stays and then that fantastic euros he's had there a long time ago now, and especially in football in context that always thought it was a risk and that had potential to blow up in our face.

Calvin Phillips' Performance Risks

00:17:30
Speaker
And I still think that's the case to be honest. I still feel like it could, it could go either way still. He could suddenly click into gear and be brilliant, or he could just get a seasoning and injury or start playing poorly. And it all looks like a waste of time. I honestly, like I say, it feels odd that when that nine games in, I'm still making the same points I was back in July, whenever it was really. I respect that that honesty and an honest ah assessment of of his time so far. And yeah, you're absolutely right. I completely agree. You know, the Euros was three years ago, over three years ago now. And and since then, yeah, he he's last two seasons for sure. He really has struggled to get minutes and good minutes really under his belt with good performances.
00:18:15
Speaker
um Switching to Kieran McKenna and sort of objectives I guess for this season in terms of, you know, if you can try and stay up, but obviously he was linked with Brighton in the summer.

Kieran McKenna's Future with Ipswich

00:18:28
Speaker
Tensive links for Chelsea as well.
00:18:31
Speaker
in terms of his future past hopefully this season up up from a again neutral perspective I would be really good at seeing him leave I'm quite surprised but you never know in football and if anything can shock you but yeah realistically you know he's with complete respect to him so he's going to move on to to bigger things at some point because he's clearly fantastic coach manager and what he's done is incredible. yeah what What do you think of him overall, the future? yeah What are your thoughts? Well, it's yeah he's unbelievable. I don't think you'll find anybody around this area, even if they whether they like football or not, that's got a bad word to say about him. The best managers do is they get themselves, is that they make those sort of connections with
00:19:22
Speaker
off the pitch as well, not just on the pitch. They don't just turn up and treat it as a job. They get fully involved with the community and just a general area and that's everything he's done. look i I think we were talking about this the other day because obviously that he's got that past relationship with Man United. We were saying sort of his name's not on there but is he going to be somewhere on their list maybe down the line with everything they've sort of merry-go-round they seem to have every couple of years but i Like you said, it'd be disappointing. I honestly don't think he'd leave mid-season. I think it's only it ah don't think he'd assign that contract in the summer ah if he if he wasn't fully committed to seeing the year out. I just don't think he because of the relationship he's built with the club and just the kind of person he is, I don't think he'd ever walk mid-season. No matter how good the opportunity it was, I think he'd always you maybe provisionally agree but to go in the summer. I don't see him ever walking midway through. but
00:20:15
Speaker
We quite simply just have to stay up if we've got any chance of holding him. There's no way, we said it again, from before this season started, he will be a Premier League manager next season, so we've got to do everything we can to make sure that's still with us and we're not down in the championship with someone else. Yeah, yeah he I think, yeah, a great summary of of where he's at, where the club's at, I mean.
00:20:37
Speaker
The game outside perspective, you know I i was remember watching like League One games and you were playing and and stuck there for you know

Ipswich Town's Rise from League One

00:20:45
Speaker
a number of years. And to go back to back, obviously finished second both times, which is so strange to think that you didn't win either title. But yet, to be honest, at points last year, you know you you're the best team in the league at points last year for sure in League One amongst Plymouth and Sheffield Wednesday in ah in a great race.
00:21:05
Speaker
which again for a neutral I loved watching but yeah you know what he's done the amount of points and actually every time I've managed to watch you this season I've i've really enjoyed watching you I like his style of football yeah you can see that connection which I don't think you get unfortunately very often these days you can really see in the way the team plays the fans get behind everything it's not just about winning or losing it's just about everything connected and i think yeah so that's it quite rare to see that now um but yeah encouraging that clubs are still doing it yeah i guess yeah last question but you know before we go to adverts and move on um do you think you can stay up this season and and and how can you do that i i think it i'm still really like all of us we say it all again we feel like we have to it's like an automatic defense we have to put in on the monday review and we've lost again that like
00:21:59
Speaker
At some point, I just think we'll click and put that run together, whether that's after the first win and it's the confidence. But I think at some point in the season, we will just have a run. We get sort of like 13 points from 15 available or something like that. We'll just go off. I'm so confident there will just be that run of games and especially in recent years. So the quality seems to be getting a bit down the bottom, seems to be getting a bigger drop off from the rest of the table sort of every year, really, that I think you only need one of them runs really. And that can be enough to keep you up that you could, we could have that run. So if we win Saturday, we could then go on that run between now and Christmas or something where if we get a good run of games and that probably give us enough points to play with that we could stay above a couple of teams. Cause like I said, we're not been, I can't say we've been playing poorly cause performances have been there, but we're not been getting a result. Like I said, we haven't won a game. It's the 10th game of the season on Saturday. We haven't won, but yeah, we only, dropp we only dropped into the relegation zone on Sunday. So we've always been that point of,
00:22:59
Speaker
we've we've been managing to keep teams below us. There's still two teams below us now, like I say, still haven't won a game that the fact we've got that sort of starting point that I think it just takes that one run of games. And I'm not sure as I was previously, they will be after that first win and kick straight on. But I do think there'll be, I think there'll be a point where we do just hit a run where we have like sort of run effort and are on now where they just go sort of four or five games unbeaten and then that'll probably just give a bit of a stop and ground and and especially over the likes of sort of walls in Southampton that you look, if you seem to be really struggling, hopefully that will be enough. But for now, I'm confident that every week we go about getting that first win, the confidence drops.
00:23:44
Speaker
It's tough, yeah. I know you feel it is so took us seven games, I get it. And and and yeah, trying to to stick with that and but back them always. But yeah, to be honest, as I said before, I hope you stay up as well. I think the story of going back to back, a club that was done in such a good way, the way that you play, as long as we're also staying up this year, then I'll be very, very happy if Ipswich also stay up.
00:24:13
Speaker
and yeah woves himself i' sort of really struggling so if you know I guess you're looking at Leicester, you're looking at Palace to drag in there and if you you can keep yourselves in there towards the end of the season, then you've got a real chance. yeah i think we've them and I don't think we're as confident as we were at the start of the season, but I don't think no-one's hit that point of sort of like like no-one's sitting there accepting relegation this early in the season. We all know it's a long way to go and we've got faith in the group of lads we've watched for the last couple of years, because the core a lot of signers came in in the summer, but the core of the squad is still the same team that's come up the last couple of years. We know what we know the fight they'll give. we know that I mean, as you've as you've seen from both games, we played against you in the championship last season. They will fight to the end every single game that we do. We do score late. I mean, obviously, we ended up even Saturday, like yeah, we lost the game to a fairly poor goal in stoppage time. but
00:25:06
Speaker
We were three, two down with 10 men for the last 20 minutes of the game. And we still, we fought and we snatched the goal back and it looked like we were getting a point until the dying seconds. They don't know when they're beaten, which is a brilliant quality to have, particularly in a sort of renegade and scrap. Didn't you get a post for free, which is just absolutely incredible. That belief will carry you so far. And if you can get a bit of luck here and there, then it always gives you a chance.
00:25:36
Speaker
Yeah, i think I think so, definitely. But we'll we'll delve into a game a bit more in the third and final part but before we do. Gonna have a word from another one of our sponsors. Now, when we are back for the final part of today's crossover Thursday, looking ahead to Saturday afternoon action at Portland Road between Ipswich Town and Leicester City. So going on to the game itself. So ask you first, Jake.

Ipswich Town's Offensive Threats

00:26:24
Speaker
So how do you sort of see the game playing out? And is there any sort of particular player from the Ipswich side of things you're worried about or you think could be someone who could cause cause you problems on Saturday? Yeah, I mean, one thing that I'm i'm expecting for sure, which probably won't happen now I say it is both teams to score because we've we've only kept one clean sheet and we've scored in every game um and and obviously it so you know you guys have let in a lot of goals but also scored a lot of goals at a different points.
00:26:56
Speaker
For me, it seems almost inevitable that both teams will score. Obviously, as we've touched on last year, both are 1-0 draws, you know, late goals in both games for yourselves. But I'm not expecting it to play out anything really like those in terms of how the match plays. I mean, could well be a 1-0 draw and there's a late goal and that will massively shock me. But yeah, um' I'm expecting goals from both teams. Connor Chaplin, who obviously has been fantastic for yourselves in the last two seasons with with lots of goals, lots and lots of assists.

Liam Delapp, who's got those five goals already this season. Jack Clark, and there's a few really good you know attacking players that you've got that will certainly cause us problems. Jack Clark, if he plays on that left wing against James Justin, most of the goals we've conceded have come down Justin's side.
00:27:44
Speaker
although it sounds like Victor Christensen, I left back his injures, didn't play against Nighting Forest, so Clarke, if he plays on the left side, then we'll be against Ricardo Pereira, who also didn't exactly shine against Forest if I'm being brutally honest. So yeah, those those wide areas in terms of our defensive positions, I think you can certainly get behind Leif Davis on the overlap. So yeah, I think there'll be opportunities for you to score goals on Saturday. I'm sort of just hoping we're going to hopefully be able to turn you over on the counter attack and get opportunities ourselves.
00:28:13
Speaker
Yeah, I think it'll be i like we said, sort of the start of today's show. I think that it's going to be a different game to what we saw in the championship. From my side of things, I'm fully expecting to be looking at those stats at full time and seeing town as the team have more possession and sort of the team that tries to set the stamp, set the tempo of the game. I think, but you say leicester like Lester, Steve Cooper is a manager who likes to sort of hit on the brake and you've got plenty of pace to do that on the wings with the various options you've got. But obviously,
00:28:43
Speaker
We know that Mavadevi and Fatah were quite well from last year, the threat they composed. But someone who worries me really, when I'm looking at the hipster side of things, someone I've been very impressed with is the man you've got on loans in that sort of number 10 role, Brennan Notte. I've been really impressed with him and what I've seen so far. And to be honest, the cameos he had at Brighton are always were always fairly impressive to me as well. but He seems to have really benefited from getting the game time and I do worry about the sort of threat he could pose.

Brennan Notte's Influence on Leicester

00:29:15
Speaker
Yeah, he is a wonderful, wonderful footballer. I'm praying he's going to be still playing for us after January because at the moment I can't see a way in which Brighton won't recall him, to be honest. um if they I'm sure they'll have that option. I mean, he's got three, four caps for Argentina and this this that isn't that that that is not a mistake. This guy is is the real deal. I think he's going to end up
00:29:38
Speaker
progressing. Again, no disrespect to Brighton, but he's going to progress really high. and I don't know how we've ended up getting him on loan because I can't, but Brighton have obviously started quite well themselves. I just can't believe he can't get in and around their team because, yeah, he's been really key for us. He scored some really important goals, getting us back into games or getting us vital points, obviously scored the winner as Bournemouth came on in and also started, but sort of in Southampton.
00:30:06
Speaker
Yeah, he was a little bit quiet against not in forest, especially in the second half, but he got a bit frustrated. He didn't get many decisions off the referee, to be honest. But yeah, when when he either plays in the number 10 or out out wide right, it depends how we set up. I think possibly he's actually better out wide right for us at the moment, just because he gets a bit more space and he's allowed to drift. Yeah, he he will definitely be a threat setting up or scoring. He can do both.
00:30:35
Speaker
Yeah, he's the worry for me, just wherever he plays, because every week on these crossovers, I always talk about, I always name a right winger as a key player, because you know how we, you know how obviously we like to play. Davis on the overlap gets up and down, that does naturally leave space. Although, actually, less so in the last couple of games, actually, because Grieves is brilliant as he's been for us since he's been injured and Burgess has come back in. You've spotted that, I think Richard on our pod has been making that point to us recently that you can see that relationship there. And Burgess is sort of better at covering that space. The Greaves are still getting used to it. So maybe that'll be better. That's the slight benefit of our best center back being injured is it sort of helps that bond a bit. that So if he's on the right, you can cause that problem. And we've spoken about midfield, obviously, with Calvin Phillips. And it's something we've raised on our part again that the midfield has been an issue in a lot of games. So someone like that pulling the strings, especially when were we don't seem to be sure what our best midfield partnership is.
00:31:34
Speaker
It's the worry for us, but I do agree what you said. i think I think it's a both teams will score game, definitely. I'll just say, I imagine we'll dictate the tempo of the game. Well, obviously we know the threat on the counter attack. um yeah i like so I think I'll be shocked if either team keeps a clean sheet. and But if I think if they do, I think if one team keeps a clean sheet, it's probably been a terrible game, nil, nil, draw. I'm not sure the team's going to win it with a clean sheet intact. but Just to sort of wrap up today's show there, have you got a score prediction for the game?
00:32:06
Speaker
Yeah, I'm gonna go for us to, let's just win 2-1. And yeah, to be honest, I think you made a good point there. If if someone was gonna win maybe a 1-0 or a 2-0, then probably the other team's gonna have missed quite a few chances. And when, you know, you're watching back on match today or wherever, you're gonna go, wow, how have they missed that? Because I think it will be open. I've gone for a 2-1, but it wouldn't surprise me if it ends up being a 2-2, a 3-2. Like, I really am expecting goals just because we give away chances, which is so frustrating. um But equally, yeah, we've scored in every game and we've looked we've looked like scoring and that sounds a bit odd, but we've made good chances. We haven't just scored out of the blue. We've made good chances in almost every game against everyone. So, yeah, I think we will score goals. I'm just hoping we can actually tighten up a bit of the back, because as we've seen on Saturday, when you play Brentford, you know, you can score goals as well. Yeah, definitely. I think Brentford
00:33:07

was a good, was a really positive sign for us to

Ipswich's Goal-Scoring Opportunities

00:33:09

score three goals. Cause we've all seen the stats that came out and match the day after a weekend where we are 19th or 20th and every sort of, although I say every goals, it's actually the chance creation statistics, things like having shots and stuff, because we've actually, these out we've got the same amount of goals as Man United. Oh, it's one more than Man United actually. And the same as new cars, one more than Man United. So the finishing's there, we're just not making the chances in the first place. So that is,
00:33:35
Speaker
from our point of view, where you say that I don't think we we'd be that team where you'd be thinking, oh, they've had four chances and not score because our actual conversion rate isn't bad. It's more it would be more a case of we keep getting the final ball wrong. But I'm going to I'm going to reverse your score line is I'm going to go to one to town. I think generally, I think we share the same thoughts on the game generally. But obviously, we're both slightly biased in terms of what we think the fire yeah score. they do I think that If we are, I think at some point I hope the home form has got to be the thing that turns first. We're more likely to start picking up positive results at Portland Road when the atmosphere is bouncing than we are on the away trips a lot of the time. So, like I said, it's just so, it's so important. Like these sort of games, I've said it every time we've had one where these games, if you're the home team, you absolutely have to win. If the away team, you've got the advantage of all you have to do is not lose.
00:34:29
Speaker
And we done our job at Southampton when we were the away team. And we didn't do our job when we were at home against Everton. So we need to rectify that. Or we are, like you say, if the gap gets to eight points already, it's already starting to look like a long way back, even if there is 28 more games to go after Saturday.
