Mindset and Solo Hosting by Damon Rourke

00:00:30
Speaker
Hello and welcome to Beauty and the Business Podcast. My name is Damon Rourke and today am solo without my business partner, Rene Leon. So you guys have me today and today we're going to talk about mindset. So we do have a whole section on mindset on the course that we have for three, course of three right now. It's at beauty and the, or beautyinthebusiness.vip. So you go to beautyinthebusiness.vip and you'll be able to access this entire course that talks about building your business, tips on building your business.
00:00:59
Speaker
you know, applicable tips and business practices that you can place right now that will help you build your business. But what we're going to talk about today is mindset and the mindset behind building momentum and building momentum in a positive direction.

The Momentum Concept in Business

00:01:13
Speaker
So all business is based on momentum. All business is based on building momentum in a positive direction.
00:01:18
Speaker
And momentum is one of those things that it's the, it's the hardest thing to gain. and the easiest thing to lose. So momentum is the hardest thing to get and the easiest thing to lose it. And why is that?
00:01:29
Speaker
It's because it's built upon small, simple action done every day. So habits done every day. And then we added the last little part of building momentum in a positive direction. So what does that mean? What does that look like?
00:01:40
Speaker
means building a positive direction because we all have negative habits, right? We all know the habit of inconsistency. We all know the habit of not building our business on social media. We all know the habit of not following up when we know we should be following up. these are This is building momentum, but in the wrong direction. So that momentum is always working for you or against you.
00:02:00
Speaker
Once you recognize that, you could actually have influence over which direction the momentum is going. So Let's put this in perspective because when we talk about business, we say, okay, but that's business. This is something I've never done before. I'm not good at business. I've never built a business.
00:02:14
Speaker
Whatever excuse you're using, but we do recognize the power of habits. We recognize the power of momentum. We recognize the power of the slide engine. That's a book that Renee and I talk about. A lot of philosophy that we both follow of every decision you make puts you on an upward curve or a downward curve.
00:02:29
Speaker
The goal is to have more decisions that put you on an upward curve. It's not to be a hundred percent. It's literally to be 51%, 52%, 53% and grow from there as far as making good decisions that it influence your life in a positive way.
00:02:44
Speaker
and so we know the power of negative decisions, right? Why is weight loss so hard, right? Why, why is building relationships, new relationships so hard? ah Why is business so hard?
00:02:56
Speaker
Well, It's because we have these negative patterns that we're working. Oftentimes we have negative patterns that we're working against.

Analogy of Weight Loss and Building Positive Momentum

00:03:02
Speaker
And so if you look at weight loss, if you eat a salad, if you replace a cheeseburger with a salad every day, do you lose weight after a week?
00:03:13
Speaker
ah Probably not. But do you lose weight after a month? Yes. Two months, three months, four months, five months, six months. When that becomes a lifestyle, when that becomes habit that builds momentum in a positive direction,
00:03:24
Speaker
That works out well for you, right? And your weight loss journey. If you're going to the gym, if you go to the gym one day and then you look in the mirror the next day, has your body changed at all? No, it's probably, in fact, you feel worse than you did because you're more sore.
00:03:37
Speaker
But if you continue to do that, if you go to the gym three, four, five times a week, if you just say, okay I'm going to go every day for 20 minutes a day. Very, very, very simple habit. I know all of us don't have 60 to 90 minutes to go to the gym and work out every day, but what if you could go for 20 minutes?
00:03:53
Speaker
What if you walked 10 minutes in one direction and then walked back? So you went on 20 minute walk every day. Would you see a difference the next day? No. Would you see a difference in two weeks, three weeks, four weeks, three months?
00:04:08
Speaker
Absolutely. Because we're changing our habits and we're building momentum in a positive direction. And I was trying to come up with different examples of this. And so i was thinking about relationships.
00:04:20
Speaker
Why do we have such strong relationships when we're children, right? When we're in high school, I'm sorry, when we're in elementary school, middle school, high school, even college, why do we build such strong relationships.
00:04:34
Speaker
Well, we're forced to be together consistently over a long period of time. And so we get to know these people. Now, why is it so hard ah ah as an adult? I know we have some people on here that are around their 20, around 20 years old.
00:04:48
Speaker
I'm 41. So this is my perspective on on coming from this. It's very hard to make friends that are, that you're as close as an adult as you had in high school or college. It's really very hard, but it's because you're forced to have that consistency. Every day you're in the same place.
00:05:05
Speaker
Every day you're consistently building that relationship. It's not that way with adults. yeah Hopefully you work with somebody that you can show up to every day and you build that relationship. But outside someplace you're forced to be every day, it's very hard to build a long lasting, consistent relationship that are as deep as those ones that you had when you were forced to be in the same place every single day.
00:05:26
Speaker
and so that's why you see You know, people that spent a long time together that were forced to be together in the same place. And I'm thinking, I'm thinking work, I'm thinking the military, but where you're forced to be together every day, you get to know somebody very well, but that's because you're building momentum in a positive direction. And that's what makes it so hard when you're not intentionally building momentum as you get away from that that consistency that you had before.

Daily Standards and Business Growth

00:05:51
Speaker
And so let's apply this to business. When you're thinking about building your beauty business, What are things that that you need to do every day? Right, let's just start. I don't just want to talk theory and say, well, go be consistent.
00:06:06
Speaker
How do you apply this to going out there and building your business? Well, first of all, what we have to do is establish your standards. Okay. What are the things that you do every single day are going to help you grow your business, grow and maintain your business?
00:06:21
Speaker
And again, go to beautyinthebusiness.bip. ah We have a free course on there. Just take it. You guys just take it. This is based off of 20 years of sales experience for me. Renee has been in sales and then she owns her own her own successful med spa. She's a successful beauty pro.
00:06:37
Speaker
um She has a lot of tips and she's building another business now. She's very successful way and then very good at sharing her knowledge and sharing her tips with you guys. But go there. You're going to get all of that for free, right? Even if you get one thing that's going to help you build your business, like you spend 90 minutes, two hours listening to us talk and you get one thing that's going to help build your business and double your business.
00:06:59
Speaker
Isn't that worth it? Right, if we spent 35, 40 years collectively gaining this information, isn't it worth it for you to go spend 90 minutes but learning about even the mistakes we made? Learn what you don't wanna go and do.
00:07:14
Speaker
Learn what not to do. Go make your own set of mistakes. And that's where that wisdom and experience comes in. But go gain your own wisdom, go gain your own ah set of of mistakes, but it's worth it. But you have to

Inspiration Behind the Podcast and Course

00:07:24
Speaker
take the time and be intentional. And this is why we started Beauty in the Business in the first place, was because I was working with Renee on a product line.
00:07:31
Speaker
And i met a lot of her estheticians. ah The people that were just finishing beauty school or they came to her and they're taking her lash course, ah which is phenomenal. That's up on the website as well. But people were coming in and they were either fresh out of school or they were a year or two, three years into their into their career. And I love entrepreneurship.
00:07:51
Speaker
I love people that are going out there and doing something for themselves, that they're willing to take a chance on themselves. And that is the beauty business. When you go and you have to make, ah you you make cosmetology school work,
00:08:03
Speaker
Right. You make it through and then you go off on your own. And after talking to some people, I was like, man, so what do they teach you in school? Like they must teach you about how to go build a business because you are, you know, this isn't like a franchise that you're signing up for that comes with a business in a box.
00:08:17
Speaker
You're going to school and then you're graduating and it's like, all right good luck. Right. Go now. You have to go business. Right. business And so, and you know, with when I was in college, I was, that's what I really related it to.
00:08:31
Speaker
When I got out of college, I knew nothing about how to make money. I knew nothing about business. I knew nothing about sales. I knew nothing about that. I got that on the job experience, but there was people out there and said, Hey, we're going to give you the salary, come here and learn, gain the out knowledge, gain the experience. We're going to pay you for that.
00:08:46
Speaker
Of course, if you you can go someplace like that with when you're a beauty professional, but a lot of you will go out and you will be an entrepreneur. You will be responsible for generating your own business.
00:08:57
Speaker
and You can do that. It's just, yeah I didn't see a lot of training around that, right? Like a lot of the beauty schools we talked to, even the really, really good ones. The really good ones that are doing a great job and are very intentional about it love the kids, the people that come through. know you're not all kids that go through there, but love the people that come through. They love the students. They really want to support the students.
00:09:17
Speaker
They're only getting a few hours of marketing training, only a few hours of business training. barely any financial training on how to go out there and actually run a business, business tips. And that's why we put this together because you're taking a chance on yourself. You're going out there and doing something. You're stepping up and say, yeah, I want to do this. And then the failure ratio is 75% after five years.
00:09:36
Speaker
In five years, 75% of you will not be involved in this beauty business. Right now, is that because you don't like beauty anymore? No. Is that because you don't like people anymore? No. Is that because you don't want to help people anymore?
00:09:47
Speaker
Oftentimes, the answer is no. It is because you did not have the proper training to go out there and build and maintain your business. But that is why we launched this course.
00:09:59
Speaker
And so if you can go on there and you take that free course that that we put together, it's going to be worth your time, right? It's absolutely going to be worth your time. And so when you're thinking about what your business is, how are you going to grow your business?

Creating Momentum through Consistent Habits

00:10:15
Speaker
You want to establish your standards. And you want to create momentum around those standards. And so, you know, a standard is something that you do every single day.
00:10:26
Speaker
A standard is not something that you do one day and don't do the next day or you do if you feel like it. You don't do if you don't feel like it. It is a standard of operation that you do every single day.
00:10:38
Speaker
You're tired. You're doing the standard. You're sick. You're doing the standard. You're busy, you're doing the standard. It is something that you can do every single day. Okay, and so a few standards that I would recommend you establish, and again, we talk about these in the course, but your new contacts.
00:10:57
Speaker
If you don't have any clients right now and you're waiting for them to walk through the door, you're not going to have a business in five years. You have to go pursue new clients.
00:11:07
Speaker
You have to go find people that want your service and are willing to pay for your service. And so those would be new contacts. I recommend two a day. If you can go out there and through social media or talking to people where you go to lunch or dinner or drinks or coffee or whatever,
00:11:26
Speaker
You get out there and you have to talk to people and let them know what you do. You don't have to solicit them. You don't have to say, come by, I'd love to book you right now and try to hard close them on the spot. But you have to let people know what you do.
00:11:40
Speaker
Now, if you do this twice a day, and let's say you do it for, you do it just during the week, Monday through Friday. So you're doing it 20 days a month. Twice a day, you're letting two new people know what you do, making contact with them somehow.
00:11:54
Speaker
You're going to have four to five new clients per month. And that's what you can build on. You're not going to have 20 new clients a month. You're not going to have 20 people that say, oh, great. I've been looking for a new esthetician. I've been looking for a new hairstylist.
00:12:08
Speaker
I've been looking for exactly what you're doing. You're not going to have 20 people say that. You're going to have a certain amount of people that say, oh, okay, cool. Yeah, I would love to do that. Or my friend's looking for a new stylist. Or let me get your information in case anything else ever happens. Or you just get a new follower on social media. And then...
00:12:24
Speaker
That's where we take it to social media. So you post one to two times a day. Now this can be making videos. This can be simply reposting beauty tips.
00:12:37
Speaker
This can be reposting results that your past clients have had. This can be anything, but really you want to post one to two times a day. Now, why one to two? ah Because if you're not posting at all, if you're posting once a week right now, but you're not building a business online.
00:12:50
Speaker
You're not marketing online. You're not using social media to the full extent. and so if you're doing once a week, go to once a day. If you're doing once a day, once every other day right now, go to twice a day. figure out a way to stay relevant to your followers, because that leads, that gives a place where your new contacts can go to follow you and see what you can do and see what you can provide.
00:13:09
Speaker
And then the last thing would be follow-ups. So people that said they were interested, but just keep it in touch with people. If you are, again, it let's use the coffee example. If you're out getting coffee and you're line and you ask somebody,
00:13:21
Speaker
you Hey, i really like your hair. If they have cool hair and you're an esthetician, can say, I really like your hair. Where do you get your hair done? Oh, that's good. I'm in the industry. so I'm always looking at beauty, but you have a really cool fashion about you. Give them a compliment. Find something that's beauty related, give them a compliment.
00:13:36
Speaker
That can be fashion. This can be their hair and can be their skin. They can be their attitude, their personality. You know, what do you do that makes you so happy and interesting and fun? Like you have a really good energy about you and stuff like that. You'll get better. yeah there' That's an actual skillset to where you're just going out, giving people compliments and talking to people and just letting them know that you're in that industry. And then out of those people, those are new contacts of those people. You're going to have people that are interested in what you do.
00:14:01
Speaker
Those are the ones you follow up with. If somebody says, oh yeah, I just moved here. I've actually been looking for somebody to do my hair. of actually been, my esthetician just moved away. I've actually been looking for somebody. Then does what you do.
00:14:12
Speaker
Those are follow-ups. Okay. And so you want to do a certain amount of follow-ups every day. So whether that's one, two, three follow-ups. Now these can be in person. They can be a text. They can be a phone call. They can be on social media just to where you're making a follow-up.
00:14:25
Speaker
And again, staying relevant with that person. But these are standards.

Importance of Social Media Activity for Business

00:14:29
Speaker
Okay. These are standards every day, like your follow-ups, maybe two or three a day. Can you do that every day?
00:14:36
Speaker
Absolutely. Will it take intentionality? Absolutely. New contacts, two a day. Okay, five days a week, two a day. Now, can you do it every day? Absolutely.
00:14:46
Speaker
Does it take intentionality? Absolutely. Post on social media. Again, Difficult? Maybe. Does it take intentionality? Absolutely. Will you get results from it? 150,000%. Yes. Every time.
00:14:58
Speaker
yeah every time And so you do these things, you establish your standards, whatever your standards are for you. You do these things every single day, right? And all you do is stay the course.
00:15:11
Speaker
You keep going, you keep doing the things that seem very simple, that seem to make no difference in the act of doing them, but you do them consistently and persistently over a long period of time.
00:15:23
Speaker
And you're going to create momentum, right? You're going to create momentum.
00:15:31
Speaker
And so you're building it, you're building this over a long period of time. So it takes ah it takes some intentionality to actually build. yeah You'll have results faster than you actually think you'll have results. Like when you start it, you think you won't have results for six months.
00:15:47
Speaker
And then you'll have a little bit of results after a month and you'll be shocked by the results you don't have in two months. And then you'll be very happy with the results that you have in six months. They can explode faster than you think. Just remember where you started from.
00:15:59
Speaker
Because then if you stop, what happens is people get started. They stay the course. Life happens. Two, three months in, they stop doing the standards. They stop doing these little consistent things they established as their standard because they got distracted. And instead of recognizing and just getting back on the path because everybody's going to mess up, you're going to mess up, right? You're a human being.
00:16:20
Speaker
You don't stop being a human being just because you establish standards. But you recognize that you messed up and you get back to work. You get back on track, get back on course. That's what it means to stay the course, right? it doesn't mean you're you're not going to get off course.
00:16:34
Speaker
Just mean to get back on course. When people say stay the course, it means just get back on course, get back to your standards that you established and continue to grow and build those. Because when, because that's how you lose momentum.
00:16:47
Speaker
You lose momentum when you recognize that you're off track and you continue down that wrong track. like Or you think you have to get creative because these simple little boring things that you're doing every day, like following up new contacts and posting on social media, aren't happening fast enough for you.
00:17:04
Speaker
right But they are happening. And we have to recognize the power of consistency. We have to recognize the power of momentum. We have to recognize the power of the slight edge. Because that's all it is, you guys.
00:17:15
Speaker
That is you doing something consistently, persistently, with a good attitude every single day, And then having faith that that's going to work. But there's so many examples. It's not a blind faith.
00:17:27
Speaker
It's a faith that we know what happens. If you want to lose weight, if you replace cheeseburgers with salads and go for a walk in 10 minutes in one direction and walk back in the other direction, you're going to, we have faith that we're going to lose weight, right? You do that for 90 days, you will be healthier.
00:17:43
Speaker
with relationships, if you're building a new relationship. if you're If you send that person a message every day for 90 days, you're going to have a new relationship. right? You will have a stronger relationship. But if you only send that person one message a week for 90 days, you won't have a stronger relationship.
00:17:59
Speaker
And with business, if you follow these standards, if you focus on helping people doing the best thing for the person in front of you, you focus on following up new contacts, posting on social media twice a day, you will have a growing and successful business.
00:18:14
Speaker
And again, this is all things that we cover in the course. Beautyinthebusiness.vip is where you can get that. Follow us on the socials. but You can find us at Beautyinthebusiness on TikTok, on Instagram.
00:18:26
Speaker
Follow us on there. You can get a free code in there as well. but Tell your friends, tell anybody you know that's in the beauty industry that you think this would help. But most importantly, remember, stay the course. There's so many examples of life in life.
00:18:40
Speaker
that we know consistency and persistency will prevail. If we do the little things over a long period of time, we will prevail. They might feel uncomfortable when you first start doing them.
00:18:52
Speaker
They might make you question if you're on the right course or not when you are a month or two or three months. But you have to have faith. You are on the right course. Keep doing them.
00:19:02
Speaker
Develop these good habits. And we will see you on the next episode of Beauty in the Business. Thank you all. everybody. If you like what you heard today, join us over at beautyinthebusiness.vip.
