Introduction to 'The Breakfast Club' and Personal Significance
00:00:12
Speaker
Welcome back listeners to a new episode of Matt Goes to the Movies.
00:00:16
Speaker
You've seen the title of this episode, you hear the trailer in the background.
00:00:22
Speaker
Today I am here to talk about The Breakfast Club, not just in terms of the movie, but also in terms of what this movie has meant to me over the years.
00:00:35
Speaker
And an experience I've recently had with this movie that I never had before.
00:00:39
Speaker
It will be a different episode.
00:00:41
Speaker
I hope you like it because it is very different than what I have done
Why 'The Breakfast Club' is a Favorite and its Impact
00:00:47
Speaker
Now, from the moment I saw The Breakfast Club for the very first time, I knew that this would be my favorite movie of all time.
00:00:58
Speaker
It really spoke to me back then.
00:01:01
Speaker
It still speaks to me every single time I watch it.
00:01:06
Speaker
And quite recently, I watch this movie minimum once a year for the last 25 years of my life.
00:01:20
Speaker
It never loses any meaning on me whatsoever.
00:01:25
Speaker
But recently I had a chance to experience this movie in a much different way and it only further solidified my stance on this movie.
A Surprise Outdoor Screening Experience
00:01:36
Speaker
So what I mean by that is and just.
00:01:40
Speaker
you know, out of respect or whatever we'll call it.
00:01:44
Speaker
I'm going to leave the person's name out of this episode, but I was with my girlfriend at the time and she had surprised me one evening with, Hey, we're going to go out.
00:01:59
Speaker
Wouldn't tell me what was going on.
00:02:02
Speaker
And, you know, just, you know,
00:02:04
Speaker
We're going to do something.
00:02:05
Speaker
Just trust me, get ready and, you know, I'll drive out there.
00:02:13
Speaker
Lo and behold, where, you know, we live, the area around there, we're going towards the downtown area.
00:02:20
Speaker
I see a whole bunch of cars and I see a stage set up and I think, oh, cool.
00:02:26
Speaker
You know, we're going to some sort of outside local concert, which I
00:02:31
Speaker
Again, it's going to be a different episode.
00:02:32
Speaker
I'll let you listeners in.
00:02:34
Speaker
I sometimes have a very hard time dealing with...
00:02:38
Speaker
I don't necessarily do well out in spaces with a lot of people.
00:02:44
Speaker
Now, once I'm there and I get at the venue, if I'm with friends or in this case, if I am being there with my girlfriend, I start to settle down.
00:02:56
Speaker
My anxiety loosens up and I have a good time.
00:02:59
Speaker
So I was like, oh, great.
00:03:02
Speaker
Let's just see who this local band is, and this should be fun.
00:03:07
Speaker
Little did I know that we did not pull in to the lot with the band.
00:03:12
Speaker
We kept going down the street and pulled into a different lot.
00:03:17
Speaker
And inside that lot, there was a giant screen set up.
00:03:22
Speaker
And we pull into the lot.
00:03:24
Speaker
She scans her QR code.
00:03:27
Speaker
We pull up to the parking spot and she tells me that we are there to see the breakfast club.
00:03:33
Speaker
And the reason we were there to see the breakfast club is because in our time talking and getting to know each
Plot Summary and Personal Reflections
00:03:39
Speaker
other, it's still a fairly new relationship that we have together.
00:03:45
Speaker
She knows that this is my favorite movie and wanted to surprise me.
00:03:49
Speaker
which is an incredibly kind gesture.
00:03:51
Speaker
And like I said, just further solidifies my thoughts about this movie.
00:03:56
Speaker
Now, if you've never seen The Breakfast Club, shame on you.
00:04:02
Speaker
You really should see it.
00:04:05
Speaker
Again, this is my favorite movie of all time.
00:04:09
Speaker
Nothing has even come close ever to surpassing this movie for me.
00:04:15
Speaker
in terms of what it means to my life and the message that I think it sends.
00:04:19
Speaker
So if you've never seen it, you can stream it on Peacock with a premium subscription for $4.99 a month to get Peacock.
00:04:31
Speaker
This movie is worth it alone or just rent it off a streaming service.
00:04:36
Speaker
Or you can usually find it incredibly cheap now on Blu-ray and just have this movie as part of your collection.
00:04:42
Speaker
And the story of The Breakfast Club, if you have seen it, sorry that you already know this.
00:04:48
Speaker
If you haven't, here's the story.
00:04:50
Speaker
It's five high school students from different walks of life endure a Saturday detention under a power-hungry principle.
00:04:59
Speaker
The desperate group includes, like you heard in the trailer, a rebel, a princess, an outcast, a brain, and an athlete, the jock.
00:05:11
Speaker
Each one has a chance to tell their story, making the other see them a little differently.
00:05:15
Speaker
And when the day ends, they question whether school will ever be the same.
00:05:19
Speaker
And not only do they question if school ever be the same, I questioned if I ever thought about anything the same again.
Influence on Personal Growth and Human Connections
00:05:26
Speaker
This was the movie that really made me stop and think about what type of person I want to try and be.
00:05:35
Speaker
And I am not perfect at all.
00:05:39
Speaker
I still have a long ways to go to continue to try and better myself and be somebody that...
00:05:48
Speaker
Hopefully people respect and know that I always want what's best for everybody around me that's involved with my life.
00:05:59
Speaker
So this movie helped me think about how I wanted to treat people and how I think.
00:06:08
Speaker
You know, especially in this day and age, what I love about this movie is you can watch it in any era.
00:06:14
Speaker
You can watch it at any age.
00:06:16
Speaker
And no matter what time period you are in, this movie's message, I think, rings true every single time.
00:06:25
Speaker
And in a time right now when there's so many things wanting to tell us that we are so much different from each other and everything is so divided,
00:06:37
Speaker
I can't help but always think about how we are so much closer than they actually want us to believe.
00:06:45
Speaker
And if we all just took a second to really think about that, a lot of things could change.
Movies, Concerts, and Building Friendships
00:06:53
Speaker
And, you know, for me, one,
00:06:55
Speaker
One of the things about this podcast is I've mentioned it many, many times, but if you're a continued listener to the show, you know that I do a lot of episodes with Harrison, who runs the Basement Binge podcast.
00:07:13
Speaker
who I've never met in my entire life.
00:07:17
Speaker
Don't know if I ever will meet this guy.
00:07:20
Speaker
We've done, you know, video chats and things like that.
00:07:23
Speaker
So like we've seen each other, but we've never physically been in the same place at the same time because we live in different states.
00:07:31
Speaker
At this point in my life, I consider Harrison a friend of mine because of a podcast and because of our love for movies.
00:07:42
Speaker
Another person who's helped me with this show tremendously, Rob, I met through working at the same company and we developed a friendship because of movies and movies.
00:07:56
Speaker
You know, no matter what other differences we have in life, depending, I don't think Rob and I have a lot if he's listening to this episode, but we all come together over movies.
00:08:10
Speaker
And I think we can look at that from all walks of life and say, you
00:08:15
Speaker
geez, we have more in common than we actually think.
00:08:17
Speaker
Think about when you go to a concert, whether or not it's a rock concert, a country concert, jazz, whatever it may be.
00:08:28
Speaker
How many people are there?
00:08:30
Speaker
I've gone to just a disturbed concert with Brinking Benjamin and there's 10,000 people there.
00:08:40
Speaker
90% of I have probably never seen in my life or I will never see in my life again.
00:08:48
Speaker
But we are all there because of one reason, because of a love for music, because of a love for the band that's there.
00:08:58
Speaker
And in that moment, think about the fact of
00:09:02
Speaker
Everybody's having a good time.
Relationships and Shared Interests
00:09:07
Speaker
not anything else except for your mutual love of what's going on.
00:09:14
Speaker
You can relate that to sporting events.
00:09:16
Speaker
I live in Buffalo.
00:09:19
Speaker
Back when the Buffalo Sabres were good, it feels like half a century ago.
00:09:24
Speaker
Now it hasn't been that long.
00:09:26
Speaker
But when the Sabres were two years running one of the best teams in the NHL, I was in the party in the plaza for Chris Drury's goal to send a game into overtime and Max Afinaganov's goal to win the game in overtime.
00:09:43
Speaker
and complete strangers downtown hugging high-fiving screaming buying each other drinks nobody was an enemy that night everybody was a friend even if you didn't know them and that's what this movie does there are so many just powerful relatable scenes
00:10:06
Speaker
That you can apply to everyday life.
00:10:08
Speaker
And the reason I'm talking about it in the terms of I went out to see this movie as a surprise is because of the fact that the relationship that I am in right now.
00:10:23
Speaker
There was absolutely probably.
00:10:26
Speaker
And if she listens to this, maybe she gets a little upset about this, but I hope she understands the meaning behind it.
00:10:32
Speaker
There was absolutely no reason for us to actually ever.
00:10:37
Speaker
I don't know, find each other.
00:10:42
Speaker
just at the time, probably didn't know each other really from a hole in the wall.
00:10:47
Speaker
But there was just, you know, there was something there.
00:10:50
Speaker
And that's the thing, regardless of what you think you know about a person, what I thought I knew about her, what she maybe potentially thought she knew about me.
00:11:01
Speaker
I still don't know that before we got together.
00:11:06
Speaker
But there was one, you know, all it takes is one common denominator to see somebody in a different light.
00:11:15
Speaker
She did that for me.
00:11:18
Speaker
She's been awesome.
00:11:20
Speaker
And just one of the most like caring, funny people.
00:11:25
Speaker
coolest people I've ever met in my life.
00:11:29
Speaker
A super strong, independent woman who I respect and I admire and am really honored and proud to be with.
00:11:39
Speaker
I hope I can make her feel the same as we continue our journey.
00:11:44
Speaker
You know, with The Breakfast Club, you can get so many emotions.
Emotional Range and Timeless Relevance
00:11:50
Speaker
You can be angry at the screen because of some scenes how these guys treat each other.
00:11:56
Speaker
You can stop and take a deep reflection look.
00:12:02
Speaker
as to maybe some of the things that have happened to some of these people have happened in your own life and how it affected you or how you let it affect your behavior towards somebody else and not considering what they have going on in their life.
00:12:19
Speaker
That's one of the other things of this movie is, you know, nobody in this group considers what the other person is going through, what life is like for them.
00:12:29
Speaker
You know, they think, well,
00:12:30
Speaker
oh, the brain, it's so easy, he's so smart at school, but not understanding the pressure that he has to constantly be perfect and not
Character Struggles and Misconceptions
00:12:41
Speaker
And if he does, he doesn't know how to handle it.
00:12:47
Speaker
He considers committing suicide in this movie because he got an F in clap.
00:12:56
Speaker
John Bender, who everybody, you know, the other students think, oh, he's so cool.
00:13:03
Speaker
You know, oh, he's so cool.
00:13:06
Speaker
Well, that he's so cool, but like he's a loser.
00:13:09
Speaker
He doesn't matter.
00:13:11
Speaker
You know, he doesn't care about anything.
00:13:13
Speaker
This guy does care.
00:13:14
Speaker
He comes from a home where his dad puts a cigar out on his arm for spilling paint in the garage, which is a hugely powerful scene.
00:13:26
Speaker
just wants to be able to be heard.
00:13:30
Speaker
You have Andrew Clark, who's played by Emilio Estevez, and he is the jock and he's part of the captain of the wrestling team and get special treatment.
00:13:41
Speaker
But again, the immense pressure that's put on him by his father to be the best and cut up in school and make fun of people who are weak, where he wishes his knee would blow out.
00:13:52
Speaker
So his father just forgets about him.
00:13:56
Speaker
You have Claire, who, you know, the princess of the school, and he, you know, John Bender in there even says, oh, the school would probably shut down if you didn't show up.
00:14:09
Speaker
But again, she's torn between her parents because they use her as a means to feel like they're in control of the household and the relationship, which puts an enormous amount of pressure on her.
00:14:22
Speaker
And she doesn't know how to act or, you know, if she really is friends with the people that she's friends with.
00:14:30
Speaker
It's just an all around amazing, amazing cast and message.
00:14:37
Speaker
Just I moved every single time I watched this movie.
00:14:42
Speaker
The last time that I saw this when I was surprised when I was surprised at this outdoor showing, which was just so cool, not only because it was like the breakfast club, but it was just so cool to just like be in the back of the car.
00:14:56
Speaker
Tailgate up, so to speak, sitting, couple of blankets, and just watching this movie outside was one of the coolest experiences ever.
Outdoor Screening Experience and Its Significance
00:15:08
Speaker
And I've been to Endgame opening night with strangers high-fiving, clapping, cheering, hugging each other.
00:15:15
Speaker
This was truly really, really special, and it was the most that I've ever been moved by this movie because as I was watching it and as I was thinking about
00:15:24
Speaker
about how this movie still affects me to this day.
00:15:28
Speaker
I was thinking about this person next to me who has affected me in a unique and absolutely fantastic way in my life and has certainly helped me continue on the path that I hope I am on that people see to be a good person.
00:15:49
Speaker
You know, if she does listen to this episode, I don't know.
00:15:53
Speaker
But she has been an incredible part of my life in the early stages that it has been.
00:16:01
Speaker
But I am super thankful for it and super appreciative of this experience.
Conclusion and Audience Engagement
00:16:08
Speaker
So, again, this is a much different episode, not really talking about the movie so much and, you know, scenes or whatnot.
00:16:17
Speaker
But I would like to take a couple minutes to talk about some of the scenes in this movie as spoilers if you haven't seen it.
00:16:24
Speaker
So, you know, I apologize.
00:16:26
Speaker
Maybe pause this episode if you haven't seen it because there are going to be some spoilers here.
00:16:32
Speaker
So one scene that I absolutely love is just the detention where they're in detention, but where John Bender is talking with the principal and he just keeps hitting day after day after day of detention.
00:16:48
Speaker
The principal, Richard Vernon, who just says, you want another one?
00:16:51
Speaker
You've got one more right there.
00:16:53
Speaker
You're not careful.
00:16:54
Speaker
I got you for the rest of your natural born life.
00:16:57
Speaker
And then he gives them the old don't mess with the bull.
00:16:59
Speaker
You'll get the horns.
00:17:00
Speaker
The cheesiest line ever, like just incredibly funny.
00:17:06
Speaker
And, you know, you can see Bender acts like he doesn't care.
00:17:13
Speaker
But after he leaves, you can tell that he does care.
00:17:17
Speaker
There's a struggle there of do I want, you know, do I really want this image?
00:17:22
Speaker
Is this what I want to keep doing?
00:17:25
Speaker
But he doesn't know anything else because the kids in the room with him, the other classmates, you know, at the beginning, think less of him.
00:17:33
Speaker
They tell him, you know, you don't even count.
00:17:35
Speaker
You don't matter if you disappeared.
00:17:38
Speaker
It wouldn't do anything.
00:17:40
Speaker
You know, that scene is it's funny.
00:17:43
Speaker
And then there's the emotional tug on it.
00:17:46
Speaker
There is the scene where they actually are all smoking a joint together and they're laughing and dancing.
00:17:57
Speaker
Again, that's the ebbs and flow of this movie where it can in one moment have you laughing at the jokes that are in this movie.
00:18:06
Speaker
And then the very next bit of dialogue has you just stopping and deeply thinking about how this can relate to you or how this is affecting the character.
00:18:17
Speaker
It is one of the best examples of
00:18:23
Speaker
of knowing how to change your tones at the right time in a movie I have ever seen because it always, always hits for me.
00:18:34
Speaker
Again, my favorite movie of all time.
00:18:37
Speaker
I cannot imagine anything will ever, ever take The Breakfast Club's place on my top list.
00:18:44
Speaker
So that's really going to be it for this episode.
00:18:48
Speaker
I don't want to just continue to ramble on about
00:18:52
Speaker
You know, anything else that goes on this movie.
00:18:55
Speaker
So what I'll leave you with is if you haven't seen this movie again, check it out.
00:19:00
Speaker
If you subscribe to Peacock, you can watch it right now on your streaming service.
00:19:05

00:19:21
Speaker
If you've never watched it, pay a couple of bucks, check it out.
00:19:25
Speaker
I don't think you'll be disappointed.
00:19:27
Speaker
And if it's been a little while since you've seen it, pop it in again because, like I said,
00:19:31
Speaker
I think at any point in time, you can watch this movie.
00:19:36
Speaker
You can relate it to the time that we're in and you can relate it to a time in your life and maybe reflect on something that you want to think about again.
00:19:44
Speaker
So listeners, I hope you've enjoyed this episode.
00:19:50
Speaker
It has been a little different, more of just a personal story for me.
00:19:53
Speaker
So I appreciate you taking time to, to let me do this and listening to this episode.
