Introduction & Podcast Setup

00:00:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome back to the Global Sports Podcast Network Daily Premier League Podcast for 2025-26 season. This is episode 2 of the new season. If you missed the first episode with Ken yesterday,
00:00:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah My name is Nick Bird and I'm back for a second year. Happy to be back on this podcast for yet another year. and although it's a swelteringly hot day in the UK today, despite it being 9pm, it's still incredibly humid.
00:00:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I apologize if you can hear the fan in the background, but it's so hot and little peek behind the curtain. and I already recorded this podcast and I did the rookie error of of having not used Zencastr in quite a few months to not um preview my ah microphone.
00:01:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I recorded the entire podcast without audio. So that was fun. um You're lucky enough to get take two. Maybe it'll be better. Maybe it won't be. You will have no idea. Only I will.

Alexander Izak's Transfer Saga

00:01:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Today I'm going to talk about the transfer news, the big transfer news that came out today. Alexander Rezac, a bit of Mark Gehi and Giovanni Leone, and then...
00:01:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
A little bit later, Donnarumma and Manchester City. I will also be joining you tomorrow. We will talk about Arsenal and probably the newly promoted teams and what sort of expectations we can have for them or lack of expectations.
00:01:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
So join me again tomorrow to hear about Arsenal from an Arsenal fan. If you are unaware, i should probably preface that. If you are new to the podcast this season, ah I'm an Arsenal fan.
00:02:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it has been an interesting summer. So look forward to hearing about that tomorrow. But first off, Alexander Izak. I wake up, I check my phone.
00:02:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's a notification from David Ornstein. Alexander Izak is adamant he will not play for Newcastle again. What a thing to wake up to when this is a player that you really wanted at your football club and now have no way of affording him.
00:02:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he's going to go to the team that you lost out on the title to last year because you were not good enough, quite frankly, and they were very good. so read I'll read the the bit that David Ornstein wrote about him for The Athletic this morning.
00:03:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Go and read that if you have a subscription. But this is the chunk, the meaningful chunk, I believe, about that. So, quote David Ormstein,
00:03:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
ezac's perspective is that after being informed last summer that a new contract would not yet be offered him because of newcastle's need to comply with football's financial rules and he's like already having a lucrative deal until twenty twenty eight he made it clear it would be his last campaign with the club so newcast we've been done deny this was expressed and believe the ford plan to discuss the situation including the possibility of fresh terms once twenty twenty four twenty five concluded So...
00:03:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
two weeks before the season ended he told how of his wish to leave and reiterated this honor on a call for the manager before flying to sweden after a final day defeat by eton
00:03:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
so Clearly, I believe this is new information, the fact that he had um said last season he was going to leave at the end of the 2024-25 season if he didn't receive an improved contract offer and that he's reiterated it two weeks before the season and then on a that he would um like to leave this summer if his contract terms aren't improved
00:04:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
the whole timing of when he made this public this summer was really peculiar. It was after Arsenal had signed a striker. It was after Liverpool had signed a striker.
00:04:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And those felt like the two clubs who really wanted him had the space for him and potentially had the financial capability of doing it. So I've seen...
00:04:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's just lovable fans but who have said they're so. And this may just be minority who have said this. And ah the end of the day, it's Twitter. It's largely nonsense.
00:05:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I've seen people saying he's never had an interest in Arsenal. Maybe this Arsenal bias from my part as well. think that is ludicrous to believe.
00:05:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's going to end up but being Liverpool because Arsenal cannot afford it anymore. But I think if Izaak had said at the start of the window, i want to leave, there would have been about a battle between Arsenal and Liverpool for a signature.
00:05:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who would have won it? Who knows? Probably Liverpool because they seem to have so much money to spend this summer after not spending last summer. But, yeah, I think it would have been more of a battle for his signature. And, like i say, the timing of it was just so peculiar.
00:05:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:05:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm questioning how he's being advised in this. At the end of the day, i can't really criticise him for wanting improved off improved um contract terms. I believe he's on ah around £120,000 a week.
00:06:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the most anyone at Newcastle is on is £150,000 a week. And while they do have to comply with financial rules, at the end of the day, it's incredibly public who you're owned by, which is...
00:06:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
The Saudi Arabian state, pretty much. You have so much money. This is arguably the best second best striker in the... Sorry, not arguably. This is either the best or second best striker in the league, depending on who you prefer over him and Haaland. I think that's relatively objective as far as football can be.
00:06:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's... It's so... weird to me that Newcastle are standing their ground so much. Obviously, we don't know how much he'd like.
00:06:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe it's just such such an increase that it would completely blow their way structure out of proportions, and they're just not willing to do that.
00:07:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
here's your guy that is going to lead you through this project. And perhaps there their replacement, which... appears to be Samu at the moment.
00:07:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But as we've seen a window, their options are getting poached. They're deciding they don't want to play for Newcastle. So we'll see if that goes through. i imagine this one will, because...
00:07:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Everyone else who wanted a striker, it seems, has got their guy. So, and for people whose opinions I trust, Samu was an incredibly exciting prospect.
00:07:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can't say watched loads of him personally. My knowledge of him is mostly through Football Manager, where he is unbelievably good. So if Football Manager has anything to go by, be excited.
00:08:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
if people whose opinions I trust are anything to go by, also be pretty excited. ah And this kind of and naturally brings me into what I wanted to talk about in terms of Newcastle is ah seems to be a lot of expectation that they're going to fall off drastically. I listened to ken Ken's podcast when I was on my run this morning and he his opinion is that Newcastle can finish in the bottom half and Fair enough. and But in my opinion, i don't i think this the squad is still so strong.
00:08:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
The wingers in Gordon was already such a strong counterattacking threat for them. And now they've added an even quicker winger in Elanga. So no matter who is that striker, it's going to be strong. And obviously they're going to lose goals.
00:08:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they're not going to be in the top four, in my opinion. I think they'll still get European football, whichever competition that is. ah ah can't I just can't see them dropping out of the top eight because perhaps something I'll get into tomorrow, maybe some my own predictions for the season.
00:09:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
imagine we'll

Newcastle's Challenges and Prospects

00:09:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
have some GSPN predictions later on. Perhaps after the window closes. ah But I just don't think the rest of the league is ah is as strong as it was last year.
00:09:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Where mid-table teams had were picking up so many points against the bigger teams. And the bottom three were so far out of it that they were free points, basically.
00:09:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I i think their squad is still too strong to to fall apart. Their midfield, that midfield starting three is so robust in Tonali, Joe Linton and Bruno Guimaraes.
00:10:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
They have some issues in terms of depth there, but also in that article that I read from about Alexander Izak, it goes on to talk about how Newcastle are the frontrunners for Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa.
00:10:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he is an exciting prospect. He's not necessarily reached the heights that when he first came in Aston Villa, it seems he might reach.
00:10:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
But this an opportunity. He's, I believe, 24 now. to move to an exciting project where he'll be probably the first choice in terms of that more attacking midfield substitution again though i talk about him getting more game time i think he'll be on the bench he'll probably be an option on the wings but That midfield is so short in numbers for Newcastle.
00:10:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
They have just five at the moment when I checked before recording. Bruno, Tonali, Willock, Jalinton and Lewis Miley. An injury to one of those starting three and you are quite worried.
00:11:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
I believe Willett got injured. I don't know how bad of an injury it was. I know Gordon went off with an injury, but from what I read, it was just sort of like a twist of the ankle and Eddie Howe's not particularly concerned.
00:11:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Newcastle's weak point is their defence and Bottman is their strongest guy and he is very injury prone. Shah is 33, Dan Byrne 33.
00:11:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've brought in Malik Tior who is younger but he's not a defender I'm particularly convinced by and they've spent 35-40 million and we'll get on to Gaye later when I talk about him I'll touch on how I feel like it made more sense for him to go to Newcastle but back to this defensive frailties I believe are the main point of concern for Newcastle Liverpool, Mento and Hall I really like as fullbacks but if ah either of them gets injured the deputies are so weak in my opinion.
00:12:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm not a fan of Trippier.
00:12:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
guess burn is the other deputy but i mean there's also matt target still who they are having trouble getting rid of because he's on a hundred thousand pounds a week if you got rid of that and gave a hundred thousand pounds to isak maybe you don't have the problem you having with isak but that's another deal um But yeah, they i I just think they will be fine in terms of that drastic fall off I see a lot of people talking about. I think it's naturally stemming from the fact they're missing out on so many of their go-to targets.
00:12:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I just think it won't be quite as bad as people are ah saying at the moment. But before I go on to the impacts of this Izak signing and the two defenders they've been linked to today like at Liverpool, um let's hear a little bit about Zencastr.

Liverpool's Strategic Moves

00:13:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
You don't need hear it twice. Zencaster, it is really good platform for us. and But now to talk about Liverpool. Mark Gaye, £30-35 million.
00:14:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
thirty to thirty five million pounds And Giovanni Leone for likely 40 million euros. um One of them, you'll be surprised.
00:14:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
i don't know a load about Giovanni Leone. I can't imagine basically anyone... um does quite frankly so Gay I'll touch on first 30 to 35 million pounds they obviously rejected double that in 70 million in January and they were justified in doing so they won the FA Cup and they have won the Community Shield this past weekend I thought they'd still get like 50, to be honest. I thought there would be competition for his signature.
00:14:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
At 30 to 35 million pounds, I'm mind-blowing there is not a rush to get him. And especially because... From what the report said today, he wants assurances over playing time for the World Cup, which makes an incredible amount of sense. He's impressed at the Euros for England, but there's competition for centre-back places.
00:15:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's obviously John Stones, Levi Kohler is going to miss basically the whole season, it seems, with an ACL injury. So, I guess that's that's one less person he'll have to contend with, but...
00:15:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
It just doesn't really make sense to me how Liverpool are getting such a free run at Gea. And like I touched on before we heard about Zencastr, you look at the fee that Nukocle paid for Malik Teor, you look at the sort of defensive deficiencies I believe Man City have at centre-back, and you wonder why neither of them are looking at Mark Gea as A good cheap homegrown quota filling option at that price.
00:16:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he would also be guaranteed more playtime there, in my opinion. He's competing with Canate for that spot next to VVD or Virgil van Tijck at Liverpool.
00:16:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it Yeah, ah as you can tell, I'm really confused by this. Not in that Liverpool are getting an incredibly talented centre-back for an incredibly good deal on their part.
00:16:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
So like credit to them. But from the players' perspective and from other teams' perspective, I'm slightly confused. I wonder if we'd see...
00:16:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
in the coming days bit more um challenge for his signature but I think other teams are preoccupied with other deals pretty much and Man City's Donnarumma deal I'll get to later on. But yeah, the this is a great signing for Liverpool.
00:17:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they were really struggling with depth at centre-back. And ah as well as Gay, they're going to this young centre-back from Palmer, Giovane Leone.
00:17:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
18 years old, 6'5", played 17 games for Palmer last season. Like said, I don't know a lot about him, but clearly for going... to be going for that sort of fee and for club who are generally incredibly sensible with their transfer business um in Liverpool to be willing to pay that sort of fee that he has to be an exciting prospect And this kind of finally brings me on to, in terms of Liverpool, just the amount of money they're able to spend this summer, I don't think many people expected.
00:18:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But I sort came to this conclusion when i was speaking to this about speak about this in my initial recording. they ah the moment they've spent 293 million euros according to Transfermarkt.
00:18:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've brought in 196 million euros in sales. and the Gayleoni and Alexander Izak would likely be another 200 million possibly more depending on how much Izak ends up costing.
00:18:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
So And I can't see many departures from Liverpool. I think Simakas is the only one where you're pretty certain he will go.
00:18:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
the only ah ten other potential ones I think are if someone manages to tempt Ben Doak for... a decent fee or Harvey Elliott who has been linked away to quite a few clubs this window whether they're willing to it seems like quite a high fee it seems to be about 50 million that they want for him which seems just ludicrous and but Liverpool are so consistently good at getting fees that where you look at them and go how on earth are you getting this fee for a player who
00:19:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
really should not be commanding those sort of fees but i mean this is how they're able to spend so much money at the end of the day and if we add that 200 million on top of the money they've already spent and be generous and say they bring in roughly 50 million more in um Incomings.
00:19:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
If you said. Liverpool will spend we have a net spend of. Negative £250 million. pounds having not Having. Only spent on. Chiesa last summer.
00:20:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And somewhat. ma ash really Depending on when. That fee actually goes through. i imagine it went through this summer though. um You'd.
00:20:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kind of go from yeah. That sort of makes sense but. The amount of business they've done and with so much of it going on, Wurtz and Izak, who are possibly the two most sought-after players this entire window, it's so impressive that they managed to get both of them.
00:20:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it has to make them favourites for the Premier League, in my opinion. And there has to be that expectation and pressure, in my opinion, for them to do that and... Yes, you can you can fairly argue that because they won the league last season, there isn't as much pressure, but if you have a front line of Eketike, Isaac, Salah with Florian Verts behind it, and you have a very strong centre-back pairing in canna
00:21:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
sorry then Van Dijk and either Kanate or Gehi with two very exciting while potentially defensively deficient wingbacks in Kerkis and Frimpong with the best goalkeeper in the world in my opinion Alisson in goal like how can they not be favourites and have that pressure to be Premier League champions again and we'll get into Arsenal tomorrow but I'm expecting heavy external pressure on Arsenal to win the title and yes you can
00:21:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
There can be demands for more than one team to win the title. But in my opinion, it's the pressure is more should be more on Liverpool with the business they've done.
00:21:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And whilst Arsenal have come second three times and it's fair to say you need to get a move on and get this done, i still have Liverpool favourites in Liverpool.

Psychological Dynamics in Football

00:22:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like I say, that if I touch on some predictions tomorrow... Spoiler, they are my pick to win the league. Because i just can't look past the quality, especially in attack.
00:22:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And while they may have deficiencies in defending counterattacks... I think the sheer quality in attack and the tweaks that slot is capable of making that we saw last season will mean it.
00:22:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
They can deal with that threat. And i think there's also sort of, don't know aura is the right word, but if you can have this, you have this fear factor, fear factor is probably a better way phrasing it.
00:22:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
that you can have going into a game, then teams are less likely to be brave and attack you. And I think we saw we saw that fear factor disappear with Man City last season, especially with Rodri injured, where teams were had almost figured out City and how to get at them.
00:23:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And while they had a really strong 2025 part of their season that kind of went under the radar, they that fear factor had gone and whether that will be back for them this season, who knows, but I think Liverpool have that fear factor next season. I think that is maybe this is just something that I think is important.
00:23:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh But yeah, I think think that is important when playing those sort of mid-table teams who... have the potential to get at you, but whether they' they're brave enough to go and hit you
00:24:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
almost comes down to that fear factor. But I think that's all I have to say on Liverpool at the moment. There's going lot to say about Liverpool, especially once the signings get done. If they do get done, I think Izak is the least likely to get done and I still think that will happen just because of the amount of
00:24:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
um but the scale of the tantrum almost from Isaac that he's kicked up. So we'll hear about Bionique and then talk about Donnarumma going to Manchester City and the we weirdness i'll say around that but first let me tell you about bionique global sports podcast network has partnered with bionique the world's most personalized supplements because your body is unique because without knowing exactly what your body needs taking off the shelf supplements means you're probably not getting enough of the nutrients you do need and maybe too much of the nutrients you don't

Donnarumma's Transfer to Manchester City

00:25:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, seemingly out of nowhere today, Donnarumma to Manchester City seems to have progressed very quickly. And while Donnarumma being ah nudged towards the exit by both his own volition and Luis Enrique's volition hasn't been...
00:26:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
and isn't something new it's a surprise it's man city that he's heading towards so the reasoning seems to both be a personnel thing and a contract slash wage problem the there has been statements before i started recording from both luis enrique and um gg donnarumma firstly, from what I'd read, I believe it was yesterday or the day before, Donnarumma had problem with the wage that he was requesting and PSG weren't willing to give it.
00:26:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Which in itself is quite surprising considering I saw graph of the wage bills across Europe and PSG were number one. So while their Champions League win was incredibly entertaining, they do have the highest wage bill on the continents.
00:26:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the fact that they weren't willing to give him ah new contract despite how well he played in that run, as much as I personally don't think he's particularly elite, shall we say,
00:27:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was undoubtedly elite in that run. So they when I was looking up how much he's on at the moment, it seemed to be anywhere between 200,000 per week and 250,000 per week, depending the source you look at. And obviously the credibility of these numbers is is difficult to to work out.
00:27:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
But those those were the numbers I was seeing. But if I just read the statement from both Luis Enrique and Don Romer, this seems to be more a personnel thing. And Piatri have brought in Lucas Chevalier from Lille, who is going to be their new number one, according to Luis Enrique, who says, Don Romer is out of the squad as it's my own decision. I'm 100% responsible.
00:28:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
I want a different kind of goalkeeper. and I made the decision. GGO is one of the best goalkeepers in the whole world. and Donnarumma's statement, which is a longer one, to the special Paris fans.
00:28:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
From the first day I arrived, I gave everything, on and off the pitch, to earn my place and defend the goal of Paris Saint-Germain. This is the crucial bit now. Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the the group and can contribute to the team's success. I'm disappointed and disheartened.
00:28:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
He then goes on to thank the fans and his team, which is general stuff that you've seen and read before when players make statements about leaving their clubs.
00:28:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
But from a Man City perspective, which I think is the most confusing part of this, because when you see Don Romer's leaving... my mind went to two clubs, Manchester City and, sorry, Manchester United and Chelsea, not Manchester City, because those two have problems at goalkeeper,
00:29:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
And those two, I think, have the capability of paying the wages that he would desire, whether it is smart to do that or not, depending on his past form, despite how well he played last season.
00:29:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the fact that it's Man City is made even more baffling by the fact that They brought in Trafford already or brought back from Burnley who struggled in his first Premier League stint with Burnley but then after their relegation was the best goalkeeper in the championship last season kept an unbelievable amount of clean sheets for them.
00:29:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it seemed like he was going to be the number one because with the amount of rotation between Edison and Ortega that Pep was already making, he clearly had didn't have strong faith in either of them.
00:30:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it just made sense for Trafford to be that number one. And I guess Ortega was going to be the second guy with Scott Carson still going strong as a third, I believe.
00:30:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
That may not be true. it's irrelevant, whatever. But now Donald Rumba coming in he has to be number one. And with Trafford going to Manchester City instead of Newcastle, um who really wanted him to be their new number one,
00:30:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's now going to be number two. Which is. Just. It's mad. And. The fee. The reported fee from Fabrizio Romano is. 50 million euros.
00:30:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Which. I think feels about right. Considering the. The situation of Donnarumma. With him. Wanting to leave. And being forced out. So.
00:31:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
While he had a really strong season left, he had he had one year left on his deal, I believe. So I think this fee feels about right. I can understand if you think it's low.
00:31:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can also kind of understand if you think it's high. Based on the situation he's in. But yeah. This just doesn't massively feel like a Man City goalkeeper to me either.
00:31:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's really poor in terms of claiming crosses. i don't think he has been consistent enough in terms of his um in terms of his performances.
00:31:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
to warrant a move to such a big club despite winning the Champions League and already being at a big club in PSG I will cede that but he's going to a club with so many where the expectation every season is to win the Premier League and arguably also win the the Champions League so There's also so much pressure in terms of being able to play out from the back and it's not something I think is Donnerham's strong point either.
00:32:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
So this is a transfer that I saw today and was really confused by. So I'm fascinated to see how this goes. We won't know until...
00:32:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
he pulls on that Man City shirt and is playing consistently. Perhaps he has found himself in that part in this past season where he was really strong in the Champions League.
00:32:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And now he's going to be the goalkeeper everyone thought he was going to be when he came through at AC Milan and was starting for them at 16 years old.
00:32:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
you can't help but look at this and wonder what is going through James Trafford's mind. Edison is going to go to Galatasaray, it seems. Ortega surely has to move on now as well.
00:33:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
This is just one of those transfers that comes out of the blue and you really don't expect. So i'm fascinated to see how this goes.
