Introduction to Episode Four Discussion
00:00:02
Speaker
All right, everyone.
00:00:04
Speaker
Welcome back to Matt Goes to the Movies.
00:00:06
Speaker
We are going to talk about episode four of Halo called Reach.
00:00:12
Speaker
Rob, I'm going to let you start because we might have some different opinions.
Debating Master Chief's Battles and VFX
00:00:19
Speaker
So we kind of pick up right where things leave off in the previous episode where, you know, there's the master chief and, and the, uh, private that he's helping or the sergeant that he's helping are in the church and the, uh, the bomb goes off.
00:00:34
Speaker
And, uh, you know, from right there, the whole episode is, I would say fairly entertaining to me.
00:00:42
Speaker
You get some cool shots of invisible elites just tossing people around on the street when they're walking through that one sort of like outdoor market area.
00:00:51
Speaker
I didn't expect that to happen and it was really cool.
00:00:55
Speaker
We get a lot of Master Chief fighting these elites without his armor.
00:01:00
Speaker
He has no firearms.
00:01:01
Speaker
I thought it was surprisingly cool.
00:01:03
Speaker
The enemy felt dangerous to me and yet
00:01:07
Speaker
the master chief is still able to defeat that enemy.
00:01:09
Speaker
And I was actually really impressed with how the VFX looked in this episode.
00:01:14
Speaker
It started off pretty good.
00:01:16
Speaker
This show does some things weird, but to me, when this show does action, when this show gives us battles, it really does a great job.
00:01:25
Speaker
It's not a perfect episode, but I was entertained by this.
00:01:37
Speaker
I am just going to say this as nicely as I possibly can.
Critique on Master Chief's Armor Choices
00:01:43
Speaker
Every one of what I just said was wrong.
00:01:45
Speaker
No, I'm not saying you're wrong, but.
00:01:50
Speaker
I am so sick and tired of this show.
00:02:00
Speaker
Regardless, there are some.
00:02:03
Speaker
There are some cool things that happened in this episode, but I'm so sick and tired of seeing him fight outside of the armor.
00:02:13
Speaker
I know that's what this show is, and maybe I should just get over it and my enjoyment would increase because I think there are some good things in this episode, but I'm just done.
00:02:24
Speaker
I'm so sick and tired of it.
00:02:26
Speaker
They took his armor.
00:02:28
Speaker
We're going to have a whole nother episode where
00:02:33
Speaker
It's just like they sat there.
00:02:36
Speaker
They entered like keys introduces him.
00:02:40
Speaker
And, oh, this is, you know, him as master chief.
00:02:43
Speaker
Nobody knows him as master chief anymore.
00:02:45
Speaker
He's a goddamn guy.
00:02:52
Speaker
But I will say some positive things after this.
00:02:55
Speaker
But yeah, I just I'm so sick and tired of it with him not being in the suit.
00:03:02
Speaker
And I'm so sick and tired of this.
00:03:05
Speaker
You got it in the first episode.
00:03:07
Speaker
But, oh, you know, people just keep talking about things aren't important.
00:03:13
Speaker
Your knickknacks aren't freaking important.
00:03:15
Speaker
Your goddamn life is terrible.
00:03:18
Speaker
Like that whole scene was okay.
00:03:19
Speaker
So I'm going to be 100% with you on that.
Analysis of the Shopkeeper Scene
00:03:22
Speaker
There's, there's actually two bits.
00:03:24
Speaker
There's, uh, there's that one.
00:03:25
Speaker
And there's the one that leads up to it where they're having this conversation around, you know, him being able to choose pick heads like 11 times in a row.
00:03:33
Speaker
That whole thing was dumb and a complete waste of time.
00:03:37
Speaker
And, you know, but I will say they follow it up with a very what I thought was a really kind of a cool line where, you know, just talking about how he knows that he's going to be able to go into battle and he's going to be able to get out.
00:03:51
Speaker
And she says to him, must be nice.
00:03:53
Speaker
And he responds, not really.
00:03:55
Speaker
That was a cool line.
00:03:57
Speaker
I thought that was a cool moment.
00:03:59
Speaker
We don't get a lot of that in this show on on average.
00:04:04
Speaker
But to your previous point, when they get to the shopkeeper and they're, and it feels like the scene is just there to, to show us technology from our epoch, you know, from like our time or, or the time right before ours.
00:04:19
Speaker
So things that we would recognize and this shopkeeper is putting all this importance on it.
00:04:25
Speaker
And it's, you can't protect any of it if you're dead.
00:04:28
Speaker
Like the whole conversation with the shopkeeper,
00:04:31
Speaker
is a waste of minutes for the episode.
00:04:34
Speaker
And not only that, but just before that, John is running and running and running.
00:04:38
Speaker
He's got a mission.
00:04:39
Speaker
Get the fleet comp, get his armor, get, get weaponry, do something to protect and help these people.
00:04:45
Speaker
And he stops to have this full on conversation with this woman when it's like, dude, I, you were just running to try to get somewhere before that.
00:04:53
Speaker
That was, it makes no sense.
00:04:56
Speaker
Do you notice the original Xbox on the shelf?
00:05:00
Speaker
Oh, I did not see that.
00:05:01
Speaker
I wish I would have caught that.
00:05:06
Speaker
Well, I guess maybe not, but it was very clear as day to me.
00:05:13
Speaker
It's just sitting back there on the shelf.
00:05:19
Speaker
You know, the other thing, I wasn't really a fan.
00:05:22
Speaker
I didn't really think Keys' speech was great.
00:05:28
Speaker
You know, certainly I know it's, you know, I mean, let's face it.
00:05:33
Speaker
Anytime anybody talks about a motivational speech in a movie, you, I don't know.
00:05:39
Speaker
What's the one like that everybody thinks of before going into a battle Independence Day.
00:05:45
Speaker
That's the one that was immediately in my mind.
00:05:47
Speaker
You know, go quietly.
00:05:51
Speaker
July 4th will no longer be seen as an American holiday.
00:05:55
Speaker
I didn't really feel it was all that great.
00:06:05
Speaker
This episode did do some things well.
00:06:07
Speaker
I will admit it 100%.
00:06:12
Speaker
I did care about Keyes' sacrifice.
00:06:15
Speaker
I cared about that.
00:06:17
Speaker
I thought the action was really good.
00:06:21
Speaker
I do feel like the action scenes were good.
Character Motivations: Keyes, The Arbiter, and McKee
00:06:33
Speaker
Is the covenant warrior that goes after chief, is that going to end up being the arbiter?
00:06:41
Speaker
So if you... Because the armor looks very familiar.
00:06:47
Speaker
It's a different armor than the other ones.
00:06:52
Speaker
What are your thoughts on that?
00:06:53
Speaker
Did I miss something?
00:06:54
Speaker
Am I just... Am I pushing?
00:06:57
Speaker
I thought that might've been at first because we recognize we see an elite with what appears to be special armor.
00:07:03
Speaker
It does look different.
00:07:04
Speaker
It does not look like the rest of it.
00:07:06
Speaker
It seems like this character has a little more weight.
00:07:10
Speaker
Um, it seems like this armor is different.
00:07:12
Speaker
It seems like this character is a little bit special.
00:07:15
Speaker
And I don't think necessarily that this is, although we, I don't know that in the games we ever actually learned what the arbiters like given name is.
00:07:24
Speaker
We just know him as the arbiter.
00:07:28
Speaker
It might be the, the elite that, that eventually becomes the arbiter.
00:07:33
Speaker
They do have somebody cast as that role.
00:07:37
Speaker
Like if you look through the casting, um, you can find, and I forget the actor's name and I, and I'm going to try to pull it up here.
00:07:45
Speaker
Um, there is somebody that they have listed as, as that voice actor.
00:07:50
Speaker
Um, so I think at some point you'll get it, but you really have to have, um,
00:07:55
Speaker
an elite commander fail before they give him that title.
00:08:00
Speaker
I don't, I don't remember like in the second halo game, the arbiter is, is kind of a title that's passed down from, from,
00:08:09
Speaker
warrior to warrior.
00:08:10
Speaker
And when that one dies, they just call the next one up.
00:08:13
Speaker
It didn't seem like they had somebody already in that role.
00:08:16
Speaker
So it doesn't seem like it's a continuous role, like where there's always somebody in the role of the arbiter, but they could certainly change that for the game.
00:08:22
Speaker
That could be the previous one, you know, before they move on to the next one.
00:08:26
Speaker
It's hard to know.
00:08:27
Speaker
But I definitely caught that.
00:08:29
Speaker
And it seemed as though
00:08:31
Speaker
He was prepared to finish the job and McKee stopped him, which I thought was kind of interesting.
00:08:38
Speaker
What's what's the benefit to her to stop that?
00:08:42
Speaker
You know, whose side is she really on?
00:08:43
Speaker
Whose side is she playing?
00:08:47
Speaker
I don't particularly care, I guess, on that front.
00:08:50
Speaker
I'm still trying to figure out why she's alive.
00:08:52
Speaker
You know, somehow McKee has returned.
00:09:03
Speaker
I'm going to give this episode credit here.
Dr. Halsey's Emotional Complexity
00:09:07
Speaker
This is the first episode where I actually really, really was intrigued and interested by Dr. Halsey.
00:09:23
Speaker
This was the first episode where I really said, okay, you got me.
00:09:31
Speaker
Your performance and your story here actually has interested me.
00:09:41
Speaker
I actually felt like she had a huge, huge remorse for Commander Keys.
00:09:53
Speaker
I liked her a lot in this episode.
00:09:56
Speaker
I want to talk about that dynamic specifically, her and Keys.
00:09:59
Speaker
But before we really touch on that, I want to say I definitely agree that she had some of the most compelling pieces of her story so far.
00:10:09
Speaker
I think I'm into her story a little bit more than you are.
00:10:12
Speaker
But still, when you see she actually had the opportunity to behave as a human, not as a kind of
00:10:21
Speaker
not as a sociopath doctor who's kidnapping children in the middle of the night and making them pump full of HGH to turn them into super warriors.
00:10:29
Speaker
Like, you know, there's some ethical concerns there, just a little, just one or two, you know, but, but beyond that, it doesn't seem as though she particularly, um,
00:10:40
Speaker
cares for anyone or anything.
00:10:42
Speaker
It almost seems as though to steal a line from Jurassic Park, she doesn't necessarily stop long enough to worry about whether or not she should, just more could she, to borrow Dr. Malcolm's line a little bit.
00:10:56
Speaker
It seems like she's more interested in just the creation of the Spartan program and what they're capable of and ensure safe humanity, whatever.
00:11:03
Speaker
They really haven't gone in enough, I think, into why that that program was created in the first place.
00:11:11
Speaker
You know, in the books, the extended lore, the Spartan program is actually up and running even before the covenant make first contact.
00:11:20
Speaker
It's they're actually to help with an insurrection is really what they're there for.
00:11:24
Speaker
which really would have played well into the story this show is trying to tell, where they're painting the UNSC as this fascist, oppressive regime full of propaganda and smoke and mirrors and all kinds of nastiness behind closed doors.
00:11:39
Speaker
It really would play well into that.
00:11:41
Speaker
But that's not, again, that's not the story they're trying to tell.
00:11:45
Speaker
Getting back to...
Debating Captain Keyes' Early Death
00:11:47
Speaker
When when she realizes that Keys is dead, that to me was was really I was surprised at how much that did affect her.
00:11:59
Speaker
I that kind of I was like, wow, OK, that's an interesting choice there.
00:12:04
Speaker
And I want to kind of, it's something I've been thinking about since I watched this episode.
00:12:09
Speaker
I want to say that this show made a mistake by killing off captain keys this early into the series, because he was a character that really leveraged a lot of stories into each other.
00:12:22
Speaker
And a lot of characters conflicts, he was kind of in the center of he, he was, you know, he was kind of that, that,
00:12:30
Speaker
Again, that leverage point between Halsey and Miranda and between John and the new Oni chief, all of these characters kind of bounced off of him into each other.
00:12:42
Speaker
And he was kind of that fulcrum in between.
00:12:45
Speaker
And for them to take him out this early into the series...
00:12:50
Speaker
I feel like there's so many interesting things that he could have been a part of for the story they're trying to tell, especially as he believed John, but was still having to work for ONI and the UNSC.
00:13:03
Speaker
wow, that really would have been interesting once eventually the Spartans are able to get off of here.
00:13:09
Speaker
Certainly we wanted to see Keyes get on the Pillar of Autumn and possibly crash land on the Halo ring.
00:13:17
Speaker
Okay, they weren't going to give us that.
00:13:19
Speaker
It didn't really feel like a big death.
00:13:22
Speaker
You know how sometimes name characters when they die, it feels like it's a momentous thing.
00:13:28
Speaker
It didn't really have kind of...
00:13:31
Speaker
that impact on me, I guess.
00:13:34
Speaker
How did it hit you?
Challenges in Adapting Halo for TV
00:13:38
Speaker
I mean, it definitely didn't hit me.
00:13:42
Speaker
And I think because, again, as a whole, this episode really just made me, as soon as I could tell that this whole thing
00:13:55
Speaker
Was going to be just again.
00:13:59
Speaker
And I really thought.
00:14:01
Speaker
This could be the episode.
00:14:02
Speaker
Where it was the turning point of.
00:14:12
Speaker
We're going to get full blown Master Chief.
00:14:14
Speaker
Because it's going to be.
00:14:20
Speaker
We're going after those bastards.
00:14:24
Speaker
But by the time I realized we might get a whole nother episode of this crap.
00:14:30
Speaker
And again, like I said, maybe I just, you know, at this point I can't just turn off what I want from this series.
00:14:38
Speaker
And that's the problem.
00:14:42
Speaker
And I know it's been like that, but just the realization that Jesus, we're probably going to get another whole episode before he even finds Eckerson and whatever else is going to happen.
00:14:55
Speaker
I just, this isn't halo to me anymore.
00:14:59
Speaker
Like this, this would have been a really good episode.
00:15:02
Speaker
If this was anything else, make a few minor modifications.
00:15:10
Speaker
I think this actually would be a really good episode.
00:15:12
Speaker
Um, I don't think this would be a good series because I think there's some things in this series that are still, even if it was just a regular TV show would not be all that interesting.
00:15:26
Speaker
But to me, it's just... It's still... It gets further... It got further away from what I want.
00:15:33
Speaker
I totally understand where you're coming from.
00:15:36
Speaker
I think I've made peace with that a little bit differently to the point where it's like, okay, we know that when...
00:15:43
Speaker
television and film has to adapt characters that are traditionally only seen with their helmet on, you know, especially when you've got name actors, like there's a reason why in Avengers, Robert Downey Jr. Always has his little helmet flip up when he's going to talk to somebody, despite the fact that he doesn't need it to it's
00:16:00
Speaker
Because you want to see Robert Downey Jr.'s face like the studio is paying him a lot of money.
00:16:04
Speaker
You're going to you're going to see his face.
00:16:06
Speaker
I mean, they even did it with the Power Rangers reboot movie, and those weren't well-known people.
00:16:11
Speaker
As soon as they got into the costume at the end, their mask was flipped up the entire time.
00:16:16
Speaker
Like and that's like Power Rangers never had masks.
00:16:20
Speaker
They always had helmets.
00:16:21
Speaker
But yeah, it's just it's a Hollywood thing.
00:16:25
Speaker
Yeah, and you definitely saw that, I think, in the most recent Spider-Man film, especially spoilers for anybody who hasn't seen No Way Home.
00:16:35
Speaker
Skip forward like 15 seconds.
00:16:37
Speaker
But especially when the three of them are all together, they kind of almost have to take their masks off just so you can tell which guy is which.
00:16:43
Speaker
Because if you look quickly, sometimes the suit looks a little... So I kind of get that.
00:16:46
Speaker
And to some extent, you can't really see...
00:16:50
Speaker
emotion when a guy's got a helmet on, you can't really see as much.
00:16:53
Speaker
I mean, they can do that little trick where they show inside the helmet.
00:16:56
Speaker
I mean, there's plenty of ways to do that, I guess.
00:16:58
Speaker
So I've maybe already killed my own point to some extent.
00:17:03
Speaker
the danger level ramps up a little bit when they don't have their suits.
00:17:06
Speaker
So I kind of see what they're trying to do.
00:17:10
Speaker
I think overall the battle scenes were just so good.
00:17:13
Speaker
You know, occasionally, you know, you and I have both complained about shaky cam usage.
00:17:17
Speaker
I sort of liked it here.
00:17:19
Speaker
I felt like the overall chaos and intensity of that battle really translated well.
00:17:24
Speaker
And I think I was just enjoying that so much that I kind of was like, well, you know, I kind of really want to see master chief doing master chief things, not,
00:17:32
Speaker
sort of just like whatever whatever we got it my preference would be something different but i did still enjoy for what it was worth uh what we got yeah no i i think the action was pretty good quality and even the shaky cam did not bother me in this episode um i did you know i thought maybe there were one too many oh my god grenade explosions where people go flying um
00:18:02
Speaker
I think I counted four in this episode where it was like, all right, I'm, I'm kind of over everybody getting blown backwards, but I guess my biggest gripe with him not being in the suit is I understand that it's, you know, the, the program and everything, but I mean, he took a pretty good licking without the suit on.
Master Chief's Suit: Is It Necessary?
00:18:25
Speaker
And if it wasn't for him getting shot, like it's like almost nothing was happening to him.
00:18:31
Speaker
Like, he's getting punched and kicked around by a, like, not a brute, but you know what I'm saying.
00:18:38
Speaker
And a foot tall alien.
00:18:40
Speaker
And he's like, oh, I got it.
00:18:44
Speaker
So I kind of just like, all right, well, then what the hell?
00:18:47
Speaker
Like, what the hell is the point of the suit?
00:18:48
Speaker
Because he can go toe to toe.
00:18:51
Speaker
Like, it's not like the suit gives him any more advanced reflexes or anything like that.
00:18:57
Speaker
So, yeah, I guess, actually, what's the point of it?
00:19:00
Speaker
What's the point of the suit?
00:19:02
Speaker
So he can take a plasma blast.
00:19:05
Speaker
Well, yeah, I mean, that would, that would be the benefit, I guess.
00:19:07
Speaker
I think being able to see that, um, that needle blast that killed Vanek, that was the way they did.
00:19:14
Speaker
That was kind of cool.
00:19:18
Speaker
As we were really starting to like him too.
00:19:20
Speaker
So that I think will have an impact on us, uh, moving forward.
00:19:24
Speaker
But I, I sort of dug that, um,
00:19:27
Speaker
And I think you can't have them in their suits to do that.
00:19:31
Speaker
But how much, no, true.
00:19:33
Speaker
How much cooler, though, would it have been for Master Chief to light up that plasma sword in his armor?
00:19:43
Speaker
Because it was, I sat there and in my head, like it instantaneously snapped where I was like, that was cool.
00:19:51
Speaker
But it could have been so much cooler.
00:19:55
Speaker
Yeah, I had a it's funny.
00:19:57
Speaker
So we're watching this and my son said to me, he said, Dad, why doesn't anybody just pick up the plasma swords that are laying like everywhere?
00:20:04
Speaker
I said, I don't know.
00:20:05
Speaker
Maybe they don't know how to do that yet.
00:20:07
Speaker
And then as soon as John grabbed it, we were like, we both just stood up and were pretty excited about that moment because it it was well shot.
00:20:15
Speaker
I mean, again, the battle itself, the action scenes.
00:20:19
Speaker
I think landed really well.
00:20:22
Speaker
Again, if you, if you prefer him to be in the suit, I do too.
00:20:28
Speaker
I do too, because that's kind of what we want.
00:20:31
Speaker
That's kind of what the whole thing is supposed to be about.
00:20:34
Speaker
You mentioned that we might get one more episode like this.
00:20:37
Speaker
I, I actually think we're probably going to get a little more than that.
00:20:40
Speaker
Just looking at the,
00:20:41
Speaker
number of episodes in the episode names again.
00:20:45
Speaker
Um, you know, we, we haven't wasted any more time on the Soren, you know, his family and that side story in Quan Ha.
00:20:51
Speaker
We haven't gotten a chance to waste some time on that lately.
00:20:54
Speaker
So brace yourself.
00:20:55
Speaker
That's coming next episode.
00:20:57
Speaker
I promise you we're getting some of that.
00:20:59
Speaker
Hopefully we do spend some time back on reach with what's going on.
00:21:04
Speaker
you know, you got to see what happened with high command.
00:21:07
Speaker
You know, they, they just pissed off to somewhere else in the galaxy.
00:21:10
Speaker
So what are they actually doing?
00:21:13
Speaker
Are we going to be focusing on Margaret, you know, and I can't imagine they're just killing her off.
00:21:18
Speaker
So I think we're going to be spending some time on some of those other things, you know, with the penultimate episode being called Thermopylae.
00:21:26
Speaker
I feel like that'll be
00:21:28
Speaker
kind of if, if they're going to adapt anything of halo reach the game that is among the best in the series, when you, when you ask long time fans of this game series, which game is their favorite, uh, reaches right up there.
00:21:43
Speaker
It's like top three for almost everybody.
00:21:45
Speaker
I, in fact, I don't know anybody that doesn't have reach top three or top two.
00:21:52
Speaker
if there was going to be an episode that adapted any of that, especially that, you know, your mission is to survive.
00:21:58
Speaker
That is, that was a cool moment in the game.
00:22:01
Speaker
I'm just going to say, I remember that.
00:22:03
Speaker
I remember thinking like, what does that mean?
00:22:05
Speaker
And you know, you just like, okay, geez, I'm just getting overrun here.
00:22:09
Speaker
So how am I getting out of this?
00:22:10
Speaker
How am I getting out of this?
00:22:11
Speaker
And then eventually you realize, Oh, you don't.
00:22:17
Speaker
And that's the point, you know, like it,
00:22:20
Speaker
I think we might get a little bit of that in, uh, in episode seven, uh, before we actually get, you know, the pillar of autumn or whatever they're going to use to stand in for it.
00:22:29
Speaker
If they're not going to actually use that ship's name to, uh, fly off the remaining survivors towards the halo ring.
00:22:37
Speaker
Um, I think those are, yeah, those are really, really good points.
00:22:50
Speaker
The last thing that I have to say about this episode is, and maybe I'm missing something from the video games.
Cortana's Role and Dynamic with Master Chief
00:22:58
Speaker
Because if I remember correctly, this didn't happen until like four or five.
00:23:03
Speaker
Because I don't remember anything about Halo Guardians.
00:23:08
Speaker
I really don't at all.
00:23:12
Speaker
Interesting ruffle that they have Cortana.
00:23:18
Speaker
That is interesting.
00:23:21
Speaker
Whether or not they can actually make her do anything, we really haven't actually spoken much about Cortana.
00:23:27
Speaker
And getting back to our list of things that we wish this was, so much of what makes Halo fun in terms of the story.
00:23:34
Speaker
And I know that when you see people complain about this series online and then you see the comment section, people are like,
00:23:43
Speaker
The story for Halo was always stupid.
00:23:44
Speaker
There was never a story to it anyways.
00:23:46
Speaker
Well, there actually was.
00:23:47
Speaker
You know, that's not really like the main reason you play it.
00:23:50
Speaker
You play it because it's got really tight first person shooter mechanics.
00:23:54
Speaker
It's got fun settings.
00:23:55
Speaker
It's got great music.
00:23:56
Speaker
And it's a great power fantasy.
00:23:59
Speaker
It's just so much fun.
00:24:01
Speaker
It's well executed and everything it does.
00:24:03
Speaker
But the parts of the story that are compelling that people really do get into is that dynamic between Chief and Cortana.
00:24:12
Speaker
we really haven't gotten much of it.
00:24:13
Speaker
And I feel like it's, it's just, again, missed opportunity because there's so much you can do with that.
00:24:18
Speaker
There's so much about that.
00:24:19
Speaker
That's compelling.
00:24:21
Speaker
So we haven't really seen her.
00:24:22
Speaker
I feel like in these next three episodes, before we get to the season finale, we're going to see something with that.
00:24:28
Speaker
We're going to see something between her and McKee and, and hopefully it sets up to a good finale.
00:24:35
Speaker
Um, it will be interesting.
00:24:38
Speaker
I, I, yeah, there's, I,
00:24:40
Speaker
You know, that's the thing.
00:24:41
Speaker
You said it like, yes, there's tight shooter mechanics, everything like that.
00:24:45
Speaker
But behind all that, too.
00:24:48
Speaker
Yes, the story is.
00:24:50
Speaker
you know, Cortana and Master Chief.
00:24:52
Speaker
But there's also there really is a good story behind Halo in those first three games.
00:25:01
Speaker
I really have to go back through.
00:25:03
Speaker
Don't forget ODST.
00:25:04
Speaker
That's probably the most story intense game out of the whole season or out of the whole series.
00:25:11
Speaker
Yeah, but like with one in three, I mean...
00:25:15
Speaker
I did find that story just insanely engaging with the great journey and everything involved in the Arbiter becoming an ally.
00:25:26
Speaker
I really did think that was interesting.
00:25:31
Speaker
And yeah, I just, I don't know.
00:25:36
Speaker
I'm curious to see what is going to happen with Cortana here, like why that's going on, but we'll go from there.
00:25:44
Speaker
Yeah, I agree with that.
00:25:46
Speaker
I personally did get into the story.
00:25:48
Speaker
I did like all of those elements.
00:25:49
Speaker
And I think especially that dynamic with the Arbiter, that whole story, when you see more of the profits and things like that,
00:25:59
Speaker
and you really start to understand their level.
00:26:01
Speaker
Uh, you know, the covenant is functionally an alien cult is really what you discover it to be.
00:26:08
Speaker
And that infighting that starts to happen as you progress through the game, uh, as, as parts of the covenant break away, um, that does start to get really interesting.
00:26:19
Speaker
Um, the grave mind stuff really starts to get kind of weird.
00:26:24
Speaker
The mystery around the forerunners is kind of interesting.
00:26:27
Speaker
I wish that they would just eventually come out.
00:26:29
Speaker
And maybe they've done it in some of the expanded books.
00:26:32
Speaker
But they would just come out and really explain exactly what it is.
00:26:36
Speaker
I think I'm kind of tired of guessing around some of the forerunner stuff.
00:26:39
Speaker
But overall, I'm with you.
00:26:40
Speaker
I think the story is much better than people give it credit for.
00:26:44
Speaker
So, I mean, we're still... I mean, especially
Technical Issues with Paramount+
00:26:50
Speaker
We're still going to go through and...
00:26:53
Speaker
We're going to get through the rest of these episodes and see where it goes.
00:26:59
Speaker
I'll tell you, this is just a thing.
00:27:03
Speaker
For some reason, I don't know what it is.
00:27:05
Speaker
I think I'm just going to delete the app and redownload it.
00:27:09
Speaker
Whenever I watch a TV series on Paramount+, whenever it goes to the commercial,
00:27:16
Speaker
Every single time now, it rewinds back to the very beginning of that scene.
00:27:23
Speaker
So you know how, like, Rob, it's broken down in chunks, like if you were to press the arrow to fast forward or rewind or any of that?
00:27:30
Speaker
So I get through the first, I get through the first part of it and, and it goes to the commercial.
00:27:36
Speaker
It runs through like a minute and 30 seconds worth of commercials.
00:27:40
Speaker
And it starts back from the very first, that very first scene.
00:27:45
Speaker
And then I, I fast forward it to where it starts.
00:27:50
Speaker
it goes through that part and then the commercial hits and then it rewinds back to that chunk of the section.
00:27:57
Speaker
And it is so annoying.
00:27:59
Speaker
I do know what you mean because I'm experiencing the exact same thing.
00:28:09
Speaker
Get your act together, Paramount.
00:28:10
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know if it's... Do better.
00:28:13
Speaker
Like, it's just, it's so annoying.
00:28:17
Speaker
I'm just like, why?
00:28:18
Speaker
Why is this happening?
00:28:20
Speaker
Outside of football season, the only reason I really log into Paramount is for this show.
00:28:25
Speaker
There's, I mean, there's maybe a couple, every once in a while there might be a movie on there that we're going to review that I've been able to watch on Paramount, but for the most part, like, I'm not in the app that often.
00:28:37
Speaker
No, I mean, there's nothing super.
00:28:41
Speaker
I mean, Transformers Rise of the Beast is on there.
00:28:47
Speaker
But yeah, Paramount Plus is not a destination app for me.
00:29:02
Speaker
We'll we'll see here.
Episode Ratings and Opinions
00:29:07
Speaker
Rob, do you have any other notes on this episode?
00:29:11
Speaker
I think it's time to grab some popcorn.
00:29:18
Speaker
And for me, I know I just said I'm done.
00:29:21
Speaker
However, I'm still going to rate this.
00:29:27
Speaker
I'm going to rate this episode on what.
00:29:31
Speaker
Not what I want it to be and what it was.
00:29:36
Speaker
Sitting here talking about it, I can get past some of these things again.
00:29:43
Speaker
For a for a casual person or anything like that, I would say this episode's a solid three and a half buckets.
00:29:52
Speaker
I think there's some things wrong with it.
00:29:54
Speaker
For me personally.
00:29:55
Speaker
It's it represents everything that I'm sick and tired of with the show.
00:30:01
Speaker
So it's two buckets.
00:30:03
Speaker
But I really feel that there are good.
00:30:06
Speaker
I feel that there's really good things here.
00:30:07
Speaker
And if you would just give me Master Chief in this episode, if you would give me Master Chief and because he went on the lam, so to speak, and still had his armor and the other Spartans didn't, I don't think any of this episode...
00:30:23
Speaker
kind of goes without a hitch.
00:30:24
Speaker
I mean, Christ, you could have him carrying around his helmet for all I care or have an attachment on the back on his back where then he can just pop his helmet off.
00:30:34
Speaker
I'd say this episode was a solid four and a half buckets.
00:30:37
Speaker
If you would give me Master Chief the way I want him.
00:30:41
Speaker
But I do think there's a good episode here.
00:30:44
Speaker
Yeah, so I'm just going to go straight to four.
00:30:48
Speaker
That's where I've got it.
00:30:50
Speaker
I like the action.
00:30:52
Speaker
I liked just everything about the battle scenes.
00:30:56
Speaker
I like the feel of it.
00:30:57
Speaker
I like the fear that the enemy introduced into the human combatants.
00:31:03
Speaker
the sense of danger.
00:31:04
Speaker
The, the, the CG was well done overall.
00:31:08
Speaker
I felt like the VFX were well done.
00:31:11
Speaker
It was better than I was expecting it to be.
00:31:13
Speaker
I was expecting to hate some of it.
00:31:15
Speaker
I was expecting it to look cartoonish, but I felt like it was, it was well done.
00:31:20
Speaker
I really enjoyed a lot of it.
00:31:22
Speaker
I was very entertained by this.
00:31:24
Speaker
It has some problems again.
00:31:26
Speaker
So that's where I'm going right to a four and, uh,
00:31:30
Speaker
No additional asterisks for me on this.
00:31:34
Speaker
one of the better episodes in terms of entertainment value, I think that we've gotten.
00:31:39
Speaker
And, and really the, the best episode of the series are the ones that have these battles, the ones where they're all just standing around talking, have just not landed and not worked well.
00:31:49
Speaker
And that's not even just because it's adapted from a first person shooter game.
00:31:52
Speaker
That's just all shooting and driving warthogs and, you know, trying to, trying to GTA Jack, you know,
00:32:01
Speaker
Covenant vehicles from them.
00:32:03
Speaker
You know, we didn't really talk much about the tanks that we got.
00:32:05
Speaker
We got a Wraith tank and a Scorpion tank in this, and they look pretty good.
00:32:09
Speaker
I was pretty excited.
00:32:11
Speaker
You know, we haven't gotten a Ghost yet, which was kind of one of my weapons of choice back in the Halo 2 days, but I'm sure that's coming.
00:32:17
Speaker
We've definitely gotten plenty of Warthogs.
00:32:18
Speaker
You know, that's what we are used to from the game and when this series delivers that.
00:32:25
Speaker
I think it's fantastic.
00:32:26
Speaker
I know it can't just be all shooting all the time.
00:32:29
Speaker
They have to have something in there to, to carry a story forward.
00:32:33
Speaker
Um, and, and at times they've done that at times they've done well with that.
00:32:37
Speaker
Um, so yeah, just going with the four.
00:32:41
Speaker
Well, uh, I'm glad that you, uh, got that much enjoyment out of it.
00:32:46
Speaker
That is really cool.
00:32:48
Speaker
Um, we'll be back again for episode five, see where the story takes us, but, um,
00:32:54
Speaker
We'll have a very quick turnaround and we'll be finishing the mummy series and going with tomb of the dragon emperor.
Upcoming Podcast Reviews and Content
00:33:03
Speaker
And I am saving that for tomorrow.
00:33:09
Speaker
I have not rewatched it.
00:33:10
Speaker
That'll be tomorrow because I don't have work.
00:33:13
Speaker
I am going back and I totally forgot until Rob, you text me that on the back of the box art, it does say the best one yet.
00:33:25
Speaker
And your son had a funny response to that.
00:33:29
Speaker
Um, so it wasn't just anybody that had that, um,
00:33:35
Speaker
That quote, it was the late Roger Ebert, easily the most recognizable movie critic name that anybody can think of.
00:33:44
Speaker
There was Siskel and Ebert, and then Gene Siskel passed, and then we had Ebert and Roper.
00:33:48
Speaker
The whole two thumbs up was Siskel and Ebert's trademark.
00:33:52
Speaker
So none other than the late Roger Ebert said that it was the best in the series.
00:33:58
Speaker
And, uh, uh, as, as my son was looking at it, he, um, he asked why anyone would say that about this movie.
00:34:07
Speaker
And, um, he, he doesn't even really know who Roger Ebert is.
00:34:10
Speaker
I don't think he's 11.
00:34:11
Speaker
So it's not likely that he would, he would know.
00:34:13
Speaker
I mean, Ebert, I think died before Wes was even born.
00:34:18
Speaker
Um, so yeah, um, I,
00:34:22
Speaker
That's a that's a bold statement.
00:34:25
Speaker
Again, I'm I'm actually looking forward to it.
00:34:30
Speaker
So I'm like I said, I'm saving it because I'm off tomorrow, but I am looking forward to watching that one, closing out that series and figuring out what's our next one.
00:34:42

00:35:31
Speaker
Yeah, Rob, I will tell you that Brandon is still holding out hope that we are going to get to Resident Evil.
00:35:40
Speaker
He, he, he refuses to watch those unless you are involved.
00:35:46
Speaker
I kind of refuse to watch them just in general.
00:35:52
Speaker
Just, you know, like you gotta be like to, to finish like to, to on purpose, watch a resident evil movie.
00:35:59
Speaker
You gotta just like, there's a certain amount of self loathing that you just have to be like in the mood for.
00:36:08
Speaker
Oh, yeah, that's that is true.
00:36:10
Speaker
But very maybe we will get to them.
00:36:14
Speaker
Maybe we will see.
00:36:15
Speaker
Maybe I can bribe you with a couple of beers and some pizza or something.
00:36:20
Speaker
But yeah, like an entire distillery.
00:36:28
Speaker
I do work at a bar.
00:36:32
Speaker
But all right, well, that'll do it.
00:36:34
Speaker
