Speaker
Welcome to Beauty and the Business Podcast. I'm Renee Leone, a beauty entrepreneur, coach, and single mom who built a six-figure beauty business straight out of school. Now, I'm here to help you do the same.
00:00:17
Speaker
If you're ready to stop struggling and start scaling, you're in the right place. Let's turn your passion into profit. Hit play and let's build your beauty empire.
00:00:30
Speaker
All right, everybody, welcome back to another episode of Beauty and the Business. Today, I'm excited to talk about ah to talk about a topic that I'm super interested in. So my background is in product sales.
00:00:44
Speaker
So I've been working with entrepreneurs and product sales for the last 14 years, and I've grown just to love entrepreneurship. I love hustlers. I love people that work hard. I love people that take chances on themselves.
00:00:56
Speaker
And Renee is actually a great example of one of those people.

Career Paths for Beauty School Graduates

00:01:00
Speaker
And so today we get to talk about Renee and we're going to interview her on just some, um some professional choices that she has made because it's come up a few times as we've been talking to recent grads and people that are still in beauty school, um, of just the options that they actually have that they're unaware of.
00:01:18
Speaker
And they're unaware of why they would want to go down that path. And so Renee let's talk lashes.

Renee's Journey: From Corporate to Lash Business

00:01:25
Speaker
Yes. Lashes has been my lifeline or was my lifeline when I was newly divorced, knew I had to go back to school.
00:01:33
Speaker
And basically the search for me started. I didn't know what I was going to do. but I worked in corporate America before oil and gas and it was terrible hours. um And then previously before that, I worked as a restaurant manager, fine dining restaurant manager. So I couldn't do either one of those things knowing that I was going to be responsible for my kids, school pickup and all of those things completely on my own. So i remember scrolling on Instagram and I saw a girl that I went to school with high school with that was doing lashes. And I'd never really heard of that. This is about 2018, 2017. Sorry.
00:02:08
Speaker
two thousand and seventeen sorry And so I kind of asked her some questions like, what do you do? Or how do you go to school for that? And what does that fall under? And she was, she's like, well, in Texas, you just have to have a license. It's a separate licensure.
00:02:23
Speaker
and other states, you have to be an esthetician or a cosmetologist. It's a separate licensure to just do lashes. So like, oh, well, what do people pay for that? I looked at her website. I'm stalking her. you know I'm looking what she charges. She charged like $80 an hour for a fill and $250 for a full set.
00:02:40
Speaker
that So that's when I started to dive in and research cost of product, the amount of time it would take to get my license, and then the amount of income I could make.
00:02:51
Speaker
And when I did the math, I was like, oh, shoot, you could make some serious money working part-time.

The Lash Business Opportunity

00:02:58
Speaker
And in traveling to schools and working with beauty professionals, I've seen that sometimes they go in wanting to do lashes because they've done the math in their head just like me. They're smart.
00:03:08
Speaker
They know the turnaround. They know the return on investment. However, they teach you maybe one or two days in school. And it's like that everywhere, unless it's a specific school catered to lash licensing, which is rare to find.
00:03:22
Speaker
Would that be a set? Do they actually have beauty schools that do that or that yeah is like a secondary education? There's a few, but even those I've i've felt like in talking to women and coaching them that they still just give you bare bones. yeah You're not getting a lot of experience. When COVID hit, a lot of them went to online.
00:03:42
Speaker
um So in Texas, it was 320 hours to get your lash license. Now what I do and what I've developed is like a post- graduation course like a confidence course to teach you how to be faster how to like your technique just your you know the basics the one-on-ones how to get full volume of you know looks um kind of some little tips and tricks on how to lash faster because time is money in lashes um But it's such a lucrative industry. And the main thing that the reason why I love lashes is because you can fill your books quickly because they have to come in every two weeks for fills.
00:04:21
Speaker
So with hair or facials, you know, they can stretch, their roots can stretch out a little bit longer. So we're going six to eight weeks. Some people go... Well, they get their hair done twice a year. right you know if you're doing men's cuts, it's less expensive. People shy away from it.
00:04:35
Speaker
However, those men are coming every two to three weeks to get their hair cut. So when you look at the numbers that way, you don't have to build as deep of a client base or as wide of a client base because they're coming so frequently.
00:04:49
Speaker
And so it's guaranteed set money. So if you're an esthetician listening to this or you're a hairstylist listening to this, and you are struggling to get out on your own, I really would encourage you to take a look at strengthening your lash skills.
00:05:04
Speaker
And we can use that as like, maybe you just do that a couple days a week. um But it's still popular. It's still in demand. Women want it done. They don't go without it. um So yeah, that's what brought me into it. And I think if there's a beauty professional out there that maybe felt like she didn't have good training, then we can help you.
00:05:24
Speaker
what guess So obviously, you know, and to share this with the listeners, I've never gotten my lashes done. Yeah. How long does it take? When you're fresh out of school, brand new, how long would I expect it to take? So for my first full set that I did, I think it took me three hours.
00:05:43
Speaker
And that sounds like torture and trust and belief. It was torture for me, for the client. But that's why you incorporate model pricing. You know, you're going to find people are like, oh, sure, I'll take a three hour nap.
00:05:55
Speaker
Because you do oftentimes fall asleep while you're getting it done. um And you can you know get faster. But that's where I figured out a technique in order to make them go faster and still get that hybrid or volume look.
00:06:09
Speaker
ah how long was exciteded So how long would it take now? So now I can lash a full set in an hour and a half, depending on the client. um And fills, I always allocated about 45 minutes to an hour.
00:06:23
Speaker
And you want your client to come back in the two-week time frame so that they can fit into that allotted fill time. um You can give them a proper set of lashes. Otherwise, they risk you charging them more for a three-week fill or another full set if they come in naked lash line.
00:06:40
Speaker
Now, and with the, I mean, you do such a great job here creating an actual community, you know, being a part community and somebody comes into your salon, like it really feels like a family when you come in. You've done a really good job at that.
00:06:53
Speaker
From a referral standpoint for lashes, ah do you notice an increase? Because you have a lot of different specialties that are here. Yeah. um What's that referral base like for lashes? Because I feel, i outside outside perspective i feel like it would be really high. Like when you see a good set of lashes and you look in the mirror and you don't necessarily love your lashes and you see somebody else, you are more willing to go try.
00:07:17
Speaker
Oh, absolutely. People like to go to who they know because they trust you over an Instagram ad or a flyer in the in the mail. They want to go to who their friends are going to. And so that is another, like we have a lot of family members that all go to our same lash artists or friends of friends that go to the same lash artists because that just organically happens. It is something that has a very high referral rate.
00:07:44
Speaker
um And also, if you are you know not doing lashes full time, it does open them up. Once you grab them as a client for lashes, I can guarantee you they're going to be more likely to book other services with you, like a brow wax or a facial. it's just You're establishing that connection with them into where you're not just their lash artist, but you are who they turn to for all beauty needs, for product recommendations, for

Expanding into Permanent Makeup

00:08:12
Speaker
All of that. So when I first started in lashes, I did that for two years and then I brought in permanent makeup.
00:08:17
Speaker
I thought no one was going to come to me because I wouldn't let somebody fresh out of school, fresh out a training tattoo my face. right But they did. They all like, you can try it on me.
00:08:28
Speaker
like, try this is a semi-permanent tattoo. But they trusted me with the service I already provided. They knew I took such delicate care of them there that it they didn't even blink.
00:08:39
Speaker
And so, you know, with lashes, it's a lot less scary because if you don't like it, you can get them removed. yeah You know, it's not a permanent makeup procedure um or it's not Botox or it's not, you know, something that's really going to alter their face. It's easily adjusted or removed.
00:08:57
Speaker
ah But again, that that repeat business, if you're struggling to get out on your own, let's take it let's take a confidence course. Let me boost your confidence course. I've got one online now that I've just launched.
00:09:08
Speaker
And we can kind of, um'm going to show you how to make and capitalize and make the most money, but also maintain the health of your clients' lashes through technique and also product sales.
00:09:19
Speaker
And then now we're we're based here in Dallas, Fort Worth. Do you have anything in person? I do. Yeah, I can do one-on-one confidence courses with the with the artists where they come in. We do a model. We sit down together and I'm going to figure out with you one-on-one where you need to work on you know your skill set, your timing, application, and then also teach you some more advanced techniques.
00:09:47
Speaker
So, I mean, there's just it's just crazy to me. Like when i'm when I'm looking at entrepreneurship, I'm looking at time, um but you're literally cutting the actual process in half. Oh, yeah. So, Phil's, you know, like I said, everything's going to take you longer in the beginning. That's okay. You just charge less.
00:10:02
Speaker
That's the answer. The only way you're going to get faster is to do more lashes, is to get more clients, is to... So, by adjusting your prices, a lot of... I've seen a lot of... ego in the industry because they see other professionals and maybe TikTok famous or they're, you know, they built their social up before they built their skill set up. And you'd be surprised when you actually go in and talk to their clients, how dissatisfied they are.
00:10:30
Speaker
And so that whole comparison thing, we got to throw that out and you got to work on what are you working on as the artist? Are you working on your speed? Are you working on the application? Are you working on your different styles, different looks?
00:10:42
Speaker
ah different lash types lashes are like hair there's different hair types ah I mean they are hair you know what I mean like we think about that textured hair on our scalp there's also people with different types of textures of lashes on their lash line so all of those things you never want to turn down a client so it all comes with knowledge with mastery with strengthening your skill set That is one of the things I've really appreciated and come to love about the beauty industry is you look on like when I see something again, I love entrepreneurship.
00:11:13
Speaker
And it's like, how is that person making money? you You see something on TikTok. Are they making money from that or are they only promoting or are they promoting like some product that they're selling? Right. Right. Are they promoting a cleanser or a certain lash line or whatever? they're getting they're not getting money from doing lashes. Right.
00:11:31
Speaker
They're getting money from looking like they're doing lashes or doing one or two lashes a week. Yeah. And then turning it into content and then being very good at online or social media marketing. Right.
00:11:42
Speaker
Perfect. That's great. But when you say, I mean, you say it all the time of that comparison is the thief of joy. So as a new lash artist, you compare yourself to that. Like, well, I'm not that good, right? And then you stop.
00:11:55
Speaker
And so that's one thing I love. I love about working with beauty professionals that are, I don't care who makes money online or social media, right? But if you're a social media marketer, you shouldn't really call yourself a beauty professional, right? If you're doing two lashes a week and you're social media marketer,
00:12:12
Speaker
hopefully you're making that clear at some point because I think it is it does add to that comparison. And ah fresh people that are out of school and looking to start a career, yeah they compare themselves to you. But my point is you only have so much time during the week.
00:12:25
Speaker
Right. Like you decide how much you're going to work and then you can actually fill those slots with whether it's a modeling price or whether it's you know your loyal clientele.
00:12:37
Speaker
But you only have so much time that you can fill. And then at some point, your skill set gets so much better that you get rewarded by raising your prices. Exactly. Right? The relationships, the experience, and you can raise your prices.
00:12:50
Speaker
And I always give the tip of set your prices of what your goal price is in a year or two from now and then just run specials. So they know what to expect at the gate. Like, you know, you want to charge $80 a fill, $75 a fill, then put that down into your pricing, but then do your spring special at $60 a fill, $50 fill, new client foreign fills, $45. Like,
00:13:15
Speaker
Whatever it is. And you're always having a reason to market yourself. um But then there's always the expectation that those prices will eventually go back up to this. And there's not that sticker shock that a lot of clients feel taken advantage of. But we talked about this in previous episodes about branding and developing a referral system with your current clients.
00:13:38
Speaker
So keep those clients low yeah that are your referral system, that are telling all their friends and their family. Keep them low and keep them coming. Take all their referrals.
00:13:50
Speaker
um But it's such an untapped market in this industry that so many professionals really shy away from They want to do it. I can see it. They talk about it. But they don't know how to get faster, better. And the only way you're going to do that is by taking the course and by kind of evaluating your skill set where it's at and how many how many lashes do you need to be lashing a week in order to increase that skill level.
