Today we will learn about explorers sent into God's promised land.  Some responded in great fear, but Caleb and Joshua demonstrated great courage and faith!

Parents, want to keep talking? Here are some ideas:

*Ten explorers were scared. Tell about a time when you were scared.  Joshua and Caleb had courage.  Tell about a time when you had courage (ages 2-4)

*By focusing on earthly things, the 10 explorers were too scared to trust God.  What are some things in your life that scare you?  How can you overcome that fear? (ages 5-9)

*The Israelites chose to listen to the ten fearful explorers, instead of Joshua and Caleb--who trusted God.  Because of that, they missed out on the fruits of God's promises. Name a time that you followed worldly advice.  What was the consequence? Talk about a time when you followed God despite strong opposition.  What happened? (ages 10-12)

One last thing!  This week, April asked you, "How is life better when we trust God?".  Send in your kid's answer by texting a voice memo to 636-280-5433 and they could be featured in next week's episode!  *By sending in a voice memo, you’re providing consent for your minor’s voice to be on the podcast*

Fun facts about fruits

00:00:47
Speaker
Today we'll hear from an awesome kid with super fun facts about fruit.
00:00:55
Speaker
It's time for some fun facts! My name is Olivia. I'm eight years old and I'm in third grade. A pomegranate fruit can have up to 1,400 seeds inside.
00:01:07
Speaker
Kiwis used to be called Chinese gooseberries. Strawberries are the only fruit that have seeds on the outside. When I was a little girl, I loved kiwi. Kiwi was my favorite fruit and I would often get kiwis in my stocking at Christmas, which made me so happy.
00:01:25
Speaker
do you have a favorite fruit that makes you super happy? Well, fruit comes into our story today, but not quite yet. I need to set the stage for you first.

God's people in the wilderness

00:01:36
Speaker
God's people were in a time of waiting.
00:01:40
Speaker
They were living in the wilderness, traveling from place to place. They were waiting for God to lead them into the special land that he had promised them. Is there anybody out there that loves to wait?
00:01:53
Speaker
I feel like the answer is probably no. Most people don't like waiting. It's not very fun to wait in a line, wait for dinner to be made, wait for your birthday to finally come. And God's people were like

Moses sends explorers to Canaan

00:02:09
Speaker
us. They didn't love waiting.
00:02:11
Speaker
And they were waiting for a long, long time to get to this promised land. Years and years. After lots of traveling, God's people finally reached the edge of Canaan, the land that God had promised his people.
00:02:26
Speaker
These tired travelers were so excited because their long journey was almost over. Moses called the people together and said, before we go into this promised land, we need to send some explorers in so we can find out what it is like.
00:02:43
Speaker
An explorer is a person who goes to a place that they have never gone to before. Moses chose 12 explorers and he told them, go into the land.
00:02:53
Speaker
We want to know what it looks like. Is the soil good for planting food? Are there trees? What about the people? Are they strong or weak? What are the towns like?
00:03:04
Speaker
Come back and tell us all about it.

Explorers' report on Canaan

00:03:07
Speaker
The 12 explorers packed up and went to the new land. They explored for 40 days. Everybody gathered around to hear what they had to say when they got back.
00:03:18
Speaker
One explorer said, the land is awesome. The soil is great for planting. Taste these wonderful fruits that we found. He started passing out grapes, pomegranates, and figs.
00:03:30
Speaker
This got the people very excited, yum. It was so good to know that they would have delicious food to eat in their new land. But then the mood changed. Moses asked, what about the people in the land? What are they like?
00:03:44
Speaker
The explorers started looking fearful. One said, they make me really nervous. I don't think we can go there. The cities are huge and they have tall walls around them.
00:03:56
Speaker
The people are big and strong. Some of them look like giants. This was bad news for God's people. They started to worry. Some of the Israelites said, oh no, we should have just stayed in Egypt.
00:04:10
Speaker
That would have been better.

Caleb and Joshua's trust in God

00:04:12
Speaker
But two explorers, Caleb and Joshua, were not afraid. They trusted God and they told the people, listen, we can do this.
00:04:22
Speaker
We do not need to be afraid. God is on our side. i want to tell you that God's people agreed with Caleb and Joshua. After all, God had been wonderful to his people, right?
00:04:34
Speaker
He had led them away from terrible Egypt. He had split the Red Sea right down the middle so that they could be safe. He had been with them every step of the way in the wilderness.

Doubt and God's delay

00:04:45
Speaker
Even though God had been so good to his people, they did not believe Caleb and Joshua. They were full of fear. God was angry with the people.
00:04:57
Speaker
Why couldn't they trust him? Moses pleaded with God to forgive the people. God agreed to forgive the people, but he did not allow his people to enter the land for another 40 years.

Believing in God's promises

00:05:11
Speaker
So let's get to the point. Joshua and Caleb believed in God's promise. I can believe in God's promise too. Today with your family, I want you to answer this question.
00:05:22
Speaker
How is life better when we trust God?
