00:01:35
Speaker
We have, we are cat sitting a rambunctious little kitten who keeps jumping on hamburger's butt. Yeah. What's good for the goose.
00:01:46
Speaker
I get him And we have with us a very special guest. You might know her as a friend online. You might know her as one of the Discord dogs, even.
00:02:01
Speaker
It's Gloria Yip. Gloria, how are you? I'm very well. How are you? um Man, I'm doing good. You know what? You know what? I've decided just right now, just in this moment, tonight I'm going to be doing good.
00:02:15
Speaker
Yeah. God damn it. That's what's happening. Yes. Yes. and And I'll say that ah one of the reasons why I'm in such a good mood is that you brought us such a delightful movie this week.
Gloria's Cinematic Background
00:02:29
Speaker
You brought us Future Cops. Now, listeners, if you haven't seen the feature-length film Future Cops, ah here's just a short description ah to hold in your mind as we go throughout the episode.
00:02:50
Speaker
An international gang of rascals from 50 years in the future travel back in time to the present to murder a judge while he's in high school.
00:03:03
Speaker
And they're pursued by a trio of future cops. And also, everyone is a character from Street Fighter 2.
00:03:12
Speaker
Yeah, I was waiting for that last part. Yeah, that's a very important detail. It's extremely important. This is an unlicensed adaptation of Street Fighter 2.
00:03:23
Speaker
Gloria, tell me about how you came across this movie. Tell me how you feel about it. ah So I, my family is from Hong Kong. Okay. and Growing up, we watched a lot of Hong Kong movies of varying quality.
00:03:39
Speaker
um And if you watch films, you probably know that like Hong Kong in the nineties was like a huge, just a huge industry, just churning out films. um And yeah, this was one of the, this was one of the many films that questionably my parents let us
Film Research and Inspirations
00:03:57
Speaker
watch. okay Because in 1993, I think I was eight.
00:04:03
Speaker
Wow. I feel like eight is probably the perfect age. Probably those wait it is the perfect age. Yeah. For this one, it hit exactly right. No, I could see this latching on to a child's imagination 100%. yeah.
00:04:20
Speaker
I had not seen this one before. I had not, I had heard of city Hunter, the film that I, my research will lead me to believe inspired this to some extent that was also directed by the same guy.
00:04:33
Speaker
Wong Jing. but my Yes. I'm not, I'm not transposing those guys. So it is both Wong Jing and Jing Wong. And I really, I tripped up all over myself trying not to fuck everything up.
00:04:44
Speaker
yeah Yeah, it's kind of tricky because um obviously in Chinese names, the last name typically goes first and then then depending on how people translate it. Okay. You might come across it in a couple different ways, but Wong-Ju is right. Yeah.
00:04:59
Speaker
Okay, cool. Anything that I screw up, listeners, I want to just apologize. i I only have so much time to learn things. i've promise I tried my best.
00:05:10
Speaker
And please correct me on anything you feel that I did wrong.
Wong Jing's Film Career
00:05:13
Speaker
That's important. um But ah yeah, I did watch for my research. I watched ah City Hunter, which was a lot of fun. It was a Jackie Chan movie and had a very similar vibe, but obviously without the strangeness of having everyone be characters from Street Fighter 2.
00:05:35
Speaker
but it was just a real fun like live action saturday morning cartoon of a movie you could definitely tell that it was adapted from like a comedy manga and it uh and i also watched god of gamblers which was very different from what i expected yeah it's a pretty different that's a different vibe uh that it kind of starts with yeah attic and then it it segues into a whole different whole different story The reason why I chose this one was this is one of the few that I had heard of before.
00:06:05
Speaker
And so, uh, and, but I had just like heard the title and saw the poster and it was Chow Yun-Fat looking like the coolest dude you'd ever seen in your life. And you're like, God, he's going to be the God of gamblers. He's just going to, is going to the coolest gambling movie I've ever seen in my life.
00:06:21
Speaker
And you put it on and that's how it starts. And then 20 minutes, he falls down a hill and hits his head on a rock and gets brain damage. And spends the next hour of the movie acting like an amnesiac eight year old who's pretty or naturally good at gambling.
00:06:36
Speaker
Wow. It's a really fun film, but it was that was really surprising. Yeah. ah Yeah. um And it kicked off a whole franchise of sequels in like varying degrees of connectedness to the first one.
Unlicensed Adaptation of Street Fighter 2
00:06:55
Speaker
I mean, i i could see you really the ah the the second lead in the God of Gamblers was Andy Lau, who was also just a very charming presence. He's he played Vega in this.
00:07:06
Speaker
And ah anyway, I'm getting really lost in the sauce. We need to talk. Anna, Greg, what are your histories with future cops? Anything? ah No, I had not seen it before.
00:07:19
Speaker
I did, however, watch my boyfriend and his friends play Street Fighter 2 with great pleasure. this is not a thing where like, oh, they wouldn't let me play. it was a thing where I didn't really want to play, but but i really enjoyed, I still enjoy watching people play video games.
00:07:38
Speaker
A wonderful quality and a wife.
00:07:43
Speaker
And and and i And that was honestly kind of helpful. I feel like i remembered some of those characters. They're all really, really wonderfully distinct characters. Oh, yeah. You know? Yeah, really iconic.
00:07:59
Speaker
Yep. What about you, Greg? No, no experience with this movie. I'd never really even heard of it. ah Good to know that it's not like a licensed adaptation. It's like it's weird that they would do this with this. Now that makes a lot more sense. And generally, I don't know a lot of Hong Kong cinema. So this is pretty exciting to watch this one and get like my beak wet a little bit.
00:08:21
Speaker
That's quite that's quite an entry. Yeah. Yes. Yeah, this is it's
Impact of Street Fighter 2
00:08:27
Speaker
a high watermark, I'm sure. Yeah. ah Well, ah do you guys want to hear what I found out in terms of context for future cops?
00:08:36
Speaker
Oh, yeah. If there can be context for something like this. Yes. yeah All right. Here we go.
00:08:58
Speaker
What's going on on screen? I want to hear some details. Gossips can do all that shit. Can't imagine all the time.
00:09:22
Speaker
So future cops came out on July 15th, 1993. It was directed by a Wong Jing. I could not find any taglines, but I can tell you Wong Jing was born Wong Yat Chong on May
Experiences with Hong Kong Cinema
00:09:37
Speaker
3rd, 1955 in what was then British Hong Kong.
00:09:42
Speaker
So, uh, but he took on a stage name, which I believe is very common practice in Hong Kong cinema as I understand it. Uh, He began his career in television writing for the TV channel TVB before getting ah screenwriting gigs in film with the Shaw Brothers studio. Shaw Brothers did a lot of great, like, kung fu flicks in the Then gave his first chance direct.
00:10:09
Speaker
shah brothers gave him his first chance to direct He wrote and directed Challenge of the Gamesters, a gambling picture that takes place in the world of high stakes mahjong in Shanghai.
00:10:23
Speaker
Oh, sounds like blast. Yeah. i'm putting it on my watch list. This was an early entry in the gambling genre in Hong Kong, a genre that ah Jing Wong or Wong Jing would return to throughout his career, where he would find his greatest box office of success with 1994's The Return of the God of Gamblers.
00:10:48
Speaker
I'm going to track that one down next. Must be a high watermark in the series. Maybe the God of Gamblers doesn't like Forrest Gump through an hour of the movie. That'd be nice.
00:11:00
Speaker
Now, ah even though his first film and his most successful film were both gambling pictures, that was not the only genre that he worked in. Indeed, Wong Jing appears to have worked in just about every genre you can think of.
00:11:15
Speaker
Comedy, drama, romance, sci-fi, martial arts, erotica, combinations that will involve two
Plot of 'Future Cops'
00:11:24
Speaker
to three of these.
00:11:25
Speaker
You name it, he's probably done it. The main reason why was able to cover so much ground genre-wise is that he was beyond prolific. ah Since directing Challenge of the Gamesters,
00:11:39
Speaker
Wong Jing has gone on to direct over 120 feature films, averaging three a year. Holy cow. His busiest year, he directed nine films.
00:11:53
Speaker
Wow. That was in 1993 when he made City Hunter, Fight Back to School 3, Legend of the Liquid Sword, Last Hero in China, Holy Weapon, Future Cops, our selection today, Boys Are Easy, Perfect Exchange, and Kung Fu Cult Master.
00:12:13
Speaker
Wow. Wow. That sounds fantastic. I've seen half of those. Okay. Any highlights? Any ones would recommend? Well, obviously a Future Cops. Yes.
00:12:24
Speaker
Boys Are Easy ah stars Maggie Chung. Okay. I'm big fan of her. It's kind of like a romance comedy, like a romantic comedy.
00:12:35
Speaker
It has Richard Lynn in it, and Richard Ng is sort of like the patriarch who has three daughters who need to get married. Okay, and he played Richard in this as well? Yes. Is that the same guy?
00:12:46
Speaker
Okay. It's the same actor. He's in a lot of films. He seems really familiar to me. He seems like the kind of like working comic actor that just like pops up.
00:12:56
Speaker
Absolutely. Trying to think of an American. I would say if Fred Armisen was beloved. Yeah.
00:13:08
Speaker
Now, ah there seem to be two secrets Wong Jing's proflicacy. See how I use the word proflicacy, sweetie? It's a wild word. Thank you.
00:13:19
Speaker
ah First, ah he produces his own films, and he makes use of ah lots of assistant directors. To the extent where one might wonder how much actual directing he does, as opposed to being just sort of like a pseudo producer or like a very hands on producer, like he's probably walking that line, but gets him credited as a that's the only way I can imagine produce like you just have to do a lot of delegating would be the best way to read it, I would say.
Key Scenes and Characters
00:13:50
Speaker
the other trick is that he consistently makes crowd pleasers instead of seeking critical acclaim. Is a focus on butts in the seats, entertainment, get audiences coming back, which kept the money flowing, which allowed him to fund future productions.
00:14:09
Speaker
So in some way he, you can see him as almost a Roger Corman type. and Okay. Would that be fair to say lo based on what you know about the main, Uh, I actually don't know that much about Roger.
00:14:20
Speaker
Okay. So I'm going have to trust you on that one. To me, he gives that vibe. Um, now, uh, let's see. Not everyone was a fan of Wong Jing at the time.
00:14:35
Speaker
Uh, in 1992, an unknown assailant knocked most of his teeth out. Allegedly for running afoul of the triads. We're known to be heavily involved in the Hong Kong film industry at the time.
00:14:49
Speaker
oh Wow. Yeah. Sorry, this is this is a a tangent, but related. Did you know that the director of Tempopo was murdered by the Yakuza?
00:15:01
Speaker
Oh, no. Oh, my God. For real. Look it up. For some reason, my I keep on wanting to say, I hope he's okay.
00:15:13
Speaker
Obviously, he's not. No. Yeah, probably not. No. No. That went as bad as it could. Wow. Yeah. I guess lucky Wong Jing, he only got all his teeth k knocked out.
00:15:25
Speaker
I had no idea that he had that kind of street cred. Yeah. Yeah. And who knows? Maybe, maybe he overexerted him. Maybe that's why he cranked out nine films that next year. He's like, I got to pay these fuckers back.
00:15:38
Speaker
Maybe it was gambling debts considering the focus of some of his films. Could be, could be solid theory. Now, I wasn't able to find out really anything about the production of Future Cops in particular, but I can at least explain why it's an unlicensed adaptation of Street Fighter 2. And that's because Street Fighter 2 was huge.
00:16:03
Speaker
And obviously a guy who likes making money, making movies that make money, Wong Jing, he knew, well... Earlier that year, Wang Jing made the movie City Hunter, which featured a sequence that imagined Jackie Chan as both E. Honda and Chun-Li.
00:16:20
Speaker
Oh, wow. and Yeah. And he's fighting against a guy i think might have been Guile. And then no, no. no Guile and Dalsy were there, some other guys. And then there was one other Street Fighter character.
00:16:34
Speaker
Okay. Might have been Ken. Yes. Yes, it was. Okay. Because he was fighting against a white guy with blonde hair. Yeah. It was like a white henchman.
00:16:45
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. But the main bad guy was also white. He was like this Australian guy that I've seen in a couple of Jackie Chan movies. I always really cherish the appearance of the white extra with spoken lines in Hong Kong films because you can obviously tell they're like a dinner theater actor who just really needs the gig.
Film Analysis and Humor
00:17:06
Speaker
Yeah. They just like cast the most like white square jawed guy they could find.
00:17:12
Speaker
Yeah, I'm sure if you're like an Australian actor who isn't surviving, you can say, i can go to Hong Kong and I can pay my rent by doing under five lines and soap operas and B movies.
00:17:24
Speaker
You know, there's always ah white guy can add a little color to your movie, ironically. Now, uh, let's see. but but but but but ah Yeah. So city Hunter was a massive success and that scene in particular, it garnered a lot of buzz.
00:17:42
Speaker
So it makes sense that, uh, the trend chasing Wong Jing would try to make a sort of full street fighter two pastiche film. He's like, everybody loved that sequence. I should make a whole movie. That's just that sequence.
00:17:53
Speaker
I didn't get in trouble for the last time I did it. They can't stop me if I do it again. Now, uh, Street Fighter two was released in 1991 and already had become a global phenomenon at this point.
00:18:08
Speaker
By 1993, Street Fighter II had racked up an estimated $913 million dollars just in arcade coin drop revenue. Holy cow.
00:18:20
Speaker
It pulled in more money than Jurassic Park.
00:18:24
Speaker
uh, and largely revived the arcades for the nineties. Uh, there is, i think a lot of reasons why it was so successful. Obviously, the art I think was sort of a step above in terms of design and a lot of its contemporaries.
00:18:40
Speaker
Uh, and it was really designed to be uh, two player game, ah two player versus game, whereas opposed to like if you just had a one player game, a guy could put in a quarter and he'll be playing for 10, 20 minutes if he's really good with this, no matter how good they are, if it's head to head, someone's going have to put in a quarter every three minutes. oh It's just going to keep on pumping in.
00:19:04
Speaker
Yeah. And so your average arcade game I saw the estimate at the time, like if you bought a cabinet, you could expect it to bring in about eleven hundred dollars a week. of kids just pumping in quarters.
00:19:18
Speaker
Wow. Now I couldn't find any information on how successful future cops was when it came out. Uh, but Wong Jing, uh, you said that there were followups to this film, Gloria. I didn't see any like direct sequels that had street fighter two in them.
00:19:35
Speaker
Did these same actors come back? Um, not to spoil it, but they clearly set it up to have a sequel. Um, Yes. yeah Which, you know, it's typical, like, Wong Jing hustle.
00:19:48
Speaker
Yeah. Keep your options open. Exactly. um i don't think there was an actual sequel. Yeah. Okay. he He did other films that, like, spawned, like, several sequels, like God of Gamblers, like Fight Back to School, which has Stephen Chow in it.
00:20:05
Speaker
like Okay. but This one is a classic one-off, and we need to, I think we need to cherish it, like, Yeah. Okay. Yeah. It would be strange if he, there was another movie with Richard as a Blanca in it, which is real odd.
00:20:20
Speaker
Um, and maybe another reason why he didn't make a sequel was that in the next year, street fighter, the Jean Claude Van Damme film came out. And so it was a lot harder to sell people on an unlicensed sort of, don't want to say cheap looking, but relatively cheap looking. Not that the other one was particularly expensive looking, but if you thought Street Fighter looked cheap.
00:20:45
Speaker
So other action movies of 1993. Though in retrospect, I should have looked at other comedies because I think this is much more of a comedy than it is. Yeah, would agree. But other action movies of 1993, you got Demolition That's kind of a comedy.
00:21:01
Speaker
Yeah, I'd say they're they're of a piece. I bet if you like Demolition Man, you might like Future Cops. I would agree, because that is true.
Comparisons to Other Films
00:21:11
Speaker
The flip side of the coin for Stallone that year, Cliffhanger. Oh. And, of course, Schwarzenegger had to fire back with Last Action Hero. Huge flop for poor John McTiernan.
00:21:24
Speaker
Yeah. Check out our episode from a couple of weeks ago. If you're John McTiernan head about the 13th warrior, you got the fugitive out there. You're classic. Yeah.
00:21:37
Speaker
Judgment night. Really fun. Point of no return. Bridget Fonda. So hot in that movie off the charts.
00:21:48
Speaker
Sniper with the Tom Barringer and Billy Zane. oh like Classic. ah You also got a little movie called Jurassic Park.
00:21:59
Speaker
oh I've never heard of it. And then leading the charge for the Hong Kong invasion into Hollywood, you have John Woo's Hard Target. Oh, nice. And then just other Hong Kong action movies. You got Iron Monkey with Donnie Yen.
00:22:18
Speaker
Tai Chi Master with Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh and a Heroic Trio with Michelle Yeoh, Anita Mui and Maggie Cho.
00:22:29
Speaker
Heroic Trio is a wild one. Yeah, I saw that. That got mentioned a lot in the same breath as kind of the same kind of gonzo energy. Yeah, they're both like superhero movies more or less.
00:22:44
Speaker
Well, you guys ah want to talk about the plot of Future Cops? Oh, yes. It's a wild one. ah
00:23:10
Speaker
Plot bumper, listen to me. I'm gonna give you the plot summary. Come on, baby. Here's the synopsis.
00:23:22
Speaker
Plot bumper, plot bumper.
00:23:35
Speaker
So we open in the distant future of 2043.
00:23:39
Speaker
Listeners of 2043, leave a comment if this is what it's like now. We see m Bison from the video game Street Fighter 2 imprisoned in some sort of energy sphere pending his trial for his assorted crimes.
00:23:57
Speaker
But of course, there's a fly in the ointment. Three flies, actually. They're M. Bison's lackeys, the Future Rascals.
00:24:08
Speaker
I love that name. it's a good name. Yeah. It's pretty solid. and Now, after being chased ah by hover cycles, the Future Rascals, composed of Sagat, E. Honda, and Ken, and they are Sagat. I was never sure.
00:24:27
Speaker
So also, there's something I want to talk about here, because I don't think the actual I think M. Bison is not the name of the actual yeah general, which which because because they changed names for the game when it came to the United States. Correct.
00:24:43
Speaker
They did, but these were these were also not the names in- Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. So we're using not what they should be, but the way that they would appear in like the North American arcade cabinet.
00:24:55
Speaker
That's I, I think of them as those characters. That's fine. doesn't make any, this movie, it makes absolutely no, no, no, no. I just need to know. Eight other people who were just like that. So I just have to, I'm just saying that for a while my brain was really messed up. Cause I was
Final Thoughts and Ratings
00:25:12
Speaker
like, that's Vega. No, that's actually. And then it took me while to figure out who was actually called who yeah in the original release. But now just so I know who you are talking about.
00:25:23
Speaker
Yes. You will be using the North American video game character, for lack of a better term, nomenclature. Yes. okay I will not be using any of the characters' actual names, which were something like Toyota, Ty King, and Kent.
00:25:39
Speaker
Yes. you know Yeah, and the the Vega character, which is played by Andy Lau. In the Cantonese, they call him Metal Face. Okay.
00:25:50
Speaker
Makes sense. You know, it's pretty obvious. And then Jackie Charing's character, which is, I think, Guile. Yeah. They call Broomhead. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. yeah yeah So you don't need any Street Fighter knowledge to understand the aesthetics.
00:26:08
Speaker
but So if you came in cold and had no idea of this worldwide phenomenon, you'd be like, yeah, his head looks like a broom. That makes sense. yeah i would I would call him that if I met him. That'd be the nickname I would give him.
00:26:21
Speaker
They literally use him as a broom at one point. Yeah, it suits him. It really does. ah So the future rascals, they unite in their hidden lair to travel 50 years back in time to brainwash the young man that will eventually become the judge on M. Bison's case.
00:26:42
Speaker
It's a great plan. Yeah, I love it. Because you can't kill him, then they'll just assign a different judge. You'll be right back where you started. Right, right, right. You got to convince the guy.
00:26:53
Speaker
You got to brainwash him. Now the future cops who are Ryu Vega, who is, I remember being quite villainous in the game, is but a compelling character. And so they've had him flip flop here as they had Kent flip flop over to the villainous side.
00:27:11
Speaker
ah that You've also got Guile or Broomhead and also Dalsim. Dalsim played by everybody's, all the actors are Chinese in this. just going to throw that out there.
00:27:24
Speaker
Uh, but it's fine. I'm not accusing anybody of white faces. They didn't put on makeup either. They were just like, yeah he's just a Chinese guy, but he's like, don't seem you get the idea. Uh, so they show for a quick fight scene and then uses tons of special moves from the game.
00:27:39
Speaker
And you know, instantly that at some point you're going to see every single special move from street fighter recreated in this movie that they possibly can do. And it's such an exciting feeling. It's awesome. Yeah.
00:27:52
Speaker
I cannot wait to see them do this. Let's go. yeah yeah It's like ah the Dungeons and Dragons movie from a couple of years ago.
00:28:04
Speaker
Yes. Very similar sort of excitement to be like, yes, give me the fan service. I want it. So ah datatata the rascals then activate their time machine and flee to 1993.
00:28:20
Speaker
At this point, we are now well aware that we're going to have all these characters from Street Fighter 2. And it it struck me that they were all serving the same purpose as like characters in a Comedia dell'arte.
00:28:34
Speaker
Like we instantly were familiar enough with these characters that the plot can just progress. We don't need to spend time sitting down and being like, I'm Ryu. I trained in karate in Tokyo. We're like, no, I know that that's Ryu. He trained in karate in Tokyo and he can shoot fireballs out of his hands.
00:28:51
Speaker
And he's a incredible. It saves us so much time. And also i know that you have an interest in Chinese opera. Yeah. And it feels like this is pulling from theatrical traditions. Am I mistaken in that?
00:29:07
Speaker
ah That is a very interesting parallel that I've not thought of before. Okay. Yeah. I would definitely say like actually when we were talking, you were talking about um the fight moves that they would bring in from Street Fighter as like fan service.
00:29:26
Speaker
I realized one of the things they do kind of indulge in is that kind of martial arts tradition of declaring the style of the the move they're about to make. Yes. Like, you know, leaping tiger or flying crane. And they do this in the film.
00:29:42
Speaker
But it's all the Street Fighter moves. Yeah. And um well, I know that ah like Jackie Chan came up through the Chinese opera and he brought that style of physical comedy into his film. And it feels like, yeah, at the very least with Jackie Chung, who was like a Jackie Chan, like knockoff, I think explicitly.
00:30:06
Speaker
uh, as like part of his career at the very least that, the that he, I feel like he evolved out of that eventually, but I feel like that's where he got his start. Uh, also brings that similar style of of physical comedy and that same sort of visual language. I feel like there's a, I don't know if I had to guess, if I had to guess anyway, anyway, back at headquarters,
00:30:28
Speaker
The future cop's boss tells them that Ryu is going to stay there to keep an eye on things, in part because he's the boss's brother-in-law. Great little moment. Yeah.
Games and Adaptations Discussion
00:30:40
Speaker
The Vega, Guile, and Dalsim are all going to head back to 1993 to stop the rascals. We then cut to 1993 at the St. Yukkyung Secondary School.
00:30:53
Speaker
where we meet a lovable loser named Tai Hong, who is unlucky with girls, gets picked on by a bully with a really cool pompadour, and has yet to graduate despite being 26 years old.
00:31:07
Speaker
After getting tricked into getting his hog out for a beautiful girl that everybody calls Crab Angel as part of a prank, Tai Hong heads home feeling despondent.
00:31:20
Speaker
So I actually meant to, And then I didn't to look up the ages of the people at this school. Oh, yeah. Because I think because it's a secondary school, but it's but I think it's it's older than high school.
00:31:38
Speaker
I mean, i hope it's older than high school. ah That is something that definitely did not cross my mind when I first watched this when I was eight years old.
00:31:49
Speaker
Right, right. To 40. I'm like, wait a minute. This isn't. I don't think this correct. Correct. yeah no but But there was also like biology class where she said she's never seen a hog before.
00:32:05
Speaker
Like, I feel like that's something that's going to that's high school stuff. I feel like these are high school kids. It felt very like high school anime. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, it did. played up Yeah, yeah.
00:32:16
Speaker
Especially with their like pink on white uniforms. I thought were so. So sharp. So, yeah. Yeah, really cute. Yeah. Yeah. It was a great look.
00:32:28
Speaker
Uh, now, uh, yeah, uh, crab angel pulls his hog out. Uh, tie on heads home, feeling despondent at home. Things aren't much better.
00:32:41
Speaker
His sister, Chun Mai is a stuck up type a who he always fights with and his single mom never seems to take his side. Gal he has a good friendly relationship with named Choi-Nae stops by and that helps ah perk him up a little bit.
00:32:59
Speaker
But still, he mostly feels like a big loser.
00:33:04
Speaker
He's drinking some beers alone on his roof and he tosses a can up into the air. When it comes back down, the can is four feet tall.
00:33:14
Speaker
And this is the sort of chicken fat gag that happens a lot in this movie. Like, I'm talking a lot about the plot, but I'm not talking about anything that happens in this movie. Right. Yeah. You know, but it's kind of like if I had to summarize airplane.
00:33:28
Speaker
Yeah, I would have to be like and then, you know, that guy says Leon's getting larger and he leaps out and wiggles a guy's belly. And if I do all that, the movie really when I was watching, i was like, this is like airplane or like it's a hot shots or something. Yeah, like ah it's great.
00:33:46
Speaker
Wacky. Yes. Yeah. And just nonstop gags that aren't there to advance the plot. If you miss one, don't worry. There's another one coming along in a minute.
Wong Jing's Film Titles Game
00:33:56
Speaker
If there isn't like some kind of like spoken pun, then there's going to be like a visual gag.
00:34:03
Speaker
There might be like a background detail. Yeah. yeah It just keeps going. Yeah. ah Now the next, the next thing, the next thing to appear on the roof is,
00:34:16
Speaker
Are the future cops. Boom. They teleport in in sort of a Terminator pose, but they are fully clothed. Missed opportunity, in my opinion. Now, at first, Tai Hong thinks that they're robbers, but they explain that they're actually cops from the future.
00:34:32
Speaker
So Tai Hong agrees to help them out to try and find the guy that they're looking for who's supposed to go to his school. I also just want to take a moment to interject that they can't lie.
00:34:45
Speaker
If they lie, they will be electric. They will get a small electric shock for some reason. This almost, this comes up like once in the whole movie. And it's weird do They do lie. Yeah, and they definitely are like from the future and have to disguise themselves. I was just like, how is this going to play out when they get there? And then it doesn't.
00:35:07
Speaker
It was really strange. Um, but but but but but let's see. Uh, Ty Hong agrees to help them out, but they'll need to hide from his mom. Mom brings home a date named Richard and they seem to be really hitting it off.
00:35:23
Speaker
Uh, but then mom sees a future cop sneaking around, which kind of freaks her out. Uh, they are kind of a weird looking bunch to see in your house.
00:35:35
Speaker
Now, ah the future cops know that the judge they want to protect goes to Tai Hong's school, so they all infiltrate in various fashions. Vega poses as another student, Guile as a teacher, and Dalsim as Tai Hong's maid-slash-manservant.
00:35:53
Speaker
There's probably something racial there that I don't know em enough about to comment on so... ah Still, the next time that the pompadoured school bully messes with Tai Hong, the future cops absolutely wreck his shit.
00:36:07
Speaker
Doll seems stretchy limbs completely throw him for a loop and freak him out. Someone tries to haze Vega at one point by hiding a snake in his book bag, but Vega tears the snake's heart out and eats it before whipping the snake around like nunchucks and wearing it like a belt.
00:36:28
Speaker
That in fact does have a Chinese opera element where they play like the traditional music. Yeah. Yeah. They just kind of use it just, just slipping that in as a little bit of texture.
00:36:39
Speaker
Okay. Okay. Yeah. Is there any reason he eats the heart? I don't know. Cause he's tough. it's It's certainly impressive. It's certainly impressive.
00:36:51
Speaker
He rips the heart out and he eats it. I mean, what is he going to Put it down? i don't know. He's going rip the heart out and throw You got to do. Yeah. like That's true. Prestige. Appropriate response, I suppose.
00:37:03
Speaker
um Now, Guile, the teacher, ah teaches his first class, a music class, where Crab Angel is there and she is crushing hard on him, despite the fact that he looks
Baddie Awards and Closing Remarks
00:37:15
Speaker
fucking insane. Nope.
00:37:19
Speaker
He's his wig instead of doing if you're picturing Guile with the blonde flat top. That's not it. He's basically got a bride of Frankenstein that has been rotated 90 degrees so that the stripe is in the front.
00:37:33
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, how is you going to use it as a broom? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it's true. And he keeps like like rubbing it with his hands, which is such a great move. Just ah yeah like straightening it out. like, that's not anywhere. just fluffing it.
00:37:47
Speaker
yeah Now, the two of them, ah Crab Angel and Guile, they share an elaborate musical fantasy. isn It's of the two of them falling in love and raising babies with Guile's striped hair and then changing the diaper and so you can just have a shot of a dirty diaper.
00:38:05
Speaker
A dirty diaper's funny, right? And then you see the baby's penis. That's funny, right?
00:38:12
Speaker
ah They also do a parody of the spinning wheel scene from Ghost. Yeah. you love to see. always love it. It's pretty sweet, actually.
00:38:23
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. It was actually a kind of a little romantic montage. Like if you don't think about the fact that he's her teacher. Sure. Yeah. Right. Yeah. That he's a cop from the future.
00:38:35
Speaker
Now, ah back at home, Chun-Mai has met the future cops and she has figured out that Vega is a cop from the future. I love that she knows it, too. She's like, you're a future cop, aren't you?
00:38:47
Speaker
Aren't you a future cop? And I think this is where maybe he he he starts getting electrocuted. Because at some point, someone does get electrocuted. Yes, this is the only time it comes up Because I remember thinking, like, why is he getting electrocuted?
00:39:01
Speaker
There is a point where Ching-Mae's mom gives her kind of like a taser weapon. Oh, no yeah. healthpro protectionction It's kind of one of those things because like, yeah, it has like a lot of um admirers who are constantly like calling her and she's like, I'm too good for all of you. Yeah.
00:39:21
Speaker
But yeah, no, that that that sequence, the electricity just comes from within. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So the two of them, they go on a date. Where, to prove that he's from the future, Vega transports them both inside an arcade game.
00:39:37
Speaker
Specifically, Super Mario Bros. It's so good. Yeah. Yeah. It's so cute. Yeah, they're both wearing cute little Mario overalls, and they have little mustaches on.
00:39:49
Speaker
Which they then immediately shave off. Yes. A gag that I think delighted eight-year-old me. I was like, this is, I get it. I get the joke.
00:40:02
Speaker
Now the two of them, they hang out inside the game, chatting, getting to know each other while growing giant and fighting turtles. She asks him about romance in the future and Vega reveals that no one has sex in the year 2043 and
00:40:21
Speaker
Bummer alarm. Bummer alarm. This next bit is kind of a bummer.
00:40:28
Speaker
Because of AIDS. Yeah. Yeah. That's all you could tell this movie was made in the 90s. You couldn't make a movie in the 90s without bringing up AIDS. It's also kind of a like, trademark Wong Jing kind of go-to joke.
00:40:44
Speaker
Okay. So, kind of, yeah, sort of. Like, you can tell why he's kind of described as a B-movie director in a lot of in a lot circles.
00:40:56
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. I could see that one playing better in the cheap seats. I don't know. Now, ah instead of doing the nasty, in the future, they just pop orgasm pills.
00:41:09
Speaker
When Chun-Mai tries one with embarrassing results, she runs home out of the arcade, and Vega follows her. and busts through her door, and she stabs him in the back with a knife.
00:41:23
Speaker
It's no big deal, though. He's impervious to knives. Yeah. It's handy. Yeah, good. Doesn't come up again, but good to know just as character.
00:41:35
Speaker
In the future, they've solved the problem of knives. So, perfect. Scotland, rejoice. Yes, thank God. I'm sorry, Scotland.
00:41:46
Speaker
Yeah. Hang in there someday. You'll blunt those damn things. Now, sooner or later, we're going to get back to the A-plot with the judge.
00:41:57
Speaker
But first, there's a big track meet at the school.
00:42:02
Speaker
Yeah. ah Choi-nae gives Tai-hung a sweater that she knit that turned out absolutely crazy. This really made me laugh.
00:42:15
Speaker
But also, I'd rock that sweater. It looked pretty sick. um He doesn't want to embarrass himself in front of her at this track meet. But Pompadour is trying to jam him up again. he glues him to the chocks.
00:42:29
Speaker
But then Donald Seam breathes fire on his butt, which causes him to rocket out of the gate. And he ends up winning the race by just a tongue. Mm-hmm. And then he gets some super science chips that he can eat that give him powers.
00:42:47
Speaker
And you can tell it's a ah movie from the nineties because those chips are actually mini discs.
00:42:55
Speaker
Throwback to the Sony mini discs. So yeah, he'll, he'll like shove guiles in his mouth and then he'll have guile powers and he'll use them to do something or other at the track meet.
00:43:08
Speaker
It goes great. really, it really pans out for, ah but now the future rascals show up and pompadour meets up with them and they're going to team up the bully and the future rascals.
00:43:25
Speaker
What a nightmare.
00:43:29
Speaker
Ken goes undercover as a new teacher, another new teacher at the school. And when he finds Vega in class, he shoots him in the armpit with tranquilizer darts that drain his chi.
00:43:42
Speaker
Then, add insult injury, he goes after Guile's girl, Crab Angel. Not okay. He takes her on a date to the eight twelve which is like a 7-11 plus one over one.
00:43:56
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Again, this texture. Yeah, just great stuff. So, Guile follows him there, and the two of them, they duke it out.
00:44:09
Speaker
Guile gets hurt when Ken throws a car at him, and we get a little bit of him lodged in a car, a la Omar Sharif in Top Secret.
00:44:20
Speaker
Yeah. He is revived when a Crab Angel gives him a big smooch, and he goes back for round two with Ken. And this time he's victorious, but Ken escapes before Guile can force him to give the antidote for the chi-draining tranquilizer.
00:44:39
Speaker
Guile returns to Vega to let him know that he has failed. But then Ken shows up at the last minute to hand over the antidote yeah to honor the defeat that he faced at Guile's hands. He's like, you know what you did? Beat me fair and square.
00:44:52
Speaker
Fair enough. Okay, so I didn't miss anything. No, that is literally what happened. Okay. Just like, well, on second thought.
00:45:03
Speaker
Yeah, I just sort of accepted it. i didn't fully understand. Well, yeah, yeah. You're not going to you's not goingnna die. That'd be a bummer. Yeah, it's just setting up Ken's face turn for the last time. Yeah, yeah, of course, of course. Yeah, yeah.
00:45:17
Speaker
Foreshadowing. Yeah. It all pays. This is like tightly made Swiss watch. was say, it's intricate clockwork in this in this particular picture.
00:45:29
Speaker
Not a moment wasted. Not an ounce of fat. ah Let's see. Meanwhile, back in 2043, M. Bison is liberated from his imprisoning energy sphere by a squad of literally faceless henchmen, yeah effectively making the whole movie pointless.
00:45:52
Speaker
Uh, he's tired of waiting on the rascals. So he's going to go back in time and find the judge himself. And then I guess return to trial so he can go. He still wants to, you know, respect the process.
00:46:05
Speaker
Which I appreciate. This is more about clearing my name than anything. I can do the time. Uh, back in 1993, it's Tai Hong's birthday.
00:46:26
Speaker
His mom announces that she and Richard have gotten engaged and that Tai Hong will have to change his name to go with the new family name. His name will now be Yu Ti Hong.
00:46:38
Speaker
which is the name of the judge that everyone's been looking for. It's all coming together. It's a Swiss watch of a movie. Yes. Oh my goodness. What a surprise that I never guessed at all. The first time we met him.
00:46:50
Speaker
What a twist. were No other characters. no and literally No one else. It could be somehow. It never occurred to me that it could be him. That's awesome.
00:47:02
Speaker
He's the chosen one. was like, I wonder where they're going to find that guy. You should watch it again, and this time you'll see all the clues. Yeah, the way they were letting me know. Yeah, yeah. It's like watching The Sixth Sense for a second time. Mm-hmm.
00:47:19
Speaker
Pompadour, he overheard all of this. Well, because he was at Tai Hong's birthday party. And so he runs off to tell the future rascals all about it. Now, unfortunately, Anne Bison is there now, and the vibe has shifted from mischievous to evil.
00:47:35
Speaker
He orders them to kidnap Choine and use her as bait.
00:47:40
Speaker
The rascals take over the school and do kidnap Choine. Luckily, Vega has brought some super chips from the future that will give superpowers just like they have to anyone if he jams it into their head.
00:47:58
Speaker
yeah Yeah. Makes sense. This is how it works. You have a chip in your head and it gives you superpowers.
00:48:06
Speaker
Tai Hong is about to run away when he sees the ugly sweater that Choi Nay knit for him. And he decides that he can't leave her. It's time for the final fight.
00:48:17
Speaker
The gang's all there now. Thanks to the superchips, Chun Mai becomes Chun Li and Richard becomes Blanca. There's only one Street Fighter 2 character left that hasn't made an appearance in the movie.
00:48:32
Speaker
So at this point, I started becoming afraid that either Mom or Ty Hong would turn into Balrog, the only black person in the game. ah But instead of that happening, thank goodness, Mom becomes another Chun-Li and Ty Hong becomes Goku from Dragon Ball Z, yeah which really threw me for a loop. That was be really interesting.
00:48:57
Speaker
That was a wonderful choice. Be like, yeah. And then Goku's there. Now it's getting real. yeah Really, and and more directors should resort to this at at the climax.
00:49:11
Speaker
Suddenly Goku is there. Yeah. or one of the characters was Goku the whole time. Yeah.
00:49:21
Speaker
ah Now, Ken, he swaps sides to the good guys, and they all team up to beat the shit out of M. Bison. Tai Hong fastball specials Vega right through Bison's chest, and Guile pops a bomb in the hole, blowing him apart.
00:49:40
Speaker
After that, the future cops resign themselves to returning to their sexless future. But then Ryu shows up and he tells them that another bad guy just showed up in 1993.
00:49:52
Speaker
Everybody throws some deuces at the camera. Freeze frame. Roll credits. Boom. Yatta! What did you guys think of Future Gops?
00:50:05
Speaker
Real good time. Yeah. Yeah. Delightful. yeah Yeah. Just a real ray of sunshine. You can see. I don't know if you'll be able to see it. But you can might know my notes, the words just keep getting bigger as I got to the end. Two Chun-Li's, Blanca, Guggen. Just, it was great.
00:50:26
Speaker
Yeah. and Well, final thoughts, five-star ratings in terms of watchability and weirdness. Who wants to kick us off?
00:50:39
Speaker
I can go. Yes, Greg, my classic gopher. I'm just going to start calling on you, Greg. Sure. We're going to streamline this process. Yeah, I'm pretty good at just being like, no one else is going. I guess it's me.
00:50:51
Speaker
um So I really, really enjoyed this movie. i got i have to say as a final thought, it's really interesting to see like people really faithfully recreate the Street Fighter moves in live action.
00:51:06
Speaker
And just be like, oh, they're just going to like literally hover upside down and spin around like they do in the game. It made me re-see the game in a different way, if that makes any sense.
00:51:16
Speaker
Absolutely. Really fascinating. Love the energy. Like I said, it's like an airplane, ah like a hot shots. Just a real good time. Watchability, I'm going to give it a four.
00:51:27
Speaker
I think a lot of people could like could like this movie. It's just a real blast. And weirdness, because it is a sort of a screwball Looney Tunes-esque kind of affair, like when it's just like, oh, they're like holding him upside down and electrocuting him because they don't want someone to know he's a man because he's a broom.
00:51:51
Speaker
and just kind of run with it. I could see like out of context that could be like weird, but I think in the context of it being like a Looney Tunes or airplane style affair, I'm going to say weirdness only like a three and a half.
00:52:06
Speaker
Okay. I think that's totally fair. How about you, my heart? Where did you land? um I would give this, um honestly would give this a four and a half for watchability.
00:52:18
Speaker
And the half is only, Because for a lot of people, you'd need subtitles. um You know, I don't mind that.
00:52:30
Speaker
ah so and So for me, it was a five. um i yeah Yeah, it was just ah ah really a really fun movie. um And as for weirdness, I'd give it about a three.
00:52:45
Speaker
Like, ah it does, I do think... You know, like I said, I'm a little familiar with the Street Fighter 2 franchise. And I also had Chris to be like, that's so-and-so and that's so-and-so. And the names, for some reason, are more familiar to me.
00:53:05
Speaker
um But I think out of context, it might be a little weirder. unless Unless you're a kid. Tough to say. Yeah. it's tough yeah I would love to show this to someone who had never seen any Street Fighter properties.
00:53:22
Speaker
Honestly, i would be really intrigued to figure out or to hear like what a kid today would think of this movie. Yes. um Because just talking about like the weirdness, it's kind of, of it does operate on this kind of cartoon logic.
00:53:42
Speaker
And the aesthetic actually does carry through like from the sci-fi future that they come from where they're all fighters. Like that's really just a flavor. um but when it turns into like a high school screwball with a loser who becomes a hero kind of arc,
00:54:00
Speaker
there's still that cartoon sensibility. um this on this viewing, uh, cause when I was eight, I think I, this is not the kind of thing I might've appreciated, but like everything is kind of cartoonish. Like they get the actors kind of like move bigger. Yeah. and kind of Very style. Oh oh yeah.
00:54:22
Speaker
Yeah. Like the bricks, like it's all like kind of like a breakaway kind of set. um And I think that that is kind of part of the secret sauce that makes it work. Yeah, that he doesn't go like that hint of like power rangers. yeah yeah Yeah, that's right.
00:54:40
Speaker
Yeah. Oh, my God. Oh, those high schoolers. What can't they do? Yeah. Well, I gave it a ah four.
00:54:50
Speaker
ah I'm going bump it up four and a half in terms of watchability. It was very fun. was very funny. And I think I might have gone better if our subtitles were at better translated.
00:55:01
Speaker
I think we didn't have good subtitles. I genuinely would give it a four and a half if it had better subtitles. Because also as a subtitler, it was a little hard for me to watch in that regard. So I missed some things. I was like, why did they write that? was like, this is probably just a fan. It's probably just a fan.
00:55:16
Speaker
Yeah. And there are probably better ones out there. Yeah. We probably watch the same ones. I'm sure I might go and see if I can find a better one. looked at it. I looked to find another source to see if I could find a different subtitle file. And it seemed to be the same one, but with extra languages added on top of it. So i was like, I guess it doesn't matter which one.
00:55:33
Speaker
no Yeah, because I did. um Because it mostly works for me. There's some there's some cultural jokes that I don't totally get. I've never lived in Hong Kong.
00:55:44
Speaker
Right. And there's some puns that I didn't get, but I distinctly remember my mom chuckling. okay Okay. Yeah. ah like at the, at crab angels name. i was like, there's something dirty about that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I was, especially that one. I was like, I feel like crab angel references something.
00:56:04
Speaker
don't entirely, slightly like, uh, you know, uh, little ribald. Yes, that's right. Yeah. Um, but I have heard there was like a recent release on that has like new translations. And actually really interestingly, I was going through some of the reviews online And someone mentioned that he loves this movie so much that they lovingly rewrote the subtitles so they could show it to their friends.
00:56:32
Speaker
Wow. Okay. Nice. I'm really intrigued. And I'm like, I think I should reach out to this person. Yes, definitely. I would love to watch this again in higher quality with better sub file.
00:56:44
Speaker
Well, real quick, three and a half for weird, but let's move on. We've talked about all that. Let's head over to the next segment of the show. We're going on a little bit. Did we have everybody give a rating? Oh, I guess.
00:56:55
Speaker
Oh yeah. Glow. didn't get numbers out of you. Oh, oh my gosh. Um, to quantify this, I think watchability, I would say also for, um, it's so visual.
00:57:06
Speaker
It's so kinetic. You just kind of go along with it. Um, and I think you're pretty great. You're pretty good in terms of weirdness. Yeah, because I think it's really the tone shift and like the unexpected storyline that really throws you. It's not that weird on the on the surface.
00:57:25
Speaker
no Once you get past the buy-in of it, it all makes sense in and of itself. Yeah, it's got an internal logic. Yeah, yeah. So yeah, I think I agree with everyone that maybe be like the the weirdness rating is actually not that high. So maybe like three, maybe even two and a half.
00:57:42
Speaker
yeah Yeah, fair enough. I wouldn't call it normal, but... No. No. It's like more wacky than The fact that it exists is weird. But the fact that it exists as it is, I think, makes more sense.
00:57:57
Speaker
All right. Anyway. Okay. Here we go. On to act three of the show. We're going to talk about a little bit of a tangent.
00:58:06
Speaker
Sure, the movie is the main event. But that's not the case with this segment. No need to be sad lament.
00:58:19
Speaker
Cause we're going on tangent.
00:58:25
Speaker
Yeah, that's the name of this segment. Going on a tangent.
00:58:51
Speaker
It still makes me laugh. So this week we're talking about movies that are adapting fighting games. I wrote down every one I could think of.
00:59:03
Speaker
Okay. Okay. So we got, obviously previous to this, we had City Hunter with that scene that was adapting Street Fighter 2.
00:59:12
Speaker
You've got, we touched on it briefly, but Street Fighter, directed by Steven D'Souza, starring JCVD and Raul Julia. You guys have any thoughts on that one? It's been a while since I've seen it.
00:59:23
Speaker
Never seen it. Never? but Maybe when I was younger, but if I did, I don't recall any of it. Yeah, I think similar for me as well.
00:59:34
Speaker
I think I did see it when it came out, because Raul Julia has, like, M. Bison really rings a bell. Yeah. Mm-hmm. What about you, Anna? You ever seen that? I've also never seen it.
00:59:45
Speaker
Wow. Okay. I'm the only person who's probably seen that movie in the last 15 years.
00:59:53
Speaker
No, it's probably been 20 for me. I guess time for me to rewatch Street Fighter. There you go. How about The Legend of Chun-Li?
01:00:04
Speaker
I forgot that that one came out, actually. Oh. Was that, like, that was more recent. Like, was that, like, more like the 2000s? Yeah. Yeah. That was, like, the mid-aughts, I want to say. Was she from Smallville, the person who played it?
01:00:19
Speaker
Yes. Okay. don't remember her name. You've got Chris Klein in there, and you can find a YouTube video. Wow. Of every line that he delivers in that film.
01:00:32
Speaker
Just a super cut of him in that movie. And it's so intense. He's like, he's slathering it on. he's doing so much acting with his eyebrows.
01:00:43
Speaker
I love it. My name's Nash.
01:00:48
Speaker
All right, you got Street Fighter 2, the animated movie, an anime directed by Gisaburo Sugi. ah well The only other movie that did that I saw that I know about, he did a Jack and the Beanstalk in the 70s. He did a lot of work. He was a skilled guy. It's supposed to be pretty good. Never saw that one.
01:01:08
Speaker
There are also two animated series of Street Fighter, one that aired on the USA Network from 1995 to 1997 with episodes. wow And at some point, G.I. i Joe bought the doll rights to Street Fighter. So all the Street Fighter characters are also canonical within the world of G.I. Joe. They share a character.
01:01:30
Speaker
Oh, interesting. That's crazy. There was also another Japanese series that adapted a Street Fighter 2 manga by Yasushi Baba that ran for 29 episodes in 1995. That's just the Street Fighter adaptations that I could find.
01:01:48
Speaker
And Street Fighter, I think, was the most adapted one. Makes sense. Then you've got Mortal Kombat. Came out in 1995. Classic, I gotta say.
01:02:01
Speaker
Paul W.S. Anderson. How do you guys feel about Mortal Kombat? It's been a while since I've seen it. I recall liking it at the time. And I like Paul W.S. Anderson enough, in a way, to... I should check it out again.
01:02:17
Speaker
haven't seen it. I like Avenger though. I know we've watched it together. I know you and I have watched it together, so it must not have made an impression. Okay, well, who's in it?
01:02:31
Speaker
Nobody. ah Christopher Lambert plays Raiden. Yep. Oh, okay, no, I do remember that. Okay. Okay. Yeah, i don't okay I don't think it was the most memorable in terms of plot.
01:02:44
Speaker
no No. I mean, they're all tournament movies. plot's pretty straightforward. You all get gathered to come to mysterious island to fight to the And kudos to Wong Jing for not doing the obvious choice and saying, I'm going to make a tournament movie with all the guys from Street Fighter 2.
01:03:06
Speaker
Instead, I'm going to make a wacky comedy about time travel. All right. Then you had Mortal Kombat Annihilation in 1997. That one I just straight up do not remember.
01:03:17
Speaker
I don't think I saw that one. that was Was that W.S. Anderson again? No, I don't think so. Then you had Mortal Kombat reboot in 2021.
01:03:29
Speaker
oh oh that one was not bad. If I remember right, it was great. You saw it? I watched it. It sort of, I think it reminded me of like the anime Ninja Scroll.
01:03:43
Speaker
Okay. Very similar aesthetic to that. Okay. So not bad. And they're doing a sequel to that one that's coming out this October, October, 2020. Oh, nice.
01:03:53
Speaker
Listeners in 2043. It came out a long time ago. right. Then found, uh,
01:04:00
Speaker
right then i found a couple more minor ones. I've got a soft spot for DOA, which came out in 2006, directed by Corey. You win.
01:04:13
Speaker
saw portions of it one weekend at someone's house. I was like, what is this like dead or alive? It's pretty dumb. You should check it out. I was like, yeah, it looks pretty dumb. It's dumb as shit. It's yeah really satisfyingly dumb, obviously based on the dumbest of the fighting games, the one that inspired the beach volleyball spinoff.
01:04:32
Speaker
Yep. the fighting game that existed purely to show off ah jiggle physics.
01:04:40
Speaker
And it had a movie that suited that legacy. In 2009, somebody made a Tekken movie that lost $28 million. 2009. Yeah.
01:04:55
Speaker
yeah I might have to track that bad. That one sounds pretty intriguing. Cost $30 million made $1.6 million. Ooh.
01:05:06
Speaker
And then Fatal Fury had an anime and Virtua Fighter had an animated series. Okay. And so Darkstalkers also had an animated series one that was made, i think, for American audiences.
01:05:21
Speaker
I had a DVD of it and it was so ah cheap as hell. Yeah. And There was one frame, if you paused it, there was a letter that an animator had written to his girlfriend that was apologizing for something.
01:05:38
Speaker
I need to track that DVD down so i can find that. It's somewhere in our storage. That's incredible. So keep an eye out for that, listeners.
01:05:50
Speaker
Well, you guys want to play a game? Yeah. yay Yes. All right. It's time for a little two out of three are real.
01:06:00

01:06:30
Speaker
Two out of three are real. Maybe we talk all night.
01:06:40

01:07:28

01:08:02
Speaker

01:08:32
Speaker

01:08:39
Speaker

01:08:55
Speaker
If only my chef were a Time Chef.
01:09:00
Speaker
I can cook so many things if I just had enough time.
01:09:07
Speaker
Question number four. The Flying Mr. B, My Mr. My Mistress, or Mr. Possessed? Greg.
01:09:19
Speaker
Greg? My Mr. My Mistress. That's correct. Oh, that one's so good, though. i would watch. That sounds like a Wong Jing special.
01:09:29
Speaker
I just wanted to say it. Yeah, I think I felt really locked in when I came with Mr. My Mistress. got that You got that cadence. right. Question number five.
01:09:42

01:10:19
Speaker
Question number six. Uncle Con Man, the tricky master, or the spy dad?
01:10:31
Speaker
Greg. Greg? The spy dad.
01:10:38
Speaker
i'm Sorry, the spy dad is real. Anna. Anna? Uncle Con Man. Correct. There is no Uncle Con Man.
01:10:49
Speaker
There's definitely an Uncle Con Man character in a lot of Wong Jing comedy. Oh, yeah. But he has yet to have his own vehicle. That's what I'm telling you, Wong Jing. People want to see more of Uncle Con Man.
01:11:03
Speaker
Question number seven. Men suddenly in love. My wife is a gambling maestro. Or romance attack.
01:11:18
Speaker
Anna. Anna? Romance attack. Got it, sweetie. That's me and you later tonight. ah Question number eight.
01:11:33
Speaker

01:11:52
Speaker
I'm sorry, that's a real movie. Gloria or Anna? I was going to pick Beauty is My Name. That's correct.
01:12:06
Speaker
All right. Last question. The score is Greg one point. Anna three points. Gloria four points. So you're telling me I still got a chance. I'm telling this one is worth 90 points. i think you Still, this is your strong contender.
01:12:23
Speaker

01:13:07
Speaker
No, I'm sorry. Greg or Gloria, would you like to steal? What was the second one? Kung Fu Cops 4 Under the City. Greg. Greg? I'll say Kung Fu Cops 4 Under the City.
01:13:23
Speaker
That's correct. Wow. Wow. ah was Yes, it is true. Yeah. Raped by an angel for the rapers union is a comedy about what happens if your rapers unionize, I believe.
01:13:39
Speaker
Wow. Yeah, that sounds like, yeah, the bottom of the barrel. Yeah, yeah, that's not one I'm clamoring to find. No. Oh, it's the Batty Awards.
01:13:57
Speaker
Now you're messing with the Batty Awards. Congratulations all the nominees.
01:14:22
Speaker
That's right. Congratulations to all our nominees. Congratulations to Gloria on winning the game. thank you. Taking on the W for the guests. Somebody update the wiki.
01:14:36
Speaker
ah It's the baddie awards. It's the only award show that we do. ah I'm going to give out my baddie award. I'll kick us off.
01:14:47
Speaker
I'm going to give my baddie award for ah best mom. And that's obviously going to when King Tan as mom slash Chun Dai.
01:15:01
Speaker
ah who was insanely hot in this movie.
01:15:07
Speaker
And when i she brought Richard home and she got super horny because Richard could speak English. I was like, oh my, I speak English all day. Yeah. You're very good at speaking English, sweetie. We're made for each other.
01:15:26
Speaker
So yeah. Kudos to you, mom. Fantastic character. Greg, why don't you go Yeah, so ah honorable mention to whoever played the Koopa Troopa because it's like a person on a skateboard with a turtle shell just moving their arms back and forth.
01:15:42
Speaker
And i love seeing like human arms on a turtle because they're too long and it just always looks really great. So God bless that person. ah But my actual Batty Award goes to my favorite joke.
01:15:55
Speaker
ah which was when they're trying to convince the people that they are the like the principal that they should be in the school. and they're like, yeah, these are ah these two are brothers. he's like, he's the younger brother.
01:16:07
Speaker
and he's like, yeah, I'm 16 and a half. And then the other guy goes, yeah, I'm 17. He's my younger brother. And then he turns to says, you'll finally admit that I'm your brother. And he turns to him and he just goes, brother.
01:16:19
Speaker
And like claps his hand. and it was just like, it delighted me so much. It's just like this perfect, just like non sequitur into another tangent that then everybody just pretends it didn't happen. And we move on with the movie. And it just, every time,
01:16:35
Speaker
I love a joke like that. So just wonderful. Yeah. There are so many wonderful little moments like that. Anna, do you, do you have a bad ear word? ah Yeah. um it's Well, and it's just another little moment of, of visual gag. ah You know, I've seen, I've seen a lot of parodies of the ghost pottery wheel scene over the year, though. I have yet to see the movie ghost actually. interesting However,
01:17:02
Speaker
i have I've never seen a ah movie with the confidence to then have a poster of the actual Ghost Pottery Wheel scene like what it were like five minutes after their parody. It was just just real real gutsy. I love it.
01:17:22
Speaker
Did not catch that. Oh, God. How did you miss it it was so prominent. It was so many things to pay attention to. It's true. There's a lot going on. Gloria, do you have a baddie award?
01:17:34
Speaker
Uh, I actually was also going to go with the mom character. alas she's great. She's great. There's this running gag through the movie where, you know, when her kids are down, she's just like, just take a deep breath. Oh yeah. And just say to yourself, what a wonderful world.
01:17:52
Speaker
What, what air that this is so fresh. Don't you feel better now? Um, And yeah she's actually a real fox in this movie. She's very stylish. Yes.
01:18:04
Speaker
At one point she comes in in this like little black number with a big hat. I think that's at his ah di' like big birthday party. um And there's also this absolutely random scene near the beginning of the movie where we get introduced to the family.
01:18:23
Speaker
um And in the middle of you know her kids having this big fight, the plumber shows up. Oh, yeah. both Kitchen faucet.
01:18:35
Speaker
um And it's just this absolute non sequitur joke that ah she's telling him, like this faucet doesn't work. And of course, it you know plays perfectly well in front of him.
01:18:48
Speaker
and he's like, I got to go call the company because there's nothing to do here. And of course, when he turns his back, it's malfunctioning again. And for some reason, water just starts spraying out of every corner of the kitchen, absolutely st soaking her. And she's like squealing. It's so good.
01:19:06
Speaker
The second the the plumber returns from his phone call, he's like, why are you all wet? And she's like, the faucet's not working. And the plumber gives this infamous, legendary...
01:19:21
Speaker
timeless line where he's like, I once watched this porno where a housewife drenched herself in water to seduce the plumber and I just want you to know that I love my wife very much.
01:19:36
Speaker
and She's like absolutely humiliated and she's like, I can't, she just, she starts some mumbling and there's just water like cascading out of her mouth. And that was a such a good moment.
01:19:46
Speaker
That is an A-list actress who can pull off that entire scene. yeah Yeah. Yeah. So listeners, hopefully we've convinced you to check this movie out. Check it out. I think we'd we'd give it a full recommend to anybody.
