Today we will learn the story of Joseph. This part of God's Big Story reminds us that God is with us, taking care of us during good time and hard times.

Parents, want to keep talking? Here are some ideas:

  • For ages 2-4: Sing the following song to the tune of “The Farmer in the Dell”.
God takes care of me, God takes care of me! God took care of Joseph, and God takes care of me!
  • For ages 5-9: Has anything unfair ever happened to you? How did you feel?
  • For ages 10-12: Ask, What can you learn from Joseph about trusting God’s plan?

One last thing!  This week, Hannah asked you to talk about how God takes care of you. Send in your kid's answer by texting a voice memo to 636-280-5433 and they could be featured in next week's episode!  *By sending in a voice memo, you’re providing consent for your minor’s voice to be on the podcast*

April asked you to tell us about a time when you were scared and needed to trust God. Here are the stories you shared with us. Whenever I was younger and I went on my first roller coaster with my dad. When I was like um younger and um I didn't want to go to school and my mom would drop me off and I didn't want to get out of a car and I said to myself it was going to be okay because God's with me. When I first rode my bike

Dreams in the Bible and Nature

00:01:03
Speaker
Today, we're going to hear some fun facts that give you a clue about today's Bible story. Let's hear from an awesome kid with some super fun facts about dreams.
00:01:14
Speaker
It's time for Shafu Bats. My name is Stella, and I'm seven years old. We dream every night, but we often don't remember them. animals dream too. Scientists have found that armadillos have lots of dream activity. You can learn while you dream. I think dreams are just so interesting. I mean, how cool is it that God designed our brains to dream while we're sleeping?
00:01:43

Have you ever had any weird or funny dreams? I know I definitely have. And dreams play a big role in the Bible story today, so let's jump in.

Joseph's Journey Begins

00:01:54
Speaker
Our story is about a man named Joseph. Not like Mary and Joseph had a baby named Jesus, a different Joseph. And when we meet him, he is in a pit.
00:02:04
Speaker
That's right, like a hole in the ground. So you might be wondering, how did he get there? Well, his brothers threw him in. Okay, let's rewind a little bit. You see, Joseph had 11 brothers. Whoa, that's a big family and they did not all get along because You see, Joseph's dad loved him the most out of all of the kids. For example, the Bible even tells us that Joseph's dad gave him a very special gift, a beautiful, expensive, colorful coat. As you can imagine, this made his brothers pretty jealous because they didn't get a special gift like that.
00:02:46
Speaker
And on top of that, Joseph also started having some interesting dreams. It was dreams about him ruling over his brothers and his whole family. This made Joseph's brothers even angrier and more jealous of him. In fact,

From Slave to Prisoner

they were so furious that one day they threw him into a dark pit. That hole in the ground.
00:03:08
Speaker
Oh man, if I was Joseph, I think I'd be pretty frustrated and scared and maybe even hurt. Ow, I wonder if it would hurt to fall into a big pit. Well, anyways, they may have left him there forever, except a group of travelers were passing by. They were traveling from Egypt and the brothers decided to sell Joseph to be a servant.
00:03:31
Speaker
Well, I don't think it's a good idea to sell your sibling, but that's really what happened. I bet Joseph was so confused and hurt and just probably sad. So when Joseph got to Egypt, he was a servant to a man named Potiphar. He was a very important, rich guy. And so Joseph worked really hard to be a good worker.
00:03:55
Speaker
In fact, Joseph did such a good job that Potiphar put him in charge of his whole household. As we'll see in Joseph's story, there's a lot of ups and downs. Good times, hard times, bad times, happy times. And all throughout the whole story, God is with Joseph. So he went from being thrown in a pit, sold into slavery, to now being in charge of a whole household. That was really cool. Except... One day, Joseph was blamed for something that he did not do. In fact, someone told a lie about him and Potiphar sent him straight to prison. Oh no. But in prison, Joseph actually worked very hard and became in charge of all of the prisoners. Man, back and forth, up and down, there's a lot of twists and turns in this story.

Joseph's Rise to Power

00:04:52
Speaker
While Joseph was in prison, God gave him a special knowledge about dreams. There were two prisoners that were having some really weird, interesting dreams and God helped Joseph understand the dreams and told the men what they meant. This special ability even got Joseph out of prison because a couple of years later, Egypt's ruler, kind of like a king, but called a pharaoh. Can you say pharaoh?
00:05:22
Speaker
this Pharaoh had a really weird interesting dream and no one could tell him what it meant until someone say, hey, I remember there's a prisoner that knows about dreams. Let's ask him. So they called Joseph out of prison. And because God was with Joseph and helped him have this special ability, he was able to tell Pharaoh what his dream meant.
00:05:44
Speaker
Which is a really good thing because this dream was telling Pharaoh that there were going to be some hard years in their country. There was going to be lots of years where they didn't have any food and so Pharaoh was pretty worried about that.
00:06:00
Speaker
But again, God gave Joseph this special ability to come up with a plan, a plan to make sure everyone would have enough food. Pharaoh was so impressed with Joseph, he pulled him out of prison and put him in charge of the whole country. Oh my goodness, isn't that amazing? Joseph went from being thrown in a pit to thrown in prison to being in charge of the whole country of Egypt.
00:06:28
Speaker
God took care of him no matter what was happening. During the good times, during the bad times, Joseph could trust that God was with him and was working things out for good. In fact, many years later, Joseph was able to give his family and his brothers the food they needed.
00:06:50
Speaker
He was able to give them the food and also to forgive them for throwing him into a pit that long time ago. With God's help and love, Joseph did amazing things and helped lots of people. So

Reflecting on Divine Trust

00:07:06
Speaker
let's get to the point. God took care of Joseph. God takes care of me too. God did take care of Joseph through all of the ups and downs, good and bad times.
00:07:17
Speaker
and He takes care of you just the same. We can trust Him no matter what is happening in our lives. We can trust Him because He loves us with a great big love. So here's what I want you to talk about with your family.
00:07:36
Speaker
How does God take care of you? Discuss it together and then tell us what you talked about. We'd love to get a voice memo from you, so go to normalgoesalongway.com for the instructions of how you can send in your voice and you might be featured on next week's episode.
