Introduction and Time Constraints

Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome everybody, it is Sunday the 31st of August, this last day of summer feels like, but we are coming to you with a full reaction to all the weekend games, bar one, which we'll come to.
00:00:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
um you My name is Ken Davis, I'm joined by the legendary Nick Britton, legendary particularly because it's a Sunday evening and he's cooked for dinner, so we've got to make sure that this finishes within half an hour, but we that should be enough to get everything through or the turkey's going to burn or the chicken's going to burn or whatever's going to burn Hello, Nick. are you doing?
00:00:44
Nick Britten
I'm very well. I'm hungry. I'm hungry now you're mentioning dinner.
00:00:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:00:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've had my tea. I've had my tea.
00:00:50
Nick Britten
has been some good football this weekend, Kent. There's been some good football. um Some interesting football, that's for sure. So we we'll have a good rattle. We'll have a good rattle through the weekend's game, shall we
00:00:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's been a mixed bag. I thought our predictions looked pretty safe when when we made them yesterday morning. They don't look that safe now. There's been some real upsets over the course of

Liverpool vs Arsenal Analysis

00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
the weekend. But let's let's start with the game that's just finished, which is the Liverpool-Arsenal game.
00:01:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah I was listening to it. I didn't watch it. i was listening to the game. It sounded like the two teams were just kind nullifying themselves. It sounded like a very evil even game. They're slobby-shy.
00:01:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
turns up and smashes one in from the free kick. So what was your take game?
00:01:30
Nick Britten
I thought that Arsenal came for a nil-nil.
00:01:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:01:33
Nick Britten
And as a result, the game suffered for a little bit. They didn't want they didn't come to win this game, Arsenal.
00:01:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:01:37
Nick Britten
like They came to get a point out of it. And they were quite unambitious. They played with a very low block. They invited Liverpool to try and break them down. and And then they just tried to play on the break, mostly through Madweke on the right-hand side.
00:01:53
Nick Britten
Martinez didn't really, sorry, Martinelli, but apologies. Martinelli didn't really get the game. Slovislai had him pretty much in his pocket. Slovislai had a great game, by the way. We were starting off to the Newcastle game.
00:02:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it played well.
00:02:02
Nick Britten
He had a great game. We'll come on to his goal in just a moment. But on the whole, um ah I'm afraid Arsenal have paid the price for being way too unambitious. They didn't ever really want to take this game by the scruff of the neck and go on and win it and take the initiative.
00:02:18
Nick Britten
Most of it was Liverpool with the ball, pushing and pressing and teasing and probing and to see if they could find a way through. And then by the time they get their way through with eight eight minutes or so to go it's too late.
00:02:30
Nick Britten
Arsenal then chuck the kitchen sink at it. But Liverpool stand firm and Arsenal keep doing this. They've got history of doing this. They go to these big games, they go to these big grounds and they just don't really look like they believe they can go and win.
00:02:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's interesting that they don't really look like champions. Just looking at the three games so far, the Man United win, sounds like they were trying to replicate the Man United win. that was That was a very lacklustre performance, but they walked away with three points.
00:02:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
They then go and smash Leeds at home, and then they turn up in Liverpool and try a very similar strategy, I think, in relation to the Liverpool game. Didn't really come out of the blocks, didn't really look like they were they were pushing for the victory, but...
00:03:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know You never know. with it Liverpool are vulnerable. we were saying this yesterday. i bet they were working on the basis of we'll get a set piece, we'll put them under pressure and we'll scab a goal.
00:03:23
Nick Britten
They had a few corners and Liverpool dealt expertly with them. they they were The last few minutes was a bit frenetic as they were... I mean, look, Arsenal had 11 shots. Only one on target had 11 shots. that was Most of those were in the last few minutes, it felt like.
00:03:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:38
Nick Britten
Liverpool, what, three shots on target from nine... It just felt like Liverpool wanted to win the game more than Arsenal and did. But we ought to talk about the goal because it was something very, very special.

Sensational Free Kick by Liverpool

00:03:50
Nick Britten
I don't think you're going to see a better free kick than that all season. I'll nail my colours to the mast on this straight away.
00:03:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:55
Nick Britten
It was absolutely sensational. You're a good 30 yards, i think it's 31, 32 yards out. It had dip, it had swerve. Ryan knew where it was going and he still couldn't get to it. I mean, it was absolutely brilliant, brilliant free kick and worthy of winning any game.
00:04:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, deserve to win on that alone. Liverpool keep doing this, don't they? They keep eking out. yeah they They get these late winners. It's champions do, of course, isn't it Champions always find a way at the moment. Liverpool are just always finding a way and they're going into the international break absolutely delighted, imagine, with those nine points because there were some difficult games that they had to negotiate to get those nine points.
00:04:32
Nick Britten
They did. And I mean, the front three behind Ekiteke, who thought, again, played pretty well today. The front three was kept quiet by Arsenal. Salah looks off form.
00:04:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
He goes, it's
00:04:40
Nick Britten
His touch has deserted him. It really did. Wurz was okay. I mean, he wasn't great. Gakpo, I thought,
00:04:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
not
00:04:47
Nick Britten
No, Gakpo thought was pick of a bunch. He looked dangerous. He looked good. But Arsenal probably felt they had come and done the job they were they were doing So there's only a few minutes to go. There's only eight minutes to go. And they probably felt like they were going to hold out because they looked reasonably comfortable defensively. It's just frustrating not to see them go and attack the game a little bit more.
00:05:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Etiquite has been called to the French squad, by the way. We did the road to World Cup on France yesterday. It didn't get mentioned in that and because he hadn't been called up. He's been called up to date, the French squad. So obviously that's that's a big vote of confidence for him.
00:05:21
Nick Britten
Interesting. And it's probably notable to to say that Canati went off towards the end of this game with and he was he was walking very, very gingerly. He looked like he'd picked up an injury.
00:05:31
Nick Britten
And I wonder if that, A, hastens Liverpool's chase of Mark Gahey, who's playing right now. a Palace and Villa have just kicked off his captain and playing.
00:05:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
No question.
00:05:40
Nick Britten
But I wonder if it also adds another £10 million onto the asking price.
00:05:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Gahey United.
00:05:45
Nick Britten
of' worse It's worth saying that that that Joe Gomez came on for the last few minutes in place of Canati and played really well. He had two
00:05:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kermit never put the foot wrong, though.
00:05:53
Nick Britten
But he had two meaningful impacts on the game.
00:05:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's the right.
00:05:55
Nick Britten
you First, he cleared a header from a dangerous corner.
00:05:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:59
Nick Britten
ah he yeah There was a moment where it looked like he was going to give away a penalty on Eze, and he just pulled back and just did enough with a little bit of a nudge to put him off when Gay was in a really dangerous position ah to to shoot. So he did well when he came on Gomez. But I think once they've assessed the damage on Canate, and they haven't got long because the window closes tomorrow, they're going to be on the phone to Palace pretty quickly.
00:06:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Gahy and Isaac, you add those two players into that team and we're looking at the champions already, to be honest. I think Gahy will add things to the defence. No question about that. So what's that space? One other thing, just quickly, just to mention, on Arsenal, a couple of things.
00:06:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
The injuries keep mounting Saliba on top of Odegaard and Saka and all the rest of them.
00:06:45
Nick Britten
Odegaard came on.
00:06:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's really starting to hurt Arsenal, think.
00:06:46
Nick Britten
Odegaard's...
00:06:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Arsenal...
00:06:49
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:06:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they don't look great, Arsenal. They just don't look great anyway.
00:06:55
Nick Britten
No, Odegaard came on today. He and Eze came on towards the end of the game. Yeah, Saliba going off after only four minutes is is very worrying.
00:07:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:04
Nick Britten
And he knew straight away.
00:07:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:07:05
Nick Britten
he was He was in a challenge and he knew straight away the that he had to come off so early in the game.
00:07:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:07:11
Nick Britten
So that's not a good sign.
00:07:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, well it's been ah I think it's been a mediocre start for Arsenal. I think they're going to need this international break to kind of regroup and see where they're going. Only three points behind, of course, after three games. But just on performances...
00:07:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's something lacking there. And as we know, in football, it pays to get your team selection right.

Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, part two of an action-packed show. We better talk about the games that were played yesterday and earlier today. Let's chuck start with Chelsea.

Controversial VAR Decision in Chelsea-Fulham

00:08:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Jalap obviously pulled a hamstring, looked like, so that's going to be a loss for Chelsea. um I'm so pleased to have got João Pedro in my fantasy football team, captain, because he keeps he keeps doing it.
00:08:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
But...
00:08:31
Nick Britten
I'm so sorry that instead of picking him, I picked DeLat. He's been in my team for the last three weeks and he's...
00:08:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I know. You're going to need to make a change on that. But really what I don't want to talk about in this game, is I mean, Chelsea, che the three points Chelsea, fantastic. VAR.
00:08:43
Nick Britten
Yeah, absolutely appalling.
00:08:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
That Took it well, didn't
00:08:46
Nick Britten
Appalling decision by the video assistant referee. Yet again, here we go, talking about referees and talking about VAR. And if you haven't seen it, at 0-0, Josh King scored for Fulham. It was a great goal, lovely bit score, great finish.
00:09:03
Nick Britten
And Rob Jones, the referee, gave it. He's then instructed by the VAR, Michael Salisbury, to go and have a look at it. for a potential foul by Rodrigo Munez on Trevor Chalaba in the run-up to the goal.
00:09:19
Nick Britten
And if you look at look at it properly, Munez's lovely little bit of skill, takes him away from Chalabar. There's a little bit of contact between his boot and Chalabar's in that process, just a bit of contact.
00:09:32
Nick Britten
The referee let it go. Nobody said a word, blah, blah, blah. And then suddenly the goal is ruled out. It was a dreadful, dreadful decision at a time when game is coming on that foot.
00:09:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's all clear the position of the foot, wasn't it? The fact that he put his foot down on cho on top of the Chelsea player.
00:09:46
Nick Britten
What's he meant to do? Look at his body movement. Look at his body movement look at his natural body movement and what he's doing.
00:09:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:09:50
Nick Britten
Where is he meant to put his foot?
00:09:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I agree with that.
00:09:52
Nick Britten
It's just coming together by two players challenging for the ball. anyway Anyway, ah we know we are right because Salisbury got booted off the Arsenal-Liverpool game today. He was due to be VAR or that.
00:10:03
Nick Britten
The PGMOL, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited, which runs the referees, said that it was a wrong decision, it was a bad decision, and he was removed from the Liverpool-Arsenal game today. So, look, that's little comfort for Marco Silva and Josh King, I am sure.
00:10:17
Nick Britten
um But the other point to note on that is when are referees going to stand up for themselves? When are they going to go and look at the monitor and say, no, actually, I disagree with you. I'm going to go with my original decision. I've seen it, but I disagree with you.
00:10:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
You never see that, do you? They generally go with the guidance, don't they, from outside?
00:10:32
Nick Britten
don't see it. they what you but No, they don't generally go with it. They always go with it. They always go with it.
00:10:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:10:39
Nick Britten
And I know they've got five people in the VAR room at Stockley Park all going, you need to look at this, you need to look at this. Therefore, you've got doubt put in your mind. But he's had the opportunity to look at it on the screen.
00:10:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:10:51
Nick Britten
Just grow a pair and say, no, no, no, I was right the first time. You guys watching it on telly, fine, but I'm living it in the moment on the pitch with these players. umm going to give a goal.
00:11:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I bet the ref is absolutely fuming about that because he gave it.
00:11:03
Nick Britten
yeah yeah Yeah, he did the right thing. Rob Jones did the right thing. Yeah, he's been badly let down by by his video assistant, Michael Salisbury. And, well, they may be sharing, having a pint together some stage, but I don't think he'll be very soon.
00:11:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
very interesting game. Good three points for Chelsea. Chelsea look decent. They look decent without being magnificent.
00:11:26
Nick Britten
on Yeah, I don't think I'm in the look all right. A little bit like Arsenal, you don't really feel hit the stride yet.
00:11:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, it's an interesting one because apart from Liverpool, it's difficult see here is but let's come to who is. let's come to a team that is hitting its stride. At last, Man United 3, Burnley 2.
00:11:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
What a game. i mean, it was a it was a what, wasn't it?
00:11:50
Nick Britten
Yeah, I'm not sure you can say Man Utd have hit their stride. I think what you can probably say is they've squeaked and squealed their way past Burnley thanks to a 97th minute penalty by Bruno Fernandes.
00:12:04
Nick Britten
So I don't a ah don't think that you can ah don't think that you can say
00:12:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Amorim, I...

Man United's Narrow Victory

00:12:09
Nick Britten
they've hit their stride at all.
00:12:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did you... I mean, obviously, you would have seen the penalty. And as a qualified ref, I always bow to you on these things. That looked a bit outside the box to me, but...
00:12:17
Nick Britten
No, the rule the rule is, so the foul started outside the box, but the rule is if you are holding somebody or pulling a shirt in this case, and it starts out outside the box but continues into the box, it's a penalty, which is why you generally see the attacking player, they don't go down straight away.
00:12:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:12:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fair enough.
00:12:32
Nick Britten
They try and get into the box first and go down because they're going to get a penalty out of it. So no, that was the correct decision. um Tough on Burnley, who who you could argue, you know, i deserved a point away at Old Trafford, but fair play to Fernandes the pressure on him there.
00:12:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:12:48
Nick Britten
Stepping up, taking that penalty would have been absolutely enormous.
00:12:51
Nick Britten
And really, I don't know, though. i Listen, I don't know whether that answers any questions on Ameren whatsoever. I don't think we're left any clearer.
00:12:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely.
00:12:59
Nick Britten
It's not like they went out.
00:12:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did you watch him when the penalty was taken?
00:13:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
He wasn't watching at all.
00:13:02
Nick Britten
doesn't watch him, does it? It doesn't watch penalties ever. I just think it sends out all the wrong signals.
00:13:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Has it always been an Amarim thing? Did he do that in Portugal?
00:13:10
Nick Britten
Yeah, he's never done it, he said. He says, I've never watched them. I've watched the crowd for their reaction. I don't understand that.
00:13:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Crazy.
00:13:15
Nick Britten
You're the coach. You're the manager. What signal does it send out your players?
00:13:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:13:19
Nick Britten
doesn't make any sense to me at all. Anyway, as I said, it doesn't leave us...
00:13:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
A very bad one. So what one
00:13:24
Nick Britten
Well, yeah, it doesn't leave us any further forward, I don't think.
00:13:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
when that's ah when that game finished, you know we is that a turn-off for United or was it just a relegation dogfight that a team wins by a dodgy goal, isn't it?
00:13:35
Nick Britten
Well, I'll tell you what...
00:13:38
Nick Britten
ah I'll tell you what will be. I'll tell you what the turning point is. It'll be a turning point for Manchester United because after yet more goalkeeping woes, they can't pick a gold like anybody in goal.
00:13:49
Nick Britten
They have today really reignited their interest in Emilio Martinez from Aston Villa. And if they get Martinez in, that's a game changer. And they were linked very heavily with him at the start of the window.
00:14:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, they were. And it got very quiet.
00:14:01
Nick Britten
Then turns more than quiet and they've looked at one or two other keepers. They know. i mean, there's talk of even putting 39-year-old Tom Heaton in goal. Because neither goalkeeper can can do a job for them.
00:14:15
Nick Britten
So if they if if the game against Burnley makes them understand that they need a better keeper in, then Martinez would be huge. It'd be a massive signing for them because he's such a good goalkeeper.
00:14:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that would be a big signing. It'll cost him ah a bit. The Celia Lammons one from Royal um Antwerp seems to have gone a bit quiet. I mean, just he's not been playing because everybody's expectation was that he was going to go to Man United, but that itself has gone a bit quiet.
00:14:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Burnley were very slack at the back, I thought, by the way. Man United were very wasteful up front. Guayamo scored eventually, but he was pretty wasteful. Man United were very shaky. I mean, the first Burnley goal, was he was wide open, right in the middle of the goal, wasn't he?
00:14:52
Nick Britten
that
00:14:57
Nick Britten
Yeah, I mean, they just don't look any better. They don't look they don't show any signs of getting any better. And as I say, this doesn't answer any... i mean, they had to win it. if you know If they lose against Burnley, then Ameren's really walking a tightrope.
00:15:08
Nick Britten
I don't think that tightrope's any particular thinner or thicker as a result of this game, other than everybody's a little bit more relieved, I would say.
00:15:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, moving on. Sunderland-Brentford. ah I think we said a few weeks ago that Sunderland, it's all going to be about the home form. It's all going to be about maxing maxing out the performances and at the stadium alike.
00:15:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brentford, we've got our doubts about. I think you had him as one of your relegation candidates. 2-1 for Sunderland in the end. They're going to be delighted with another three points.
00:15:41
Nick Britten
Yeah, and deservedly so. I mean, it was a very late goal, wasn't it? 97th minute.
00:15:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:45
Nick Britten
Great cross, great header.
00:15:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:46
Nick Britten
But Kelleher will not be wanting to watch that again because he should have saved that.
00:15:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:52
Nick Britten
He should have saved that. It's down low to his right. But he gets hands on it, he gets body on it, and it just kind of goes through him a little bit. And i think he should I think he should have done much better.
00:16:03
Nick Britten
ah really do. But a fair play Sunderland. You know, they've stuck at it. they yeah They took the game to Brentford, 12 shots, three on target, higher XG, higher ah possession.
00:16:15
Nick Britten
Looks like the Stadium of Light is going to be a happy hunting ground for them. A bit ah but of a home fortress, which, let's face it, every Premier League team needs if you're going to survive.
00:16:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
go doubt about it It's just going to have a Newcastle feel about it. It's a long way to go for for teams. It's a lot of travel. It feels like a different part of the country. It's loud. It's noisy. People are raucous.
00:16:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not a pleasant place to go and apply your trade if you're a Brentford fullback.

Sunderland Fans' Unique Celebration

00:16:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
So...
00:16:40
Nick Britten
Well, it wasn't at the end of it because the TV cameras were panning to fat Sunderland fans with their tops off. And that is not a pleasant sight, I can tell you that. They've they've nicked that from the Chordies up the road, that's for sure.
00:16:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
It isn't. It isn't. Yeah, that's true. Moving on then. This was a game, well, certainly I had as a home banker, the Spurs-Bournemouth game.
00:17:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I really fancied Spurs.
00:17:02
Nick Britten
Yes, you're moved out.
00:17:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought Spurs had kind of turned a corner. I thought they were looking really good in the first. I mean, the performance against City was outstanding. I thought, here we'd go Spurs has got a proper team.
00:17:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then they go and trip up in ah in a in the game against Bournemouth. They really should have won.
00:17:20
Nick Britten
Well, I started the ah started the yeah last week's podcast when they beat Man City by saying Spurs are back. Having done all that and lost to Bournemouth at home in a very insipid display, my my reaction is this, Spurs are back.
00:17:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, but very spurty.
00:17:35
Nick Britten
Because it's a very Spurs-type result, wasn't it?
00:17:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:39
Nick Britten
Very slack, indifferent, nothing really got going.
00:17:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:43
Nick Britten
Bournemouth played very, very well, deserved the win. They were the one with all the chance. To be fair, if it had been 2-0, even 3-0, I don't think anybody would have complained too much. they were They were much the better team against Tottenham.
00:17:54
Nick Britten
ah don't know what I don't know what was all flat about that. I don't know.
00:17:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, it might just have one-off. It's interesting to see what happens or when they come back after the international break. But that was a very disappointing performance from Spurs, but a very pleasing performance by Everton. Now, you had this in our predictions that Everton were going to go to Wolves and walk away with three points, and they did.
00:18:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Everton looked like a half-decent team all of a sudden.
00:18:14
Nick Britten
Yes.
00:18:18
Nick Britten
Well, Jack Grealish has added a different level to their play.
00:18:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Made a difference.
00:18:22
Nick Britten
He has made a huge difference. And yet again, he was the star of the show yesterday. That's three games now I think he's played where he's really lit up the place. Playing with a lot of freedom, playing with a smile on his face, being given permission by David Moyes to do what he wants, essentially, in terms of roaming around and getting on the ball and making things happen.
00:18:41
Nick Britten
And that's that's just added another dimension to Everton's play. And going to Wolves isn't going to be that hard a job for teams, I don't think, this season. Strand Larsson, interestingly, wasn't playing.
00:18:52
Nick Britten
Of course, he is subject of a lot of speculation around moving to Newcastle United. He was injured, and I would wrap quote marks around that and and scratch my child's
00:19:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Achilles, wasn't it? I mean, no one's going to argue with the Achilles. Oh, he's got ah he's got an Achilles problem. Yeah, of course he has.
00:19:07
Nick Britten
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Transfer deadline day-itis may be more of problem for Australian Larsson.
00:19:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, think.
00:19:13
Nick Britten
He still wants to move to Newcastle. i'm gonna I'm going to mention in a moment Johan Wisser because an extraordinary story broken about him today. And be speaking about people wanting to go to Newcastle.
00:19:24
Nick Britten
So, yeah, I don't think going to Wolves is that hard. I think Everton are playing well and I fancied them. And they came through. They came through. 3-2, I didn't actually think... was a fair reflection of the game. I thought Everton was a bit... I thought 3-1 would have been a fair reflection of the game.
00:19:40
Nick Britten
Wolves did score late to to put a bit of jeopardy in there. But they're in a spot of bother, Wolves.
00:19:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, they look clueless, don't they, at the moment.
00:19:46
Nick Britten
They really are. Yeah, yeah. And I would have thought last night, I would have thought, yeah, Wolves and West Ham are the two sort of existing Premier teams who've really got something to worry about.
00:19:59
Nick Britten
And then, then, what happens...
00:20:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
will we'll come We'll come to that, but i want there's a game I want i want to talk about before. By the way, just before we move on from Everton, what is it, do you think, that has reignited Jack Grealish's love of

Jack Grealish's Performance Under Moyes

00:20:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
football life? Because he looks a different player, completely different player from when he used to trot on a occasion very occasion for Man City.
00:20:22
Nick Britten
Well, two things. He's undoubtedly, well, maybe three. He's undoubtedly a player who wants an arm around his shoulder. yeah he wants He wants to feel loved.
00:20:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:20:30
Nick Britten
He wants to feel appreciated. And he didn't get any of that at Man City. he was He was frozen out. He was sidelined. He didn't play. But when he was at Man City also, he played with a straitjacket on, as Man City players have to do.
00:20:43
Nick Britten
you have You're told, you've got to do this. And if you if you don't do that, you're out the team. So he's ah he's a really, really creative player, Grealish. He likes to drift around. He likes to do different things. And that doesn't suit Man City's play at all.
00:20:57
Nick Britten
but it suits Everton's play. And you've got manager in David Moyes, I think, who will and has put his arm around him, who appreciates the value he brings to Everton. Now, bringing value to Everton is very different to bringing value to Manchester City.
00:21:12
Nick Britten
So he can do he can bring value to Everton that he can't do to Manchester City because they're not as good a side. And Moyes has recognised it.
00:21:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that's true. I mean, you see the flares on it. Yeah.
00:21:21
Nick Britten
It's a brilliant piece of man management by David Moyes. And that was the third thing I was going to mention. He's a brilliant manager, David Moyes, and he recognises what Grealish can bring to the team. And he's putting that in motion.
00:21:32
Nick Britten
So you've got happy manager, a happy player.
00:21:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah, that makes sense. We've seen a lot. We've seen the flair side of Grittich, which I like. He's not overburdened by responsibility, as you quite rightly point out.
00:21:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that's really releasing his joie de vivre again, and that's that's fantastic. Final game of Saturday was Leeds-Newcastle, a team close to your heart. 0-0. Looked like he was going to be 0-0 if he played quite a long time.
00:21:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah What was your take on the game?
00:22:01
Nick Britten
It was dreadful. was boring. It was rubbish. Move on. It was a game, frankly, that didn nothing about it whatsoever. Two teams cancelled each other out.
00:22:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:22:10
Nick Britten
Neither had. Neither looked like they were going to score. Defenses were on top. Game was played in midfield. It was a really boring game.
00:22:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah.
00:22:18
Nick Britten
Sometimes you go...
00:22:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
and you
00:22:19
Nick Britten
Sometimes have say about 0-0s, it was a really exciting game.
00:22:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've seen plenty of them on Elspeth.
00:22:23
Nick Britten
Although we've seen some good 0-0s, this was definitely not one of them. So, no.
00:22:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, it wasn't.
00:22:28
Nick Britten
the Very dull...
00:22:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
And just kind of reiterates the point, doesn't it? There's there's <unk> a big chunk, there's a big jigsaw piece missing at Newcastle. I think we dont know where it is. I mean, see as we said before, they've got a great midfield, but there's just no threat, no service, no one to service to.
00:22:41
Nick Britten
Yeah, look no no no threat no no throwout got no throw up top. The new guy, Voltemada, was in the stands before he heads off to international duty.
00:22:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:52
Nick Britten
So that's good. He's signed, sealed and delivered. And I think, I expect by tomorrow, they'll have either Strand Larsson or Wisser through the door, one or the other.
00:23:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
You don't think both? Hmm.
00:23:02
Nick Britten
I don't think both because I'm not sure. It's a really difficult... No, I don't. I don't think i don't think they'll be in the market for both. And they're they're both going to cost a lot of money because... new Newcastle are obviously desperate.
00:23:15
Nick Britten
Brentford are asking far too much for this. ah Wolves are offering fire are wanting far too much for Strand Larsson. So if you put them if you're paying the asking price, looking at £120 million. quid Now, they might decide that if they can get a deal done early in the morning, for example, that will release EZAC to Liverpool. if it releases EZAC to Liverpool, they can afford to go out and buy somebody else.
00:23:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I wouldn't be surprised.
00:23:37
Nick Britten
But it's a gamble.
00:23:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they're so denuded of talent up front.
00:23:39
Nick Britten
a gamble.
00:23:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, there's nothing. Absolutely nothing. ah if you if you get If you get these two players because you're getting 130 million from Miza, suddenly you've got a potential to transform your season, particularly with the Champions League. they've got They've got so many opportunities.
00:23:55
Nick Britten
And that's fair. And Whistler, don't forget here, you're not so playing light for light because Whistler's a very different player to Stran Larsson.
00:24:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, he is.
00:24:00
Nick Britten
Stran Larsson and Valtomar kind of what I would call traditional number nines, whereas Whistler will play it'll play left, he'll play right, he'll come in from deep, he'll attack from elsewhere. Now, Valtomar is a sort of player who likes to drop in, to connect the team together, to drop in, receive the ball and yeah have runners in behind him.
00:24:19
Nick Britten
And Whistler would be great at
00:24:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's huge. And it's a great target. Great target, man.
00:24:24
Nick Britten
yeah there was a picture on Instagram today. Dan Byrne put on his Instagram feed just saying, welcome to the club. You're a tall man. It was great.
00:24:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:30
Nick Britten
It was great. did The two of them. it's great. Two very tall blokes stood next to each other. was great pic.
00:24:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Those three would transform Liverpool at Newcastle season. Watch that space. I should be very interested. ah Right. I know we're going to move on quickly because dinner is nearly served. 00:25:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brighton against Man City, who saw this one come in?
00:25:25
Nick Britten
I did.
00:25:26
Nick Britten
and that's yeah and i said i mean, I only went for a draw yesterday.
00:25:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did you?
00:25:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
present
00:25:30
Nick Britten
No, I went for a draw. You're panicking now, aren't You're panicking.
00:25:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:25:35
Nick Britten
ah You said it would be the game that Man City rebounded and to get their season back.
00:25:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought this was the get-right game for City. they were going smash them, yeah.
00:25:41
Nick Britten
No, I didn't. I thought Brighton, if if either team was going to win, it'd be Brighton. and I never saw Man City winning this at all. ah did think it was going to be a draw, but I was being probably a little bit conservative. Brighton were great. They played really well. They played really well. Man City started well.
00:25:54
Nick Britten
Good goal from Haaland. Typical kind of goal from Haaland.
00:25:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:25:57
Nick Britten
Touched the ball once.
00:25:58
Nick Britten
Goes to the back of the net. Thanks very much.
00:25:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:26:00
Nick Britten
Bye. was that.
00:26:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:01
Nick Britten
You just poached his goal. Stabbed it in from close range.
00:26:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. And at that point, I thought, I'm right. Yeah, this is going to be 4-0.
00:26:09
Nick Britten
It's not like you to think you're right, Ken.
00:26:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
I did for that fleeting moment, I think, I've i've got him in.
00:26:17
Nick Britten
ah But you were wrong. And...
00:26:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then...
00:26:20
Nick Britten
Yeah, penalty penalty um and a good finish, actually, for second goal. was really good It was a really good finish. It was a really good finish. and then and And then Brighton saw the game out, I thought, fairly comfortably. I expected a real Man City onslaught.
00:26:34
Nick Britten
But... didn't It didn't really come. And I thought in the end, bright and you know Brighton were pretty comfortable. pretty comfortable in those lot I mean, bear in mind the winner came in the 90th minute.
00:26:45
Nick Britten
But you've got then so I think it was seven minutes of injury time. And I was just expecting the Alamo.
00:26:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:26:49
Nick Britten
But the Alamo never came. And I thought Brighton were pretty comfortable. So well done, Gruda. It was a lovely finish from you to win the game. He was very happy young man. And of course, James Milner got on the score sheet aged...
00:27:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
seventy one
00:27:02
Nick Britten
Well, he scored in the 67th minute and that might just be how old he is. But so well done. what done Well
00:27:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, very very much so. But City, everyone thought City are going to big challenges in Liverpool, already six points behind after three games. I mean, the it works is the word crisis too strong?
00:27:20
Nick Britten
No, it's not because neither... Because to be fair, Liverpool have won all the games, but nobody's going, they look amazing. Arsenal, we've discussed, haven't really started. Chelsea haven't really started. Man City haven't really. It doesn't feel like the season's getting going for any of these teams yet.
00:27:34
Nick Britten
So, no, nothing's too late.
00:27:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:27:35
Nick Britten
We're only money three games in. ah Crazy.
00:27:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
<unk> scott It's got a very Liverpool-y feel about it, particularly they get Gaye and Isaac.
00:27:39
Nick Britten
Crazy.
00:27:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just don't see anybody being anywhere close to him at the moment. Right. Obviously, there's always one banker, one one banker game that we can just put your mortgage on, or lump it on at William Hill or wherever you go.
00:27:45
Nick Britten
but No, I'd agree.

West Ham's Unexpected Victory

00:27:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that game, of course, is Forrest-West Ham. It's just how many goals are Forrest going to score? How many goals did Forrest score? I can't remember.
00:28:07
Nick Britten
Well, there's no surprise that I'm recording this from a cardboard box because I put my house on ah put my house on this game. Forest scored none and West Ham scored three.
00:28:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
In the last nine minutes or whatever.
00:28:18
Nick Britten
I mean, and the yeah, yeah. And who thought, literally, who thought that was going to happen? And funnily enough, actually, because we live in Derby.
00:28:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
You captained one, didn't you? Did you captain one in your... you
00:28:32
Nick Britten
Yeah, I may, honestly, not going lie to you here. I'm not going to lie to you. when When I sign players or make them captain in my fantasy league team, they either have terrible games or get injured. I'm a some sort of curse.
00:28:46
Nick Britten
So all these Premier players, you better watch out because you make your way to my fantasy league team, it's finished.
00:28:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
You are.
00:28:51
Nick Britten
It's all over.
00:28:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we should make you tell everyone what your fantasy football league team is on our Thursday episode.
00:28:55
Nick Britten
think so.
00:28:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
So you'd be like, okay, um well, okay, don't Captain Ward.
00:28:57
Nick Britten
I think it should be.
00:29:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah.
00:29:01
Nick Britten
Yeah. But it was a nail um it's a great shot It was a great choice as captain.
00:29:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got...
00:29:06
Nick Britten
ah But Forrest were poor. They never got... West Ham, I mean, it wasn't like a surprise they won 3-0. Well, maybe it was a surprise they won 3-0. But in the context of the game, they defended stoically.
00:29:18
Nick Britten
They did what Forrest hate. They did what Forrest hate. They just said a low block and said, come and break us down. Forrest are terrible against teams like that. They rely on teams coming at them.
00:29:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm. Mm.
00:29:27
Nick Britten
and then hit them on the break. So they want to play in a low block. So in some respects, it was quite a surprise not to see one set of players at one end, the other set of players on the other end, and the ball just sitting in the middle and nobody going to try and kick it because they both wanted to play the same kind of game.
00:29:41
Nick Britten
They both wanted the other team to come on to them. West Ham, the onus is obviously on Forrest to attack at home. And West Ham dealt with it very, very comfortably. Very comfortably.
00:29:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think we talked about this yesterday maybe the day before, about the fact that Manarchus and Nuno are going to this kind of sit-down, this conciliatory meal, Greek probably, but do you reckon Manarchus is going to be throwing the plates halfway through this and start, right, what I'm really asking is do you think this result
00:30:16
Nick Britten
you
00:30:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
is is and just another step in the disintegration of that relationship.
00:30:23
Nick Britten
It doesn't. It can't help. <unk>t i don't I don't think it will have ah that have a massive difference. But you know what Maranakis is like? He's so tempestuous. And he will react to a game like this. And he'll look at that and go, I can't believe we've lost the team that can't beat anybody. And we've lost 3-0 home to them. So in my common sense would suggest it shouldn't, obviously, because it's a strategic conversation looking at the longer-term prospects of the club.
00:30:45
Nick Britten
But when does that matter to Maranakis? So, yeah, he would have much preferred going into this on the back of a comfortable victory. But but it never happened. Never happened.
00:30:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
I wish I'd look to be a fly on the wall. I'd look to be a fly on the Athene restaurant in Nottingham or wherever.
00:30:55
Nick Britten
Oh, absolutely.
00:31:00
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:31:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah that would be That would be wonderful. Right, that's it. Thanks, Nick. You go and get the dinner sorted. Thanks to everyone here listening to the Daily Premier League podcast. Thanks for tuning in every day.

00:31:13
Nick Britten
one more One more game to go, isn't there? Palace and Villa, they're playing at moment. 32 minutes gone. It's Aston Villa nil. Crystal Palace won. Jean-Philippe Mateta scored and he is in my fantasy league team.
00:31:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Woo!
00:31:22
Nick Britten
So there.
00:31:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Whee!
00:31:24
Nick Britten
He'll get to send off now.
00:31:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Whee! Yeah, I hope he knows he's been stretched off in the 60th minute with a broken leg.
00:31:28
Nick Britten
He'll score two own goals and then end me up with minus points or something.
00:31:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Poor fella.
00:31:33

00:31:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. Thanks, Nick. Go and have a tea. That's been fascinating. Another, well, another week of fascinating results. We've got we've got a big, long, just empty two weeks of nothing.
00:32:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we'll fill it with very interesting stuff that's going to happen over the next couple of weeks.
00:32:07
Nick Britten
like
00:32:10
Nick Britten
It's transfer deadline day tomorrow.
00:32:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:32:13
Nick Britten
It's transfer deadline day. It's one of the absolutely key talking points of the season. we're We're going to feed off that for about three or four days easily.
00:32:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
gonna ask We're going to have to. But I think there are going to be some dominoes the fall, aren't there? There are going to be some dominoes.
00:32:24
Nick Britten
Yeah, I think it but should be really interesting day. Often transfer deadline days are a bit dull. I think tomorrow there's going to be, there's lots to happen tomorrow. There's lots to happen.
00:32:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is it just me? Has this been a particularly interesting transfer deadline window? I think it's been fascinating.
00:32:36
Nick Britten
It's felt like a very long one.
00:32:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's
00:32:38
Nick Britten
It seems to have gone on for a long, long time. But know it has been interesting.
00:32:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
been a lot of money spent.
00:32:41
Nick Britten
interesting <unk>s been interesting because It's been interesting because Izak went on strike.
00:32:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:32:44
Nick Britten
That's dominated, hasn't it?
00:32:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah, yeah.
00:32:46
Nick Britten
mentioned Wisser earlier on. He's put out a statement today which very much mimics Izak saying that essentially I've been let down. i've been I've got promises in writing.
00:32:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was promised.
00:32:55
Nick Britten
yeah I want to move to Newcastle. Let me move to Newcastle now was was the crux of his statement. So we'll see.
00:33:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:33:02
Nick Britten
We'll see what happens.
00:33:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
