Eric's Return and New Beginnings

Hello, and welcome to Comically Pedantic, where we take a detailed look at the complicated concepts, characters, and history of comic book culture. I'm your host, Eric L. Chase, and it's been quite a while since I've been here to record, and part of the reason why is that here has changed.

I've moved. And so normally this would be where I would introduce my guests and my subject for the show, but I didn't really think it was that appropriate to come back from a hiatus without at least touching on why that hiatus actually happened and what will be different moving forward.

So first, let's get some stuff out of the way. It wasn't my intention to disappear without much in the way of any sort of acknowledgement. And for that, I do have to apologize.

I mean, the world kind of fell apart around me and that includes watching the world's reaction to the election and the armed insurrection at the Capitol building. For those non-US based listeners, and I know there are a couple, I don't really know how to describe what that feels like to watch. I mean, I know that there are some episodes that I've written or recorded well before the election. So you'll hear some of me talking about it in a little bit of detail and at least I think one of them, but

It's a big deal. And I don't want this to be an entirely political podcast in the strictest sense of the word, but I do acknowledge that art and storytelling and even my opinions are inherently political.

In case it hasn't been made clear by my Twitter feed or what I've spoken about on the show already, I am very much a leftist.

I hold certain values and that kind of seasons how I look at the world and seeing people die, seeing the mob storm the Capitol and seeing how fascism has become a more present danger than probably ever before in America takes a huge emotional toll on myself and the people that I love. I do want to say that I hope the best for those that are out there living with any sort of emotional pain, either from their experience or the loss of a loved one.

But like I said, I don't want this show to become completely political. This is a fun place where I get to focus my energy into studying and the world of comics and report it back to my guests and to the listeners.
Balancing Life's Challenges

And I do want fun to be a big part of it. I found myself just running into stressful issues while doing the last few shows, which took too much time to fix. There are some strange audio issues in past episodes, and I've had trouble with finding time for some of my guests. Or at least, you know, finding our schedules in a place where they would fit together.
00:02:53
Speaker
And until recently I didn't have anything resembling a set schedule for myself and no small part due to COVID and needing to maintain a heavy work intensive life. So it was kind of impossible to make those schedules meet. I also happened to be taking classes while working two jobs and doing the writing for this show. So time is a precious commodity to me. I found myself needing a break and around that time,

I was also given the opportunity to work on a comic anthology with some truly talented people. So I found myself splitting my time between schoolwork and comics and it was just way too much. So I took a step back and I figured I would find time and I would do everything in my power to make sure that things worked out well. And then the time came for me to move and I found an opportunity that I couldn't pass up.

I'm in an entirely different place now, recording in a makeshift studio, in my own house. So as things started moving forward, we decided that we were going to start packing.
00:03:59
Speaker
We ran into issues, which ran into more issues, which ran into more and more and more. I mean, some of my friends even caught COVID. Things just kept getting pushed back. And it got to a point where it seemed like the easiest and best method to move forward would have to be to take the time, do some writing, get settled, and get the studio up and running so that at least when I came back, I would have a working schedule and a working show.
Future Plans and Audience Engagement
00:04:25
Speaker
So, I mean, starting now, I'm planning a slightly different release schedule and doubling down on my writing and recording. I'll have plenty of fun episodes and more opportunities to laugh while I unpack a lot of research, but I'll also have some changes in what I'll be addressing. For one, I'm planning on a deeper dive into Comixgate. And its origins. I'll be doing this sporadically, so I'll be updating the show as I move further into my own investigation. But I want to make something clear.
00:04:54
Speaker
I don't want any sort of harassment, either towards me, towards listeners, or in the other direction. I've had my own experience with ComicsGate, and I can say that they were handled better than some of the others that I've seen. It was called minimal amounts of names. Some of what was discussed in these moments are going to be starting points in my investigation, since there seemed to be a lot of misinformation being provided. But that's all to come.

It's very difficult for me to self-promote, so I feel the need to apologize every time I do this, but the show does take a very long time to produce, and I'm doing it largely by myself. You might hear my cats or my dog in the background, but it's just me besides them. That's all for this episode, though. This little update on the state of affairs

was needed a long time ago, but I'm glad I at least got this out now. And we will be back. And until then, you can find more exciting adventures at your local comic shop.
