Mysterious Repetition of 'Keeper'

00:00:31
Speaker
Keeper. Keeper. Keeper.

Culinary Disappointments: Popeyes and Popcorn

00:01:25
Speaker
Hey, what's going on? Raymond, how's it going? um Doing good. Doing good. I got to tell you something. What's going This is kind of an impromptu fat fuck session. i't I forgot to tell you to get the sounder ready, so we'll just pretend the sounder played.
00:01:40
Speaker
Okay. But I went to Popeyes. Okay. and had their pickle something chicken sandwich. It basically has like a red spicy-ish pickle sauce on it. Yeah, yeah. I knew that was the thing they're doing. okay Would not recommend.
00:01:55
Speaker
Would not recommend. I knew they had a pick pick pickle menu now. Yeah. yeah um They also have fried pickles there, but they're running. It was the worst Popeye's experience ever. It took me literally like an hour to order and get my food.
00:02:08
Speaker
Yeah. The other thing, so we're into the movies yesterday? Yep. We will be discussing that. Yep. You got popcorn but no drink. Yeah, did. That was very concerning. Did you get a drink?
00:02:21
Speaker
Yeah, i did. I had a drink. Okay, I didn't see you with drink. It must been on your left. Because I saw you eating popcorn and I didn't see you sipping drink and I was sitting there like downing my Pepsi because the fucking popcorns look goddamn salty. It was very salty.
00:02:32
Speaker
It was extremely salty popcorn. Yeah. They go a little heavy with the salt there. But yeah. They do. They do. They do. We did see a couple movies. Actually, we both saw a couple movies. You saw one earlier in the week we're going to talk about as well.
00:02:44
Speaker
um We saw a great movie yesterday we're going talk about. ah Probably my favorite movie of the year so far. We're only four

TV and Film Analysis: 'Daredevil Born Again' and 'Mobland'

00:02:51
Speaker
months in. but um But let's get started with the finale of Daredevil Born Again.
00:02:59
Speaker
um Show is good. Not on the level of what Netflix was. No. We kind of knew that going in. It was probably going to be Disney-fied. We knew that. um There was a really cool gruesome scene in this show, though, in this episode.
00:03:15
Speaker
um Kingpin crushed a guy's head. The commissioner of the police department, actually. um And the scene was bruce ah gruesome and brutal.
00:03:26
Speaker
Um, and they showed the, the prosthetic head that they used that they ended up using it for the crushing scene. It looked real. ah so Um, it reminds you a lot of the Kingpin of old where he cut the guy's head off with the door and first season of daredevil. I think it was first season, but a lot of great stuff.
00:03:47
Speaker
Um, NYC by the end of this is now under martial law. Um, vigilantes are being hunted. um Matt Murdock needs to recruit, quote, an army before they storm the castle.
00:03:59
Speaker
um I figured maybe we would see some of the Defenders maybe by the end. Quick cameos. Didn't see that. Everybody's saying, oh shit, we should see Spider-Man. He's being hunted now. He's in the vigilante.
00:04:10
Speaker
We're not going to see Spider-Man, unfortunately. um The showrunners are saying we're not even going to see the Defenders, but I think they're kind of distancing themselves from that. We'll see what happens. so There's going be a season two. Filming it currently.
00:04:22
Speaker
um We did get an after-credits scene. We saw Frank Castle. He has been he has been ah detained by Kingpin in a little jail cell where all vigilantes are being held, um including him and the swordsman and a few other people running amok in the city.
00:04:39
Speaker
um But he attempts to skate escape Kingpin's jail um for vigilantes, and that's where the show leaves off, and we already know that this is probably gonna lead to the uh punisher special presentation they're going be filming and releasing i believe next year before season two comes out at around the same time um but yeah great great ending um probably one of the better episodes this season makes you makes you definitely want to see how how how much of the story um is being held back because there's a lot of a lot of stuff that was left on um unanswered and the big thing is like we've been mentioning throughout the whole entire season is Foggy and Nelson really dead if you're going by comic book lore um and the show owners have said that they are listening to the fans they've seen that theory they're not they're not commenting on it so we'll see if it comes back to that or not but yeah great show great ending have you had a chance to watch Mobland yet?
00:05:35
Speaker
I haven't watched it yet no Oh my god, what a great fucking crime drama. This is on Paramount+. plus I'm not going to talk about it much until you watch it, but um Tom Hardy is great in this show. We know Tom Hardy is great in anything, but he's great in this show.
00:05:50
Speaker
UK mob family, he's kind of the cleanup guy. and working ah He's not a part of the family. He's kind of the cleanup guy that they hire to come clean up messes. um And the head of the family is pier is Pierce Brosnan.
00:06:03
Speaker
And Helen Mirren is his wife. And they have Patty. I can't remember his name. Maybe he's the father in Game of Thrones. He's one of the sons. It's a great, great show. ah Paramount Plus. They're three episodes in right now. Hello, Kitty.
00:06:17
Speaker
ah Three episodes in right now. They air on Sunday. price They air Sundays. He's a real son of a bitch. Hello, kid. Okay. Alright. The studio. hasn't seen me in a week, so freaking out.
00:06:28
Speaker
Yeah, you just got back, yeah. Go fucking take a shit or something. Alright. Take a The studio. Good episode. This a great show. have not

Exploring 'The Last of Us' Season 2

00:06:37
Speaker
watched it, it's on Apple TV. This is an awesome episode of the studio.
00:06:39
Speaker
Yep. Last couple episodes have been really... Actually, the whole series so far has been pretty good up to eop episode five right now, but ah Great show. It airs on azon Tuesdays, I believe, on Apple TV. I thought it dropped Wednesdays.
00:06:52
Speaker
Maybe Wednesday. I can't remember. But yeah, great show. You should be watching it. It's very funny. ah Seth Rogen. I mean, just classic Seth Rogen. um And we got a premiere this week, a TV premiere of The Last of Us Season 2.
00:07:06
Speaker
um Seven episodes total this season. We know now that probably this season is going to be adapting the first half of the video game at least.
00:07:18
Speaker
There is going to be a third season probably doing the other half. um Game comparisons and speculations. Now, spoiler for the next minute.
00:07:30
Speaker
We already know the big spoiler that happens in the beginning of the game is probably going to either happen in the next episode or in episode 3 and Joel is going to be murdered. by Abby.
00:07:42
Speaker
um In fact, the social media game for for them is crazy because they even posted a picture of the Black Book Choice. um So, as far as the game, I know you've played, that yeah I haven't even opened part two because I never finished part one of the game.
00:07:58
Speaker
um What are your thoughts going forward of how they're going to handle the next six episodes of the show and how they're going to tackle this well big big arc that's going happen? one thing that uh pissed me off is like the first scene in this episode is abby talking about getting her revenge and basically you find out what her motive is which you don't find out until about 10 hours into the game like that's like a big driving force that get you to keep playing um is to find out what the fuck who she is um so they clearly changed that up a bit um
00:08:32
Speaker
And there was no therapist in the game either. um Seeing this play out, they could drag the Joel thing out till mid-season, maybe like sometime in episode four if they wanted to.
00:08:45
Speaker
It depends on how they're structuring the second half of the game or the, or how they're going to season three. Um, cause I feel like we will have a flashback episode. We talked about that on text.
00:08:56
Speaker
Um, yeah maybe that could be episode three to stretch it out. So you get Joel for one more episode or something. Um, that, that could happen also. Um,
00:09:07
Speaker
but But I mean, I kind of trust him because the first season was very good and very well paced. Outside of the end of the first season was weird because like that's such a long part in the game. And then the end of the first season, it's like literally like 15 minutes.
00:09:20
Speaker
um Okay. But yeah. um Interesting to see what they do. We know that um the husband that that the therapist was talking about who's played by Catherine O'Hara, the husband is played by Joey Pants.
00:09:33
Speaker
Right. Who's in everything. He's in the Matrix. He's in Sopranos. He's in everything. um So we know for sure there's a flashback. We're just not sure where the placement is going to be. And it's going to be pretty much where Joel and Ellie had the falling out.
00:09:47
Speaker
If I were to guess it, maybe after he gets attacked, it'll be like the end of an episode will be where he's attacked. And then we'll get the flashback. And then we'll get the aftermath at the end of that episode. If I guess what's going to happen. they could do that.
00:10:00
Speaker
Yep. um But, yeah, there's there's ah there's a big, big spoiler about to happen. um Let's just say Pedro Pascal is to have a lot of free time on his hands because he won't have to do The Last of Us anymore.
00:10:12
Speaker
But, yeah, great show so far. I guarantee they bring him back for flashbacks or something. Oh, definitely. Definitely, yeah. But, yeah. Yep, for sure. um And there's no talk of a third game, correct? So this is... ah Yeah, he actually said that he's not planning to do a third game.
00:10:28
Speaker
And I guess the second game, which I haven't finished yet, the second game ends somewhat of a cliffhanger. so Okay, interesting. yeah Yeah, I hope we're not in Game of Thrones territory where they have to go to the next season without

Sports Documentaries: 'Celtic City' and Red Sox Insights

00:10:41
Speaker
planned ending. but Yeah. that ah that not have planned ending but Celtic City, episode 7, into the 90s, the turbulent 90s.
00:10:51
Speaker
Building the franchise after Larry Bird leaves, talking about Reggie Lewis, part of the Boston community. you you grew up in the area, um so he's very much part of the city.
00:11:02
Speaker
McHale, Parrish, both leave. McHale retires, i believe Parrish goes to another team. um And the Boston Garden, big part of this episode. Yep. Talking about it being torn down in 1996, 1995, in the opening.
00:11:19
Speaker
Parrish went to the Bulls and won two more championships before he retired. Okay. He was on those early 90s Bulls teams. Oh, that's pretty good. actor Yeah, yeah, that's good. ah Good timing. Rick Pitino, the 1996 takeover. I wanted to ask you about him and what your thoughts were, Rick Pitino. Yeah.
00:11:35
Speaker
I like him now. He seems like he's like, actually like, was like, yeah, i fucked up. Um, the way he sounded in this documentary, uh, cause he even said himself a bunch of times that he was just kind of full of himself and all players were saying the same thing.
00:11:48
Speaker
Um, but, I'll never forgive him for trading Chauncey Bullops literally like 40 games into his rookie season, and now he's a Hall of Famer with multiple rings.
00:11:59
Speaker
Wow. So that was โ€“ and he kept Ron Mercer, the later draft pick, so i was โ€“ Yeah, I he took all the I read pretty much didn't have much power anyways, but he took his title away from him, which like that like I think it was Janet McMullen said that he didn't have to do that.
00:12:16
Speaker
um But yeah, but yeah, yeah. Yeah. Red Red Arbok taking a step back, kind of getting out of the limelight at the end of the ninety s And Paul Pierce being drafted. Big part of the next championship run that happens in the 2000s. I know that.
00:12:32
Speaker
um Also talked about him being stabbed, and that's where the next episode is going to pick up. Yes. I can't go away from that. Benzino stabbed him. ah We're going be getting into the championship run of ah of the Celtics in the next couple of episodes. And there's two episodes left.
00:12:48
Speaker
um So around 2000, when did they win their next title? Was it mid, mid 2000? 2008. Okay. Yeah. Yep. So we're going to talk about that pretty much pretty soon. um I think next episode and then probably the next episode after that, we'll talk about the current team. So very exciting.
00:13:03
Speaker
Getting before we end the nineties, the turbulent nineties ended with a team that's kind of in turmoil because they didn't have star players. They lost Reggie Lewis.
00:13:15
Speaker
um he had a He had a cocaine problem as well. Surprising. um But the first one that died from cocaine was Len Bias. We talked about him for a few episodes before this. And there was a documentary that came out in 2009 on ESPN.
00:13:30
Speaker
recommended I watched it. um This had his family on it, which was not on this documentary at all. His mother was on the Celtic City one. I believe his father has since passed.
00:13:42
Speaker
But really didn't go into as much of bias as I thought they would have. No. ah But it did it did kind of fill in some of the gaps, um especially with his family. His brother was a big part. His brother is a big part of that. His family is big part of it. But ah yeah, pretty good. It's only like 50 minutes, so it's really, really good.
00:13:57
Speaker
It filled in some of the gaps of the stuff that wasn't told on this documentary. The Celtic City documentary, if you want to know the basics of this team, the history, go on HBO and just stream the hell out of this show. It is great. And I'm not even a sports fan, really, but I love history, and that's why I love shit like this.
00:14:16
Speaker
And that's why I like documentaries like the next one we're going to talk about. This came out on... That's the Without Bias documentary. This came out on Netflix, I believe, last week. The Clubhouse, a year with the Red Sox.
00:14:29
Speaker
I believe this is the answer to the comeback. The documentary that came out was all about the 2004 Red Sox, which was probably great on ratings. So they wanted to take a modern look at the Red Sox now, currently.
00:14:41
Speaker
Who are not great. They are on the bottom. No, they are not great at all. So it's very surprising. They even say it in one of the episodes of the documentary, and it's like, why the fuck would the Red Sox, hello, Kitty, why the hell would the Red Sox do a documentary when when when they're this bad? Why would they want to show their weakness?
00:14:58
Speaker
um I think part of the one that was 20 years after the 2004 championship. I think that's why, yeah. And I think, like I mentioned, I think the first, the documentary that came out last year probably did great numbers for Netflix. So they said, why don't you guys record the rest of your your year with a new team and see how it is.
00:15:14
Speaker
um Very surprising, but and first episode's pretty good. My big takeaway from this is this team looks like a parody team of Red Sox players. yeah like I don't know anybody anymore. and like I remember everybody back in the day. even i wasn't even into baseball that much, but I knew everyone.
00:15:33
Speaker
um yeah All these kids are kids. they don't They don't look like they should be on the team. They were all born in 1996, 1998, 2000. But yeah, this is called the Clubhouse, a year with the Red Sox.
00:15:45
Speaker
um Alex Cora, he runs the team. He's general manager currently, I believe still. A couple of players I never heard of. Tristan Kassas, he's the main guy. I guess he's kind of the head of the team. I have no idea.
00:16:00
Speaker
And Jaron Duran, Duran, a whole episode about him. Cam Boozer, there was a great episode. i like that. I really like that story. Cam Boozer, 31 years old, never played in the major leagues, got called up last year.
00:16:15
Speaker
That cool. That was really cool. I like that story too. But yeah, this is a this is a decent documentary. If you want to know anything about the current Red Sox organization. know we only watched half of it We're gonna watch the other half and talk about it next week.
00:16:29
Speaker
I know the tea i know the the season didn't end well. So interesting to see where the second half goes. yeah The team is not great right now. Baseball is not great in general. Besides Aaron Judge, I can't tell you another. don't even know his name off the top of my head. Yeah, the other guy. I can't even tell you his name off the top my head.
00:16:48
Speaker
I know he's great, but. um And we watched a baseball movie, which was okay, called Game 6. This came out in 2005, starring Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr., Catherine O'Hara.
00:17:02
Speaker
um It was okay. It was boring as shit. Very boring. I was bored. Very boring in the beginning. um But the ending, the last, like, 30, 40 minutes kind of had, that in 1986, Red Sox-Mets rivalry and the bunk in the Buckner fumble and all that stuff was all part of the storyline of what was going on. And and um with that happening, it kind of turned Michael Keaton's character into a,
00:17:31
Speaker
into a murderous rampage, kind of. It's just a very boring movie. um But I wanted to watch something that was kind of Red Sox related, since we're talking about Red Sox this week. but um I think next week we're going to watch The Babe.
00:17:45
Speaker
I never saw that with with John Goodman, and I believe that's it for the month, because I think next week's the last week of April. um Yeah, great some great movies,

Wrestling Documentaries and 'WrestleMania 9'

00:17:54
Speaker
baseball movies. We're going to talk about The Babe. I never saw that.
00:17:57
Speaker
Um, Dark Side of the Ring, were you able to catch up on the two episodes we missed last week? Yes, I was. Finally, they updated them. Finally, iTunes straightened their ass out. Um, we did see the big Big Van Vader episode. Great episode. Um, Leon seemed like he had a lot of, uh, issues.
00:18:16
Speaker
Mental stability issues. Um... He was a football player, I believe, became a wrestler, went over to Japan and created this monster-like character, Vader, and came over to America, worked for WCW, worked for WWF.
00:18:33
Speaker
Did not get along well with a lot of people, including Shawn Michaels, who said he smelled when he wrestled him. Yep. um great great Great documentary talking about him. And the next one, Tony Atlas. We know he's crazy. We've seen him in interviews. We've seen him talk about shit.
00:18:52
Speaker
This one talked a lot about his foot fetish. Yeah. And he talked about and it not being really a sexualized foot fetish. it was more of him just like to get stomped on.
00:19:04
Speaker
And it wasn't like in the nuts or anything. It was like women's with women's shoes stepping on his face, on his body. Weird fetish. yeah Weird, strange guy. um But he went through a lot of hurdles. Right, but he went through a lot of hurdles in the 80s to become a one of the most prominent African-American wrestlers, and especially in the early 80s, teaming up with the Rock's dad, Rocky Johnson, and being in tag team champs. Talked a lot about that and whole bunch of other stuff with him. he He lives in Maine currently, Auburn, Maine.
00:19:38
Speaker
He has a wife that lives in a nursing home. But not really his wife, I don't think. I don't think they were ever legally married. It's kind of just like the Cracker Jack ring. But yeah, he does take care of her. He goes in there every day, cooks for her, and takes care of her. Bathes her, as he says. but ah This is a good episode, too. Great episode. We always talk about every every season of this. How can they hows can they find new material to talk about?
00:20:01
Speaker
they They seem to be able to get a 40-minute episode out of these characters pretty well. so I believe next week is superstar Billy Graham. Don't know much about him. That's going to interesting. I know he he had a short-lived career.
00:20:14
Speaker
um He was big, though, when he when he was around. We'll talk about that next week. um This weekend is WrestleMania 41. Yes. yes And they're doing a whole bunch of stuff on Peacock, documentaries. And the big one was WrestleMania 9 becoming a spectacle. came out last week. We watched it this past weekend.
00:20:35
Speaker
um This is all footage I guess was lost in a vault somewhere. Was filmed for a documentary back in the 90s. Which if you know anything about wrestling before social media took over and Triple H took over.
00:20:50
Speaker
Kayfabe was big. Nobody talked outside of the wrestling business about how things happened. um Stories were kept secret, kept protected.
00:21:01
Speaker
um The Undertaker did not lose kayfabe until he actually retired. that's how That's how protected a lot of these wrestlers are for the storylines, for everything, for their characters, going going in especially in the It was big.
00:21:14
Speaker
um The whole curtain call thing, everybody knows about that with Triple H and The Click. um The reason why they had so much backlash is because they were kind of giving a nod to the fans like, hey, we know we know you know this is fake, but here, let's yeah let's hug the bad guy as they leave.
00:21:29
Speaker
um This documentary was great, um but it would never for for all obvious reasons, it was never released in the 90s. And it released now because there's just a lot of cool stuff in it.
00:21:40
Speaker
yeah Half the people are gone, have have died. um All of them have retired. None of them are wrestling anymore. Bret Hart was great in this documentary. He had interviews talking about Hulk Hogan, who is always a liar in every interview, everything he's ever in.
00:21:57
Speaker
um But yeah, great documentary. It's on Peacock currently. um Were you watching wrestling at the time when this came out? were you Yeah, love WrestleMania 9. You were in the 9th, so I was wondering what your what your thoughts were. ah I loved it.
00:22:11
Speaker
um It was different. And, yeah, they're doing this because, of course, they're in Vegas again for the first time. Yeah, they're in Vegas. They made it like a Caesar's Palace type of look. It was interesting because they basically built the venue, which was an interesting way to have a WrestleMania.
00:22:26
Speaker
Yep. Yep. Very much set in Caesar's time. In Caesar's palace, they had the the pillars, they had the robes. oh goes jim ross Toga. Jim Ross's first night, he was in a toga. He always complains about that on this podcast.
00:22:41
Speaker
You see him in a toga, you can tell he's pissed off. But yeah, it was a great little documentary. A couple hours, it was it was pretty eye-opening. Bruce... Bruce...
00:22:56
Speaker
Pritchard, big part of it. Of course, i think using his podcast, as they've already talked about this on there ad nauseum. So, yeah, no no wonder he

Horror and Thriller Movie Reviews: 'Drop' and 'Sinners'

00:23:06
Speaker
was on there. but um Kevin watched a movie he's going to talk about first. He watched it at the beginning of the week called Drop.
00:23:13
Speaker
Um, I've only heard a little bit about it and I've seen the trailer where, um, somebody, somebody's eating dinner, I believe, and they get airdropped a something on their phone.
00:23:24
Speaker
Um, other than that, I don't know much more about it. and i know it's a horror movie or a thriller or something. Yeah. Um, it's a good date night movie. Um, okay I was alone in the theater for this. That was that was fun.
00:23:36
Speaker
um But yeah, basically this woman who about four years prior got out of a really bad marriage, abusive relationship, and is finally going on a first date again with Brandon Skelnar, a lot of people's choice for Batman.
00:23:54
Speaker
And um seeing him in this, he is Bruce Wayne to a T. Whether they would cast somebody that's 32 years old remains to be seen, but he could pull it off, just to say my piece on that.
00:24:06
Speaker
But yeah, so they're on this date, and she gets the airdrop, and he's like trying to figure out who it is, because you have to be within 50 feet or whatever to get an airdrop. It's not an actual like airdrop. They make up the name of it, because he makes a joke about how he prefers the Apple's airdrop to whatever...
00:24:22
Speaker
Yeah. um probably overrites this issue i'm guess like yeah but yeah so basically the whole thing is movie she's getting directions on what to do next through airdrops and she at one point tells him that the airdrops dropped because one of the airdrops says you have to kill your date um She like goes into the bathroom to like try to figure it out and like finds out that like her table was selected for her and there's like a microphone so the person that is doing this can hear everything that she's saying and and doing and whatnot. um
00:24:55
Speaker
And this movie going in, like it's only going to work if the third act works. um The idea of this movie, the premise of this movie. And the third act gets a little...
00:25:06
Speaker
creative and outlandish. Um, but overall, I really did enjoy, um, this movie. Um, I do want you to see it when it comes out. Um, that could be like Tuesday.
00:25:19
Speaker
yeah Um, but, uh, I really did enjoy this film and would recommend it. Thumbs up three and a half. Um, I will watch it again when it comes, when I, when I have the chance. Excellent. Excellent.
00:25:31
Speaker
um I saw a movie before we saw the big one this week. I did see Warfare, which we've been talking about off and on. um This is a follow-up to Alex Garland, I believe, direct who directed Civil War. This is his follow-up.
00:25:42
Speaker
His next movie is 28 Days Later. I think he's producing it. 28 years. Years later. Or maybe he's not directing it. Danny ah Boyle is directing it still. He wrote it. I believe. yeah yeah he wrote it.
00:25:54
Speaker
um But this is his war movie set in 2006, set in Iraq. or ah or Afghanistan, I believe. I can't remember whether exactly. All you need to know is' in the Middle East.
00:26:06
Speaker
And it's about this group of men and Navy SEALs who are stuck in this home. The whole entire movie, hour and a half, there is in one setting. They're in this building and they are being attacked.
00:26:20
Speaker
And they have to figure out a way out. They're calling for help from the United States Army to come get them. And hello, Kitty. I see your whiskers. um they're asking They're asking for help and people are getting hurt.
00:26:34
Speaker
Wow. The cat is fraught, right? um But yeah, great, great movie. Very intense. um Some of the war scenes are some of the most gruesome I've seen in ah in a movie like this.
00:26:46
Speaker
And of course, Saving Private Ryan is probably the worst I've ever seen. Everybody says how accurate it is. i believe this may be pretty accurate too. yeah um but Very, very good. four Four out of five for me. Nice. um and definitely recommend very, very good theater experience because there's a lot of surprise stuff.
00:27:06
Speaker
All of a sudden, bombs get thrown and and guns go off and people are coming in it through windows. It's crazy. um Great story, though. And Alex Garland is great for these type of movies. They brought in real Navy SEALs to do the choreography for this, um which was pretty good. They showed a little scene at the end of the credits, um not only showing who the characters looked like in real life, some of them being blacked out because these people must be still in the Navy SEALs, I'm guessing. But yeah um some of them did work behind the scenes and did some of the choreographed fight scenes and gunfights. So it's pretty cool. um But we both went to the movies after I saw Warfare,
00:27:42
Speaker
And we saw the movie of the weekend, maybe even movie of the year. um We're only four months in, but we'll have to wait and see. But Sinners, holy shit. Good, glad you liked it, because we didn't talk about it after was over.
00:27:55
Speaker
One issue I have with it is we did not see it in IMAX. Yep. Because this movie would have been spectacular. Everyone told me that I've talked about it on my Discord with Thoreau, like, you gotta see it in It's like a travel day.
00:28:10
Speaker
The other thing that we missed, there was an after-credits scene, including the mid-credits scene that we saw. We completely missed. um where the main character is a brand new kid, unknown, I believe, hired for this movie. I don't even know his name.
00:28:24
Speaker
But he was brought in, and he sings in the movie, does a fantastic job, plays guitar in the movie, I believe. um And he sings This Little Light of Mine. Going into this movie, not a lot of people knew what it was about other than the rumors that it was a vampire movie.
00:28:40
Speaker
Right. um The history of this movie, Ryan Kluger, I saw this article that came out today, talked about Metallica's Song 1 was a major inspiration for this movie. He wanted the movie to feel like a song, so I used Metallica's 1.
00:28:53
Speaker
It starts off in intense and gets melllo melodic and going somewhere just fucking crazy towards the end. very good depiction of how this story ended up. Started off as a 1920s, gunrunner scene right out of al Capone, Chicago.
00:29:10
Speaker
In fact, these two twins who are played by Michael B. Jordan in dual roles. um Did work for Al Capone in Chicago, grew up in Mississippi, came back to Mississippi, and were trying to start, um i don't know if they were trying to be legitimate, but they were trying to start their there their own like business on their own, ah away from all the gangster shit that they dealt with in Chicago.
00:29:31
Speaker
So they moved to Mississippi. um And the whole story has a lot to do, not with religion necessarily, but sinners and um i want i don't know we should get into the spoilers or not.
00:29:45
Speaker
um Everybody knows it's a vampire movie and you see it from the trailers that a lot of the people get turned in this movie. It does happen. The main character, the main vampire is the guy, the white guy in the middle of the poster. If you're watching on YouTube. Yes. i don't I don't know his name, but he's... Jack O'Connell.
00:30:01
Speaker
Jack O'Connell, okay. First time you see him show up on screen. He was in that movie. he was the guy He was in that movie about dude being stuck on a boat for like 42 days during World War II.
00:30:12
Speaker
um Okay. He's like almost like he looks nothing like that anymore because he had to lo he was like 120 pounds when he filmed that because he was supposed to look like he hadn't eaten in 42 Okay. but Okay. um Well, he was great. The first time you see him in this movie, he comes, the sun is going down, and you see him steaming. You're thinking it's steam, but it's not.
00:30:33
Speaker
If you know vampires, when they hit sun, they burn up. But the sun is going down at sunset, and he comes and he knocks on someone's door to let them in. It's all the vampire tropes you know from lore become a part of this story. Garlic, the stake in the heart, yeah silver, all that stuff.
00:30:51
Speaker
um And Ryan Coogler did an amazing job putting that into a Mississippi 1930s time period, which was fantastic.
00:31:01
Speaker
This movie looked stunning from scene to scene. That's why I said we missed out seeing it in an IMAX. Yeah. Because it would have looked fantastic in IMAX. whatve sounded The sound in this was amazing. the Everything everything coming at it coming out at you looked amazing.
00:31:15
Speaker
The whole entire movie was a must-see for me. yeah um Best movie this year so far. I've been going between a four and a half and a five. I'm probably going stick with a four and a half.
00:31:26
Speaker
um But it was really, really good. Michael B. Jordan working off of himself. Incredible. you would You would think he really had a twin brother if you were watching this had no idea. Yeah, because he played them both completely differently.
00:31:39
Speaker
He did, for sure. It reminded me of the Winklevi in the Facebook movie because they were the same actor. And the first time I saw that, course, I knew Michael B. Jordan going into this.
00:31:49
Speaker
I didn't know that actor. I thought it was just twins, but nope. Yep. Hailee Steinfeld. Incredible in this movie. um and sets up a great sequel, which we'll get into in a minute.
00:32:01
Speaker
um But I wish I knew the kid's name who plays the guitar. He is amazing. He's going to star for this movie. yeah um And I think it has to be him really singing and playing guitar, I'm guessing, because he was incredible in this movie. yeah um The music in this movie was great. There was a scene where um the way this is kind of depicted, that music can bring out a lot of inner soul.
00:32:24
Speaker
um And also it can bring... back soul from the past and the future. There's one scene where he's playing in this barn that these twins have bought and theyre kind of throwing a shindig in this barn. And he's playing and his and his music is so soulful that not only does it bring out visions of the past that people can't really see but it's kind of like, just like Yeah.
00:32:44
Speaker
but you see people from the past dancing but you also see people from the future dancing and you see it you see somebody in the dja table in the bar you see it just kind of the way it was depicted was really really cool looking i see some bebo ah um be box while wow beatboxing you see a whole bunch of cool stuff But yeah, really, really cool movie. Four and a half out of five for me, and it definitely sets up a sequel. There was a mid-credits scene.
00:33:09
Speaker
um You find out there were a couple survivors, um and I don't want to get into the spoilers of it. was really, really cool it was depicted. ah Buddy Guy, I believe he is a... I forgot. I thought he passed away, but he was the cameo at the end.
00:33:25
Speaker
yeah i don't want to get into more than that, but very, very cool. um Yeah. I give it a five. Yeah, it was it was almost perfect in my eyes. Yeah, i was I was between a four and a half and a five. And probably if I saw it again, it may be a five. So, yeah, very, very good.

Behind the Scenes of 'Superman 2'

00:33:40
Speaker
Year of Superman. We are just a few months away from Superman. In fact, we got something we're gonna talk about today that came out, but and not a trailer. We haven't seen a new trailer yet, but we don't get a little behind the scenes thing we'll talk about later. But um Superman 2.
00:33:55
Speaker
It came out in 1980. We talked about it a little bit when talked about Superman 1, but this was filmed right at the same time as Superman 1. um Filming got so chaotic that they canceled the filming with da with Richard Donner in the middle of it and hired richard Richard Lester, I believe yeah his name, um to come in and finish the filming, um take over the directing duties, and change the story a little bit.
00:34:27
Speaker
And we'll to get into that right now. um This is a direct continuation of the first film, picked up right where it left off. um The original concept of this movie, um the original concept of everything was...
00:34:39
Speaker
um Actually, we'll get into that when we talk about the Donner cut. um But there was a lot of studio interferences with the Sawkins. um Richard Donner ended up getting fired between the movies right after f Superman 1 came out in the theaters.
00:34:53
Speaker
um And the Sawkins, they had a big falling out with him. They ended hiring Richard Donner to finish it. um He directed Richard Donner, Richard Lester directed Hard Day's Night.
00:35:04
Speaker
Help, couple of Beatles movies. And he ah ended up directing Superman 3, which we'll talk about probably next week or the week after. um He was ah brought in during Donner's shoot to ease the tensions during the time. cause It was pretty bad when they were filming Superman 1 and 2 back-to-back.
00:35:20
Speaker
um Brought him in, Salkinds were trying and to ease the tensions between Salkinds and Donner. um He became the second unit director and an uncredited associate producer at the time.
00:35:31
Speaker
um This is what they look like. ah Richard Donner on the left. um Lester on the right. um Donner ended up filming 75%. uh, before they abandoned the second film to finish the first film, because it was already delayed. they needed to come out.
00:35:47
Speaker
Um, when, when he was fired and they, they hired Richard Lester, a lot of the cast and a lot of the crew refused to return for reshoots to film this for, to film this new version of the movie that was going coming out.
00:36:00
Speaker
Gene Hackman being one of them, he refused to return, um, showing loyalty to Richard Donner. Um, A stunt level was brought in, voice impersonator, um, to film in overdub scenes that Gene Hackman had already filmed from, uh, Richard Donner's film.
00:36:16
Speaker
Um, and, uh, after Donner's firing, several other actors and crew members, uh, I know, I know, uh, fuck, uh, Warren Beatty, there's a few other ones that refused to came back come back. The big one, um, uh, hold on, um,
00:36:33
Speaker
Also, the order in order for Richard Lester to be officially director, credited for director, um the the decision was made for Lester to reshoot most of the second film. So they decided that they were going to just have him reshoot scenes completely.
00:36:48
Speaker
um Two days after the first film's release, released the other big missing piece of this movie was Marlon Brando. Marlon Brando sued the Salkinds for $50 million, dollars claiming that he never received percentage of the film's first gro the first film's gross.
00:37:03
Speaker
um Filed a restraining order to prevent use of his likeness from the second movie, um which was denied in court. However, he was granted $15 million, dollars and because of this, the Salkinds announced... that they were removing all of Brando's scenes that were already filmed under Richard Donner, and they were going to bring in a new character new actor to play Jor-El, and that was going to prevent the and the initial back end that he was going be getting from the second movie, and they wanted to stop that.
00:37:31
Speaker
um Because of this setback, Superman's mom became the the mentor of this movie. She was the one that was in the Fortress of Solitude, Laura. She had a motherly influence.
00:37:42
Speaker
um And yeah, we'll talk about that more in the Donner Cut in a minute. But um Christopher Reeves took a filming filming of Somewhere in Time. Just talked about it a couple of months ago. um During the hiatus, when everything was going on, changing in the directors, um and he was initially unavailable.
00:37:58
Speaker
ah The Salkinds sued Christopher Reeves, telling him was breach of contract, making him return. um With a little bit more creative input um during the contract negotiations, agency he became more more hands-on with the story.
00:38:14
Speaker
um and Especially after he was uneasy and uneasy with Lester being hired. He felt the script was weak. And he was still upset about Donner being fired. So he had a little bit more input because of that.
00:38:25
Speaker
A little bit more pull. um Most of the main cast did return or had footage used from the Donner shoot. But the big story of this was Terrence Stamp coming in playing Zod.
00:38:35
Speaker
um Having two hench henchmen, Ursa and Nonn. um Zod is a Kryptonian criminal. um And Ursa and Non are characters created for this film. They debuted in the comics in 2007, so they were used later on.
00:38:53
Speaker
um General Zod debuted in Action Adventure Comics number 283 in 1961, which was a Superboy story.
00:39:01
Speaker
which was a super boy story um That's it right there. And Zod used robots that were kind of like brainy not Bizarro robots um to infiltrate Kryptonian stuff. so um So yeah, he was he was a part of it. He wasn't a big part of it, though.
00:39:18
Speaker
There were are other Kryptonians that were bigger, bigger, but this movie made Zod a star. And of course, Michael Shannon becoming Zod later on, decades later, but...
00:39:29
Speaker
um After the film was released, the comics began to adapt Terrence Stamp's look. um So Zod, after the movie came out, started looking more like Terrence Stamp with the goatee, the beard, and everything.
00:39:40
Speaker
um A lot of Donner's big budget scenes ended up being used. um They didn't want to spend more money in the budget because the budget was already low um ah because of the two-year gap in filming. A lot of nune noticeable kind of continuity differences were throughout the movie.
00:39:56
Speaker
um styling, hair, makeup, Reeve's physique. Reeve looked bulked up in the first movie, but the second one he lost a lot of weight. um Margot Kidder's hair color changed throughout the movie a bunch of times. um yeahp John Williams also...
00:40:11
Speaker
did refuse to return for this movie too he had uh he uh was originally slated to do the second movie uh he was given a screening by isla sal khan and richard lester um and when sal khan left uh production room williams and lester fell into an argument and sal khan returned and williams told him that he could not get along with this man and he and he dropped out of the second movie um The music in the second movie is terrible. Not as good. They brought in lot of orchestra.
00:40:38
Speaker
yeah um The studio always pushed the films to be campy. Donner pushed against it. Lester caved in to the executives. um And you saw scenes like this. Superman throwing this the cellophane Superman emblem. Not a part of the comics at all. This was something that was created for this movie.
00:40:56
Speaker
um And everybody laughs at that. The other thing that he created was this very last scene in the movie. Where Superman kisses Lois and wipes her memory. Not a part of the comics at all. um So, yeah.
00:41:09
Speaker
lot of tension there. um Cashing in on the hype, WB turned to advertising deals for this movie as well. You saw a lot of Coca-Cola ads. Kentucky Fried Chicken, Marlboro was all over this movie. Cigarettes, everybody was smoking them. There were ads yeah and billboards and trucks.
00:41:24
Speaker
um Movie had $54 million dollars budget made two hundred and made $216 million. Still great, great for the time. $260 million in the box office, pretty good. um And that brings us back that brings us up about two decades to 2006. Superman Returns was being filmed by bryan Singer, which we're going talk about in a little in little little while, couple months.
00:41:48
Speaker
um But WB decided that this is after more ah Marlon Brando had passed, that they got the estate's rights to use the late actor's footage from Superman that was that was lost.
00:42:01
Speaker
that Salkinds decided not to use because of the lawsuit. um And they reached out to Richard Donner after they had the rights to this footage and said, would you come in and finish your film and your vision? He said, sure, I'll come in my intended vision of the film and I will film it.
00:42:15
Speaker
So the Richard Donner cut was was was born because it came out in 2006. um The big difference of this is, number one, Marlon Brando the big the big missing link of this movie.
00:42:28
Speaker
um He was the mentor in the Fortress of Solitude Um, the intro retells Superman one, the original ending of Superman one was, um, instead of the time travel where he goes around the earth, Superman was going to knock one of the nukes into space. And the nuke was going to release the phantom zone in the beginning of the first, in the second movie.
00:42:49
Speaker
Um, the time travel happens in the second movie to erase lowest memory instead of the kiss that happened. Um, ah The Eiffel Tower, the whole entire scene from the movie, there was an Eiffel Tower scene in the Richard Lester version um completely removed. That was not part of Donner's vision. yeah um The sound effects and music was changed in the Donner cut. I think they brought in a lot of the John Williams score ah back.
00:43:14
Speaker
um Special effects were added to it as well. But staying put stayin to the 1980s standard, in other words, they didn't use too much CGI. It was more practical effects, camera tricks, film tricks and stuff to make like Jor-El coming out of the works as a hologram and stuff.
00:43:32
Speaker
um The pacing of the story, the movie was shorter by about 15 minutes. It felt better. um And Lois figures out that he's Superman in the first two minutes of the film. and That's the other thing. i notice um The other thing is the Niagara Falls scene where he's fully revealed as Superman. that They used a screen test.
00:43:50
Speaker
um I do have a picture of that here of Lois shooting him with a gun. um ah Daughter did not have a chance to film this. This is part of the 25% he didn't get to film. So they used a screen test, which he loved. And I think it it worked great the way they did it, but it showed Lois shooting Clark ah to test her theory that he was Superman. And of course, the bullet bounced off of him. but Um, and Jor-El was added back to the fortress footage, adding, uh, the biggest needed change overall to the narrative. It was great.
00:44:18
Speaker
Um, leading to the climax, uh, Jor-El uses the rest of his essence to reinstate Superman's powers. Um, instead of, instead of going back into the, uh, the, the chamber and everything that happened. But yeah, that's Jor-El. He actually has a scene with, with, uh, Christopher Reeves. This looked really cool.
00:44:34
Speaker
Um, Let me scroll a little bit here. And Mount Rushmore was replaced by the villain's faces in the Richard Lester version. In this version, the scene was replaced with the destruction of the Washington Monument.
00:44:49
Speaker
um Also, there was a scene where Superman is being thrown, when he's fighting Zod in Metropolis, he's being thrown through a building. um He's being thrown in the Donner Cut through the Statue of Liberty. They actually had a Statue of Liberty set.
00:45:00
Speaker
Superman gets thrown into it, and it looked really, really cool. I'm glad they put it back in the Donner Cut. Um, and the original time travel ending. Um, they placed it back in its original place at the end of the, at the end of the second movie.
00:45:14
Speaker
Um, repaired, repaired all this the destruction caused by Zod, put him back in the Phantom Zone. Also, Lois forgets that Clark is Superman, and everything's back to normal, normal without an awkward kiss, so...
00:45:25
Speaker
um Did a lot for the movie. Did a lot for the story arc. um And I'm not sure. I think for me, I mean, it's the better movie. Definitely story-wise. yeah And a lot i wish I wish they didn't fuck with Donner. And I wish in the 70s he could finished to his own vi vision. but Right.
00:45:42
Speaker
Overall, great. Great, great depiction of the story. And we'll get into Superman 3, 4, and Supergirl. Maybe even next week if I can watch them this weekend. Okay. um we do have We do have WrestleMania coming up, so...
00:45:56
Speaker
<unk> I'm not sure what I'm going to get into because there's two nights of WrestleMania this week. But, ah yeah, there's ah there's a big mess in the 80s after this movie came out. Yeah. and And Superman didn't come back for another 15 years. That's how bad it was. so um And we're on the road to Fantastic Four.
00:46:13
Speaker
Um, and I want to talk a little bit about it. Um, came out, first comic came out in 1961. Um, Fantastic Four, number one. Um, the comic book that was supposed to read this week, by the way, I did not finish. I only, I only had time to read the first one. We'll get into a little bit.
00:46:30
Speaker
Um, the coming of Galactus, but, um, first major release after Timely Comics became Marvel. Um, essentially making them Marvel's first family, in which everybody's heard that before, the Fantastic Four became,
00:46:42
Speaker
being called the first family of Marvel. um And the characters are kind kind of tongue-in-cheek of what their abilities are are of who they are in real life. Reed Richards stretches himself thin with doing too many things for science.
00:46:57
Speaker
So, of course, when he gets radiation, and becomes a stretchy man. Johnny has a childlike hot temper, so he ends up, when he gets powers, becomes a big firing human torch. um Sue Storm has a shy personality.
00:47:11
Speaker
So in order to hide herself from being her shyness, she becomes invisible. And Ben Grimm has a rock-hard exterior, but has a kind soul underneath. So when he gets all the rock underneath him, um he becomes the thing.
00:47:24
Speaker
And he ends up dating a blind girl named Alicia Masters. A little bit, I didn't know until I did the research of this. I should have realized it. But her adopted father, stepfather, was the Puppet Master.
00:47:37
Speaker
Alicia in the comic books did not have a last name until, I think, like, maybe a decade later. They actually gave her the last name Master because her stepfather was Puppet Master.
00:47:48
Speaker
um it was It was something that happened a decade later, but um she's blind in the in the comic books and the movies going forward. um Ends up being his girlfriend and wife later on, but... um But yeah, we'll talk about her a little bit more in a minute, but I do have a picture of what Puppet Master looks like and what Alicia looked like when her debut in the comics.
00:48:08
Speaker
um And also the big debut of this was Victor Von Doom, which I don't want to get too much into Von Doom. We're to talk about him probably a year from now, but more. but um But yeah, that was a big part of the Fantastic Four. He's the main villain and became a huge villain for Marvel.
00:48:22
Speaker
But I did watch robin Roger Corman's Fantastic Four, which is the big thing I want to talk about this week. um This came out in 1994. The big story about this movie was um it was a movie that the guy that the Roger Corman wanted to make to keep the rights of the movie.
00:48:41
Speaker
It was never... Everybody says it was never meant to be released. That's why it was so campy looking, so TV movie looking. um TV movie of the week. It was really, really bad. Everything about it was was pretty bad.
00:48:55
Speaker
um But it was the first time ah Marvel big budget movie had been made. Not a lot a lot of big stars. couple people, familiar people, but not a lot of big stars at all.
00:49:06
Speaker
um But... I do have a picture of the cast here. There's a great documentary. dude i think i can't remember what the name of of it's called, but it's a documentary about the making of this movie. It's really, really good. I recommend that.
00:49:19
Speaker
um But yeah, dom Dr. Doom was a part of it. ah Victor Von Doom. Victor was ah was a scientist that worked with Reed Richards. Ended up getting um this weird stuff going on and turned him into this Dr. Doom. We'll get into that more next year, like I said. But um There is supposed to be Mole Man in this movie. They changed him minute into another character. I don't know who he is.
00:49:41
Speaker
um Alicia Master was part of this. Ben Grimm's girlfriend. In the middle there, you see the actor who played Ben Grimm, and that's the thing there. You see the final version of the Human Torch, shows up at the end of the movie with a early CGI. um and You see the team there. You see Reed and Sue get married at the very end, and um He waves goodbye out of the top of the limo, which was the craziest, campiest looking thing I've ever seen. um it it reminded me of a bad, bad 90s, 80s TV show.
00:50:13
Speaker
Yep. um and Everybody after this movie was made, they ended up putting it in a vault. um There's like nobody's watching this movie. Ended up being leaked online when the internet first started and went crazy during these Comic Con circuits. Everybody was passing it around. So it became a viral sensation.
00:50:32
Speaker
um underground. And then when the internet became big and everything got passed around, and became a huge cult phenomenon. but um And then we got the Tim Story one, a decade later, which we'll talk about in a couple weeks. but um I did want to mention the first the first issue of Galactus, the Galactus trilogy. I did read that Um, and the coming of Galactus is a big deal.
00:50:57
Speaker
Um, it's been depicted and k in the movie. It's going to be depicted in the next movie. Um, but the first, uh, I have a couple of pictures here. Um, this is the first picture of Silver Surfer coming.
00:51:09
Speaker
Um, and you see, You see um the scene there with the sky burning. um That's a watch to the watcher makes it so Silver Surfer can't find Earth. So he he creates a fire in the sky.
00:51:23
Speaker
He also creates rocks around the Earth so the Silver Surfer can't find him. While the Silver Surfer ends up finding him that's a watch who they're trying to protect Earth. um Silver Surfer does come to Earth and calls for Galactus. The picture on the right there.

If you're watching on YouTube, that's a picture of the sphere that Galactus travels the universe. And that's him going into the Earth's atmosphere. And this is the very first time you see Galactus in the comic books. Different than what you see, um the purple that you see in Galactus nowadays. But um this is what he looked like in the very first ah ending of the first issue. I did want to bring that up. I'll probably i'll probably read the next two and talk about it a little bit next week. But um yeah, really cool.
00:52:01
Speaker

00:53:12
Speaker
Yes. um And we see Johnny Storm following the Silver Surfer into space, and we see the first glimpse of the female Silver Surfer, Charlotte Ball. A lot of people are complaining about it is definitely not as good as the Tim Story Silver Surfer.
00:53:29
Speaker
um i have no I have no care that she's female at all, but I was hoping the CGI would be a little bit better. Maybe it will be yeah in the end, but we'll have to wait and see. um We see the first time ah mr Fantastic stretches, ah doing stretchy things, and we see Galactus' foot.
00:53:48
Speaker

01:07:19
Speaker
That's the problem is you pick up a comic book and you're like, oh, I could rip through this one quick. And then you're like, I've been reading this one page of dialogue for like 10 minutes. I was surprised. That's why i didn't finish the Galactus trilogy because there was a lot of Stanley dialogue. yeah um yeah But yeah, we'll talk about all that stuff next week.
