Perseverance and Mindset

00:00:32
Speaker
Hey, everybody, welcome to another episode of Beauty and the Business. My name is Damon Roark, joined by my co-host and business partner, Renee Leon.
00:00:44
Speaker
You know, i saw the other day that you posted something on Instagram, Damon, and it was talking about how quitters never win, essentially. you remember that quote? Yes. Yes.
00:00:55
Speaker
What was it? So if you're judging your opportunity based off the quitters, you're going to be the next one. The fact is that most people quit what they're doing.
00:01:06
Speaker
And we just don't know where they're in that process. Like at at some point, hopefully everybody just sticks with what they have, but most people quit what they're doing. And so anything you're doing at one time, like 80% of people are eventually going to quit. You just don't know where they are.
00:01:21
Speaker
And if your goal is to build a business, if your goal is to kind of stick and stay and grow, you can't judge your opportunity based off people that quit. That's so true. And it's kind of like that old saying, like the tip of the iceberg, right? You don't see everything that's going on underneath the surface, like yeah where they, what they went through, the things that came at them in order to be kind of like in the winner's circle at the end. And a lot of times we talked about comparison before and the pressures of social media and how that can, we can easily fall into that trap of, um, constantly comparing ourselves to others and
00:01:56
Speaker
And that's also why we talk about community and why that's so important to surround yourself with people that want you to win and that you can hold each other accountable.

Impact of Comparison: Personal Growth Focus

00:02:04
Speaker
um What are some of the lessons that you've learned as an entrepreneur in the product sales industry about people and their mindset when it comes to what does it take to you know classify somebody as a winner and what does it take to classify them as a quitter?
00:02:25
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. And i love I love the quote, first of all, comparison is the thief of joy. It's really if you compare yourself, like if we're talking about comparing yourself to um somebody you see on Instagram or somebody else that you think is just further along, it's just you can't compare yourself. You don't know their background. You don't know their network. You don't know the the work that they put in when nobody sees the integrity behind what they do.
00:02:48
Speaker
You don't know what they're putting in. And so you can't judge yourself against them. You can only judge yourself against you, who you were yesterday. then when it comes to quitting, the older

Success in Sales: Mindset and Perseverance

00:02:58
Speaker
I get, the more experienced I get. I've been in sales for 20 years. i've been with I've been with the same company. We started our company 14 years ago, which is crazy to think about. But working with thousands of sales reps over the last 14 years, and it's a 1099, right? it's It's a volunteer army.
00:03:15
Speaker
And so when I think about that and the people that I've worked with, it's you literally just don't quit. Like to win, you just don't quit long enough. And then everybody's like, oh you're a winner. You're a winner. No, it's really not.
00:03:29
Speaker
Like the winners are just people who didn't quit so many times. that eventually they just got what they wanted. And so i would say like the realization of that, the first thing is going to be the realization of the mindset, the successful person mindset is just keep going.

Handling Success and Challenges

00:03:45
Speaker
It's how you respond when things suck. How do you respond when things are great? but you have a full You have a full book of business for the next two months. like You can't fit another appointment in.
00:03:55
Speaker
You're winning. That's awesome. How do you respond? Are you booking for the third month or are you taking a break? Right. Are you recognizing, yeah, you're tired. You're gonna be tired when you're doing that. You're making lot of money, right? It's going to feel great.
00:04:08
Speaker
What's it going to feel like after that? When you hit that third month, is it time to reevaluate? Like when you're winning, is it time to start charging more, right? Open up those books for a higher level of clientele. Are you charging too little, right? Is the $10 that you're making per hour, we need to up that.
00:04:24
Speaker
Yeah. And so it's really reflecting. And then when you're losing, how do you respond? Do you really want this? Right. Do you really want this? And because you're going to people are going experience like massive losses, like it's life.
00:04:38
Speaker
Right. You're going to experience massive downtimes. But how do you respond? You don't have to. I think the misconception when I say this stuff, even in my own head, it's like things are going to suck, right? And you can lay down. You can take a nap. You can watch TV. You can binge eat for a little bit.
00:04:55
Speaker
The next day you get up and you start building your business again or you do the things you know you know you need to do. So I think the first thing is just recognizing the mindset behind it.
00:05:06
Speaker
Being a winner is just amazing. not being a quitter, right? And that's just not being

Dealing with Burnout: Advice for Lash Artists

00:05:11
Speaker
a loser. Right. I think a big one in this industry, we all hear the term burnout. Yeah. That's really common because we are so hands-on. We're touching people. We're talking to people. It's a very high um contact type of industry. Right.
00:05:27
Speaker
That can be draining for a lot of different people that step into this world. And i was just having a conversation with a girl the other day who had been doing lashes for 10 years. And she's like, I just want to be done. i just want to be, want to start over. I want to do something else. I'm like, back hurts. My hands hurt.
00:05:44
Speaker
You know, she's had a really negative mindset about it. And I said, well, what else are you going to do? And she's like, let's think about getting real estate license. I said, well, why would you abandon the profession that you've mastered?
00:05:55
Speaker
Now you can claim yourself as a master lash artist. And have have you ever thought, instead of quitting, how do i redirect my sales? yeah So it's okay to feel the burnout, to feel the day-to-day grind and be tired and want maybe more.
00:06:09
Speaker
when I hear somebody talk about that, like they're just frustrated with the situation that they're in right now, that's an indicator to me that their goals aren't big enough. and so i instead said to her, what if you focus on training?
00:06:24
Speaker
And you can work less, you can hold classes, you can train five students a month and make five times the amount of money that you're making right now. yeah And a lot of times because we're not surrounded by dreamers, we're not surrounded by goal setters, we often, our brain goes to that portion that it's just, you know, let's walk away and quit, throw in the towel, do whatever, because that's what makes us feel safe.
00:06:47
Speaker
Like what you talked to about in the past, previous podcast. Mm-hmm. But instead, it's an indicator that you need to redirect your sales or maybe regroup your goals. Yeah. Yeah, I agree. I think you so much is about vision and belief and knowing where you're going to go as ah as an entrepreneur or business, really as a person.

Vision and Motivation: Preventing Burnout

00:07:05
Speaker
right Let's just say as a person. So much of it is about knowing where you're going to go. And if you if you don't know where you're going and you're just going through the motions, then you're very emotional. But if you know where you're going...
00:07:17
Speaker
then you know how you're going to get there. And you realize the day-to-day grind, the day-to-day suck is is is for a purpose. But you're right, because I think when we start out, and and i've I've experienced this personally in my life, it's like you start out, you have a goal, and at some point you actually achieve the goal.
00:07:34
Speaker
Like I'm sure the master lash artist, right, technician, um if she would have looked back at herself, if she would have told herself 10 years ago, this is where you're going to be.
00:07:45
Speaker
that person 10 years younger would have been ecstatic with the position. And it's just you have to set that goal for either 10 years or five years or two years in the future of where you want to be. Yes, so I think you're absolutely right. Like it it really does go back to reevaluating where you're at, taking time.
00:08:03
Speaker
And just recognizing where you are and setting that new goal. And it's hard to do. you know That burnout comes from, it does stem from that. But then you think about the person going through that. Like a master lash artist

Community and Support Systems

00:08:15
Speaker
is probably just going through the motions.
00:08:17
Speaker
They're seeing a lot of patients. They're taking on a lot of motion of their patients. um They need a break. Right. That's why, as you know, my wife and I, Amber, we take a break every year.
00:08:29
Speaker
at the end of the year to to talk about the next year. Because when life gets going, you know, you have, when you have kids and a spouse and a business and your health and all the stuff.
00:08:42
Speaker
Preach. Right? All the stuff. When you have all the things, like it's easy to go through the motions because you're serving that stuff. You'll do anything for for those priorities, but it's really important to take a step back and be like, where, what am I doing this for?
00:08:54
Speaker
Yeah. And where am I going? Yeah. And again, the importance of community. We've said it yeah before, but, you know, being connected with people like Damon and I, that when you have those moments that we can sit down, have a conversation and help you because it's really hard sometimes to get out of our own heads, to get out of our own way and just hear it from somebody else, you know, it, and help you kind of get over those hurdles because we aren't in the emotions with you.
00:09:21
Speaker
You're in the emotional aspect of it. You're the one feeling tired. I can look at it with fresh lenses. yeah And help you decide where you need to grow your beauty career. And that's why we ah offer, you know, one-on-one coaching. We offer group coaching. We have this podcast. We have all these resources.

Trust and Feedback in Community

00:09:37
Speaker
And something I say is really the key component of beauty in the business is the systems and the importance of systems. And do you want to kind of talk about that a little bit, how that might prevent somebody from quitting when they're focusing Yeah, but I it goes back to what you said with the community, right? I mean, it's community and the systems. And you think about, I'm just reflecting on our relationship, right?
00:10:00
Speaker
Like we talk a lot, we see each other a lot. we We talk about day to day. And then when it's appropriate, we'll talk about goals. We'll talk about the future, right? We'll establish that. But what you're doing in that community is is building trust, right? You're doing life with people, which is what you want.
00:10:16
Speaker
So that, you know, if I'm messing something up, I have trust and faith in you that you want the best for me and you can say something, right? And vice versa. It's, it's, I feel like that if you're messing up or if I think you're messing up, I can bring it to your attention in the moment, right? In the right moment when it's appropriate, not when you're stressed, not when you're crying, not when you're throwing things or excuse me she doesn't do all that. I never cry. Or throw things.
00:10:43
Speaker
But she really doesn't. know I've been saying.
00:10:47
Speaker
but But when you know when somebody's down, that's not when you give the person advice. You just support them. Yeah, that's good. Tell them to walk it off. you're ah God knew what he was doing when made you girl dad. Yeah, for real.
00:11:01
Speaker
But but you you you love that person where they're at. And that's really like when you're doing life with somebody, you're developing that love and that trust. And so you have somebody around you in your community that's not just, hey, you can do

Systems and Goal Setting

00:11:12
Speaker
it, right? Keep going. Right.
00:11:14
Speaker
right they're just They're just not a motivational coffee mug. They're actually there to call you out and be like, hey, well, do you know where you're going? Do you know what your goals are? What are you doing this for? like Is that really motivating to you?
00:11:25
Speaker
And then when you think about the systems that we have and and we start getting to that. I mean, systematically, we're going to review your goals. Yeah. Systematically, reflection. reflection And I call it in the planners, reflection and reformation. yeah Because you have to you may have goals and you may not hit them in the time frame that you had.
00:11:45
Speaker
But you'll never hit them if you quit. But you might have to be more realistic about your time frame and like what you're able to do. My brain, I'm always thinking I can do the absolute most. yeah But my kids are my number one.
00:11:57
Speaker
And so we were just talking today. I was like, oh, I'm tired. You know, didn't get two nights of sleep because my son has some issues with his stomach. Life happens. like But resetting yourself and knowing what your goals are and being able to realal reallocate the time that you might need to to give yourself the grace to hit those goals is way better than just throwing the towel in.
00:12:20
Speaker
For sure. And then you yeah you systematically look at your priorities and you have to recognize your priorities when you're going through the planner. Like you have to admit that you can't be a 10 out of 10.
00:12:31
Speaker
You can't be a 10 out of 10. We just have to define what 10 out of 10 is. Yeah. Right. You can be a 10 out of 10 mom, but what's that look like? Yeah. Right. You can be a 10 out of 10 business owner as long as we know what the 10 looks like.
00:12:45
Speaker
But I think a lot of us especially with that, when we get back full circle to the joy of the comparison, right? um Is the thief of joy. When you're comparing yourself to this made up 10, I call it like made up 10 out of 10.
00:13:02
Speaker
that you just think you need to be perfect in every single thing that you do because you have the capability to do it in that silo. We're not going to look at your life in a silo. We're looking at your life holistically. but What are your all of your priorities? And then we're going to allocate time and energy towards those resources.
00:13:18
Speaker
And then we take that. And we come up with your annual goals and then we take it all the way back down to monthly goals, weekly goals. And what are the daily actions that you can do to go significantly change your life? And I think it just connects the whole thing.
00:13:32
Speaker
You know, if if you're just living day to day, it gets very frustrating. But when you know your what you're working now is going to echo for the next year, five years, 10 years and build your business, that's where the systems really come in.
00:13:44
Speaker
Yeah, I agree. And that's the importance. It's like the easiest thing to do, but the hardest, the hardest thing. yeah Easy to do, easy not to do Easiest thing to do, easiest thing not to
