What is Adaptogen-Infused Coffee? A conversation with Jordan Ryan O’Hara, founder of Windansea Coffee.

Jordan Ryan O’Hara is a military veteran, who retired following injury.

After a lengthy period of medical treatments Jordan decided that he needed to investigate alternative medicines and therapies if he was going to achieve the level of recovery that he craved.

Jordan embarked on a journey that involved researching and experiencing a huge range of options from yoga to surf therapy. Finally, he discovered functional mushrooms and learning how the adaptogens they contain can be infused into coffee.

In this episode, of the Abeceder podcast Fit For My Age Jordan and host Michael Millward explore Jordan’s life pre and post his discovery of alternative therapies and the positive impact adaptogens have had on his life.

Today, my guest, who I met on Matchmaker.fm, is Jordan O'Hara.
00:01:26

Jordan's Background and Military Aspirations

00:02:20
Speaker
My Age.
00:02:20
Speaker
So let's get started. Hello, Jordan. Hey, Michael. How are you doing today? I'm doing super well. Thank you very much for having me on your show. I'm really looking forward to talking about functional mushrooms, holistic health and wellness, and kind of my journey through entrepreneurship.
00:02:37
Speaker
So thank you. It's going to be great. You know, functional mushrooms is like people are going, what is what does that mean? What does that mean? But before we get onto that, please, can you give us a little bit of a potted history of Jordan and and how you came to start on this health journey?
00:02:55
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. So, um yeah, as as you mentioned, I live in the United States. Originally, i was born and raised in New Mexico, which is kind of like a desert state in the Southwest.
00:03:10
Speaker
maybe People might be familiar with Breaking Bad, that show with about about making meth. And, um yeah, it actually captures my hometown pretty well.
00:03:21
Speaker
Ironically. But yeah, so I grew up there and then I moved to the state of Oregon on the West Coast and I went to undergraduate a university there.
00:03:33
Speaker
I studied finance and at some point I realized i didn't quite... want to grow up just yet. And so I started looking at the military as a potential um option for a career path to keep me out of sitting at behind a desk.
00:03:54
Speaker
And so I looked at specifically the Navy SEAL program. i was interested in doing something within special operations, ah you know jump out of planes, shoot guns, blow stuff up, and that seems adequate enough to not be behind a desk.
00:04:14
Speaker
I'm just getting this impression that you started on your degree with the intention of being an accountant and all of a sudden you're jumping out of planes in all sorts of camouflage and and whatever. and it they i thought Yeah, that was actually kind of how it went. I was like, oh boy, going to career fairs and like kind of looking them like, oh no. like I liked studying finance because I enjoyed math and sort of like applied economics, but...
00:04:40
Speaker
Yeah, i mean, you're looking at, as a 21-year-old, what sort of jobs are they give you? and you're like, oh dude, this is not actually what I... thought like I'm not ready to grow up just yet. And so yeah, yeah, the military. And then that's kind of what brought me out to San Diego, California. It's one of the largest naval ports in the world, but certainly in the United States.
00:05:06
Speaker
And um so yeah, I did my time out here deployed. And yeah, I mean, I can tell you a little bit more about my background, but I'm i'm sure we're going to get into it. So I'll let you hop in with any questions from

Health Challenges and Seeking Alternatives

00:05:18
Speaker
there.
00:05:18
Speaker
so Okay. Now I've read your profile and you give me lots of information. So I know that your military career ended when you were injured and that led to all sorts of health complications for you.
00:05:30
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, definitely. And that's what really started you on, on the health journey being faced, I suppose, like many people are, whether it's military and injury or some sort of chronic illness being faced with like, I've been given this by the health professionals, but I need more or I need something different. And you are in many ways on your own, I suppose, and in that search.
00:05:55
Speaker
100%. Yeah, that was, you know, yeah. So yeah, I'm happy to kind of hop into that. So while in training, I had a pretty bad back injury. And due to the nature of my job, you know, having to ah carry a lot of weight and, you know, it was just a very physically demanding job.
00:06:18
Speaker
It kind of sidelined my career. And, um you know, I went down a very... traditional Western medical path of rehabilitation. And while I experienced, you know, some improvement, I guess, relative to like my absolute worst, you know, it it was a lot of, uh, medications, injections, uh, topicals, patches, surgeries, um,
00:06:48
Speaker
stuff like that and it gave me some improvement but it felt like it came with its own you know set of side effects and you're you're like like okay you you kind of pull on this lever and it it improves this a little bit but it made something else worse and now you got to go over to that lever and figure out what to pull to do that before you know it you're playing you know like internal chemistry just trying to get back to some state of normalcy and um yeah, you're just it just felt like a lot of the tools that were given were not super tailored to you specifically. It was sort of like a one-size-fits-all
00:07:32
Speaker
solution and you know there's always another pill we can give you for the side effects of the last pill that we gave you you know and and it occurred to me at some point i'm like this might be some version of what my life looks like you know like this might not just be a hey I sit for a few days and and you know stretch and and you'll be back out there in a couple weeks which you know had been most of That was sort of my mentality up to this point. It was that like, you know, you just got to fight through it and do your best. And then, you know, hopefully you heal in time and and you kind of going.
00:08:09
Speaker
and And so when it became clear to me that that was not really the way this was, you know, shaping up, my mindset had to switch to how am I going to manage this sustainably in the long run that doesn't involve me just chasing handfuls of pills down and you know being out of commission in rehab from surgeries and injections and and all these things so I just felt like there needs there needs to be an alternative um and then that's what really kind of began my my journey
00:08:46
Speaker
It sounds almost as if you were like a pair of maracas or something, so many pills inside you that if you shook, you'd rather... Yeah, it's super true, super true. I mean, the you my the mail would come and, yeah, they'd send me all all these pills.
00:09:00
Speaker
And I'm in my late 20s, you know, and and you're you're over at the VA a hospital and you're seeing these salty Vietnam vets and, um you know, just these these guys that are like relics from from wars long forgotten.
00:09:16
Speaker
And they're standing in line at the pharmacy. They're shaking their cane, you know yelling at the pharmacist because they're switching their pills or they're not giving them as many pills. And you're like, you know that that caricature of what a veteran's hospital you know looks like like, I saw it.
00:09:34
Speaker
I saw it and I saw my place in that system. And it scared the crap out of me. like I do not want to be that guy. It's not where you want to be. No, no.
00:09:46
Speaker
I think there is a growing trend nowadays for people to say, yeah, one option is to go down the pills, the injections, the conventional treatment. And you do end up with there is this tablet that that's going to deal with the symptom, but that creates a side effect, which needs another tablet.
00:10:03
Speaker
And then you've got tablets to deal with, not with making you better or managing your illness, but dealing with the side effects of another tablet that you're taking. yeah And it can lead to a lot of frustration and like this search for something that is going to be better.
00:10:19
Speaker
for you and enable you to manage your condition without having to take in artificial things. And I think that's then when you started exploring all the various different alternatives that might be available.
00:10:33
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, that's right. Yeah. So, um you know, kind of going down, looking for what sort of plant-based or natural supplements could I take that would help me deal with some of the inflammation, my pain, the anxiety, help me sleep better, um you know, just just kind of the basic stuff. Because it's not just, you know, what what sometimes people kind of don't realize about like a physical injury is there's a whole host of physical symptoms associated with that but it also impacts your mental health and you know your sense of identity you know you feel it in right square in your ego
00:11:12
Speaker
You know, oh man, am i going to ever be as good as I

Surf Therapy and Discovering Functional Mushrooms

00:11:16
Speaker
once was? Or what are people at my work going to think of me? You know, what is this doing to my reputation? and And then the anxiety that that builds. I'm losing my job.
00:11:25
Speaker
I'm losing my identity. I'm losing my income. I'm losing all of that stuff. So you start piling all that on top of it. And you're like, whoa, this is, it's fantastic. far beyond just like, hey, my back hurts or whatever the case is.
00:11:38
Speaker
And so that was sort of how the search began is like, what sort of plants, you know, or or natural supplements could I take? And then in kind of going down that road, i you know, really discovered um like yoga, sound healing, sound baths, ice baths, all of this stuff beyond just,
00:12:01
Speaker
ah magic pill or some sort of, you know, cure all supplements, which, you know, maybe that's how ah my search began is like, what is the thing that's going to take? But at the end of the day, you realize it's, there isn't just a one, one silver bullet that's going to make you better.
00:12:18
Speaker
And that's kind of the whole concept behind holistic health is it's figuring out, it's approaching your health from a as like a whole picture, you know, so looking at all aspects of it and then tailoring it specifically for you and your lifestyle and what's sustainable for you, um you know, and so that's, it's a very like personal journey and that extends beyond just any one thing, you know?
00:12:47
Speaker
Yeah. You mentioned that you started yoga, but there's another thing that you started as well, which is ah sounds very interesting. It's called surf therapy.
00:12:57
Speaker
Yes, absolutely. I can't believe almost forgot to talk about surf therapy. I would never let you not forget about it because it's yeah it's one of those things that um if you can stand up upon ah on a surfboard, as I can, um it is impossible not to look cool if you are on a surfboard.
00:13:17
Speaker
Super true. Yeah, I mean, surf surfing, so backing up a little bit, um I got involved with a surf therapy nonprofit as I was recovering that took...
00:13:32
Speaker
Wounded warriors taught them how to surf, you know, help them with different custom like equipment and wetsuits and stuff like that. And um yeah, it was it was hugely empowering in a number of ways. You know, first and foremost, you are outside, you're moving your body, you're connecting with nature, all things that, you know, we are are demonstrably shown to improve your health and well-being, right?
00:13:58
Speaker
Yes. But on top of that, it's connecting me into ah community and a a surf culture. You know, there's there's a lifestyle component. There's, you know, a lingo. There's language. you You start learning, you know, about board shapes and surf spots, you know. And and it's it's empowering because, you know, coming from a naval special operations background, you we always approached the ocean and the water, where whereas most military units see the the water as a hazard.
00:14:32
Speaker
you know For naval amphibious special operations, the ocean's like our our home. It's where you know we feel safe and comfortable because that's where we train and we know that it's hard and we know that most people can't handle it. And that's why it becomes sort of like a, a, a refuge, but coming off of this injury and, and, you know, like everything I mentioned about it, kind of, you know, pulling the rug out from your identity and your ego and all that stuff, you know, you're,
00:15:01
Speaker
Getting back into the ocean for me and being able to feel strong again and feel good and capable at something that most people you know find to be difficult or scary, it really helped connect me back with my military service and just sort of my identity as somebody who is you know physically capable. So that was a huge impact for me as well.
00:15:25
Speaker
Yes. And there is one extra benefit as well of surfing. When they put you in a wetsuit, there is nothing that motivates a man to lose weight more than being put in a wetsuit.
00:15:40
Speaker
If you are carrying a few extra pounds and you're wearing a wetsuit, that is like you've got to lose those extra pounds if you're going to wear a wetsuit. Yeah. Yeah, they're not very forgiving. It'll it'll definitely... ah Definitely. Definitely. Yeah, super true. All of this journey then got you around to this point where you discovered the functional mushrooms and then that led to the development of ah a range of coffee.
00:16:05
Speaker
And I think we need to start this journey just by sort of saying, what is the coffee called and where can people get it? Absolutely, yeah. So um I like created a company called Wind & Sea Coffee, um spelled like the beach in La Jolla. So Wind, A-N-S-E-A, Wind & Sea Coffee.
00:16:26
Speaker
um It's a very iconic surf beach down here in La Jolla, California. And um yeah, we specialize in making ah adaptogen and functional mushroom infused coffee and coffee products.
00:16:40
Speaker
So backing up a little bit, functional mushrooms were hugely impactful ah in my recovery. um I started learning about this category of substances called adaptogens.
00:16:56
Speaker
which help your body adapt to external stressors and help bring you back into balance or homeostasis, which is sort of the that state of well-being. It's where your body wants to be.
00:17:09
Speaker
It's where you don't feel sort of like out of balance. Everything is just sort of humming along, moving the way it's supposed to. So I started really learning about how functional mushrooms have this ability.
00:17:21
Speaker
And there's a lot of different functional mushrooms, but and they all kind of do slightly different things. But when you use them together, you basically get like a head to toe rehabilitation through cognitive support, decreasing stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, um reducing inflammation, helping you sleep better, helping you get better oxygen saturation in your blood, which gives you energy.
00:17:51
Speaker
So there's all sorts of these these little benefits that they have. And they enact on your body in ways that just allows you to kind of be the best version of yourself and to do so without pharmaceuticals.

Incorporating Mushrooms into Coffee and Health Habits

00:18:05
Speaker
So that was kind of what I discovered about these mushrooms. And then it was like, that's great, but I still got to remember to take them. Like, you know, how good does a mushroom extract really sound? Like you want to put it in your mouth, you know? So there was that factor was sort of the next,
00:18:21
Speaker
component to tackle was how do I make this super easy and seamless into my current routine so that I can actually get the benefits? Because buying the but the the functional mushrooms is step one, but you're not going to get much benefit unless you're taking them consistently.
00:18:41
Speaker
So the idea became, why don't we get this into a product that I don't need a reminder for, that I actually look forward to taking every day, like coffee. And now you're able to get all of these benefits and it it's as simple as brewing your cup of coffee, you know.
00:19:01
Speaker
Yeah. So I was going to ask, why not just have some sort of concentrated pill of whatever it is that's in the mushroom to make you create this effect on your health?
00:19:12
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, sure. I mean, there there's nothing wrong with, you know, ah kind of different concentrates either in capsule form or tincture form. There's gummies. There's all sorts of different functional mushroom products. And while they're... So one answer to that question would be some compounds within the functional mushrooms like polysaccharides are actually hot water soluble.
00:19:38
Speaker
So they... break down very easily in hot water, which increases their bioavailability and lets your body absorb them. So that could be one benefit, um you know, to to drinking them in a hot beverage like a coffee or tea.
00:19:52
Speaker
but But to me, real honestly, like the biggest benefit is, you know, you don't have to remember to take them because you can go and buy some concentrate, a capsule, whatever, whatever you want to do.
00:20:05
Speaker
But where are you going to put you going to put it in your medicine cabinet? Are you going to put it you know, with your other vitamins? You know, I bet you probably have a fish oil tablet somewhere in a pantry that you haven't opened in six months.
00:20:17
Speaker
you know and And so that's that was sort of one thing that identified is that like we get really motivated. We're reading about this stuff. We're like, oh my God, they do what? Mushrooms will do this. That's amazing. And then we take, we buy it, it comes, we open it, we eat it on day one, eat it on day two.
00:20:34
Speaker
And then a week goes by and that sort of initial like excitement or motivation that you had to like implement this, it kind of falls off. And if if it falls off, then so do the benefits.
00:20:47
Speaker
And so you really got to be consistent. And I need no reminder to make coffee in the morning. no i know what you mean so ah key part of this holistic lifestyle is not that you blitz your body with something that is supposed to be good for it but that you deal with this on a long-term basis and actually change your lifestyle so that you are consuming products which you like you enjoy consuming eating drinking
00:21:19
Speaker
but at the same time, there are varieties of the product which include something which is going to benefit your health, like you say, coffee, with the functional mushrooms.
00:21:31
Speaker
Right, right, 100%. I mean, i'd say sort of a de facto slogan that I find myself repeating often is that healthy habits don't have to suck.
00:21:42
Speaker
And and yeah I mean by that that in order to create consistent, lasting, and sustainable change in your life,
00:21:54
Speaker
you can't, and the changes have to be something that you can do for a long period of time. So I don't know how familiar you are with something called the 75 hard.
00:22:06
Speaker
It's like a challenge thing that kind of like a discipline challenge or something that a lot of people do. um A lot of people kind of in the alternative media space are big on it, but essentially it's like 75 days straight.
00:22:19
Speaker
yeah You do like two workouts a day, drink a gallon of water a day, read, you know, 10 pages of a book or something. There's a whole list of different things that you can do and And it's supposed to be very challenging. It's like a, it's a hard thing that you commit to for 75 days.
00:22:33
Speaker
and that And that's great. And I understand the purpose of that. But I would venture to say that on 76, And most people stop doing all of those things because it sucks. It's just relief to not to Yeah. You're like, woo, we did it. Hooray, we did it.
00:22:49
Speaker
You know, and that's great. But like your diet isn't something that ends in in two months. Your diet is the way you eat for the rest of your life. So do you want a good diet or do you want a crash diet?
00:23:01
Speaker
And all of these things are like that. So yeah. Cut out sugary drinks. That sounds great and we all know we should probably do it, but until you're craving that sugary drink and then you're like, oh, it was just this one.
00:23:14
Speaker
you know So what if instead that sugary drink was something that kind of scratched that itch for you, but was a healthier choice? you know What if, okay, working out sucks, you hate going to the gym, it's super boring, you dread doing it every day, you never that's why you never stick to a thing.
00:23:30
Speaker
then maybe going to the gym isn't the way that you need to be working out. Maybe you need to go play pickleball or paddle or, you know, go take your dog on a run, you know, whatever it's going to work for you. And that's why i was saying earlier is holistic medicine is very important.
00:23:46
Speaker
individualized. you know It's got to be what works for you, your body, your lifestyle, your dreams and aspirations. And it doesn't matter that Joe Rogan you know talks about it on a podcast and some MMA fighter is winning championships doing that. It's like, if it's not going to work in your life and you're not sticking to it, then it doesn't matter. It's it's a cool thing that someone else does.
00:24:10
Speaker
It doesn't work. It doesn't work. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. ah You mentioned that there are different types of functional mushrooms and that yeah they impact different aspects of your life. But in your product, you have provided a holistic mixture of mushrooms to provide a balance of health.
00:24:30
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, totally. Right. Yeah, I can kind of go into some of those um if if you'd like. So... What I think is important is that what you've done is identified the products, the ah functional mushrooms that will add value to someone's health. Right.
00:24:46
Speaker
Someone hasn't got to say, well, this is my condition. I therefore need this particular coffee with this particular functional mushroom. and It's much more holistic approach that you've taken with it. Totally. Right.
00:25:00
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, totally. Yeah, I mean, the big the big five I would say that you see in a lot of things and kind of ah check most of the boxes are ah reishi, chaga, lion's mane, cordyceps, and turkey tail.
00:25:12
Speaker
Let's say you might find a couple others. We use a 10 mushroom blend for wine and use a 14 mushroom blend for coffee. So it really kind of depends. But largely, those those big five um kind of hit your head to toe. You get some cognitive support in there.
00:25:28
Speaker
You're helping your adrenal system, um decreasing cortisol production, getting a little bit better sleep. And we've found that especially having a lot of reishi in with our blends kind of cuts that like caffeine sort of uh like overstimulated feeling that you might get from the caffeine the reishi really helps balance that out so that you feel energized but not like you're tweaking yeah you know it all sounds great it really does but i can imagine that there is going to be some people listening who are going like so coffee that tastes of mushrooms
00:26:03
Speaker
Yeah, well, that's sort of the best the best part. I mean, i'd I'd say the way that we really distinguish ourselves against a lot of the competition out there is that we are the mushroom coffee for coffee lovers.
00:26:16
Speaker
We're one of the only mushroom coffees on the market that sells in whole bean infused coffee. um And the flavor is honestly negligible.
00:26:27
Speaker
It's a glycerin based distillate, so you don't have any strong flavors of like alcohol. And um it's just been the mushrooms have been extracted, you know, two times and three times for the the coffee such that you're you're losing a lot of the organic material and just getting down into the ah molecular compounds that are beneficial. So it's it's coffee that tastes like real good coffee.
00:26:52
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, crazy. But you you have yeah you have added into the roasting process the combination of different types of mushrooms, which add in these holistic health benefits. Yeah,

Innovation in Health Solutions

00:27:09
Speaker
that's right.
00:27:09
Speaker
cool it does sound extremely interesting and it's always and one of the things that always interests me is that some of these advancements in what is available in terms of the alternative health market come from individual entrepreneurs who've been on their own health journey and have done all the hard work the investigation and come up with a product which Actually, unless somebody told you, you probably wouldn't really know that right these things have been pointed to because their focus is on, I think, from what you're saying, creating ah really good coffee.
00:27:47
Speaker
It just happens to be really good coffee with these added benefits to it. Yeah, that's exactly it. That's brilliant. Now, Jordan, thank you very much. I've really enjoyed finding out about functional mushrooms and your coffee.
00:28:01
Speaker
Thank you very much for today. It's been really very interesting. Thank you so much for having me, Michael. Yeah, please check out any of my social media at Windensee Coffee on Instagram.

At Fit for My Age, our aim is proactive positive aging. Knowing the risks early is an important part of maintaining good health. That is why we recommend the annual health test from York Test.
