Introduction to the Podcast

00:00:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
A very warm welcome to this episode of the Daily Premier League podcast. It is Monday the 18th of August. We've seen we are digesting the first games of the season. We're going to be going through all that kind of stuff and some talking points that emerged from the weekend. My

Premier League Weekend Overview

00:00:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
name is Ken Davis.
00:00:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I am joined as ever these days ah by my esteemed colleague, the yeah
00:00:37
Nick Britten
Thanks.
00:00:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
The person we all look up to really in relation to football punditry, it's none other than Nicholas Britton. How you doing, Nick?
00:00:49
Nick Britten
I'm very well, thank you very much indeed. Very pleased to be here, as always, Ken. Very pleased to be here. Lots to get through on what was very busy and id indeed very interesting first Premier League weekend of the season. there's one more game to come, which is actually comes after we record this podcast. Leeds United are playing Everton tonight, but everybody else has had a game.
00:01:07
Nick Britten
So
00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.

Manchester Teams' Performance

00:01:08
Nick Britten
be to digest what's happened.
00:01:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
going to be good. What we're going to do is kind of break this into three pieces. We're going to have look at some of the key teams. We're going to put Liverpool to one side, but we're going to look at Man City, Man United, Arsenal and Chelsea. Just to review our take on how they performed in the opening weekend.
00:01:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Opening weekends are always a bit strange, but I think we've got a sense of the yeah the new sides. And they all they all brought something different to the party, I think, and good and bad. So want to talk about those four. We're going to talk about a point that...
00:01:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, he's got it. I think it'd be a recurring theme during the season again, which is when you're not his goalkeepers. We've got to i think we've got to do a deep dive on that. And and is he going to cost them ah again this season in the way that it seemed to cost them last year?
00:01:53
Nick Britten
Thank you.
00:01:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
And finally, we're going to have a quick look at some of the villains and some of the heroes of the

Manchester City's Tactical Shifts

00:02:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
opening day. So we'll open your weekend. So before we get any further, Nick, what was your overall take of the first the first weekend of the new season?
00:02:09
Nick Britten
Well, there were no great surprises, I don't think. It broadly went to form. It's good to see certainly the promoted teams, well, one of the promoted teams at least, you know picking up a win in Sunderland when they had a pretty comfortable in the end three ni win over a West Ham.
00:02:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:02:29
Nick Britten
All the big guns performed, I think, broadly, as you might expect. There were some good games yesterday. And I think, as always, think the overarching thing is often what we see at this stage of the season, where there are lots of games where teams are just trying to settle into it because they've got players who have just arrived, who they're settling in. They've got the missing players who might be on their way out.
00:02:50
Nick Britten
of the club, there's always a little bit of a transient feel to these opening sparring games of the season. I don't think really you can get a sense of anything until at least maybe four or five games in.
00:03:04
Nick Britten
But equally, it is important that teams start picking up points from the off. Often even a point on the opening day is good enough just to get you on the mark.
00:03:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:03:14
Nick Britten
But I think certainly teams like Manchester United and Tottenham, two of the great underperformers of last season, supporters are looking for an immediate return in, are we going to be better?
00:03:26
Nick Britten
Are we going to be better? And I think certainly, actually in both their cases, the answer is yes. I thought Tottenham dispatched Burnley pretty easily on Saturday, as you might expect them to do. Manchester United lost to Arsenal yesterday, but I thought played better than they played for quite some time. I thought they played...
00:03:41
Nick Britten
pretty well and we're unlucky not to come out with something from that game. So good for them. I think it's just great. Everybody's stretching their legs metaphorically and enjoying the fact that football's back.
00:03:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, indeed. By the way, when I did this, um the Daily Premier League podcast, exactly one week ago last Monday, one of the things I was looking at is which team I thought would improve most ah in the new season. It really was down to United or Tottenham.
00:04:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Both of those teams, ah for different reasons and with different results, definitely looked like they were on on the way up. But let's start across the other side of Manchester. Let's start with Man City. Man City.
00:04:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
What were your take on City? I thought they looked like the City of old. What was your ah what was your take on
00:04:27
Nick Britten
They did look like the city of old. Haaland looked like a player of old. that When he first arrived this country, i mean, he looked at he was absolutely superb.
00:04:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah.
00:04:34
Nick Britten
i thought he ran the back line ragged. and Interesting to see that Pep Guardiola said after the game that he still thinks that his squad is too big, which is really interesting.
00:04:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:04:45
Nick Britten
i mean, I know traditionally he's worked ah with a with a ah smallish squad. um You would think after the kind of troubles they had last season, they did have a poor season by their own standards.
00:04:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:58
Nick Britten
And they've come out and they've walked all over walls, frankly. They were just way too good.
00:05:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:05:03
Nick Britten
for wolves and Wolves are a team that, as we talked about on Saturday's podcast, immediately after the you know immediately after the first couple of games of

Manchester United vs Arsenal Review

00:05:10
Nick Britten
the season, Wolves are a team who i expect to struggle this season. I think they'll be down down at the bottom. They've lost two or three of their better players and they're going to struggle to replace them.
00:05:21
Nick Britten
Man City, I just thought, were were it was a bit of a walk in park for them. They were great. They'll have far bigger tests to come. And bear in mind on Saturday, they were without... Rodri Stil, who's still making his way back to injury.
00:05:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
No,
00:05:33
Nick Britten
he They were without Phil Foden, who, although he had a ah ah poor season last year, um we know what a good player is. Guardiola, their best defender. Kovacic, none these players were playing, and yet they still looked excellent.
00:05:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought they were outstanding.
00:05:48
Nick Britten
So...
00:05:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
They were all back up to the levels they were at when Rodri was in his pomp, I think. And if you've got if you've got those kind of strengths to add, i mean, dick City are going to run Liverpool really, really, really close this year.
00:05:56
Nick Britten
Yeah, I think Mark.
00:06:04
Nick Britten
what i'm What I'm most interested about Manchester City this season is seeing how they play. Because there's generally been ah kind of there was a lot of narrative last year suggesting that the the days of that kind of Pep Guardiola, Tiki Taka, pass, pass, pass, pass are coming to an end. And teams were looking to play a lot more directly.
00:06:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:23
Nick Britten
And actually, there were certainly signs of that towards the end of last season. And certainly signs to it signs of it at the start of this season. you in the opening games on Saturday where it were teams were kicking off and just pumping the ball into the corner to try and gain a win.
00:06:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think this is a general theme we're going to see this year. I think i think we are going to see more more more directness generally. I just think we're moving that way.
00:06:40
Nick Britten
that That's only a kind of return Yeah, I think you're right. And that's only returned to kind of how it was. Football, we know.
00:06:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, psychical.
00:06:47
Nick Britten
look we know we Yeah, we've been around this game a long, long time, Ken. And it is cyclical. and Things that were seen as revolutionary and new and extraordinary, eventually yeah know things go back to how they were and things yeah yeah things start happening in games and in terms of tactics and stuff like that.
00:07:05
Nick Britten
And those who are new to the game, new-ish, go, oh, this is amazing change. And everybody else just goes, no, no, this is what it was like in the 1980s.
00:07:11
Nick Britten
We've been there.
00:07:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:12
Nick Britten
We've done that. And I think, i wonder and i so I wonder how Man City are going to play and whether they are actually going to be a bit more because I think they will.
00:07:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:07:19
Nick Britten
I think we saw it with them last year out of necessity, but I think they will this year. And it was a great start for them. And arbi we need to have a really competitive Premier League this year. I don't think it was that competitive last year.
00:07:31
Nick Britten
Liverpool won it at a bit of a canter. But we need Arsenal to have a good season. We need Man City to have a good season. And we need people to challenge Liverpool again because they will obviously be the team to catch. So a good start for Man City and very, very much looking forward to seeing how they

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace Analysis

00:07:45
Nick Britten
get on this year.
00:07:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, there's three or four things that just jumped out to me watching that game. ah City just looked ah really slick in terms of the interchange of passing. I thought they had lots of runners. They had some great width.
00:08:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah there's just And very impressed with Bob, by the way, Oscar Bob. I thought he he had he had a great first game. so And Harland looks back on form and he looks full of confidence and he just looks like a brute up front. So Wolves, I thought, looked a bit poor, a few mistakes. Went without the chances. And, you know, they they definitely had some chances. Of course, they were at home.
00:08:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Trafford's going to be another great acquisition for City as well, goal.
00:08:26
Nick Britten
Well, this is it
00:08:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah There's just a lot to like about Man City.
00:08:30
Nick Britten
I agree. I think Trafford's a great acquisition. And it's interesting that he played on Saturday and interesting to see where Edison sits because Edison's not going to be prepared to be a number two.
00:08:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:08:40
Nick Britten
Pep Guardiola after the game, as I said at the start, he's talking more and more about reducing squad size. So we we are expecting to see ah few outs in the in the next week or so before the end of the the transfer window.
00:08:53
Nick Britten
ah Nico Lewis is linked very heavily with Nottingham Forest, although he said he he doesn't want to go anywhere. He's quite happy. But Interesting to see that Guardiola is talking about a vibe. He says we can't we can't create a good vibe or an atmosphere to compete with too many players and unhappy players who are being left at home and impacting the squad.
00:09:11
Nick Britten
What he wants is a smaller squad where everybody's involved pretty much all the time and that keeps it going. And and that would suggest, when you look at the likes of Jack Grealish who's already gone to Everton, that would suggest that he's the over the last couple of years he's struggled with that part of the set-up where
00:09:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he has. He's always always been the king of the rotation. I think you could never pick a monkey know and Man City player in your fantasy football league. He's never if going to be playing or not. I think he's moving away from that.
00:09:37
Nick Britten
Yeah, yeah, I think so. And I wonder if he's just learned from last year where he had a real, there was a real struggle last year for them. And this perhaps was obviously part of, reading reading between the lines, this was part of the problem.
00:09:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it makes a lot of sense. Moving on. So Man United lost the game against Arsenal. We probably deal with Man United and Arsenal both in the same segment here. Man United lost, but I was impressed with United.
00:10:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought they were a lot more direct. thought a lot more physical. I thought it was a very encouraging performance. A lot of energy. ah I think obviously they've got a more lot more quality at the top of the pitch now.
00:10:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But I was quite impressed with the United. I know they lost the game, but i wouldn't i wouldn't despair if you're a United fan.
00:10:20
Nick Britten
No, I thought they played really well, actually. i thought they were but I thought for the vast majority of the game, they were the better side. So, Arsenal will say, well, none of that matters because we won.
00:10:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:30
Nick Britten
And there's ah there's a ah validity in that to a certain extent, but that won't carry when they play like that against better sides than Manchester United.
00:10:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:39
Nick Britten
They've got to play better.
00:10:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, great.
00:10:40
Nick Britten
and
00:10:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
39% possession, Arsenal. 61% United.
00:10:42
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:10:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right.
00:10:43
Nick Britten
And I thought they were There were periods in the game where United were just right on top of them, but they just couldn't get the ball in the back of the net.
00:10:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:10:51
Nick Britten
the The new look front three ofvan bumo of on one side of Cunha on the other. i thought Cunha was sensational. think such a good player.
00:10:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:11:00
Nick Britten
And... Sesko, when he gets fit, when he came on sub, he just looked out of it a little bit. He looked a little bit leggy. looked a bit out of touch. He had a couple of good opportunities in the box and his touch wasn't there, but that presumably will come.
00:11:13
Nick Britten
that That has to be much more powerful as a front three than anything they've had in the last three or four years.
00:11:20
Nick Britten
It just has to be. Yeah.
00:11:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, they were insipid, absolutely insipid up front last year.
00:11:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And this suddenly they've got power.
00:11:25
Nick Britten
And I thought, yeah.
00:11:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
they good they got they they got yeah real real we've got They've got pace. They've got power. They've got ah skill. you know I think it's going to revolutionise the season for for United. i think United are going to be just fine.
00:11:41
Nick Britten
Well, they were exciting to watch. And we haven't said that about Man United for the last two, three years.
00:11:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, we haven't.
00:11:45
Nick Britten
They were exciting to watch.
00:11:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, we haven't.
00:11:46
Nick Britten
and ah I think for the English game, right across the world, I think the English game benefits from a good Manchester United. You want to see Manchester United challenging for honours up the top of the table because they are that club.
00:11:59
Nick Britten
They are that club that we've all grown up with over the last 20, 30, 40 years who have been
00:12:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I
00:12:05
Nick Britten
who have been ah winning things. And it's for the good of the game, whether you like them or not, it's difference. That's not what i'm talking about. But for the good of the game, I think the Premier League needs a decent and challenging Manchester United.
00:12:16
Nick Britten
I'm not suggesting they're going this year, I think certainly the signings they've made.
00:12:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
think it makes sense.
00:12:20
Nick Britten
And actually, for the first time yesterday, you looked at the formation that Amerim wants to play week in, week out, and thought, yeah, OK, I can see how it works a bit. Because last year, you just could not see how it worked at all.
00:12:33
Nick Britten
You just couldn't see.
00:12:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, he didn't have his players.
00:12:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And whatever formation he wanted to play, and he played 3-2-4-1, he just didn't have the players to play that.
00:12:35
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:12:39
Nick Britten
yeah
00:12:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah And and yeah certainly, they had width. You've got the wing-backs going up, providing some width, providing some service for the front three. and I think it's goingnna it's gonna it's going to work well.
00:12:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Arsenal walked her away with the three points. Different kind of Arsenal. I know they were under the caution little bit. They were hanging on towards the end for certain. ah But it was ah kind of low-possession, counter-attacking kind of Arsenal.
00:13:04
Nick Britten
Well, saw this last year.
00:13:08
Nick Britten
We saw this last year, didn't we? Where I think Arteta realises that he's got a sacrifice some of that flair and glory and beautiful one-touch play just to be a little bit more resilient and dig games out and get then just get stuck in and be defensive and be prepared to do the dirty work in order to get the three points.
00:13:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:13:26
Nick Britten
And yesterday was a classic example of that where they worked unbelievably hard. I mean, we talk about Manchester United having chances and they did have chances, but so often... it they didn't score because Arsenal had like just players everywhere in the box challenging and throwing their bodies at it and blocking and kicking and, as I say, doing all that dirty work and just getting in the way. And that's that's what you've got to do. That's the nasty side of the game that you've got to be prepared to do. So if they can get this right at the top end of the pitch, and if you can get Gorka's scoring, and he came on yesterday towards the end of the game, then they've got to they've got a chance.
00:14:04
Nick Britten
They've got a real chance this.
00:14:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i wonder I wonder how many goals they've got in him, to be honest. but This was a real old-style smash-and-grab, 1-0 to the Arsenal kind of performance, wasn't it? yeah they they yeah And great in defence. I do like Arsenal defence and great Arsenal teams of the past have kind of been built on um on that defence.
00:14:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, interesting. Very difficult to judge Arsenal based based on what I thought was a very good performance by United. But they walked away with the three points. They're going to be absolutely delighted with that.
00:14:38
Nick Britten
Oh, without a doubt. Without a doubt. And so they should be, by the way, because tick off your list. Victory at Old Trafford. That's a great one to tick off your list because not, you know, I know the last year was a bit different, but generally Old Trafford is a hard place to go.
00:14:52
Nick Britten
And I think it will be a hard place to go this season.
00:14:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
It'll be a harder place. It'll be even harder place.
00:14:55
Nick Britten
It'll be a lot harder place and than than... So it doesn't matter. in look Ultimately, you don't win points for playing well. Ultimately, you don't win points for being inters entertaining. You win points by winning games.
00:15:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:15:06
Nick Britten
And it's only the league table at the end of the season that matters.
00:15:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:15:08
Nick Britten
So Arsenal won't care. you know they will address They will address the issues.
00:15:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:15:11
Nick Britten
They've got to get better. we like We all know that. But for an opening game and season to go to Old Trafford,

Crystal Palace's Prospects

00:15:16
Nick Britten
get three points, come away with a clean sheet, you can't ask for much more than that, can you?
00:15:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, it's great. I do believe, though, that actually points eventually match up with performance. And so if I was a Man United fan, I'd be pleased with that performance. I think that kind of performance, that kind of energy level, that kind of ah directness, I think, is going to set them up well. Now, what about the World Club Cup champions, Chelsea? So the game against Palace now, we know Palace are no pushovers these days, but I thought that was a pretty insipid performance by Chelsea.
00:15:50
Nick Britten
The World Club... You as well say that because nobody nobody will know that they're World Club Cup championships because nobody bothered watching it.
00:15:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
I did, I
00:15:56
Nick Britten
but but But they are. Technically, the the best club side in the world. Who would have thought it? Well, they didn't look like it yesterday, that's for sure.
00:16:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
did, and that's a talking point.
00:16:04
Nick Britten
Palace were the better side. They deserved at least a point out of it. They had a goal ruled out. Eze's freaky. I don't if you saw it, but a real powerhouse.
00:16:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
i did i did and that's a talking point
00:16:12
Nick Britten
but ah Straight through rare at a goal. But nonetheless, I thought Palace were the better side. They looked really organised. They really good. It's such a shame. I'll come on to Chelsea in just a moment. But it's such a shame for Palace that...
00:16:26
Nick Britten
that they go through these cycles where I think under Glasner, they've become such a good side and yet they are still a selling club. So you get to a point where you win an FA Cup, you get into Europe. Obviously, we've had the controversy of them being demoted from the Europa League into the conference.
00:16:39
Nick Britten
But you still think, well, you know what? They've got a brilliant chance to win this. Yet in a week's time, they're going to be without Eberhe Eze, who's going to go to Tottenham.
00:16:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
just gone.
00:16:47
Nick Britten
They're going to who's likely to go to Liverpool.
00:16:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
as
00:16:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
on
00:16:50
Nick Britten
And you just think that's such a shame because youre ever going to get a situation at Palace where you feel like they're kicking on? or they're almost just continuously running to stats.
00:16:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're not far off now, are they? hey yeah are they a cho Are they a top five or six team now?
00:17:00
Nick Britten
No,
00:17:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they're not far off that.
00:17:03
Nick Britten
they're not. But they're not going to be if they keep selling their best players.
00:17:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's very true. That's very true.
00:17:09
Nick Britten
They've got to keep their best players and buy better players if you're going to progress. But they're in a continual cycle. They to let go. Michael Alise a couple of years ago, ah or this time last year almost.
00:17:20
Nick Britten
It just feels like there are um real crossroads of their history at the moment.
00:17:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:17:26
Nick Britten
Yet the challenge of taking the next step and becoming a side that plays regularly in Europe or a side that you see regularly in the top four, five, six, seven is going to be undone by the fact they just keep having to sell their players.
00:17:41
Nick Britten
ah feel sorry
00:17:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
think so.
00:17:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's about ambition. It's very difficult to compete at the top levels. I think they've kind of given up on that, I guess, to a certain degree.
00:17:48
Nick Britten
Yeah, change which is a shame. which is shame I mean, they don't have they don't have the ground to compete.
00:17:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, they don't.
00:17:53
Nick Britten
They don't have the revenue to compete, the etc.
00:17:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
no and know
00:17:56
Nick Britten
But, you know, i think they're're they're doing such a good job. As for Chelsea, I just thought they were really really quite dull. I didn't really see anything.
00:18:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Disjointed, lack of understanding, look like they're all strangers.
00:18:03
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:18:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Nowhere near, nowhere near, miles off Liverpool, Man City.
00:18:08
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:18:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, just different league.
00:18:15
Nick Britten
I was really surprised because they've been playing competitive games all over the summer.
00:18:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:19
Nick Britten
So I thought if any team has got no excuse for looking rusty, it's Chelsea. For any team that should be hitting the ground running, it's Chelsea. And they they just didn't.
00:18:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:29
Nick Britten
I just don't think they performed. Palace made it very difficult for them tactically. But nonetheless, they'd never really look like... Dean Henderson in the goal, in the Palace goal, won't have many easier afternoons.
00:18:43
Nick Britten
He really won't.
00:18:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no.
00:18:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Finishing was woeful. Not many chances. ah Yeah, they've got West Ham away. That's going to be an interesting game next time. I mean, West Ham, we don't believe or anything.
00:18:53
Nick Britten
I don't think it will be. Yeah, I don't think it's.
00:18:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think then Chelsea need to bury West Ham next week. But on that performance...
00:19:00
Nick Britten
And they probably will. What do you make of the SA disallowed goal, by way?
00:19:05
Nick Britten
I'll tell you my take. No, no, I'll
00:19:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
a
00:19:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, you're a qualified ref, so I will be interested in your and your take on that. I thought when I saw it in real time, there's nothing wrong with it. I've just got used to ah just get used to that kind of thing, that kind of physical physical to and fro in the wall.
00:19:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I understand the rule. I understand why it's disallowed. i was surprised when it was disallowed. Let's put it that way, because I didn't see anything wrong with it in real time. What was your take on it?
00:19:33
Nick Britten
it was It was the right call. I was quite surprised. When I saw the free kick, I was quite surprised that Darren England, who was the referee, didn't move the Palace players. Because the rule is quite clear.
00:19:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:45
Nick Britten
If you've got a defensive line, there's more than three players in it, the attacking team must be at least a metre away.
00:19:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:50
Nick Britten
And they weren't. They were stood in the wall. And not only that, but as ran up, the Palace players were pushing the Chelsea players out of the way to create that gap, which hasn't
00:19:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Clearly created the gap that the ball went through. There's no gap.
00:20:00
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:20:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Went down.
00:20:01
Nick Britten
i I'm surprised, a the referee didn't move the players to start with so that the starting position was right. And B, I'm surprised he didn't just disallow the goal straight away. I'm surprised the VAR had to kind of get involved and tell him to go and have a look at the monitor.
00:20:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think the referee's going to disallow it until...
00:20:19
Nick Britten
He wasn't, na kid no, you know he wasn't. He'd given the goal. He'd given the Whether referees have just forgotten about this, but we did see it last year.
00:20:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
He didn't say anything wrong. Yeah.
00:20:25
Nick Britten
ah there was There were many infringements last year and certainly referees were telling players to get out of the way if they were standing too close. So it was deemed, it's kind of deemed as a little bit controversial. I don't think it controversial at all.
00:20:36
Nick Britten
I think the Palace players
00:20:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.

Sponsorship Segment

00:20:38
Nick Britten
broke the rules of the game and and it was right to disallow.
00:20:41
Nick Britten
It was shame, was good free kick. ah But so yeah, I thought the referee would have dealt with it a little bit quicker than than he did.
00:20:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that fair, fair point. Right, as we know in football, Pays to get your team selection right here at Global Sports Podcast Network. We spent a lot of time, a lot of time selecting our delivery partner.

00:21:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Discuss. what's ah is it is it Is it going to be there their Achilles heel again?
00:21:37
Nick Britten
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that in the next, what have we got, 11, 12 days of the transfer window, Manchester United have to go out and buy a top-class goalkeeper. They have to, because we saw Inanna.
00:21:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:21:51
Nick Britten
Inanna, by the way, Andre Inanna is a good goalkeeper. Okay, let's not let's go down on him.
00:21:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's a decent goalkeeper. i wouldn't I wouldn't pass him as good.
00:21:59
Nick Britten
He'd be good.
00:22:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, I just wouldn't.
00:22:01
Nick Britten
I think he's a good keeper who for half the Premier League teams would be good enough. ah But he's not good enough for Manchester United if they want to go back to where where they've been for vast majority of the last 40, 50 years.
00:22:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:22:17
Nick Britten
and He made a lot of mistakes last year. His stats weren't particularly good.
00:22:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
He made have a lot of mistakes the year before.
00:22:24
Nick Britten
And it's no surprise that Man United, there's a lot of rumour about Manchester United buying goalkeepers. Anyway, we get to a situation where Anana's injured over the summer, it doesn't really take part in in pre-season.
00:22:34
Nick Britten
So,
00:22:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
hes but he's is He's uninjured now. He could have played, couldn't he, at the weekend?
00:22:38
Nick Britten
He's fit. He could have played. he could have played. The reason for him not being not playing was given as because he hadn't competed in pre-season at all. He's not match fit. He's not quite ready.
00:22:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Does that matter for keepers, do you think?
00:22:50
Nick Britten
So,
00:22:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Does that matter for keepers?
00:22:54
Nick Britten
no, I don't think it is. I think if you're number one goalkeeper's fit, you're playing. It's not like he's got to run and run and run and run and get blah, blah, blah.
00:22:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, it's not going to be covering 30 kilometres, is it?
00:23:03
Nick Britten
You're playing.
00:23:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
isn it
00:23:03
Nick Britten
So, whether that's just a bit of a smokescreen for something else that's going on, We don't know. But anyway, by the by, Altair Bainder was given his chance. And um excuse me and he he he blew it in spectacular fashion because he fumbled in the the winning goal, the only goal in the game.
00:23:22
Nick Britten
And it's really interesting.
00:23:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I think that was a foul, by the way. When I saw that in real time, I've i've seen him.
00:23:26
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:23:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought it was a foul. I thought he was impeded, personally. It was an incredibly weak effort to keep the ball out, but I did i did think he was impeded. I think he was a bit unlucky on that.
00:23:38
Nick Britten
If you're going to tell me, Ken, that I've seen them given, i.e. as fouls before, nobody could disagree because you only have to look at a goalkeeper for 30 yards and you'll get a free kick. Quite wrongly, in my opinion, I thought it was good that it was given because it will give people encouragement to go and challenge goalkeepers in the same way as you challenge outfield players. Now, the rule on goalkeepers is that broadly you can challenge them as long as you don't impede their ability with their arms.
00:24:03
Nick Britten
to to do anything essentially.
00:24:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:24:05
Nick Britten
So if you're holding their arm down or put your arm over their shoulder, if you prevent the movement of their arms, that's a foul.
00:24:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:24:12
Nick Britten
But in terms of a ah physical contact, that's not a foul. We've seen over the last goodness knows how many years, any physical contact is given as a foul, which is which is wrong.
00:24:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Correct.
00:24:20
Nick Britten
It's nonsense. And i don' i don't think I don't think he was impeded. I just thought he was a bit weak and he needed to be a bit stronger.
00:24:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, incredibly weak. Incredibly weak.
00:24:27
Nick Britten
i would and when you slow when you slow down when you slow down kind of the goal, you see the as As Declan Rice is about to play the ball in from the corner, nobody's anywhere near him.
00:24:41
Nick Britten
And in those two steps that he takes, then kicks the ball, he's got players all around him. So he's not expecting, he's not but he's he's looking at it, guy as thinking, right, the ball's going to come in, I'm okay, I've got this.
00:24:52
Nick Britten
I've got clear line of vision, blah, blah, blah. and But then suddenly he's being he's been challenged. ah um He's being challenged by Arsenal players. I can't, it was the Arsenal defender, wasn't who was on him.
00:25:03
Nick Britten
And and He's not expecting it. He's not ready. He's not set up properly. And he just flaps out of it. And, and and it you know, goes in. And luckily for him, Califieri was still on the goal line to head him. The ball's going in anyway.
00:25:17
Nick Britten
Otherwise, it would have been a no goal, I think. maybe Maybe they would have given it to Declare Rice. I don't know. ah But Califieri was on the goal line. But the ball's going in.
00:25:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
i was clearly It was clearly going in.
00:25:25
Nick Britten
and
00:25:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he didn't put himself in a great position. His positioning wasn't great. He wasn't assertive. um and He was waiting for the ball to come to him rather. He wasn't going to towards the ball. And yeah, he flat.
00:25:37
Nick Britten
Well, interestingly, we saw at the other end in the second half a very identical situation where the ball is slung into right on top of David Raya and he's got Manchester United players all over him and he just punches the ball clear really well.
00:25:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, you're right about that.
00:25:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm. Mm. Mm.
00:25:51
Nick Britten
And just go, oh, hang about. That's what... that's what should have happened up the other end. That's what Bender should have done. But he was just, he was he was weak, he was passive and I was glad the goal was given because it should give encouragement for people to go.
00:26:03
Nick Britten
the The difficulty Man United have got now is every single corner they face, as long as he's playing, people are just going to absolutely crowd him.
00:26:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, absolutely. Yeah, um absolutely.
00:26:10
Nick Britten
And, you know, direction is, yeah, stick the corner all the way.
00:26:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Unrightly so. You know, soccer is about analysis and people who are going analyse that weakness, going play to it.
00:26:15
Nick Britten
Look, we've got,
00:26:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of course they are.
00:26:20
Nick Britten
100%. So they should. So we've got, look, we've got Gianluigi Donnarumma from PSG, who's rumoured to be on the market. um We've got Martinez from Aston Villa, who is said to be available, but £40 million.
00:26:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very good keeper. Great keeper.
00:26:35
Nick Britten
pounds Look, do you know what? If I'm Man United and I'm serious, genuinely, if I'm serious, I'd go and buy Martinez because he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
00:26:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:26:46
Nick Britten
He's better than Donnarumma. Donnarumma's also dodgy on crosses, by the ah I go and get Martinez and I don't care what it costs.
00:26:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, well, you know what you get with Martinez? He's played a lot of Premier League games. He's considered ah an extremely good goalkeeper. They're just not very good at selecting, choosing goalkeepers, United.
00:27:03
Nick Britten
They're not, are they? They're not.
00:27:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're not. So, yeah you've got to go with something that you've got to be fairly confident in. You can't be taking another chance on ah on on a player unused the Premier League because Premier League is different. Yeah.
00:27:15
Nick Britten
I totally agree with you I totally agree. I don't understand why. when i When I saw that Man United were bulking at the asking price of Martinez for 40 million quid, I'm thinking thus that's not expensive for a goalkeeper of his value.
00:27:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, it isn't.
00:27:28
Nick Britten
yeah you know we're we're seeing We're seeing strikers go for 150, 160 million.
00:27:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, it isn't.
00:27:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:27:32
Nick Britten
and yet we're we're And yet we're seeing a player who will be just as valuable as a striker, which is a world-class goalkeeper, going for 40 million pounds and people going, oh, no, that's bit too much.
00:27:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:43
Nick Britten
I don't get that.
00:27:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Doesn't make a lot of sense.
00:27:44
Nick Britten
I just don't get it at all. It doesn't make any sense. So unless they've got no more money to spend or there's PSR issues, et cetera, even if there's PSR issues, get some players out of club. We know there are four or five players Manchester United that they want out.
00:27:57
Nick Britten
And just get rid if you can, easier said than done. I appreciate that. ah Get rid of him. Go and get Martinez. Just go and get him.
00:28:05

00:28:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Quick one. Heroes and villains of the weekend. Who would you who would you select? Who would you pick out as your hero first and then your villain? And i'll I'll do the same.
00:28:49
Nick Britten
Well, my hero is is not an individual. It's a team. And my hero of the weekend, without a shadow of doubt, is Sunderland, who... i put in a very, very impressive second half performance against West Ham, won the game 3-0.
00:29:02
Nick Britten
And it's very rare that promoted teams into the Premier League get off to a 3-0 win in the first game of the season. It's very important that they do. It's very important that promoted teams pick up points early on because that's two things.
00:29:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
right.
00:29:16
Nick Britten
One, they come off the back of being promoted. They've got lots of confidence. The fans are behind them. there's a real good feel-good factor. But also... It doesn't take Premier League teams long to work out other teams.
00:29:28
Nick Britten
So those who have got promoted have always got, in the first few weeks of the season, a little bit of surprise factor about them. They've always got a little bit of that, we're not quite sure what they're going to do. And they've got to use that to their advantage.
00:29:39
Nick Britten
And Sunderland, getting off to a good start, as Sunderland did, three goals in the second half, a packed stadium of light, a raucous atmosphere,
00:29:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Rocking, absolutely rocking, North
00:29:50
Nick Britten
and And they couldn't have asked for anything more. I think they've got a great chance of staying up this season. I think Regis Labris is a brilliant coach, really young, really progressive. I thought they bought well over the summer.
00:30:01
Nick Britten
And you've just got to try and get points on the board. We've seen it so many times, haven't we? When promoted teams struggle at the start, by October, November, there's there's no hope.
00:30:12
Nick Britten
You know, whatever happens, you just sense it's all over.
00:30:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:30:14
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:30:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah you you got six points after 12 games. It's only going one way, isn't it?
00:30:18
Nick Britten
yeah Well, and six points is quite iss quite good by a lot of what we've seen. We've seen teams in the last few years have no points after, or one point after 12 games.
00:30:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:30:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:30:29
Nick Britten
And we might see it again this season.
00:30:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:30:30
Nick Britten
We don't know. ah So good on Sunderland. They are definitely my heroes of the week. Congratulations to them. And I hope they have a good season. I hope they

West Ham and Brentford Challenges

00:30:37
Nick Britten
stay up. ah My villain of the week is actually the other side, of the other dugout in that game, and that's Graham Potter, who I don't understand Graham Potter. I don't understand West Ham.
00:30:45
Nick Britten
I don't understand the point of any of it at the moment. He took over from Lopetegu in January, and he's done absolutely nothing so far.
00:30:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
No better.
00:30:51
Nick Britten
He's had an entire... Well, they've had an entire pre-season to work with them and they look at us as one-paced and as interested as they were at a back end of last season.
00:31:04
Nick Britten
And I heard Karen Brady go on TalkSport yesterday morning defending Graham Potter, saying he's a long-term fit he's long-term project and he's a great man motivator and he's great man manager and and he's really intelligent, he's very progressive.
00:31:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:31:19
Nick Britten
Well, great. Can we see some of that, please, in the West Ham set-up?
00:31:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:31:25
Nick Britten
Because nothing about West Ham looks progressive or or they don't really look like they play for their manager. They gave up pretty much after Sunderland scored their first goal.
00:31:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think they've got the personnel?
00:31:36
Nick Britten
No.
00:31:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think they've got the right personnel for relegation fight? Because they're going to be in a relegation fight.
00:31:42
Nick Britten
The only good player West Ham have got is Jarrod Bowen.
00:31:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Boehm.
00:31:44
Nick Britten
And don't know why.
00:31:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, why Boehm is still there is beyond me.
00:31:46
Nick Britten
it's really difficult to try ah We had this conversation last year, didn't we? I don't know why Jarrod Bowen plays for West Ham.
00:31:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, not me.
00:31:53
Nick Britten
because he's too good for them. And I thought he'd be a great fit for somebody like Newcastle so what i' it's probably out or like that.
00:31:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um.
00:32:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Villa, I found a Villa, what?
00:32:01
Nick Britten
He's probably out of their price range. both like but sorry Both Newcastle and Villa are having to watch the finances very, very tightly. But I just don't ah don't really understand it. and No, I don't think West Ham have got the stomach for a relegation fight.
00:32:15
Nick Britten
And I'm not sure Graham Potter is the man who who has that capability with him to prevent ah relegation fight. I don't see anything.
00:32:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
He, uh.
00:32:24
Nick Britten
just don't see any signs of them getting better. Yeah?
00:32:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think you're right about that.
00:32:27
Nick Britten
I don't see anything. You can talk.
00:32:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
mean, he's a great technician. He's very he's very well regarded as an intelligent strategist. But, you know, this that isn't going to be what's going to be required at West Ham. It's going to be grit and blood and determination and and and bodies on the line.
00:32:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'm just not seeing that from West Ham.
00:32:45
Nick Britten
It needs a little bit of what we might call the kind of the Neil Warnock, Sam Allardyce type of spirit.
00:32:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:32:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:32:52
Nick Britten
That kind of dogs of war, the Everton dogs of war, if you remember those.
00:32:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:32:55
Nick Britten
yeah
00:32:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:32:55
Nick Britten
and and i just And I'm just not sure. I'm just not sure.
00:32:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I think you're right about that. ah quick one

Hero for me, Chris Ward. what What a legend. now Now, I'm sitting to you, I'm talking to you here from Derby, so is Nick. ah We don't like to praise Forrest players. We don't like to praise Forrest, but sometimes you've just got to put your hand up and say, Chris Ward, what a remarkable player.
00:34:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Watch that game. Five minutes into a new season, he's banging one in. Uh, Great movement, great awareness, clinical finishing. don't you saw his second goal. What really impressed me about a second goal, because Wood's no greyhound, Chris Wood. He's not going to out-sprint most of the most defenders.
00:34:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
But his perception, his vision, he was already running before he was played through. He did.
00:34:28
Nick Britten
What a by Elliot Anderson. What a pass.
00:34:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
What a pass.
00:34:31
Nick Britten
Passed away.
00:34:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, what what a pass.
00:34:32
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:34:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
but But Wood's perception that that's what's happening, he was just two seconds ahead of everyone else. And therefore, when he received the ball, he was he was four yards ahead of everyone else. And he needed to be because he then he had to go around go go around the keeper and knock it in, which he did, of course.
00:34:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah just I think we we have to say, hero of the week for me, Chris Wood, keeps doing it. Keeps doing it.
00:34:57
Nick Britten
Well, this is it, isn't I mean, he had an unbelievable season last year, 20 Premier League goals in ah in a Nottingham Forest team, which themselves had a fantastic season after two years of struggling against relegation. And you wondered, didn't you?
00:35:10
Nick Britten
And we talked a lot about this towards the end last season and indeed, you know, off camera in the summer. Are Forests going to be as good? Well, they looked it on Saturday. although they were playing a ah very weak Brentford side.
00:35:23
Nick Britten
and ah Can Chris do it again? that's that's the kind of Can he do it again? Can he be that talisman? Can he score the goals? And um well, there you two in the first half.
00:35:35
Nick Britten
Two in the first half of the first season.
00:35:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, he's great.
00:35:37
Nick Britten
What's not to love about that? So yeah, well done him.
00:35:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Quick villain, similar similar really to your point on West Ham and Graham Potter. ah Brentford looked really shaky. And you know Keith Andrews, I know he's not really, well, he hasn't got any experience Premier League manager, yeah but I saw his interview afterwards. Lovely fellow, I'm sure. But you know he he was asked, what do Brentford need to do?
00:36:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it was kind of, well, we need to go back to basics. We need to, you know, look at the fundamentals. That isn't going to cut it.
00:36:09
Nick Britten
No, my no, no.
00:36:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
That isn't going to cut it in the Premier League, I'm afraid. ah So, you know, I know he's not got a great deal to work with, but Brentford have been a decent team.
00:36:12
Nick Britten
No, no.
00:36:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah I think if you are the three newly promoted teams of Leeds, Sunderland and maybe to a lesser extent Burnley, you're going to be looking at West Ham and Brentford and saying we're better than them.
00:36:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
We are better than them and we we can survive. So so I want ah struggle to call Keith Andrews a villain. But if we're looking for ah if we're looking for subjects and we're looking for issues, I think, which which point in the downward direction from this weekend,

Closing Remarks

00:36:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Brentford performance and Keith Andrews as a manager, I'm afraid, fits the bill.
00:36:47
Nick Britten
you
00:36:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
What's your take on Brentford quickly before we close things off, Nick?
00:36:56
Nick Britten
Well, on Saturday's podcast, and this was before, yes, I a moment ago referred to this obviously as Saturday's game. It was yesterday, Sunday. But before that game, on Saturday's podcast, we talked about who who we expect to get relegated, you and I can.
00:37:10
Nick Britten
And I expect Brentford to get relegated this season. I think they'll finish in the bottom three because they've lost the inspirational manager, Thomas Frank.
00:37:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I.
00:37:16
Nick Britten
They've lost ah some absolutely key players in Norsgaard and Buemo. It looks like Whistler's going to go to Newcastle. ah They've lost the goalkeeper. They've got a ah rookie manager in who's been around the game a long time. As you say, really nice guy, very experienced in football, but not experienced managing in the Premier League. is merciless. It's very, very difficult environment to manage in.
00:37:39
Nick Britten
And ah really worry for them. I worry for them because I just don't know quite what they've got. in their locker that is going to allow them to succeed this year.
00:37:51
Nick Britten
so And and and you're losing three goals in the first half hour of a game, or the first half, rather, of the opening game in a season does not bode well.
00:37:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. What's this space?
00:38:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I think you're right.
