Introduction of Hosts and New Segment
00:00:04
Speaker
Well, hello and welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a friend's rewatch pod. I am one of your three hosts today, Alistair alongside Deanne. Deanne, how are you today? I'm doing awesome, Al.
00:00:18
Speaker
I'm doing great. now And what about our other person? We have a bonus host. Kate is going to be doing bamboozled today, so she is off to the side.
00:00:30
Speaker
I'm so excited for this. I am pumped. It is new format. Don't know if we'll do it once or every week. We haven't decided yet. I've already decided this is going to be great.
00:00:43
Speaker
It's going to be fantastic.
Review of Friends Episode with a Twist
00:00:44
Speaker
We are reviewing the one where Ross and Rachel, you know. yeah But before we jump into the review, as always, but with a different twist, we will jump into Bamboozled.
00:00:55
Speaker
Now, the way it's going to work is... Kate is going to ask 10 questions. She is sitting near me, but I cannot see them, of course. But in the spirit of fairness, I've downloaded a buzzer, and she can see Deanne. So whether my buzzer goes off first or Wilson waves, jumps up and down, she will she is the be-all and end-all. She decides. I decide.
00:01:18
Speaker
ah Yeah, she does. Kate, this is awesome. Wilson, just to make sure, can you hear Kate O'Kate? She's very quiet.
Lighthearted Personal Moments
00:01:30
Speaker
move away from the microphone move Kate towards the microphone. Kate, did you get a haircut? I did, but it's not good right now. Oh, I love it.
00:01:40
Speaker
Okay, well, whatever. She's lying. Her hair looks beautiful. Indeed. Very short and sassy and cute. I love it. yo yeah Can you hear her better Am I better now?
00:01:53
Speaker
Yes. Okay, good. All right. So we will start off. Kate has got 10 questions for us. No, no, not 10 questions. then we can, then like, you can't have a tie. You have to have an absolute winner. Right. Yeah.
00:02:13
Speaker
what I'll keep the score. Okay. Yes. ah Oh, this is awesome. All right. All right. I'm ready. All right. At the very beginning of the show,
00:02:24
Speaker
ah Joey is showing Chandler what he bought and there is a show on the screen. Oh, I know, I know, I know. It's the Dick Van Dyke show.
00:02:35
Speaker
It is. You are correct. I did not. Okay. Now.
Friends Episode Main Plot Discussion
00:02:40
Speaker
Now, I have a quick question about just, I mean, not because I'm ultra competitive or anything like that.
00:02:48
Speaker
Hold on. Pause just one. So this week we are reviewing the one when Ross and Rachel, you know, and this was another one where I could remember the main plot.
00:03:01
Speaker
You know, it's kind of self-explanatory, but I didn't remember kind of what went on behind the scenes. um Yes. It's a good, and it's a good, this I do like this B plot.
00:03:14
Speaker
Yeah, well, yeah, it's it's an important one. It's a really, ah really important. Yeah, we do. Okay.
00:03:24
Speaker
So I'm curious. Okay. There's a B plot and a C plot. Yeah. Yes. Cause for me, yes. Yeah. Oh, that's right. Which one? Which? Yeah. That's my question for you. Because for me, the B plot would be with Richard and then the C plot. Okay.
00:03:42
Speaker
Yes. And yeah, like this is a really big episode. Yeah, there we meet we'll get into this, um of course. We'll meet Richard, and then we do meet the chairs. The chairs are you know kind of the some of the more important pieces of furniture in the show, I think.
00:03:59
Speaker
Okay, yeah. Can I ask you a question? Those chairs turn brown later, right? Right, I was thinking about that. Okay. um Like Rosita, right?
Furniture in Friends and Personal Stories
00:04:11
Speaker
Yeah, Rosita, and then you know there's Stevie the TV, and then Rosita Cita. and That's right, Rosita the Cita. Yes, and they're brown.
00:04:26
Speaker
like Whenever they pull off the top end and all that, they're red or their brown. Yeah, you're absolutely right. So we need to look out for when that change occurs. Yeah. Because obviously these these two black shapedes chairs are obviously very, very black leather.
00:04:42
Speaker
Yes. They're nice. They're very nice indeed. Yeah. um ah Do you have a favorite piece of furniture? that you Do you like a comfy chair in your house that's like your chair?
00:04:53
Speaker
Okay. So whenever i have the very first piece of furniture that I ever purchased, And it is a Chase Lounge or Chase Long or or whatever.
00:05:06
Speaker
There's crazy ways to say those words that I didn't even know. and Right. i always thought it was a Chase Lounge. um But it's a leopard print.
00:05:17
Speaker
And I bought it whenever was still in college. Oh, was I still in college? I don't know. I was working at Foley's. And we got it in the furniture department. And I was like, oh my gosh, that is so cute.
00:05:29
Speaker
Guys, it's so tacky. It's wonderful. I love it. And then um but then it went on sale because nobody wanted to buy it. Right. So I got it like at at the clearance price plus my employee discount.
00:05:46
Speaker
And that that thing has had been through a life and has gone to apartments and my houses and and and here it is and it's like it's still there first sp it's it's not the ah most upstanding piece of furniture but man i love that thing right that that's all that counts i love that it served as my bed whenever i first moved into my first apartment the piece of furniture that i just love
00:06:20
Speaker
That's fantastic. I love that. What about you, Al? You got a chair? You know I don't have a chair. i will So I will say, growing up, we had ah ah shares long or a chaise lounge, but it was a chaise lounge in our house. Oh, okay.
00:06:35
Speaker
And... um No, I don't. we Our living room, we've been in this house for six or seven years, seven or eight years, something like that.
00:06:46
Speaker
We did, Kate and i both had our own chair at one point and then a small couch, but we ended up getting like one of those big sectional couches so we can sit. Yeah, all One, two, three, four, five or It's great.
00:06:57
Speaker
Yeah, it's it's the perfect one for our living room because we can sit like six or seven people and it's the right shape and all of that. It's great. I've got my spot on the couch. Kate has her spot on the couch. I do miss having a good reclining chair.
00:07:10
Speaker
Not going to lie because those things are great for just nodding off in little sleep, little cat nap. Can't really do that on the couch just the way it is.
00:07:21
Speaker
But... um and well I'm trying to think if I have a favorite piece of furniture in the house. I don't think so. But if I ever get a really good chair, that will go to the top of the list.
00:07:32
Speaker
There you go. Okay. yeah Without a doubt. But yeah, Joey, he's very excited. um Yeah, he is. I've got to tell you, so this is, um I think Joey only does this once, but I've adopted this when I'm making my notes for the episode.
00:07:48
Speaker
It's my version of Friends shorthand. I think he only when he talks about Days of Our Lives, there's one time where he calls it Duel.
00:07:58
Speaker
You know he says, oh, yeah, the cast of What's Duel? Days of Our Lives. So now on my notes, I always write down Duel instead of Days of Our Lives as my tribute to Joey.
00:08:08
Speaker
So Joey has joe bought the chairs because Duel have picked up his option. Yes. I'm assuming that means. Which have no idea what that means. I'm guessing it means, I'd say guess.
00:08:21
Speaker
I might have an inkling that they say, okay, you've got four episodes. If we like you, we have the option of giving you 10 more. And so I think that's what is. So they have the option of writing them out or keeping them on as a character, depending on how we how it did. So I think that's it. Maybe somebody can correct us.
00:08:41
Speaker
um But love the fact that a bit like the bracelet, um you know, he's he's just, he keeps giving to Chandler. Yeah. Paying him back. Yeah. I just love love it i love it He's such a good little friend.
00:08:55
Speaker
He is. He's always looking out for his friends. Well, and and always wanting to, you know, you take
Shorthand and Humor in Friends
00:09:04
Speaker
care of me and I appreciate it I see you and and all of that, you know? Yeah, absolutely.
00:09:12
Speaker
um we go We stay in the boys' apartments and Joey and Chandler, who I genuinely... Let's see, your microphone is rumbling. Yeah, it is. I'm sorry. No, you're fine.
00:09:25
Speaker
Okay. You're fine. Am I better now? Yeah, you're absolutely fine. um So Joey and Chandler, yeah, they're watching. I don't think right for the whole episode, they don't get out of the chairs.
00:09:37
Speaker
No, no, they don't. It plays well. yeah um So they play that well. Yeah, they're watching TV and Ross enters and no, sorry, Rachel enters because and she and Ross kiss.
00:09:50
Speaker
He gets a page from them. You know, they're kind of, they're but they're figuring this out. But before that, Phoebe's there and she's talking to them about the, you know, I can't believe that, you know, these cows paid the ultimate sacrifice. that's Yes. yeah And didn well, they were chair shaped cows.
00:10:10
Speaker
Yes. So what are you going to do? What are you going to do? um That's a good, I forgot about that light. I like that one. Yes. Yes. And then that, then whoever, whichever Rachel or or Ross walks in and then they talk about tonight.
00:10:28
Speaker
Right. Yeah, let's see. rachel what Ross is there too with them, but Rachel walks in and then Ross gets a kiss and Ross gets a page from the museum. Some kind of dinosaur emergency, I suppose.
00:10:40
Speaker
was um But um Ross Rachel, you they have the first date, but there's ah there's a slight issue there because Rachel has forgotten she is meant to be a waitress um for Monica for a catering gig.
00:10:55
Speaker
um but let's see, think Phoebe then then steps in, and um that now I did look up that thing she said, and it is like a real shorthand.
00:11:08
Speaker
Like that, as 86 the bacon? It was the Adam and Eve on a raft. Okay, and is that? Adam and Eve on a raft and wreck them. It is...
00:11:19
Speaker
Oh, it's two kinds of eggs or two eggs on toast. And then the Reckham is, I think, like, do you burst the yolk? I've forgotten now, but it is a real thing too. Two eggs on toast.
00:11:31
Speaker
Oh, how funny. Scrambled eggs, two scrambled eggs on toast. That's that's the Reckham part because you whisk them up. I think that's what it is. Because I was like, she just make up nonsense? Or is it?
00:11:42
Speaker
Yeah, I figured it was something because I knew that 86 meant no bacon. Yes. Take that out. Yeah. But I don't know why you would say 86 instead of just no bacon.
00:11:54
Speaker
It's not shorter. it's It's not. It's actually. more so Kate, we'll get Kate in here to discuss the so the syllables of it. It's more syllables. Okay. Okay, and then this also makes me think of The Office whenever Kevin's trying to talk in the shorthand.
00:12:11
Speaker
Yes. Less words and all that. theyre like, but you spent more time explaining just what you were saying. Less words do trick and all of that. Yes. Why use more when less words do trick? we We hadn't watched The Office in a year or two easily.
00:12:30
Speaker
We'd seen it lots of times. But we've just started re-watching it at night when we're getting ready for bed. And men and i was' I was like, I know The Office. and like i could Not that i could take her. I could take her leave watching it again because I feel like we know.
00:12:43
Speaker
But, Matt, we're watching it again. And there's, again, just so many little things that I've forgotten. Well, and it kind of – okay, so doing this pod with you – And going through friends and and all of that, we're rewatching Stranger Things right now to get ready for
00:13:04
Speaker
the new season in November. And, um you know, like you've watched things so many times that like this, it kind of makes me pay attention. to different things as I'm going back and rewatching.
00:13:17
Speaker
And I like it. Yeah. It's a lot of fun to do that. Yeah. Um, we go over to what i we assume is Richard's apartment. We know he has another one later on, but, or is it something else? Do you think?
00:13:31
Speaker
Oh, I was going to say, or James Bond's apartment. Or James, it could be. It could be James Bond. um I like that because, you know, there's this reference to James Bond and then James Bond's tux later on. So I like that.
00:13:45
Speaker
Are you a James Bond movie fan? Like, any feelings? I don't think I've ever seen any, which won't come as any surprise to anyone. um So again, nothing against them, but just...
00:13:58
Speaker
no Yeah, like I've seen some of them, not all of them. and you know it's like Yeah, I've forgotten that this was Richard's first appearance, but obviously the crowd cheer, you know, the audience when he comes out.
00:14:13
Speaker
Of course. As they should. um And I like this first interaction. It feels very wholesome, just the kind of talking about the nodding and the... you know, all of that stuff. I kind of like it. I think we all do a bit of that, you know? Yes, absolutely. yeah And it just kind of, it's so very real, right? Just calling it out and, oh, I see that, you know, because you did this and, right you know, and and that's fine. It's, you know, all the social norms of, of how you approach something like that.
00:14:45
Speaker
Right. But yeah. It's very real, very sweet. Wholesome. Absolutely. Yeah, I like it. That's perfect word.
Social Norms and Relationships
00:14:55
Speaker
Well, let's see. I can't remember. what do they Do you remember what they're cooking or baking or making? I've forgotten.
00:15:00
Speaker
Kebabs. That's right, because there could be a kebab emergency. Exactly. That's right. yes um Yeah, they're making the kebabs. Chandler's ordering pizza back at his apartment but has it delivered across the hall even though Monica is obviously at Richard's and Rachel and Ross are on a date Yes, exactly.
00:15:25
Speaker
But I think we we do see later on, they've lost all track of time. They don't know what day it is. It's been 14 hours. Yes. They simply do not know what time of day or day it is, I don't think.
00:15:39
Speaker
um I like that you know they cancel the sodas to avoid having to go to the bathroom. um yeah like It's become a challenge at this point, it seems. and who Yes, just hanging out with the two-dimensional people. That's right. The three-dimensional.
00:15:58
Speaker
One of my favorite lines that I don't fully understand, which we'll get to, is the next line after that um from Phoebe, what she sees on the television. but I'm excited to ask you about that.
00:16:09
Speaker
I know. You know. See, I knew you would. I knew you would, and I don't. So I'm excited for it to hear the explanation. We're back over in Richard's apartment, Monica and Richard. They're hanging out.
00:16:21
Speaker
the they're I guess they're flirting, but in a very, again, a wholesome way. There's nothing... yeah It's not one-sided. It's not creepy. It's not this old guy going after a young guy. It feels very nice. Yes.
00:16:35
Speaker
And we find out that Monica is 27 at this point, I think. Yes. And then Richard mentions later on that he's 21 years older, I think.
00:16:46
Speaker
Yes. Yes. But yeah, she is getting smitten. And I like smitten kitten. I've always liked that phrase. I don't know if it i don't if it comes from friends or if it's something else, but smitten kitten, we've we've used that with our kids at various points and and stages in life.
00:17:03
Speaker
well But good old Phoebe. Phoebe kind of calls out Monica for like, yeah, you're you're you're getting smitten. You are the smitten kitten. um and it's it's It's hard in my head not to go too far ahead with the Monica and Richard storyline, but they're just so nice.
00:17:23
Speaker
why i i like them. I like them. see All the way to... yeah No, go ahead. go ahead Okay. And where I keep getting caught up is because I i ah very much can think about whenever her parents find out And her mom is talking about how he's got the tart in the city.
00:17:47
Speaker
and oh yes. Yes, yes, yes. But that's what I kept thinking about during this whole exchange. I'm like, this is actually really nice. Really nice.
00:17:59
Speaker
You know? Yeah. And it they've got good chemistry. And then I'm like, Ross says something later about, you know, ah he'll be like a whatever for – retirees but then I'm thinking 48 who gets to retire when they're 48 yeah I'm a few years from that but not many and I won't be retiring at 48 exactly but um yeah it's and it kind of makes me laugh though whenever she's whenever Phoebe's telling her you're a smitten kitten and all of that and then she says he's a grown up
00:18:41
Speaker
Right. that my She's almost 30. Like she's 27. You're a full grownup. But I don't know. it's It's funny though.
00:18:53
Speaker
It's funny how people, I'm sure that somebody again will have said this much more eloquently. When somebody has like a position in your life, like your elementary school teacher, they're always the teacher.
Hierarchy and Education Structures
00:19:03
Speaker
They're always up in that hierarchy. Even if you you're 40 and they're 55 and you bump into each other, that's still Mr. or Mrs. Whoever.
00:19:13
Speaker
Okay. Here's ah here's a good example. Okay. um Whenever I very first started teaching, you know i was 22 because I graduated, I started teaching. So I was 22 and I taught middle school.
00:19:28
Speaker
And so um now i'm I'm working at an elementary school. well One of my students that I have whenever I very first started teaching has children that go to my school.
00:19:43
Speaker
and right And it's like we're probably eight years apart. My kids my kids are just a couple of years older than his kids.
00:19:54
Speaker
and But I am Miss Walsh. You know what I mean? There's that certain thing that even 20 years later is still there.
00:20:05
Speaker
And so that makes it, yeah. See, now that I'm thinking about that, I'm like, ew, this is kind of gross. Right, it's weird to think about. um So I've gone through a weird transition to where I'm now a colleague of people who taught me my undergraduate and master's degree.
00:20:26
Speaker
And we actually had a discussion because we all went to a conference together as colleagues in January. And there was an actual discussion of, look, you've always called us Dr. This and Dr. That.
00:20:37
Speaker
We're colleagues now, the hierarchy Isn't they, you know, we're all level. You need to call us by our first names now. um You know, and it was an actual, and it's difficult. It's difficult to do. Yeah.
00:20:52
Speaker
Well, and that's weird too. But then, i don't know. Now I'm thinking about if somebody's known you since you were a child and they were an adult when you were a child.
00:21:06
Speaker
Right. Yeah, this is weird. Yeah, it's fun it's it's funny to shift. Yeah, yeah. yes Yeah, because that... yeah but All right.
00:21:23
Speaker
So let's think. Yeah, so they've met, and it's... But it just, it does, on paper, it sounds a bit oogie, but it feels wholesome to me. Yeah. I like the sound of it. I like the feel of it.
00:21:35
Speaker
Yes, that's the thing. And so now I'm going to take myself out of reality and back into the Friends universe. Yes. because Because now I'm starting to feel itchy. Yes, no back back it back in the world of Friends, absolutely.
00:21:49
Speaker
um Now, let's see. we We're going to the girl's apartment. um Ross and Rachel have come back from the movie.
00:22:01
Speaker
i guess the movie had subtitles. Wait. No. No, but jumped ahead. Or you may again, you may have... Oh, wait, wait, wait. no, no, no. I'm sorry. I i skipped a whole scene in my thing because whenever he like opens up, that he's like, help!
00:22:17
Speaker
so but you know they're we're They're picking teams to pick my prescription. And then, that's right, there were subtitles in the glasses. So never mind. I had skipped ahead.
00:22:28
Speaker
i apologize. You're fine. I tell you I'm going to pause for just two seconds.
00:22:35
Speaker
All right, sorry, we had a small technical difficulty, but we are back. Ross and Rachel, they have come back from a movie that has subtitles. um Rachel reveals that she wears glasses. We don't ever see her wearing glasses, right?
00:22:49
Speaker
Never. Never. never Yeah. I don't believe it. That was weird. Yeah, that was ah an odd thing, and that would mean that she was, you know, she needed something to see that far away. I don't know.
00:23:04
Speaker
It's not like it's readers or something. No, no, it would you're exactly right. She would need glasses that make you see far away, which whenever she's driving the car, she does not wear. and That's a good point. It's personal experience that if you can't see far away and you have to wear the glasses.
00:23:23
Speaker
Exactly. Yeah. So I don't know if maybe that was something they just kind of threw in and they thought that that Maybe they would hang on to that. I don't know.
00:23:35
Speaker
Yeah. We found a whatever. That's right. A little, not an Easter but yes, yes st see We liked those. Now, it got me thinking. Now we get into this weird bit where they where Rachel can't stop giggling.
00:23:50
Speaker
When was the last time you laughed so much that you cried? Whoa. Yeah. Not that she laughs that much, but it this reminded me of the last time laughed so much I cried. Go ahead and just tell us that story because I don't think because I don't know.
00:24:07
Speaker
So this is truly one of those stories that's not very funny and you had to be there. um You know our good mutual friend, Lannabelle. Yes!
00:24:18
Speaker
And goodness land, it can make you laugh. One of the funniest people on the planet. Well, we went to Europe with them um one summer recently, a couple of years Well, last year?
00:24:30
Speaker
Two years ago. Yeah, a year a year and a bit ago is when we went. And we were in Belgium and... It's not funny at all, right? But we went to an ice cream place. We'd all had we'd had dinner.
00:24:43
Speaker
I don't drink. She'd had one or two. And we went to an ice cream place. And Lana got her ice cream. and But she didn't get a spoon for whatever reason.
00:24:54
Speaker
So she asked the lady behind the counter for a little shovel. And then the lady behind the counter, who is Belgium, but everyone in Belgium speaks English, corrected Lana's English and said, actually, it's called a spoon.
00:25:08
Speaker
Assuming that latin is the English was Lana's second language. And for some reason, that just got me. I think it was the kind of sarcastic, um it's not a shovel, it's a spoon.
00:25:22
Speaker
just I don't know why it got me the way it got me but it was just Lana asking for a shovel and being corrected and told to get in her lane by this ice cream lady in Belgium for some reason i mean for 10 or 15 minutes I could barely breathe I don't know why and you know Lana it's one of those things maybe you have to know Lana too can imagine her face yeah ah but well thank you Yeah. Thank you for helping me with English. Right. With my first... And I don't know if Lana speaks any ah other...
00:26:04
Speaker
ah languages or not, but thank you for helping me with my one and only language. Right. She does not, and evidently English is questionable at this point. yeah She asked for the shovel.
00:26:18
Speaker
Oh, it's just something. I think it was just the whole situation, but it just, that was the last time I remember like wiping a tear away from laughing. Yes. Do you have any memories like that?
00:26:30
Speaker
I do not. I don't. Very specific one like that. There was something, you know, before school started. And I get like that, ah like giggly if I'm nervous.
00:26:43
Speaker
Right. Right. And so something will kind of strike me funny and then I'll just kind of lose it. ah Right. But before school started was probably the last time that I laughed that hard.
00:26:58
Speaker
And I couldn't even tell you what it was about, but I know I was sitting in the new principal's office and like we had a couple of other staff members or, you know, and our whole office staff this year with the exception of me and then the secretary are new.
00:27:16
Speaker
And so, you know, and it's just a lot of positive energy and some random joke or something will set me off. That's that's it Yeah, it's got to be the right situation. It's not cute, funny story like that at all.
00:27:31
Speaker
it's ah It's a core memory for me now. And that was just one of the highlights of that trip. One of the many. um Yeah, Ross and Rachel start kissing and she i guess it's just a nervous thing. We see this again later on in the series when she's kissing somebody.
00:27:48
Speaker
ah This happens with Joey, but a different reaction. um But I think they both, I assume they both sort of stem from nervousness. Oh, yeah. 100%. And whenever, you know, a girl's mind, you know, is always thinking about at least three things all at once.
00:28:09
Speaker
Right. She's like in the moment kissing him. But then at the same time, she's thinking, oh my gosh, Monica's older, you know, and going through all that. And then he touched her butt and it was it's just all.
00:28:21
Speaker
just Yeah. And then you giggle. Now, I'm curious if this is in the DVD version. I'm guessing it is. Ross and Rachel's dialogue continues while they show shots of Manhattan. ah Yes! Struck me as... Grab it! Yes, that's right.
00:28:40
Speaker
And it was like that. it felt very 90s to me, that kind of commentary over the scene. but I don't know if it is or not. I think it's the only time we see it. Yeah. Yeah. I think so. You know, where they yeah they're talking over it's just these random sky shots.
00:28:57
Speaker
um But suddenly Joey has a Cheeto on his face back in the boy's apartment. um and We're over there and it's just, it's right there on his cheek.
00:29:08
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Okay. And then there, all this stuff about the miracle wax.
00:29:15
Speaker
Oh, on the car. Yeah. Yes. And that kind of goes in there. And I remember those commercials. They would have like a full infomercial, like on TV about Miracle Whack.
00:29:28
Speaker
Right. and Yeah. It's so funny to me. Yeah. I love that. Like the car's on fire, but the expensive paint job is untouched or whatever it is. because of Miracle Whack.
00:29:41
Speaker
And then Ross later is like, you know, but how is that laser? Right. Not cutting through the page. And it's just some really funny lines.
00:29:52
Speaker
What was the guy's name? i know he's passed he passed away years ago, but Billy Mays, right? Yeah, Billy Mays. That was the guy. here i remember him vaguely. That was not long after. He did lot of the infomercials and things. Yeah, he was the guy. was excited all the time.
00:30:09
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, he was... but he Ross enters and he's looking for advice um you know about what what what to do when a girl starts giggling.
00:30:21
Speaker
um But she Rachel enters and they kind of talk in the hallway um and as they get over this pretty quickly. A good thing.
00:30:32
Speaker
um you know She's going to make it up to him that night. Yeah. And they kind of have a little romantic discussion until it's interrupted by, i assume Chandler hurling the shoe at the door. Yes.
00:30:47
Speaker
Yes. It's just fantastic. um Let's see. And was it, yeah, once, what does he want? Oh, some beer. That's right.
00:30:58
Speaker
Yeah. A couple of beers. couple of beers. yeah Get us a couple of beers. Oh, and it made me a laugh whenever they were there by the kitchen and, Could you speak up whenever you lower your voice? That's right. It makes it really hard for us to hear.
00:31:13
Speaker
That's right. And um it's some, I can't remember quite where, but scribbled this down. i think it was, it must've been when Ross was just talking to Joey and Chandler and he's like, I've wanted this since ninth grade typing, which kind of tells us when they first met each other.
Personal Milestones and Family
00:31:30
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. In this typing class in ninth grade. Okay. Which is weird because they weren't in the same grade. And for me, we did not have middle. Yeah, that's right.
00:31:42
Speaker
but So I'm wondering like what school they went to where seventh or eighth graders and ninth graders would be in the same typing class. Maybe junior high. Maybe they're sectioned off like a junior high.
00:31:55
Speaker
Like seventh, eighth, ninth, and then, you know, I don't know. Yeah, Kate went to school up there. I'll ask her to see if I wonder how they're divided up. Yeah, well, even down here, because, like Gainesville, they they have a bunch of different, like, they have, like, early childhood, and then they have, like, primary and intermediate and junior high, or I don't know.
00:32:22
Speaker
But they have a bunch, and it's, like, every two or three years. Yeah, and I suppose it just depends on the numbers of kids and things in each. Yeah, I don't know.
00:32:33
Speaker
It's interesting, though. Yeah. um but Let's see. we We go back over to Richard's office. Do you recognize this set?
00:32:44
Speaker
No. it's ah Is it the dentist's office? The only thing that's different, I looked up pictures, is the chair. Okay. And the optometry equipment. but the rest We see the kind of the rest of the room. It's the same set.
00:32:59
Speaker
Wow. Okay. yeah that That makes sense. yeah ah See, I didn't notice the color of the wall. It's pretty dark.
00:33:11
Speaker
It's pretty dark in there. And again, this kind of, not tension. what's the one Well, I suppose it good tension. No, it it is tension is. It's building between them.
00:33:23
Speaker
um Richard obviously wants her to stay for a second longer and gives her like a fistful of free eye drops. Well, and I think ah Yeah, and he wanted to do something.
00:33:37
Speaker
That is just so awkward, but sweet. Yeah, it's nice seeing that sort professional, he's debonair, he's all these things, and see him kind of fumble like the rest of us. Yeah, he's he's just he's human he's human like the rest of us.
00:33:52
Speaker
you know Yeah, it's kind of fantastic. And then they they start kissing right there in there in the office. And those drops just fall. They're just all over the floor.
00:34:05
Speaker
Very, very sort of TV romance, like where they sweep things off the table. our Phoebe in later seasons. um and yeah ah With ah Russia guy.
00:34:20
Speaker
With the Russia guy. Yes. Yeah, that's it. That's right. so We've already had that. David. David, of course we have. yet That was in the past. yes i'm sweet Yeah, good old David. Don't worry, we'll see him again. Don't we worry, Al. That's right, he's going to be back.
00:34:37
Speaker
He's going to be back. um Phoebe is trying to convince the boys, as you said, to spend time with the three-dimensional people. um And then Xanadu.
00:34:48
Speaker
So Xanadu is one of those words I know. i don't know if it's TV show, a movie, a song. i don't I thought it was a song. It is a song, but it is's also a musical starring Olivia Newton-John from Greece.
00:35:07
Speaker
Now, have I seen it? No, but have I heard the song? Yes. There's like this theme song, like the main song from Xanadu. um But then it's it's a musical. it's a full-blown musical from like 1980. In my head, I think I know the words to the song are Waterloo by ABBA.
00:35:29
Speaker
And I think I replaced that in my head with Xanadu, even though the song is Waterloo. So I perhaps don't know the song. I get those two mixed up. Okay.
00:35:41
Speaker
So the... um the so are The musical, it's a fantasy. It's a fantasy musical. It's pretty weird. It didn't do great at all.
00:35:53
Speaker
It's got 33 and ah ra Rotten Tomatoes and and five stars from IMDb. It's not great. but It starred Olivia Newton-John and it was 1980. was about...
00:36:08
Speaker
and just you know and if its about
00:36:15
Speaker
and Like a love story, but it was fantasy and just kind of, a I don't know. But right it's right then whenever Olivia Newton-John was the big deal.
00:36:29
Speaker
All right. We'll keep that, keep an eye on that. Ross and Rachel come in to say goodnight because again they're about to head out for the evening on their date. um And then Monica comes in and reveals she is also going on a date.
00:36:44
Speaker
um And I do like the interaction with Ross. like that it's David Schwimmer does a great job here with pretending not to know and then reveal you know he figures out who dr but or who's Richard Burke. Dr. Burke?
00:36:59
Speaker
It's like a brother to dad. um it's It's so well done. um and then Rachel, and that's whenever it starts to get icky, right?
00:37:11
Speaker
Yes. like I got kissed by him once. I fell down on my bike when I was seven. Yeah, it starts to get a touch. Even though it's like on its it's all wholesome, it starts to feel icky.
00:37:24
Speaker
It starts to feel icky at this point. We're not going to think about it too much. No, because we like we like Richard. Richard's a good guy. Who was it? One of our very first episodes, one of our friends posted about how they like to keep some sort of Distance whenever we got into the whole thing about how Susan, are not Susan, Carol is manipulative and all of that.
00:37:54
Speaker
somebody Somebody wrote in, yeah I think it was some b listener mail we had. it was, and they said the most beautiful little statement, and so and i want to I want to go to that.
00:38:06
Speaker
like Yes. I'm not going think about it too much. Nope, we're in our lovely friend's universe. um Ross gets a page again and has to go to the museum, so he and Rachel head off there.
00:38:18
Speaker
um And they're in the museum, and I'll have some questions. Speaking of icky things coming up, we'll we'll be discussing this in the museum. but um Ross is having to put some sort of display together, and there's the wrong things and the wrong display.
00:38:33
Speaker
ah Very funny. They didn't tools, and they had a play pot. That's right. Might as well give him a microwave. Right. No way to plug it in. um That's right. And he apologizes to Rachel for taking so long.
00:38:47
Speaker
I forgot the name of the restaurant they were going to, and I meant to write it down in case Kate asked. Oh, boo. And it starts with an S. Yeah, Soriano's? Soriano's. so or sur Maybe Sargantino's. Maybe Sariano's.
00:39:05
Speaker
This might be a good... You go back and look. This might be a good place just to mention we are recording Bamboozled after this episode, but then i'm gonna we're going to put it in at the beginning as normal. But if we... if we get asked about these things in bamboozled and we don't know them. That's why, because we've got very special bamboozled, um, this week, but it will be recorded later.
00:39:29
Speaker
Um, yes. So they're in the museum. Ross yells for this guy, Carl. He's getting frustrated. Um, let's see. And the scene is quite short. We ended up right back in the girls apartment where Monica and Richard are sitting. Um,
00:39:45
Speaker
are sitting, reminiscing, and I've got a ah personal connection to this one because, um you know they're sitting there and he's looking through the pictures and Monica realizes he's a granddad, which, hold on, let's see if I can do this.
00:40:00
Speaker
Watch your ears, this might get loud.
00:40:08
Speaker
Kate and I became grandparents this week. so Yeah, you all did! we just brought down there. It's just um Our daughter Macy and her husband Jackson welcomed Linny into the world on Saturday night, last Saturday night, so just over a week ago.
00:40:25
Speaker
and There was a few scary moments, a bit touch and go for about 24 hours, but they are happy, healthy, back home. And I just say so literally, as we are talking, just got sent a new picture of this precious...
00:40:39
Speaker
Angel, that is. she's just so beautiful. She's got the hair and the cheeks. It's great because um all of like the kids, um like my daughters, buth blah, blah, blah, everyone had blonde hair.
00:40:56
Speaker
Everyone on Jackson's side of the family, Macy's husband Jackson, had blonde or red hair, I think. And she came out with dark hair, which is Kate's color.
00:41:07
Speaker
And, you know, it's Macy's my daughter. kate ah Macy is Kate's stepdaughter. So I only say that because there's no biological thing there. But she's come out with Kate's hair, which Kate is very proud of, which is kind of of fantastic.
00:41:21
Speaker
Yes. Oh, my gosh. But that is a beautiful baby. And I am so excited for Lolly and Pops.
00:41:31
Speaker
Lolly and Pops. And sweet Macy. all we So i've I've seen her, of course. i went up last week. But Kate and i are going to go up together in a couple of weeks.
00:41:42
Speaker
And I'm going to buy a Huggsy to give to her. Yes, she needs a hugsy. does need a hugsy. She needs a hugsy. So there will be a Purple Door Podcast hugsy coming with us to Kansas when we go up there. But, yeah, they're looking, you know, the again, Monica and Richard, it's ah it's a wholesome moment looking through these pictures.
00:42:04
Speaker
And they but I think it both kind of dawns on the what what they're doing. And maybe it is a little... I can take inappropriate. They're both adults. bit's in it Is it icky?
00:42:16
Speaker
She was talking about graduation and being there with his daughter whenever she was young. I mean, emotional. yeah That's right. yeah and it's like ah you know She's realizing that he's a grandpa and she wants kids and a family and Yeah. And what on earth? I'm your daughter's age. like Right.
00:42:45
Speaker
Right. yeah I think at that point, you've got to realize that this is a this is weird. if weird whatever that I'm not quite sure what the good adjective is, but it's it's there's something there that's a bit off. We'll say difficult.
00:42:58
Speaker
Difficult. I like difficult. yeah because ah Yeah, I can see both sides of the coin here. Sorrento's. Or Sorrentino's.
00:43:09
Speaker
I wrote it down. Sorrentino's. Nice. Sorrentino's. Sorrentino's. um Richard and Monica, they're not going to see each other anymore, but then they start kissing again.
00:43:20
Speaker
um yeah. And then the pizza delivery came. That's right. I'm going to kill those guys. I wrote it down next. That's so funny. yet It was in this scene, obviously, not the previous scene. Sorrentino's is where they were supposed to eat.
00:43:33
Speaker
But Ross takes her upstairs to this very odd-looking planetarium. that doesn't Those don't look like stars to me at all. No. No. What's that like this is that? This is a ah fancy museum in Manhattan.
00:43:48
Speaker
and get Get some decent stars. Okay, so... Here's what I remember, because that was exactly my thought, watching that.
00:44:00
Speaker
And we're going, what on earth? Like, what a crappy planetarium. Right. But I remember watching this back whenever it was very first on.
00:44:11
Speaker
And I don't remember thinking, what a crappy planetarium. So is it possible that planetariums have just become so... much more advanced than what they used to be.
00:44:25
Speaker
the That's a good point. yeah Planetarium snobs now. That's a very good point. That could be it I don't know, but I, that was the one thing that like stood out to me was how, like whatever the, the stars are like coming and they're just, yeah they're just blobs. Um,
00:44:45
Speaker
and and That was what I wonder. I was like, I wonder if that's not what planetarians look like in the 90s. And they're just so much better now. Might be. I'm a snob. Something that i hope is better is the trauma-inducing, booming voice that comes on.
Suspension of Disbelief in Friends
00:45:01
Speaker
If you're like seven years old on a field trip and that voice comes on, these kids would be in tears, right? yeah Millions of years ago, whatever it is.
00:45:12
Speaker
um And then we get to your man here, where Ross hits the button. And this, I believe, is Chris Isaac, right? That is And did you recognize the song?
00:45:23
Speaker
You know, I did, but only from, but I know from this episode and then realized that that sounds like him singing, know, in the previous. i mean, I know from this.
00:45:35
Speaker
Wow. See, and that song, like, golly. Okay. Yeah. I feel like that song is like an iconic the iconic Chris Isaac song. Right. Yeah. I associate with this, this episode.
00:45:51
Speaker
Um, we're going to delve into some, some, you know, some, some muddy tricky waters here with the jokes. Um, because Roger and Rachel, the, the rollover on the, uh, the, the juice.
00:46:05
Speaker
Yes. Yes. We'll kind of gloss over it a little bit. A Crest joke. Um, But this is the bit that gets me. So we let's just say there there's some activities, amorous activities, kicking off in the upstairs in the theater.
00:46:24
Speaker
Somehow they wake up back in the display, which I'm assuming is like downstairs. or we I mean, it's at least outside the planetarium. Right. What happened there Why did so many questions, but the biggest one is how in the world is Ross still employed?
00:46:43
Speaker
ah Yeah, that that's a great, great question. yeah Great question. All of that. And then especially what we know about um where she was thinking like while they were just kissing,
00:47:02
Speaker
Right. yeah i like yeah Really? Come on, guys. Yeah. I don't know. Yeah, just there's no way in the world Ross keeps his job after that.
00:47:16
Speaker
But again, it's that suspension of something. God. It's the suspension of reality. Yes, but I have that exact same thought. like How did y'all end up here Yeah. From there.
00:47:34
Speaker
And where are your clothes? Right. what And why are these people there? And why did nobody walk through the museum before they brought in the field trip?
00:47:48
Speaker
group like Lots of questions. Lots of questions. Yes. and And how does he still have a job? Right. How are they? Yeah. I mean, it was for the gag, but still.
00:48:00
Speaker
Come on, guys. It's still. It's verging on, I'm not saying it is criminal behavior, but I think it's a decent exposure. Right. It is, actually. Yeah, come think of it. It really is. It's crazy, but yeah.
00:48:15
Speaker
Yeah, I could see that. um We end up, the final scene back in the boys' apartment with Beavis and Butthead. And they're just laughing.
00:48:27
Speaker
And it's like, yeah. Yeah. That tracks. it'sa It was funny. And then, yeah, the fire alarm. I think the only time we ever hear or see of a fire alarm going off.
00:48:41
Speaker
And, yeah, Channel, what's he doing? It just feels ground. Feels the ground. That's going to be fine. we got time. Like they are not getting out of these chairs for anything, which I kind of, I kind of love.
00:48:55
Speaker
um So it's an exciting episode because we can, we have the start or the next phase of Ross and Rachel. We have the start of the Richard and Monica story. and We have Joey, his option being picked up. So he's now making good money, which is a, is an important theme for the rest of this season because things start happening next week. Next week. Yeah. Next week.
00:49:18
Speaker
um but Let's start thinking about, let's see, ive Gunther Central Park. Where did you land on this one? Chandler. Okay. He was good, solid, like, good, solid, one-liners, ah hilarious from the beginning to the end.
00:49:38
Speaker
He never got up out of that chair once he sat down and he was still hilarious. yeah and And then what I loved, is that him and Joey, you know, he comes in, Joey brings him in, and he's just like, all right, like, I'm going with this.
00:49:56
Speaker
Like, here we are. And then sticks with it the whole time. And at one point we know whenever they're like, how was your date? That was 14 hours ago. Like, you know, they're just sticking to it together.
00:50:10
Speaker
And so Chandler wins. I like it. That's a good, good choice. i like it. I found this one, this week was really tough, not because I felt there was lots of standouts, but there was just lots of good characters.
00:50:26
Speaker
Yeah. So I really struggled with this one. And then I kind of made my choice. And then I started second guessing because it felt a bit predictable. But I was like, no, what i know I like this character in this episode.
00:50:39
Speaker
so And this was actually nothing to do with the fact that Linny is now in the universe. But in honor of Linny, I am picking Richard. Because I'm and new granddad and he was he's the grandpa in the episode.
00:50:54
Speaker
But I actually really like him. I think he's a really good guy. I feel like he's in this upper class, you know, doctors, all the doctors around got lots of money. But yet he's just a grounded guy.
00:51:08
Speaker
And we see that from the very beginning. He's not hoity-toity or, you know, a snob. like ah I think he knows his friends are and he's not really like that.
00:51:19
Speaker
um I like the way, even though it gets a bit icky, as we discussed, it gets a bit difficult. um I just like the guy. I just, I just like him. And he, you know, he throws in a good kind of granddad joke about who needs glasses when he goes out, you know, so he's embracing this grandfather thing like I am.
00:51:39
Speaker
So Richard, it is for me. love that. I love that. Now it is a, Let's see. Let's do this too it a little different this week. It is your son's birthday today. It is. When's his actual birthday? His birthday was on Friday. officially have a preteen. My baby is a preteen.
Closing and Trivia Night Announcement
00:52:02
Speaker
yeah Your baby's a preteen. my gosh. Well, we're sitting around. We have hats on and little streamers, and we're going to have mini cupcakes today. How many mini cupcakes would have? Oh, that's You know in honor of George, how many mini cupcakes would we have for this episode?
00:52:20
Speaker
I'm going to have seven mini cupcakes and one, like, with no icing. There we go. That qualifies as the half. Yeah.
00:52:31
Speaker
Yep. I like it. i'm I'm coming in just a hair and lower. I'm coming in at a solid seven, which is funny because that feels bad, but seven out of 10. Like, it's just, it's a good episode, but it's not nothing about it was outstanding for me.
00:52:46
Speaker
I think for me, at least it's a groundwork episode. Like said, Richard, Joey, um, yeah, Richard and Monica, Joey's thing, and then Ross and Rachel. So it's not really about big moments for me.
00:52:59
Speaker
Um, Yeah, just a fine episode.
00:53:04
Speaker
Very good. All right. So next week, the one with Joe, we are flying through season two. Yeah, we are. yeah I think over half, yeah, we are well over halfway now. Okay.
