Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, big welcome, everybody, on a busy fridays Friday.
00:00:14
Nick Britten
Thank you.
00:00:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Friday, 22nd of August. My name's Ken Davis. This is the Daily Premier League podcast, your daily deep dive into all things Premier League. It's Friday. There's a busy weekend coming up, and already there's a lot of news.

Nuno Espiritu Santo and Nottingham Forest Troubles

00:00:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm joined today, as always, by my esteemed colleague, the world champion of football pundits.
00:00:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's Nick Britton. How are you doing it?
00:00:40
Nick Britten
I'm very well, thank you very much. News, news is breaking as we speak. And I love a bit of news, as you well know. Lots to go through in today's podcast.
00:00:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
if There is indeed. This is the beauty of doing a daily Premier League podcast because stuff's happening around us all the time. There's a lot of moving parts. This is today's, this lunchtime's breaking news.
00:01:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Looks like things are breaking down at the city ground in Nottingham. Nuno Espiritu Santo, we love him. He's great manager. Evanguades Marinakis, who is the chairman, we're not so keen on.
00:01:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, it looks like those two are kind of breaking. Their relationship seems to be fracturing. Nick, what can you bring us on that story?
00:01:20
Nick Britten
Well, we knew at the end of last season, there was an incident at the end of last season whereby Forrest, who were chasing Champions League at that stage, and their owner, Maranakis, had made the financial arrangements already that meant that Forrest could compete in the Champions League without any any kind of two-club ownership situation arising, as we saw at Palace.
00:01:44
Nick Britten
So he was nailed on. I mean, he was he was going for this big time. And Forrest played Leicester. And there was a lot of controversy at the end of that game because ah the Forrest striker, Taiwo O'Neillie, got injured.
00:01:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:01:57
Nick Britten
And they didn't substitute him. And then they ended up not being able to substitute him because ah they they'd already used all their subs. So they essentially had to play the last few minutes with 10 men. And they didn't win the game. And bear in mind, Leicester were a wretched side last year.
00:02:10
Nick Britten
They got relegated. They were awful. Not beating Leicester at home was a pretty poor result. ah We then saw an extraordinary situation where Maranakis storms onto the pitch and confronts Nuno Espirito Santo as he's talking to one of the players.
00:02:24
Nick Britten
And seems to be wagging you know his finger out, he's furious at him. And then Forrest's PR machine rolled into operation and claimed, oh no, there was a bit of confusion about what was going on with the striker and nobody was quite sure what was happening and it's all fine, bla blah, blah, blah.
00:02:40
Nick Britten
But you and I looked at that at the time and said, that's a problem and it's going to be a problem.
00:02:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, this is where it changes.
00:02:45
Nick Britten
This where it all changes.
00:02:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
This is where it changes.
00:02:47
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:02:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
We said it at the time, didn't we?
00:02:50
Nick Britten
Yeah. And now fast forward a couple of months and ahead of the Premier League opener last week, ah Nuno was quite vocal about his disappointment at the lack of transfer activity that Forrest had ah been operational with. And he said they're not in the right place. so They're not ready for the new season, bearing in mind they're now also playing the Europa League, although they finished in the Premier League qualifying for the Conference League.
00:03:16
Nick Britten
They got promoted to the Europa League because Crystal Palace, who qualified the Europa League, got removed and demoted to the Conference League because of this two-club ownership situation.
00:03:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:03:26
Nick Britten
So they're playing the Europa League, they're playing in the yeah in the Premier League, and Nuno wasn't happy with with their level of signings. We did see a few more signings after that, after those comments were made, and Forrest have indeed.
00:03:38
Nick Britten
you know they bought some They bought quite a lot of players in. you know They bought Omari Hutchinson in now for £37.5 million. ah They bought Dan Ndoy for Kalimuedo for $26 million. Yeah, they've been smashing the money ah in recent days. But the reality is, as is now being born, is that Nuno's and Maranakis' relationship has broken down.
00:04:03
Nick Britten
And in the last few hours, reports have emerged from spain era from Italy rather suggesting that Nuno's going to get sacked.
00:04:11
Nick Britten
And very recently, in the last few minutes, in the last few minutes, Nuno has been talking about this in his press conference, head of the Palace game on Sunday.
00:04:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Looks like it.
00:04:23
Nick Britten
and And, well, he's essentially saying, yeah, there's no smoke without fire. Now, that is not what you'd expect managers to say when we're...
00:04:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's... yes
00:04:34
Nick Britten
Yeah, so there's obviously something in this, Ken. There's obviously something in this.
00:04:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's that no no doubt. Just just to recap what what was actually said by Nuno in the news conference. I've always had a very good relationship with the owner. Last season, we were very close, spoke on a daily basis.
00:04:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
This season, it's not so well between us. I've always believed that dialogue is important because my concern is the squad and the season we have ahead of us. Our relationship has changed. We're not as close.
00:05:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
When he was asked if... His relationship with Manuco said changed. Nuno said, it's not good. I think everybody at club should be together, but this is not the reality.
00:05:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
That is, that's strong stuff. from a manager to their chairman. And we know what Maranakis is like. You know, he's not going to take that, just take that on the chin.
00:05:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's going to come out swinging as well. I just think this, I'd be very surprised if Espiritu Santo is the manager by Christmas. What do you think?
00:05:34
Nick Britten
Well, reports already emerging in some of the tabloids that so they're lining up at Antipostocoglu. I struggle to see... Well, I've got two hats on with it, to be honest with you, Ken. As a journalist and pundit and a podcaster, I struggle to see how...
00:05:55
Nick Britten
This can be good for Forrest. Nuno's been their best manager, arguably since like Brian Clough in the 80s. He's done an amazing job with them. He's taken them from nowhere, from relegation candidates to playing in Europe, playing Europa League and having an incredibly high finish in the Premier League. To

Transfer News and Predictions

00:06:14
Nick Britten
lose him would be utterly ridiculous.
00:06:18
Nick Britten
And it would be a real b blow to Forrest. It really would. Just when you feel that they have they had taken that next step in their progression to cement themselves as you know a very, very regular team in the Premier League that's pushing to play in Europe.
00:06:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
They look great. They look great last weekend. it's it's Obviously, it's a developing story. ah But, you know watch this space because it it looks like there's no smoke without fire on that particular issue.
00:06:41
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:06:47
Nick Britten
yeah yeah I should say like i should the other the other hat I'm wearing is a Derby County supporter's hat, and I find it all very very hilarious and watched with an enormous amount
00:06:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just to let you know how...
00:06:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sorry, Nick.
00:06:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, high five complete strangers on the way home today. So that's that's that bit of news. There's also another bit of breaking news. It looks like Man United aren't finished in the transfer window.
00:07:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
looks like they may have an interest in the ah Belgian keeper Semmel Amas from Royal Antwerp.
00:07:08
Nick Britten
you.
00:07:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah You predicted that they were going to go dipping in again to the transfer market for a goalkeeper. Looks like that is going to happen.
00:07:26
Nick Britten
It's no great surprise. I mean, Inanna has been under quite a lot of pressure. He didn't have a great season last season. He's missed pre-season because of injury. He was fit to play in the opening game last week, but wasn't selected. Instead, Alte Bayadir came in.
00:07:47
Nick Britten
Bayon Deer, and he had a bit of a stinker and he was at fault for the only goal of the game as Man United lost at home to Arsenal. So it doesn't surprise me at all that they're now looking at bringing another another goalkeeper in.
00:08:00
Nick Britten
I don't think Unana is up to the standard that Manchester United need to be if they're going to really kick on and get up to where they expect to be, which is pushing for honours and pushing for a top four place.
00:08:12
Nick Britten
And I'm afraid Bayon did, didn't do himself any favours either last week. So no great surprise in this. Sorry.
00:08:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I think that's right. So the format today, everybody, we just wanted to bring you that breaking news. That is one of the reasons why you tune in to us every day, because we're right on top of the news as it's happening around the Premier League. So that's the hot news in terms of what's happening at Forest.
00:08:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
And as Nuno Espiritu Santo knows, If footballer pays to get your team selection right, and it does it here at Global Sports Podcast Network, which, of course, the daily Premier League podcast is a big part of, we spend a lot of time selecting our delivery partner.

00:09:10
Nick Britten
yeah
00:09:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
There are 10 of them as normal. thought what might be useful is to run through each of those games, starting with tonight's West Ham-Chelsea game. Get your predictions, Nick. I'll give you my predictions. Where do you think the game's going to be won and lost?
00:09:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think of the chances of each of the teams? And what will the result be? And we'll review this during the course of next week. So firstly, West Ham v Chelsea, what you reckon, Nick?
00:09:40
Nick Britten
Well, West Ham don't have a great record against Chelsea. They've only won once in the last seven games against them. ah One draw, five defeats in that. And they've started the season pretty poorly. they had ah They had a really poor opening game last week, losing away at Sunderland 3-0, which is not the way you want to start season. and um Graham Potter, I think, is already under a bit of pressure. We haven't really seen much of a manager bounce since he came in. So this is a big game for them today.
00:10:08
Nick Britten
Chelsea weren't great against Palace last Sunday in a 0-0 draw. they They are coming off obviously off the back of winning the club world championship. ah did They did rack up 19 shots against Palace last week. And a lot of their're they're putting a lot of emphasis on their forward play.
00:10:27
Nick Britten
Look, Chelsea haven't failed to score in their opening two games since 1995. They do tend tend to hit the back of the net early in the seasons. I expect them to do that today. I think they'll be too strong for West Ham pretty much all over the pitch.
00:10:41
Nick Britten
I really do. And unless West Ham come out all guns blazing, I think it could be a very long evening for them. So in terms of predictions, I'm going West Ham nil, too.
00:10:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
the
00:10:50
Nick Britten
going West Ham nil, Chelsea too.
00:10:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
OK, so you actually got a score. OK, that's good. was It was a way you win. um Yeah, similar, similar. West Ham were really anemic, I thought, in the first game of the season. I didn't think Chelsea were that special either.
00:11:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Pretty quiet performance. I was expecting much more from Chelsea in the first game the season, given who they who they've got. They seemed to be buying everybody over summer. much ah That said, if we just look purely at potential, West Ham don't have any and Chelsea have plenty.
00:11:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I just think eventually quality and talent going to show through. So I'm with you. I'm not sure. It's really a question of whether Chelsea are going to walk away with her with a victory or it's going to be a draw. Can't see West Ham winning.
00:11:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I am going for ah draw.
00:11:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
But a low scoring draw. I don't think Chelsea are going to score in many. I'm going for a 0-0-1-1. A draw. Okay. Man City Spurs, Nick.
00:11:55
Nick Britten
Right. So Man City start season very, very well. In fact, both teams started well last week. Tottenham had a good 3-0 win against Burnley. Man City looked terrific. I thought they looked really, really sharp.
00:12:06
Nick Britten
And um home advantage, I think, you know, will tell here. Yeah. If you think since think back to the start of April, Man City have picked up more points than anybody else in the Premier League.
00:12:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
you
00:12:21
Nick Britten
Yeah, and they haven't lost a game since then. So, in the last 10, they've lost in 10. They've won eight in them. drawn two in them. Tottenham, on the other hand, they've won two of their last four games at the Etihad. They do like going there. It's not it's not ah an unhappy hunting ground ah for them.
00:12:34
Nick Britten
and But I think Man City are going to be strong this season. I think they will mount a serious challenge for the title. And I think they were going to be too strong for Tottenham at home. I think it should be good, entertaining, pretty open game. But Haarlem was right back on form last week. And that's always ah the danger signal, isn't it, to Tottenham?
00:12:52
Nick Britten
So I'm going to go for a 3-1 Manchester City city victory.
00:12:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very good. ah Yeah, hard to disagree with any of that. thought Man City were one of the most, perhaps the most impressive team last year in the opening and round of games away way from home. 4-0, wasn't it? Was it 4-1?
00:13:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Was it Wolves?
00:13:08
Nick Britten
Yeah, Formula 8-1 against Wolves here. guess well so
00:13:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely, absolutely played them off the park. ah so much So much movement. They were so fluid, lots of width. Stretched the opposition, played through Harland looking like Harland of old.
00:13:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah they just looked unstoppable. Spurs, obviously, much improved than then under Postacoglu. I'd be very surprised, by the way, as an aside, if Postacoglu ends up in a forest. Very surprised, but it might happen.
00:13:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I mean, I can imagine in that too much in that relationship.
00:13:40
Nick Britten
Yeah, that's going to last about 10 minutes, isn't it?
00:13:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maranakis and Postacoglu.
00:13:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and and I mean, look, I mean, one's Greek and one's presumably Turkish with Posta Koglian. I mean, that that's going to be a riot. Anyway, getting back onto the Man City Spurs game. Yeah, Spurs look better, but, that you know, it doesn't matter if they if they were better at the of this season.
00:14:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's an unsurmountable summit that they're going for this weekend. So I'm not going to give you a score. I'm not clever enough to do that, but it's definitely going to be a home win. Right.
00:14:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Interesting. Two teams that finished last weekend with a defeat, but perhaps in quite different circumstances. Bournemouth against Wolves. What reckon?
00:14:27
Nick Britten
Bournemouth were quite impressive, weren't they, against Liverpool? I thought they played well. There was that period of the game where they came from 2-0 down ah to draw to make it 2-2 before Liverpool scored a couple of late goals and showed plenty of promise. I thought like they did well.
00:14:40
Nick Britten
Yeah, they did well. Wolves, on the other hand, ah didn't, quite frankly. They were blown away by Manchester City. Bournemouth generally have a good start at home. They're a good home team.
00:14:54
Nick Britten
They've not lost in any of their previous five opening games of the season since they've been in the Premier League.
00:14:59
Nick Britten
And they've also won three of the last five games against Wolves. Although, strangely, all of those three have come away from home at Molyneux. So... I think Bournemouth's home form is generally good. I don't think Wolves have really got going yet. I still think they need more players through the door. They still need to add to them before the end of the transfer window. i was quite disappointed in them last week.
00:14:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:15:19
Nick Britten
I don't really see them getting any out of this game. So I'm going to go for a 2-0 win to Bournemouth.
00:15:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, again, pretty much agree with that. Was impressed with Bournemouth, particularly impressed with Semenyo. Looks a really good player. ah looked Looked absolutely on it.
00:15:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of course, he was he was given he was given every opportunity to to really...
00:15:41
Nick Britten
And I think that's a good thing.
00:15:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah turn it on last week when he was so horribly racially abused.
00:15:46
Nick Britten
I think that's a good thing.
00:15:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he had a fantastic afternoon.
00:15:50
Nick Britten
I think that's good thing.
00:15:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
think that will continue. I'm seriously thinking about Semenyu in my fantasy football league team.
00:15:53
Nick Britten
I think that's a good thing. I think that's good thing. I think that's a good thing.
00:15:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nick, you might want to consider doing that as well, sitting in your bottom league.
00:15:59
Nick Britten
think that's a
00:16:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Semenyu looks great.
00:16:02
Nick Britten
good thing.
00:16:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wolves looked very pedestrian-looking. against Man City but to be honest everybody would ah but yeah I can't see Wolves getting anything out of out of this game Wolves are on are on the slide I expected Wolves to be better this year but um I've got a feeling they're going struggle I don't think they're going down but they're going to be right down there so yeah I would agree home win for Bournemouth right
00:16:14
Nick Britten
Yeah,
00:16:30
Nick Britten
yeah I think the only the only thing Wolves have got going for them, to be fair, is that in the Premier League, they've played at the Vitality Stadium five times and they've never lost. I've never lost a way at Bournemouth in the Premier League.
00:16:41
Nick Britten
But there's a first time Premier
00:16:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's gone out in one day, isn't it?
00:16:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's gone

Promotions and Listener Engagement

00:16:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
out one day.
00:16:43
Nick Britten
League.
00:16:43
Nick Britten
Yeah, don't make that I expect that to be tomorrow.
00:16:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that day is about, is is tomorrow. um Okay, Brentford against Villa, fourth game. Two two teams that probably didn't, well, certainly Brentford, but Villa didn't really get out of last the the last game, ah perhaps what they needed to.
00:17:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
So what's your view on this one?
00:17:03
Nick Britten
They get out blocks. Well, they didn't get out of blocks against Newcastle. Newcastle dominated that first half last week. Villa were better in the second half. They didn't create much. They looked a little bit...
00:17:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
20 minutes of it. They lost concert then, didn't they? And that was that.
00:17:14
Nick Britten
Yeah. Yeah, I guess. Yes, I guess so. I guess so. ah Yeah, i was I'm expecting more from Villa this week. they just It just all looked a little bit start of season stuff last week for them. and <unk>ve They've had an extra week training. I expect them to be ah much more on it.
00:17:31
Nick Britten
ah Brentford... Bad 3-1 loss at Nottingham Forest last week, particularly because they were 3-0 down before half-time. It was a wretched start for the new manager. We've talked about Brentford on this podcast and the fact they've lost so many of their good players.
00:17:46
Nick Britten
the that Where are they at the moment? i I have tipped them, as you know, for relegation this year. think they're going to struggle with having half the team ripped out plus a manager now in charge who's never managed in the Premier League.
00:17:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:18:00
Nick Britten
But you know what? They've never lost their first home game. in a top flight season in nine years. They scored twice, at least in each of those games. So they do like playing at home earlier on in the season.
00:18:11
Nick Britten
But I think Villa, who they've won the last two to at Brentford, I think they're going to be too strong for them. I don't think it'll be a great game, but I think Villa will come out on top in a narrow 1-0 victory.
00:18:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, again, you do speak a lot of sense. I thought i thought so the first half Brentford turned up against Forrest was just abysmal. Forrest strolled it, absolutely strolled it.
00:18:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And you know forest um I don't think Forrest did the team they were last year. Honestly, I don't think Forrest will end up more than about 14th, particularly after what's gone on today.
00:18:41
Nick Britten
Yes, indeed.
00:18:46
Nick Britten
yes indeed
00:18:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
That could be...
00:18:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah so So I think yeah what we've got to ask ourselves is, are we going to get a reaction from Brentford? And i don't think we are going get a reaction from Brentford. I have no faith in them.
00:18:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
If I was Villa, i this is the game you wanted. Away at Brentford, it's a great get-right game. After that performance against Newcastle, which was disappointing, you need a get-right game. This is your get-right game.
00:19:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah You've got to go to Brentford and you've got to put on a performance. Villa, I think in my estimation, are a cho ah a top six, top seven, top eight team. Brentford are a bottom two team. you've got to go They've got to go there and absolutely play them off the park. I think they can do that. i think it' will be i I think it won't be a close game. I think i think Villa will dominate it.
00:19:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't what score will be, but I've got a very solid away victory for Aston Villa. Fifth one, and then we'll take a break. Burnley against Sunderland. Two of the promoted teams, but two promoted teams with very different outcomes last weekend.
00:19:48
Nick Britten
Yes, Burnley were turned over very comfortably by Tottenham. And I think they are pretty universally, outside of the ah the city of Burnley, they are universally expected to get relegated again this season.
00:20:01
Nick Britten
Sunderland had a cracking start to to the season, a beating a 3-0 win against West Ham.
00:20:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:20:08
Nick Britten
Those goals coming in the second half. However, however... Burnley's home form last season in the Championship was absolutely brilliant. Now, we know a lot of that was down to James Trafford, who's no longer there. He's now Manchester City.
00:20:24
Nick Britten
But generally, their home form was awesome. And they've got to replicate that if they have got any chance whatsoever of staying up this season.
00:20:35
Nick Britten
It's a slim chance, but it does solely rest on their home form. they've got to They've just got to get this right. So... Yeah, Sunderland, we don't know what their away form is going to be like. Again, they're another one where the stadium of light is going to be very, very important.
00:20:48
Nick Britten
I think this will be ah think this would be a very, very tight game. I think it'll be a low scoring game to the point where I'm predicting there won't be any goals whatsoever and it's going to be a nil-nil draw.
00:20:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, my word. we didn't We didn't rehearse this, but I'm exactly um exactly on on that with you. The only thing is, this is a championship game from last year, of course, and Burnley were a better team than Sunderland year.
00:21:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
and ah something ma it ah And therefore, but they they score no goals. They concede no goals either. But of course, a lot's happened. A lot of water's gone under the bridge since the championship game.
00:21:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, Burnley were terrible last week. Sunderland were great last week. I was very impressed with Sunderland. they're very impressed with the with the energy. Very impressed with very verympressed with the manager. yeah ah Very impressed with ah what they what they brought to the game.
00:21:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they brought an enthusiasm and and an energy and a belief that that yeah it would surprised me quite honestly. So ah
00:21:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can't see Burnley winning. I can see Sunderland winning, but I think it will be a draw. And I think you're right. I think it will be a nil-nil. I just think defences are going to win the day. Both of those teams, particularly Burnley, the defences are way stronger than the attack.
00:22:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm going for a draw as well.
00:22:04
Nick Britten
Thank

Match Previews and Predictions

00:23:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
With those important sponsor messages, we can now get ah back onto the yeah the last five games of the weekend. ah The last one on Saturday, which is Arsenal-Leeds. What an interesting, intriguing game that is.
00:23:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Arsenal didn't really...
00:23:44
Nick Britten
a b
00:23:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Even though they won handsomely, well, they won, um it never felt like they were in control against United. And Leeds looked impressive the other night.
00:23:54
Nick Britten
and
00:23:56
Nick Britten
Yeah. I don't know if that's going to have any bearing on a game like this, if I'm brilliant. I think it will be a pretty comfortable home win for for Arsenal. They're unbeaten in the last 14 meetings with Leeds in all competitions, winning 12 out of those.
00:24:12
Nick Britten
I just think they like playing promoted sides. I mean, they've not lost in 42 attempts against a newly promoted side when they played them at home.
00:24:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's
00:24:20
Nick Britten
And I mean, look, I think Arsenal will be too good. I think, and the hot news hot news, Ken, off the stone here. I think with Eberre Ciesi signing, which is now looks like it's going to be confirmed any time soon, he won't be available for tomorrow. But I think they've got a title-winning side now.
00:24:37
Nick Britten
I think that might be the missing bit, which will make them challenge Liverpool for the title. And when I say challenge, I mean actually properly challenge, not finishing second, you know, 10 points behind.
00:24:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Can you see them doing it away at Sunderland on a Tuesday night?
00:24:52
Nick Britten
I can, yeah. yeah i think i think the sign is I think the signings they've made this summer are yeah with Goikres up front, proper striker, Eze on one side, you've got Saka on the other, you've got support from Madweke.
00:25:06
Nick Britten
They're attacking, there and you've now got Declan Rice playing a much more forward role as well.
00:25:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:25:11
Nick Britten
Their attacking capabilities are the best they've ever been under Arteta. And let's face it, it's not been the defence that's been the problem. It's been their own defence.
00:25:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not a bad defence, is it? Yeah.
00:25:21
Nick Britten
Yeah, exactly. Inability to score enough goals.
00:25:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:25:25
Nick Britten
I think they might have solved it. I think the Eze signing is going to be massive for them. Anyway, on to the game tomorrow. I think it'll be pretty comfortable. Leeds, yeah, Leeds were pretty good the other night. and I don't think anybody could argue that much against the 1-0 win against Everton.
00:25:40
Nick Britten
And going to Arsenal is a different, completely different kettle of fish, i'm afraid. I think Arsenal will win this quite comfortably. I'm going for three
00:25:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, again, agreed. For all those reasons, it's it's a pretty clear home victory, I think. Arsenal look like they've got quite a lot of balance. They're going to need to step the game up. i think I think what we might see in this game is quite a quiet first 30 minutes.
00:26:04
Nick Britten
I think that's a good question.
00:26:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like an overhang from the game against United, and I think they'll get into the stride after that, and I think it will be... A comfortable victory. Right. Sunday.
00:26:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Game that suddenly got some added meaning. Palace against Forest. ah We love Palace. You love Palace because you're they're your team. You hate Forest.
00:26:27
Nick Britten
and
00:26:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I presume you go for a Forest 2-0 victory.
00:26:28
Nick Britten
to that two Well, it's the battle of the unhappy managers, as it turns out. ah Initially, it was one unhappy manager versus a happy one, but the last half hour has blown that right out of the water.
00:26:41
Nick Britten
So you've got on one in one bench Oliver Glasner, who is increasingly getting increasingly fed up at Palace's lack of transfer activity and preparedness for this season. He made some quite stinging comments last night.
00:26:54
Nick Britten
ah after the Europa League conference game, and which they won 1-0, by the way. And obviously they're going to lose Eze. That's not expected. Sorry, that's not unexpected. ah think Glazer's point is we knew this was going to happen, and yet we just haven't prepared for it.
00:27:08
Nick Britten
We haven't earmarked people. we've got yeah He's very much, and he he speaks a lot about this, by the way, he's very much a manager who does things by plan. He thinks ahead massively. He's not reactionary.
00:27:22
Nick Britten
Some managers are. He's not reactionary. He thinks ahead, plans ahead, and nothing works in his mind, in his view. if and less it's part of the plan which is there in place.
00:27:33
Nick Britten
So Eze going and not having a ready-made replacement is not, in his view, a plan. And I think he's broadly unhappy. um The other issue you've got with Palace, of course, Other players, when they see players like Eze leaving and Alise the year before, they kind of go, well, you know, is the grass greener somewhere else? Or if you're if you're Mateta, you're thinking, blimey, who's going to supply me the bullets to score these goals?
00:27:56
Nick Britten
And so it's a real weird, I mean we look, we've talked about Palace before.
00:27:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:28:01
Nick Britten
It's a really weird situation whereby they've come off their best season ever because they've won the FA Cup. Then they've won the Community Shield. And yet it feels like a place in a bit of flux. when it actually their And their form is brilliant, by the way.
00:28:14
Nick Britten
They've not lost a game in ages. And they're a hard team to play against and a hard team to beat. But there is a sense that it could just about be on the verge of unravelling pretty soon.
00:28:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:28:29
Nick Britten
Because if you've got an unhappy manager, if you don't have the players, if you're selling your best players, it's never a good look. And they're going to progress, this is not the way to do it. So you've got that on one side and then sitting in the other dugout,
00:28:42
Nick Britten
you got Nuno, who, as we now know, has fallen out with the with the chairman. So they might want to swap notes about their respective chairmen during the game. Who knows? ah But on the pitch, you know Forrest obviously comes to winning against Brentford last week. Palace, very good.
00:28:56
Nick Britten
0-0 draw against Chelsea. almost Almost nicked all three points. But Eze's free kick was disallowed.
00:29:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a better team long periods.
00:29:04
Nick Britten
ah They were the better team for long periods. I think this will be a tight game. I think this will be very, very, very close. um The last four games between the sides of South Park have all finished level.
00:29:17
Nick Britten
And I think a draw is is arguably the yeah the the sensible result here. ah So i'm going to go for a 3-1 Palace win because I can't do anything else, Ken.
00:29:29
Nick Britten
Thank you.
00:29:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, you nearly had me then. You nearly he had me. i thought I thought, oh, here we go. ah Because i am going for a draw. ah As you say, they're two unsettled teams, really.
00:29:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mean, Eze is a big loss. Bruno, he won't be playing tomorrow. Forrest.
00:29:47
Nick Britten
Well, no, he didn't play last night.
00:29:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
You all
00:29:48
Nick Britten
i mean but interesting interesting Interestingly, Glashner's comments, a lot of his comments last night were, he turned up at the game expecting Eze to play because that's what he was, that's what had been agreed and blah, blah, blah, blah.
00:29:59
Nick Britten
la
00:29:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
right?
00:29:59
Nick Britten
And he only found out, you know, a couple hours before kickoff that he wasn't. That's no good for a manager's coach, is it?
00:30:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
he's not He's not going to like that. ah But I do think Forrest, I think they're going to... When you get these kind of issues, however much you say, well, the players just concentrate on playing, it's not as simple as that.
00:30:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not as simple as that. And I actually think Forrest definitely pivoted
00:30:26
Nick Britten
I think
00:30:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
around the Leicester game, and it didn't pivot well. And I think that pivot is going to continue. That said, know, they went and so went and scored three in the first half of the first game of the season.
00:30:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
they've got They've got some good players, really good players. I just think this this is two teams that are extremely evenly matched.
00:30:43
Nick Britten
it's a very important thing.
00:30:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Palace parts are very good. They don't lose many. Nor the Forest. I've got it down as a draw, but I could quite easily...
00:30:53
Nick Britten
yeah well Yeah, and as I say, they've drawn the last four games, so why why wouldn't they draw there their fifth?
00:30:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
could quite easily... Yeah.
00:30:59
Nick Britten
This is at Selhurst, by the way.
00:31:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:31:01
Nick Britten
Yeah, look, if I wasn't who I was, then I'll probably be predicting a draw as well. But, yeah, there we are.
00:31:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good. Well, it's good that we disagree on a couple of them anyway. So that's good news. Right.
00:31:10
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:31:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got to whistle through the last three and we won't be able to whistle with the last one of them.
00:31:11
Nick Britten
Listen.
00:31:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Evan Brighton, Evan looked a bit a bit stale to me.
00:31:17
Nick Britten
ah
00:31:20
Nick Britten
Yeah, I agree. and And Brighton, I thought, were unlucky to concede a very, very, very, very late goal against Fulham, which denied them a 1-0 victory. Ended up one each.
00:31:32
Nick Britten
This is not an interesting game, I don't think, other than the fact it's the first game at Everton's new stadium.
00:31:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:31:38
Nick Britten
The Hill-Dickinson Stadium doesn't really roll off the tongue, does it?
00:31:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Oh, it's going to become famous, isn't it?
00:31:43
Nick Britten
But for what?
00:31:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's like Stadium of Light, isn't it? the Stadium of Light or Wembley or the Hill Dickinson Stadium. People, no.
00:31:52
Nick Britten
No, it won't. ah Yeah, an even game between two pretty even sides. um I think the emotion of Everton playing at home for the first time in their new stadium will absolutely help them because I think Brighton are probably a better side.
00:32:05
Nick Britten
ah Brighton will enjoy it because they like to go and play football and in in nice stadiums and all of that. So I think given given the um given that little impetus that Everton would have, normally normally I think I'll be looking at a Brighton win on this, but I think all the emotion going around it and the enthusiasm and the all of that kind of stuff ah will will give Everton something out of this game. So I'm going to go for one-all draw.
00:32:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay. By the way, what's your view on Grealish going to heaven? think that's good for him?
00:32:33
Nick Britten
It's a great move. It's a great move for Grealish and it's a great move for Everton because he was he is in there.
00:32:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:32:39
Nick Britten
in there is still a decent player. No, I don't think he's ah don't think he's England level player.
00:32:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:32:44
Nick Britten
I really don't and I never have done. ah bodies But he's better than not playing. So I think going to a club, the level of Everton, where it where he's a big fish in a small pond, he can get going again. Hopefully, David Moyes will give him a bit more freedom to play and he'll rediscover that form. Because if he rediscovers that form, then...
00:33:05
Nick Britten
He'll be a real threat for Everson. He'll be a really, really good signing. If he doesn't rediscover the form, well, then you're looking at another Dele Alli, aren't you? Where he'll just sort of disappear from the game.
00:33:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:33:15
Nick Britten
But it's a really good opportunity for him. And I think it's a smart move. I think it's the right level, lower Premier League level. I think it's the right level for him to be playing ah at at moment. And the best of luck to
00:33:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i've I've got the opinion he's one the more overrated players in in the Premier League.
00:33:26
Nick Britten
Yeah, I mean, he's really good. He's really good. He's really good.
00:33:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he's incredibly one-footed, easy to easy to defend against. I think his hype is massively outside his actual capabilities as player. I'm going to be very interested to see how he works out Everton.
00:33:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
If he give if it doesn't if it if if it doesn't emerge from Everton as a key player for Everton, then you know I was right all along. Brighton I like, I like Brighton I think they're going to have a very good season I think they're going to win away at Everton All we need to All they've got to know is Say to Tchaikovsky
00:33:55
Nick Britten
I don't
00:34:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello k Nick
00:34:17
Nick Britten
know what's happened.
00:34:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
yes You disappeared. You disappeared. But we're still recording, so we're fine. But that's just a little gap in our... Something happened there with the internet. Tarkovsky, just don't lean towards the ball.
00:34:30
Nick Britten
Yeah, exactly.
00:34:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Don't lean towards the Keep your arms behind you and don't lean.
00:34:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fulham Man United, Nick.
00:34:38
Nick Britten
Yeah, i'm I'm looking forward to an entertaining game here. Fulham, as I say, grabbed a last-minute goal against Brighton. That'll give them me a little bit of confidence. They need to win a game. They didn't win towards the end of last season.
00:34:48
Nick Britten
They need to kind of get back on on track. Otherwise, they are at risk of just kind of going off the boil massively after a couple of seasons. ah Marco Silva's a great manager.
00:35:00
Nick Britten
I think yeah know ah i think he's the he's definitely the man for the job. They haven't done a lot in the transfer market. um So yeah it's difficult to judge where Fulham are at moment.
00:35:11
Nick Britten
Man United, we thought, improved massively against Arsenal. It wasn't hard from last season, frankly. I thought they'd play well. I expect him to carry on that. I expect them to be good. I expect them be an attacking threat this season.
00:35:23
Nick Britten
I'm looking forward to an entertaining game here. And I'm going to go for an entertaining draw.
00:35:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, can't disagree too much with that. Fulham always play with no fear at home, particularly. They they you know they ah outperform essentially their their talent levels, I think.
00:35:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Man United look so much better than last year. because At last, they've got a line up front. So, yeah. I mean, United were a bit this bit unlucky to lose against Arsenal. If they lose this one, there's going to be there's going to be a lot of gnashing of teeth Old Trafford.
00:35:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah because that'll be a horrible start for them. I don't think they will lose it, but i equally, I think they'll win. So again, i would agree with that. I think I'm looking at a 1-1 there. i think I think it will be be a good game to watch.
00:36:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good good game for the neutral.
00:36:11
Nick Britten
Thank you.
00:36:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Two good teams. Kind of canceling each other out, but I think it'll end up 1-1. Right, Monday night. It's the Isak Gate. it's it's the It's a big one. The boat one with all the spice.
00:36:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle against Liverpool. I mean, this is this has got all the ingredients of an absolute classic, hasn't it? They're always classics, Newcastle and Liverpool, aren't they?
00:36:37
Nick Britten
Well, there's great... There are two... Yeah, the two games of great spice. We didn't mention, by the way, we ought to mention, there could be a little bit of added spice to the Palace-Forrest game on the basis that Forrest have taken Palace's place in the Europa League.
00:36:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Correct.
00:36:49
Nick Britten
I have that my notes, but don't know why I didn't mention that.
00:36:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they dubbed him in. They dubbed him into UEFA, didn't they? They raised him with UEFA, Forrest did. Marinakis, boo.
00:36:57
Nick Britten
So, Forrest... Yeah, so that that might... that that I had that in my notes, which is one of the reasons why i think Palace going to win the game. think they'll just be extra fired up. They will not want to leave Palace.
00:37:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll dub about that.
00:37:10
Nick Britten
They want to leave Forrest to leave Solhurst with anything out that game. But yes, all eyes turn to St. James' is on Monday night. the It's National Alexander-Isak Day. And...
00:37:21
Nick Britten
Well, the atmosphere of the atmosphere at St. James' Park is amazing at the best of times. It's going to be febrile on Monday night. It's going to be absolutely brilliant. It'll be an electric ah atmosphere.
00:37:35
Nick Britten
And Isaac's not even signed for Liverpool. He's not he's not he's not even there.
00:37:40
Nick Britten
So it's not even like he's going to turn out on play. But just the whole bad blood about him.
00:37:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
No?
00:37:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did you think they were invading before the game on the pitch?
00:37:46
Nick Britten
yeah Oh, and the funny thing is about this, and if you're Liverpool, Liverpool actually haven't done anything wrong particularly. It's not like, I mean, they've they put a couple of bids in that are quite low.
00:37:58
Nick Britten
But beyond that, it's all been Isaac doing this off his own back. And by the by, by the by, the Geordies won't, they won't welcome Liverpool with open arms.
00:38:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah And your prediction
00:38:08
Nick Britten
That's for sure. So I'm really, really looking forward to what I expect to be a terrific atmosphere, 120 mile an hour game of football and and high excitement and high excitement.
00:38:25
Nick Britten
As to the game itself, well, Newcastle can't beat Liverpool. They haven't beaten them in 17 attempts. And they just find it a real, you know, just just a very difficult opponent, a bit of a bogey side.
00:38:37
Nick Britten
ah Liverpool are unbeaten in the last seven trips up to St James' Park. And they've got the firepower to win this game. And I expect them to win this game. I thought Newcastle played really well against Aston Villa last week, but just simply couldn't put the ball in the net.
00:38:51
Nick Britten
They haven't been able to rectify that in the six, seven days ah before that. They haven't signed a striker, so they're likely to go with Anthony Gordon again up top. It's not going to be enough, I don't think.
00:39:02
Nick Britten
I do think they're going score because I think the crowd will demand it. I think they that atmosphere will be there, but I think Liverpool are going to be too strong. So I'm going to go for a Newcastle 1, Liverpool 3.
00:39:14
Nick Britten
Of course, Ekitiki will lead the line for Liverpool and he was a player who was meant to be going for Newcastle until Liverpool hijacked the deal very, very late in the day.
00:39:26
Nick Britten
So there's lots of rumbling, mate. There's lots of rumbling going on in this game. But I think football-wise, Liverpool will be too good.
00:39:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think you're right. I think you just have to look at what's up front on either team. Gordon versus Etikite, Salah, Gakpo. I mean, it's it's just, it's night and day.
00:39:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
It won't even be close in my, there'll be a lot of noise, but it won't even be close. ah Liverpool will go up there and and absolutely do a job on Newcastle. I can see it being 3-0. I can see it being 4-0.
00:39:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Liverpool look decent. ah that they went They went Man City rush last week, but yeah so they do need to wake up. They did well to come back, I think, from Bournemouth pulling it back to 2-2. I think i showed a bit of character on Liverpool's part.
00:40:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
They looked like champions when they did that, even though was the first game the season.
00:40:12
