Hey, what's going on?
00:01:25
Speaker
hey what's going on What's happening, man? are we doing? Not much. Doing good. nice nice. How's your week been? Been good. Been good. Getting through the dredge of winter, of course, this

Superman Serials of the Late 1940s

00:01:37
Speaker
time of year. Sucks.
00:01:39
Speaker
Gonna start the show off right. We are on our, i believe, second, maybe third talk of the year of Superman. And this week, we are going into the 1949-1950 era and talking about the Kirk Allen Superman serials first.
00:01:58
Speaker
um These came out in movie theaters. There was 15 of them in the first run. There was actually two sets. um And they were serialized stories. It was before television, so was basically what you would expect from a television show.
00:02:11
Speaker
But it was played each week through a movie theater. And there were only 15, 20-minute episodes, serials at the time. And the first run was 19...
00:02:24
Speaker
I believe 1949. And it was just Superman. Titled Superman. And starred Kirk Allen. That's him right there behind the logo. And it was played produced by Columbia Pictures.
00:02:36
Speaker
And I have a few other pictures from the show. This is what it looked like. A little bit of action. You Perry White. You got Lois Lane. You got Jimmy Olsen. You got Superman doing feats of strength. in And we'll get into all that in a minute.
00:02:50
Speaker
The very first time we see the character in live action. We talked about, of course, the Max Fleischer cartoons, but this is the very first time they actually put the suit in black and white in live action.
00:03:02
Speaker
um It came out in 1948. um From the success of the Batman serials, which came out in 1943, um I believe Captain Marvel around that same time too had a series.
00:03:14
Speaker
Have you ever watched the Batman ones? I have watched parts of it. Not like I've watched these. They're rough. These ones are way better. The Batman ones are rough. And so are the Captain Marvel slash Shazam ones.
00:03:26
Speaker
Well, the reason why these are so good is we done it was done by Columbia Pictures. Right. um dc student dc DC Comics, at the time National Comics, started development making a similar series based off what they did with Batman, with Superman, their two most popular characters in the comic books.
00:03:44
Speaker
um It played in front of the weekly movie theater matinees, so you'd have to go to a theater, like you do now to watch a whole movie, but you'd only see... see these 15 minute things. They did that a lot back then. It wasn't just for movies like this, but they did it for war.
00:03:59
Speaker
They had war propaganda back in the mid 40s, early 40s, where they would sell bonds to stuff but um and It was before television. so This is what we had before television became a home staple.
00:04:11
Speaker
um Kirk Allen, uncredited in this show. The only credit of Superman is Superman played by Superman, um except for the poster and the marketing. he is named on that. But Columbia's advertising claimed that they could not get an actor to fill the role, so it hired Superman himself.
00:04:29
Speaker
And he was just merely playing cart Clark Kent in the serials. I also saw the debut of Noelle Neal as Lois s Lane. She would later go on to star in Adventures of Superman with George roli Reeves after season two.
00:04:41
Speaker
um Had a lot of budget restraints. um Special effects and were equal to what you'd expect from an animated movie. Now, this is Superman flying. Obviously, a cell painted figure of Superman.
00:04:56
Speaker
There was no special effects budget. Um, explosions were like this when Krypton exploded in the first episode, it looked like a Hanna-Barbera cartoon. yeah Um, but yeah, when you see Krypton and you see a lot of the background of Metropolis, all of that is painted murals and stuff.
00:05:12
Speaker
But that's how they that's how they got away with it. Still at the time, i was just out every time I watch something old like this, I always try to put myself in that time period. What I would have thought, you think about what was what was on top what was on in movies at the time, wasn't much.
00:05:27
Speaker
yeah You had some cartoon stuff, but yeah there was not much to compare this to. i think ah I think that's why horror movies were so big back then. Yes, exactly. Because you could do... the special you could get away with more. The special effects were much easier to do on something like that.
00:05:42
Speaker
And they were kind of like events like every weekend, like a new horror movie or whatever. Exactly. And like like the Wolfman was just prosthetics and the blob, same thing. So, um yeah. Yeah, as long as you can get the emotion out of your audience, that's that's exactly what horror movies did. That's a perfect perfect example.
00:05:59
Speaker
um Superman's costume... was gray and brown when they filmed it. It was not the iconic one you saw in the comic books, the red and blue. um And because of those colors, ah it photographed better on black and white. that's where This was never colorized.
00:06:15
Speaker
um Like I mentioned earlier, the first episode was the Krypton origin story. um This is the poster. Now, these posters would show up in the movie theater each week. and There is a poster for every single episode. This is just example I had for that first episode. If you have an original poster, wonder how much that would go for.
00:06:32
Speaker
probably that's Probably thousands of dollars. This is some dope art right here. I kind of want to get that put up for my noir This is great noir-style Superman art. And, and of course, it has a little picture of what goes on in the episode. That's Ma and Pa Kent finding Superman after the spaceship landed. What else do want to talk about? Pa Kent to Clark.
00:06:53
Speaker
A great line in this that goes forward about ten years. Because of these great powers, your speed and strength, your x-ray vision, your super sensitive hearing, you have a great responsibility.
00:07:06
Speaker
A lot of people make this note that this is an exact quote that Stan Lee may have ripped off, may have paid home home momage homeage homage to later on when created Spider-Man.
00:07:18
Speaker
But there's a lot of similarities. This is one of them. This is the one I wanted to talk about, this line in the show. um Each episode left off with a cliffhanger, hyping up next week's episode that people have to go to the theater and see.
00:07:31
Speaker
um And there are, of course, 15, like I mentioned, 15 in total for the first run. um It became a tremendous success that eventually they greenlit a sequel series. Ant-Man, or Atom Man versus Superman. And this came out in 1950, two years later.
00:07:47
Speaker
And this was the first live-action portrayal of Lex Luthor as the villain. This is the that's the poster right there for the first episode of the serial. And that is Lex Luthor in live-action for the very first time right there.
00:08:01
Speaker
Looks like the original Superman cover when Superman was kind of a bad guy when they first created him. there's a giant It literally looks just like that. Yep. Yeah, this is, i mean, for what it is, it's campy for now. I mean, we've seen Superman do amazing things since then.
00:08:17
Speaker
But for the time you put yourself as a kid in this era, this would be astounding to You would go to the movie theater every single week to want to see how this story ends. And the way they play out, it's just like it's just like a TV series, just like the Batman. Have you ever seen the original Adam West Batman series?
00:08:33
Speaker
Every episode ended with a cliffhanger that would make you sit on the edge of your seat to wait to see what's going to happen in the next episode. And you have the same you know tune in next week, same bad time, same bad channel to promote it.
00:08:45
Speaker
So fast forward one year or or, yeah, fast forward to one year. 1951.
00:08:51
Speaker
And they want to make another movie, not a serial. They want to actually make the first full live action full movie. And so they bring, i don't think Kirk Allen wanted to do it. So they brought in another actor. They looked around forever.
00:09:07
Speaker
And they took an actor that was in Gone with the Wind, had a supporting role named George Reeves. And he did not want to do the role at first because he knew he was going to get typecast because of Kirk Allen. He talked to Kirk kirk Allen about it. he's, you know, this character is so big. It's bigger than I am. If I'm this character, he had the knowledge of that way back in the 50s.
00:09:27
Speaker
I'm going to be this character forever. Eventually, he would subside to that way of thinking because when he found out kids loved the character so much and looked up to him, he would do appearances.
00:09:39
Speaker
when the wind he further i mean Later on, he would become the George Reeves Superman later on in the series. um But 1951, they did cast him in a movie, Superman vs. the Mole Man.
00:09:50
Speaker
And this is the poster for that movie. This was a this is like a 57, 58-minute movie. um yeah And this came out um in the movie theater. And it was it was basically just a pilot, filmed as a pilot for what they would eventually be, the TV series, The Adventures of Superman, that would debut a year later.
00:10:09
Speaker
um This would become a two-part episode in that series later on. um Casting George Reeves. I already mentioned. um He fell in love with the character. um Filmed in 12 days.
00:10:22
Speaker
You could tell. Not as good as serials, I gotta say. I actually like the serials more than this movie. um And I remember, we talked about it off-pod, but I remember this came out as a special feature on the Superman box set that came out.
00:10:34
Speaker
um And it was one of those one of those special features that came out for that. Yeah, it's on the first Superman, I believe. Superman 78. And if you buy it digitally, it comes with that also. Yep. So this is this is a ah this is a great pilot for what the TV show is going to be, and we're going to talk about that in a couple weeks, but I did want to mention that this was around that same time.
00:10:54
Speaker
This was a feature-length movie at the time, and did did wonders for his career, and he went on to play this until 1959, and we'll talk all about that, too, at the end of the show. Mm-hmm.
00:11:07
Speaker
um The big review that we have this week, and Kevin's been wanting me to read this for a while, it's it's up there is one of the best Superman comics, All-Star Superman.

Superman in Comics: All-Star Superman

00:11:17
Speaker
um It came out in 2005, 2008.
00:11:21
Speaker
twelve at Twelve comic books make up this ah the series. yeah um And Superman living through his own mortality. What steps would he take if he knew he had limited time on Earth? What would he do?
00:11:34
Speaker
um twelve He had 12 feats of, i can't remember what they call it in the comic book. what What do they call it? 12 feats of strength or 12 feats of um something like that that he had to go through. yeah um But it was created by a Grant Morrison, Frank Quietly, Quitly, I don't know how to say his name.
00:11:50
Speaker
I think it's Quitly. And it's all about Superman going to the sun and getting too much solar energy. power from the sun, overpowering, overcharging himself to the point where his skin is going to explode from the inside out um and mean like on the molecular level. And now he knows that this is going to eventually kill him.
00:12:11
Speaker
And he's on a task to do a lot of things, and and ah including giving and making a serum to make super lowest a superwoman for 24 hours.
00:12:22
Speaker
Um, we see in that picture on the right there, we see Jimmy Olsen as doomsday, which is a weird, there's some, there's some very, very weird stories. Comic is kind of out there. Um, but it makes it fun. It makes it fun.
00:12:34
Speaker
um This, of course, the reason we're bringing this up is a lot of inspiration for James Gunn's Superman. um That's one of the reasons. um We also have him playing with Crypto, playing fetch. He throws a whole tree into the into the ah into the into space, and quick Crypto goes to catch it.
00:12:50
Speaker
ah We see this group of Superman from other times, from like... thousands of years in the future. um And one of them is from the fifth dimension who's in the same time period as Mr. McSixiplex. He's another version of Superman.
00:13:04
Speaker
um We see a bizarro. This is the weirdest one. The whole entire comic book run, the bizarro world, when it's hard to follow. Because everything is written in opposite. That was a hard one to listen to. Imagine being dyslexic and trying to read that.
00:13:21
Speaker
Actually, it might be normal for you. and And there's these Kryptonian astronauts that end up leaving Krypton before it explodes. um They end up going to Earth as Superman's final part of his life.
00:13:32
Speaker
um and they And they run amok on Earth. And use their Kryptonian technology on Metropolis and this and that. Um, and we got Solaris, who is rumored to be one of the villains, or the main villain of super of the new Superman movie.
00:13:47
Speaker
Um, he is the, he is a sun kind of monster that comes from the sun, um, and Superman has to destroy him. Um, we get Clark Kent working at the, at the Daily Planet writing an article, Superman Dead.
00:14:00
Speaker
um and we get the final picture of him going into the sun, um, We think dying, but we're we're not really sure. They kind of leave it wide open. Like, man, did he die? Could he be ambiguous on the sun? Yeah, yeah we don't know.
00:14:13
Speaker
um There was an animated movie. I saw this probably a decade ago. Yeah, I probably should have watched that this week. I didn't watch it either, but I didn't want to bring it out. This came out in 2011, just shy of three or four years after the comic book run came out.
00:14:27
Speaker
um And I remembered a lot of the comic book reading reading it that when I watched it. So it's it's very, very much on par with what happened. um Lex Luthor ends up getting superpowers at the end. Spoiler. And They have a big, huge fight battle at the end, but, um, great comic book, great run. I'd love to see parts.
00:14:45
Speaker
I'd love to see parts of this in the Superman movie, but I do not want to see some of the weird shit. There's a lot. I don't want to see, I don't want to see Jimmy Olsen doomsday at some point. right I don't want to see that ever. But yeah, one thing I didn't know is, um, I sent you a picture of it when I noticed it when I was flipping through, when I first got it is, um,
00:15:00
Speaker
Because everyone's been complaining about or some people have been complaining about the baggy suit. But assuming this is not skin tight, there's like creases all around it and parts of the book. oh So I guess that's where I got the the yeah inspiration for the suit doing that.
00:15:12
Speaker
And also the trunks in this are much bigger than normal, which is also similar to they're similar to what David Cornswit's wearing. Yep, they're not tight. um yeah Yeah, the suit's very more... the The reason why it's baggy just makes it look real.
00:15:27
Speaker
I mean, they've done they did it with Spider-Man, Amazing Spider-Man. um they did it with ah with They did it with Batman in the past, too. so um Yeah, great comic book. We'll talk about the future of this segment next month.
00:15:38
Speaker
ah We do have some great stuff coming up. We'll talk about that in a little bit. um But we did get into another comic book thing. I got into it late, of course, but I'm going to get into another set of notes.
00:15:50
Speaker
I got into half a Daredevil Season 3 on Netflix. Only about seven years late. The best season? ah Very, very good. And the villain this season is Bullseye, and we get the origin story of Bullseye. We're getting it. um only i only made it halfway through. a Six episodes. finish it this weekend, because Bored Again comes out on Wednesday, I believe. We'll talk about that. ah Tuesday night. We'll talk about ah my concerns going into when Disney purchased it after you finish...
00:16:19
Speaker
the show because i didn't know where they were going to go and I had a lot of concerns and I heard they were picking it back up. Yeah, we'll talk about that next week. Okay, sounds good.

Daredevil Season 3 Recap and Excitement

00:16:28
Speaker
Yeah, because there were reviews so the reviews have been stellar for this show. They basically say it's it's like the second Earth. They say it's better than like season two, and I like season two.
00:16:37
Speaker
I love season two. Mainly for the Punisher stuff, everything in the middle sucks. But like the first three or four episodes of Punisher in season two was awesome. And then like he comes back in like episode nine has that giant fight at the prison.
00:16:50
Speaker
yeah But yeah. um But I did want to mention a few things I noticed. ah Foggy Nelson's mother is the same person who plays the Penguin's mother.
00:17:01
Speaker
ah In the DC in the d c series. um Dex, this character named Dexpoint Dexter, his bullseye is going end up being bullseye. um he He kind of going through like a weird PTSD type of type of thing um throughout his whole entire life. He's very, very much off of off the rails.
00:17:23
Speaker
um And we're in episode six. We've already seen the Daredevil versus Daredevil fight where he's dressed up as Daredevil fighting him. um That was really cool. Oh, yeah, that was that was awesome. I remember that. yeah I haven't seen this in seven years or whatever it's been. so There was also a clip that came out today from from of Bullseye fighting Daredevil that looked really, really cool of Born Again.
00:17:43
Speaker
So this is getting me pumped up for the new series for the new series coming out. um I'm hoping that they continue it. I think the action on on this show is by far some of the best of the Marvel series.
00:17:54
Speaker
I think, just let you know, I believe it comes out at 9pm on Tuesday. Excellent. So you don't wait until midnight or 3am. It should be on there at 9pm on Tuesday. two Two episodes, I believe, too.
00:18:08
Speaker
Yes. And a lot of people today have watched the whole entire thing. They leaked it Yeah, they sent the entire thing to reviewers. Yeah, that's cool. So yeah we'll talk about that next week. I'll talk about the rest of the season then, and we'll talk about the new new couple episode premiere.
00:18:23
Speaker
um Also, the other thing that we brought up last week, we're going get into Bond. And this week, we're going to talk about a movie, and we're going to talk about ah a documentary. ah First things I want to talk about, when we talked about MGM Studios, we forgot to mention the amount that Bezos paid for the creative control.

James Bond Franchise and Bezos' Buy

00:18:40
Speaker
He paid a billion dollars On top of what he paid for the paid for the property in the first place, he felt he paid a billion dollars for full creative control of James Bond in the franchise.
00:18:52
Speaker
um That's an astounding number for full 100% creative control, and I have a feeling it's because that's the whole reason he bought MGM Studios. Like I said last week,
00:19:03
Speaker
was to have full control. What else does MGM have? Like, what does MGM have? Like, they're known for... ah Classic movies. Was there Yeah, they're classic movies, but like, Vox is like the current thing they could use.
00:19:14
Speaker
Yeah. Um, also the other thing that came out this week, we didn't talk about last week is Christopher. We've talked it often on, but Christopher Nolan wanted to write to direct the bond movie, um, after tenant, but was told he couldn't have final edit.
00:19:26
Speaker
So he went on to make Oppenheimer. And of course, one i think I think things could be different with Jeff Bezos involved. The broccoli family was so protective of the franchise that they extended a lot of things from casting throughout the years to pretty much everything. Um,
00:19:44
Speaker
not allowing an American director or whatever yet. So I assume that maybe after he's done with ah this movie, hopefully Bezos gives him a call, hopefully. yeah we'll get into that in a minute.
00:19:56
Speaker
um Goldfinger. 1964, third movie of the series. There's a great line when he throws a toaster in a bathtub. Shocking. Positively shocking.
00:20:07
Speaker
um This movie, you had Oddjob, who was spoofed in our Austin power awesome Powers. um And the big the big line from this movie when he's talking to Goldfinger He is on the conveyor belt. He's about to be killed, James Bond.
00:20:26
Speaker
And he asked Goldfinger, do you expect me to talk? And Goldfinger's like, no, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die. That is a popular line from all the, probably the one of the most popular lines from all the Bond movies.
00:20:39
Speaker
I'd say, um yeah, it's it's up there. um Pussy Galore. Big character. Everybody knows that. um They're in Kentucky. it Was this the first time they went to America? I believe it was. I believe so. Yeah. ah So we see Felix for the first time.
00:20:53
Speaker
um We see a KFC, which is KFC. It's got to be one of the first ones. yeah And the setting at the end of this movie is all in Fort Knox, and they're trying to get the gold.
00:21:03
Speaker
um Very cool movie. Very cool character. fun one. I mean, it's James Bond. It's fucking your cool as hell. I can't wait to get into my Roger Moore ones because I love Roger Moore. I think I love Roger Moore. I like the Roger Moore movies more because they're they're just campy fun. and they you just get His movies are so ridiculous at points, but they're just fun.
00:21:24
Speaker
So I love the Roger Moore ones. The Connery ones are hit or miss for me. um Some of them are okay and then some I love, but this is one of the better ones. ah So this got us into ah documentary you've been wanting me to watch for a while. I finally did. Everything or Nothing. This came out in 2012.
00:21:40
Speaker
Talked a lot about Anne Fleming creating the character. Brought up in my memory, of course, ah the movie they came out last year, The Ministry of Ungenial Warfare, which he was a character in that movie.
00:21:51
Speaker
um A lot of the stuff that he learned when he was in the Army and the Armed Forces in in Britain, um He brought in for private private spy stuff into his book series, and of course that went into the movies.
00:22:03
Speaker
um Cubby Broccoli, Harry Saltzman came in as producers and they were in the original run of this from but the very beginning. And like you've mentioned so many times, the creative control that they had, what they did with the character, it's just, at the time, nobody else had done something like that for any other...
00:22:22
Speaker
project. Yeah, it's like watching Superman 78 and being... That was like the first time something like that was done on that scale and what they did, you know, 15 years before that, similar. Right. They talked a little bit about the Casino Royale, the first movie, and what's not part of the broccolis.
00:22:38
Speaker
Yeah, that was one of those cereals or whatever, right? It was weird. Yeah, it was comedy. And I think it was a comedy... it Casino Royale, the serial, no, that was different. They remade it as a comedy movie.
00:22:52
Speaker
The first serial is when they renamed him. Instead of James Bond, they want they cast an American actor and called him Jimmy Bond. Right, that's what it was, yeah. that pissed everyone off. Yeah, they did talk about that. um But it talked a lot about Kevin McClory.
00:23:06
Speaker
And he had an original deal with Anne Fleming, right, to create Thunderball. They came up the whole story of Thunderball. they were going to make a movie about it.
00:23:17
Speaker
Over lots of drinks. Yeah, that fell through. didn't who came up with what. So the Broccolies ended up doing their version of Plunderball, and there was a big lawsuit involved.
00:23:27
Speaker
Kind of got lost in that a little bit, but it took a lot out of Ann Fleming. He ended up dying and during the middle of the whole fiasco that was going on. I mean, um popping pills and drinking a bottle of whiskey tonight probably didn't help his cause. No, probably not. And two packs of cigarettes a day.
00:23:44
Speaker
And we talked about it on the podcast. There ended up being a remake of Thunderball that came out when Sean Connery was all done with the Broccoli's Bond. He had a falling out with them. um The last movie was Diamonds of Forever, right? Was that his last movie?
00:23:56
Speaker
Plus, I believe it was time. But he came back after George Lazenby, which we'll talk about in a minute. Oh, my God. um But, of course, and after Sean Connery leaves, after the after the fourth movie, I think. I can't remember the timeline of this. Fourth.
00:24:14
Speaker
and They bring in another actor. They take the risk of casting George Lazenby, who I had no idea was not a known actor. Yeah. Had no credentials up until that point. I watching this.
00:24:25
Speaker
I watched this immediately after we went off last night, I last week. And I texted you during it. I'm like, you want to watch the George Lazenby? Because like, because like, I'm like, you're going to want to watch George Lazenby documentary.
00:24:35
Speaker
Because it's an entire hour and a half of him talking like this. And he is fantastic. Fantastic. yeah Not only are we going to watch that documentary, but we're going to watch the movie too. I love that movie. It was my favorite Bond movie when I watched I remember that.
00:24:51
Speaker
It's been involved by all of the Connery ones. I love that movie. It had a lot of heart to it, surprisingly. um But yeah, Kevin McClory thing ended up happening after the George Lazenby thing.

Thunderball Legal Issues

00:25:04
Speaker
Connery came back for the Broccoli's one more time, and after that, he was done with the Broccoli's. Had a big, hal huge falling out, and like a decade later, Kevin McClory signed him up to do a remake of Thunderball, which I can't remember with and do you remember what the name of that was.
00:25:18
Speaker
I have everything or nothing stuck in my hair right now. It's um Never Say Never, guess. ah yeah um yeah But the funny thing is, when they brought... back connery they gave him the biggest salary ever for for a movie star which was like one million dollars the first million dollar actor which is kind of insane that that was the biggest up to that point but then again it was the 60s still so And the movie was was panned pretty badly. And you still have not seen it, right? Correct? You haven't seen it? we'll watch Correct. I'm watching it the rewatch. yeah Yeah, we'll watch that during a rewatch too. so I'm interested to see how they play Thunderball after the Broccolis had already done it. Because Thunderball was that was with with Roger Moore. So it would be interesting to see how Connery's take on that is.
00:26:02
Speaker
and how the story plays through. But yeah, it's great documentary. um Learned a lot about the Broccolis and how they had control. learning Learned a lot about broad Barbara Broccoli. I had no idea she was that young. I thought she was a little older than that, but it makes sense.
00:26:14
Speaker
she She was a kid. she was like She was very young when she took... when she ended up Her father basically gave her control after the 89 film, I believe, because he got into bad health.
00:26:26
Speaker
So she was probably like in her early 30s, maybe, when she took over the franchise, I'm guessing. Right, right. So yeah, a very good documentary. I i suggest anybody who who has who has a love for Bond.
00:26:39
Speaker
Talked a little bit about the newer Bond, didn't get into the older stuff. This came out in 2012, so it didn't tackle all the stuff for the later Craig. The casting of Craig is pretty much where it ends. yeah Where did you watch this? Did you watch it on Tubi?
00:26:51
Speaker
i know I actually bought this on iTunes a while ago. I had no idea. I looked on there. I had it already. Oh, really? yeah You probably bought it when you were watching all the movies. Possibly, yeah. It may have been on sale. That's probably what happened. Yeah. So I did have it, so i watched it on iTunes. Nice. Yeah, very good.
00:27:05
Speaker
um And this weekend on the Oscars, and we'll talk about that next week, but the weekend of the oux Oscars, we're going have a James Bond music tribute on the show honoring all the lifetime longtime producers and the that's been on the show. I can't wait for the Oscars.
00:27:17
Speaker
Yeah, sounds good. The last couple years I've been on the road, so I'll be able to watch them. yeah Yeah, that being said, let's get into the news.
00:27:31
Speaker
And it's not a new something, let's try around it.
00:27:35
Speaker
I got a brand new trailer for Andor. Finally got new look at Andor. Season 2 coming out in April. April 22nd on Disney+. It has a weird release strategy. They're doing three episodes at a time. um April 22nd, 29th, 6th, May 6th, and May 13th. So over fourteen or four weeks. every Every week is one year.
00:27:56
Speaker
Yeah, that's cool. yeah so And yeah, there's 12 episodes total, so that's pretty damn cool too. um Also, finally an announcement trailer for Shrek 5. five um and they did And they did officially announce that Zendaya is going to be playing Shrek and Fiona's daughter.
00:28:11
Speaker
um This is probably a perfect time for you to catch up at least on the first two movies. so The first one's great. but Yeah. um Last weekend, Captain America... um Crumbled, as they say, with $68 million in the box office. to Started off $100 million the week before. Ended up only making $28.3 million last weekend.
00:28:31
Speaker
The Monkey made $14.2 million, which I do want to see. And Paddington Peru did third place for $6.5 million. um rob liefeld going at the throat of kevin feige uh getting get kevin feige off the mound he spent after the failure in the box office underperforming last weekend um yeah like i said i mean this was the last movie that was put into production when shapek was involved um so that might have had something do with it and they also waited like five years after the tv show to do it this movie should have came out like two years ago
00:29:05
Speaker
it was the last it was a great finale from what I hear for the show, and I still have not seen it. so i' Still have yet to go to the theater and see it. Which wild because you saw Madame Web. Did I see that in the theater?
00:29:17
Speaker
Yeah, we saw that together. Oh, we did. Yeah, you made me go. That's not something I would choose to go on my own, Kevin. And the Marvels. You almost skipped it. The only thing you wanted to do the Marvels. I did go see. did go see the Marvels.
00:29:28
Speaker
Yeah, the post-credit was cool. It's one of the better ones. um Rest in peace to Roberta Flack. um Did the original Kill Me Softly. Of course, the Fugees did that later on, but ah Rest in peace to her. Lots of death to talk about

Gene Hackman's Death Investigation

00:29:40
Speaker
this week.
00:29:40
Speaker
Rest in peace to Lynn Marie Stewart. um If you're a fan of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, she played Charlie's mom. If you're a fan in the 80s of Pee-wee's Playhouse, she played Miss Yvonne.
00:29:53
Speaker
She has a quite a quite a spectrum of acting in her resume, but she was 78 years old. She died of bleep cancer this week. She was in The Groundlings. um Rest in peace way too young to Michelle Trachtenberg.
00:30:06
Speaker
Um, I remember her mostly from the, from the Nickelodeon stuff, Harriet the Spy, but I remember her. For me it Eurotrip. Uh, yeah, Eurotrip. Uh, I remember her from Adventures of Pete and Pete more than anything else. yeah She was, she was in that show. She was, and I guess it was, uh, they're saying a liver transplant?
00:30:24
Speaker
Is what she had a liver transplant? The rejected the liver or something? Yeah, like a month before. She was only 39 years old and, and she was going through some complications and the speculation is that, uh, she had some sort of a liver failure, but yeah um It's shocking fucking news. not the shocking Not that shocking you expected it to happen, but the way it happened.
00:30:43
Speaker
um More news came up about ah to came out about it today, but Gene Hackman passed away. um And his wife and his dog came out today that they were dead for 10 days before they were found in their New Mexico home.
00:30:56
Speaker
um Okay, so he has two or three kids. Who doesn't check in on their elderly parents? Right, yeah. like The kids themselves are probably close to 80. like yeah He was 95, so we knew his death was coming. They probably had a lot of obituaries already planned for him.
00:31:13
Speaker
His wife was only 63 years old. um The fire department has... because i figured maybe it was carbon monoxide. the carbon they they they thought yeah They said it's not that. um So they're not sure what's going on. It sounds like she was found with like there were pills in the house. a lot people were speculating that she found them and then killed herself or whatever. But like why the dog?
00:31:36
Speaker
I want to know about the dog. Maybe the dog died of starvation from not eating for 10 days. Could be. Or there's some sort of poison in the house, which is possible. Even though even though carbon monoxide wasn't found, there's going to be something going on there.
00:31:48
Speaker
um They're doing an investigation. They're full full on investigation. So high profile, I guess they have to. But so many movies, um so many movies I have not seen with him that I need to watch.
00:31:59
Speaker
The French Connection, classic. Unforgiven, classic. was going say, have you seen Unforgiven? No, he's two the most popular movies. watched last night for the first time because he died and I was like, you know what, I think it's a good time to watch Unforgiven.
00:32:10
Speaker
And that movie was fucking fantastic. ah There's a movie that came out, The Replacements, with Keanu Reeves. Kind of a shitty, classy, clock cheesy movie. I loved it. Um, just watched Hoosiers, Hoosiers, not too long ago. You did. Um, great in that movie.
00:32:26
Speaker
But for me, Gene Hackman will always be my Lex fucking Luther. Um, what he did, we're going to talk about it all in a couple of weeks because we're going to get into, by the end of the month, we're going to get into Superman in 78. But, um, what he did for Richard Donner's Superman to bring Lex Luther to life the way he did was incredible.
00:32:45
Speaker
And a lot of actors since then have taken what he's done, and and even not only actors, but comic book writers have taken what he's done and brought it onto screen and page, which is just a remarkable performance with him and Warren Beatty and Miss Tess Mocker, all of that, the whole entire run. And working alongside Christopher Reeves during that run was incredible.
00:33:08
Speaker
Um, also was in young Frankenstein. Trying to look at all the pictures here to see if I don't miss anything. Um, my favorite, ah want me to bring up my favorite from what I remember? Exactly. Yeah. all I'll always, always, always think of enemy of the state when I think of Gene Hackman.
00:33:23
Speaker
Yeah. Um, that movie was, I love that movie. That was from real Smith was kind of like peaking a little bit and early in his career. Um, but I love that movie. I used to watch that movie all the time.
00:33:34
Speaker
I've got to watch The French Connection. That is yeah that is on the top of my... I can't believe you haven't seen that. Yeah, that and Unforgiven. We can do Unforgiven this week if you want. Yeah, we could do that. It's good idea. um Yeah, it was... they not Not sure what's going on with that whole whole investigation, but I'm sure there'll be more stuff coming mail in the weeks to come.
00:33:53
Speaker
um Colin Farrell is becoming one of the most awarded comic book actors in history. Um, he's already got the Critics' Choice, he's got the Golden Globe, SAG, Saturn Award, all for the Penguin performance. We already knew he was going win all the awards. That's no surprise.
00:34:08
Speaker
Um, speaking of awards, Jessica Gunning won for Best Actress in Baby Reindeer, limited series at the SAG Awards. Um, but the awards show that everybody cares about this time of year, the big awards, it's it's everyone everyone's, uh,
00:34:27
Speaker
Everybody's glamoring for one. Well, not no, not really. It's the Razzies. This always comes out the weekend or a couple days before the Academy Awards. This is the Worst Picture nominations of the year.
00:34:38
Speaker
And the the an announced winners came out or winners, quote unquote, came out today. um And Francis Ford Coppola won for Best Director, had a live Instagram video.
00:34:50
Speaker
That movie trash. You never watched that, right? You never watched it, right? Yeah, of course I did. We talked about it on the pod. Okay, I can remember it was the first time I watched it. Yeah, Megalopolis. It was horrible. Yeah, it's trash. yeah Horrible movie.
00:35:01
Speaker
um he He has a lot of hit and miss movies. I mean, he has a lot of classics, too, that are going to go down as the best movies of all time with the Godfather and and um Apocalypse nowlu Now. Apocalypse Now, yep. Yeah, but Madam Web, he won for Worst worst Picture. That weren' one for Worst Picture.
00:35:16
Speaker
um Jerry Seinfeld won one for Unfrosted for Worst Actor. Yeah, that movie fucking sucked. Dakota Johnson, rightfully so, won for Madame Webb as Worst Actress.
00:35:28
Speaker
One of the funniest categories this year, supporting actor John Voight lost or won for Megalopolis, Reagan, Shadowland, and Strangers. He won. um Supporting actress um Amy Schumer in Frosted. I didn't see that movie. That's how bad I thought it was.
00:35:43
Speaker
um I think Ariana DeBois should have lost for Kraven the Hunter because but that was also ADR problem. I won't blame her on that. Worst prequel remake ripoff Joker fully adieu. I agree.
00:35:55
Speaker
Although Craven's right up there. um And Rebel Moon. Oh, The Crow too. that's a really That's a really tight category. I'm surprised Joker won. yeah um Screenplay at Madam Web won. And for a Redeemer award, Pamela Anderson for The Last Showgirl, which we haven't talked about on the podcast, it's her. Dave Bautista. I heard some great things about it.
00:36:16
Speaker
um I think you just came out digitally or something. don't know. Probably. Everybody's saying she did a great job in that movie, but um yeah so we get the oscars we'll talk all about that next week um talk about the worst this week we'll talk about the best next week and see what what ends up going up on top um hopefully it's not that fucking amelia perez movie that everybody's talking about oh my god yeah i have no interest in that at all doing a lot of oscar talk and i have no interest in that winning any award except for i wouldn't mind seeing zoe saldano win um I do like her, but she hasn't actually would have won before.
00:36:46
Speaker
That might be the one they give um to that movie with all the controversy that's came out, um because it has nothing to do with her. So I could see her winning, and she's won a bunch of awards for it so far. What's the other thing I was going to bring up about that?
00:37:01
Speaker
Oh, I heard the song. One of the songs from that musical. It's about chopping your dick off. Have you heard this? Have you heard this song? No. probably Probably haven't even. it probably hasn't and For some reason, it's in my circle. i't know why it's not in yours. what's this What's this movie on? Is this on Hulu?
00:37:18
Speaker
It's on Netflix. It's on Netflix. Oh, Netflix. I'm popping this bad boy on tonight. I was thinking of that too. Maybe, maybe I should watch it for next week and get a reaction to it, but I don't know if I can, I don't know if I want to waste my time. I'd rather watch Daredevil, but, um, exactly.
00:37:32
Speaker
The boys, uh, final season. We already have, uh, what's his name? Well, what the fuck's his name? Um, Jason Eccles. He's already in the boys. He plays, um, yes. Soldier boy.
00:37:44
Speaker
Um, Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins, who are in, um, Supernatural with him, have joined the cast of the boys for the final season. So yeah, um, they announced that this week.
00:37:55
Speaker
Um, also joining the cast of Lord of the Rings Rings of Power. um first of all i think i have a picture yeah we got we got them uh we got um jamie campbell bauer and eddie mars and i've seen him before on the right but i don't i don't know what i've seen him in um jamie bauer he was in harry potter he was just in the last season of stranger things he played the bad guy um but they're gonna be in in roles uh i believe jamie bauer's gonna playing a significant role in Lord of the Rings and the other guys can be playing a recurring role but very excited for seeing what happens with the season three of that
00:38:32
Speaker
Speaking of casting, Oscar Nunez, who is in the office as Oscar, is coming back in the Peacock ah Office series. Whatever whatever it's going to be called. The paper or whatever. But Oscar's coming back.
00:38:44
Speaker
um Speaking of casting, Sharon Stone was announced as part of Euphoria Season 3. Interesting. It's that quote, I'm honored to be euphoric. so um interesting casting choice um haven't seen much of her in recent years after catwoman so interesting to see that um brand new movie coming out i believe we saw a little quick trailer for netflix for april 25th called havoc um gareth evans uh starring tom hardy i believe i have a poster for that as well um yeah a lot a lot of action lots of thriller action so yeah
00:39:19
Speaker
Speaking of Tom Hardy, um the Guy Ritchie Mobland series starring him, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren coming out in March on april on Paramount Plus coming out March 30th. It's going to be a series.
00:39:31
Speaker
um Announced for casting this week, Kristen Ritter for Dexter's Resurrection, which is coming out this summer. we're very excited. She's going to be playing a character called Mia LaPierre. pierre Renowned sommelier with a dark secret. She's called the Lady lady Vengeance, notorious serial killer.
00:39:53
Speaker
There's going be a lot of... I wonder if the cops are going to use Dexter to handle the lecture of the situation to try to catch her. I wonder if that's how it's going to happen. And then he ends up catching her somehow on his own. Maybe he breaks out. don't know. I have no idea what the show could be about, but I'm looking forward to Yeah, expected I expected when we saw Dexter's original sin, expected I expected Dexter to break out of the hospital by the end of the series. I mean, when he was interviewed about it, they were like, so how does Dexter survive? And his only answer was, well, it's pretty cold in that snow.
00:40:27
Speaker
Right, yeah. So. Yeah, we do know he survived, though. um Doctor Who got new posters for Doctor Who coming out on April 12th, new episodes. um The rumors of this new series of Doctor Who is that um there was there is backlash for the first season with this guy playing Doctor Who.
00:40:47
Speaker
And the rumor is BBC may be taking a break with Doctor Who like they did back in the 90s. I'm not sure. They're kind of denying it, but it depends. It depends on how bad it really is. I was going to say, it probably depends on how well this show does now. Yep.
00:41:05
Speaker
the second season of it with this guy. So we'll see. We'll see. Um, Timothy Dalton, um, weighing in on what's going on with the MGM takeover of, uh, the W W, uh, double of seven franchise.
00:41:17
Speaker
Um, he was very, very surprised and shocked. Barbara is Barbara broccoli is, I think a fit fabulous woman and a wonderful producer as was, as was cubby. Um, uh,
00:41:28
Speaker
So yeah, hes he's kind of talking like, oh yeah, I'm surprised and shocked like everybody else. so um Aola Adabari, whatever name is, from the bear, is going to be doing a movie on Barney. A24 movie produced by Daniel Kaluuya, of all people. um This is Mattel's new movie after after Barbie. They wanted to do something. so um The Minecraft movie. A couple of new TV trailers came out this week. Got some new posters as well.
00:41:58
Speaker
um Also got some new stuff out in the wild, including new popcorn buckets from Regal, Jack Black's Dandy in a supermarket, which which would scare the fuck out of me if I was walking around the corner and saw that.
00:42:08
Speaker
But yeah, um I liked Minecraft, the game, I'm kind of excited to see it. um I think last week I may have talked about it on the podcast, don't remember. Ozzy Osbourne's doing this big, huge concert um in the UK with a whole bunch of heavy metal acts, kind of like a farewell.
00:42:26
Speaker
Well, they're also going to be doing a documentary on all of his health issues in this final Black Sabbath performance. It's going to be a Paramount Plus documentary, and he wants to say a proper proper goodbye to all of his fans, so...
00:42:37
Speaker
Um, I'd love to see Ozzy. I love Black Sabbath. I love some of his solo stuff. I'd love to see a full-on documentary of him taking it seriously about his career. cause I love shit like that. So, very excited to see that.
00:42:48
Speaker
Not only that, but there's a Led Zeppelin documentary. I'm hoping it comes out streaming because I really want to see that. Um...
00:42:56
Speaker
<unk> ah Judith Hogue, who was the first, I want to say Lois Lane, wow, the first April O'Neil in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the the live action movie.
00:43:08
Speaker
um The writer of The Last Ronin, which is going to be a new live action movie, wants to bring her back and be involved in the movie adaptation of The Last Ronin. wants her to come back to play ah April O'Neil in that series.
00:43:20
Speaker
I know you just bought the comic. Have you been reading it? Are you holding off on it? No, I was doing Superman this week and I got other stuff ahead of that, but I was pretty much waiting until maybe we get some news or more news or when it goes into production or something. Yeah, there's no casting or anything.
00:43:38
Speaker
um Speaking of stuff in the 80s, this wasn't something in our lexicon, but I didn't want to bring it up. Master of the Universe started filming and we got the first picture of the Sword of Power, this guy playing He-Man. Nice. I just had the action figures.
00:43:54
Speaker
yeah I did too, but I never watched it. I might have had like a a couple of the cartoons on a tape or something, but I don't really remember much about it. yeah yeah um I think that there was an 80s live action movie, I think, right?
00:44:07
Speaker
Did they have Dolph Lundgren or something? Yeah, I think I watched that back in the day, but wasn't really a big fan. New pictures of The Rock. I think we mentioned couple times in this MMA fighter Mark Kure movie called The Smashing Machine. New pictures of him behind the scenes looking weird with a full head of hair.
00:44:27
Speaker
Yeah, he couldn't do that for fucking Black Adam. He couldn't get a little hair in Black Adam. Now of sudden, because everyone's saying Batiste the better actor, he's trying to get fucking Oscars. I'm looking forward to this movie, though. I can't wait. Working for Scorsese now. He's working for Scorsese, and of course this is, um what's his name, Safdie brother there.
00:44:46
Speaker
So he's working with much better filmmakers than he had been beforehand. yep I guess some other new pictures from the Odyssey Christopher Nolan film currently filming that some behind scenes of of old old stuff so looks cool um Beekeeper 2 announced was today or yesterday they're to production of a new movie ah sometime this fall yeah um John Lithgow confirmed his casting as Dumbledore um he was taught he's been promoting what's he promoting some Broadway show or something I think yeah
00:45:18
Speaker
um Yeah, he's been promoting something. and say He'll be 87 years old when they're in the final season. But he did say yes to it, and he's very excited, and it'll be the last chapter of his life. He might be promoting Conclave, because that's up for some awards, and I believe he was in it. That's what it is.
00:45:34
Speaker
That movie kind of made me zone out at points. Yep, that's exactly what it was. We've got new posters for the Warfare movie with the three main cast members I wanted to bring up. um Joseph Quinn, yeah James Gandolfini's son, I can't remember his name, Michael Gandolfini, and of course Will Poulter.
00:45:50
Speaker
um I cannot wait for this. I loved Civil War as the same director. um Maitland Ward. Have you heard the podcast Pod Meets World this week with Maitland Ward finally coming on the show?
00:46:02
Speaker
you hear that big blow the head? No, I did not. She's the one that's on Twitter doing and doing porn still to this day. she was She was on Boy Meets World. She joined the fifth or sixth season in the college year.
00:46:18
Speaker
Yeah, five. As a roommate to Eric and Sean's brother. I can't remember his name. But ah yeah, she went on the show and they had a big, huge fall knockdown drag out fight with Daniel Fishel.
00:46:30
Speaker
pretty much talking Pretty much talking about how Danielle was a bully to her. Was it live on the show? No, it was a podcast. It was recorded. That's what I mean. Was it live on the podcast? Oh, yeah. Okay, okay. You can go back and listen to it. I'm very far behind.
00:46:45
Speaker
Me too. What season are they in? Season 5 or 6. Yeah, they're talking about her now, so yeah. Okay. I stopped after season 2, but check that out. There are clips on Twitter if you want to bypass the whole podcast.
00:46:57
Speaker
um There are clips of the big huge knockdown Drago fight they had. Very, very cringeworthy talk conversation because she's like... why didn't you Why did you not stop talking to me? Why are you why were you always mean to me on set? It's so crazy stuff.
00:47:13
Speaker
um Mike Flanagan's The Dark Tower series. on um Mike Flanagan is going to be... Oh, Stephen King's going writing for it. Sorry, I read this wrong. so syria Stephen King himself is coming in to write the series.
00:47:26
Speaker
um I know the movie that came out, a lot of people did not like it. I know it's one of Stephen King's most popular things that he's done. Supposed to some sort of like epic. Isn't there like seven books in the series or something? It's a whole big just graphic novel set, I believe. The first one sucked from what I've heard.
00:47:42
Speaker
And it's connected to a lot of his universe too. i know there's an episode where he goes into the It universe in Derry. So yeah, it's kind of cool. Hooters, reportedly going to be filing for bankruptcy. there's your I can see why with the wings I had three weeks ago. Those things were trash.
00:47:59
Speaker
The wings in Saugus were not good. The bonus ones actually aren't that bad if you get the right sauce. um It's really hit or miss, though, with their actual wings. It was weird. They were breaded.
00:48:12
Speaker
What I heard this week, there are two Hooters. There's Hooters of America. That's the one that's going under bankruptcy. The Hooters in Florida, which is located in Tampa, that's where they came from, yeah that is not going to be touched. And that's the original recipe. that's Everything's going to be the same there. And that's what I remember. When I went to Florida, I went to the original one. Fucking amazing.
00:48:31
Speaker
The best one I ever went to. um The one in Saugus is a national brand. They changed the recipe. I don't know what the fuck they've done, but they're just not as good as they were when we went right back in the day to go to wrestling. Yeah, and we used to go to the one in Boston. It was great every time we went. Right next to the Fleet Center. Yeah, right next to the Fleet Center.
00:48:48
Speaker
um Skype. Rest in peace. Skype is shutting down um for obvious reasons. We've got Zoom now. you got other ways of communication. FaceTime. Yeah. FaceTime. Everything easier. StreamYard.
00:49:00
Speaker
StreamYard, which we do. um But yeah it's to be shutting down on May 5th. i think Microsoft's going completely zoom the Zoom route or or Teams route or whatever they do.
00:49:11
Speaker
um Got a new poster for Novocaine. I cannot wait for this movie. I love Jack Quaid. Everything I see him in, I love him even more. like no was When we watched Companion last week Oh my god.
00:49:23
Speaker
Yeah, it just made me love his range of what he does for character acting. um This is about a guy who cannot feel pain. He's almost like a superhero.
00:49:34
Speaker
And it's a very John Wick type type style movie where he has to fight people and and he's getting stabbed and shot and he cannot feel the pain of it. So um this comes out on... don't know when it comes out. There's no date here, but...
00:49:47
Speaker
We will talk about it when I find out more information about it. There's been some trailers out there on YouTube if you want to look. um Got some first looks of Rian Johnson's Poker Face yeah Season 2. Of course, Natasha and the Owen stars in that.
00:50:01
Speaker
um Guest starring John Mulaney, Cynthia Erivo. David Kromselt, Katie Holmes, john Justin Theroux, Awkwafina, gross. Melanie Linsky, John Cho, Giancarlo Esposito comes out this spring on Peacock. I can't wait. do believe I had pictures of that. love the first season.
00:50:19
Speaker
yeah I know you You've talked highly about that. I love Cynthia Erivo, so i'm kind of interested to see that. um Monthly games for March. Yes. Finally being able to play Turtles.
00:50:32
Speaker
yeahp i Actually, i Ninja Turtles Cowabunga, I do have it on disc, but um the Cowabunga collection has every single classic Ninja Turtles game. um yeah The ones we played on the and n NES back in the day and everything. i will be too i will be playing the shit out of that probably.
00:50:47
Speaker
yep ah That's going be the free games for next month. I want to bring that up. Also want to bring up that Vince McMahon is shopping around another wrestling company.
00:50:59
Speaker
After he was kicked out of the WWF. Rumors to be in talks with Fox for a new wrestling company to be airing. yeah He should hook up with Teddy Hart and Teddy can finally get that wrestling company he was always talking about with the raising ring ropes and the ladders and the Zelda-based prizes or whatever the fuck he was talking about.
00:51:19
Speaker
This is not the first time we've talked about it. This is the first time Eric Bischoff and Conrad talked about it their podcast. But yeah, wow. It'd be interesting to see if this this actually takes ah takes flight. It won't.
00:51:31
Speaker
Vince McMahon's fucking 80 years old. He should just lay low. Retire. needs plenty of money. Retire. Just live on a beach somewhere for the rest of his life and be done with it. I don't think he can. Maybe he's bored. Maybe he's bored. I don't know. I honestly don't think he can with listening to how Pritchard talks about him and his work ethic. Work ethic, yeah. I can i can see that.
00:51:51
Speaker
um Got one piece of swag I want to bring up, but it's kind of cool. Swag! stuff we all get. Come on, son. You know that's right. You got the Hot Toys Red Hulk 1.6 scale figure. it Looks really, really cool with the likeness of Harrison Ford.
00:52:08
Speaker
um Yeah, I have not seen the movie, but the figure looks cool. So, yeah. um Now let's get into the Warner Brothers news of the week, and there is a lot of news. um Warner Brothers game is, ah the games are pulling the plug on the Wonder Woman game.
00:52:24
Speaker
um It's been in development for our three years, they say. um They got rid of a bunch of studios, Warner Brothers games San Diego, Player First games, Monolith games, ah productions, but Wonder Woman was the big title that was cut in they're not gonna be making that movie i remember the trailer came out um big hype over which i don't think they ever even made any gameplay footage like i never even got that far with everything because everyone apparently everyone left the company and started a new company with ea so they were trying to do this game while rebuild monolith right and um it just that's not going to work out very well
00:52:58
Speaker
ah Colin Farrell talking about the Penguin. He's conflicted on doing this another season of the Penguin just because of where it left off. Of course, as' you be doing the second movie too of the Batman. so um I know that James Gunn has been talking about the Penguin season 2 a lot.
00:53:15
Speaker
um If your star does not want to do it, it kind of conflicts what you're saying. So, yeah, we'll have to wait and see on that. um kind of Got a picture of, on Lex Luthor's birthday, we got a picture of Nicholas Holt as Lex Luthor behind the scenes filming Superman.
00:53:32
Speaker
ah James Gunn posted that this week. It looked really cool. um And now let's get into some of the casting news this week. Some of the weird news, some of the strange stuff that happened in D.C. um We talked about Sergeant Rock, I believe, last week.
00:53:46
Speaker
um and how Jeremy Allen White was a contender. Well, also, um Mike Feist, who was in Challengers, correct? That's the movie i'm thinking of. the Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's been ah also one of the stars considered for the Sergeant Rock movie. He's the guy, when I saw Challengers, he's the guy that I wanted to play the Flash for.
00:54:06
Speaker
Yep. Yeah, he'd be good in that, too. He'd good Barry Allen. But the big news in DC as far as casting and as far as first look was finally seeing Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Jon Stewart and Hal Jordan in the Lantern show, which just started filming this week. And we also got a look at the first look at the Green Lantern ring.
00:54:26
Speaker
Like cos couch and Kyle Chandler's figure. Which is different than the ring from the Superman trailer. So I wonder if he's in the Green Lantern Honor otter Guard, which have different rings. And the rings do conform to the person.
00:54:40
Speaker
And that looks like ah it looks like an older ring because he's an older guy. It does look older, yeah. You're right. Yeah, we'll have to wait and see. I'm wondering what happens. I've heard a lot of stories of them coming to Earth because the Green Lantern died and they have to investigate it. I think it's going to be the death of Alan Scott.
00:54:54
Speaker
um That would make sense. So we'll have to wait and see. Yep. Yeah, we'll have to wait and see on that. um But, yeah. We've also looked at I believe he put it out today of Superman filming and in his foot his foot in sand.
00:55:10
Speaker
His feet in the sand. um Snow. Yeah, we're getting closer to a second trailer. We're going to talk about that in a minute. um But DC Studios, a whole bunch of stuff came out. This press event last Friday finally did leak on Monday.
00:55:23
Speaker
um and Peter Safran started off the conference talking about the DC brand was being defined by different creative teams at the company and each was pursuing their own distinct vision vision of the characters, the stories, and it left very little room to collaborate or crossover. um and That's kind of where they got the idea of bringing everything and having this IP as one.
00:55:46
Speaker
um And that's that's what we have now with James Gunn and him coming up this way of making TV shows, movies, animation, games, everything all in one, comic books, all kind of one complete story going forward.
00:55:58
Speaker
Um, the DC release plans going forward to live action features. Uh, I believe two animated features. I think that's changed. Maybe two animated series. One of those has changed.
00:56:10
Speaker
Um, one anime, uh, two live action series is going to be what they're going do every single year. The output, um, down um Peacemaker Season 2.
00:56:22
Speaker
um Still set for August. The Waller spinoff not in the work it is in works, um but it's been tough to get right. um Also, speaking of that, John Economos had an anniversary this week. He posted a picture forgot to put in the notes. Which is weird because...
00:56:39
Speaker
The cover date of Suicide Squad number one, which is allegedly his first appearance, is covered in in may But you check other websites and it says he was created and February.
00:56:49
Speaker
So, very confusing about that. have no idea. Talked about Batman. ah Saying his Batman in the DCU um is not going to be Robert Pattinson. They're going to be casting their own version.
00:57:04
Speaker
um They love him, but they're going reintroduce their own version of a Batman in the DCU. um Speaking of Batman, um Batman 2's script is not done, um but they've been reading encouraging things from the script and from from from Matt Reeves.
00:57:20
Speaker
um It's very imperative to the DCU introducing Batman. ah Batman Brave and Bold has a writer attached. Andy Muschietti may direct. um So they're kind of backing off on that.
00:57:31
Speaker
um And there will be a Batman movie of some sort releasing October of 2027. He also said that Brave and Bold will be announced very soon. More information on that. And yeah.
00:57:43
Speaker
So we'll have to wait see. um James Gunn also says, Everybody knows I love Batman and it's important to me. And I'm working very closely with the writer of brett Batman and Brave and Bold. ah Speaking of Batman Clayface, we know that movie is coming out.
00:57:56
Speaker
Big rumors on casting this week. he He did say that Daniel Radcliffe is not part of the online rumors. saying that he's going to be casting, he's he's having anything to talk to him, having considered him.
00:58:08
Speaker
Jeff Snyder went on a full-blown meltdown over James Gunn debunking this, and it was quite possibly one of the funniest things I've seen all week. If I get the link, I'll send it to you. It's fucking, oh yeah, oh ah clayface Clayface is going to be filming this summer.
00:58:24
Speaker
It's going body horror film, and it's going to be classic ah Batman villain. um it's another title that we added to the slate on the strength of the exceptional screenplay by mike flanagan um so um'm i'm glad they're writing first and then going into the uh the movie after it's really cool um so yeah they're gonna shoot that this summer slated for 2026 um lanterns uh started shooting this week or last week uh i just want to make sure there's nothing in here want talk about um it's very cool because it's connected to superman because we got guy garner uh we got these green lanterns over here so there's a lot of stuff overly connected basically is what they're saying everything's gonna be connected um and now it's two new animated series series uh one is is a a continuation of uh my adventures of superman uh they're gonna be in my adventures with green lantern um they're also doing a starfire um it's gonna be an animated series as well uh don't know much about starfire do you know much about her
00:59:19
Speaker
I don't. um i don't either. I think she was big in, like, was it Teen Titans or one of those things? I think she was big in, like, one of those or maybe some of the animated stuff, but I really don't know much about her at all. but this is My Adventures with Green Lantern sounds like it's going a lot of fun, and hopefully we get, like, ah My Adventures with Flash at some point.
00:59:36
Speaker
Yeah, the series My Adventures with Green Lantern is going to follow Jessica Cruz, who has life uplifted when a Green Lantern power ring falls from the sky. So, yeah, that's kind of cool. There's another show. It's going to be like a kid's show where they're going to bring Lightning Flash, Plastic Man, Aqua Girl, Green Lantern, and Terra.
00:59:55
Speaker
into this school for heroes called Superpowers. um And it's going to more of a kid kid-friendly show. There are also going to be crypto shorts. New short films, four in total, seasonally themed, seasonally released.
01:00:08
Speaker
um It's going to have the same crypto from the movies. So that's kind of cool. Yeah, that should be fun. Talked a lot about Swamp Thing. um They are... Yeah, what's his name who wrote it?
01:00:21
Speaker
Did The Complete Unknown. Mangold. Yep. yeah Um, so whenever he comes back and wants to do Swamp Thing, uh, they'll do it when he's ready. Um, yeah, but they, they're really excited what they saw. sense that, it makes sense that he said that Swamp Thing is not integral to the larger story.
01:00:34
Speaker
Cause I never expected that to begin with. Like I expected that when it was announced to just be like shoving down swirls or whatever. So, um, very cool. ah Probably the biggest tragedy of the whole thing was the authority.
01:00:46
Speaker
um It's been the one that's is hardest to get done, shifting the overall story. um It's kind of hard to do with the world of the boys, is what they're saying. um But there it's on the back burner for now. That's one of the casualties of the of the announcement they made a few years or a year ago now, a year and a half ago.
01:01:02
Speaker
So, yeah. Um, Paradise Lost Booster Gold is still very much in development. Uh, also talked about the Zack Snyder pick last week that we talked about briefly, kind of. Um, um, I was talking, I was just talking to Zack as a friend and we were just hanging out and was like, let's take a picture together. They knew exactly what it was going to do, what exactly it was going to on the internet.
01:01:22
Speaker
um They thought it was funny, so they released it and just laughed. So that's kind of cool. um James Cunt also confirmed the titan Teen Titans film is in the works, um and they're developing the script currently. The the writer of Supergirl, Woman Tomorrow.
01:01:35
Speaker
um Justice League, we all know where we're where we're headed to a larger story. um James makes sure that we're building that where those building blocks are going to be put in place. um So eventually what they're saying is there's going to be a big event film that everything is leading up to in six or seven years is what they're saying.
01:01:52
Speaker
They about a six or seven years, so Avengers Endgame style event is what kind of what everybody got the the gist from what he was saying. um And he's also, James Gunn, after he wrote Superman while he's currently doing post-production, he's working on a secret mystery DCU project that he has not announced, has not, nothing's come out on this.
01:02:11
Speaker
um and don't even know what the character's about or nothing, but he is writing it currently. I'm guessing, um if he's working with the person on the Batman script, I'm guessing it's a World's Finest movie, to be honest.
01:02:22
Speaker
Okay. I wouldn't be surprised. That's just a guess for me. Or it's something just completely out there that we have no idea about, but he seems excited. Let's be honest. There's two tentpoles to DC.
01:02:33
Speaker
Superman and Batman. If you're in charge of how this DC universe is going to work, you want to be in control of both of those characters. I would not be surprised if he's writing the next Batman script of whatever he's going to be in. You're right. I think he'll be, yeah I think he's helping to co-write the actual Batman Brave and the Bold script.
01:02:49
Speaker
And I think he's going to be doing, I think he'll handle the world's finest movie. um But we'll see going forward. Yeah, we'll see. um They have no plans to attend San Diego commi Comic-Con at this time.
01:03:00
Speaker
but they are going to be at CinemaCon in April. um they're gonna be a big I think we talked about they're going to have a big, huge rollout for Superman. i kind of We kind of speculated that. um The second second Superman trailer is currently being prepared. I'm guessing we're going to get it right around that time. i said right before summer blockbuster season.
01:03:17
Speaker
ah So that's the DC news of the week. Got a little bit of news, a little bit of stuff off the back burner. um Overwhelming, a lot of people on the internet, because there's just not a lot of new information. There's some new information, but there's a lot of cancellations.
01:03:31
Speaker
They're kind of saying, well, they are they doing they know what they're really doing. I think they do. I just think ah you're starting a whole new universe. Everything kind is on the back of how Superman works, too. Yeah. I mean, Marvel shifted things a lot too, because I believe Ant-Man was supposed to one of their phase one projects with the original director and stuff. Yeah, it was. But I think they're doing things the right way as far as people are yelling about no Wonder Woman and no Flash. One, they're probably to disassemble themselves from those characters.
01:03:57
Speaker
And two, they're not going to announce something unless they're working on something. like His initial rollout was just projects he wanted to get made, basically. And they ended up making most of them so far. So we'll see on the rest, but...
01:04:10
Speaker
Yeah, I'll have to wait on that. um Lizzie Kaplan, was going to be in the the Channing Tatum Gambit movie, um says the movie that was nearly made was going to be a 1930s romantic comedy style vibe.
01:04:24
Speaker
I'm not sure what I would have thought about that. um But yeah, he did a great job when he played Gambit in Deadpool Wolverine, so I'm glad we at least saw it. i don't know if we'll see it again, but i'm glad we saw it.
01:04:36
Speaker
um The Russo brothers confirmed that the next Avengers movies will now shoot back-to-back um There are going lot of radical surprises in those movies. um They're promoting their new movie with Chris Pratt that comes out on Netflix in a couple weeks. um So, yeah, they're out doing promotion for that.
01:04:52
Speaker
um It's going to be all filmed in London, blah, blah, blah. um uh he's talking about who knows is going to show up i don't know ah they're still writing the script so yeah we'll have to we'll have to wait and see on that talk about it um speaking of marvel spider-man 4 moved one week back to july 31st of 2026 um that's to give space to um the christopher nolan epic because i think it's going to probably do gangbusters that month um came out today casting for daredevil born again season two matthew matthew lillard
01:05:25
Speaker
um gonna be part of the cast they just started filming i believe today so uh yeah um and uh kingpin in the series makes a reference to in the new series series season one makes reference to a kid dressed as a spider in the second episode of daredevil born again they cannot use spider-man because of sony unfortunately in live action ah because they own the rights to live action spider-man no they don't own the rights to animated spider-man which is weird that's why they ended up coming out with friendly neighborhood but um yeah there's going reference to a spider walk of crawling around in Hell's Kitchen and in in Bronx in Brooklyn and stuff. so that's kind of cool
01:06:01
Speaker
um It also announced this week a Punisher special ah presentation is in the works at Marvel Studios. Jon Bernthal will return. It's going to be more like the... <unk>s He's co-writing it, is what they say. It's going to be more like the hour-long Guardians of the Galaxy special we got, and the other one we got, the the Werewolf by Night. It's going to be more on that level, but it's to a continuation. He's going to, of course, be in Daredevil, born again Season 1 as well. so ah can I cannot wait for that.
01:06:29
Speaker
um There are plans for Moon Knight to return in the MCU, but he will not be in so there will not be a Season 2 of Moon Knight. Brad Winterbaum, who does all the tv for marvel has been on talking about daredevil born again he's been doing a lot of promotion they're asking him a lot about tv shows that were out in the past and moon knight was one of them they said there won't be a season two the character there are plans for him being in the mcu later um talked about charlie cox um charlie cox says because he's also on the uh with him and d'onofrio are all all on uh
01:07:02
Speaker
on promotion right now for Daredevil. um says He says he'd rather see the Daredevil join the Avengers than return to another Defenders in the MCU for the sake of the character.
01:07:13
Speaker
um Be a wonderful moment. So much history of the character. That's what everybody wants to see right now.

Marvel's Series Strategy and X-Men Integration

01:07:19
Speaker
Brad Winterbaum also talking about Nova. The series was cancelled, but the material ah just wasn't right.
01:07:27
Speaker
They want to make sure it can go on for multiple seasons. That's kind of what they're planning on doing in Marvel right now. Um, talking about X-Men 97 Season 2 and Season 3, um, coming together amazingly, and the scripts for Season 3 are insane.
01:07:39
Speaker
Um, we'll see, because I liked how Season 1 turned out, but i'm wondering if it was the creator that did that the reason was for that, or if it was the... Just the story overall. I don't know. We'll wait see because they fired the guy that was showrunning it. Speaking of that, um ah speaking the X-Men, the focus on the X-Men right now currently is having them and join live action in the MCU.
01:08:05
Speaker
And I think we're going see more of that when Secret Wars comes out. um And casting, fan casting for this, and she's actually talked about it. um Hunter Schaefer from Euphoria talked about she'd be open to playing Mystique in the X-Men film. I think we talked about it not too long ago. um She said that would be cool. So I think that would be a great casting for that.

Star Wars Episode 3 Anniversary

01:08:22
Speaker
um We are at the 20th anniversary of Episode 3, Revenge of the Sith from Star Wars. That's crazy. That's insane. Yeah. At that time, I thought, well, nothing could be better. i think movies are dead at this point. I was a young, naive kid.
01:08:37
Speaker
um Here we are 20 years later, and there's so much has come out since then. but um Written directed by George Lucas. The poster looks really cool. um yeah it it was it's Out of the trilogy, it's my favorite. I mean, of course. It's what we it's what we expected from from Star Wars. We sort of expected to see the the exact turn that happened. so It was no surprises, but um And finally in news, this is nuts.
01:09:03
Speaker
This Kathleen Kennedy news, the original rumor came out this week that she's leaving. Oh my god, it's awful. which is Which has happened a bunch of times. Rumors that she's been talking behind the scenes of coming up with a plan to leave Disney and set somebody else to oversee Star Wars, but...
01:09:18
Speaker
um She ended up talking about it. The rumor was refuted by CNN later, and then she ended up going in a full article on Deadline, um talking about aspects of Star Wars and maybe making an announcement months or years down the line of of of a...
01:09:34
Speaker
of leaving, but for now, she's so focused on making the movies. Um, she says she'll never retire from movies, but what's happening at Lucasfilm may be different, is kind of what she's saying.
01:09:46
Speaker
Um, she was produc producing several upcoming Star Wars projects, and starting with Disney about succession plans, um, will stay at Lucasfilm to assist whoever takes over.

Future of Star Wars Projects

01:09:56
Speaker
Um, we'll break this down a little bit here, but, um,
01:10:01
Speaker
They're talking about the Simon Kinberg coming in to write and produce the next Star Wars trilogy. um And that's going to be the future of the series going forward. It's the next part of the of the saga is what she's saying.
01:10:11
Speaker
The next trilogy. Um, and that's going to be continuing whatever Ray's story, I believe, and all that. Mm-hmm. Um, talking about Sean Levy's, Sean Levy's, uh, movie as well.
01:10:22
Speaker
Um, a standalone Star Wars story. Takes place nine, maybe five or, um, post, uh, episode nine, maybe five or six years out. Um, and, uh, yeah, not much more about that.
01:10:33
Speaker
Um, also talking about, um, didn't die of that already. Um, The prequel with James Mangold still happening, but it's kind of like the same thing with Complete Unknown. He's still busy doing that, doing other projects.
01:10:45
Speaker
um Talked about Taika Waititi still writing his story. They loved the first treatment of it, um but he's busy as well. um So it's hard to get him down for to do anything.
01:10:57
Speaker
um And the final two questions of the article. Will you step out at Lucasfilm Boss this year? um but She says, we really don't know at this stage. There's so much going on. I don't know. um And then he asks, when it happens, who will make that decision? And she says, it's my decision. This is 100% my decision.
01:11:12
Speaker
So she's standing foot. She's staying there. Not a lot of new information. um i think they're trying to play coy with it. Just let Mandalorian movie release. um They got the Rey movie, of course.
01:11:25
Speaker
um But yeah, i don't expect half the shit that gets announced to ever come out for star Wars. Well, I mean, she's already announced nine things that have not come out. Nine things have been canceled, so we'll see. The Rogue One movie?
01:11:38
Speaker
Rogue Squadron movie? that was supposed to That was supposed to come out? And then they announced it was canceled, and announced she could be coming back, Patty Jenkins. So we're not sure where Star Wars is. It's and it's a kind of in flux right now.
01:11:51
Speaker
Which sucks because we talked about it off pod. It's an IP that had so much to it. Like so much to it. And now it's weakened. um and And it wasn't just the sequel series that did it. It's a lot of the TV show stuff that did it. It's just oversaturation of Star Wars.
01:12:09
Speaker
And some of it not good Star Wars. and That was the problem. um So, yeah, that's it for the show this week.

March Releases and Recommendations

01:12:15
Speaker
ah Next week, ah show and tell. ah The Celtics documentary comes out on Monday, I believe, on Max.
01:12:21
Speaker
Yes, it starts. Daredevil premieres on Tuesday night. um Next Friday, Mickey 17 comes out. I'm going to try to watch Reacher this weekend after I finish Daredevil.
01:12:33
Speaker
I also want to watch the Apple TV movie, The Gorge. want to get into Severance. I have a two-month trial of Apple TV. I'd like to get into that before it expires. so um Then we get into the month of March, next month.
01:12:48
Speaker
On March 10th, American Manhunt, Asala bin Laden comes out on Netflix. um On March 12th, Dark Side of the Cage, the finale of the War Machine, Christy Mack episode. i cannot wait for that. um On the 14th on Netflix, the Electric State movie. This is the one with the Russos and Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt. That's the movie on Netflix.
01:13:08
Speaker
um That's also the weekend that Novocaine with Jack Quaid comes out in the theaters. um A week later on the 21st, Snow White, the live action remake comes out. Alto Nights, the mob drama with Robert De Niro.
01:13:20
Speaker
ah comes out that week. um And 25th, Dark Side of the Ring Season 6 debuts. On the 26th, the studio on Apple TV with Seth Rogen debuts. It's a series.
01:13:32
Speaker
um And the 31st to April 3rd, CinemaCon happens. So we'll be getting some Superman news and some other movie news that week, too. um For the month of next week, month of March. The month of next week.
01:13:45
Speaker
I'm tired. For the year of Superman next next month, um we're going to talk about the Adventures of Superman, in the series. i'm gonna look on IMDb, see the best rated episodes, maybe watch four of them. um But the big thing is talking about Hollywoodland, the movie with without don with um Ben Affleck, where he played George Reeves, and the mystery mystery to his death and all that. We're going to talk about that.
01:14:06
Speaker
And then we're going to end the month off with Superman 1978. we're getting closer to July. also we're getting closer to july We have to start getting into the Fantastic Four at least once a month. um So we're going to start off next week, next week, next month, sometime. We're going to intro the characters and we're also going to watch Roger Corman's Fantastic Four. I've been excited. I've been sitting on this for a couple of years now since I've had it. That's the YouTube one, right?
01:14:31
Speaker
Yep, that's on YouTube. It came out in 1994. was canceled. It was supposed to be a big, huge release. I think I've started this movie like four times. I've never gotten very far in it.
01:14:42
Speaker
um but now i have a reason to i guess yeah but yeah there's just this is only made so they could keep the characters right like yeah that's exactly they never but never intended to release it and nobody knew until it was done filming that that was going to happen probably should go back and watch that documentary about the making of this movie too yeah um also i had some comic book uh suggestions for next month um first one when we talk about fantastic four i think we should talk about the trilogy the One of the best trilogies in Marvel is the Galactus trilogy. It was 48, 49, 50. It came out in 1964, I believe, the coming of Galactus.
