Introduction & iOS 17 Discussion

00:01:25
Speaker
Hey, welcome everyone. What's going on? What? Not too much. ah Welcome to another episode. Episode 142. We are going to first talk about the new iOS 17 that released this week. Got a brand new iOS for your phone. um If you have an iPhone, we're going to talk about all the features that came out this week. um and What I noticed first off was the Photos app had a complete overhaul.
00:01:54
Speaker
um Basically that's what it looks like. um All streamlined, all completely, all on one page. Yeah, it looks good. um Next thing is the Calendar app, completely changed as well, simplified. Also, they added the ability to see your reminders. If you have reminders like we do for our calendar awesomeness, um it's all in a part of your calendar now.
00:02:26
Speaker
um Yeah, so it's pretty cool to actually be able to see the movies are coming up or anything that we're geekily, geekily obsessed over like next Wednesday's Mr. McMahon documentary. The home screen completely changed completely changed as well. You're able to move apps anywhere you want, not just in rows. You can put two on the bottom if you want, all separately from everything else.
00:02:49
Speaker
You can also resize the widgets right directly on the screen, so if you want to make it smaller or larger to take up the whole screen, you can. Also, you can go on the right there, you can go everything dark mode. All the apps and everything turned to a black instead of having the standard white that we've or green that we've had for years. um And I also noticed that the calendar the calculator app changed completely. You can see the whole equations on there. I never used to be able to see that.
00:03:14
Speaker
Um, of course my think he's moving here. Um, and, um, CarPlay as you can see, the cover art is bigger. Everything is pushed to the left side, all the controls for pause and 15 seconds skipping and rewind. Um, it's all pushed over to the left compact on that side. So.
00:03:37
Speaker
I also noticed that the volume was a little louder listening into the car. I don't know if that had anything to do with the update or not, but it could be because I used to listen to it on 20 and now I'm listening it to it on 15 and it's just loud enough. Oh, nice. That should be good.
00:03:49
Speaker
there are all volume and issues and times Yeah, yeah. Overall, um I do like it. I like the dark mode. I put it on dark mode immediately. I also like being able to rearrange. I've rearranged my whole entire phone in the last couple of days. I put apps in new places. I've updated the widgets, made them bigger, added new ones, deleted some that I didn't like before. but Being able to have that full control is almost like having a desktop on your in your pocket, finally. Getting little little little by little, we're getting closer to having the actual Mac in our pocket instead of just having an iPhone. I think eventually it's all gonna there's not going to be really a bridge there, it's all going to be the same.

Music & TV Shows Update

00:04:27
Speaker
Before we get into what we watched this week, Metallica. Kevin, I don't know, I know you're working in June, but
00:04:35
Speaker
I think we may need to go to one of these dates. They're coming back with the M72 tour third for the third year in a row. um they have They have eight shows that are no repeat weekends where they play nothing the second night that they play the first night and so on and so forth.
00:04:53
Speaker
however They're being opened by Limp Bizkit. This is a 90s kid's dream. And Pantera and suicidal tendencies on the second night. They're going to be in Tampa on June 6th and 8th.
00:05:08
Speaker
Circle that date on your calendar, Kevin, although you're working. Um, they're going to be in Columbus, Ohio, and a few other places, Philadelphia, but, um, from everybody that I know, I know you had a friend that went got in the snake pit. We've been there. I'm talking about this last, uh, this last world tour of the no repeat weekend one. Didn't you have a, didn't, um, Ben went to the back stage and met them all. Um, yeah, there, those tickets were like 20 grand each.
00:05:36
Speaker
Yeah, I heard they were expensive and the snake pit, I remember he was right up to the front and they have a whole bunch of cool stuff going on with their concerts now, but tickets are expensive, ridiculously expensive and you're traveling too, but mark that in your calendars if we win the lottery, I don't want to bring that up. What we watched this week Watch quite a bit. um Briefly going to talk about only murders in the building. I don't want to talk about it because you're not watching it and then there's not much to really say besides just watch it. It's a good show. um we're on seat We're on season four of the show. It's already picked up for next season. um It's very good. um Same with the Rings of Power. Not much to say about that as well. um You already know that they're making the the Rings of Men. um We do get a quick cameo of of the creature that takes Frodo in the water at the gates of Moria.
00:06:25
Speaker
In the Fellowship of the Ring, we guess we see that creature. um We see the orcs finally attacking a Aragon. argan arrgen or whatever um Under Sauron's gaze, he's watching everything from from the top of the towers. He's still manipulating Celebrimmor who's making all the rings at the Forge.
00:06:46
Speaker
um And Sauron said the thing a bunch of times, precious, which sent IGN and a frenzy and they're saying, why does he have to say precious so many fucking times? But um yeah, great show. I think it's good. A lot of people are complaining about it, but they complained about season one too.
00:07:03
Speaker
um You're gonna get the same complaints for season two um because it's not Peter Jackson number one and number two I believe they can't even touch the Lord of the Rings books or the Hobbit books. No, they can't. It's a similitarian and they can only touch all the other non-rings books. but um So let's get into another show that debuted this week.
00:07:26
Speaker
Agatha O'Long, a new MCU show, the spin-off slash sequel to Wandavision starring Katherine Hahn as Agatha the Witch. um I thought this show is getting mixed reviews. I thought the show was fantastic. I thought the horror element was great. There's ah there's a couple of jump scares that literally jumped me because I was watching it at night right before bed. But episode what there was two episodes did that debuted.
00:07:52
Speaker
Um, episode one, following the WandaVision formula, was a spin-off, kind of like, true blood slash mayor of Easttown. Um, whereas a spoof, uh, like her being a detective, trying to figure out who this body that they find in the woods, if you see in the trailer, it's hinted to that it's Wanda. Well, sure enough, it's Wanda. Not sure how the body was put there, not even sure if this is a real reality. I don't think it is, I think this is kind of all, like, in her imagination, because if you remember the end of WandaVision,
00:08:20
Speaker
um She's stuck in this hex in Westview. After she fucked up everything, Wanda turned into the Scarlet Witch. um She got stuck there in prison for three years. Wanda was killed, so the hex cannot be broken. There's a witch dead, the hex cannot be broken because the witch was the w was killed. It created it. So the the first episode was all of about her breaking out. um And her investigating this body that she finds um We end up meeting Aubrey Plaza's mystery character. We still don't really know who she is. We know she's a witch of some kind, um but Agatha ends up breaking free of the Hex with the help of a new character brought up called Teen. um We'll get into that in episode two, but there this show, for I'm surprised for an MCU show on Disney+, already has nudity.
00:09:16
Speaker
already talks about jade eggs and kegels. already talking a lot about lesbian stuff. like There's one scene where Wanda and Aubrey Pla- I'm not Wanda, Agatha and Aubrey Plaza completely almost have a lesbian showdown in the middle of her living room. um And there's a really sexy scene, I'm sure that there's gifts going all around, where she cuts Agatha's hand, puts it up to her and licks it and the wound goes away. Very hot actually. um But Agatha in this episode assembles a witch's coven. to travel the witches road and when you get to the end of the witches road you can pretty much get whatever you want i don't know if this i don't know if it's like i really don't understand it i never read the comic book i don't know anything about this is all new um but it's to get her powers back because she's lost her power since everything happened
00:10:05
Speaker
Um, and Joe Locke, who is this character playing Teen, um, he's a mystery character, and every time in the show he's trying to tell Agatha about his past and who he is, his lips literally get sealed. At one point they're driving in a car.
00:10:21
Speaker
and he's telling her who he is and he gets muted and all the other sounds around her are still going on like the car radio is happening but you can't hear what he's saying a very cool visual thing that happened in that but the horror of the the horror element of the show is being teased um we're only two episodes in out of nine um we have single episodes all the way up until Halloween day and then there's gonna be a two episode finale Halloween on I think October 30th but um Overall, I liked it a lot, um and of course, like WandaVision three or four years ago, the Mephisto shit was everywhere in this episode.

MCU & DC Shows Speculation

00:10:59
Speaker
hints to and At one point, Aubrey Plaza calls herself Blackheart.
00:11:05
Speaker
um In the comic books, I guess that is the son of Mephisto. His name is Blackheart. And of course, Mephisto was the big thing with WandaVision. Everybody thought Mephisto was everywhere. So we're not we're not really sure about that. But overall, I loved it. And I can't wait to watch it next next week when the next episode debuts.
00:11:23
Speaker
Another episode debuted last night. I thought this was fantastic too. A DC and got Marvel first night. Second night we got DC and we got the Penguin coming back. It's been off of the Batman. Robert Pattinson's Batman. ah court met Of course, Matt Reeves. We talk about it on the podcast all the time.
00:11:39
Speaker
Um, episode one debut, uh, weird because the episode debuted last night on Thursday and we're not going to get another episode for another nine days. It's going to be debuting on Sundays next week on the 29th, but we'll talk about it in a couple of weeks. Um, number one slush puppies, my favorite slush puppies over ICs any day.
00:12:02
Speaker
Yeah, or Slurpee, whatever, yeah. ah Or over anything, yeah, anything. yeah Slush puppies are double. I had a kid text me this morning and he was like, why doesn't this show have like, the like you thought slush puppies and slurpees were the same thing and I had to explain to him like, the slush puppies had a little bit more liquid, they were a little bit sweeter, there was more syrup involved. um Yeah, I miss blue raspberry slush puppies were the best. And it was actually it was actual ice crystals too, like the slushies were foamy, and I'm not a big huge fan of ice season slushies, but yeah um At one point Oswald goes into or Oz goes into a car a CD is playing and 9 to 5 the song by Dolly Parton starts playing I thought that was funny as fuck and of course the credits played that too um The kid in the room, I have a picture of him here in the notes um Recognizable because he's in hook. He's a little kid in hook and one of the lost boys um He plays one of the henchmen for Falcone daughter
00:13:01
Speaker
Um, it kind of sitting at the board room there, but overall I thought the episode was great. yeah i was right Two things I want to talk about is another, they're growing viral completely on, on social. Um, this was a notification from Gotham PD about safety.
00:13:18
Speaker
because there's a lot of shit going on in Gotham. Now, this is set up right after the Batman, the whole show. um If you've seen the Batman, you know that the city was flooded. So it's all the aftermath of that. There's a lot of refugees in the city that they don't have homes because everything was flooded out. I thought it was did a great job depicting that. The other thing I want to talk about is being a paper boy. I think on the podcast we talked about back in 2015 when I got the yeah back of the future, we had that on the show. Well, the Boston Globe came out with the this this week um of course it's not going to show uh we showed it last week the gotham gazette well they have they have the full thing on here i got one for each of us actually i have five extras too if we want to sell them to people um but the whole thing right yeah the the full the whole thing is a pullout fuck i'm trying to get it without
00:14:07
Speaker
without doing it but it opens up has all the whole articles built in there um has a back page too i'll fake articles about the this world so ah very cool and then next time i see you i'll give you yours yeah a couple things i liked from the episode is the um the kind of owed to Jason Todd, yeah where if Batman had caught that kid, it would have been Jason Todd. And also the amount of humor in it. Like you said, when he gets in the car and he starts playing it, plus like, yeah, the kids like constantly on his like tippy toes. And he's always like, kid, would you relax like that? Like, I would just blow little things into that are very um subtle, but they're very funny. Similar to the way that Batman was with like thumb drive, stuff like that. Um, yeah, overall, they definitely cooked with this show.
00:14:51
Speaker
Yeah, I can't wait to see you in the next episode. um definitely Definitely sets you up for one to see more. um Another show debuted on Netflix. I have not watched the whole thing. I don't know how far. Did you end up finishing Twilight of the Gods? Episode five, I think. I'm on episode three. I'm on episode three. I think it's good, too. The animation style is weird. um You get used to it, though. Yeah, it is weird. However, I was surprised within five minutes of seeing a huge animated dong hanging down past the guy's knees.
00:15:21
Speaker
how r-rated r-rated i had no idea how r-rated this actually was but it's bloody oh yeah it's raunchy sexy as hell um zach snedder directed every single episode i occurre to think no correct only one okay like the first and the last um that's why the first episode's so good because he didn't write any of it he's basically a producer or a director on it um jay olivia is the one that basically is the showrunner for it and jay olivia of course was involved with snedder with the uh the dc stuff OK, OK, overall, I think it's good. on Animation style is weird, but I'm not. I haven't watched a real good animated thing in a very long time. Well, Terminator Zero was great. Oh, that was good. Yeah. One thing that is weird about Snyder, too, I've noticed every time he has a project coming out.
00:16:10
Speaker
he fucking posts a picture from his DC stuff saying, I don't think I showed you guys this, this time it was a ah fucking storyboard from his Justice League, where they said Joker holding the the card and his Batman holding the card. So people were like, oh my God, Joker, Batman's just seen Joker, Joker doesn't exist. And I'm like, why are you fucking...
00:16:31
Speaker
why Why is he edging his fan base still? He's been gone since 2017. He's edging his fan base. It's kind of pissing me off as a fan of his. Every time he releases a product, a project, he has a non- It's because he knows his fans will eat rough, but he releases something that has nothing to do with the project. He just posts a photo on his Vero account of like stuff he was doing with DC. It's very annoying as a fan of his. The most volatile fan base is the Sonata Reverse people. We talk about it all the time.
00:16:59
Speaker
Star Wars up there too. We had Star Wars Star Wars is pretty bad too, especially because it's been rebooted so many times but yep Snyder can't do no wrong and that means even his bad movies are getting rave reviews and bad things that he comes out with is getting rave reviews when they also completely horrible Also because Twilight of the Gods is actually having good Rotten Tomatoes scores. Now his fan base for the first time in fucking 15 years is able to say, see? And like you just spent 15 years sitting around Tomatoes doesn't mean anything and now it means something because you're moving your goalposts here people. But um yeah, overall Twilight of the Gods is excellent. um yeah Really enjoying it. The story sounds good.
00:17:37
Speaker
I'm not a huge fan of this type of mythology, but uh, it's good. Yeah, I mean, um put whether service something into you so yeah right if all these characters are familiar. If you've seen Thor. ye Um, so that was it for the new shows that came out.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Legacy

00:17:53
Speaker
We're going to be watching these for the next few weeks. I think the next one that'll be finale would be, um, uh, rings of power in a couple of weeks. We still have their finale, but um So I decided I didn't have anything to watch this week and we've been talking about turtles a lot lately Especially when we talked about toys that made us a couple months ago um I wanted to get into the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies. I haven't watched now The legacy of Ninja Turtles for us, of course, we talked about it a little bit with with toys that made us but the action figures were huge this year is actually the 40th anniversary of Ninja Turtles it happened to the Back in the springtime and they put a new we talk about it all the time. They put the new the landmark symbol Landmark symbol up in Dover, New Hampshire where we where were close by where I'm literally five minutes away um it's It's a sewer grate with the Ninja Turtles on it all you see it on the ground They also have a landmark sign up there talking about the Ninja Turtles. I i haven't been there yet. I only live five minutes away, but
00:18:54
Speaker
Um, so it's a big, huge part of not only our childhoods, but just the area in general. Everybody talks about Ninja Turtles, the guys who created it. Um, Eastman's always up here signing shit all the time. Lierd's kind of retired from everything. Um, he sold his rights back in 2011 or 20, uh, 2009. I think sold his entire, the tire in Ninja Turtles to Nickelodeon. That's why we're getting all these movies now and while we get started getting them, um, in 2014 with the reboot of Michael Bay's Ninja Turtles movies. We're gonna get into it in a minute, but.
00:19:23
Speaker
Um, but we had the action figures. We watched the cartoon. Um, we had the video game, the arcade game on the Nintendo. I had that in super Mario. Those are my first two games on the original and NES. Um, but the 1990 motion picture and the two sequels after especially secret of the use were just huge in our childhoods. We were right in the, right in the prime of our childhood. We were six.
00:19:47
Speaker
eight between the two movies. The first one definitely they don't really hold up as much but I do like the first one. My nose is moving around.
00:20:03
Speaker
But the the second one, I mean, ninja the Ninja Rap song with Vanilla Ice, um Ernie, the Asian kid who becomes friends with the Turtles, who I think the first movie was Donatello under the costume. I can't remember. He was one of the Turtles in the first movie. Yeah, I think it was Donatello. Yeah, I ended up playing a main character in the second movie. um And of course, Super Shredder, who was played by Kevin Nash, the wrestler Kevin Nash, um which we didn't know about till later. but um But yeah, just ah just a great, even though they're even though the movies are campy, of course, a capsule in time when we were in our childhood, um just still resonates with us, weirdly. um To a point where, I mean, we're older now, took me a while to watch these movies, 10 years to be exact, because this movie came out in 2014, but Michael Bay came back, produced,
00:20:53
Speaker
the remake of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles after Transformers became a huge success they were looking for more IP especially Nickelodeon bringing bringing this new brand that they they purchased from Leard who owned the whole entire thing Eastman ended up selling his um his part of the thing and then Leard sold everything he didn't want anything to do with Turtles anymore and gave the reins to Nickelodeon to do practically whatever they wanted with it um so he came in re redid the turtles from the ground up. First thing they did is they hired Megan Fox to play April O'Neill. Will Arnett just came out of SNL at the time. He he became a part of the cast. Will B Goldberg had a quick cameo as as the the lead of the news department at the news station.
00:21:38
Speaker
um Abby Elliott, who's the sister and the bear. she She was in this right out right out of SNL. um William Fisher, he's a character actor. You've seen him in everything. He plays Eric Sacks. Alan Richardson was the voice of Raphael, of course. He's the reacher now. Noel Fisher, Mickey from Shameless, was the voice of Michelangelo. um Johnny Knoxville was the voice of Leonardo. And Tony Shalhoub was the voice of Master Splinter.
00:22:04
Speaker
um Cameo from Kevin Eastman as a doctor in the movie and Carmelo Anthony was in it as well. A few other people. um In this movie, the Foot Clan have machine guns. I thought that was kind of weird. um The Foot Clan also have these weird like like satin masks. They're they're weird. i didn't I don't like the Foot Clan in this movie.
00:22:25
Speaker
um Also I don't like April O'Neill's origins were kind of mixed with the Ninja Turtles in this. It was retconned. I didn't like that as well where her father was the one that kind of created the the ooze that turned them into turtles. And she was also the one that named them when when she was a younger kid. I didn't like that.
00:22:43
Speaker
um Shredder looks like a mutated Swiss army knife, a direct quote in the notes that I put there. He literally has all these knives coming out of him. I thought that looked fucking weird. um The turtle van, um legit at the end of this movie, was just for the action figure line. It looked exactly like the one that was in that we had growing up. I remember having a shot in my swine line. line that shot pizzas and actually it actually happened in the second movie. yeah um Another case of creativity versus studio influence, and you can get definitely get that from these movies, especially in the older ones too, where they're trying to do the action figures. This is all for kids now. um These are adults. We're adults talking about a kid's property.
00:23:27
Speaker
For something that we're we love growing up, but it's not made for us anymore um money action figures come first over quality quality basically we've talked about that before but um CGI in 2015 I thought the turtles looked okay, but The practical effects in 1990, when you first saw the Ninja Turtles on, I think I saw that movie, the first dinge Ninja Turtles movies in the theater in 1990. They were on the screen, it looked fucking cool. Raphael with a trench coat, the and the with the hat, everything, the fedora, it just looked awesome.
00:24:00
Speaker
um So I decided to go go further into this watch, go into 2016. There's a sequel to this movie, Out of the Shadows. 2016 did not do as well as as the first one. First one kind of did okay. Second one did not do well.
00:24:15
Speaker
um Most of the cast returned except for Johnny Knoxville, he did not do the voice of Leonardo. um And the casting got even stranger. In this one we see Bebop and Rocksteady for the first time in live action. Rocksteady played by Seamus from the WWE. Strange casting right there.
00:24:38
Speaker
Also the first time in live action we see the alien Krang. If you remember the animated series, Krang was this big purple ah pink blob that lived inside this robot. The big giant 7-8 feet tall robot. He was in the middle of its abdomen.
00:24:56
Speaker
controlling it like ah like a robot and he was the he was kind of like the leader of the foot. close he with shredder Wasn't he a brain? Wasn't he a brain? He looks like a brain. He's an alien. Even in this, he's an alien from Dimension X or something. um Even in this, he's that he's voiced by Brad Garrett from Everybody Loves Raymond. um Tyler Perry plays backter Baxter Stockman, who ends up being the fly guy in the animated series um they didn't actually do that we'll talk about that in a minute but fan casting for a fan favorite um character Casey Jones who was in the original Ninja Turtles movies played by Stephen Amell right during the hype of Arrow um Stephen Amell came in played Casey Jones of course he wears the hockey mask he has the skates he has the hockey stick that was his weapon he also has like a rugby stick too or something
00:25:50
Speaker
um In this movie the very beginning Kevin Eastman comes back plays a pizza guy named Kevin The turtle van is now a turtle dump truck and then they like you mentioned in the first one This is the one that actually shot the sewer manhole covers as projectiles in the beginning of the movie Um, the movie had dimension portals, um, Krang of course, his robot body was in this, and the technodrome, which was a big, huge action figure shaped like the Death Star, where Krang and the foot soldiers and Shredder all had their, had their underground layer or out off ground layer, where they all hid in, in
00:26:33
Speaker
Plotted their next move against the Ninja Turtles and that shows up in this as well um Bebop and Rocksteady I thought looked pretty good considering what this movie was Sheamus is weird to hear the voice coming out of Rocksteady, but hey, whatever um in this movie Casey Jones was a security guard turned vigilante after um he lost bebop and Rocksteady who were in his guard as as a security guard they in the in the escaped and um There's an updated theme song in the credits, a theme song from the animated series, which was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles blah blah blah. um This movie was better reviewed, I liked it actually after I read that, but it failed at the box office.
00:27:16
Speaker
um ah third A third film was planned. Eventually scrapped, Baxter Stockman's Fly transformation was planned in that cancelled sequel. um And yeah, other than that, it was it was it was done. It was just did not do good at the box office. um Studio signed off on another reboot, not to not too long ago. This time animated and produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Of course, they've done a lot of movies up until then.
00:27:46
Speaker
called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem. This came out ah last year, 2023. I remember you talked about the animation. I remember you talked about the animation style being weird. um Also a ripoff of, of course, Spider-Verse a little bit. yeah Although you also got those lines that in the original Ninja Turtles comic book,
00:28:06
Speaker
The way that Eastman drew the lines on there, or Leonard, I can't remember who was the artist, I think it was Eastman, but the lines the lines were prominent in the in the artwork for the Ninja Turtles, and they did show that kind of in the artwork for the animation style in this, which I thought was pretty cool. Again, this was definitely made for kids. and In fact,

The turtles were de-aged. They were teenagers when they weren't ever really teenagers before. This time they were played by actual teenagers doing the voices for this. um All unknowns as well, so we don't know any of the names. um Jackie Chan was splinter. John Carlo Esposito played a little quick cameo as Baxter Stockman in the beginning. um EO Whatever from The Bear played April O'Neill. They changed the race into an African-American woman.
00:28:56
Speaker
um John Cena plays Rocksteady, Seth Rogen played Bebop, who by the way in this movie were not really bad guys. I don't know if that's gonna set up in the second and in the second movie or not, whether there's gonna be a sequel to this. Rose Byrne played Leatherhead, the villain of this movie was Superfly played by Ice Cube, um Paul Rudd played a comeicic comedic character called Mondo Gecko,
00:29:19
Speaker
Post Malone did a character called rifle a Hannibal Burris did gangus frog Maya Rudolph was the kind of semi-villain of this called still is Cynthia Ultram, which I don't know who that is either but um Soundtrack was New York 90s hip-hop and pop um There's a quick in ninja ninja rap vanilla ice Easter egg in this a mix of Ninja Turtles retcon actual teenager origin, which we've never seen um Also a weaker discipline from Splinter. You don't get that same discipline that we saw in the movies and in prior Ninja Turtles where they were disciplined for all the stuff that they were doing. they were It was ah like a ninja discipline for them. um All before the Foot Clan. No Foot Clan in this. All before our channel 6 news.
00:30:05
Speaker
And all before Shredder, which was the after-credits scene, we see Shredder looking over the city, um TCRI's following up a tease of what they're going to be doing in the sequel, and Shredder's looking over the city and talking about he needs to make turtle soup or whatever he says. but ah Overall, very good movie, not our demographic.
00:30:26
Speaker
um but Ninja Turtles just plays a huge part in our lives as as kids. So I did want to do this watch I'm gonna get over to Dover eventually and go see that that sewer great in the Landmarker over there. I do want to see it in person Because it's just a huge part huge partner life growing up. Um, the action figures alone and everything um and last part of this, of course, they're gonna be making a sequel to mutant mayhem. They actually have an animated show on Paramount right now, which I have not watched
00:30:57
Speaker
Um, but they are going to be doing a sequel to that, but they're also doing another live action movie. They've already announced this, um, called the last Ronin, which we've talked about on the show before, um, set in a futuristic dystopian future where all of the Ninja Turtles, except for one have perished. Um, and they're, and the last Ninja Turtle who survives has all of their weapons, carrying all their weapons. He's on a revenge task to seek revenge for whoever killed all the turtles and who killed splinter, I believe.
00:31:27
Speaker
and all of his friends and everybody that he knew and loved. Don't know much more about that. um Eastman came back and wrote it. lear It was a story that they had in the 80s. That's the only thing I know about it. He came back about 10 years or five years ago and wrote this story for the last rodent. And yeah, I can't wait. Rumor, fan speculation I saw online is Dane Tahine.
00:31:50
Speaker
Playing the character whoever this turtle is I still don't know i've I've been purposely I didn't want to do any research for the last Ronin cuz I don't know want to know who that last turtle is Because all the turtles have a different personality if it's Michelangelo that changes the whole story if it's Roth the L Changes the whole story Donatello is the nerd changes the whole story wherever the Ronin is you don't know the last Ronin So I'm kind of staying away from it as much as I can. I didn't even want a Wikipedia because I was afraid I was going to see who it was. But I'm looking forward to see how seeing how that plays out. And I'm not sure I think I'm going to wait to read the comic book until after the movie comes out. But yeah, we'll definitely review. Yeah. Very excited about that. We are in week three of football movies.

Movies & Cultural Impact

00:32:30
Speaker
This week I decided to watch a movie. I did not know it was a TV made for TV movie, but it's called Brian's Song.
00:32:36
Speaker
um a ABC made this in 1971. It was made for a madefor TV movie. True story of NFL player Brian Piccolo. He played in the 1965-1969 seasons for the Bears. He'd been diagnosed with terminal cancer and his friendship with fellow Chicago Bears teammate Gail Sayers who ended up ah writing the story that this this movie was based off of. He ended up staying by his side until his death in 1970.
00:33:03
Speaker
um And then they made this a year later, this movie. The movie starred James Cahn as Brian Piccolo, Billy Dee Williams way before Lando, um who played his friend Gail Sayers, the author of the story, um Jack Warden. i mean He's a character actor. Of course, he was in Dirty Work.
00:33:20
Speaker
um he was in all the problem child movies he's in a whole bunch of movies too besides those two movies but um dick buckets plays it the chicago bear set a cameo in this um but yeah i thought it was really good and it was only like an hour and 15 minutes it was a really quick watch which i was thankful for after everything i watched this week um well it was made for tv so it was like two hours on tv and then we made it in the 90s so But I I A lot of character actors that you know that you've seen in other movies too. The movie's okay. It's campy. It's just ah just one of those comedy football movies if you want to see something funny. So next week is the last week of football movies and we're going to be watching Friday Night Lights, a movie that you have been wanting me to get into the TV show for a while. I have not seen the movie movie since theaters. So I've seen the TV show probably three times over since it came out. So this is I'm really looking forward to this. I might watch it tonight.
00:34:33
Speaker
Cool, now I'm actually just thinking of the Washington 8 tonight, Friday night. So um Friday night lights came out what, 2000, 2001, something like that? Probably 2001, we're in high school, so. Okay. it's not one thousand to yeah That'll be the last football movie. And then we'll get into October and we're gonna lot of shit talk about in October. We'll get into that next week. This week we decided, we decided it on the podcast last week that we're gonna talk about, cause we're trying, and were we're gonna get to this road.
00:35:01
Speaker
A bumpy road that kind of ends, oh kind of big begin rile bumpy but it begins on a very cool, very nostalgic way, a very high note and it goes down. This is not, this is not a happy road, but the beginning of the road is fantastic. Um, we're going to talk about all about the crow tonight.
00:35:21
Speaker
Or today, whenever you're listening to this. um Of course, starring Brendan Lee. We all know the tragedy that happens. We'll we'll get into that. and We'll get into all the facts of the movie, but he plays Eric Dreven. Ernie Hudson plays a police officer right after Ninja, no, not right after Ninja, right after Ghostbusters.
00:35:39
Speaker
um Michael Wincott, we me played, we talked about him a couple weeks ago. He's so good in everything. Yeah, when we were talking about Alien, Alien 3? Yeah, that's what he was saying. Alien 3, he's great. the Kevin Costner Robin Hood movie, be he was great in that.
00:35:58
Speaker
He's great in Count of Monte Cristo. This dude is a fucking beast. yeah and Every time he's a villain. yeah He's amazing in this movie too. um Tony Todd, he's in a lot of movies too. the Candy Man, right? Yeah, he's Candy Man. And so many other recognizable character actors. We're not going to get into their names, you're not going to know who they are, but you watch the movie and you know them.
00:36:22
Speaker
Um, there's that guy i've seen him and stuff. Yeah, those types This movie set in devil's night, which is the night before halloween in detroit. Of course if you're if you're fans of m&m D12 the group, you know devil's night was the name of their album Where it was the night where they set everything on fire the night before halloween and that's basically the backdrop of this whole movie it's a little embellished a little embellished in the movie, but that's obviously for effect yeah Yeah, they're actually doing the explosions rather than setting on fire. But um if you've seen 8 Mile, if you if you've listened to to the Devil's Night album, you kind of get the picture of what's going on there. yeah Soundtrack, mid-90s, all grunge.
00:37:04
Speaker
um The big song coming out of there was Stone Temple Pilots. I can't remember the name of the song, but it came out of the soundtrack. but pull out ryan vision Grunge, Metal, Emo, Nine Inch Nails. um Very, very cool. Very industrial. We'll get into some facts about the movie. um Based off the comic book, which we've talked about before, 1989, a series created by James O'Barr.
00:37:29
Speaker
um He wrote what would become the crow as a means to cope with this unexpected death of his fiancee who was killed and by a drunk driver and to give you a little backstory about James O'Barr is uh In this whole situation is he was a foster child kid It's like he was never like loved as a child and he met this girl and I believe they were still in high school and there were seniors in high school and he just fell head over heels for her and of course She dies in a car accident by a drunk driver or they assume it was a drunk driver. The guy was never caught. um And the whole thing was he went out and he was like, no, I got to ride home. And then he didn't. So she was going to pick him up when she got killed, which is why James O'Bara into a very dark place. He entered the military over the course of eight years. He was drawing these just to cope with everything. yeah And then, of course, eventually started writing a comic book out of it.
00:38:22
Speaker
when a new, a guy that owned a comic shop wanted to start his own comic label and found Obar's drawings and asked him to kind of flush everything out into a comic book. And that's how he sold it to this guy to get distributed. Interesting. Yeah, and then with his first meetings with ah with a major studio, um he quickly dismissed it. The studio's vision for the film the very first time was it going to be a musical starring Michael Jackson.
00:38:52
Speaker
He's like, nope, that's not my vision of this. No, thank you. And then the other one was someone wanted to be awesome or somebody I wanted to turn into a series of films that would be PG 13. And he decided to just not do that. I believe that was new line. They want to do that. He decided to just keep the rights for himself and sold them himself. So you keep everything.
00:39:10
Speaker
Um, original casting ideas, River Phoenix and Christian Slater to play Eric Dravin, um, did not happen. Of course. We know, we know who that was actually cast to. Johnny death allegedly turned it down also. Okay. I didn't, I didn't see that, but it would make total sense right after, uh, Edward Scissorhands. Um, Brandon Lee was cast.
00:39:34
Speaker
um Son of Bruce Lee Bruce Lee died very young. um We'll get into all the macabre of that in a minute But he dropped 20 plant 20 pounds to play this character Trained to like crazy work like worked closely with the crew to shape not only the movie but the choreographed the stunt work ye he did most of the stunts himself and yeah um He and the director um basically hold themselves up in a hotel room for about three weeks before they started shooting, watching all these classic light Hong Kong action flicks. And Lee also, the little known thing is, he was also signed up for three movies because he wanted to turn this into like the first comic book franchise outside of Batman. And so there was going to be multiple crow movies starring him in it.
00:40:20
Speaker
I'm glad that you mentioned that because we're talking 1994. There are no comic books. There's Batman and Superman. That's it. And this just took the world by storm. Swamp Thing, but those were like the movie horror movies. There was a TV show. Incredible Hulk was a TV show, of course. But this is the first time you actually saw something so dramatic.
00:40:45
Speaker
It wasn't so campy, but it's just it was it was fantastic. but um It was filmed in Willington, North Carolina, dead of winter. um Same facility where the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were filmed in 1990, 1989, a couple of years before. um and then i mean The most notable thing, the macabre part of this, was the tragedy that happened on set. March 31st, 1993. Michael Massey's character Funboy, who's seen in the movie,
00:41:14
Speaker
um And so being the apartment scene that they keep showing is flashbacks on the apartment apartment invasion where this gang comes in ends up killing Eric driven and his girlfriend um They have this supposed shootout in the bathroom in this scene um and a prop gun What was supposed to be a prop gun um was on set. um The fakes in the gun were not checked properly. Firearms specialist that was supposed to be on set left early that day, leaving a props assistant who was completely on unexperienced with everything um in charge. Kind of sounds familiar of the stuff that was happening with Alec Baldwin last year. hu The gun was not properly checked and loaded and Lee was mortally wounded in the abdomen right on set by this guy.
00:42:04
Speaker
um I didn't have a picture of the guy, but he's another character actor that we've seen in a bunch of movies before and since then. and He quit but acting for like a year after that happened, at least. Understandably. And yeah. um But at this point, the movie had almost all been completely filmed, except for three more days of filming left. They were all involved in the apartment scene where the invasion was happening. All that stuff was not filmed, except for the scene where the shootout was starting to happen.
00:42:32
Speaker
There was one scene where he was going to have somebody explain to him going into the third act, what was actually going on. Remember, he has that scene in the apartment with Albrecht. And he's like, I don't know what I am. I don't know if I'm a ghost. Eventually, there was going to be a scene filmed. They already cast a guy. He was flying into that weekend and to explain everything to the character of Eric before going into that last fight. So like it's kind of ambiguous. As a viewer, you don't know if he can die going into that last fight or not um because they never got to film that scene. And that's ah and that's a character I was reading in a little bit. that That was a character in the comic. That was a big part of the comic book too. yeah They wanted to bring into the story, but they never did. um Paramount Pictures financed the movie um for an initial $15 million. dollars
00:43:15
Speaker
But often out of the distribution after this tragedy happened, Brendan Lee, of course, passed away. um They took a break on set. Everything froze um until they found a new studio to do the film rights to release the film in theaters, which ended up being Miramax.
00:43:32
Speaker
um Came in gave them another eight million dollars to finish the movie did some reshoots rewrites ah Rewriting the flashback scene like like you mentioned in the beginning um and add new narration to the film Which wasn't a part of it as well, right? He's barely in the flashback scenes because they had to do it without him. It's mostly shell Yep. Lee's stunt double ended up finishing the scenes for him. He used digital face re replacement in the unfinished scenes featuring Lee as a likeness. um and It was all the apartment scenes. um Film was released on May 13, 1994, almost a year later. It ended up being Friday the 13th.
00:44:11
Speaker
um Total budget ended up being 23 million dollars made 94 million dollars. Not a huge I mean made about a quarter made three-quarters back of a quarter what they put into it um made 50 million dollars in the North North America region um but the home video and The merchandising and the cult following of this movie has made it so profitable. And of course the samples happened as well Obar After losing Lee, after the tragedy, and and everything that happened with his fiance and all that stuff, and like im having to relive that over and over again, he's regretted ever writing a comic book in the first place. I don't know if that's changed. and This isn't a Wikipedia article that I got this note. Yeah, yeah he I've seen that interview. um The interview, I believe, was in the early 2000s, but yeah, he did say that.
00:45:05
Speaker
Yep. Um, but they ended up making four more sequels because this is a cult following. Everybody loves this movie. Huge. We're going to talk about the nineties cultural impact of this movie in a minute, but four more sequels, including the new one that came out this year, retelling sequels, whatever a two, a two season TV series, which you said you've watched.
00:45:27
Speaker
No, I'd never saw it. I don't want to I've heard very bad things. Yeah, okay and multiple attempts of reboots, of course Rob zombies the crow 2037 DMX is the crow Lazarus, but I've heard about that which We'll get into that more when um I've got a whole set of notes I'm gonna do for before we watch when we review the remake that just came out but basically the idea that was two rappers that have beef, beef. And this was of course, because back then it was still kind of the biggie in Tupac thing. Early 2000s, the beef was going on. So it was going to be two rival rappers that one of them kills the other one. And the rumor at the time was Eminem was going to be it because he was just done filming 8 Mile. So it was going to be Eminem versus DMX. Eminem was going to be the bad guy.
00:46:17
Speaker
Wow, wow. And of course, we talked about it recently. This new movie that came out has been in developmental health for 15 years. Jason Momoa, Bradley Cooper, Channing Tatum, Luke Evans, all attached at some point to play Eric Driven in the reaper. Momoa was two weeks away from filming at one point. Very close, very close. We even had shots of him you can find in the internet, which we'll get for that episode of him in the core makeup.
00:46:43
Speaker
Um, but I mean, the big thing about the first pro movie is Brennan Lee's death. He was 28 years old when he died. Um, the legacy of the movie itself, it's almost like watching. It's like macabre. You're watching somebody die on screen.
00:46:58
Speaker
You're kind of seeing the last moments of his life. Um, you're also thinking, wow, this guy is so fucking good acting in this role. What could he have done? What else? Where would his career be now if he did not perish that day? Um, and of course the cult following of this, it's, it's just every email kid, every, everybody, everybody who loves movies, especially dark movies, love this movie. Um, everybody says some people say there could be a crow curse, um, because Brennan Lee died on set. Um,
00:47:27
Speaker
pro curse or of course the curse of bruce lee who died from yeah yeah taking fucking aspirin and a lot of people are speculating that like some sort of chinese mafia japanese mafia was on set and that's who put the bullet in the gun um they've gone to all sorts of lengths with the whole conspiracy theory um Comic to screen. I know you've read the comic. I haven't read it yet. um what What are your comparisons to what you've seen in the comic to what we saw in the screen? for what We'll talk about this movie first.
00:47:59
Speaker
Um, where do you get kind of get the, uh, the bridge between the two? What do you, what do you, what do you have the comparisons between the two in the comic? Um, he's a mechanic and they're just driving home after dinner and they get, and they get like a flat tire, believe. And then this gang pulls up and basically, uh, paralyzes Eric. Um, and then he has to watch his girlfriend get tortured and whatever else. Um, which is kind of in the sequel, which we're going to get to next week's city of angels. I believe the guy is a mechanic. It's been a few years since I've seen it. So, um,
00:48:29
Speaker
but um But they have a lot of the same characters are in it. Sarah, which we didn't talk about, Shelly's very good friend. um You don't really know their relationship is kind of like an older and younger sister type of relationship. She's in the book, I believe. Albright's in the book. Gideon's in the book. like Everyone's in the book. Some of the names of the bad guys have been turned i've been changed or repurposed. There's no Michael Windcock's character, I believe, is not in the book. I think Tintin is the leader of them.
00:48:56
Speaker
um So that whole like underground drug thing or whatever they're doing because the the guys obviously like selling coke and stuff like that. yeah I don't believe it's in the book. Obviously. um so i do forward to yeah I do look forward to rereading it soon. oh Yeah. Me too. I do want to get into it. Yeah. Yeah. um And actually doing like a deep dive then. Yeah. but Yeah. I mean, for the best part, it it did a lot of what the book did just differently from what I remember from the book.
00:49:25
Speaker
And we may depending on if I can find it again. This is a comic book completely sold out I want to get the hardcover version It was on Amazon completely sold out after the crow remake came out with them with Bill Skarsgard, but yeah What I know about this movie before I ever watched it just getting in just getting into WCW is of course W WCW sting The character in 1995, 1996, that was created mimicking the movie, mimicking Brendan Lee's emo turn. um And Steve Borden, who plays Sting, and before this he was like a surfer character. He had the the the colorful face makeup. um He came out with blonde hair. He dyed his hair black.
00:50:13
Speaker
Put on the white makeup like the crow um Came out with a trench coat like the crow and ended up being a character on WCW on television for another four or five years before WCW went under um as the crow character and different iterations of the crow character throughout the last 20 years since he's been on um since this happened in 1996 but the other thing of course we're going to talk about it right now this is one of my favorite images from the internet ever is the side by side comparison of what Heath Ledger did for his Joker in the Dark Knight some scenes from the crow as you can see were
00:50:49
Speaker
direct mimics of what Heath Ledger did in the Dark Knight first movie that came out in 2008, done by Christopher Nolan. Both performances, Heath Ledger died not too long after filming, um right but right during post-production, but both i don't I don't think Brendan Lee got any nominations or anything through the Oscars, but Heath Ledger, of course, won Best Actor. um But overall, like the side-by-side comparisons of the two of them that were kind of having these parallel moments in the movie had parallel moments in life, too, at the same time, where both of them perished different ways, of course. But just leaving a long lifelong legacy or a what legendary legendary legacy for both movies in the in just this footnote in history. but
00:51:44
Speaker
Um, but yeah, there's a great scene. there's also It's it's one of the scenes that I see in a lot of movies. I see the break, and there's an episode of Breaking Bad 2 where, um, Eric Dreven is in a windowsill, he's talking to somebody, and he slowly backs out of the corner.
00:52:01
Speaker
The Joker does that in The Dark Knight 2, where he backs out of the room, slowly holding some bombs, and he backs out, and the door closes in on him. Walter White happens in Breaking Bad 2. I don't see a lot of people talking about this. There's a scene in one of the Breaking Bad seasons where he's walking out of the room, and then the the door slowly closes behind him as he's backing out of it. That's one of my favorite favorite ways of seeing i've seeing a scene. I've seen it a few times in different movies and TV shows, too. I know it's mimicked. It has to be because of this, too. but Just the legacy of the crow alone and what it's done to cinema what it did to the emo lifestyle Music of course grunge was huge metal became huge around this time metal grunge But yeah overall a fantastic movie and like you mentioned City of Angels now is it and is it a sequel to this is it set in the same world protect yes um Okay, in the movie Sarah's in the movie
00:52:57
Speaker
Okay, okay. So, yeah, we'll get into that and I know that's not panned as well as the first one. um And I don't know if it's because Brennan Lee is not the crow this time. Who ended up playing the crow? Do you know?
00:53:10
Speaker
Uh, I can't remember his name. Um, yeah, it's pretty unknown. Um, that movie was, um, pretty much the direct result of studio interference the entire way through. Um, yeah, we'll talk about next week, but ensure it reminds me a lot of what happened with the suicide squad or the original suicide squad. right Um, but yeah, we'll talk about it next week. I'll, I'll do all the notes for that. Cause there's a lot of shit that went into making that movie, um, involving James O'Barr and everyone else. So.
00:53:38
Speaker
Oh wow. i didn' I didn't realize there was a lot of history to that movie, but yeah. Yeah. Um, yeah. Well, and by the time we get to Halloween, we'll talk about the new crow with, um, with, um, with a scratch guard. So, um, that being said, um, let's get into the news.
00:53:59
Speaker
And it's not a new segment without the trailer roundup. Got a couple of trailers we're going to talk about. First one is called. Woman of the Hour. This movie comes out on Netflix on October 18th directed by Anna Kendrick. um We talked about it a couple weeks ago about this guy who was on the dating game who ends up having a murderer's rampage while he's filming this. He's already killed a few people um and the person that Anna Kendrick who directed this movie is also playing the star of it. um The person that he ends up getting a date with, um the way the trailer's hinting to it is like he's stalking her.
00:54:35
Speaker
I don't think that really happened in real life. This is all done for dramatic effect for the movie, I know, but um the story itself is interesting. He ends up getting caught, I think, a year after the dating game and episode airs. And then they find out, oh yeah, shit, this guy was on TV. This guy was out and about. He was killing people. um Very interesting story. A movie comes out on October 18th. I wanted to bring that up. um Squid Game Season 2 trailer came out yesterday. um I still need to watch Season 1. Have you watched Season 1 yet? Oh yeah, twice. I need to watch that. um That comes out on on ah December 26th. Teaser trailer came out yesterday.
00:55:10
Speaker
um
00:55:12
Speaker
Brothers a movie. I did not know about till this week starring the dink Dinklage, Peter Dinklage, and Josh Brolin, Glenn Close, Marisa Tomei, Brendan Fraser. It's been a lot of shit nowadays. Why does Josh Brolin just look like an out-of-work, homeless version of John Cena in this photo? He does, you're right. This comes out on Amazon Prime in the middle of October, October 17th, new movie. Looks fantastic, looks really funny. Reminded me a lot of Coen Brothers, which for me isn't getting missed. I know a lot of people love Coen Brothers.
00:55:45
Speaker
um That big movie that they had, I wasn't a huge fan of. No Country for Old Men, I wasn't a huge fan of that. um True Grit, I loved. I believe they produced this movie, I believe. um But yeah, it looks funny. Reminded me a lot of of twins with Danny DeVito and and Arnold Schwarzenegger, but on a different level. But um yeah, comes out next month when we watch that.
00:56:12
Speaker
um no No trailers, but I wanted to bring up the posters for here. This comes out November 1st. This is, of course, Robert Zemeckis' new film. um All set in one room, the whole entire movie, and you see the world change around them. It's kind of like a history-changing event happening around this family.
00:56:29
Speaker
um And Nosferatu, this comes out on Christmas Day. um Robert Eggers, Nosferatu, of course, played by Bill Czar. He's also very hit or miss. um But this movie, I saw the preview before, by Bike Riders, and it looks good.
00:56:44
Speaker
yeah um Mr. Crockett, did you end up seeing this trailer? I think I sent it to you. It's a horror movie and the whole premise of it, I don't know what the date is, this comes out I think it's next month sometime. um But there's a video tape that this woman this roman rents or finds at a library or something.
00:57:05
Speaker
And it's a videotape of this children's show, kind of like Mr. Rogers, um something like that. And they put this videotape in the TV, and this character is called Mr. Crockett. And he ends up coming out of the TV and has murderous rampages and kills the family and everybody that's that's watching the videotape watching this show. It looks really cool. um Other than that, I don't know much more about it. It comes out on Hulu, I just don't know, and sometime next month. um Maybe we'll talk about it in a couple weeks. but um office reboot ah australian version coming out on prime next month on october 18th um first trailer for that released um a lot of people are are saying not my office um yeah i'm kind of there too um it definitely looks like they're trying to be the american office uh trying to be the michael scott trying to even be the ricky gervais office from the from uk but um

um no I don't know, I'll watch it. I love The Office, so I may watch that. I'm of course excited about the new one, too. We got a new trailer for Joker, which comes out in a couple weeks. Of course, I don't have that on here. ah The Joker fully ado. Yeah, it just it looks good, but the first Joker for me, the last 20 minutes was good. I just don't know if a whole movie, and by the way, the reviews were looking, and I don't know if a whole movie of the sequel of The Joker is going to be good. but We'll probably end up seeing it some at some point. um But a trailer that I was um excited for, a movie I heard about a while ago.
00:58:33
Speaker
called nikki seventeen did you end up watching that trailer yeah uh... what i'm going to sit on the sci-fi i did not i knew it was going to be sci-fi i did not know it was going to be like it almost looks like a dark comedy i did not know that was going to be the situation we're going into and robert pattinson's voice in this movie is american awesome yes awesome american voice um... i thought it looked great sci-fi he plays a verse seventeenth version of himself Where every time something goes wrong and they kill the original Mickey, or the the Mickey beforehand, it is cloned. So the one that they're talking about, Mickey 17, that's the 17th clone of Mickey. um It looks funny, and they and they find out that there's two of them together at one time. There's only supposed to be one version, ah not two clones together. I guess there's like two or three of them, the way the trailer's depicted. but
00:59:25
Speaker
Looks very funny, looks very good, Robert Pattinson looks fantastic in it, so something I'm looking forward to, and that comes out, I believe in January, January 31st or something yeah like that. but um Weekend box office, last weekend, Beetlejuice won the box office with 51 million. Speak no evil, 11.5 million, that's the one with James McAvoy.
00:59:48
Speaker
um Deadpool Wolverine number three with 5.2 million rumor that that comes out on digital in a week and a half um I think to actually maybe two weeks from today. We'll have to wait and see on that um Rest in peace to Tito Jackson the middle member the middle family member the founding member of the Jackson 5 brother of Michael, of course um died at 70 years old um rest in peace to him um and the Emmys happened last week yeah i'll Talk about all the winners and losers and and everything that had happened. um First of all, John Oliver got played off talking about his family's dead dog. um He's like, fuck you. There you go. He's he's talking to the Emmys. When people get played off the Emmys, it's funny as hell. Selena Gomez, ah so Steve Martin and Martin Short all came out. um And she made a joke because Donald Trump had said something about
01:00:45
Speaker
Childish, um I don't want anything to get into that, but they came out, told told jokes, and and were on the Emmy stage. i thought there I thought their repertoire together was really cool. um Of course, if you've seen the show, you know that too. um But the big winners. um Outstanding actor in a comedy series, Evan Moss-Bacherach for The Bear. um Outstanding lead actor in a comedy series, Jeremy Allen White for The Bear as well.
01:01:12
Speaker
And supporting actress for the bear, Lisa Collins Zayas. We've talked about her recently. She's the wife of Batista and Dexter. She won the ah best supporting actress. I believe she's one of the first Latin actresses to win that or maybe in a while, I don't remember. I saw something about that. but um And the big controversy of the bear being at the Emmys is that it's in the comedy category.
01:01:39
Speaker
Yeah. Is the show a comedy? Is the show a comedy? Not at all. There's a lot of laughing. There's a lot of laughable moments, especially around Eben Masbakarok's character of Richie. And even there's a lot of comedic... Is it even a dark comedy? There's parts of it that are comedic, but it's so fucking...
01:02:03
Speaker
butthole clenching the whole entire series. Like, and that's the whole thing that the whole, the whole controversy of the bear winning is, is it a comedy? Like, should this be in this category or should it be in the drama category? Um, and a lot of people were speaking out about it. Lorraine Newman from SNL had talked about it, um, says she could feel an ulcer developing over the bear being a comedy over dramatic shit. But, um, but speaking of comedies, the bear did not win outstanding comedy.
01:02:33
Speaker
A show called Hacks, which I've heard about, never saw. um Also lead actress Jean Smart, who plays that one for best actress for lead in a comedy as well. um I had no idea what the show was about, still don't know. I just know one comedy over the bear. um I don't know, have you heard anything? Have you watched anything about Hacks? I don't even know what song.
01:02:54
Speaker
Yeah, i HBO, I think. So it's an HBO show, or one of those. like I don't know. But yeah. um But the other big winner that night was Shogun, which I have not watched. I do want to see.
01:03:05
Speaker
won 18 Emmys, all-time record for a single season of a TV show, best drama, best directing, sound mixing, sound editing, picture editing, cinematography, period, costumes, main title. This is a this is a show that's not in English at all, right? There's maybe a few few scenes in English, mostly subtitles, right? It's mostly subtitles, yeah. Yeah. Of course, starring the guy who played um scocorpion and the new memorial combat um this is a hulo showll i have not seen it but i do want to see it so based off a book i think there was an actual wasn't there another series in the eighty s or something there was on this in the eighty s there' was another series based on the book I think it went a few seasons. I originally, this was supposed to only go one season because of how popular it was. They immediately greenlit a second one.
01:03:49
Speaker
Okay. um Which is interesting, but ah yeah, the first season is very good. I got about halfway through it, and then it works out to get busy, so I stopped. Okay. Because it takes a lot for me to watch something with subtitles, um because you really have to pay attention. um Yeah. and we're Speaking of which, when you watch Squid Game, watch it with subtitles, don't watch the dub version. Okay. ah Okay. why that's I've seen it twice, once in each way, and I think the dub version is fine for like the first time watching it, but like you just get a lot more nuance with the subtitle version.
01:04:19
Speaker
You're not the first person I've heard say that to me about other things too. What was the last thing? I can't remember what the last thing that came out with subtitles. Jodie Foster, one for lead actress in the limited anthology series for True Detective. I have never watched any of the True Detective shows.
01:04:37
Speaker
Oh, first season is so good. the only That's the only thing I know is everybody says at first the only thing i know is the first season was good. Other than that, I don't know. The big winner for supporting actor in an anthology series was Lamar Morris. So I fucking love it, New Girl. I mean, one for Fargo, which is another show I've never seen. um But Lamar Morris is funny in New Girl. If you've never seen New Girl, he's great in that. um Billy Crudup, we talked about him last week, um supporting actor in a drama series.
01:05:05
Speaker
ah For the morning show another show i never watch um Elizabeth de Becky from the crown sporting actress in the drama series and mr. And Richard Gad the writer star a creator of baby reindeer One for best limited series at the Emmys also one for his writing and starring in in ah and Baby Reindeer, which was a fantastic series on Netflix. Oh, you watched it? Oh, my God. Yeah, we talked about it a couple of months ago. um ah This was fantastic. and And Jessica Gunning, who played um the lead in this show, was outstanding. And she won Best Supporting Actress in the Limited Series, rightfully so. um That show, it's on Netflix. Watch it this weekend or when you get out of work. Make it one of your first things you watch, Kevin. You will love it.
01:05:55
Speaker
um lots of twists and turns. I think the episodes are pretty quick too, maybe half hour episodes. And it's a true story based on his life. True story. Based on something that actually happened to him, um this this woman ended up stalking him and went crazy, got crazy. um And the true life, whatever, what happened in real life too, the woman after the movie, after this TV series got popular,
01:06:20
Speaker
ended up suing netflix and suing him for yes okay now i remember now i remember talking about it yeah yeah um okay but total total emmy wins this week um fx with 36 of course they got the bear and they got show guns so that's right yeah um netflix uh 24 hbo max 14 which is kind of low for them um apple tv 10 we've talked about it before apple tv critically acclaimed, but there's no, all it is is their own original stuff, own IP, which is good for them, but they don't own anything. They don't have any anything on there. They do. Everything that they do is of high quality. They just don't have a lot on it. um But it's crazy how a few years ago even, the Emmys and the Oscars were always fighting back against giving anything to Netflix because they were quote unquote streaming. And now they've fucking cleaned up and and everything else like FX, all those shows.
01:07:11
Speaker
Basically go right to Hulu on who there's live streaming service. So it's pretty crazy. They want spot back against giving any of them awards Yeah, streaming streaming is the king of everything. Disney+, Hulu, ABC, NBC all had seven ye wins all tied along. CBS 5, Amazon 4, Peacock 3. I can't name a show on Peacock that would have Emmy nominations. I don't know what they won for. um Emmy viewership jumped 54%. I mean, 6.9 million viewers and doesn't seem like a lot. But in today's comparison to what we used to watch back in the day when everything was like 100 million viewers,
01:07:45
Speaker
um ah Yeah, I I thought I thought it was good for the clips I saw um I watched it you did you watch? Yeah, we did a yeah group watch um which is great If you go on discord somebody can just have the stream going so everyone can just watch it together um So that was a fun time like five or six of us just but shooting the shit about these shows and that's what put baby grandeur on my radar as they all said it was fantastic too, so I'm gonna start that tonight so They all started last night. I don't know. It was a good show. I got too much left. It's very... Baby are very quick watched, like I said, halfapp half-hour episodes. um Yeah, and i thought I thought it was really good. I think you'll like that. Excellent. um Cool. Last week I talked about Flappy Bird coming back in 2025 and how the creator, about a decade ago, took it off the apps and everything, didn't want anything to do with the popularity of it.
01:08:38
Speaker
slamming this whole news article that came out saying that he did not sell Slappy Bird to anyone. um He still owns it. He's going to distance himself from the project. um And he insisted he did not sell it at all. So I don't know what's going to happen with it. I remember how viral it was. I remember everybody loved it. And then it was just deleted from the app store. Nobody nobody could play it again. But um yeah, I did like it. I don't know if it'll come back or not. um It was announced this week that a remake of Lawrence of Arabia is coming out of series.
01:09:05
Speaker
I'm called Lawrence in Arabia. um Roland Emmerich, Anthony McCartan, I know who that is, are planning a three season series. um Don't know where it's going to air. A movie I've never seen. I've never seen Lawrence in Arabia. Can I that tell you something? What? When I was eight, I told my father I wanted to rent this movie. He's very shocked about this, right? You know why I wanted to rent it? Because I looked at the cover and I thought that was John Claude Van Dam.
01:09:32
Speaker
Okay. Oh, you're off. And I started and I went, what the shit? What, what, what? But A.L.B. thought this looked like John Claude Van Dam when I was trying to watch every movie he was in. All I know is when people talk about best movies, you've got The Godfather and you've got this and a few other ones up in the top of the list of yeah what people say are the best movies of all time.
01:09:55
Speaker
Lords of Arabia is right up there top five top ten of a lot of people's movie lists. I've never seen it um I'd like to watch it and see what it's all about. It's on my list of things to watch so maybe eventually but This comes out on October 20th and 23rd. I'm sure you saw this in the theater um Saw you see the original saw in the theater when it came out 20 no remember I was late to the saw party I believe okay, I didn't really go to the theaters a lot from like 2000 to 2010 probably unless it was like a Batman movie or something or like something a friend wanted to see or something. The first song I saw in theaters was supposed to be Saw 3. It was supposed to be Saw 3 but we went out dinner, went to the theaters and they were sold out opening night so I never even saw that in theaters. I think Saw 4 was the actual first one I saw in theaters. so
01:10:47
Speaker
Well, if you do want to see the unrated versions coming to theaters again on October 20th and 23rd, it could be regal, um probably fandom events. so um If you want do want to see it, it's going to be there. I know the first time I saw it was over at your house. Yes. I've only seen the first one. Because I was addicted to that movie. Yeah, you must just get obsessed with it.
01:11:09
Speaker
First three are really good as a trilogy and then it kind of goes off the rails into the second trilogy then there's the seventh which was in 3d which was actually pretty good and I enjoy them all because they're just enjoyable for me But the first three are actually like a legit decent trilogy that all connect to each other and then they just get fucking outlandish Yeah um Announced this week that John Cena is gonna be leading a live-action matchbox movie about the matchbox cars um Kind of going off the Barbie hype that happened last year Well Barbies was used for girls growing up matchbox is huge for the boys So let's get the biggest male star that we can think of and get John Cena to play that character where ten years ago would have been the rock now It's John Cena
01:11:50
Speaker
um Yeah, I don't know. Matchbox, everybody had them every every boy had at least one matchbox growing up. so um I was listening to the JR podcast this week. um He revealed that he has been recording new episodes of Dark Side of the Ring, which there hadn't been a new season announcement for Dark Side.
01:12:05
Speaker
um But he said he was this currently being filmed and he just recorded a episode about Mick Foley. um i think we talked about I think we just talked about Mick Foley um as a speculation of what the next season could be. and I think we're talking about Mick Foley would be a great topic on that show. It would be everything that happened with him. It would be like a two-part episode on that show. Just sucks that Terry Funk's gone so they can't interview him for it. Right. They had such a huge rivalry slash friendship.
01:12:32
Speaker
and so they'll probably have to use back stuff for him but uh yeah they've been a like awesome they've done a lot of interviews for the years they can probably take on people that have done interviews before in the past and they've talked and they've talked about some of this stuff before they talked about Hell in the Cell um a and a few other things but make Foley's career huge for us I mean me I was right when I was getting into wrestling was when he was in his prime when he won his title and everything so um yeah James Cameron's been deep in the Avatar movies for yeah over a decade, a decade and a half now. Not fuck longer than that, 20 years now. um And he's when he has time to take a break from the Avatar movies, he's right now currently getting ready to release the third one next year. He's set to direct the last train to Hiroshima, the true story of a man who survived not only the atomic bomb in Hiroshima,
01:13:22
Speaker
But he got on a train to Nagasaki and he survived another one in Nagasaki. He survived both atomic bombs blasts. Based off of two books, I believe, I don't i remember when they came out. ah True story. um Yeah, but this is a this is a project he wants to get done in between when he's doing the Avatar movies. He's gonna be... I assume he'll be between three and four because yeah three shot back to back with two. So I don't know if he took a break from four, maybe they're filming four now and he'll do this from there in post for that.
01:13:51
Speaker
How old is this guy? How old is this guy? 72. 72? I want to say. Because I think he was 70 when Avatar released. Which the funniest thing about Avatar, I mean when Avatar 2 released was the funniest thing about Avatar 2 releasing is that it took him like 15 years wherever to make Avatar 2 and he had COVID so he couldn't even show up for the premiere.
01:14:08
Speaker
right that's right remember That's fucking out of funny. me um night Not sure your thoughts on Jennifer Lopez. She's got a lot of weird fucking movies in her catalog. um But Brett Goldstein, who we love for Ted Lasso, they're going to end up doing a movie. Jennifer lope Lopez has a deal with Netflix. She's been doing wrong she's been doing movies on there. but She's going to be doing a rom-com.
01:14:32
Speaker
With Ted Lasso's Brent Goldstein, considering an office romance is what they're calling it, he's going to be co-writing it with Joe Kelly. I don't know who that is, but yeah, several great character actor roles are going to be in it as well. I love him. I don't really care less about Jennifer Lopez, by the way.
01:14:52
Speaker
I don't think I've ever seen a movie with her in it. The wedding planner, choosing anaconda. evan smith I did see anaconda back in the day. Oh, Jersey, Jersey, Jersey girl. Yeah, which she wasn't even in it much, right? Like she's like dies. Speaking. Speaking of Jennifer Lopez, I forgot to put this in the notes, but we got to talk about it. We got to talk about P Diddy. The thousand bottles of baby lotion that this FBI sees from his house.
01:15:22
Speaker
and the 115 dildos. I saw a tweet, I saw a t tweet that was like, anytime you hear dans a gangster rapper, just remember that guy probably got a dildo shoved up his ass by PD at one point in is before he became famous. He's also like the most dangerous person.

Speculation on Tupac's Murder

01:15:40
Speaker
So he made me dead by the time we talk next week.
01:15:43
Speaker
We'll see. Yeah. But oh, my God, that story is crazy. Everything is coming out about it. Did you see trafficking? I mean, clip they played there. This is like out of five or six years ago in the Breakfast Club. And they played a clip with Diddy in studio. And they're like, this is a clip from your party the night before. And it was like it was pretty out there. And and he was like, oh, I only remember that, blah, blah, blah. And it was like now that like you hear all these stories coming in, you're like, huh?
01:16:08
Speaker
and value did you see the video of him he's meeting justin bie this is right before i think this year he's meeting justin bieber behind the scene somewhere and he end up patting him down to make sure that justin bieber wasn't wired because he was so he was so We're worried that he was being followed by the FBI at the time whatever um that That video is funny too. But oh my god. Yeah, you're right. He is in a bad prison um and Also the big rumor and speculation we talked about on the podcast before is who killed the big-year Tupac We all think it's puffs. What's was it? Puffly do was he involved in some way of at least Tupac's murder? We don't know but
01:16:48
Speaker
I don't think we'll ever know. Maybe, I mean, we need to keep the D, whatever his name is, you know? I think he was also involved with Biggie's because wasn't he with Biggie and he refused to take the same car as him or something like that that night? Yeah, something like that, yeah. Something weird like that, yeah.
01:17:03
Speaker
uh... we'll talk about that maybe next week we'll hear more about it he was just arrested a couple days ago but

Upcoming Movies & Series Previews

01:17:09
Speaker
uh... we talked about nicholas cage coming out to play john madden and they finally showed the first picture of him in costume that's it for shot madden we talked about how the fuck is he gonna look at his john madden well that's what he looks like actually looks like john fucking madden uh... but yeah it funny that's funny fucking looking uh...
01:17:32
Speaker
They confirmed that Peaky Blinders is going to be set in World War II. If you've ever seen Peaky Blinders, kind of I think it starts at World War I. It slowly builds up through time, going up in the time. um I got to finish the last season of that. I think it's right after World War I, because I think it starts during prohibition. When he's coming back. Or maybe it's right before prohibition. OK, yeah, that's what it is.
01:17:52
Speaker
And when it comes back from the war, it's not I don't think they didn't have prohibition in Britain. I can't remember. There's something else going on there. Oh, OK. Yeah. um But yeah, the movie, I can't wait to see it. I got I got to finish the series. So if you have not watched Peaky Blinders, it's on Netflix. It is great. um It is really Murphy. Kelly Murphy is fantastic in it. um but Yeah.
01:18:12
Speaker
um Lin-Manuel Miranda released all the people that are going to be on his Warriors soundtrack slash retelling remake songs that he did for this album. um He watched the movie The Warriors, read the book The Warriors, and he made all of these songs and brought in prominent artists too to do the songs to. He brought in Cameron, Ghostface Killarizza, Nas. Nas actually I think helped him produce this Lin-Manuel.
01:18:40
Speaker
Busta Rhymes, a few other ones. Coleman Domingo's in it. Lauren Hill's in it. um Huge cast on ah not only hip-hop but Broadway music as well. but yeah i I like it Lin-Manuel. I've never seen The Warriors.
01:18:57
Speaker
Never read the book. I know it's something that I want to watch probably next month. I'm not sure how this is going to hit me because I'm not in the warrior i' i'm not into the Warriors. I'm not sure how it's going to hit me, but it's not going to be like a Broadway show. It's just releasing an album, a concept album. um Kind of a cool idea. He kind of did that with with ah with um with Hamilton too, but he actually did the play for it. This is just going to be the the album. but um 28 years later, completely filmed on an iPhone 15, not even the latest model. um Yeah, I have never seen any of these movies, the 28 movies, 28 days, 28 weeks, 28 years. 28 days later is one of the best zombie things you could watch. It's so good.
01:19:40
Speaker
Yeah, I gotta watch him. Of course Killian's in those two. I think he's in everything. Yeah, definitely. um Tom Holland and Austin Butler are going to be in a drug smuggling brothers movie called American Speed. Don't know anything about that. um Two of Hollywood's most wanted stars right now. so um EA confirms that Star Wars Jedi game the third one the final is gonna be the final chapter in this series I never I haven't even played the second one. I've only I've only beaten the first one. Yeah, once I get into it I will probably I got the second one For like 30 bucks at like Christmas, so I'm sure they'll be sales So you probably get cheap if it's not even like free PSF Kevin yeah It's even sadder than that. I believe I have the game and I've never even put it Okay, yeah the game has like ah what they call like when you'd select difficulties and leave this one called like story mode So you just fly through that I believe pretty quickly from why I've been told and you do all the action stuff is just super easy Super digestible because the first one was just a bitch at times and figuring out where to go and stuff So they kind of simplified that for us dumb dumbs in our 40s
01:20:47
Speaker
Yes, i I am waiting to struggle with video games like I did. Which is why I see all those so difficult for me to get into nowadays. I forgot to put this in the notes and on the on the YouTube, but... Skeleton Crew revealed the first look at Jaleel White's Space Pirate. um Of course, the Star Wars Skeleton Crew comes out in December. Jaleel White, if you don't know who that is, it's Steve Urkel from Family Matters. um He's come in to play this new character, Space Pirate, in Skeleton Crew. um From what I hear, this show is going to be good, but um we heard the same about the Acolyte too, so who knows? um Yeah, we'll see. It comes out in December.

Controversies in Entertainment

01:21:26
Speaker
MrBeast, YouTube sensation, being sued, with Amazon by contestants of Beast Game, the show he had on Amazon, um including allegations of sexual harassment. I don't know much about that. I just know that that Mr. Beast is a huge, huge online influencer, but yeah.
01:21:43
Speaker
yeah um
01:21:46
Speaker
Valkyrie actress, Valkyrie, I don't know who this is, accuses Jason Momoa of mistreating Minecraft movie crew. um She's saying she was pretty disappointed. um Her direct quote, I just saw him mistreat some of the crew, said the streamer. um it was a pretty just it was the It was pretty disappointing. It was after a very intense scene, a very emotional scene, so maybe it was in character, I don't know. But I was just surprised by how he treated some of the crew. um I've actually, I've definitely heard this before about Jason Memorial and it's supposed to be a dick.
01:22:19
Speaker
Yeah, but wasn't that um from what's her name on during Aquaman 2? Wasn't it Amber Heard? Amber Heard, yeah. That's what it was. It's Amber Heard who poops the bed. Amber Turd. That's right. That's what it was.

Batman Franchise Developments

01:22:32
Speaker
um Batman next week on on ah September 26 is going to be receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. um I believe isn't it Jim Lee is going to be taking gonna be a doing the honor for that, taking the honor for Batman. I believe that may be Adam West's birthday. I i can't remember. this has a big There's a big deal about that that date. but
01:22:55
Speaker
Yeah, that's cool. We didn't talk about this last week, but I saw it right after we came off the podcast. I wanted to bring it up this week. Patrick Schwarzenegger, son of Arnold Schwarzenegger. We talked about the Batman and all the, if the aesthetics gonna be blue. It's gonna be set in wintertime. Mr. Freeze play a big part of that.
01:23:14
Speaker
well patrickwarersennegger went on twitter and posted winter has come at last the iceman cometh of course a line from his father and batman and robin however patrick soennegger was great in gennvi this spin-off of the boys. I think he would be fantastic in the Batman. Whether he plays Mr. Freeze or not, I would love to see him in something. I think he would be a great Victor Freeze, to be honest with you. Yeah, um yeah I think that would be cool. I don't know i don't know i don't know what i don't know what else he's actually actually done besides Genevieve, but I thought he was great in that. He was only in it for briefly for the first episode and a couple flashbacks.
01:23:53
Speaker
um Yeah, I want to bring that up. um No cool creator Danny Kate says he has been talking with Sony and got to read the script for Venom the Last Dance, his direct quote. I'll say this, it's so much bigger and so much more ambitious than you can imagine. And um no, holy shit, that's how you treat a king.
01:24:15
Speaker
um The hype for this is huge, especially since that last trailer came out. I cannot wait for it. Even though I know Sony's move, I cannot wait to see it because I love, I love Noah. I love the symbiote. Venom is my favorite character. It really is. like I like these movies, even though I know they're not that true to the original because they obviously can't have Peter Parker in them. But they're just three. They're just popcorn fun.
01:24:37
Speaker
um They haven't really treated the character the way you wanted them to treat it, but to me, they're kind of, ah it's fine for me. I like them. I love her yeah relationship the They're great when they're together. So yeah.

Theme Park Changes & Box Office Updates

01:24:52
Speaker
speaking Speaking of Spider-Man, Universal hollywood ah Islands of Adventure and hollywood islands of adventure and in in Florida, the best ride that they have there, I'm not in into roller coasters, everybody says it could be the whole coaster, I don't know, but the best sit-down ride that they have at you at the at the Islands of Adventure down there is the Spider-Man ride.
01:25:16
Speaker
The reason why Disney can't have any anything east of the Mississippi that has anything to do with Avengers is because of the deal they have with Universal. Well, the rumor came out this week is that, and because if they have all these they they have a whole superhero park at Universal Islands of Adventure, um the rumors came out this week that they may be developing a replacement for the Marvel superhero land in Islands of Adventures and getting rid of all of those rides. um The rumor being, instead of having all of this stuff, it would be Pokemon, which is huge internationally.

That was a huge an awesome ride Spider-man ride was great, too um You're actually going through the city of New York with spider-man You end up walking into the Daily Bugle when you're first when you first get on the ride very cool very interactive Yeah, it just sucks if that does if that does go away the whole world. whole The whole coaster is the big landmark of that park, um but Pokemon internationally well known. um And this also could open up the fact that Marvel could open up Avengers into Disney World, which they haven't been able to do because they couldn't touch the property because Universal had the rights east of the Mississippi.
