One team's misunderstanding of the rules almost gets them eliminated. And another team is out of money and has to rely on the kindness of strangers.

hey everybody um jessica and sadie here season 19 episode 5 of the amazing rewatch this one was a very interesting episode yeah kind of wild yeah but not things i did not really like yeah Um, we, we watched the first half of it together and then we, Sadie had to leave and then we watched the second half of it separately.

But I saw Sadie like the day after and I was like, did you finish the episode? And she's like, yeah. And i was like, it was weird, wasn't it And she's like, yeah. And I'm like, well, we can't talk about it yet. i Don't say anything. I know. Yeah. So now we're here and we can talk about it. Don't give me your opinion. Yeah, we can't talk about Yeah, we we don't talk about the episodes before we record so that we have our genuine and first reactions yeah for you guys.
Thailand Adventures Begin

Yeah, well, we were in Thailand last time. We're staying in Thailand this time. We were in like southern Thailand near Phuket in the islands part of Thailand. and the first team to depart are Andy and Tommy. They'll depart at 10.07 a.m. The clue says make your way by local taxi to Hussan Hia Adventures or something like that.

Something. Some adventure company. And they get there first. Well, it says, then travel by local transportation up the Klonsong Prig River. Yeah.

And they don't know what local transportation means, but they ah some of them guess that it means an elephant. Yeah. Which is what it is. They get there and doesn't seem to be too far away from the departure matt and they see a speed bump there for liz and marie waiting for liz and marie when they finally get there justin and justin and jennifer depart at 1101 so almost a whole hour after the first team yeah jeremy and sandy at 1144 lawrence 1145 ernie and marcus

And so at this adventure place, it's yeah in the jungles of Thailand and they have to go like up this river on the back of ah an elephant. And the elephant has like a big saddle on its back. and when they get to...

Then to this destination on the elephants, they get off and they get another clue. And that one is a roadblock. And it says, who wants to hear some water music? So this clue will lead them to a nearby waterfall. And a traditional Thai flautist will be playing the music while they search the pool to find their next clue, which is tied to like a rock.

Yeah, it's like a burlap sack. Kind of. And Andy does this roadblock and he finds it pretty quickly. And in the little burlap s sack is koi fish statue and they're supposed to break it and open it. And inside there's a clue that says travel by Sung Tao, which is...

tuk-tuk. Yeah. travel by Travel by Sung Tao to this local shop. Once there, disassemble a traditional shrine called the Spirit House and deliver all the pieces to the Wat Chana Sokran Temple.

And then we have Bill and Kathy leave. At 1222. At 1222. Mm-hmm. So they're like two hours behind the first group, the first team. And all the teams are getting to this elephant place. It's not a hard task. You just have to ride the elephant. And the water task doesn't take too long.

um Justin does the roadblock. And Sandy and Lawrence. And in the meantime, Andy and Tommy got to the next place at this temple.

And the clue there is also a roadblock. Yes. It says, surprise, if you did the water roadblock, the other partner must do this one. And they have to reassemble the spirit house exactly as they found it. Yeah. So when they got to the shop, there was all these spirit houses that are kind of on this pedestal. They have candles and little. Little figurines. Yeah. Mirrors. A cup of water. yeah Things hanging down.

And some teams are smart and say, oh We're probably going to have to put this back together. Yeah. Let's write it down. Yeah. And some people say, no, we don't have to do that. yeah But Andy and Tommy did kind of say that, but they didn't get super, super detailed clues. Well, what they did was Andy looked at one side and Tommy looked at the other. So they each only had half that they were paying attention to. Yeah.

So then when they got there and Andy... No, Tommy has to do... Put the whole thing back together. he didn't quite know. So he takes the little Sung Tao thing back to this place and doesn't seem to be too far away because he gets it pretty quickly and comes back and finishes the shrine.

and um And then Liz and Marie leave at 1.35 p.m. So 11, 12, like over three hours behind. Yeah, three and a half. And we find out now that they have $186 for this leg of the race, which is not a lot. And a lot of teams seem to be pretty close to the end of their money for some reason. Yeah. Yeah.

And find out kind of like near the end of this episode that these sung towels kind of take up most of that money. Yeah. And so other teams. So Marcus heated the water roadblock and so does Cindy. um So Andy finishes the roadblock, the second roadblock quickly. And they get the clue that says travel 550 miles by bus to Bangkok. Make your way to Bangkok Noi Canal where you'll feed the fish and receive your next clue.

And so they get to the bus terminal and they find out that the bus isn't leaving until 430. And it's a 13-hour bus ride to Bangkok and it'll arrive at 6 o'clock the next day.

that gives some people in the meantime to make up that time difference. Yeah. Justin and Jennifer, they had their driver take a picture with their, like at this point, ancient camera phone. Yeah. Of the shrine, which was a smart idea. And so Jennifer had to do the other side of, or like the other roadblock.

And she passes it off pretty easily. Jeremy took notes and he has to do the roadblock. So Zach and Lawrence though, this team...

Was weird this episode. Yeah. And they had like, I don't know. I, I like them. I, I like a parent child team. The dynamic is always interesting.

And i I don't know. My feelings towards Lawrence have been going downhill. Yeah. From the very first. I was like, oh, he's a cool dad. Like, awesome. English accent, you know. But he just, like, thinks he knows everything. Yeah. And he doesn't allow Zach to have, like, an opinion or any input. And, like, whatever Lawrence thinks is right is what goes. so And when Lawrence messes up, it's fine. But if Zach messes up, it's not fine. Yeah. Yeah.

Or like he doesn't take accountability yeah when it is something that maybe was his fault. So Zach wants to take notes, but Lawrence is like, it doesn't say we have to put it back together. We don't need to take notes. So they take it apart and they leave.

And then they get there and Zach has to do the roadblock. And he's like, Like i i I wanted to take notes. And Lawrence was like, don't blame me. This is your responsibility. Yeah. And he doesn't even know it's his responsibility to like get there. And he wanted to do that when he was originally.

And then so Zach has to go back and take notes. And Lawrence is like, this is something that I would have been able to knock out pretty well. Like, okay.

um these but These drivers are asking for like $150. Mm-hmm. And that's taking a lot of people's money and they don't have a lot of money left for bus tickets. But um so this 430 bus has Andy and Tommy, Justin and Jennifer and Jeremy and Sandy. And then Lawrence and Zach get there not too long after. And they also book a 430 bus. So all the tees are getting on this 430 bus. Lawrence and Zach are kind of walking behind the group getting on the bus. and the ah so A different bus. Yeah. Well, the guy's like, no, you're a different company.

Zach was like, it's a first class it's ah it's a first class bus. Is this going to be an issue? And Lawrence says, no, not at all. Yeah. Which he was right. Yeah. the way he said it Yes. So then they start, they drive for like probably a couple kilometers, couple miles, and then they realize they're like, oh, we we're not supposed to take first class transportation. We need to go back and get on a different bus. So they get off the bus, they run back to the bus station, they buy new bus tickets, and

But they can't leave it to like eight yeah at this point. Yeah. So, yeah, that that's kind of like a long process. It takes place over this period. Yeah, there's more stuff that happens.

In the meantime, other teams are finishing up the second roadblock. Marie does the first roadblock in the waterfall. um Some teams are doing a good job at writing at drawing the temple and redoing the shrine. Some people have a little bit harder time with it. So...

All in all, that 4.30 bus had Andy and Tommy, Justin and Jennifer, Jeremy and Sandy. Lawrence and Zach were on a different 4.30 bus. Then there's a bus at 5.30 that have Amani and Marcus, Bill and Kathy, and erie Ernie and Cindy.

And but before Ernie and Cindy can get on their bus, they have to pay their driver. Yeah. so they are They have American dollars. Yeah. And the driver is won't accept American money.

And so he's kind of like haggling with them. And then this lady comes up and she's trying to kind of defend the driver. Yeah. She's like, you're ripping him off. You're ripping him off. No, you have to give him, ah you know, you have to give him this. You have to give him this. This is not enough. And the stuff. And she says, I'm going to call the police.

Like if you don't pay him. And Ernie and Cindy are like so mad at her. This crazy woman's come out of nowhere and she's ripping us off. And I can't believe you would do that to us. They keep saying that. Yeah. I can't believe you did this to us.

I can't believe you did this to us. I can't believe you do that to us. And they're like really mad at her. they were yelling at the driver too. They're like, you were a terrible driver anyway. You were terrible. And they hadn't said that at all until they had to pay him. I don't Yeah. It was kind of weird. They did have like a little talking head interview after where they were like, that was not our finest hour and that type of behavior is unacceptable to us. Like we don't act like that, but we were just so stressed. And that would be like one of my biggest fears is that like, because I'm a nice person and like, yeah,

I understand like these situations are heightened and I would hate for like my worst moment to be recorded on TV for everybody to see. Right. And then you can't take it back. Right.

So they havent ended up paying him $150 and get on the bus. And this is when we find out Lawrence and Zach can't get on until an eight o'clock bus. And I'm like, if they would have got on a if the first class thing would have been a problem, how long would the penalty have been?

Because 4.30 to 8, that's like three and a half hours. It couldn't have been. Because, yeah, they said we can't afford another penalty. i don't even think about that. That's like, it probably would have been 30 minutes. Right.

Should just stayed. Yeah. When we found out the end, they really should just stayed. Yeah. um So Liz finishes that roadblock at the temple last. And they, what bus did they get on?

They, well, oh yeah they try to get on the 8 o'clock bus, but they don't have any money. Right. So, yeah, they're, like, out of money. And they use all their money to get a ticket for this bus.

And their driver that dropped him off the bus station wants $40 more. dollars And the bus is about to leave. And they're like, if we don't pay him...

We can't buy another ticket for a bus. Yeah. And have to get on that bus. We have to get on the bus, but he won't let us leave because we have to pay him 40 more dollars. Yeah. don't have any money. So it was very. And the bus is like pulling away and it looks like they're going to get left and then it goes like on a commercial break. Mm hmm.

And then we come back and miraculously the driver agrees to just let them go without the 40 extra dollars. And then he also agrees to take them to the bus that has already left and has, like, stopped, like, a little ways away and is waiting for them. Yeah.

So they got so lucky. Yeah. Yeah. And so... it's a good thing they're cute. Yeah. I know. I was going to say, the rest of this episode, if they weren't, like, blonde, cute blondes, I don't know if they would have got as far as they did. No. um So, these bus rides are really long.

But they're all traveling at different speeds. Some of them are faster. Some of them make more stops. Yeah. Some of So it's kind of like up in the air as to who is actually going to arrive first. And we see this like before that some people get on things called express buses. Yeah. And some people don't. You should always ask for an express bus. Yeah. Always get an express bus. That's one thing we should write down. Always get an express bus.

The next bus arrives and then the next bus arrives. So only Lawrence and Zach and Liz and Marie are not there yet. Yeah. Yeah. And Liz and Marie said, we haven't seen any teams in over 24 hours and we don't even know we're going get anywhere. And we also don't have any money.

Unexpected Winners and Mistakes Realized

When they've already been in Thailand for two legs. Like, are they're not going to stay, are they? Maybe they're going to do three legs in Thailand.

i don't know. Because it doesn't make any sense for them to go all the way to Bangkok. just to go to the pit stop and then leave on the next leg yeah it was so weird i did not like this well i didn't like that there was two roadblocks and no detour or they should have saved the roadblock for after they arrive in bangkok the second roadblock yes something because i don't like that you just have like this travel and then go to the pit stop yeah i don't like that at all it was super weird So Imani Marcus and Bill and Kathy get to the canal next and they're kind of like working together like their drivers and stuff. They get the pit stop clue and they get back in their cabs to go to this pit stop and their drivers say they know where they are. And Imani Marcus are like, I'm going to hate to have because they don't know where they're at. They probably haven't seen teams in a while. They think that they might even be the last two teams. Yeah. So they're like, I don't want have to run this thing against Bill and Kathy, but we have to do what we have to do. And then they're like, but mom, pa, don't let them fool you. They look they're slow, but they would probably beat us. Lawrence and Zach and Liz and Marie finally arrive.

Somebody at the bus station, when they're dropped off, tells them that this canal is only three blocks away. Yeah. ah So they start walking. When we have seen all the other teams take these long taxi rides.

And um when they finally ask for directions again, somebody's like, oh, that's going to take you five hours to walk there. Yeah. And they're like, five hours? Well, I guess we don't really have a choice. So they just start walking. And they say, i would feel really bad to ask people for money in this area. and Yeah. So we're not going to ask for money.

So Amani, Marcus, and Bill and Kathy are dropped off. um Ernie and Cindy were stuck in traffic on the way to pit stop. Imani and Marcus and Bill and Kathy had really good cab drivers. So see, that's like another thing. Like they just have good cab drivers. And they run up to the mat and Imani and Marcus beat them. And Phil says, you're team number one. And they freak out. yeah They like did not expect that. Yeah. It was Kind of, it was crazy at the end. I know, like just like how the order ended And Bill and Kathy were really close behind him and you can see Kathy screaming in background. Yeah, I'm like, we have Imani and Marcus and Kathy screaming back there. She's screaming.

And so they're team number two. and Marcus won a trip to Bali. i think that's their first number one, right? I think so, yeah. And the best Bill and Kathy have done as well. Yeah. And Ernie and Cindy are number three.

Andy and Tommy decide to run at first to go to the pit stop. Jeremy and Sandy take like a tuck tuck. And then Justin and Jennifer arrive and feed the fish and they get back in their taxi.

And so then Andy and Tommy stop at this place for directions. And i it was I'm not sure what was going on, if it was a school yeah or something. But this lady comes out and they hand her the clue. And they're like, we need to go to this place and show her. And she's like, I'll go check. I'll be right back. And she walks away with the clue. Mm-hmm.

And they're just kind of like standing around. It's been like a little time passing and they're like, what do we do? Like she has our clue, you know, she hasn't come back. And so another lady walks out and she's like, oh, she's teaching a class.

She's upstairs teaching. Yeah. And they're like, no, we can't. We can't wait. And she's like, sit down, please. Yeah. They're like, no, we're in a race. That's so weird. Like, why would that lady do that? Just, like, walk away with their clue be like, I'll be right back. And there's cameras all, like, cameras filming her. And they just not come back. But I guess it seems like that lady went and got their clue. And then, like, another guy came out with directions. and Yeah. And showed them where to go.

So they... And then they finally just walk out of there and find a drive that knows where it is. Yeah. Like, you should have just done that to begin with. yeah So, um Justin and Jennifer end up being team number four.

Asks them about the problem on the bus, the first class thing, and he said, well, in regards to first class travel, it only applies to air travel. So you guys almost lost today because you got off that bus, and they're like, oh, well, okay. Yeah.

Yeah. So this is our second leg in Thailand, so already talked about Thailand last time, but just to give you some information on Bangkok specifically, it's the capital of the most populous city of Thailand.

It has about 10 million people, which is almost 16% of the country's population. With over 17 million people, about 25% of Thailand's population in the surrounding metropolitan area.

But lots of cool things to today to see there, historical things. And... um Interesting facts are again, in Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country that was never colonized by European powers. It's called the Venice of the East because of the canals it's built on.

like there's a lot of places that are called the the Venice of the blank. Yeah. yeah um Has a lot of world-renowned street food in one of the busiest airports in the world.

So, yeah. i am super interested to see if we're going to leave. Yeah. Because, like, literally, why would they them do that? Maybe just to get to – maybe Bangkok has more flight options for where they're going next, and they needed to get them to Bangkok in an interesting way.
