Introduction to the Podcast

Hi, guys. Welcome to the Alion and Nita podcast where we get down to business every week. I'm your host, Alion, and I'm so excited to have you join me for this week's show. If you've been following me from the very beginning, you may remember that I did a series entitled The Elements of Success. If you're new to my podcast, I want to encourage you to go back and listen to those podcasts. I know that you're going to love the information that I
00:00:46

talked about in all of those podcasts.

New Series: Success Hindrances

00:00:49
Speaker
But this time around, I am going to do success hindrances. I'm going to start a new series entitled success hindrances where I'm going to talk about some of the things that can hinder you from being successful. This week, I am going to talk about fear of failure.

Understanding the Fear of Failure

00:01:07
Speaker
I'm sure that at some point in time in all of our lives, we have experienced failure and depending on how we process that failure, it can hinder us from growing.
00:01:18
Speaker
and trying again. Failure can shake our faith. It can affect our self-esteem. It can hinder us from trying again, and even worse, make us quit altogether. We're afraid to fail because we are afraid to lose our credibility. We're afraid that people won't respect us as much. We are afraid of criticism or ridicule. And one of the biggest fears is that we might lose everything.
00:01:48
Speaker
But what I've come to learn about the process of success is that it's filled with highs and lows. You face the threat of failure every single day because we don't know what the unknown is. The economy can change and your business can take a dip. Or if you're an athlete you can tear a muscle that can threaten your career.
00:02:10
Speaker
But the thing is, is that you have to get in the ring with the fear of failure every single day and fight it as if it's coming after your life. You have to continue to stay focused on your goal and your dreams no matter what happens.

Learning from Failures

00:02:27
Speaker
because in life we all know that bumps in the road happen. You might have a financial setback or health issue or somebody close to you might pass that may take an emotional effect on you, but the fear of failure cannot, you cannot allow the fear of failure or the fear of things coming up to stop you from accomplishing your goals. Sometimes some of the best lessons that you learn is through failure.
00:02:55
Speaker
I can tell you for myself personally, I have learned way more self from failing than I ever have from succeeding. Let me tell you a failure story of mine. I came up with this really brilliant plan to have an awesome sale for my company.
00:03:14
Speaker
I invested a lot of time, a lot of energy into stocking up my inventory. I bought marketing packages. I just thought that this was just going to be an amazing sale and a knock it out of the park win for my company.
00:03:32
Speaker
I did all of the work. I did all of the right things. And guess what? Only one person responded to the sale. One person, one person. I felt like I should just end my business and quit and give up. I was like all pouty and everything. But one thing that I had to learn to do was take some time to reassess.

Failure's Hidden Benefits

00:03:58
Speaker
Why did this fail? What could I have done better?
00:04:02
Speaker
And I learned that through failure, it really gives you the tenacity to learn and to grow and to step outside of the box. Failure gives you experiences. It teaches you patience. It gives you perseverance.
00:04:18
Speaker
You learn new strategies. You can even broaden your circle and start to connect with people that know more than you or actually can pour back into you and give you good ideas. There are an infinite amount of possibilities that comes from failure.
00:04:35
Speaker
but you'll never learn unless you experience it. Failure can even reignite your passion for whatever it is that you're doing. The truth of the matter is that you never really fail. You only learn. If you ask the world's most successful people, they'll tell you
00:04:53
Speaker
Their greatest lessons came from their failures. Jay Z has a quote that says, those who are successful overcome their fears and take actions. Those who aren't submit to their fears and live with regrets. The next time you experience any kind of failure, do your due diligence, reassess, ask the right questions. Why did I fail? How did I fail? What could I have done better? Get feedback and listen to other people's criticisms.
00:05:23
Speaker
Develop a plan, write out what you've learned, but most of all, try again. Remember that just because you fail does not mean you're a failure. Failure is an event on the path to success. It does not define who you are. The only time you fail is when you quit.
00:05:45
Speaker
I have a resource for you. It's a book entitled, Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Lose by John Maxwell.
