Newcastle vs Liverpool Match Analysis

00:00:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome everybody, welcome along to Global Sports Podcast Network Towers for this edition of the Daily Premier League Podcast. My name is Ken Davis, I am joined as ever, well, my good friend, Nick Britton, to pick over, to mull over the details of an action-packed 90 minutes last night at St. James' Park.
00:00:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nick, welcome. what's your what's your What's your take on this and what are your thoughts on the game? and Then we'll get into the details. you.
00:00:39
Nick Britten
Well, I think everybody's still calming down, aren't they? Because it is very rare, Ken. It is very rare that such enormous hype for a game then lives up to that hype.
00:00:50
Nick Britten
Because the hype going into last night's game was was unlike anything that has been there for quite a long while. And it's a bank holiday Monday. ah The pubs are open all day. I'm sure the Geordies are well refreshed. The noise and the atmosphere in that stadium was amazing.
00:01:03
Nick Britten
Second to none. And the game, for all manner of reasons that we're going to go over, lived up to that expectation. Not perhaps as a classic in terms of free-flowing great football, but just in terms of a magnificent spectacle of Premier League football.
00:01:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was. It was absolutely astonishing. You couldn't take your eyes off it. I was riveted to the game all the way through. It's what you want yeah in Premier League football. This traditionally is a classic. We've seen Newcastle and Liverpool. This was no different.
00:01:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, in our last episode, we predicted right at the end, or I predicted, that this was not a game that was going to finish with 22 players on the pitch. I think it was absolutely obvious with all the hype going into all the energy, all the enthusiasm, and it didn't.
00:01:47
Nick Britten
Thank you.

Was the Red Card Justified?

00:01:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the big issue, of course, was around Anthony Gordon. ah What was your take on that? Obviously, you're a qualified ref, so I'm i'm really interested in your perspective and on that.
00:01:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
But what was your take on it in real time? What was your take in it how the process went through? And ultimately, would you think that was the right decision?
00:02:06
Nick Britten
Okay, yeah, I think it was the right decision and I think the process worked. Now, on yesterday's podcast, you will be well aware, Ken, because you were with me, I really got my soapbox and and had a bit of a rant about the quality and the standard of refereeing over the weekend of the Premier League.
00:02:21
Nick Britten
Simon Hooper refereed last night's game and I thought he refereed extremely well in a very, very difficult game. Now, when when it comes to looking at the Anthony Gordon a card. well What we've seen is Anthony Gordon run at pace a long distance. He's come from essentially one side of the pitch to the other.
00:02:38
Nick Britten
He's gone straight through into the back of Virgil van Dijk. He's nowhere near the ball. He can't seriously be thinking as his feet left the ground and went into a lunge that he's going to get the ball and his studs are up and they've hit the back of Virgil van Dijk's leg ah to the point where his socks come off almost, his shin pads come out almost and I can understand why it wasn't an immediate...
00:03:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:03:02
Nick Britten
yeah red card because it may well be that Simon Hooper has actually, was actually following the ball and didn't get a full and proper view of it because there's lots and lots of stuff going on.
00:03:13
Nick Britten
So he thinks initially it's a yellow, but of course the VAR intervenes and says, no, I think you need to go and have a look at this. We think it's a red card challenge and they advise him to go and have a look at it. And he has a look at it. And I think what he can see is several things. He can see that Gordon comes in at pace.
00:03:31
Nick Britten
that he comes in with his studs up, that he comes in very late, and as a result, it's a dangerous challenge. He's putting his opponent in danger, and therefore, it's a red card. And I don't think anybody can have any complaints about it. I've seen and I've heard and I've read, and and Eddie Howe kind of led the charge on this, as you would expect him to do, to be fair to him, that Gordon was unlucky, that he tried to pull out of the challenge, and it wasn't malicious.
00:03:57
Nick Britten
But I don't think anybody looking at that could disagree that it was a dangerous challenge. It certainly put Virgil van Dijk's safety at risk. The ball was nowhere. He wasn't challenged for the ball or anything like that. And I don't think, having seen it on the screen, Simon Hooper had any choice whatsoever.
00:04:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I pretty much agree with that. um It was his standing leg. i don't know if you've seen

Anthony Gordon's Decision-Making

00:04:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
the damage. don't if you actually saw the images of the stud rake marks, if you like, down Virgil van Dijk's calf.
00:04:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it was which pretty grim.
00:04:23
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:04:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think the issue with Gordon, I mean, there's an argument that he slipped. When I saw it in real time, I thought e he had slipped. and I still think it was a red. I still think it was a red. Let make this clear. but But I think what happens in them circumstances, I've seen it so many times we've watched football for the years we have.
00:04:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
When a player, if you like, goes from the the right side, chasing down the right fullback, then he goes to the centre half, then he goes to the keeper, and then he goes out to the left, and the bloke's chasing him, and he he he's thinking, I'm going to be a hero here.
00:04:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
The crowd's egging me on to go and do this. I'm going to be a hero and I'm going to get my foot to the ball. I'm going to knock it out for a throw in. Place is going to erupt. It's that kind of energy, that kind of enthusiasm that's going to make the difference tonight.
00:05:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's what's going through his head. That's what's going through his head. And he just lost a bit of control because he was he wanted to be the hero. And he ends up the zero because he just had a bit of a brain dump.
00:05:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mean, one of the things we talked about on the podcast last night was who is going to handle this the best? And Gordon didn't handle it very well.
00:05:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think...
00:05:38
Nick Britten
No.
00:05:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sorry, go on.
00:05:40
Nick Britten
ah Eddie Howell was at pains to kind of point out ahead of the game that Newcastle have to play in control of their emotions. And there was a classic example of a player allowing the adrenaline to get to him, to allow the the situation and the and and the event to get to him.
00:06:02
Nick Britten
And he just lost control of his emotions for a moment.
00:06:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Move.
00:06:06
Nick Britten
And look, even if he slipped, it's still a red card challenge. it's still a foul at a red card because he's endangered his opponent. So, yeah, maybe he did, maybe he didn't.
00:06:18
Nick Britten
I don't know. But I think when I saw him coming in, steaming in at full tilt, and the ball isn't even there to challenge to be challenged for, you're thinking, where's this going to end up?
00:06:28
Nick Britten
and And that's where it ended up.
00:06:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just a final point on this before we move on, that aspect of the game. This leaves Newcastle in a really difficult position because, you know, Gordon was a makeshift number nine

Newcastle's Striker Dilemma

00:06:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
anyway. Funnily enough, I was quite impressed with him in the lead-up and before he got sent off in the sense of, you know, there's good movement. i mean, he's finishing left a bit to be desired.
00:06:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
But where does that leave Newcastle now in terms of their number nine spot?
00:06:53
Nick Britten
well it Well, maybe the opportunity is there for Willis Sula, who's come off the bench to score the goal and score an equaliser, because he is a natural number nine.
00:07:01
Nick Britten
And he must have been looking at this going, well, hang about. I'm the only striker on the books of this football club right now. Why aren't I getting a game? So why is he playing essentially a winger at a nine who's not he's not very good at scoring goals, let's face it?
00:07:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:16
Nick Britten
He hasn't in those two games or one and a half games that he's played. He missed chances against Aston Villa. He didn't look convincing in front of goal, I don't think, yesterday. why is he getting a game ahead of me? Asula comes on, scores a goal.
00:07:28
Nick Britten
So Asula's staked his claim, he's had his opportunity and he's taken that opportunity and I would expect him, as things stand, to start against Leeds on Saturday. But Newcastle have got to get in the market they've got to get in market quick.
00:07:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:07:39
Nick Britten
But of course, the thing hanging over them is this ridiculous Alexander East story, which quite frankly, just needs sorting out now. They played the game last night. If anybody was waiting for last night to happen before things were sorted out, we'll sort it out.
00:07:52
Nick Britten
Because... Newcastle don't know really what they're doing. Other clubs who might be looking to sell to Newcastle, they don't really know how much money they've got. ah The Newcastle players don't know whether they're going to be having a striker in.
00:08:05
Nick Britten
This uncertainty has got to end one way or other. They don't know whether he's actually going to come back and play. It's looking increasingly unlikely now. He's reiterated, he's doubled down on his comments in the last 24 hours that he doesn't want to play. And so they need to get in the market and get in the market quick.
00:08:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:08:22
Nick Britten
Otherwise, we're going to be left with a situation where they probably will sell Isaac in the end and they're not going to have anybody to replace him. And that's them till January.
00:08:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:08:30
Nick Britten
without And they've got a Premier League campaign, they've Champions League campaign, and they've got one striker on the books who is, as much as I like Willis Sula, and I do like him, he's he's a rookie at this level.
00:08:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely nightmare scenario.
00:08:42
Nick Britten
So it doesn't leave him in great position.
00:08:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nightmare scenario for Newcastle, I think.
00:08:45
Nick Britten
Oh, yeah.
00:08:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, you know, he's ex that domino. That domino's got to fall. it's kind of In my opinion, it's going to fall before the end of the week. As we know in football, well as Eddie Howe knows, it pays to get your team selection right. Here at Global Sports Podcast Network, we spent a lot of time selecting our delivery partner.
00:09:04

00:09:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, if it's a tale of two number nines of sorts, What about Etikite?
00:09:34
Nick Britten
No, get it right.
00:09:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is Etikite changing the narrative? i mean, is he the real deal? Is he changing the dynamics of the Alexander-Isak thing as far as Liverpool are concerned? Because he looked you looked up a million dollars again last night.
00:09:48
Nick Britten
Do you mean Ecutike? Is that you mean?
00:09:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, Eketika, yeah.
00:09:53
Nick Britten
ah Well, I thought he was quite quiet last night. And I thought the whole of the Liverpool front line was quite quiet tonight last night. But he scored a goal. And that's what he's on the pitch to do.
00:10:04
Nick Britten
So, yeah, it's two games in a row.
00:10:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Great finish. Great finish.
00:10:07
Nick Britten
He's scored. Does it alter the dynamic of the Izzac? No, I don't think it does. Because if they want Izzac, they'll go and sign Izzac. i don't think I don't think the fact that Ecutico's come and he started pretty well is going to change any that. They either are or they aren't. i don't think it's going to sway the debate.
00:10:24
Nick Britten
If he'd come along and not scored for a couple of games, i wouldn't have thought that would sway it either. I thought he was pretty say i thought it was pretty quiet last night. It didn't particularly impress me.
00:10:35
Nick Britten
But then he get he pops up with a goal straight after half-time. So, you know fair play and well done to him. He's done what he's there on the pitch to do.
00:10:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i see i think ah think if he hadn't scored, what I'm thinking about this is, is is it changing Liverpool's valuation? yeah Are they saying, well, you know, £110 million, yeah, we're comfortable with that, £125 million, well, we've got a set of TK guys, you know, he's banging them in for us.
00:11:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
mean, does it change anything you' write in relation to he would
00:11:04
Nick Britten
No, I don't think it because I don't think football clubs think like that. I don't think they think in that short-term nature. Liverpool have got to win the Premier League again. They've got to ah got to win the Champions League. They can't do that with one striker.
00:11:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, that makes sense.
00:11:14
Nick Britten
And if Ekotike gets injured or or goes on a run of bad form, which is perfectly possible, then they're going to need somebody else. What signing Izak would do is is give them brilliant options up front. It would create competition for places. It keeps everybody on their toes.
00:11:30
Nick Britten
We don't know whether in three months XTK is going to be any good or not. So, no, I don't think football clubs think about, oh, we've had two good games.
00:11:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:11:38
Nick Britten
Therefore, we won't sign our main target all year all summer. No, they'll either they'll either have decided or are in the middle of deciding or are in the middle of negotiating a deal. They're either going to walk away.
00:11:49
Nick Britten
ah don't think they will. Or they're going to negotiate a deal in Newcastle. which will probably 130 million line. get him over the line
00:11:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
OK, great. Next point, I just want to get your view on. what is This is the second time Liverpool have given up a two-goal lead ah in two games, essentially.

Liverpool's Defensive Concerns

00:12:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah What does that tell us about Liverpool's susceptibility? And the fact that they've now gone on and won those games after being pulled back too, too late in the game, what does that tell us about Liverpool's tenacity and resilience?
00:12:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Discussed.
00:12:29
Nick Britten
Well, if we start with the defence, if you look at last night's defence, you had Kerkhez, who's a new player, ah playing a left-back. You had Van Dijk in the middle. You had Kanata in the middle. And you had Slobberzai filling in at right-back. So, Slobberzai is not a right-back. And it showed last night.
00:12:44
Nick Britten
Simple as that. Kanata started the season in an absolute shocker. he had a terrible game last night. He was all over the place. And you've got Kerkhez, who did not impress me at all. So, you've kind of got Van Dijk, probably.
00:12:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, Kurtes for their first goal. Oh, my word. He wasn't even he wasn't looking at the player.
00:12:58
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:12:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
He didn't challenge. He's just looking at the goal.
00:13:01
Nick Britten
Yeah, the ball's slung across and and that should be a defender's ball. And Bruno's give rush has come along. oh oh They just beat him to it. He just physically beat him to it and pushed him out of the way. Yeah.
00:13:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
not shearer, is he? I mean, he's's he's you know he's a professional footballer, but he shouldn't be dominating things like that.
00:13:17
Nick Britten
yeah No, so not impressed with Kerkers. Van Dijk must be stood there looking around going, what's going on around me? He's not used to that. So they just looked they just looked um just a bit of a makeshift defence. Now, Kerkers should get better.
00:13:32
Nick Britten
um You've got Frimpong to come back in from injury. you've got Conor Blattery can play it right. Kanate... should get better. Van Dijk, we know, is a world-class player. So I'm expecting, I just think this is a little bit of an early season blip. So I don't think it'll last.
00:13:46
Nick Britten
so don't think it's going to tell us that much in terms of what's going to happen in the rest of the season. They've just got off to a shaky start ah in defence. and if you If you then look forward...
00:13:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just on that point, by the way, just on that point, sorry to put in, but I was talking to a Liverpool supporter, a long-standing Liverpool supporter last night, worried to death about Canato. He was saying, we're in for Gehi from Palace.
00:14:08
Nick Britten
Well, that's been noted, yeah.
00:14:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mark Gehi, we need Mark Gehi next to Wersel van Dijk and then, you know, we're not going to drop another point.
00:14:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you reckon that's an option?
00:14:17
Nick Britten
Well, it's certainly an option. The thing about Gehi, what what i'll be interested to see about Gehi is that he plays and has played for quite long time in a back three at Palace. I wonder whether... I wonder whether he can play in a back two because we don't he hasn't played there for quite long time.
00:14:32
Nick Britten
Although, be fair, he did for England, didn't he? did for England and looked very impressive in his England appearances. He's a much better defender. I mean, Gahey would be a great addition to the ranks. And you talked a moment ago, is well, would the XTK situation impact on the Van Dijk?
00:14:46
Nick Britten
story if you like, sorry, on the Izak situation, I said no.
00:14:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
he Yeah, that makes a lot
00:14:50
Nick Britten
If you're going to ask me, would the Canate situation and the way you start the season impact on their thinking on Gehi? I think probably yes.
00:14:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
of sense.
00:14:58
Nick Britten
I think probably would. I think if anything, they've looked at the first two games and thought, yeah, actually, we need to go and get Gehi. We need to go and get him because we need, you know, we need it we need somebody to come in and form a really strong partnership with Van Dijk that's going to do us well this season.
00:15:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Great. I would agree with that. Sorry, I interrupted that. i think you're going to move on to the the forward positions of Liverpool in terms
00:15:19
Nick Britten
Well, look at the four positions. Now, i mean, just interestingly, last night, when you look across the front line in newcastle of of Liverpool, we'll come on to Newcastle in bit. If you look at the front line of Liverpool, neither of them, or all three of them, or four of them, I guess, but that those three you play behind XTK, really had a good game.
00:15:38
Nick Britten
Salah was very quiet. Yeah.
00:15:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Salah was really quiet. I mean, so some things change for Salah, do you think?
00:15:41
Nick Britten
you what No, no, no, no, no. This is Salah. This is sort of Salah. He'll burst into life and score a shed load of goals. And and we'll forget the fact he started the season with a couple of games.
00:15:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Well, I hope so. He's in my fantasy team.
00:15:55
Nick Britten
it does No, I wouldn't be worried about Salah at all. ah We know his quality and we know this is what happens to him. And everybody doubts him. Everybody goes, oh, it's his contract. And then he turns around and scores a shed load of goals. and Everybody goes, OK, then.
00:16:08
Nick Britten
So no no worries about him, but yeah, he was quiet. Virts has a new signing, not impressed. Last night, I thought Gakpo had a pretty decent game. thought Ekiteke was okay. But what they have got in those areas is real quality.
00:16:22
Nick Britten
But if look at the look at the goals they scored last night. The Gravenberch goal. Gravenberch is a great player. really like him.
00:16:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:16:28
Nick Britten
Gravenberch goal was literally out of nowhere out and out nothing. And having looked at it a hundred times, I think... My impression was at the start, and I just can't tell having looked at it loads, whether it took a slight nick off Shah, which just took it away.
00:16:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think so.
00:16:41
Nick Britten
Because the ball seems to move at a weird angle. I'm not sure.
00:16:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
It does, but I've looked at it a number of times. I i think it's straight in.
00:16:47
Nick Britten
on
00:16:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
but But Pope was completely wrong for it.
00:16:48
Nick Britten
I'm not sure. um Well, well ah Pope was completely unsighted, I think. That was a problem. He didn't expect to have a shot from it.
00:16:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:16:54
Nick Britten
It went past three Newcastle players, and by the time he got sight of it, it's right in the corner.
00:16:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:16:58
Nick Britten
He's not getting down to it. and But i still thought I wonder whether it just took the slightest of flick, which just altered the course of the ball. Anyway, by the way, doesn't matter. It's in the back of the net, so fair play. But it's a goal out of nowhere.
00:17:10
Nick Britten
You look at the second goal straight after half-time, and it was quite a simple goal because Newcastle hadn't woken up. was quite a straightforward goal, a good finish. He took it well.
00:17:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Great finish.
00:17:18
Nick Britten
And then the third goal... Frankly, he had pretty much no to do with nothing to do with Virts or Gakpo.
00:17:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
What a finish.
00:17:27
Nick Britten
It was a great run from Salah down the right. the The thing that made that made the goal, um and the reason why Salah shouldn't get an assist for it, was the dummy by Soberslaw. He finds himself from where he was right back, but obviously he moved into midfield then. What a dummy.
00:17:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:42
Nick Britten
What a dummy. He fooled everybody. And then you've got ah you've got a young lad, ah Rio, running onto it. And everybody's going, oh, he'll take a touch and then, you know can he finish?
00:17:52
Nick Britten
but It's just bent it. First time with such pace and such whip. It was an unbelievable, it was a brilliant, brilliant goal. It was a brilliant team goal, but a brilliant finish.
00:18:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was wonderful.
00:18:05
Nick Britten
From a 16-year-old.
00:18:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
i
00:18:07
Nick Britten
It's about 16.
00:18:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
He buried it.
00:18:08
Nick Britten
He's 17 on Friday, isn't he? But just about 16.
00:18:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:18:11
Nick Britten
And yeah, what a goal. So that so so in answer to your question, we know this is nothing... Liverpool winning games in the last you injury time and in the last yeah five minutes of the normal time is nothing new. They do all the time.
00:18:24
Nick Britten
And they've done it all the time. And they did it on the clock and they did it last year on the slot. It's just a cultural thing where they go and keep going and keep going and keep going. And it is what
00:18:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's what champions do, Nick. It's what champions do.
00:18:33
Nick Britten
is
00:18:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's what United used to do.
00:18:35
Nick Britten
Yeah, and exactly. that's And that's all it is. It's what champions do. You're not you're absolutely right. When Manchester United used to win all those titles, how many late goals did they score? They were never, ever beaten.
00:18:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:18:47
Nick Britten
and and And loads and loads of teams would have just, as it got to you know the 10th minute of injury time, would have just gone, I'm very happy with a 2-2. It's not really been our night, but we'll take a point.
00:19:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah very good.
00:19:01
Nick Britten
They're streaming forward, and they have players streaming forward. I mean, outgun Newcastle in defence, and, know, Rio was stood there on the back post, totally on mark. There's nobody anywhere near him to finish the move.
00:19:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was expecting that and go to Roque, but it went instead in it right into the corner of the net. Now, Global Sports Podcast Network is partnered with Bionique, the world's most personalized supplements, because your body is unique.

00:19:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
So if that's where that leaves Liverpool, if you like, in terms of, you know, that six points out six, Newcastle one point out of six, away at Leeds next.
00:19:55
Nick Britten
what I'm saying. sure what saying. I'm sure what I'm saying.
00:20:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
What... I mean, what's what what does it look like in terms of the next few weeks for Newcastle?
00:20:03
Nick Britten
I'm sure what I'm not what I'm saying.
00:20:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
know there's a lot riding on what happens with these at.
00:20:12
Nick Britten
Last night was ah very curious night for Newcastle United. because It showed the very best of Newcastle as a club, as a city, as a supporter base.

Impact of Injuries and Red Card on Newcastle

00:20:27
Nick Britten
It showed the very, very best of them. You've got a team that, I mean, they were they were by far the better team. Let's not get away from this fact.
00:20:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
year
00:20:36
Nick Britten
Far the better team over 90 minutes. They deserved... something out of it. And of course, the debate.
00:20:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
even down to 10 men they looked like the dominant team didn't they for a long period
00:20:43
Nick Britten
We're the better team throughout the entire game. And and unlesss yeah know let's just just nail that right here, right now. Eddie Howe, I think, and we talked about this the other day, I think the midfield three, when they're all fit and firing of Tonali, Joe Linton and Guimarães is the best midfield in the Premier League.
00:21:00
Nick Britten
And they play with such intensity, backed by such a vociferous crowd. ah show As I say, it showcases everything that's brilliant about the manager, about the team, about the city.
00:21:13
Nick Britten
But it was also the worst night for Newcastle because despite all of that, they came away with no points. They lost the game. And that ultimately is what the league table will say. But they also lost key players. They've lost Anthony Gordon for three games because of his rash behaviour.
00:21:28
Nick Britten
And they've lost Joe Linton to groin injury. And they've also lost Fabian Shah with a facial injury. and Key players, by the way.
00:21:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, massively.
00:21:39
Nick Britten
Absolutely.
00:21:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
well
00:21:40
Nick Britten
and And, sorry, and Tonali with a shoulder injury. Now, talk about that midfield three of Tonali, Joe Linton and Guimaraes.
00:21:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:21:50
Nick Britten
If two of them are suddenly injured, that massively impacts their ability to play the way they play because the midfield is their strongest point. Now, Jacob Ramsey came on and did very well, I thought. He's a good player.
00:22:02
Nick Britten
I like him. but And he'll do well. He'll fit into that midfield. He'll yeah he'll do a okay. But I think those three have a particular kind of superpower amongst them. So in in lots of ways, it couldn't have gone worse for Newcastle, even though they showcased the best of everything they're about and played so well.
00:22:19
Nick Britten
and came back from 2-0 down against the champions so with 10 men to equalise at 2-2. ah Yeah, they lost key players for two different reasons and they lost the game.
00:22:30
Nick Britten
so it could have got much worse in many respects.
00:22:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Starting to look extremely stretched in terms of the squad at Newcastle. Just one final thing, thought, that really follows on from the podcast of the other day.
00:22:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
course, Newcastle are operating without a direct to football at the moment, aren't they, if I understand that correctly? Do you think that's having a significant bearing on their inability to get people over the line in terms of signings?
00:22:54
Nick Britten
It may be. It may do. i mean, they weren't doing that well when Paul Mitchell was there as director of football. and And they've struggled... yeah throughout the summer, and they struggled a bit last year in getting and getting people in.
00:23:07
Nick Britten
I don't know what it is because I think Newcastle should be a main pick over plenty of other teams in the Premier League.
00:23:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Everyone.
00:23:16
Nick Britten
we know We know foreign players have got a lot to go to London, but I Newcastle is ah is a fabulous city which has got a brilliant club to go and play for. So, yeah, I mean, they've missed out on pretty much
00:23:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
everyone
00:23:29
Nick Britten
all their key topics, who they've been after in terms particularly up front.
00:23:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
so that that That would indicate there's something going awry. and just
00:23:39
Nick Britten
Yes, it would, yeah.
00:23:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're one after another after another after another. Just don't get it overlined. If because if it's any other walk of life, any other business that that you were getting that far and not getting the deal done, you start to think there's something wrong with my offering.
00:23:54

Nick Britten
I just think it, I mean, look, in relation to to last night, I think it showed lots of things. It showed that the Liverpool are stuttering, but they're winning.
00:25:04
Nick Britten
And that is what champions do. they've They've been very busy in the market over the summer and I expect them to be ah be be very, very strong this year. I think, however, Arsenal will be looking at this, Chelsea will be looking at this and they'll be going, you know what, we can get at these guys, you know.
00:25:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
And there's a classic coming up this weekend, Liverpool v Arsenal.
00:25:21
Nick Britten
can get at these guys. Yeah, exactly.
00:25:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, so having said that, Liverpool go win that 3-2.
00:25:25
Nick Britten
so also
00:25:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've got some real daylight, haven't they?
00:25:32
Nick Britten
Yes, mean it's it's probably <unk> probably slightly too ah early to start calling games title deciders, but it's got an important feel. And Arsenal, bolstered by the signing of Eze, but missing Saka, so you know there's there's pros and cons to that. But they'll go into it. They'll look at its Liverpool defence and they'll be rubbing their hands. They'll be fancying this.
00:25:51
Nick Britten
But Liverpool will will get stronger after starting start. Newcastle, I just think Eddie Howe has got the touch of the magician about him, whereby he can just send teams out to defy expectations.
00:26:03
Nick Britten
But he's got a job on his hands, and I expect them to be... if i Look, if I'm on his... Listen, if I'm Eddie Howe, I'm banging on the owner's door this morning going, look, look what I've done with what you've given me.
00:26:14
Nick Britten
Look what we can do if you help me out more.
00:26:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:26:18
Nick Britten
That's what I'll be doing.
00:26:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:26:19
Nick Britten
Give me some money. Give me some players. And we can compete in the Champions League. And we can compete in the Premier League because I've shown I can do this.
00:26:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah it's a good place to leave it one thing that we didn't mention which i just ahead have written down ah liverpool susceptible to set pieces it seems to be set pieces that that undid him last night and and i just wonder whether that's you know arsenal is that's going to be something they focus on the weekends you think
00:26:42
Nick Britten
Well, Arsenal focus on set pieces all the time. I mean, that is their absolute primary weapon.
00:26:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah know ah thing isn't it so
00:26:48
Nick Britten
So,
00:26:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
that's going to be an interesting type story
00:26:49
Nick Britten
but wouldn whether Liverpool are susceptible to it as a group or whether it's just individual players not playing particularly well, being off form, having great day, we'll find out on Sunday.
00:27:00
Nick Britten
Because you can guarantee that Arsenal, at any set piece, will put them under pressure.
00:27:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
