Today we will read Daniel Chapter 2. In today's reading the king will be given a dream by God and he will ask for something impossible- for someone to tell him what his dream was before telling him what it means. We will see Daniel go to God and request to be told what the dream was and for understanding of it, all the while acknowledging that it is God alone who knows these things. Daniel said that he was not wiser than anyone else, it was God's choice to reveal these things to him so that the king would know about the dreams that God had sent him.  In our discussion for daily application we will talk about being sure to acknowledge that God is the one who imparts wisdom, opens our eyes, opens our ears, and chooses to whom He will impart wisdom and reveal hidden things. God used those events to move Daniel into the position He wanted Daniel to be in so that Daniel could do the good works God had prepared ahead of time for him to do. In the same way, God uses our circumstances, even when they look  "bad" to move us into positions so that when the time comes we will be there, ready to do the good works God has prepared ahead of time for us to do.

Daniel's Interpretation and Prophetic Insights

00:01:08
Speaker
twenty twenty five
00:01:11
Speaker
So thank you for being here with me as we are going to be reading in the book of Daniel today. And we are going to be covering chapter two. Today we are going to be seeing Daniel's first experience with interpreting a dream for the king.
00:01:26
Speaker
may not have been his very first, but it does it's our first recorded dream that he will be ah interpreting. And we're going to see the great examples that da that Daniel gives us to ah be humble in what God gives us.
00:01:47
Speaker
Because everything we have and everything we are able to do is not by our own power, but it comes from God. And we're going to be seeing Daniel giving God the credit for what he is going to be doing.
00:02:02
Speaker
So we are going to open up in chapter 2, and it is entitled, a Figure in a Dream. Also, ah before I forget, I wanted to let you know that Daniel, the book of Daniel is also full of prophecy, not just full of prophecy for things that would be occurring for the Israelites in exile, but a lot of prophecy about the end times.
00:02:29
Speaker
And we're even going to be seeing a prophecy today about Jesus. So keep those ears open.

The King's Challenge and Daniel's Tact

00:02:39
Speaker
Now King Nebuchadnezzar began to have dreams. He would worry about them and he couldn't sleep. So the king called all his magic men and he said, I had a dream.
00:02:52
Speaker
It troubles me and I want to know what it means. Our king, said the magic men, tell us what the dream is and then we will tell you what it means.
00:03:04
Speaker
Oh, you must tell me what my dream is, said the king, and then tell me what it means. And if you don't, then I will cut you into pieces and I'll tear you down tear down your houses.
00:03:16
Speaker
But if you do tell me, then I will give you gifts and I will make you great.
00:03:23
Speaker
First, tell us the dream, they said, and then we can tell you what it means. You are just trying to get more time, said the king. You plan to trick me, and you hope I will change my mind.
00:03:37
Speaker
But if you don't tell me your my dream, you will be in trouble. And then I will show you. So just tell me my dream, and then I will know that you can tell me what it means.
00:03:51
Speaker
Nobody in the world can do that, said the men. No king ever has asked their magic men to do something like this. It's too hard. Nobody but the gods can tell you your dream, and the gods don't live with mortal people.
00:04:08
Speaker
And this made the king very angry. So he ordered all the wise men to be killed. Daniel and his friends were wise men, and so they were going to be killed too.
00:04:22
Speaker
The captain of the guard started to look for the men so he could kill them. But Daniel

Divine Revelation and Interpretation

00:04:28
Speaker
was very wise. Our big Bible says that he spoke with tact and discretion.
00:04:37
Speaker
And he talked to the captain. Why did the king order this? He asked. The captain told Daniel what had happened. And then Daniel went to the king.
00:04:48
Speaker
He asked the king for a little time because he wanted to find out what the king's dream meant. So Daniel went back home and he told his three friends about it.
00:05:00
Speaker
He asked them to pray to God about this. They wanted to help so they wouldn't be killed with the other wise men. And that night, God showed Daniel a picture of the king's dream.
00:05:14
Speaker
God told Daniel what it meant. Then Daniel praised God. Praise God's name forever. He is wise.
00:05:26
Speaker
He has all power. He makes kings and he gets rid of kings. He gives people their wise thoughts. He shows people things that were hidden.
00:05:38
Speaker
He knows what's in the dark. I thank you, God, and I praise you. You made me wise and strong. You showed me what we asked for.
00:05:52
Speaker
You showed us the king's dream.
00:05:57
Speaker
So Daniel went to the captain of the guard and he said, don't kill the wise men. Take me to see the king and I will tell him about his dream. So the captain took Daniel to the king and he said, here is a man from Judah. He can tell you what your dream means.
00:06:17
Speaker
Can you tell me what my dream was? Asked the king. And can you tell me what it means? No wise man or magic man can tell you, said Daniel.
00:06:30
Speaker
But there is a God in heaven. He shows us things that we don't understand. He shows us now and he is showing you what is going to happen.
00:06:44
Speaker
Here is your dream. You were lying down and you started thinking about things that are going to happen. And God showed this to me. And it's not because I am wiser than the others. It's so you can know and understand this dream.
00:07:04
Speaker
You saw a big figure in front of you. It was huge and wonderful. Its head was gold and its chest and arms were silver.
00:07:15
Speaker
Its middle was brown metal and its legs were iron. Its feet were part iron and part clay. You saw a rock hit the figure on its feet and the feet broke.
00:07:33
Speaker
Then the iron, clay, brown metal, silver and gold broke. They were like dry grass on a barn floor.
00:07:45
Speaker
The wind blew them away and nothing was left. But the rock grew and grew and it became a huge mountain.
00:07:57
Speaker
It filled the earth. That was your dream. Now I will tell you what it means. You are the greatest king.
00:08:09
Speaker
God gave you power and made you great. he put you in charge of people, animals, and birds. You rule over them and you are the figure's gold head.
00:08:25
Speaker
But another kingdom will come after you and it won't be as great. And then another kingdom will come. And that is what the brown medal stands for.
00:08:36
Speaker
It will rule the whole world. Then another kingdom will come and it will be as strong as iron. Iron can break everything into pieces.
00:08:49
Speaker
And this kingdom will break all the others.
00:08:55
Speaker
You saw that the feet and toes were iron and clay. So the next kingdom will have two parts. Part of it will be strong and part of it will be weak.
00:09:09
Speaker
The people will not all agree and they won't stay together.
00:09:16
Speaker
Then God will set up a new kingdom and it will last for forever. It will break down all the other kingdoms.
00:09:28
Speaker
That's what the rock stood for. That rock was cut from a mountain, but it was not cut by people's hands.

Acknowledgment of God's Supremacy

00:09:38
Speaker
It broke the iron, brown metal, clay, silver, and gold.
00:09:47
Speaker
The great God just showed you what is going to happen. This dream is true, and you can trust that it means what I said.
00:10:00
Speaker
Then the king bowed to David and said good things about him. He sent for a gift to give to Daniel. And he said, I am sure that your God is the God of gods.
00:10:12
Speaker
He is the Lord of kings. And he is the one who shows what is hidden. I know that's true because you were able to tell me my dream.
00:10:25
Speaker
The king gave Daniel many gifts and he put Daniel in charge of Babylon. he put Daniel in charge of all the wise men. Daniel asked the king to let his three friends help him.

Discussion on Divine Influence and Tact

00:10:39
Speaker
So the king let Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego help Daniel rule, and Daniel stayed on as one of the king's special friends.
00:10:50
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today.
00:10:54
Speaker
Isn't that amazing? Yesterday we talked about how God was putting Daniel exactly where he was supposed to be so that when the time came, he would be able to do exactly what he was supposed to do.
00:11:11
Speaker
And what I love about Daniel is that he speaks with tact and he is careful when he speaks.
00:11:22
Speaker
And I absolutely love that he realizes that he's not the one who knows things. He only knows things because God has told him.
00:11:34
Speaker
When we are tempted to think that we are wise about things, we need to remember that it is the Holy Spirit who gives us wisdom.
00:11:45
Speaker
is God who tells us what we want to know or need to know. And it is only through God giving us this information that we are able to know.
00:11:56
Speaker
Otherwise, we have read that God closes our eyes so that we can't see, and he closes our ears so that we cannot hear. And he can open our eyes or close them when and if he chooses.
00:12:11
Speaker
So Daniel, when he has come into this situation, where the the king has ordered that all the wise men should be put to death.
00:12:23
Speaker
He first goes to his goes to the person and says, I need to find out what happened. Then he goes to the king and he requests more time so that he can try and do what the king wants him to do.
00:12:37
Speaker
But he knows that it's not going to be him who does it. It will be God if God chooses to do it. Then he goes to his friends and he asks them to pray.
00:12:50
Speaker
We too need to be sure that we pray and not just expect things to happen. God wants us to come to him in prayer. And we've learned about that this year as well.
00:13:02
Speaker
God wants us to ask. He knows what we want or need before we ask it. But it's important that we come to him and ask, just like Hezekiah who asked for additional time for his life.
00:13:16
Speaker
And because he asked, he received. And we have read elsewhere that when people did not ask, God has specifically said, because you did not come to me and ask for my help, you're not going to have it.
00:13:32
Speaker
So we see here that Daniel is being faithful and obedient to God. And he is living out his faith by asking God. And so God responded.
00:13:45
Speaker
And as soon as God gave him this information, Daniel praised God. So we need to be remembering to thank God when he gives us what we are looking for so that we recognize that it is from him.
00:14:01
Speaker
is not because we are wise. I love how Daniel said that God showed this to me, and it's not because I am wiser than the others.
00:14:12
Speaker
It is so you can know and understand this dream. So God was working in the heart of Nebuchadnezzar. God uses everybody. And it is just wonderful to see that, don't you think?
00:14:28
Speaker
God used Nebuchadnezzar. and put in him a spirit of distrust of the magic men, or maybe that was wisdom, to know that it was possible for them to trick him, to just tell him whatever they wanted to tell him.
00:14:44
Speaker
And God didn't just give him ah a prophecy like he did the king of Egypt for Joseph, where he told him about ah lean years and profitable years, where there would be famine and and a great harvest so that he could prepare.
00:15:01
Speaker
God gave Nebuchadnezzar prophecy about things that would happen in the future, all the way down to the end times. He gave him a prophecy about Jesus.
00:15:13
Speaker
Did you hear that prophecy about Jesus? Jesus is the rock that grows into a mountain and that takes down all the other nations.
00:15:25
Speaker
We know that when Jesus

Encouragement to Share and Exemplify Faith

00:15:26
Speaker
comes back, he will rule and he will rule from Jerusalem, from Zion. And this is what God is showing him.
00:15:37
Speaker
And so Daniel is explaining to him that none of this is for his benefit. It was to show the king what was going to happen. And what this did was this then continued ah to put Daniel in the places where he would need to be so that God could use him to do more work.
00:15:58
Speaker
And so God's always in charge and we see that. So we need to remember that God is always in charge of everything that we are experiencing.
00:16:09
Speaker
No matter what events are happening in the world, God is still in charge. And it is only through him and his wisdom if he chooses to reveal things to us.
00:16:21
Speaker
So we're not to think that we are wiser than anybody else.
00:16:28
Speaker
So let's see if there was anything else here.
00:16:34
Speaker
think that is
00:16:38
Speaker
Well, I hope that you feel that God has lit your light and that you have found daily application in today's reading with giving God the glory for when he teaches us what we need to know with his Holy Spirit.
00:16:51
Speaker
And i hope that you are sharing this event with somebody or talking about these things that you learn with other people so that we can point the way to God and be examples of how to be faithful and obedient and honoring to God and giving thanks to God for the things that he reveals to us so that others will see these behaviors and we can point other people to God since we are the light of the world and we are meant to point everybody to our heavenly father and Jesus.
00:17:23
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today for our amazing reading in January chapter two, and I will be here for everyone again tomorrow.
