Introduction and Success of 'Five Nights at Freddy's'

00:00:00
Speaker
What's going on, everybody?
00:00:02
Speaker
Welcome back to Matt Goes to the Movies.
00:00:04
Speaker
And we are here to talk about the video game adaptation, Five Nights at Freddy's, which released this year simultaneously on Peacock and in theaters.
00:00:19
Speaker
And box office-wise, made a killing, even with it being released on Peacock the same day.
00:00:26
Speaker
Still broke.
00:00:27
Speaker
plenty of box office records, and had a very, very good intake from movie tickets to production budget.
00:00:37
Speaker
So we're going to talk about a movie that is, you know, based on a nine video game overall, you said?
00:00:46
Speaker
Nine or ten, I guess, if you want to count a certain game.
00:00:51
Speaker
You know, video game that has a lot of lore, if you've never actually really looked into these.
00:00:58
Speaker
So just a lot of stuff to actually go through.

Profitability of the Movie

00:01:02
Speaker
So with me is Brandon, and we're going to talk about this because for me, this is just a movie that I wanted to watch, and I'm aware of some of the backstory, but it's really something that I know he was excited to actually see when it first came out because he knows a lot of the history of the backstory.
00:01:24
Speaker
So I'm going to kick it over and let Brandon say a few things.
00:01:28
Speaker
First time in a while, right?
00:01:30
Speaker
Yeah.
00:01:30
Speaker
Yeah, a long while.
00:01:32
Speaker
And it's funny with the budget is that even with all those numbers, they didn't even need that in order to make their money back, right?
00:01:42
Speaker
They, with all the Paramount deal, I mean, Peacock deals and everything, they already made their money back.
00:01:49
Speaker
So that, what, $120 million?
00:01:51
Speaker
$136 million.
00:01:52
Speaker
$136 million is straight profit, really.
00:01:59
Speaker
Yeah, which is, you know, in this day and age, it's realistically what it's all about.
00:02:04
Speaker
They have to, you know, make profit to sit there and really continue to make these movies.
00:02:11
Speaker
And profit this did make.
00:02:15
Speaker
And again, there's a...

Character Relationships and Depth

00:02:19
Speaker
a pretty big gap between a rotten tomato score and the audience score.
00:02:23
Speaker
Um, it's actually currently sitting at 31% on rotten tomatoes, but 87% for the audience score.
00:02:32
Speaker
And I only watched this movie the one time, Brandon, you were able to watch it again at home, but this is a movie that I was actually pleasantly surprised with.
00:02:44
Speaker
Um, I mean, I think, uh,
00:02:48
Speaker
Blumhouse does a very, very good job with their horror movies.
00:02:53
Speaker
Actually, I'm sorry.
00:02:56
Speaker
I'm thinking something completely different there for a second.
00:03:00
Speaker
Universal Pictures and Blumhouse did have a part in this, but there were multiple things.
00:03:08
Speaker
I think they've both done a good job over the recent years with horror releases and
00:03:13
Speaker
You know, this was one that it made me want to see a sequel.
00:03:17
Speaker
The animatronics were, I thought, really incredible.
00:03:21
Speaker
The atmosphere was really good.
00:03:23
Speaker
And I enjoyed the personal story.
00:03:25
Speaker
I enjoyed the relationship between the brother and sister.
00:03:28
Speaker
And it wasn't just... Brother and brother.
00:03:32
Speaker
Yeah.
00:03:35
Speaker
Yeah.
00:03:37
Speaker
Mike and Garrett are.
00:03:38
Speaker
Oh, no.
00:03:39
Speaker
Yeah.
00:03:41
Speaker
So I enjoyed the relationship with a brother and sister on screen.
00:03:46
Speaker
Now, what Brandon's referring to is, yes, there is a brother brother relationship as his brother was taken when he was younger.
00:03:56
Speaker
You know, and how he had to end up taking care of his little sister.
00:03:59
Speaker
I enjoyed all of that.
00:04:01
Speaker
And I thought that was that was really well done.
00:04:05
Speaker
Yeah, that's definitely.
00:04:07
Speaker
Maybe it's because of Megan.
00:04:09
Speaker
I was kind of looking forward to that more.
00:04:12
Speaker
Just the brother and sister relationship.
00:04:14
Speaker
Because of how well Megan did that.
00:04:16
Speaker
Despite us not even thinking that being the case going into that movie.
00:04:21
Speaker
But yeah, the characters are done.
00:04:25
Speaker
For what they are, they're done pretty well.
00:04:27
Speaker
Especially, I was very surprised with Vanessa.
00:04:31
Speaker
And we'll get to that later.
00:04:34
Speaker
But because of just...
00:04:36
Speaker
Who Vanessa is in the games, you kind of don't even expect her to be even in this movie, but she did pretty well.

Animatronics and Strong Storyline

00:04:45
Speaker
You know, I thought everybody, I thought everybody did really well in this.
00:04:52
Speaker
Um...
00:04:54
Speaker
And again, that's one of the things that was surprising to me is how much I connected with the story.
00:05:01
Speaker
Now, again, it was really cool because the animatronics were so well done.
00:05:06
Speaker
I really did.
00:05:07
Speaker
I thought they were very, very well done.
00:05:11
Speaker
But again, there was a good story there.
00:05:13
Speaker
And these characters are what really kind of drew me in.
00:05:19
Speaker
To this.
00:05:19
Speaker
So that's what I was most.
00:05:23
Speaker
You know excited about.
00:05:24
Speaker
To talk about was.
00:05:25
Speaker
The character connections.
00:05:28
Speaker
In this movie but.
00:05:30
Speaker
You know Brandon I will let you.
00:05:31
Speaker
Because again you're.
00:05:33
Speaker
You know much more involved with that.
00:05:37
Speaker
And go from there.
00:05:39
Speaker
So talk more about.
00:05:40
Speaker
The character development that you were just.
00:05:42
Speaker
Talking about.

Matthew Lillard's Impactful Performance

00:05:43
Speaker
Yeah there's one character we're kind of.
00:05:46
Speaker
Leaving out.
00:05:47
Speaker
because you can't talk about him without many spoilers.
00:05:51
Speaker
But he's played by Matthew Lillard, and I don't know if there's a better casting for his character than Matthew Lillard, because it's also... I feel like he just is able to bring what that character is and what he's supposed to be like.
00:06:13
Speaker
I feel like he's the perfect guy...
00:06:16
Speaker
to bring that out of him.
00:06:20
Speaker
Yeah, no, I, I thought Matthew Lillard was actually really good in this movie.
00:06:26
Speaker
He does, you know, he's not the main focus of this movie.
00:06:29
Speaker
Now, certainly his character is a major focus of the overall story driving force, but he's, you know, he's not in this,
00:06:38
Speaker
to the degree of a main character.
00:06:41
Speaker
It's if you know, even this movie does, you know, clearly state what he has done.
00:06:51
Speaker
But there's a lot to this movie too.
00:06:53
Speaker
And I think this is where some of the disconnect has come in terms of the ratings and things like that is if you don't know, because there is a pretty deep lore to this franchise.
00:07:08
Speaker
And I think if you don't really go into that, I think this movie can maybe confuse you a little bit for maybe a general audience.
00:07:16
Speaker
Yeah.
00:07:18
Speaker
Yeah.
00:07:19
Speaker
I always joke about it because if I ever typed out what this series is about, it looks like I could turn it in for a college essay.
00:07:29
Speaker
But even so, I don't think we're getting into the really complicated parts of the story.
00:07:39
Speaker
I think it's going to be smoother than it is.
00:07:44
Speaker
Depending on how they tell it, it could be a lot smoother in the movies than it is a game.
00:07:49
Speaker
Because the games, especially the first three, all jump between periods.
00:07:55
Speaker
Two is a prequel.
00:07:57
Speaker
Three takes place after one, and one is in the middle.
00:08:00
Speaker
And then you've taken four, which takes place before two.
00:08:04
Speaker
You could tell it's already about to get confusing for some people.
00:08:07
Speaker
But you could definitely...
00:08:10
Speaker
I feel like you could do that a lot smoother in a movie format.
00:08:14
Speaker
So I'm kind of interested to see what they do with that later.
00:08:18
Speaker
Yeah, I think, again, this movie did make me want a sequel for sure.
00:08:23
Speaker
I would love to see them continue this.
00:08:26
Speaker
We're getting one.
00:08:27
Speaker
I'm getting more involved with this as we're playing Five Nights at Freddy for the PlayStation VR 2.
00:08:37
Speaker
Second game's coming out in just a couple days now, four days to be exact.
00:08:42
Speaker
So...
00:08:43
Speaker
You know, after watching this movie, it did get me more interested in, you know, just this property as a whole.

Criticism of Supernatural Elements

00:08:51
Speaker
And it's been really cool.
00:08:53
Speaker
I think it's been cool how this has, you know, kind of opened up me into other projects for this title.
00:09:04
Speaker
Yeah, but also, yeah, we're very kind of.
00:09:08
Speaker
said there's going to be a second one coming plus it should be obvious 100 million plus there's no you'd be kind of dumb to just not make a a follow-up to that but yeah no and i i think again just because i
00:09:29
Speaker
the one thing with this movie that I think, you know, I will say didn't resonate with me was the sort of, I know there's a supernatural element to it overall.
00:09:41
Speaker
Um, but you know, the one thing that maybe didn't resonate with me in this movie a little bit was those flashback scenes or maybe not even flashback scenes, however you want hallucinations dreams where he was able to tap into, um,
00:09:58
Speaker
the other children's vision that were taken and their souls and everything else were put into these animatronics.
00:10:06
Speaker
Um, you know, that was, that was a little bit to me.
00:10:11
Speaker
Um, it didn't always translate incredibly well on the screen.
00:10:16
Speaker
Um, and since you saw this a second time, like, how did you feel?
00:10:19
Speaker
Was that a little bit more noticeable the second time?
00:10:21
Speaker
Like, what was your thoughts on a second viewing?
00:10:25
Speaker
Um, yeah.
00:10:26
Speaker
Trying to think about those hallucination scenes.
00:10:31
Speaker
I think... Not the last one, but I think the one before that where I was kind of like... Maybe it's getting a little... Maybe you're seeing it too many times.
00:10:43
Speaker
Because the thing is, this is supposed to be the first game's location and stuff.
00:10:49
Speaker
And stuff that happens in the game's first location.
00:10:55
Speaker
They don't say, they don't directly tell you what's going on with the animatronics.
00:11:00
Speaker
They give you hints.
00:11:02
Speaker
I think more than enough hints to tell you what's going on.
00:11:06
Speaker
It feels more like they're just kind of shoving that like, hey, this is what's going on.
00:11:13
Speaker
Don't be confused with just maybe one too many of those scenes.
00:11:19
Speaker
Yeah, I think that's a good point.
00:11:20
Speaker
Maybe there is just one
00:11:23
Speaker
you know, one too many of those.
00:11:25
Speaker
But again, it didn't deter from the movie.
00:11:28
Speaker
I do like it didn't turn me off to the movie because I did really enjoy this, especially to

Anticipation for a Sequel

00:11:35
Speaker
man.
00:11:35
Speaker
Anytime that,
00:11:38
Speaker
those animatronics are on screen.
00:11:40
Speaker
It is incredibly impressive, but it does set a really good atmosphere.
00:11:44
Speaker
You know, we talked about maybe the same thing as the movie Megan, you know, would this movie benefit a little bit more from an unrated cut?
00:11:54
Speaker
Especially the one scene, you know, especially the break in scene, which as far as I know, there isn't going to be any kind of unrated version.
00:12:03
Speaker
I'd also be curious to know about any kind of deleted scenes.
00:12:06
Speaker
If there's anything,
00:12:08
Speaker
that adds to that, but you're kind of alluding to the fact that you might know if there are some.
00:12:15
Speaker
I don't remember if there's straight up deleted scenes, but I know there's another like version of the script and like the set piece of what goes on in that break in scene.
00:12:28
Speaker
You actually one, see one of the kills, the Bonnie one, but it's also a little bit more graphic, but I, I think it's,
00:12:38
Speaker
Maybe just doing something a little bit more.
00:12:40
Speaker
That's my main criticism on the second watch is I feel like you need to do needed to do more with the animatronics because I feel like at the end, the threat of them is kind of gone near the end.
00:12:54
Speaker
Except for a scene that happens after they go through all the main animatronics.
00:13:02
Speaker
Yeah, I think those are good points.
00:13:04
Speaker
I mean, who wouldn't want to see more of those?
00:13:07
Speaker
Especially, again, considering how impressive they are.
00:13:10
Speaker
A work of art.
00:13:12
Speaker
He's not lying when he says that.
00:13:14
Speaker
Yeah, those were...
00:13:16
Speaker
But those were really, really, really well done.
00:13:20
Speaker
So I could have definitely gone with more from that.
00:13:23
Speaker
But again, you know, I think what they're trying to do is they were trying to lay that foundation.
00:13:31
Speaker
Certainly they have ideas and they had plans for
00:13:34
Speaker
For some other movies, but I do think they did a good job, and this is something I've talked about with movies that are looking to get a sequel.
00:13:41
Speaker
They don't really concentrate on making a good first movie.
00:13:45
Speaker
They just think, you know, a studio thinks like, oh, they'll just want to see the sequel because of the property.
00:13:51
Speaker
I don't feel like that was the case here.
00:13:52
Speaker
I feel like they laid a good foundation to make you want to see more.
00:13:56
Speaker
And plus, for those who know the story of how this movie was made, I feel like they just wanted to get this movie out.
00:14:04
Speaker
in general, because this thing went through eight years of development just because everything basically went wrong.
00:14:13
Speaker
And I know that's definitely a red flag for most films, but this somehow stuck the landing for that.
00:14:20
Speaker
Yeah, no, I mean, usually when you hear about that kind of delay and
00:14:28
Speaker
trouble, usually that's a surefire sign for this to, you know, for it to be really bad.
00:14:34
Speaker
That definitely was not the case here, which was incredible to see.
00:14:41
Speaker
So I was glad that that happened.
00:14:43
Speaker
And, you know, more so too on just knowing how excited you were to see this movie.
00:14:48
Speaker
I was glad it wasn't disappointing.
00:14:51
Speaker
Oh my goodness.
00:14:52
Speaker
I would have been heartbroken if this was like terrible.
00:14:56
Speaker
yeah no that was that was the one thing i was really fearing um was this movie actually being like just just bad like really really bad and like oh man like so disappointing um luckily this that was not the case but um again with you knowing much more of the you know history of this is there anything that you want to follow up on um
00:15:25
Speaker
that the listeners might not know or any insights to this movie?
00:15:29
Speaker
Um, for anyone who hasn't watched it and knows the story of the games, this is definitely an alternate universe.
00:15:39
Speaker
Now, I don't know what they're doing with the main character, Mike's entire deal, because they're kind of weird with it.
00:15:51
Speaker
One thing that I noticed is that they don't use Mike's last name at all near the end of the movie.
00:15:58
Speaker
Notice how they only call him Mike, not Schmidt.
00:16:01
Speaker
So for fans of the games that might be alluding to something, I still like the theory that he is a different, that the Schmitz are a different family from the games.
00:16:12
Speaker
But go into this thinking it's not going to be
00:16:17
Speaker
a one-to-one adaptation.
00:16:19
Speaker
It feels more like the first set of books to me, which some people like and dislike the books.
00:16:29
Speaker
I think some of them are at least okay.
00:16:32
Speaker
The first couple novel trilogies can be rough, but I just think that they, I think they do pretty good considering how some of the books go.
00:16:43
Speaker
Yeah, no.
00:16:44
Speaker
It'll be certainly, again, it'll be interesting to see what direction they're going to go in.
00:16:49
Speaker
But before we get to popcorn time, it looks like you have a final thought before we give our review.
00:16:55
Speaker
We got to talk about Matthew Lillard's character.
00:16:57
Speaker
Okay.
00:16:58
Speaker
Well, you take that away because, again, you're much more versed in that.
00:17:03
Speaker
So, starts off as Steve Raglan, who is a career counselor who...
00:17:09
Speaker
seems to very much know about Freddy's and always, it feels like when he

Significance of William Afton

00:17:17
Speaker
brings it up, he knows a lot about it.
00:17:20
Speaker
Talking about the owner, granted that raises some questions as well.
00:17:25
Speaker
If you know about the games with the owner situation and stuff, but once again, you only get two scenes with them.
00:17:34
Speaker
One of them is actually a phone call.
00:17:36
Speaker
So you barely see them.
00:17:39
Speaker
But you start to get a little bit more of character progression with Vanessa.
00:17:46
Speaker
And then she reveals the truth that she is the daughter of the man who is the reason why this movie is happening, William Afton.
00:17:58
Speaker
Now, I have some opinions on that being the case of Vanessa being his daughter.
00:18:05
Speaker
But nonetheless, I
00:18:08
Speaker
His reintroduction as William Afton is awesome.
00:18:13
Speaker
My favorite part of the movie is that introduction and then all the way to the picture scene.
00:18:21
Speaker
But I think they absolutely nailed this rendition of William considering how, and some fans will be able to agree with me, considering how rough it can be with his characterization.
00:18:39
Speaker
I think a lot of people think the first three games, well, two and three when he's introduced, pretty good.
00:18:48
Speaker
I don't like the scientist stuff with him in the books, but I feel like this movie nailed a good in between of books and games where...
00:18:57
Speaker
In the games, he's not even a name in the first two.
00:19:02
Speaker
He's just this presence that you know bad stuff is going to happen.
00:19:08
Speaker
He's always there.
00:19:09
Speaker
He always comes back.
00:19:11
Speaker
And then in the books, Noticeably the Silver Eyes might be my favorite.
00:19:17
Speaker
Other than this movie, probably my second favorite rendition.
00:19:21
Speaker
I feel like this nails it as well.
00:19:24
Speaker
With the suit, he's this big, powerful thing.
00:19:29
Speaker
He's a tank.
00:19:30
Speaker
He's a horror movie villain.
00:19:32
Speaker
He throws Mike around across the room.
00:19:35
Speaker
But without that mask on, he's a coward.
00:19:40
Speaker
He's trying to sound big in front of all these animatronics.
00:19:46
Speaker
He's just sweating.
00:19:48
Speaker
He's nervous.
00:19:49
Speaker
He can't do anything without the suit.
00:19:53
Speaker
And the thing he kind of relies on the most betrays him in the end.
00:19:58
Speaker
He...
00:19:59
Speaker
breaks down granted i think the scene could be a little bit better but the suit just goes against him and locks him in there and he can't move which same thing like the games he's locked there for a long time yeah i did think he uh i thought he was very well done i enjoyed him a lot
00:20:23
Speaker
I did enjoy towards the end, though, his like defiance because he does say like, I'll come like I always come back as he's getting dragged away.
00:20:32
Speaker
I mean, I'll always take more Matthew Lillard always.
00:20:36
Speaker
So I enjoyed him a lot.
00:20:38
Speaker
And if it's a second and if they're saying the next movie will be more around the second game, which good.
00:20:45
Speaker
Hopefully.
00:20:48
Speaker
I hope they don't bring him back.
00:20:51
Speaker
As like in the suit.
00:20:53
Speaker
I hope he's this flashback as the guy working at Freddy's.
00:20:59
Speaker
Once again, whether they want to make him the owner like he is in the games or co-owner like he is in the games, I don't know.
00:21:07
Speaker
But I wish we just get him more as William, not the Yellow Rabbit.

Then in the third movie, then you could just get the full suit, the full horror element, and all of its glory just like the third game.
00:21:24
Speaker
Yeah, no, I think, again, without knowing everything, I am just excited to see where this will go.

Final Movie Ratings and Opinions

00:21:33
Speaker
But I think that will lead us into popcorn time.
00:21:37
Speaker
And if you're a new listener, popcorn time is where we say five buckets.
00:21:42
Speaker
How many buckets of popcorn out of five would we rate this movie?
00:21:47
Speaker
Now, for me,
00:21:49
Speaker
I would honestly rate this movie four buckets.
00:21:52
Speaker
I really did have a good time with it.
00:21:54
Speaker
Again, atmosphere, characters, designs.
00:21:57
Speaker
I do feel there's some great tension building scenes.
00:22:01
Speaker
And I just enjoyed it.
00:22:02
Speaker
You know, I've said this so many times.
00:22:04
Speaker
I don't need something to be...
00:22:07
Speaker
overly complicated.
00:22:08
Speaker
I don't need it to make me think a ton.
00:22:12
Speaker
Sometimes I just need to have fun.
00:22:14
Speaker
And in that sense, or just enjoy it, just be able to sit there and enjoy what I was watching.
00:22:19
Speaker
And in this case, this movie did that.
00:22:21
Speaker
I enjoyed what I watched.
00:22:22
Speaker
I had a good time with it.
00:22:23
Speaker
So a four for me.
00:22:25
Speaker
Now, what's funny, if we were just doing this on my first viewing, I probably would have given it a four as well, but I think I'm going to give it a three.
00:22:34
Speaker
Overall, still a good movie, but I think on my second watch through, I was able to see a little bit more criticisms towards it than I initially had when first watching it.
00:22:47
Speaker
Well, I'm certainly interested because I was not aware that that was going to happen.
00:22:53
Speaker
So, interesting.
00:22:55
Speaker
Maybe my opinion would change doing a second viewing as well, and I would rate this maybe a little lower.
00:23:00
Speaker
But if you have seen Five Nights at Freddy's, let us know what you think.

00:23:13
Speaker
Go check it out.
00:23:14
Speaker
I don't think you're going to be disappointed, especially if you're a fan of the series.
00:23:18
Speaker
I think you will find something.
00:23:20
Speaker
There are Easter eggs throughout this entire movie.
00:23:22
Speaker
All over.
00:23:23
Speaker
That you will, I'm sure, no doubt spot during your viewing.
00:23:28
Speaker
So that'll do it for our review of Five Nights at Freddy's.
00:23:33
Speaker
