Tottenham Triumphs Over Manchester City
00:00:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh yes, welcome to the Daily Premier League podcast. It's Saturday afternoon here in the UK and we're halfway through the Premier League fixtures for this weekend. We've had a range of games today, one last night, and the headlines are pretty straightforward.
00:00:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Spurs are back! Yes, folks, a fantastic win for Tottenham today away at Manchester City and elsewhere. The misery piles on For Potter, Graham Potter at West Ham, 5-1 defeat at home to Chelsea last night.
00:00:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Elsewhere to today... In the battle of the promoted size, Burnley beat Sunderland 2-0. Brentford got their season underway with the one theyll win at home to Aston Villa. And Bournemouth beat Wolves 1-0 at the Vitality.
00:01:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
But there is really only one place to start. There's only one place to start. And that is the Etihad today, where Tottenham beat Manchester City 2-0.
00:01:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And what a performance. What a performance from the men in white. They played really, really well. Man City, let's face it, they breezed past Wolves last week. Everybody expected them to carry that on.
00:01:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Spurs have got a good record. the idea he had This is their second win in a tro in in the row, back-to-back wins there. They were terrific. They were terrific from the off. And it just shows...
00:01:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
It just shows what Thomas Frank and the sort of job he's doing out there because Tottenham were today, quite frankly, something that they hadn't been for the entirety of last season.
00:01:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
They were hard to break down. They were hard to score against. They were disciplined. They were pragmatic in their play. And they got their award. They were given a helping hand, it's fair to say, by Manchester City, who were right off it today. They weren't really at the races at any stage in the game.
00:02:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it was defensive suicide for the second goal. Let's face it. But the goals from Tottenham today, Brennan Johnson following a breakaway a goal that was initially ruled out for offside, but VAR...
00:02:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah had a good little look at it and awarded the goal. And then the second goal, which is perhaps the talking point of the game, because it came in injury time at the end of the first half. And it kind of killed Manchester City completely.
00:02:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah And it was it was just a really bad mistake by James Trafford. Now, James Trafford is the goalkeeper who, of course, was amazing for Burnley last season. 30 clean sheets for Burnley last season.
00:02:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that really was the bedrock upon which they were promoted. He got the move back to Manchester City in the summer. They had a buyback clause on him. Stuck straight in. Did a great job last week in in the 4-0 victory against Wolves.
00:03:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Today, he looked a little bit shaky. And as the game headed into injury time, I'm afraid to say, dropped a real clangour. Now, if you haven't seen it, The Manchester City had had ah a goal kick.
00:03:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
You've got one defend central defender on the six-yard area on the corner. The other defender on the other six-yard area is what i'm trying to say. And Trafford stood in the middle.
00:03:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, one defender plays it to Trafford. He's got a choice then because Tottenham are set up for this. Tottenham are set up. They know what's going to happen. So they're crawling all over the Manchester City defence. Trafford kind of Gets the ball at his feet and from a second, quite frankly, looks like a rabbit caught in headlights. He just doesn't know what to do.
00:03:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And at that stage, if I'm brutally honest, the only thing he should be doing and should be thinking about is protect your goal, clear your lines, get rid of the ball. But of course, Manchester City aren't allowed to do that.
00:03:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
So instead, and even he could easily even have played it back to either of those centre-halves who stood still pretty much on the edge of the six-yard area. But instead, he plays it into, I think it was i think it was Nico, runs in towards him with Saar all over his back. He plays it into Nico, plays into his wrong foot.
00:04:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Saar dispossesses him and within about a second, the balls in the back of the Manchester City net. And it's Paulinia,
Manchester City's Surprising Defeat
00:04:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Jao Paulinia, who scores the goal, his first for Tottenham. It was defensive suicide, but it was not only defensive suicide, it was game management suicide on the basis that they're 1-0 down in injury time at the end of the first half.
00:04:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
okay To go into go into the half-time 2-0 down, that's the end of the game pretty much because Man City came out second half, they they made five subs, they'd Tried to throw the kitchen sink at Tottenham, but to brutally honest, they didn't.
00:04:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Spurs were really comfortable. They were really comfortable. And Thomas Frank had them set up brilliantly today because they were good on the ball. They really looked to exploit the very high line that Manchester City were playing. They dominated in the midfield area.
00:05:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
And fair play. Yeah, Richarlison looks like a new player, by the way. He looks like a player of reborn under Thomas Frank. Had a hand in both of the goals. and led the line very, very well.
00:05:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
So not an afternoon that perhaps we were expecting. I think people, myself included, thought Man City would win this after their very impressive start last week. But fair play to Thomas Frank, fair play Spurs. They love going to the Etihad. They love playing Man City there.
00:05:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they'll go away with two points. And and already Tottenham, they are, as I said at the start of the intro, they are back because they already look a much, much better side than they did at any stage last season.
00:05:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because they, you know, Thomas Frank's a great manager. We know that. We know the job he did at Brentford. But they look, as i say, organised, well-disciplined. All the players know what they're doing. They're enjoying the football. Very threatening an attack.
00:05:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, Johnson had a very good game again. Another goal for him. And happy days. Well done. Well done at Tottenham. Six points, two wins out two. But as far as Man City was concerned, they were a shadow of the team that breezed past Wolves.
00:06:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
They were pretty poor, out of possession. they didn't They looked a bit leggy, if I'm honest. They looked a bit disinterested. Didn't really know what to do. The high line was a constant encouragement for Tottenham to attack them.
00:06:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
And up front, Tottenham were were very comfortable in defence. So, yeah, interesting. Interesting. But a great day for Spurs. More work and back to the drawing board for Man City, I'm afraid.
00:06:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah We'll
Chelsea's Dominant Win Over West Ham
00:06:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
have a look next at probably the biggest talking point, again, other than that ah Tottenham win at Man City. And that is, of course, what's going on at West Ham. Now, they had a pretty humbling 3-0 defeat rather at Sunderland on the opening game of a season.
00:06:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the West Ham faithful were undoubtedly turning up at the London Stadium expecting a bit of a response. Well, I'm afraid to say it never came.
00:07:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I'll say never came. It kind of came in the first couple of minutes of the game because West Ham started really, really well. They came out of the traps. They looked to attack Chelsea and they got their reward, actually. I'll be too fair. They got their reward with a lovely finish after, was it, i six minutes or so from Lucas Paquitar. was really, really nice finish. was a good goal.
00:07:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Good to see him back. He's obviously recently cleared of match-fixing allegations. Good to see him back playing football. He's good player on his day. And they yeah that that goal was very much a reward for their good start. But If I'm brutally honest, that's kind of as good as it got because Chelsea played their way into the game. To be fair to West Ham, they did have a goal ruled out ah um because of, well, it was a VAR decision. The goal went in, ah but it was offside, think.
00:07:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Chelsea then just got their way back back into the game. Three goals in 10 minutes, midway through the first half. Game over. Gio Pedro, Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandes scored.
00:08:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
So West Ham, again, feeble at the back. Okay, we saw this at Sunderland last week. They were feeble at the back. Can't really defend. Dreadful defending of corners. Three of the goals came corners today.
00:08:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
one of them One of them was Cucurella making first contact with a ball. So corner comes up. Cucurella heads it on. He's five foot nine West Ham play with three centre-halves. Okay, and they can't defend.
00:08:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
What are they doing on the training ground? That's the question. But if West Ham were to offer a response in the second half, didn't really come... Chelsea extended their lead through Moises Caissado on 54. And then four minutes later, ah Chalabar rounded it off.
00:08:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Game over with still half an hour to play. The ground emptied out. I'm not going to lie here because we're watching this game. It just emptied out. By the time when a final whistle came, there was nobody left.
00:08:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the ones that did left kind of booed. But the Chelsea fans were enjoying themselves in the away end and it's got their season off to ah ah good start. They were pretty insipid last week when they drew 0-0 home to Crystal Palace. Much better yesterday.
00:09:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Much better. ah And that's for West Ham. That's what? Without a win, six home games now. Eight goals conceded in the first two games of the season.
00:09:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Graham Potter's got a job on. He's got a job on because his record is now less than a point a game since he took over from Julien Lopetegu in January. Karen Brady was on Talk Sport here in the UK the other day just talking about what great man manager he was.
00:09:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
There is no sign of that, I'm afraid, in the opening two games of the season. They look just flat. There's nothing good to say about them other than the fact they've got 11 players out of the pitch who are kind of milling around.
00:09:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
As soon as you put them under pressure, you're going to score against them. They look a little bit disorganized. They look a little bit languid. They lack organization. lack flair. they just There's something in there that is just missing. And if I don't get this sorted out very, very quickly, they're going to be finding themselves in a relegation battle very, very soon.
00:10:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
So
Ad Read Technical Difficulties
00:10:12

a bad night for Graham Potter, a bad night for West Ham. The pressure's got to be starting to grow on him. and But for Chelsea, hey, five goals away from home, what's not to love?

through GSPN, have a look at the show notes. Right, elsewhere then today in the Premier League, the battle of the promoted size Burnley against Sunderland.
00:11:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think I was expecting a 0-0 draw out of this, but fair play. Burnley got their first winning points the season. They won 2-0. It was a very closely contested game. It was an even game. Sunderland were always in it. I mean, Burnley's second goal didn't come till right at the end.
00:11:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sunderland were always in it. They put some good pressure on Burnley, but fair play to Burnley. Not much has changed at home for the home supporters. They built their promotion, as I said earlier on, on the back of 30, yes, 30 clean sheets in the championship last season.
00:11:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
And despite the departure of James Trafford to Manchester City, they're at it again. Nothing much has changed there. So Sunderland obviously scored three against West Ham last week. They would have gone into this game with a bit of confidence.
00:12:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
But no, Josh Cullen and Jadon Anthony were the scorers today. Josh Cullen just after half-time got the first one. Jadon Anthony with a couple of minutes to go. Burnley also had a goal rolled out in the second half.
00:12:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Doesn't tell the entire story. Sunderland had their chances, but couldn't get the ball into the net. And return to Wearside, empty-handed.
00:12:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Empty-handed. Chances today a bit of a premium, but so well played to Burnley there. ah Elsewhere, Brentford played Villa. Now, Brentford... ah Well, were. i might have to change my mind after today.
00:12:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
But they were my hot tips to go down this year after losing the manager, after losing half their team. But they were great against Villa today. They played really, really well. And it was a good afternoon for the new B's boss, Keith Andrews.
00:12:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very poor last week when they lost 3-1 to Forest away. Just thinking about that. All those three goals coming in the first half as well. So the game was done and dusted by half-time last week. And Brentford were quite frankly dreadful.
00:13:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mean, they were torn apart by Noddington Forest last week. They needed to be better today. They were much better today. They were much more on it. Uatra, Dango Uatra got the only goal of the game. It was a long ball from Keller in goal, just flicked on.
00:13:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well played, by the way, by by yeah Utara, who forced his way in between the centre-halves. Got a shot in on goal. Martinez saved it, but he was quickest to the rebound and ah rolled it into the empty net ah for the only goal of the game.
00:13:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
As for Villa, plenty of huffing and puffing, 17 shots left. on goal, although only two of those were target on target, and in fact, Redford, who only had nine shots, also two on target, had a higher XG. So they were creating the better chances here.
00:13:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Villa had 76% possession. okay So they were doing something right, but the reality is they've had two games now at the start the season and they haven't scored a goal yet.
00:14:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
They drew 0-0 at home to Newcastle, Last week, and of course they've lost 1-0 away at Brentford. But it gets Brentford's season up and running.
00:14:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
So well done to Keith Andrews. He'll enjoy a pint tonight, no doubt. And fair play to Brentford. They've done very well there. ah Villa. Well, back to the drawing board, I suppose. You know, they they they did really well last season. They've got European football to play, but not a great start in the first couple of games in the Premier League.
00:14:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And
Bournemouth's Improvement
00:14:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
the final game to talk about that took place this afternoon was down at the Vitality, Bournemouth versus Wolves. Now, both of them lost last week, but in very contrasting circumstances. Now, Bournemouth went to Liverpool. They lost 4-2, but played very, very well.
00:14:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
And at one stage they were 2-0 down but pulled it back to 2-2. Liverpool had to rely on two very late goals last week to win that game. Wolves on the other hand were pretty wretched and toothless against a rampant Manchester City, losing 4-0.
00:15:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
They must have dreaded going down to Bournemouth. Although, as we said in yesterday's podcast, their record at the vitality is very good. It's it's a ground they don't lose at. if I'm honest with you. ah But lose they did.
00:15:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Lose they did today. ah one nil The only goal of the game came very, very early on. It was four minutes in when Marcus Tavernier took a ball from Semenyo.
00:15:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Had a go. It was wickedly deflected. um Unfortunate, really, but for Wolves, but wickedly deflected into the the top of goal. And that, as far as goals, was it.
00:15:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bournemouth started brilliantly. They were on fire. Semenyo should have made it 2-0 a couple of minutes later. He somehow hit the bar from four yards out. i mean, the ball's kind of bouncing. It's in front of him.
00:15:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
He slid in, but he must be scoring from there. He didn't. ah Wolves did have their moments, notably a Strand-Larsen shot, which was well saved by Djore Petrovic in the Bournemouth goal. Good one-handed stop, that was.
00:16:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
At the other end, Tyler Adams almost made it two and put the game behind, sorry, beyond the visitors. But Jose Sarr made a decent stop. I think... For Wolves, really, the the problems came early in the second half when Toti Gomez was sent off. He red-carded for ah bringing down Evan Nilsson as the Bournemouth player was in on goal.
00:16:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Deemed by the referee as denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, a dog's own. and straight red. And to be honest with you, you 1-0 down, you're then a man down, you've got to play the rest of the game with 10 men. It is ah an uphill battle, and that's exactly what it proved to be.
00:16:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Bournemouth, in the end, seeing the game out pretty comfortably. They look good, they look composed on the ball, they look pretty comfortable throughout. i thought they were the better side. Certainly deserved the win.
00:16:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
As for Wolves, ah you know, is it was a slightly better showing, I think, than last week. But still, two games, two defeats, um lots of work to do, I think.
00:17:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Lots of work to

00:17:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Arsenal and Leeds are playing at the moment. It's 11 minutes in. There's no score there. Thinking ahead about tomorrow, the rest of the Premier League fixtures tomorrow, Palace are at home to Nottingham Forest in what's a bit of a grudge match.
00:17:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of course, Forest bleated to UEFA about Palace getting into the Europa League, whilst Forest were one place below them and into the Europa Conference League.
00:17:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
And as a result of their bleating, whinging and moaning, ah Palace were demoted out into the into the Conference League, Forest left. taking their place in the Europa League. So there's a bit of a grudge match there.
00:17:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Both managers unhappy with their lot at the moment. We saw the press conference, we talked about it in the podcast yesterday, that Nuno Espirito Santo, seemingly his relationship has broken down with ah the owner Maranakis and...
00:18:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, doesn't look like he's going to be long in the Forest hot seat, if I'm brutally honest. And Oliver Glasner, not happy at Palace, not happy with things have gone on last week, and certainly not happy with the fact that they knew they were going to sell it. think they've known it for a while, but they haven't got a replacement in.
