Heavy Beds: The Amazing Race Season 19, Episode 6

The teams head to a country that has not yet been featured on The Amazing Race: Malawi!
As they race through this southern African country, they get a taste of what life is like for the locals. Hauling tobacco, sewing clothes, and making toys for kids. Then they have to carry their beds to the pit stop and a couple teams make a critical mistake!

Hello, everybody. Welcome back. This is The Amazing Rewatch. We are back after a couple of weeks. We released the first five episodes a couple weeks ago, and now we're on episode six of season 19.

But it was like super odd because they were in Thailand and they did like most of the leg in the Phuket area. and then... Like they did the roadblock and the detour there and then they got on a train.

bus. Oh yeah, that's right. ah Like a long bus ride and then the only thing they had to do in Bangkok was go to like a place and feed some fish and then go to the pit stop. Yeah.

And we don't like it when the... um equalizers right before the pit stop. Yeah. It didn't make a lot of sense. It wasn't even an equalizer because people were all on different buses. It was basically just transportation yeah determined the pit stop.

So i think that they probably, i think we discussed this too, we they probably had to get them to Bangkok to like have more options for flights to go to our next destination, but they should have done like one or the other, like the detour or the roadblock there.

They get to the airport. There's only one flight to Malawi. So everybody is on the same flight. Yes. we I was not expecting to watch this episode when we did, so I didn't have my computer to take notes, and I did it on my phone.

And I can already tell that there's going to be so many yeah ah ah typos and misspellings and stuff. It's hard to do it on the phone. Okay, this is super weird, but like every time i get my nails done, and i like when they go from a little bit longer to shorter, it's like I have to re-figure out how to type.

Because, like, I'm used to my thumbs with, like, the longer nails and, like, with the placement of them on the keyboard on my phone. And then when I cut my nails and they're shorter, it's like everything is off. It's very weird. Yeah. So I can't type my phone when get my nails cut. needve record we watched it right after I did her nails. Yes. So it was all very fresh.

Challenges in Malawi: Tobacco Warehouse Roadblock

Malawi. They hop in taxis to go to this tobacco warehouse. Bill and Kathy are the last out. So in a lot of airports, they like have to get off the plane, go through customs like inside the airport. But it seemed like this one they were just able to like get off the plane and go.

yeah they landed on like a tarmac rather than a terminal. Yeah. And there was a lot of people ready to be picking them up in taxis stuff.

So it did make a difference. And maybe they haven't changed the rule yet where it's like they all just kind of like hold them after customs and let them go at the same time. Yeah. I don't think they have changed that rule yet. Yeah.

So it makes a difference. Yeah. Teams get in cabs. Jeremy and Sandy arrive to this um tobacco warehouse first. And the clue there is a roadblock. And it says, who's ready to put up a bale?

And the roadblock is this team member will wear, put on the uniform and steer bales of tobacco through the warehouse using a short handle dolly. Once they've transported 10, 200 pound bales to the drop off zone, they'll get their next clue. So it's this huge warehouse full of thousands and thousands of bales of tobacco. And they have to go through these walkways in between stacks and stacks of tobacco with a little dolly. It's really heavy.

And Jeremy does this roadblock and Justin and Ernie. They all arrive about the same time. Zach and Lawrence arrive and Lawrence does it and Tommy does it.

Yes. So Imani and Marcus and but Bill and Kathy's, they were the last two teams off of the plane and they're stuck in the traffic. Yeah.

And they. And then Imani and Marcus kind of get dropped off in the wrong place. It seems close by. doesn't seem too far away. So Bill and Kathy arrive right before them and Bill does it and then Imani and Marcus arrive and Marcus does it.

And. Once Imani and Marcus arrive, the first group of people doing the roadblock are about to seven out of their ten bales. so Yeah.

So, like, on the other side of the warehouse, they have, like, lanes taped off for each team.
Toy Trucks vs. Sewing: Detour Dilemmas

So they have to drive them over to this to their own lane and stack them, um like, ten bales deep. and Jeremy is the one that finishes first and the clue says to make your way to the memorial tower and search the area for your next clue then ernie finishes then justin then tommy and they all kind of leave pretty close to another and then so jeremy and sandy are first to arrive at this memorial tower and it's a detour

And then not grown up is they go to the Lilongwe Lea School and work with scrap material to construct two children's toy trucks.

yeah I think. What would we pick? We would probably pick the sewing one. Yeah, because you don't have to go out into the market and get customers to sew for them. and It's like they're there for you ready to go. Yeah. You just have to sew. Yeah. And Sadie has taken up sewing as a new hobby. it's a new thing to put on our list of things that we can yes on our resume for Amazing Grace. Yes.

And talk about at our monthly sister session as well. Yeah. I've gotten into sewing and I like it so far. Yeah, she's made some really cute things. Yeah.

So we probably picked that one. Yeah. um I have enough ah experience with sewing that I could probably get by. um Most teams choose not grown up. Ernie and Cindy choose all sewn up. So ah a bunch of teams start finishing about ah really closely after them. um Like Lawrence, Ernie, Justin.

Well, I said those ones already. Oh, you did? Yeah. Like those four, Jeremy, Ernie, Justin, Tommy, all kind of finish close-ish together. And then Lawrence. Yeah. And they all choose not Grunovic except for Ernie and Cindy. She's all sewn up.

Bill finishes. He says he's used to this because he has to haul. Yeah, there's a lot of references to them being farmers in this episode. Bales of hay. I said hails of bay. Hails of bay. and um Marcus is the last one to finish.

When he finishes, because in this warehouse, they have the workers for this tobacco warehouse. And they're all watching and cheering them the whole time and like dancing and singing. And they all crowd around Marcus and yeah dance. It looks like a fun place. yeah He thought that was really cool. um And they were they ah talk about their special needs child a couple of times in this episode. And say, like, we never want to give up because she we don't want her to ever give up.

Yeah. Um, so Jeremy and Sandy arrived to that school first and they start working on the trucks. Ernie and Cindy's driver are getting to the market to do the sewing one is lost.

Bill and Kathy and Marcus and Manny choose all sewn up. hmm. And Justin and Jennifer get to the school. Jennifer talks about her being a special ed teacher.

So she's around kids a lot and does projects like this and is really happy on this leg. Yeah. and we haven't got as much um fighting a of theirs or even their personalities are like,

interactions much in the last couple episodes yeah the first two episodes i was like oh no are they gonna be fighting the whole season but they've mellowed out a lot another thing that happens at the detour the not grown-up detour is lawrence He asks Sandy, he's like, how come you didn't do the sewing one? You don't know how to sew? And she's like, no. And he's like, Jeremy, that's like a mark against Sandy that she doesn't know how to sew. yeah And I'm like, what? He says, old man. Be careful. If you want to get married to her, she can't sew.

Yeah. And she's like, I'm a nurse practitioner. I can sew up bodies, but just because I can't sew clothes, I'm not... Yeah. I was like, every episode I like Lawrence less and less. Yeah. Like, I really liked him. i was like, oh, he's like cool British guy who's like well-traveled and he just like the comments that he makes and his attitude sometimes. I'm like, no. Yeah.

I don't like it. don't like Yeah. Well, Jeremy and Sandy finished the detour first. So, yeah. And the clue says, make your way to RK Furniture Shop on this roadside market.

To your next clue. um Kathy is really good at sewing. When they get to their machine, – oh, and Ernie and Cindy arrive at the same time as Bill and Kathy sew. Them getting lost on the way to the market made them lose quite a bit of time. Yeah. um Kathy's a really good sewer, but these are old machines that you have to manually like pedal. Yeah. So yeah, like the pedal is at the bottom and you just kind of have to like move it back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.

So when she's working on it, her thread breaks and a bunch of sewing that she was doing didn't even get done. But she still does well. Yeah. um All the other teams are working on the trucks.

And Andy and Tommy finish right after Jeremy and Sandy. Justin and dressed it Jennifer. And Justin and Jennifer. And Ernie and Cindy finish the sewing detour first.

And in the meantime, Justin and Jennifer get to his furniture shop. first and Jeremy and Sandy are right behind them. And the clue there says, transport and carry two handcraft of handcrafted beds to Kumbali Village in this isolated forest reserve.

What they don't know is that these beds are going to be used for their overnight stay. Yeah. It says, take them to fill at the pit stop. And their clue says, call for a driver to come pick you up because they're two big wooden beds and they've just shown up there in taxis. so um They start having people call for truck drivers for them.

The guy who's called the truck for Andy and Tommy, this green truck pulls up and he says, oh, you're in a green truck. So Andy and Tommy get in, but it was supposed to be Jeremy and Sandy's truck or something, or Jeremy thought it was, so he's like mad about that.

But Andy and Tommy get in the truck and he's like, this they're like this could have been their truck, but don't know, they told us to get in a green truck. So we're not like stealing from them, but not really intentionally. Yeah.

Didn't read the part of the clue says call a driver to transport your beds. Yeah. They're like asking the taxi driver how to put the beds in the taxi. They go to the taxi with a little car and they're like, can we put these on top? Can we put them inside?

He's like, no. Yeah. And then they're like, oh, we see now that we need to call a driver. Yeah. Okay, before we get to the end, because it's a little bit crazy, like coming up to the finish line, you should tell us about this new country that we are seeing on the race.

So this, we're in Malawi. It is our fourth country of the season. our first time to Malawi. Malawi is one of the world's least developed countries. It's officially the Republic of Malawi.

It's landlocked country in Southeast Africa, bordered by Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique. it has a It's about 45,000 square miles, roughly the size of Pennsylvania, and has about 22 million people there.

Their official language is English, but their national language is Chichua. I'm not quite sure how to pronounce that. And the third largest lake in Africa is in Malawi. It's called Lake Malawi. takes up a fifth of the um total area of the country.

It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There's lots of plateaus, forests, and fertile a agricultural land. People have lived in Malawi for thousands of years. Bantu-speaking groups migrated into the area around 2,000 years ago.

And then they have to walk the rest the way carrying their beds. Yes. they get dropped off, and the first people to get dropped off are Jennifer and Justin and then andy and Tommy and then Jeremy and Sandy. Yeah.

And here, the kind of highlight, a couple of teams turn around and are like, how much do I owe you and pay? But some people don't do that. So Justin and Jennifer get to the pit stop first, the mat first.

And Andy and Tommy are right behind them. So they're all four at the mat at the same time. And Phil says, Justin and Jennifer, you are the first team to arrive. However... I understand. Well, he doesn't even say however. And you can see Jennifer's face.

Like, he's like, you're the first team to arrive. And then she kind of like is like, yeah. And like she can tell that something's coming. I understand you did not pay your truck driver. Yeah. So you must do that before I can check you in. So they turn around and run back. So that means Andy and Tommy are team number one.

so And they went a trip to the British Virgin Islands. And I feel like this is the second time that that's happened. Yeah. It's like something happened. And Bill's like, do we need to pay our driver?
