Challenges in Malawi: Weather and Tasks

Well, we left off in Malawi, our first time visiting this country, and there was a non-elimination league last episode with Amani and Marcus, so they have a speed bump ahead of them.

And we are staying in Malawi. So the team spent the night in that village with their with their beds that they had to carry to the pit stop. In different huts. And the first team to depart are Andy and Tommy at 528 a.m. And the clue says travel by bus two hours to the town of Salima where you will get your clue when you arrive to the bus terminal.

But I guess not. Because, yeah, they look very cold. They get on this bus. For now. Yeah. It starts filling up quickly. um Because Imani and Marcus left last, they're the last ones to get on the bus. And you have to buy tickets once you get on the bus.

So as the bus is filling, there's less less space. Yeah. It's very, very full. There's bunch locals getting on and they all have stuff. like Yeah. ah Cargo that they like have on the bus. And I was like, wo i don't think they're going to get on. But they do.

Salima. And when they get to the Clue, they're at the bus terminal. It's a roadblock. And it never says what the thing is. It doesn't, but I think I can find it.

But so the task that they have to do is they use a local bike taxi known as a kibatza and deliver a passenger carrying a fish to one of three specific addresses, then return to the star and hand over their earnings to the dispatcher.

So the people doing this roadblock are Cindy, Lawrence, Andy, Jennifer, Kathy, and Sandy. And Imani and Marcus are doing their speed bump, which is a slide puzzle of the Malawian flag.

Mm-hmm. um And those can be hard. i was going to say slide puzzles are hard. Yeah. um Because you think you get it right and then it's like, oh, just one thing is out of place and you have to like move everything around again to get it in the right place. So so that's something that we should practice. Yeah. I was thinking the same thing.

um So the people are getting on their bikes, stopping to ask for directions for the address they're supposed to be at. um andy's bike breaks while he's yes pedals just like fall off yeah and um cindy she gets to the address first and
Detour Choices: Canoe Race vs. Cargo Unloading

people are helping andy fix his bike just on the side of the road which is really nice and lucky laurence and sandy are kind of working together but they're really lost yeah she's like i don't think we're even helping each other it's the blind leading the blind They get directions they're two kilometers out of the way in the wrong direction. So they have to turn around. Yeah. Andy gets to his address and Kathy's right behind him. So Cindy was the first to finish. And when they get that clue, it's a detour and the choices are dugout or lug out.

So in dugout, they have to participate in the Lake Malawi dugout canoe race in a traditional canoe. They basically just like ah paddle out and around so like somebody out in the middle of the, not the middle of the lake because it's a big lake, but just like out a little ways and then turn around come back. And then lug out is they have to unload cargo from a ferry boat that includes two boxes of cabbage, two bundles of sugar cane, two bundles of brooms, one chair, one fan, and eight passengers.

That sounds really hard. Yeah. But canoeing is really hard. Yeah. And these canoes are weird, too. They look really heavy. And the opening is six inches wide. Yeah. Very thin. So they kind of just have to sit on top of it. Mm-hmm.

So both of these would be. Yeah. choose Which would be best. But the thought of having to carry eight human beings. Yeah. I think. Because it specifically says eight passengers that are expecting to stay dry. Yeah. So yeah. We would definitely. If that was part of the description. We would choose dugout. Yeah.

And most teams do. Yeah. Ernie and Cindy and Andy and Tommy were finished. They both choose dugout and they have to make their way to the lake. Imani and Marcus are still working on their puzzle.

They finally figured out this point, but some teams already finished the roadblock by the time they finish their speed bump. Yeah. And Imani's like, I thought this was a bump, not an explosion. Yeah. It was a hard speed bump. Some of them are really, really easy. Some of them are harder than others. But I do like puzzle type of yeah activities on The Amazing Race. but Yeah. They didn't have to like go anywhere, like get in a taxi. So it was like something that they could just do right there.

So, yeah. ah But Marcus ends up doing the roadblock. And I feel like he's done all the roadblocks. A lot of them. I know. So if they keep... You've to... Yeah. Yeah. Switch it up. Yeah.

Jennifer, she gets to the address to drop off her fish. But she doesn't have her clue with her. She gave to Justin when she left the roadblock. Yeah, this was very weird. So she doesn't know what to do next. And she's just standing there looking around.

And she goes, hmm. Yeah. Don't know what to do. I think I remember something about a bike master, but I don't know who that is. And just stands there.

And it probably is edited to look worse. Like, it probably is, like, one second that she kind of like, looks off in the distance and that, like, it makes it look like... I don't think so. She's standing there for a long time. I don't think that's... I think she stood there for a very long time. Because she was, like, the third person to get to... Or the fourth person to get to the address.

And she is the last one to finish the the roadblock by a long way. So... Kathy finishes the roadblock. Her and Bill choose dugout. um Lawrence and Sandy finish the roadblock.

So she was like, maybe I'll take my bike back to the bus station where I got it. And if I run into somebody else, see if they'll let me look at their clue. See if they'll let me look at their clue. I'm like, what? yeah Like if you don't know what to do just do that anyway. Like go back and get your clue.

um So Bill and Kathy arrived to the detour and Jeremy and Sandy and Lawrence and Zach as well. um Bill and Kathy just get in and start you know, make it up a plan and figure it out.

Lawrence and Zach. Lawrence yelling at Zach. He does not like how Zach is steering this boat. And Jeremy and Sandy are fighting. And Bill and Kathy are just, you know, making their way and enjoying it. and Kathy says, we don't argue and we don't blame. That's how you get things done quickly. Then we've been together for 50 years and we understand each other and like how we work together.

And she says, I'm sorry. i should have come back sooner. And he's like, I'm just glad you're okay. Yeah. He's being really nice. Yeah. Because it was the other way around, she would not be so nice, I don't think. Yeah, I don't think so either.

um Andy and Tommy finish the detour and they're told to look for the Jamaica shop. In the meantime, Ernie and Cindy were still looking. Are still looking and they realize that their lead is going quickly. And the this Jamaica shop is basically on the beach where they were. And they like go like clear up into like the town and ask like 15 people and then end up having to go back. hmm.

And they do, they well, they run into Andy and Tommy. Like, they come back down to the beach, and they run into Andy and Tommy, they're like, do you know where this is? And they're like, no. And Ernie and Cindy do end up getting there first, but not by much. yeah They don't U-turn anyone. And they don't U-turn.

And Andy and Tommy don't intern anyone. So now they need to go back to their cabs and get their bags. And pay their cab drivers. yeah And they get directions to where... Oh, the pit stop. The clue says make your way on foot to the next pit stop. Sunbird Livingstonian Hotel.

On Lake Wallawi. And... The U-turn board is has gotten an upgrade because it's in the past it has been like you pull out a sticker of the team and you put it on and then you put your own sticker and now it's like a digital board.

awful yeah don't like i don't think it we could actually physically do i know because they were like adult men yeah that he was carrying and like ah he carried like two or three people across and he comes back and he's like do you have any babies they're like nope and he's carrying them on his shoulders yeah and he says free football training camp or spring training camp or something and the boat's way out there in the water yeah it's not close their waist water it's probably like what do you think 50 feet out there crazy it looks way hard yeah and imani i mean like the stuff is not light either so and imani is like carrying all the stuff while marcus carries people i think even if we would have chosen that one originally we'd get out there and realize we had to carry an actual person and we would have switched well they're both so hard that if you actually had to do the the u-turn yeah i would be like actually gonna take a penalty

Anyways, we didn't have to make that decision, luckily. No. And they kept going. They just, like, plugged through it, plugged through it. Bill and Kathy finished the detour. Yeah.

Ernie and Cindy are running up that hill. It's really far. And Ernie ends up carrying Cindy's backpack. And Andy and Tommy are not very far behind him. And so Ernie keeps telling her. And Cindy's like, I'm sorry, babe. I'm sorry, babe. I'm trying. I'm trying. It slows down. It looks hot at this point. Yeah. You said it was cold earlier. Yeah. It's hot at this point. And i remember this moment watching back in the day because Andy and Tommy are running and Tommy's kind of telling Andy, pick up the pace a little bit. pick Come on. Can you do it? Let's go a little bit faster. I think I see Cindy in front of us. Like we can make it. Let's do it. Let's push. And Ernie's like, Cindy, they're right behind us. And it's so intense. And and we want it. We want a first place. We used our express pass. We want a first place. So they're at on the sandy area. They see Phil ahead. They're running. They all throw their backpacks off and run as fast as they can. Well, it's like, so it's, the camera is just like on Phil and you hear their voices, but you can't see the team. So you can hear Cindy saying, oh my gosh. And like Andy and Tommy saying like, hurry, hurry. can see him. I can see him. And like, you don't actually know what's happening. And then the camera kind of like turns and

A few of them, they weren't actually first. They were... Right. They got lucky a couple of times with other people's mistakes. But that's part of the game. so So Lawrence and Zach finish the detour. And Imani and Marcus are finishing up the detour. And so um they both have to go to this Jamaica shop and... And this is kind of where it confuses a lot of teams.

The Jamaica shop is still within... It's like on the beach. Yeah. This lake area. Where they were. Teams are leaving. It's kind of like a gated place. Teams are leaving the gate to go somewhere else to look for it. Or some teams don't leave the gate and go to the Jamaica shop. So Imani and Marcus find the Jamaica shop quicker than Lawrence and Zach.

So Imani and Marcus get to the U-turn mat first. but Before Lawrence and Zach. Yeah. And they say we're not going to U-turn anyone. So they're leaving the gate as Lawrence and Zach are coming in the gate.

And then go to the U-turn mat and continue to U-turn Imani and Marcus. Yeah. Although they just saw them leave. I know. I was like, what? and And Lawrence made the decision to U-turn Imani and Marcus, didn't even ask Zach. And he said they just went by, but they were going the wrong way.

That was really weird. He makes a lot of assumptions that are wrong. Yeah. And Jeremy and Sandy were still out on the water. Yeah. They knew that they were out on the water. And nobody has seen Justin and Jennifer. Like, there were two other teams he could have easily picked from. Yeah. But Marcus is very competitive and a big ah threat. So, I can see why. probably was like, if we have a chance to get them out, we should.

And Justin and Jennifer finally get to the detour and start doing the canoe thing and don't communicate very well at the first. We don't actually and see them like finish the detour, really. We just see them really get started because Imani and Marcus check in as team number four.

Lawrence and Zach are team number five. And Jeremy and Sandy didn't U-turn anyone. Yeah, that was kind of surprising to you. Yeah. So nobody got U-turned on that double U-turn. Yeah. Well, Amani and Marcus did, but not really.

And then Justin and Jennifer are team number seven. And they are eliminated, which we're not surprised because last step episode was a non-elimination. and it was a double U-turn.

Like or is this the like some some teams make that like really part of their story right and it it was just kind of like a passing comment yeah I think this was the first time we heard that yeah and we're not trying to say like and they make it their whole personality no it's just it's just like sometimes it's brought up at the very beginning and like yeah it like is talked about more often or just the way the show edits it yeah but yeah this is the first time they mentioned that and he said like I was so glad that I had somebody to feel safe to come out to and she was so supportive and stuff like that and she said I'm so glad he felt that way and I love him and stuff like that so they do love each other they just don't communicate the best way and um but I like other than Lawrence I like all the other teams that are in right now like I like everybody yeah yeah

So they took third. Their worst placement was leg two. They took eighth out of 11. Then they took fourth, second, fourth, second, and then this last one, seventh out of seven. So um they actually had the highest racing average of a team that came in seventh place without winning any legs.

Well, it's like they're always going to be siblings. Yeah. So they um Jennifer has a Facebook that she hasn't posted on since 2018. That's eight years ago. So we're not even going to look at that. um Her Instagram is private. However, Justin has an Instagram that he's pretty active on. And it looks like just for the 4th of July, they went as a family to Palm Springs, which oh why? Yeah.

It's been 107 degrees today the last couple of days here in utah it's like record-breaking isn't it yeah and like i saw something on threads today that was like um a plane that tried to land at the salt lake city airport and they couldn't because it was too hot that's crazy like there are cities that are hotter but it's like the temperature combined with the elevation makes it unsafe to land planes at like a certain temperature Interesting. I didn't know that. Yeah, I didn't either.
