Superman and Daredevil Discussion

00:01:16
Speaker
Hey, what's going on?
00:01:25
Speaker
Hey, what's going on, Not much, not going jump right into the show. We're going to jump right into the show. We're going jam-packed episode with some Superman of the Year news, Superman Year, whatever we call it.
00:01:37
Speaker
um But first off, let's talk about, and did you end up watching this week's Daredevil? I know you're traveling. Yes. Oh, yeah. I make sure to watch that and Reacher every week. Yes, awesome, because those are ah big conversation points today. First one is Daredevil, Born Again.
00:01:54
Speaker
Great episode. We see the return of Frank Castle Punisher um coming out of the shadows literally and confronting Matt Murdock at the end of this episode.

Frank Castle's Return and Villain Introduction

00:02:05
Speaker
um Very, very good. um Jon Bernthal has been talking a lot about this episode and how it took him a while to actually sign up to be part of the show. because originally they didn't have a good idea for him to come back and this was a great set of dialogue.
00:02:20
Speaker
Yeah, they were new room, but this was a great set of dialogue for him. Worked great. um Michael Gandolfini, I think, ah is great. I mean, obviously, pedigree. looks so much like his father.
00:02:31
Speaker
ah The pedigree is amazing. um And Muse. At the very end of this episode, we get a quick glimpse of the of the villain of this season, Muse. um Very sadistic.
00:02:42
Speaker
um I'm liking that. um I can't wait to see more of this character. i don't know much about him and from the comic books or anything. but He's dope. Currently filming this next season coming out next year of of Born Again.
00:02:55
Speaker
um and Matt Murdock and count Karen Page somewhere out in New York City with the worst red wig I have ever seen. It's so bad. She looks like a bad marriage. So bad.
00:03:09
Speaker
so But yeah, this is a great

Celtic City and Celtics Legacy

00:03:12
Speaker
show. It's on Disney Plus on Tuesday nights at 9 if you want to watch it live and follow along with us throughout the season. Next week is two episodes, so we'll talk about that next week.
00:03:22
Speaker
ah Were you able to watch Celtic City, the third episode? Of course I did. This show is fucking it's just fucking incredible. So good. the the thing about this The thing that this show's doing is making me want to watch Winning Time because it's right and going into that now. Dude!
00:03:39
Speaker
I told you about that show for three years. I know. We're getting that stuff all next week. um yeah To me, what this episode represented is how much Jason and Jalen understand the assignment of what it's like to be members of the Celtics.
00:03:53
Speaker
Yes. And the history and everything else that came with it. um The racial history. next week i'm good Especially Bill Russell. ah Yes. Next week I'm going to do a ah ah Steam review once I actually like Yeah, yeah. I full week to play with it oh because I got 2K. And in that you can take over the 1983 Celtics, which is what we're going to get into next week but with all the real players and all the teams and rosters and stuff that were in the NBA at that time.
00:04:19
Speaker
um But, yeah, I am loving this show. Jason and Jalen. I still don't know why people hate Jason Tatum so much. I guess part of it is because he's a Celtic. But, like, literally all that guy does is hang out with this kid and play basketball.
00:04:33
Speaker
Like, there's no controversy. It's weird. But everyone hates him so much. I mean, I guess it's because he always said he wanted to be Kobe. And people are like, bro, you're not Kobe. It's like, yeah, well, LeBron's not Michael Jordan, and he's always going to be Michael Jordan. So don't know.
00:04:49
Speaker
But yeah, this episode was excellent. Yeah, very, very good.

Celtics Era Post-Bill Russell

00:04:52
Speaker
um The episode dealt with the fallout after Bill Russell leaves, not only being a player but a coach. um The tech tension of the 1970s Boston era, the race riots going on through this the school school system. They show a lot of that. um The 1976 championship versus the Sun in triple overtime. That was amazing, yeah amazing story.
00:05:12
Speaker
Didn't know about it. And, of course, it leaves... As a Celtics fan, I don't know a lot about the 70s Celtics because to me it was like Bill Russell skipped 12 years, Larry Bird. To me, that's always how it's been. I know nothing about the 70s Celtics, so this episode was fantastic for me. And the end the episode dealt with the dawning and hiring of Larry Bird, and that's what we're going to be getting into the next few episodes. Wait till you see what Red pulled to get Larry Bird.
00:05:38
Speaker
Yeah, Red was a fucking genius.

Winning Time and Reacher's Cliffhanger

00:05:41
Speaker
Okay, cool. Yeah, I do like him. I like Auerbach. He's good. I like the name i I heard the name before getting into this. Actually, i watched the first five minutes of that show. I'll tell you why in a minute i'll tell you why in a minute why I didn't finish the episode, but um I did not know it started off with my Magic Johnson. I should have figured it would it would start with Magic Johnson and the AIDS diagnosis. because That was just just such a big story.
00:06:07
Speaker
Early Reacher. um richard Episode 7, the penultimate episode. What a fucking... It ended at the worst possible. like You need like three more minutes of that episode to see what's going to happen. like yeah It ends at the worst time.
00:06:23
Speaker
Yeah, of course he hooks up with the woman. He knew that was going to happen. yeah The agent who has the thickest Boston accent I've ever heard in my life. i don't know she actually know if she's putting that on.
00:06:34
Speaker
don't know she's putting that on, if she's from this area or what. but Great episode. And it made me want to watch the two movies that... I don't even know how, I don't even know the difference of how this happened. Have you watched both? Have you watched this? Have you watched these

Jack Reacher Movies Comparison

00:06:50
Speaker
movies? at least the first one, think.
00:06:52
Speaker
I have not. refuse to watch it because I knew what Jack Reacher was even though I hadn't read the books. And I knew Jack Reacher was not Tom Cruise. Bad idea to watch it after the show. I could see watching it before before the show, I could see this being Tom Cruise trying to make something that's not Mission Impossible. That's what it felt like, not Mission Impossible. yeah possible um And it's just knowing what we get on Amazon Prime and trying to see Tom Cruise being Jack Reacher...
00:07:18
Speaker
Did not work. um Movies were horrible. um The second one was pretty bad, too, and just the story-wise. um First one it was least tolerable, and you got a little bit of the glimpse of what Jack Reacher was. He's a drifter and all that, but the second one was not that good.
00:07:34
Speaker
um yeah Watch the first one if you haven't seen him, but i think watch the series. tom perz just like I think Tom Cruise just liked the books, and that's why he yeah he's the only reason why those movies got made, um yeah if I remember correctly, because he was a fan.
00:07:49
Speaker
But yeah, John Cruz is not reacher. Who's the guy that he that directs all of like the his Mission Impossible? The last few... one ah mcmer ah Uh, McLaurin?
00:08:00
Speaker
Yeah, something like that, yeah. He's the one that did the first Jack Reacher. Okay. I remember his name, but yeah, that makes perfect sense because it feels like, the first one feels like a Mission Impossible movie. It feels like a ripoff a mission of Mission Impossible. It looked like, that's why I didn't want to see it, plus I knew that Tom Cruise shouldn't be Jack Reacher. No, it's, no, definitely not.
00:08:19
Speaker
Alan Rickman would destroy him in a fight. Um...

Severance Review and Themes

00:08:23
Speaker
So the reason why i didn't watch winning time is because I binged the first season of severance in the last two days. I've been warning you that I was going to watch it. Have you watched any of this show yet?
00:08:33
Speaker
First episode or anything? I might take it on. I'm going to get Apple TV again sometime soon. I'll probably take on. Well, it is amazing. It's i know very, very, very good. i Um, do you hurt do you know, the basis wasn't great till the end.
00:08:49
Speaker
Yeah, it's great at the end. You know the basic story of what what the story is about, the whole the whole meaning of severance? I'm not going to tell you anything about it then. um Going kind of blind like I did.
00:09:00
Speaker
um Adam Scott's amazing in this, and he plays a duality role in this. It's incredible. um and That's all I'm going to say. ah Watch it. It's on Applete. The second season just ended last night.
00:09:13
Speaker
And I kept hearing things about it on social all week, so I decided to watch it Wednesday, and I pin binged it all Wednesday and yesterday. I finished it last late last night, so it's very, very good. I'm probably going to finish season two this weekend.
00:09:26
Speaker
ah That's how good it is. um And it reminds me a lot of what people may have thought of Lost when they were watching it initially. Is there an actual ending planned for this? There's a lot of mysteries to it. That's all I'm to say.
00:09:37
Speaker
Watch it, and we'll talk about it when you... I'd say with the way things are now, yes. You have to go into a show with knowing where you're going to end. yeah So I hope they did that with the show. cause I hope so too. Yeah, I hope so too because there's there's ah there's a lot of mysteries to it. so um Another week we're going to talk about Superman 1978.
00:09:57
Speaker
um Classic, classic Superman. This is where everything kind of changed from the campiness of the old days of black and white, the one with George Reeves. We talked about that last week. um This is Christopher Reeves being hired on to play the Man of Steel with a All-star cast to begin with.
00:10:15
Speaker
um We'll get into that. but um This is where it all began.

1978 Superman Film Analysis

00:10:21
Speaker
It started taking comic book genre as a serious form of mythos, serious form of literature, serious form of media.
00:10:29
Speaker
um and it just They took a lot of they they take a lot of steps to make this a great movie to the marketing, to everything. To the soundtrack done by John Williams. This is right after Jaws. a couple of years after Jaws. So he's right in the infancy of of doing movies and film.
00:10:44
Speaker
um And it became, his soundtrack became not only a lot of people's favorite soundtrack of his, but it became the heartbeat and emotion of the film. um the epic opening credits scene of this movie, where a lot of things have been ripped off from this, and you could also say this is kind of a ripoff of what Star Wars did the year before, where you've got to crawl, you've got space, you've got stuff crawling through space, the titles, the actors' names and everything.
00:11:12
Speaker
um Very, very exciting. the The movie opens with a so of a kid reading actually comic number one, and it kind of zooms out into space, and it's very, very cool ah visual.
00:11:23
Speaker
um written by Mario Puzo, who we watched ah we watched the movie on Paramount about the making of The Godfather. um He wrote The Godfather, the book, in the movie.
00:11:35
Speaker
And Richard Donner was brought in to direct. Richard Donner at that time, I don't think i don't know what he had directed. I think The Exorcist, maybe? Didn't he direct the first Exorcist or an Omen? Maybe it was The Omen I'm thinking of.
00:11:47
Speaker
I think it was The Omen. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That was what it was. um Brought him in. Of course, he's he's got a pedigree after after this. It's incredible. um But he brought him in, directed the movie, did a fantastic job. Brought him in to film the second one, too. We'll get into that in a minute.
00:12:03
Speaker
um Starring an up-and-comer right out of Broadway, right out of plays, Christopher Reeves. Didn't have any real acting experience um like in movies before this.
00:12:15
Speaker
um Margot Kidder. We just saw her in a horror movie this Christmas. That's the first time and that's the earliest I've seen her. yeah um Jackie Cooper, who played Perry White. um Gene Hackman. We've been talking a lot about him lately, but he's my favorite. Lex Luthor did amazing in this.
00:12:31
Speaker
um Ned Beatty plays his henchman, Otis. Marlon Brando, coming right out of The Godfather a few years in Apocalypse Now, playing Jor-El. Phoning it in as Darrell. We'll get into that in a minute. um you'll The whole tagline of this movie is, you'll believe a man can fly.
00:12:49
Speaker
And a lot of people think it's one of the best taglines in a poster and in in production, in movies it's ever that's ever been. Because you did believe by the end of this movie that a man could fly. They did a great job of the special effects in this.
00:13:02
Speaker
For the

Superman's Production Insights

00:13:03
Speaker
time. Considering the time. ye for the time um We're talking about some favorite notable scenes. First off, at the beginning of the movie, we see General Zod and two of his henchmen being reprimanded by the citizens of Krypton, led by Jor-El, and being sent to the Phantom Zone, which is a little looks like a little crystal mirror, and they're put into there, and it's just sent into space right before Krypton explodes.
00:13:27
Speaker
um Great scene. Of course, we see Terrence Stamp later on In the second movie, he's the main villain, but we'll get into that in a couple weeks, and probably a few weeks. um And then we see Krypton.
00:13:40
Speaker
We see Jor-El, we see his wife, Lara, and we see baby Kal-El, Superman, and the planet around them is being destroyed, and he has a ship, and he puts him in there. You know the story. Everybody knows the story.
00:13:53
Speaker
And as the planet's exploding, he gets sent off to two the Earth, and Martha and Jonathan can't find him... Martha, Martha, Martha.
00:14:04
Speaker
It's always Martha, Martha, Martha. um I still can't get over that. ah okay Paw Kent's death scene in Smallville. um Of course, tearjerker, if if you have any emotion whatsoever.
00:14:20
Speaker
um of course Of course, this is also notable for having a baby penis, if you've ever ever seen the movie. um Yeah, and then of course, Paw Kent dies right after this scene here. um One of my favorite scenes from this movie is the helicopter scene when when he reveals himself to the world. He comes out of the shadows.
00:14:37
Speaker
um He comes to save Lois Lane because the helicopter is falling off the roof and she's falling off the roof. One thing i never mentioned when I was talking about Superman and Lois there's a newspaper clipping in the corner of a scene that has this exact image on it from this That's very cool. In the last season of Superman and Lois, yeah.
00:14:56
Speaker
Very cool. And just the way he picks up the air, he picks up the helicopter and is holding Lois in the other hand looks awesome. um Another one of my favorite scenes from this is also when Superman meets Lois on the balcony and ah he's looking through her dress and he can't see through lead. And then she moves as he sees what he sees, what color panties she's wearing.
00:15:13
Speaker
And then they fly through the city of Metropolis. Like there, i mean, an iconic scene of them flying. There's a pop figure of it and everything. um And of course, here's a behind-the-scenes picture of that.
00:15:25
Speaker
um Clark confronting Lex Luthor in the first time you see Kryptonite in the movie. um He finds out that the the planet that Krypton exploded sent off meteors or meteorites to Earth and those landed on Earth and became um dangerous to Superman. Of course, the mythos of Superman, you know that.
00:15:45
Speaker
um And Luther sends a nuclear warhead to take over the world. um basically to take over California and Otis, his henchman wants to make Otisville, of course.
00:15:58
Speaker
um So we got Superman in California saving the world. And then Lois Lane dies in a, in a, in a landslide and as an earthquakes going through somewhere in this, in, in wherever they are in California.
00:16:12
Speaker
And he goes around the earth to time travel, which is a comic book trope. It did happen. Um, not too often. It did happen, i think, in a couple comics before this, but he did time travel this way, going backwards and sending the Earth in a tailspin.
00:16:25
Speaker
Um, and... Hold on. got a lot of pictures here. Um... And the very last scene of this movie is Superman kind of giving a wink to the audience as he's flying by Earth and space as as he say after he saved the world, put Lex Luthor in jail, and he's kind of looking at the, without waving, he's kind of looking at the audience like, yeah, that's right, I'm fucking Superman.
00:16:48
Speaker
Awesome ending. um Christopher Reeves does an incredible job of the duality of between him Clark Kent, and Superman. It's just two it's two different acting. The reason why it's great that they got somebody on that was number one, Juilliard trained, but also trained in Broadway, trained in working a play. I mean, he knew how to he knew how to do roles like this.
00:17:14
Speaker
um For the time, it was great casting. We'll talk about the casting in a minute, but they had a lot of choices. A lot of people turned it down, too, because they knew he would be typecast into a role like this.
00:17:26
Speaker
Bringing in Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, great idea. um I just watched French Connection. was a couple years after that, but um that his he had a lot of great comedic timing, especially working off of Ned Beatty as Otis.
00:17:42
Speaker
um And he had also another henchwoman named Miss Tassmacher who's created for this. Both Otis and her were created for this movie by Richard Donner and Mario Puzo. um And, of course, they've become... i know Miss Tassmacher's become part of the comic books, a part of the new mar ah Superman movie.
00:17:59
Speaker
And I believe she's been in a few shows as well. um I don't think Otis is part of the new movie, the James Gunn movie, but... No, he is. There's notice character. yeah I couldn't remember. yeah um um The credits also had that special effects that that kind of special effects font style, which everybody knows the font style from this movie.
00:18:21
Speaker
um go so Go through some Facts pretty quick. I'm going try to go through quick. um For the casting, they wanted an A-list in the beginning, an A-list actor for Superman. um DC approved of the following list in the original original idea of this movie um for the producers early on.
00:18:36
Speaker
Muhammad Ali, Al Pacino, James Caan, Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood, and Dustin Hoffman, who inevitably was offered the role of Lex Luthor, but turned it down later on when they finally went into the casting process.
00:18:49
Speaker
um Official A-list offers did go out to Robert Redford, Burt Reynolds, Sylvester Stallone, Paul Newman. i always heard and always heard about Bruce bruce Jenner testing.
00:19:02
Speaker
ah yeah Neil Diamond and Arnold Schwarzenegger lobbied. I heard about that for years. um James Caan was offered. James Brolin, ah Christopher Walken, Nick Nolte, Jon Voight.
00:19:14
Speaker
Warren Beatty, Chris Kristoff, and all the big names at the time were offered the roles, inevitably turned them down. um And they decided to go with an unknown in who they hired, Christopher Reeves. He only earned $250,000 for both Superman I and II compared to his co-stars who made multi-millions because, let's face it, Gene Hackman was a star.
00:19:36
Speaker
um And yeah, ah Francis Ford Coppola... Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were all in negotiations at one point to direct. um steele steel Steven Spielberg turned down because of Close Encounters being in production, and Lucas turned down because he was busy with Star Wars. He wanted to finish his story.
00:19:54
Speaker
um brandon Brando signed on for Jor-El with a salary of $3.7 million, dollars plus of the box office gross totals.
00:20:05
Speaker
he ended up making nineteen million dollars for the movie for pretty much phoning it in the whole time. um He edited his contract ah to complete all his scenes in 12 days.
00:20:16
Speaker
He had to use cue cards because he refused to memorize his dialogues. um And the end he had them all around the set, so he'd be turning around, there'd be a dialogue on this side on this side. And a lot of people who who filmed this movie, I think Gene Hackman may have been one of them.
00:20:32
Speaker
I don't know, somebody worked along with him, said he was difficult to work with during this film. It may have been Richard Donner. I can't remember who it was, talked about it, but. um Gene Hackman was hired for $2 million, dollars so you can kind of see the discrepancy between Christopher Reeves, the star of the movie, and the two supporting supporting stars of the film.
00:20:48
Speaker
um Pre-production started in Rome, Italy. however However, after spending $2 million dollars on what producers called flying tests, they had to move the entire production to the UK because Marlon Brando had a warren elf for his arrest for a decent exposure in Italy while he was filming The Last Tango in Paris.
00:21:05
Speaker
Um... They hired Richard Donner to take over the directing duties. He also trimmed down the script. Mario Puzo had a 550-page script, which is huge, brought it down to 110. Christopher Reeves was only 24 when filming.
00:21:18
Speaker
He was portraying a 30-year-old character. um Location filming took place in New York City. Arms going off. Take your meds, bro. albert No, was actually to record, I think. We were recording earlier. um Alberta, Canada took the place of Smallville.
00:21:36
Speaker
um Jeff East played teenage Clark Kent, but the decision was made to impose for Christopher Reeves to redub his voice. um lex luther's uh constantly changing his hair pieces throughout the film which the first time i noticed it watching it this time that he had like four different hair pieces until the very end when it's revealed that he's bald um which is of course everybody knows that um cameos we talked about this a little bit last week that no noel neal was in the train car with the young lois lane well also her father on that train car was kirk allen i did not know that
00:22:08
Speaker
still doing the research I have a picture here of Kirk Allen, of course, the first serial Superman. um John Rassenberger, who was in Cheers, he's done all the Disney voiceover, ah Toy Story, and stuff like that. He was a Navy Air Missile Controller.
00:22:22
Speaker
and And the Colonel, the Major from um I Dream of Jeannie, Major Nelson, was a Major in this, Larry Hagman. was majoring this as well, talking about how he wanted to see the boobs of Miss Tess Mucker.
00:22:35
Speaker
um Christopher Reeves was trained by David Prowse. We learned that in the Christopher Reeves documentary earlier this year. um david Of course, David Prowse is Darth Vader. He did the the suit of Darth Vader in the movies. um The helicopter sheen scene was sort shot at night during an NYC blackout.
00:22:51
Speaker
um The movie's original ending had Superman saving California, restructuring the San Andreas Fault, and then following ah the second missile into space, which would end up cracking the Phantom Zone, releasing the three villains.
00:23:04
Speaker
2017, this movie was added to the National Registry of the Library of Congress. um Richard Donner filmed what was going to be a sequel sim simultaneously. We're going get into all of that in a couple weeks, but um the filming lasts 19 months.
00:23:20
Speaker
Because they were filming both together, um they ended up filming 75% of the second film. um But towards the end, there were they were bleeding money. The producers were borrowing money from Warner Brothers to finish the story.
00:23:34
Speaker
And they just decided to scrap whatever they had for season 2 and just focus on finishing part 1.
00:23:41
Speaker
um to get it out for what was supposed to be ah the summer of, supposed to be coming out summer of 1978. Eventually it came out six months later in December.
00:23:52
Speaker
um Budget was $55 million, dollars most expensive film made at that point. um They spent about $7 million on marketing. um Like I mentioned, was supposed to come out on the 40th anniversary of Action Comics No. 1 in June, but it got delayed until December.
00:24:10
Speaker
It did gangbusters. $300 million dollars in the world, $134 million in North America. america Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joel Schuster had previewed the movie and saw it.
00:24:22
Speaker
That's them on the back lot watching the movie. um thanked Donner and gave them a positive pal of reaction to the movie. Schuster was delighted to see Superman on the screen. He got chills. Chris Reeves just got it the right touch of humor. He was really Superman.
00:24:37
Speaker
And Siegel beamed on exactly what I imagined. So they just saw their creation come to life and were very emotional over it. Very cool story. um The legacy of this movie, um with the help of Christopher Reeves, of course, doing an amazing job as Superman, ah brought this out-of-world charm.
00:24:55
Speaker
ah We believe the man could fly. That's the legacy of this movie. um Also, America finally believed that comic books could could be more than campy, childlike appeal, and could be a viable piece of expressionism and homegrown American mythos and literature.

Our own modern-day mythology, which you always put mythology right up there with Superman, because this myth mythical mythological stories begin with a story like this. so um Great movie. Great legacy to the to comic book movies in general and the character and everything.

Superman 2 Introduction

00:25:26
Speaker
And we'll talk all about next time, Superman 2. Um, lots to talk about. We're going to, we're probably going wait a couple of weeks because we got to, I got to watch part one and two and do a comparison.
00:25:37
Speaker
Um, cause I had not. And and like I mentioned, 75% of the movie was filmed. Um, I will give you a little preview. Um, Richard Donner did not finish his own movie. He brought in other directors and other people to finish it. And he was kind of pissed about it.
00:25:50
Speaker
Um, it was not his, not what he was familiar. And that also happened with Superman one when it went into live television airing as well. Um, Richard Donner was taken out of... They kind of butchered it when it went on TV for syndication.
00:26:04
Speaker
And Richard Donner was pissed about it because they butchered the story to make it fit into a two-hour time for for television, for airing. But, um yeah, great movie. if If you haven't seen it, you number one, you're under a rock. Number two, you should. It's just a classic, classic Superman story.
00:26:20
Speaker
um With that being said, let's jump into...

New Movie Trailers and Box Office

00:26:26
Speaker
the news. Shit. Shit.
00:26:34
Speaker
And it's not a new set of the trailer around it.
00:26:38
Speaker
Got a new trailer for a romantic movie, not a comedy, called The Materialists. ah This is starring um Pedro Pascal, Dakota Johnson, um Chris Evans, of course, Captain America.
00:26:54
Speaker
It looks okay. I have no idea what the fuck this is about. It's an A24 movie. ah It's a romance movie type, ah love triangle type of movie. Dakota Johnson's a horrible actress. I don't know how this is going to be probably horrible. but She's working with two greats, so I don't know.
00:27:11
Speaker
um It's got a new trailer for Happy Gilmore 2. Looked great. um Not much to say about that. Cannot wait for the movie. Got a new trailer for Ballerina. Another another great movie. Keanu coming back to play ah John Wick.
00:27:25
Speaker
ah This is, of course, a spin-off of that. So excited for that.
00:27:29
Speaker
Got a trailer for Toxic Avenger. Did you see this trailer? Looks awesome. Can't wait. Define awesome. It looks campy. I mean, I guess that's what they're looking for. 80s camp. Yeah, I know.
00:27:42
Speaker
I know. It looks weird. This looks incredible. But when you see like when you see Peter Dinklage walk in with a toxic mop with toxic waste on it, and slits people's throats in the middle of a restaurant.
00:27:56
Speaker
It's very jarring. Let's just say that. um Weekend box office last week. Novocaine won low weekend for a box office, especially for a debut movie. $8 million.
00:28:08
Speaker
Mickey 17, $7.5 million in Black Bag, which I don't know what that is. $7.5 million. Is that horror movie? I think it is. I don't know. It's getting good reviews. Mickey 17 is coming out on digital next week, next Tuesday. um Kind of figured it would be coming up fairly early because it's not doing what they expected.
00:28:27
Speaker
considering it's probably going to about a $100 million dollar loss for Warner Brothers. um Speaking of Warner Brothers, big news this week. After the Wiley Coeady went out and Warner Brothers and pitched the lot last week,
00:28:40
Speaker
They are going to be releasing the Coyote vs. Acme movie. They're trying to shop it around to a group called Ketchup Entertainment. They just did a Looney Tunes movie. They just released it. It kind of had the same thing. It was kind of shelved.
00:28:56
Speaker
They just released it. Doing great. People are loving it. So they asked Warner Brothers, hey, can we buy this? but what's What's the number that we need to to get this tax incentive? Number one, to pay that off, plus to give you a little bit of profit.
00:29:07
Speaker
Well, the number is about $50 million dollars is what they're thinking. um If this movie releases in theaters with all the hype, I'm hoping it's good. With all the hype, it could it could make them a lot of money. Of course, this movie stars John Cena and Will Forte. It has a huge cast, live action slash animated, all starring Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunners. so um I'm excited to see it Everybody says it's awesome to see it and um um I'm hoping it's good, so we'll have to wait and see.
00:29:35
Speaker
um Speaking of Looney Tunes, Warner Brothers removed the entirety of Looney Tunes from Max.

Apple TV Plus Financial Challenges

00:29:40
Speaker
I guess to people but people just weren't watching it. Kind of like what they did with um Sesame Street. People weren't watching Sesame Street.
00:29:47
Speaker
the The people who are watching Max are us, adults. We want to see actual shows and stuff. we don't want what There's not a lot of binging for kids on there. They're on YouTube all the time.
00:29:59
Speaker
So I think I saw it was going to Tubi or something. I don't know. But Looney Tunes off of Max. um Report that Apple TV Plus is losing $1 billion dollars annually um as Apple services. They're saying that everybody's saying it. Ted Sarandos is talking a lot about it in interview this week that the, there's, it's just not doing what, what everybody else is doing. Netflix and prime and everybody else. They only have, they only have four great shows, couple of great movies, but they don't have the catalog that everybody else has. Plus they're not, they're not cycling out to other companies to put other movies on there as well.
00:30:39
Speaker
um But yeah, they they estimated that within a decade it would be $5 billion, dollars but they did $1 billion a year, so they're really, really off by what they thought they what what the what the negative was going to be in their

Dexter and WrestleMania Updates

00:30:52
Speaker
balance sheet. but um Casting news this week, Sopranos star Steve Sharippa is joining Dexter Resurrection and reprising his role from Dexter Newblood, David Magadhoff, I don't know his name, but he was in Dexter Newblood and he's going to be in Resurrection.
00:31:09
Speaker
he was He was one of the deputies at the police department. Yep. ye Cannot wait for this show. The cast is getting crazier and crazier every week. um The night of WrestleMania, after WrestleMania ends, there's going to be a roast.
00:31:24
Speaker
Not televised, which sucks, but it's going to be right after WrestleMania. People are going to shuffle over somewhere in Las Vegas, and they're going to see Tony Hishcliff and a whole bunch of friends, other comedians, wrestlers. i think The Miz is part of the dais, and Paul Heyman are going to be...
00:31:42
Speaker
doing a live roast of WrestleMania and wrestlers and everything. I wish they would televise it. They're making a mistake, especially on Netflix. You should televise this. um Maybe they haven't announced it yet. Maybe they will. but um Or Peacock.
00:31:55
Speaker
Or Peacock. Well, probably Netflix because Tony Hitchcock, I think, has has a deal with his show on there. Oh, okay. Yeah. Yeah, I don't know. I've got a new poster for the new Popeye movie. It's coming out, I believe, today um i believe it came out on digital today i'm not sure but put by the slayer man um yeah um freaky tales we talked about this trailer a few weeks ago um of course pedro pascal ben mendelson looked pretty good the trailer was looked pretty good um i don't know when this comes out i don't see a date but
00:32:30
Speaker
Yeah, looks good. Keep an eye on that. What's your thoughts on Saw 11 being stalled due to studio and producer tensions? know you probably heard that this week. Don't like it. Don't like It was supposed to come out in September. It got delayed. kept getting delayed. And for some reason, there's problems behind the scenes. I don't really understand it.
00:32:51
Speaker
Franchise going this long. It's got to be one of the longer horror horror franchises, right? It's got to be. oh Yeah. Yeah, I mean, Friday the 13th, maybe the biggest one, but yeah. um District 9 and Chappie filmmaker Neil Blomkamp is going to be writing a star trek Starship Troopers reboot based on the novel.
00:33:10
Speaker
um So this is going to come out for Sony. I do like Neil Blomkamp. I like Chappie, and I like District 9. Those are good movies. I like his vision. And I love Starship Troopers.
00:33:22
Speaker
I don't think I've ever seen Starship ship Troopers. I never saw it in the It's so fantastic. Yeah, never watched it. um yeah never watched it yeah have to watch that. I have to add that to my list. Starz is going be debuting a documentary called Magic City, the American Fantasy. If you're a hip-hop fan, Magic City has been brought up in a lot of hip-hop songs. There's a strip club in Atlanta. um They're going to be doing a, I think, five-part series on Starz.
00:33:47
Speaker
ah Drake's Entertainment Group and Jermaine Dupri the ones exclusive executive producing this. Um, so yeah, I don't have stars, so I don't know.
00:33:58
Speaker
Um, they're going to be making, they're going be making a new, series on Netflix, a competition show called the golden ticket, the Willy Wonka golden ticket show. No

New Shows and Spinoffs

00:34:06
Speaker
idea what this is about. Little teaser came out online this week.
00:34:09
Speaker
I'm not even sure when it's coming out, but yeah. Um, Christopher, Christopher, Christoph Waltz, of course, um, glorious bastards and a whole bunch and of, of, uh, Tarantino movies.
00:34:20
Speaker
Join the cast of Only Murders in the Building Season 5. I cannot wait for that. That's amazing news. um Another spinoff, we talked about it a while ago, but they're going to be making a new Big Bang Theory spinoff.
00:34:32
Speaker
um This one more related to the the original series, but it's going set in more of a modern time. Starring Stuart, who was the he ran the um comic book shop in the series. He's going starring in it, and the name of it they released this week was, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.
00:34:50
Speaker
um There's going to lot of other stars from the show, kind of secondary, third third characters, um kripke and a few other uh people that are on there um i have no idea i big bang theory is okay it's an okay show it's one of those things that it lasted like 12 seasons something like that um it's a good show it's just it's it's repetitive it's the same thing over and over and over again the same jokes recycled through for throughout the years um it's decent to watch i think believe it's all in max i'm not sure but
00:35:20
Speaker
um Speaking of shows, Disney Plus is going to be doing a new Power Rangers TV show. um It's probably not going to be Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. may not even be a reboot. This is supposed to be a Netflix. i don't know what happened to Netflix deal, but that's it's off of there.
00:35:35
Speaker
It's going be on Disney Plus. I believe Disney plus justney did the series for like 10 years or 15 years after least after i stopped watching. And as for Disney this week as well, um there's going to be a Coco 2. Coco 1 is a great it's one of my favorite Pixar movies, Disney movies.
00:35:54
Speaker
um They're going to doing a second one. I don't know how more you how more you could die. It's all about death. But yeah, coming out in 2029, I loved Coco, so I'm excited to see what this ends up being.
00:36:08
Speaker
ah Coco is just a visually great movie. and Great story as well. There's a couple of moments in that when I first watched it was like holy fuck moments. um Yeah, great movie. What do you take on this? Nintendo of America, they're going to be, I guess they've had a longstanding relationship with the Mariners. Did you know anything about this? i I didn't know that.
00:36:29
Speaker
Yeah, that's like, so Japan is huge for baseball, and the Mariners are kind of like Japan's team because of the proximity and the fact that Ichiro played there and whatnot.
00:36:40
Speaker
So it makes sense. So they're to be wearing, starting this season, the whole entire season, be wearing a Nintendo patch on their sleeve, as you can see in the picture there. um And they they're to be starting opening day on the 27th. Wow, they're starting early this year. Don't they usually start, like, the first week of April?
00:36:56
Speaker
The first game was actually played like four days ago. Oh, no shit. The dogers but Dodgers played the Cubs. Spring training is still going on for most teams, but um it's usually the last... It's usually anywhere from like the last weekend of March to the beginning of April. Okay.
00:37:14
Speaker
Announced today, House of Dragons Season 3 officially started filming. Excited for that. Coming out probably, what, next year they're saying? 2026? Mm-hmm. Excited for that. ah We got, finally, the first look yes of Karl Urban as Johnny Cage.
00:37:31
Speaker
Amazing. Amazing, amazing. yeah We all also got the first look of Katana, Shao Kahn, um scorpion coming back he was he was my favorite part of the movie the first one scorpion but yeah mortal kombat 2 very very excited for that movie coming out in october announced today well i'm gonna get your thoughts on this because i'm kind of have mixed feelings although i will say david hayman did a great job the harry potter franchise but amy pascal and david hayman amy pascal of course famous for sony was famous for Spider-Man, all the drama with that. She left there.
00:38:06
Speaker
um Are I to run the James Bond franchise for Amazon MGM Studios? I know that she had a a hand in Skyfall and all the other Sony Bond films on a later date.
00:38:17
Speaker
um But yeah, they're eyeing them to run the whole franchise for Amazon. What are your thoughts? what do you think of that? I think she involved... I think she was involved with Casino Royale, Quantum Solace, and Skyfall.
00:38:29
Speaker
They probably only mentioned Skyfall because that's like one of the most... but i I love Casino Royale, but Skyfall is also incredibly popular. um yeah But no.
00:38:41
Speaker
No, I don't like this at all. I do like i'd like David Heyman and what he did. I've seen him in interviews a bunch of times with Harry Potter. i like how he kept that Harry Potter franchise very, very fluid throughout the whole entire series for 11 years, however long it was ah however long those movies were being filmed and released. But yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about Amy Pascoe.
00:39:02
Speaker
We're going to talk about some swag. Swag! Stuff we all get. Come on, son. You know that's right. Minecraft coming out, I believe, in the beginning of April.
00:39:15
Speaker
We got some new figures. The only reason I'm bringing this up is because there is a Minecraft commercial with Grimace as a Minecraft player, my Minecraft carrier character.
00:39:26
Speaker
um And i guess I guess there's toys coming out not only um in the Happy Meal, but you can get these collectible... skins that you can use in Minecraft, and Grimace is one of them.
00:39:38
Speaker
It's kind of weird, but um yeah. Speaking of figures and shit, Hot Toys. official Officially announced the Deadpool version in the beginning of Deadpool and Wolverine with Wolverine's bones. Pictures looked awesome.
00:39:52
Speaker
um Of course, he's got the bones as a nunchuck, and he's also got his skeleton and his spine and his head as a weapon, as a as a battering weapon. Looks great. um This is coming out with Hot Toys. um Coming out for McFarlane figures is a new Venom figure announced today. It looked great. I want to bring that up.
00:40:12
Speaker
um And we're all we're here to talk about Funko Pops today. Number one, we'll start with some Funko Pops for Sopranos. We got the Pine Barrens 2-pack, which looks awesome.
00:40:25
Speaker
We got Furio, and we also got Bobby Bacala with a Toy Train, which I definitely need on my shelf. um And the Dexter figures, which i I've pre-ordered the two on the left.
00:40:37
Speaker
The one on the right is the one that's coveted, and that's going to be hard to find. That's going to be exclusive to Funko.com. um Of course, it's it's blood all over Dexter as he's been cutting up somebody, and that's going to be hard to find.
00:40:50
Speaker
But the one that we bought probably both pre-ordered this week, is Sean and Gus in pop figure form. How this has not happened until now is crazy.
00:41:02
Speaker
Sean and Gus came out on Amazon this week if you want to pre-order it. it does And this week, and announced today, this looks awesome, a um Back to the Future a DeLorean figure.
00:41:17
Speaker
um the door The thing that makes this different from all the other figures, um the door automatically opens, the window automatically opens, the lights, tons of lights in this thing, the tires on this, this from Back to the Future 2, so the tires on it automatically swivel,
00:41:37
Speaker
And they're motorized. It looks incredible. There's a stand for it as well. And i have a picture of the stand and the lights, the flux capacitor lights up and it looks like lightning. i saw the video. This looks incredible.
00:41:49
Speaker
um If I did not have the figure I got from the model that I made, I would definitely have invested, would rather invest it in something like this. Looks exciting. Looks awesome. Yeah, that looks really awesome.
00:42:01
Speaker
um Announced this week, J. Alphonse nick Nicholson. it looks familiar. I don't know what I've seen him in, um but he's joined the Lanterns on HBO. um I don't know who he's playing. I don't think they announced who he's playing at all. no some Some recurring role, but maybe and maybe he was in John Wick. Maybe that's why where I recognize him. I don't know. He looks familiar. but um Also, col Colin Farrell. This is the weirdest news of the week.
00:42:25
Speaker
um Colin Farrell is and so and talks to stars in Sergeant Rock, taking over what um what was supposed to be Daniel Craig. Daniel Craig, yeah. Yeah, starring in that movie.
00:42:37
Speaker
um He's already the penguin in the other part of the DC Elseworlds, so yeah, we'll to wait and see on that. um Got a new glimpse of ah Ironheart came out today.
00:42:49
Speaker
um This comes out in June, the series. Can't wait for that. Avengers Doomsday and Secret... What? At least one of us I'm excited for it. I liked her in Black Panther.
00:43:03
Speaker
Avengers Doomsday and Secret Wars, um talking about all that concept art that leaked a couple weeks ago. and And the director said, that's not our concept art, that's not our story, so don' they have no idea where that came from. I think they're bullshitting everybody because it seemed pretty real to me, but.
00:43:21
Speaker
Also revealed that they're pulling stories from both the Secret Wars stories, one from the 80s, one from the They're going to be pulling parts of each story and bringing into the movies, so that's pretty cool.
00:43:33
Speaker
um Jonathan Majors, finally in news, coming out promoting his movie magazine Dreams. This is coming out, believe, in a couple of weeks. want to see that. No, it comes out today. It came out today. had no idea.
00:43:45
Speaker
um He said that he wrote a letter to Kevin Feige after the studio fired him, and he has no bad blood between them. He's hoping that if they ever decide to bring him back, he's all in. um He's watching what they're doing, loving what they're doing, and he's pulling for them. If they need me, they know where I'm at.
00:44:00
Speaker
So, yeah, he's kind of leaving the door wide open even though the door was slammed shut on his face. So... um That's it for the show. That's it for news. um Next week, Daredevil episode 5 and 6. There's going two airing next week.
00:44:13
Speaker
Reacher finale is next week. um Celtic City episode 4. Dark Side of the Ring premieres next week. All about mankind in the Hell in a Cell.
00:44:24
Speaker
um The Studio and Apple TV Plus premieres next week, getting rave reviews. Sometime in the next couple of weeks, I'm going to be reading. I know you're pretty much almost done with the Justice League, Justice comic book by Alex Ross. i'm going to try to read it this week. We'll try to get into it.
00:44:40
Speaker
um And, of course, I'm going to try to finish Severance this week, and we'll talk and talk about it. Next week, I'm giving you an extra week if you want to go to the theaters. I will be talking about Novocaine next week.
00:44:51
Speaker
Oh, I forgot you saw that. Yeah. You want to give a quick, like, one-word reaction what you thought of it? Fun. Fun. Okay, cool. Yeah, it's all here that's all i've heard. So, yeah, I cannot wait. um Thank you, everybody, and we will talk to you next time.
