Addressing Burnout in Beauty Professionals

00:00:31
Speaker
So you're in the peak of your beauty career. You've got regular clientele, you feel like your books are stacked, but then the inevitable happens where you feel the burnout coming.
00:00:43
Speaker
It starts to feel a little overwhelming that in order to make money, you are gonna have to physically be behind the chair.

Creating Multiple Income Streams

00:00:51
Speaker
In today's episode, we're gonna talk about how to combat that, how to get ahead of it, even while you're still in school.
00:00:59
Speaker
By always having that thought process of wanting to truly embrace your entrepreneurial spirit and make money that does not require you being behind the chair, you're going to want to listen to what Damon's about to speak to us today.
00:01:14
Speaker
What are your tips here, Damon? There's so many beauty pros that are so good at their craft, right? Or they love their craft. They go to school for their craft. They become a master at their craft.
00:01:25
Speaker
But I think what we're really talking about is at the end of the day, you're still trading time for money. Correct. And everybody wants to at least have a light at the end of the tunnel, right? To have options of not trading time for money directly all the time, right? Having

Diversifying Income for Stability

00:01:43
Speaker
those multiple streams of income, which yeah we've talked about in episodes previously of people that do a lot. but though I think the example that we used last time was, you know, they'll be doing lashes and then they'll also move to dog sitting.
00:01:55
Speaker
That's a temporary fix, right? That's still trading time for money, but the spirit of where it comes from, the need that you're trying to fu fulfill that you're talking about, Renee, is that um you have no hope for the future that you're going to be making money outside of the chair.
00:02:11
Speaker
It's a common problem as women get older in this industry. They start to figure out that, oh my gosh, I'm going to be working way past normal retirement because the money stops when I step away from the chair. Yeah. Those 22-year-old shoulders, those 22-year-old knees, the 22-year-old back is not the same feeling at 42.
00:02:31
Speaker
No, it's not. I think that's what happens. And then you start putting it together. You're like, well, 42 turns into 62, right? That same amount of time, 22 to 42, 42 to 62, that's like, then you start feeling it.
00:02:44
Speaker
And when your body feels like 62 at 42, because you're making money on your feet, because you're making money yeah using those fine motor skills in your hands and your elbows and your shoulders and your upper back and your lower back and your everything.
00:02:58
Speaker
Do you remember like a year or two ago when I sent you a voice memo? I was literally, I remember laying on my back in my bedroom with my little neck contraption because I had slipped my disc again for the third time. happens like It would happen like every Christmas season when I'm just back to back to back with clients, I'd slip a disc.
00:03:17
Speaker
Yeah. And I was like, this is dumb. Why did I stop selling product in my salon? I didn't stop. I just really didn't focus yeah on it. And so i reached back to him like, I got to get this the firm cream. It's springtime. We got to get firm back on the shelves because I cannot be laying here spending money at the doctor. Yeah.
00:03:37
Speaker
Just completely unable to even show up to my job. And that's when reality hit that I've got to find other ways to bring an income. And it's possible. Yeah, it's absolutely possible. It's 100% possible.

Benefits of Product Sales with Services

00:03:49
Speaker
But to your point, you have to be intentional with it.
00:03:51
Speaker
Yeah. You can't just throw a product up on the shelf and say that's going to sell itself. Right. People are going to find out what that product does. It's going to refer itself. It takes very minimal effort and focus to to sell product, to refer product, especially when you're a beauty professional. You have people that are coming to you for beauty.
00:04:09
Speaker
Right. When I go get my when I go get my car worked on, um if I'm getting new tires and they recommend new brakes, I'm going to listen to them. Right. Doesn't mean I'm going to do it, but I'm going to listen to him. And probably at some point I am going to come back and get those breaks checked because I'm there. It's selling within the same vertical or providing not even selling.
00:04:28
Speaker
It's providing solutions in the same vertical. If you're doing lashes and walking dogs, it's not the same vertical. yeah Right. But providing solutions in the same vertical. That's really what we're talking about.
00:04:40
Speaker
is your you're not trading direct time for direct money anymore. Because if I'm in your chair and you're doing my lashes and you recommend a lash product and you recommend a skincare product and I buy those things, all of a sudden, that direct money that we're trading for lashes for money, right? And in your time and your effort and your expertise is now quadrupled because now I'm also buying skincare.
00:05:07
Speaker
Like now I'm also buying some kind of product from Lash serum. Yeah. however yeah but it But it's the idea of like, you want to expand your offering, expand your vertical so that your time in the chair is worth more.
00:05:17
Speaker
So it's not necessarily cutting down a lot of time from the chair. but it's at least making it more effective. So if you do get hurt, if you do go on vacation, you know, have something to where, that's why I love product sales.
00:05:29
Speaker
When I go on vacation, my customers are still buying product. Yeah. but If I'm hurt, customers are still buying product. If I spend, when we owned a ah medical spa ah years ago, I mean, 15, 20 years ago, um Groupon was huge. I know Groupon's still a thing, but this is when like Groupon broke out was huge.
00:05:49
Speaker
And we would have people driving an hour to get Botox. Well, when they're there, they're getting Botox. and you know where they're going when they need Botox again? They're not doing what we want to do with us discounting our price for Groupon and then coming back. to the next Groupon. They're going to the next Groupon.
00:06:06
Speaker
It's wild. But if I get them on a product, at least some of my marketing efforts, some of my shelf space, some of my rent, all the investments that I make in my business to make it a great experience, I get them on product.
00:06:17
Speaker
They're still a customer of mine. Now, they're not the Botox customer that I wanted, but they're now a product customer. So something I'm getting something out of it. But that's what it means when when we talk about stop trading your time for money or or not stop trading your time for money. When we talk about just expanding your services, how do you make more money? How do you make your time more valuable when you're in a profession where it is very much trading time for money?
00:06:43
Speaker
Yeah. but That's what this actually means. So if you're brand new, if you're in school right now, if you're a a brand new beauty professional, even if you're a beauty professional in this frustration point or this breaking point or this burnout point that Renee's talking about, this is very, very common.
00:06:59
Speaker
I've talked to so many beauty professionals that are just like, you know, my hands hurt, my back hurts. I don't know how much longer I'm going to keep doing this. or or want to keep doing this. But then what do you do? Like when you've been doing something for five, when you love something that you you've been doing it for five years, 10 years, 15 years, like it's hard to see yourself transitioning.
00:07:17
Speaker
The good news is you don't have to give up all that experience, all the clientele, all the work that you've put in your career. All you have to do is expand your offerings. that

Business Goals and Mentorship for Growth

00:07:28
Speaker
Yeah, and a couple of tips, if I may, if you're in that point in your career, that's the time when you need to bring in apprentices.
00:07:36
Speaker
That's the time when you maybe need to look at not just renting a chair, but having your own space. A lot of times we put ourselves in this little tiny box because school is going to tell you that you have to work commission, you have to do this in order to really make money or to be stable.
00:07:52
Speaker
And they're lying to you. That's the safe bet, but it comes with a cap. And if that's all, that's okay. If that's what your goal is, just to show up, make money couple days a week, five days a week, go home and know exactly what to expect, then this podcast isn't for you.
00:08:09
Speaker
But if you are somebody who wants to dream bigger, remember my first training course that I took outside of last school. I loved my trainer so much.
00:08:21
Speaker
And I thought I could do that someday. I could see myself doing that someday. And so now that's what I do. But I wasn't going to leave her class, and this does happen in the industry, and then be a trainer only having touched two faces yeah on brows.
00:08:39
Speaker
You know, you got to earn your skin in the game. But if I didn't have that plan in place, if I didn't have that clear goal in mind of that is what I want to develop into, and I'm going to restructure my business and make that what i my dream job is,
00:08:54
Speaker
And I'm going to do that over the course of the next five years. And guess what? I did it. Why? Because I had the target point. Because every decision I made in my business and every decision I made day in and day out That was my end goal. No matter what, no matter the drama in the salon, no matter who comes and who goes, no matter if I lost a client, I knew, okay, that's great. Doesn't align with my goals.
00:09:16
Speaker
Move it on. Yeah. Move it along, sister. And that's why identifying those things, if you want to make money someday that, you know, when you step away from behind the chair, we have our one-on-one coaching sessions, which we can, the two of us together can really help you come up with a, with a plan. Mm-hmm.
00:09:34
Speaker
on how to do that and how to set those small goals that turn into big picture. Yeah. And when we talk about goals you know in the course, which right now you can actually get our masterclass course on on how to brand your business, how to set goals, basically everything you need to get your business up and running that you're not going to learn in beauty school.
00:09:55
Speaker
Right now we have that course for free at www.beautyinthebusiness.vip. But in that goal setting section, what you're talking about, now I just love this example so much of the road trip. Right. Like, where are you going when you have like with you, you knew where you want to end up.
00:10:11
Speaker
It's the exact same with a road trip.
00:10:16
Speaker
It's going to be you have to know where you're going, how you're going to get there. And then every decision you make puts you on that path.
00:10:23
Speaker
And so when we're talking about this when we're talking about this roadmap, ah sorry, road trip, and we have this end goal in mind, um you know what is what does this actually look like? When we relate it to trading your time for money or expanding your business or making more money, we're talking about growth.
00:10:42
Speaker
Like we're really talking about growth. And I know, you know, your story is very similar. I never planned on being a ah beauty professional consultant and helping beauty pros with their business.
00:10:53
Speaker
But I started off in IT sales, right? Or IT staffing, not even IT sales. um with IT so i t staffing, which means I would call computer programmers so and say, hey, do you want this job? And then would go back to the company and be like, yeah, they want this job. Here's what you're going to pay them. And here's what you're going to pay me for finding this person.
00:11:09
Speaker
And then I got into medical sales and then I got into part time while I still do medical sales, part time product sales, anti agent product sales and then full time anti agent product sales and then training and selling.
00:11:24
Speaker
And then we started working together. Yeah. And then I got exposed to all of these beauty professionals that are getting out of school, that are making this giant sacrifice to follow their dreams.
00:11:35
Speaker
And it's really, for me, it's really inspirational to watch somebody go to school, want to do it, have so much excitement and so much, um just so much passion for what they're doing.

Career Journeys and Mentorship

00:11:45
Speaker
But then recognizing They don't have any idea about building a business.
00:11:50
Speaker
That's not true. I don't mean to disparage. Most people don't. Yeah. Even when you're in it, even when I started out, like I recorded the steps. I recorded what it took. Cause I had that goal in mind that I wanted to train someday.
00:12:05
Speaker
But there's not really a clear roadmap that they give you in school. Right. Right. And how to do that. So know that when he says that, he means it's OK to feel that way because you're not alone. Yeah.
00:12:18
Speaker
Yeah. Sorry. He's not calling you stupid. Right. I would say, that yeah, there's that giant ah there's that giant gap. And then you even, I mean, you have business experience. and You had built your own business for your own side hustles before.
00:12:30
Speaker
You'd worked for other people. I mean, working in the restaurant industry is very entrepreneurial in itself. Like you have to be a self-starter, self-manager. um But then to take that experience and then take it into beauty.
00:12:42
Speaker
And then, you know, we're talking to people that are 18, 19, 20 years old. that are going to school. And I know it's not everybody in beauty school, but you know, a lot of people to me, and as I'm also 42. So it's like, feel like that old man, it's like anybody under the age of 35 as a kid.
00:12:58
Speaker
um But I'm talking to people that have their dreams and, and they want to make it happen, but they're getting no training. Yeah. And the whole point is, you know, i never thought I would end up here. Just like, I don't know if you know, when you're in when you're in a restaurant management, like, you don't think you're going end up here. You couldn't have paid me. Right.
00:13:16
Speaker
I wouldn't have believed you. I wouldn't have believed you if you told me. It'd be a lash artist and then have my own salon and then help other women do this. Like God's plan is so intricate and it's so precise and where he wants you to be. And sometimes it's just about, you know, got to follow, you just got to follow where the signs are taking you, where, you know,
00:13:40
Speaker
kind of always be aware sometimes the answer is already in front of us like what our hurdle is whatever it is we need to get over it's right there in front of us we just got to go do the work to get over it but that's what I love about this industry there's so many different avenues Yeah, there are. And that's why, you know, one of our core principles that we talk about in the course is showing up consistently with a good attitude over a long period of time.
00:14:04
Speaker
Because if you stop showing up, then you don't get to expand on your opportunities. Like you don't get to expand your experience. If you stop showing up with a good attitude, well, you're negative. Nobody wants to work with a negative person, right? You're closed off from the opportunities.
00:14:20
Speaker
um Show up with a good attitude over a long period of time. You can't show up for two weeks with a good attitude and walk around. and i got a good attitude. like but Let's go. like Where's the success? It has to be over a long period of time. You have to let the compound effect of your experience and your personality and your skill set grow and compound on itself.
00:14:37
Speaker
And then show up over a long period of time consistently with the good attitude or consistently. You have to do it consistently. If you're not consistent, everything falls down. everything falls down It goes in one of that, talked about it before, I know, maybe you just you and on individual level, but the things that don't take talent to build your business. Like there's certain qualities that a person has that makes you part of the top 1%. Right.
00:15:02
Speaker
and And showing up is one of them. Pushing forward through is one of them. Being on time is one of them. You know, saying the course is one of them. It's just like those little things that you can do um but anybody can do.
00:15:19
Speaker
Yeah. But do you have somebody holding you accountable to do those things? So a lot of times we have the skills, we have the rope, we just don't have the accountability. Right. that's where we step in. Yeah, the guidance, we have the skills. Maybe we don't know what that next step is. Yeah.
00:15:33
Speaker
Right. And that that's where that accountability comes in is I love having somebody be like, hey, let's take a deep breath. Let's back up. Like, what do we have to get done right now? and feel like this is a trick because that's what you say to me. and What if I started talking and it's like, oh, yeah, you just like we literally just had yeah this literally just happened five minutes ago.
00:15:54
Speaker
Um, five minutes for this podcast, but it's important, you know, it is important, but that's what mentorship is. That's where guidance, that's where having a workout partner, having a business partner really is so useful is that I can like with my salespeople, I can tell them exactly what to say.
00:16:10
Speaker
yeah And in the exact situation, put me in that exact situation. five out of 10 times, I'm saying the wrong thing. Right. i'm walking away being like, I shouldn't have said that.
00:16:23
Speaker
Or I'm talking to you or another mentor or business partner. And they're like, well, maybe this is what I would have said. And like, well, that's a lot better than what I said. But that's where it comes in. You reflect. So next time i'm in that situation, I'll be that much better and I'll go make a totally new mistake.
00:16:38
Speaker
yeah But if you're not trying and putting yourself out there and and trying to move the move forward somewhat, You can't make those mistakes, learn from them and then grow because you quit.
00:16:49
Speaker
Right. And so I think, you know, there's a lot of different examples. So we've gone through of going from like the chair to the CEO, going from being a beauty pro who's very, very good at their skillset, but then expanding that business. What does that actually mean?
00:17:06
Speaker
What does it look like? Right. What does it look like? It it looks like growth. What are some examples? Right. So we try to talk to a lot of different people on this podcast, a lot of different people in a lot of different situations, whether you're still in school or you've been a beauty pro for 20 years, right? Hopefully we can give you some amount of inspiration or ideas that you can move forward with.
00:17:26
Speaker
What would ah like what's some what's something that people could do? Like some

Expanding Services and Product Sales

00:17:32
Speaker
examples that you have, Renee, of what people could do to kind of expand their product offering so or their service offering.
00:17:39
Speaker
Layering services would be my first thing. So what's your what's in your skill set? What's on your books? Can you layer services together? What I mean by that is making it very clear to the person that's already in your chair.
00:17:50
Speaker
Maybe you're doing lashes and you have the ability to do brow waxing. Offer that. It's another same amount of time. You're adding on more money. When they leave, you can recommend them a new lash shampoo that you like to help with their retention. Or you can add on lash serum that will help with their retention and the health of their lashes and their lash line.
00:18:12
Speaker
So that's what I would call like you're already layering the services. You already have that person in the chair. Now expanding your skill set, that's the next way that you're going to make money. so maybe you are a bad a hair stylist you're known for platinum blondes you've got that down to a niche and you've shied away from extensions but extensions is what's making big money in hair right now and oftentimes i see clients leave their current stylist that they love because that stylist was unwilling to learn that skill set and they come over to maddie
00:18:46
Speaker
who was not afraid to learn that skill set. And that's what the client wants. So making sure you're taking inventory of your client's desirable outcome. And so with la with hair extensions, you know, she that's how she grew to six figures. Mm-hmm.
00:19:01
Speaker
and by incorporating that and not being too scared where everybody else told her she was too new, she was too fresh, she was too this, yeah you mean you can't do that, this person. If you listen to all the negative, because I don't care what the service is, what the product is, there's going to be a negative Nancy out there that's going piss in your Cheerios.
00:19:20
Speaker
But now look at her. she She put her blinders on. She got connected with us. She's making six figures behind the chair and it's a lot less taxing on her body. So less she's lessened the amount of hours per client that she needs to work, but she's capitalizing more yeah on each client.
00:19:38
Speaker
so that's one example. And then I give example of working towards a long-term goal. um ah You know, maybe someday you want to teach women how to do what you do.
00:19:50
Speaker
You want to teach the world a new technique that you've developed. You can monetize on that. Do you know how to do that? We can help you. And then obviously product sales. That's part of layering services.
00:20:03
Speaker
The full client experience, which we go over in the course, But the importance of product sales, because if they're not buying it from you, they're buying it from Walgreens or Ulta, Sephora. Even worse, Amazon, ah you you have to fill the gap. And then it also brings in more income for your business. Yeah.
00:20:22
Speaker
And even as we're just talking about this now, you know with Maddie getting into extensions, with a lot of other people that we've worked with, we see them really capitalize on what we're talking about as trends. Yeah. Right? being When you have a lot of people, yeah, get ahead of it. like That's what happens when you're in the when a group of ah when you're in a group of people, when you have mentorship, when you're around other professionals.
00:20:43
Speaker
You have the advantage to know what's going to be trending. Right. And that's the point is that like there's a lot of hairstylists now that are just now starting to learn how to do extensions.
00:20:56
Speaker
Mm hmm. But there's a lot of people that got started, not a lot, there's a fewer amount of people that got started right when it started coming out that are now experts at extensions. Yeah. Right. And so you want to be an expert in what is trending.
00:21:08
Speaker
Like with product sales, I know our companies had eight different products that were trending years before they actually started. I'm sorry, we launched them years before they started trending.
00:21:19
Speaker
Yeah. When they start trending is when you start making the big money on it. But if you're promoting it beforehand, if you're talking to your clients about it beforehand, if you're talking to your end users about it beforehand, then they know you're ahead of the game and you can get very good at what's trending.
00:21:34
Speaker
Yeah, it's important. yeah And like you said, connecting to a community that you're able to have those discussions. You're able to connect with the other beauty entrepreneurs who have the same growth set mindset that you do.
00:21:48
Speaker
That's where the ideas start to build. That's where the ideas start to happen. Not when you step into your commission-based salon and everybody's in competition and you're told all the negatives all day long. You want to you can go there and make your money, honey.
00:22:01
Speaker
But then step into a growth based environment to where you can pivot the direction of your career or you can bounce ideas off somebody who's been there. And that's how you grow. up Yeah.
00:22:12
Speaker
And so, again, this podcast will hit a lot of different people in a lot of different positions. ah But

Setting Personal Business Goals

00:22:20
Speaker
let's get down with an action item. What's your next step?
00:22:24
Speaker
You know where you're at. At some point during this podcast, you had an idea, right? That's going to be your next goal. That might not be your next step. What's the first step you can take in achieving that goal?
00:22:36
Speaker
Right. Where do you want to be? ah How are you going to get there? And that's usually when I've been to a lot of, I've been a lot of different conferences. I listen a lot of different podcasts. I've taken a lot of personal development and read a lot of books.
00:22:47
Speaker
Generally what strikes, like what will strike me is I'll take a note on something. And then what my next step is, whatever I think it is, like that's where you have to trust your expertise. you have to trust your experience and identify what your next step is. So now,
00:23:02
Speaker
That's what your action item is. What's your next goal? And then what's the first step that's going to help you get there? if you're

Building a Social Media Presence

00:23:09
Speaker
fret If you're still in school, I can tell you, if you don't have a social media following or social or any kind of representation on social media, you need to take our course and follow exactly the way Renee trains how to build up your social media.
00:23:22
Speaker
So again, that's beautyinthebusiness.vip. You can get the course for free right now. ah We usually charge 500 bucks for this course, but it's for free right now. And so you can get this course, follow that. Because again, we've talked to a lot of recent grads and people that are still in school recently.
00:23:37
Speaker
um I have not seen anybody that has a social media presence. Nobody. So that's something you can do. If you're a professional of 10 years and you don't have a social media presence, that's another, you can do it as well. Like I just, I think social media is so important no matter what you're going to launch.

Like Renee, can you think of one thing that anyone from a current student to a 20-year professional would launch right now as a vertical income option, expanding their services, can you think of one thing they would launch that would not be served better by social media?

Speaker
No. Maybe it's marketing. It's marketing. It's the new Google. It's the new, it's just, you got to get with the times. You can't fight it, you know? It's just like we talked about ai and times are changing. It's just, it's how people find the person they want to work with. And there is a percentage and I'm going to mess it up. I promise you that. But I think it's around 80%.

People are 8% more likely to book with you if they know the person they're booking with, like visually, or if you're showing up in your stories or you have a couple of photos, maybe a pin post to the top, it makes them like, if you just have pictures pictures of your hair on there, or you're like that, you know, your client's hair,

And it may be beautiful. They still want to know who they're booking with. Yeah. So it's just another way to open up the, that portion of it. Yeah. So, and yeah, you have to utilize social media. and yeah Yeah. I just, you're going to be served by that somewhat or not somewhat. You're going to be served that by that and in, in just a tremendous way when you build out your social media.
