00:00:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
We're bringing you a bonus episode. We couldn't hear Sean the last 15 minutes, so that recording got all screwed up. We dropped it anyway, and everybody was very quick to point out the audio difficulties with Sean's mic. So we said, shit, we got to give the people what they want.
00:01:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
We'll give them another episode. We'll drop it. Tuesday. So here we are, Steve, Rick James, the whole crew.
Introduction to Nick Alvarela & Advanced Drilling
00:01:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
We got b Brian Zervinski back with us. We have...
00:01:17
The SnowJobs Podcast

00:01:25
All About Green LLC
Thank you.
00:01:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
He's out of ah Hampton, New Jersey. He owns Advanced Drilling. They have a snow operation that has scaled pretty incredibly, actually, in the last five years. So we brought Nick on just in case Sean craps out again so we'll have somebody else to talk to.
00:01:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
So that's what we're going to do. We're giving you a little bonus episode.
Business Expansion into Snow Operations
00:01:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's 161.2 or whatever, 0.5, whatever you want to call it. But all in all, we're we're back. We're back with you again today. So welcome, boys. How are we?
00:02:02
The SnowJobs Podcast

00:02:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
You mess up one more recording and you're on a six-month ban.
00:02:14
All About Green LLC
Thank you.
00:02:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's how it goes.
00:02:19
Native Snow
Whatever. your Your fucking views will be down.
00:02:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
Whatever. ah He has no fear. He has no fear of a ban.
00:02:27
RICK JAMES
There's no Shani. He don't care.
00:02:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well, Nick's a first-time guest on the show. So, Nick, why don't you tell us a little about
Managing Diverse Clientele & Environmental Impacts
00:02:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
advanced drilling? Give us the rundown of your company there, and and we'll get off to the races.
00:02:39
Nick
Yeah, sure. So um basically, we're a 30-year family-run drilling business. We service the entire state of New Jersey, almost half of Pennsylvania, and we go into northern Delaware for environmental water well drilling. So we service like a global clientele. It's pharmaceutical, oil, gas, just kind of your large players that โ you know have uh environmental impacts as property passes through hands and that's kind of what fuels our fire with our drilling business um a couple years ago we we really you know as i kind of came from field into office i really started noticing that same type of like generational shift where field staff on from our consultants that we were are working for you know, they're they're scheduling less and less field work and drilling work in the wintertime.
Strategic Sub-Contracting & Growth
00:03:28
Nick
They have global budgets. They just need to spend a certain amount of money per year. And they've they've really kind of transitioned to scheduling more field work and large scale drilling projects, spring, summer, and fall, because not a lot of people like working in the winter. And so kind of tied in nicely with launching advanced snow management.
00:03:46
Nick
um And we've kind of really just scaled that Rapidly, honestly, the first couple of years we we took it slow, nice and easy, strategically subbed out for a couple of players in our area.
00:03:59
Nick
you know, first we were doing HOAs, then I subbed for a guy who was doing office complexes and then and then ultimately really put myself where I wanted to be with the snow business and started subbing for a guy who did more industrial.
00:04:12
Nick
And that's kind of where we we found our place. and And then last year, we just kind of exploded
Equipment Strategy & Uniformity
00:04:17
Nick
with it. We did a ah large unit order with Case. um and And just kind of honestly never looked back at that point.
00:04:24
Nick
So, you know, here we are.
00:04:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
Pedal down.
00:04:28
Nick
yep all gas It's kind of my mantra is all gas, no brakes.
00:04:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
Pedal down.
00:04:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's it. That's literally every snow guy.
00:04:33
Nick
no No rear view mirror.
00:04:35
Nick
yeah no rear No rear view.
00:04:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
Every snow guy after he gets done with a winner, right? We all sit there and say, is my headache big enough? No, no. Let's take on more shit next year.
00:04:43
RICK JAMES
go. Yeah, hold on we'll figure it out as we go.
00:04:44
Nick
Dude, my, my, want one of my, one of my main guys just started sending me today.
00:04:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's it.
00:04:49
Nick
He started sending me plowing videos of a tool cat plowing snow. I'm like, dude, you are sick in the head. I'm like, dude, we if we have like so almost 60 inches of snow down in some of our markets and you're still sending me plowing videos on YouTube.
Specialization in Large Industrial Sites
00:05:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
they're in it they're in it that's good man uh good for them they're still in it after this kind of winter because uh man guys are ground down in the northeast
00:05:15
Nick
it's been ah It's been a winter.
00:05:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
that's cool so what what kind of sites are you guys specializing in now you said you kind of specialized the last couple years
00:05:23
Nick
Yeah, so we we're pretty much strictly doing all industrial.
00:05:23
All About Green LLC
Thank
00:05:27
Nick
I've basically set kind of like um after this winter, we're basically setting or guess I guess kind of I'm setting an eight to ten acre minimum.
00:05:37
Nick
if if if If you don't have essentially sweet spot is eight and a half enough, but if if you don't have anything more than eight eight acres to service, then we're just not going to be a a good fit for you.
00:05:49
Nick
so that's kind of where we're um targeting so it's it's all large industrial i mean um lot of trucking terminals and stuff
00:05:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
Very cool. And you said you got a lot of case equipment now?
00:06:01
Nick
yeah we're running about 30 loaders at this point um mostly all case i do have a couple kubotas um mixed in there and um
00:06:13
Nick
I don't know. I love the Kubota skids, so I can't say enough good things about that. But it's mostly case. and um' I am trying to keep it very much uniform because it's very easy for for servicing. I mean, all all your case skids and your 321s, they all take the same filters, the same oils.
00:06:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:06:29
Nick
The capacities are similar. it It makes it very easy to scale. So that's kind of what we're running with.
00:06:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
Same water and fuel sensors.
00:06:38
RICK JAMES
Dave Big big load big loaders to or just the skids and minis. Dave Kuntz,
00:06:42
Nick
Yep, I have a couple 521s, but mostly 621s.
00:06:47
Nick
And then we're running all Artics with those and really started getting into the double downs too.
00:06:53
Nick
So I'm running i run in three one-yard double downs and I'm running three three-yard double downs.
00:07:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
Cool.
00:07:00
Nick
So, yeah, I love them, dude, honestly.
00:07:01
RICK JAMES
You like of those.
00:07:03
Nick
i They're great. um And even those, they were they were pretty smart when they set up the one yards and the three yards.
00:07:08
All About Green LLC
Thank
00:07:11
Nick
All the hydraulic motors are the same. So if you have, all I need to do is stock a few motors, and and they're pretty cheap, four or five hundred bucks a motor. So if I have any issues, you can just swap them out.
00:07:21
Nick
And they're a lot โ all the spinners and motors and stuff, they're all interchangeable. So it's very simple. So it doesn't matter if I have a one-yard or three-yard issue with any of them.
00:07:32
Nick
It's a quick change-out. So we've only had one motor go bad over the last two years. So nice and easy. Just a seal that went bad, and i was like, i'm not I'm not playing this game.
00:07:42
Nick
I just popped it off, popped a new one on, and had that one rebuilt, put it back on the shelf. Sure.
00:07:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:07:48
RICK JAMES
What do you, did you get them right through case or do you go through the nest or what did you get?
00:07:52
Nick
Um, so my local case dealership, we set them up when we started doing the order, the, uh, the orders. Um, I had them get set up as a, as an Arctic dealer.
00:08:05
Nick
So everything has been run through case basically, um,
00:08:09
Nick
I guess it's like six in one he and half dozen in the other. it's kind of one in the same. So everything's been run through my dealership. So basically now when I'm ordering 621s, they're coming with HD 17s, three-yard double downs, and that's how I'm bringing in every 621 is just a standard order.
00:08:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
cool no not yet
00:08:27
Nick
No snow tires. I don't have snow. i have one I have one loader with snow tires on it.
00:08:30
All About Green LLC
New Jersey.
Geographical Coverage & Strategic Scaling
00:08:36
RICK JAMES
Yeah, that's what I'd take.
00:08:36
Nick
Dude, i the the clients that we're working for, we use so much salt, it doesn't even matter. yeah know You don't need snow tires.
00:08:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
and you and you're pushing artics and you're pushing artics though
00:08:43
RICK JAMES
there's a salt shortage. thought there's a salt shortage.
00:08:46
Nick
Nah, no salt sugars.
00:08:47
All About Green LLC
grounds, the grounds is not cold enough out of here for it. You don't need it.
00:08:50
Nick
I mean, this winter it was, but man, I tell you what, they...
00:08:52
RICK JAMES
Beg to differ.
00:08:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
You're still pre-treating, right? So you're pre-treating, you're pushing an Arctic. There ain't much left that's going to cause slippage. They'll still be fine.
00:09:04
Nick
i havent I haven't even remotely experienced the need for snow tires personally.
00:09:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
Cool.
00:09:09
Nick
You know what i mean? And we're running, and like I said, we're running sites from Lehigh Valley to Newark to Philadelphia, and I haven't been in a spot where I'm like, man, I really wish I had snow tires.
00:09:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
Gotcha. Gotcha.
00:09:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
Cool. Who's your dealer? Who's your case dealer?
00:09:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
Gotcha. How are they?
00:09:28
Nick
I love them. I can't say enough good things about them.
00:09:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
Good.
00:09:30
Nick
Honestly, I could sit here and prop them up as high as i possibly could on my, so you know, my parts manager, service manager. They're great. the My parts guy, I went to high school with him.
00:09:41
Nick
We played sports our whole lives together. um And my service manager is the best. I, you know, they're on speed dial.
Sidewalk Snow Removal Techniques
00:09:49
Nick
So, but I had to, like, i yeah I, had to go into the order talent, you know, knowing that like, Hey, this is, this has to be a 24 seven,
00:09:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Very cool.
00:09:57
Nick
emergency service. Like if I'm going to order through you, you need to support me. And I'm telling you, man, if it's Sunday morning at 5 a.m., I'm calling Kyle.
00:10:02
The SnowJobs Podcast
Mm-hmm.
00:10:07
Nick
He's answering the phone. He's multiple times. They've met me after hours. Sunday mornings. I have a hose down. I've i've had hoses blow on you know like a a hydraulic gate spreader on a dump truck not even a case machine i'm like ka you got to come in and make me a host he goes what's it for i said it's for my salt truck all just give me 20 minutes i'll be there you know so just we figure it out you know they're they they're great you know so
00:10:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
We've heard that. We've heard that from the Pennsylvania guys. Power Co. is very, very good. So good good for Power Co.
00:10:37
All About Green LLC
I just started using them for some stuff this year. They've been awesome. It's a little far for me to get out there, but they're they've been great for everything.
00:10:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's awesome. Good to hear.
00:10:46
Native Snow
They got a place in Jersey now.
00:10:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
Good for Power Co.
00:10:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
They do.
00:10:50
Nick
Yeah, right in Clinton.
00:10:51
All About Green LLC
Yeah, it's in Clinton. That's the one I've been going to.
00:10:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
Dynamite drop-in, Sean.
00:10:57
Native Snow
I don't know.
00:10:59
All About Green LLC
Just a ball of information.
00:11:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
terrible.
00:11:01
Native Snow
I don't know.
00:11:02
Native Snow
what they I don't know when they opened.
00:11:03
Native Snow
what Where did you order from, Nick?
00:11:05
Nick
Yeah, Clinton. Yeah, they've been open for a while. um
00:11:08
Nick
Honestly, they're literally less than one mile from my shop. So whenever, if my big loaders need service or if I need something, backhoe, anything, I'll just drive the loaders right down the road, right to the dealership, drop them off, pick them up.
00:11:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
And are they, PowerCo, correct me if I'm wrong, PowerCo is also the the case dealer for like the Lehigh Valley.
00:11:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, I mean, they got to be a good dealer.
00:11:30
Nick
So they have, they have.
00:11:30
All About Green LLC
Thank
00:11:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
They're supporting a lot of machines out there that are doing a lot of industrial sites.
00:11:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
So they kind of have to have their shit together. So it's good to hear that they do.
00:11:40
Nick
Yeah, no, they're they're great.
00:11:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's awesome.
00:11:42
Native Snow
They also do XCMG.
00:11:43
Native Snow
That's why I was asking because bought mine out of Pennsylvania, the Lehigh Valley area, I guess. So I didn't really know about the Jersey dealership until this year when we had a problem.
00:11:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Got you.
00:11:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right. Have you needed them for the XCMG?
00:11:57
Native Snow
A couple times. Yeah, a couple times.
00:11:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:11:58
Native Snow
Just stupid things, yeah.
00:12:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
10-4. Cool. What other questions you got for him, Jay?
00:12:06
RICK JAMES
No, i so you said you're more into industrial sites now, Nick, that's what your bread and butter is. That's where you're aiming for.
00:12:12
Nick
Yeah. So that's what, mean, we're doing a bunch of Amazon sites. um That's basically like kind of like where we want to be. It's just large scale industrial.
00:12:23
Nick
Like I said, we're we're setting moving forward like an eight and a half acre minimum, but most of my sites are 20, 25 acres. There one, 1.2 million square foot facilities.
00:12:33
Nick
um And that's kind of really where where we want to be. That's what we're targeting moving forward.
00:12:39
RICK JAMES
How about, are you subbing a lot still besides, you know, the the Amazon, stuff like that?
00:12:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
Cool.
00:12:46
RICK JAMES
Or you kind of go off on your own now?
00:12:49
Nick
Um, so I'm still subbing, for someone, but then obvious then all of my contracts, I don't sub anything out to anyone. We're all in house. So, um, you know, we're running all of our own equipment, all of our own guys.
00:13:02
Nick
Um, pretty hefty seasonal workforce. Uh,
00:13:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
nice
00:13:06
RICK JAMES
How many guys are running total on this?
00:13:07
Nick
ah hunt this This winter we're running 130 guys, 30 loaders and like 10 salt trucks. And then obviously we got all the salt buckets too that are supporting the the salting operations. So...
00:13:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
What are you running for sidewalk machines?
00:13:24
Nick
So we just started really getting into the sidewalks. um I have three snow Raiders. um I have a Bobcat L23 with a broom on it.
00:13:34
Nick
i mean, I love that little thing, but if you don't have enough volume for it, it's like such an underutilized little wheel loader.
00:13:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:13:41
Nick
But um the guy who runs that, I mean, he loves that thing.
00:13:44
Nick
I mean, you could a site with like 40, 50,000 square feet of sidewalk. That's like that's its wheelhouse. Like you really want to be in because that little loader will do seven miles an hour. And you keep up with it as it's kind of the snow's dusting down.
00:13:57
Nick
You get a nice, light, dry snow. I mean, you could just destroy a massive quantity of sidewalks with that thing. um And then other than that, just kind of shovelers. So we're running at this point four sidewalks.
00:14:12
Nick
You know, ah industrial sites don't have a crazy amount of sidewalk. It's more or less kind of like how can you take your side sidewalk equipment and kind of like implement it into like the trailer yards really.
00:14:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
Mm-hmm. Sure.
00:14:23
Nick
So, you know, um it's our our biggest pain
Challenges in Trailer Yard Snow Management
00:14:28
Nick
point is not so much sidewalks. It's like, how do you manage trailer yards that have at a minimum 1,000 trailers in them? um And that's kind of like where we're really starting to toy with like more expensive like dual-stage snowblowers or i don't know, the SR mags are just โ they're too big, you know, they're just too big of a machine to try and stuff between trailers.
00:14:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
It don't
00:14:51
Nick
But guys are saying, no, they work, they're, they're using them. But I mean, it's, it's a pretty hefty investment to drop 20 grand on a sidewalk machine and then come to find out like, it's a little too close for comfort.
00:15:02
The SnowJobs Podcast
don't work.
00:15:03
Nick
You know, it's a little too close for comfort.
00:15:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:15:05
Nick
So, um, that's what we're kind of toying with.
00:15:09
All About Green LLC
You can go two for one with the Scouts instead. Although you don't have the blower option, that's only problem.
00:15:15
Nick
I mean, that's, that's the thing. It's like, I would love to put an SR mag with a blower, two of them per trailer yard and run them between the trailers. But, know, like I said, it's very, very expensive.
Adapting to Client Needs & Geographic Focus
00:15:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
How does that work?
00:15:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
Do they just keep the trailers there the whole time or do they eventually move them out and let you clear what what stuff you couldn't get to?
00:15:34
Nick
No, they stay, dude. They they stay.
00:15:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
I stay.
00:15:36
Nick
these These distribution centers, they run... i mean, they did shut down for our two big storms that we've had. they did They did end up having closures, but I mean... You know, that the last one we just had, the blizzard, um you know, it stopped snowing at, I mean, you guys could probably jump in. I mean, it stops, the heavy snow stopped around 10 a.m. Monday morning.
00:15:57
Nick
You know, we still had lingering light snow until about 2. We had full openings by, some facilities were 5 p.m., 6 p.m. None of them opened any later than 7, full opening.
00:16:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
I'm his money. Yep.
00:16:10
Nick
So, yeah. You know, we basically just busted butt to make sure that the employee lots were open, all your main scope work was open, and then the it was right into like digging out the tractors and then dude right into the trailers, you know, they got to move.
00:16:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
Sure.
00:16:28
Nick
So it's just nonstop.
00:16:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
Gotcha. Cool. What's, what's your average snowfall where you are there in Hampton, New Jersey every year?
00:16:37
Nick
Um, so we're, we're basically, we share like the Eastern PA. we're like 32 on a 30 year, 32, 34. thirty two thirty four Um, i think our 10 year has dropped to like maybe 27, 28 in that range.
00:16:49
All About Green LLC
Thank you.
00:16:52
Nick
Um, but honestly, I don't really service a whole lot right in my immediate area. You know, I, I used to do a lot of stuff. I started close by our shop and everything. And then, um,
00:17:04
Nick
I basically dumped everything in my immediate area and just kind of grown with client needs. So
00:17:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
Gotcha. You got what else you you got, Jay? Got anything else?
00:17:16
RICK JAMES
I mean, that's pretty much told us everything pretty quickly about his company. It sounds like a really great company that's growing pretty fast. I mean, it's that's ah that's a very competitive area he's in there, too. It seems sounds like, you know that little area.
00:17:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
There is, but they're putting 10 of those buildings up every month.
00:17:31
RICK JAMES
It's true. They put lot of buildings there.
00:17:36

It's wild.

RICK JAMES
I wish we had those buildings around here because those look โ I'm not going to โ to me, those

Just the last three years of going to Storks, every time we go out there along the route, there's four or five more industrial centers being built or already built that weren't there the year before.
00:18:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
like They're everywhere.
00:18:26
Nick
and And most time developers are trying to get their bang for their buck.
00:18:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
so That's it.
00:18:29
Nick
So they're going to, you know, you're going to buy a 30, 50, 60 acre property and you're going to try and squeeze two or three of them in there. You know what i mean? You're going to to really try and you know, whether it's a subdivide and build three or, you know, try and cram two and claim it as a logistics park, you know, whatever.
00:18:43
Nick
But they they got it figured out.
00:18:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
Gotcha. So how did you make out with the with the big blizzard that we already talked to sean and Brian about briefly before sean fucked everything up?
Managing Major Blizzard Challenges
00:18:56
Nick
Yeah, I mean, as a whole, ah as a whole, we made out good. um You know, when it comes to actual operations, I'm not in the field anymore. um I manage from, you know, a computer screen. I call it, you know, if it's like star command. I don't know. it's It's literally like an emergency response command center. I've got four screens running.
00:19:20
Nick
um so I'm not in the field a whole lot but basically the last big storm we had in January I don't know how we went off without a hitch i didn't have any issues but this past big storm we had and here's something new that I'm finding out and the guys that are running case loaders I got to figure this out with the case dealership but we had a the main feed line on a 321 blue going to the coupler and how the couplers are plumbed on a case 321 that if your coupler loses pressure your pins pop open
00:19:54
RICK JAMES
cause some pressure.
00:19:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
hmm yeah it unlocks
00:19:59
Nick
That is crazy. To me, that's insane.
00:20:00
Nick
Like I'm used to drill rigs and heavy equipment with double piloted check valves where if you lose system pressure, like there's no way you're losing a cylinder, a jack, a pin.
00:20:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah hmm yeah
00:20:10
Nick
I mean, to me, that's insanity that you lose pressure to your coupler and your pins pop open. I mean, that's a great way for someone to get seriously hurt. So I got a phone call.
00:20:21
Nick
it Probably 11, 30, 12 o'clock when the storm really started ripping.
00:20:26
Nick
have a site, an Amazon site, North Philadelphia. Lost a hose. A guy was pushing into the pile. Pins popped open.
00:20:38
Nick
Whatever happened, it ended up bending my skid plate on a LD 13.5. So, quick call...
00:20:45
Nick
so quick call My dad runs another service truck. So I called my dad. He got his stuff together. i i jumped in a different service truck. We both kind of started making our way down to the site.
00:20:59
Nick
Was able to secure emergency service even during a blizzard. Perotek, Perotek. I mean, hats off to that company. I guess they're kind of like a chain. But dude was there. They said they they guarantee an hour response or less.
00:21:14
Nick
Dude was there in 40 minutes in the middle of a blizzard.
00:21:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
Really? What was the name of the company?
00:21:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right.
00:21:20
Native Snow
Yeah, we we use them also.
00:21:20
All About Green LLC
Yeah, I tried to, it's funny, I tried to use them, Nick.
00:21:21
RICK JAMES
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:21:23
All About Green LLC
They didn't answer me. And they said the same thing on the call. They said, we'll call you back in 20 minutes and for an emergency. I called three different locations and not ah nobody called me back.
00:21:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
Hmm.
00:21:33
Nick
Yeah, dude. ah So I must have lucked out. I must have lucked out big time. So I called, dude called me back. You know, I'm thinking worst case, like this dude isn't going to call me back. I'm thinking the whole time. I brought a whole cap and plug set. I'm like, dude, I'll just cap the line, run into the coupler. I'll try and beat the pins back down and I should be good. But I didn't realize that without system pressure, those pins wouldn't stay down.
00:21:55
Nick
So luckily the guy, the guy answered, showed up, man. It was 40 minutes. So by the time I got there, he was pulling in too, ripped the hose off, built a new hose in the back.
00:22:03
Nick
We brought five gallons of hydro oil. Wasn't enough. I needed seven. He actually had a pail of 46 weight in the van with him, filled it back up.
00:22:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep. Mm-hmm.
00:22:12
Nick
And then, so he was good. We're in and out, machines back up and running. But now I have a bent skid plate on the pusher. I'm like, You know, the the the tabs on the top, the angle iron that holds in, you know basically your front, that's all bent up.
00:22:25
RICK JAMES
Yeah, popped up.
00:22:28
Nick
So, you know, luckily we had torches on the service truck. so we're firing up a rosebud. We're heating up that skid plate, put the machine back in there, and we heated that thing up cherry red.
00:22:35
RICK JAMES
Beat her down.
00:22:38
Nick
And I'm beating it with a sledge, and we just beat it back down over top of, you know, the the adapter on the machine. You know, hour later, we're we're up and running.
00:22:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
nice
00:22:48
All About Green LLC
Oh, yeah.
00:22:48
Nick
So he's he's he was off.
00:22:50
RICK JAMES
Been there, done that.
00:22:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
that was a 321 yeah that is so weird because it it seems like that's the exact opposite of what you would expect you have something catastrophic go you lose system pressure on the hydro you would expect the pins to remain locked in place nothing like the whole machine to lock down basically
00:22:52
Nick
So, yeah, 321. Yeah, three twenty one
00:23:09
Nick
the The valve body that controls the pins up front must not be like a double piloted check valve. Like there's no check valve. You lose system pressure, it it must
00:23:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
or it's Or maybe it got put in reverse. I don't know.
00:23:22
Nick
I don't know. Yeah. I mean, so so I actually had another machine do the same thing, but not in the middle of the night. It was the next morning after like main scope was cleaned up. They were just starting to use the machine, digging out trailers and whatever.
00:23:35
Nick
And I don't know if it's just from just this sheer amount of plowing we've done this winter, that just the amount of vibration and kind of like square footage of continuous plowing that some of these hoses have been...
00:23:37
All About Green LLC
Okay.
00:23:49
Nick
brittle the vibration because the hoses actually didn't blow they were breaking at the metal connectors right at the the ferrule or the whatever you call it right at the metal part right behind the the nut you know right on your hose so same thing happened on that loader too that hose blows a smaller line it was just a feed line from cylinder from uh from
00:23:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, right the flange. Yep. Yep.
00:24:13
Nick
pin to pin and then that popped open on me too. So I had two machines, two different locations, two different hoses blow and the pins popped open.
00:24:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
Hmm.
00:24:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
I knew when you said we brought five gallons of hydraulic fluid, I was shaking my head. I'm like, that ain't going cut it.
00:24:30
All About Green LLC
Thank you.
00:24:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
Because the funny thing about the 321 is it's got a bigger hydro tank than a fuel tank.
00:24:30
Nick
Nope. Nope. It would have been, it would have been. Yeah.
00:24:35
Nick
yeah ah yeah, it really does.
00:24:35
RICK JAMES
Yeah, no shit.
00:24:37
Nick
Yeah, it really does.
00:24:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah shit.
00:24:41
Nick
So other than that, that was the only other thing I had.
00:24:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
They have such tiny fuel tanks.
00:24:44
RICK JAMES
That's a bad spot, too.
00:24:46
Nick
The only other thing I had go wrong, honestly, was I didn't really think about this in the beginning of the season when I set all this stuff up for ah auxiliary fuel tanks and on all our sites. All of our sites have standalone fuel, but they're 12-volt, just 20-gallon-minute transfer tanks.
00:25:03
Nick
Well, I never thought to, like, label them. I never thought to, like, make it crystal clear that your 5 621 loaders run on system. Of course, nobody hooked it to the big loader because I've already said don't.
00:25:17
Nick
We've already run through a couple fuel pumps. so This is last storm, right? were We're into February, March. We've already blown a couple fuel pumps out, and I've already explained to the guys, all my crew leaders, do not hook at the fuel pump to any of the three-yard loaders.
00:25:33
Nick
I get a call right again. I'm already down the road. Thankfully, that guy called me. We don't have any fuel. The fuel pump's not working. i'm like,
00:25:42
Nick
did you hook it to the big machine no no no i would never do that we've already done that we've ah you told me not to do that i'm like well ah it worked and now it doesn't so whatever let's just get to how we fix it so thankfully i actually had a manual fuel pump in my shop an old school manual one so i'm like dude there's no way i'm going to source an electric fuel pump right now it's two o'clock in the morning we're in the middle of a state of emergency blizzard
00:25:59
RICK JAMES
The old school.
00:26:09
Nick
So I grabbed that, took that down with us, and then was able to swap the pump out, put a manual crank in, and it was back up and running. it So those are my two main things for the Blizzard was I had a machine go down, then we got back up and running, and we had an electric fuel pump go out that, you know, we we figured it out, so.
00:26:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
And what was your spread of snow that you got across your portfolio?
00:26:29
Nick
So Lehigh Valley ended up with about six inches of snow. Newark International, I have a site right down the road from the airport. They were recorded at 27 inches. And then my sites in North Philadelphia, we came in between 19 and 22.
00:26:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay, good snow.
00:26:49
Nick
So, um you know, ye yeah, yeah.
00:26:52
RICK JAMES
Good, good event.
00:26:54
Nick
A lot of our sites saw basically, basically two feet of snow.
00:27:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice.
00:27:01
RICK JAMES
How'd your crews handle it?
Team Dedication & Recruitment Strategy
00:27:05
Nick
Oh, man, they're the best, to be honest with you. They are not new to snow. They're not new to us. they They bring... Dude, because I have C-boxes on all my sites, right? So...
00:27:19
Nick
They literally will pull out. They'll get there early. They'll even get there earlier than when I tell them to get there. They empty the C box out. they'll They'll take the palletized material out. They'll push the fuel tanks off to the side. They'll pull the sidewalk equipment out. And they bring tables. They bring camping chairs.
00:27:35
Nick
And they set up griddles and hot plates. They bring in fishing coolers full of food. And they' they know they're there. They know they're there for the long run, you know. um So they they set themselves up really good.
00:27:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice.
00:27:48
Nick
um before a big event and then we we stock the boxes too oh yeah no they they they don't mess around they know that they're going to be there for the long haul um and we staff heavily on a lot of our larger sites so they they cycle in and out they're they're smart i mean they're
00:27:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
Big tailgate.
00:28:07
Nick
I don't know, man. I'm just really, really blessed with some awesome, awesome guys that are just like, nope, yeah, we're here. We know we know we're going to, you know. i mean, my guys on the Amazon sites, they're they're banging out 100, 120-hour work weeks. You I mean? Like, they know when it starts.
00:28:26
Nick
we're We're good to go. We're we're prepared.
00:28:29
RICK JAMES
That's awesome.
00:28:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's cool. Very cool.
00:28:33
All About Green LLC
Nick, where are you recruiting your guys from? Like to, you know, because we've had, I've used a couple different avenues to get guys and I found most of them are pretty good, but you know, you find a couple bad apples in there, but.
00:28:45
Nick
um basically um it's basically word of mouth right now i mean uh it's it's yeah
00:28:52
All About Green LLC
Yeah.
00:28:55
RICK JAMES
You don't you want to give them up, man.
00:28:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, don't tell them.
00:28:57
RICK JAMES
You don't want to give them up.
00:28:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
Don't tell them.
00:28:59
Nick
Yeah, I mean, li I got to be completely honest.
00:28:59
All About Green LLC
now No, no, no, no.
00:29:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
Ha ha ha!
00:29:01
All About Green LLC
Ha ha ha.
00:29:04
Nick
I have um a very solid philosophy, and I don't mean to make this sound like a LinkedIn post, but it's like, dude, everyone's got to win. My company, we all win.
00:29:16
Nick
if If everyone's not winning, I'm not doing the right thing. So guys... really want to come to work with us. um Like I said, we try and set them up for success with food, water, all that good stuff that everyone does, but then like making sure everyone's getting good hours with salting,
00:29:35
Nick
and that's what they're here for they're here to work through the winter because their main trade is is an off season whether you're a roofer a painter fence guy um you know i'm here to make sure that they have enough work and i'm serving you know the right clientele that will provide that that work so um that's my biggest thing with my guys and it Everyone, you know, word travels fast when when, you know, kind of the boss treats you good.
00:30:01
Nick
It also helps too that, you know, a lot of the guys that are working for me are kind of the same age as me.
00:30:02
The SnowJobs Podcast
Sure. Mm-hmm.
00:30:06
Nick
You what mean? Just because I'm not out in the field during the active snowstorm, the hours that lead up past that, I'm in the field, I'm driving the tractor trailer, I'm moving equipment around, I'm hauling snow with the guys.
00:30:16
Nick
You know, once once the brunt of the storm passes and the chaos calms and there's still hours and days worth of work, you know, then then I jump right in there with them and I'm, you know, doing some of the largest work with them.
00:30:29
Nick
So I think they appreciate that as well.
00:30:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
Absolutely Cool Absolutely
00:30:32
RICK JAMES
Yeah, it's awesome.
00:30:33
All About Green LLC
Yeah, the self recruiting is the best. Like once you I felt like once once those guys know that they're taken care of, i agree like they're like, hey, do you need more guys?
00:30:41
All About Green LLC
i can get more.
00:30:43
Nick
Yeah, and that's kind of like from last year, we went from 60 guys.
00:30:46
Nick
This year we're running 130, and I've heard nothing but positive feedback where it's like, how how much more work are you bringing Because I got more guys. i have more people. More guys are coming.
00:30:55
All About Green LLC
Yeah.
00:30:56
Nick
um And I tell them, just you bring the guys, I'll find the work. Everybody has to win, you know, and that that's my thing.
00:31:02
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice.
00:31:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
Cool. Sean, when your mic cut out the other day, we were at the, did you have any issues during the big blizzard?
00:31:14
Native Snow
I don't remember my answer because I lied. did I have any problems?
Competitor Dynamics & Market Influence
00:31:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
We couldn't hear you. ah I don't remember what you said.
00:31:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
and then when I listened to it this morning, nobody heard it.
00:31:25
Native Snow
No, i don't I don't. We didn't have too many issues. This storm actually went know really well. Aside for some broken plows that were easy to fix in the field. One that was on Brian's site down the road from one of the sites that we kind of like passed by.
00:31:40
RICK JAMES
That was your plow, wasn't it?
00:31:42
Native Snow
Yeah, it was my plow. Of course. Other than that.
00:31:45
All About Green LLC
as We got them back up and running.
00:31:46
Native Snow
wait Yeah. Other than that. ah Everything went pretty smooth.
00:31:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
all the machines made it through unscathed
00:31:52
Native Snow
For once. Yeah. Yeah. Pop the tire.
00:31:56
RICK JAMES
How's that news?
00:31:57
Native Snow
But no. That was what it was. Operator error.
00:32:02
RICK JAMES
little curbage there?
00:32:02
Native Snow
We got that fixed.
00:32:03
RICK JAMES
little curbage?
00:32:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
well that's a that's a big turnaround for you man good for you dude
00:32:04
RICK JAMES
Did you run into the old curve or what?
00:32:06
Native Snow
Yeah. That was good.
00:32:09
RICK JAMES
How's that new salt truck working out you got this year?
00:32:11
Native Snow
I love that thing. I need like five more of those. I'll be set.
00:32:15
Native Snow
We won't ever have to plow again. We'll just salt it all away.
00:32:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, shoot. And then what other what other question do we have that Sean was not available for? ah Oh, you know, we started to get into it, but I don't think we we did because of Sean's audio there.
00:32:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
um the The amount of failures in your area, because, like, you guys have been down a couple years, and there's a lot of guys out there low-balling sites on the no-snow model, and this year they've had to they had to come to bat.
00:32:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
uh there's got to be tons and tons of failures have you guys picked up any any work anybody beating down your door to try and get you to take their shit
00:32:57
Native Snow
No, I had one um one property manager that we bid his plaza like four years in a row. Keep not getting it. They keep giving it to a guy in New York. you know, comes from New York to New Jersey.
00:33:09
Native Snow
Owns a landscaping business.
00:33:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
mm-hmm
00:33:11
Native Snow
And they didn't do too well. They called me up, asked me if I can go help him out. But ah pretty much respectfully declined. And
00:33:18
RICK JAMES
Was that the one that was still still not plowed as the other day that you were selling pictures of?
00:33:22
Native Snow
no, that was a mall that i was at.
00:33:24
Native Snow
Yeah, that was great.
00:33:26
Native Snow
But yeah, there's a lot failures.
00:33:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
it was a You were at a mall that wasn't plowed?
00:33:30
Native Snow
It was literally drive lanes that were not plowed. Cars had to drive over five foot plus piles of snow the middle the mall. It's crazy.
00:33:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
And this is how long after the storm?
00:33:37
RICK JAMES
Five foot? Holy.
00:33:39
Native Snow
Just two days ago, so what were you, two weeks, two and a half weeks?
00:33:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, my God. Two weeks. Wow.
00:33:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
It'll melt.
00:33:46
Nick
ah allt you have it The are hurting bad.
00:33:46
Native Snow
other than that, I didn't get no...
00:33:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, they are. They can't afford anything.
00:33:50
All About Green LLC
They are. Yep.
00:33:52
Native Snow
Yeah. Other than that, I didn't get too many calls, but I've seen a lot of failures. They're all over the place. And I got well documented in my phone.
00:34:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
tons
00:34:02
Native Snow
Took pictures of everything.
00:34:04
Nick
your best sales tool.
00:34:04

00:34:15
All About Green LLC
I lost two sites, one to a national and one to some low bidder, and I got calls after the first storm from both of them.
00:34:24
All About Green LLC
it was those It was good. felt It was a nice nice phone calls to take.
00:34:28
RICK JAMES
Did you help them out or did you tell them that?
00:34:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah be
00:34:30
All About Green LLC
yeah i went i Yeah, I told her we could take them both on, but I guess whatever their reasoning was, they ended up, I guess their contract-wise, they had to end up staying with them. But yeah, they were they kept calling me, like, do you have capacity to take us? She's like, yeah, sure. Just let just let me know.
00:34:45
All About Green LLC
And actually another one was the IHOP that's connected to our other plaza. Weber Landscaping was coming by.
00:34:51
All About Green LLC
He was taking pictures of the front of that store too. They plowed the snow to the restaurant, up on the front of the restaurant.
00:34:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
That sounds about right.
00:34:58
RICK JAMES
I've seen that before.
00:34:59
All About Green LLC
Yeah, it was insane.
00:34:59
RICK JAMES
I've seen that before.
00:35:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
Is that not okay? but but ah
00:35:04
RICK JAMES
I've seen that on YouTube before.
00:35:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. Yeah. yeah you What you mean? Blocking the main entrance into the restaurant or occupancy is not good.
00:35:09
All About Green LLC
Yeah, they they took all the handicapped spots.
00:35:10
RICK JAMES

00:35:13
All About Green LLC

00:35:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's called ensuring hauling.
00:35:14
All About Green LLC
i think
00:35:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right.
00:35:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's Fargo standard operating procedure right there. Block all the edges.
00:35:21
RICK JAMES
Oh, come on now.
00:35:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
Then we have to haul.
00:35:22
RICK JAMES
that's That's not who I'm talking about. No.
00:35:25
The SnowJobs Podcast

00:35:29
RICK JAMES
We don't have fire hydrants here.
00:35:41
RICK JAMES
Blind? What's blind?
00:35:44
Native Snow
Lines to go. You said it was, right?
00:35:45
Nick
Blinds to go. Blinds to go.
00:35:46
All About Green LLC
Yeah.
00:35:49
RICK JAMES
I can't see anything. White screen.
00:35:51
All About Green LLC
I think the biggest thing that i noticed was that guys can plow six inches of the snow, but when you got to the real storms, that's when everybody started fucking up.
00:35:56
Native Snow
don't know what's wrong with it.
00:35:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. Well, you can't keep up. If you're getting a 24-inch blizzard and it's going to be two-inch-an-hour snowfall rates and you're spread out 30 to 40 minutes between sites, you can't keep up with that with a truck.
00:36:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
You're going to lose the ability to move it around.
00:36:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
you know And that's when guys fail.
00:36:18
Native Snow
Are you sure?
00:36:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
What?
00:36:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
I don't put anything past native snowman because I've seen what your trucks come back looking like. So, I mean, so i you get it done however you need to. The frame is bent. The black back window is blown out.
00:36:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, my God.
00:36:36
Nick
I got all summer to fix that up. That's no big deal.
00:36:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
the A little tweak here.
00:36:40
Native Snow
We got to get the job done.
00:36:40
RICK JAMES
But we won't fix it.
00:36:41
Native Snow
It doesn't matter how we do it.
00:36:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's a little tweak here. little twinge there.
00:36:44
All About Green LLC
On a six inch storm, Sean's got enough salt to melt three inches of it, so it's fine.
00:36:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
He's not worried about it.
00:36:48
All About Green LLC
100%.
00:36:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Exactly. Sean, were you salting during that storm? Getting two inches an hour?
00:36:53
Native Snow
i was I was with the state. I was actually pulling my salt truck at the state facility and they were loading me up. I'm like, I'm going to salt.
00:37:01
Nick
ah but That probably, that actually probably works.
00:37:04
Nick
I'm not even joking.
00:37:04
Native Snow
It would 100% work.
00:37:05
Nick
That probably works.
00:37:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
might work.
00:37:06
All About Green LLC
hundred percent
00:37:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah
00:37:08
Native Snow
Those guys, they don't give a shit. They're like, yeah, okay.
00:37:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, God.
00:37:10
Native Snow
Throw the guy $40 and bring him a sandwich. He'll be like, yeah, um i'm in.
00:37:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, man.
00:37:17
Nick
load it up so we uh we we didn't do i didn't there was a lot of failures i got a lot of calls we same thing with sean brian you know you you can't take on too much i mean the the clients we have you know like i said it's days after the storm we're working for but we did have uh
00:37:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
So what else? Go ahead.
00:37:36
Nick
We did go in with a massive UPS terminal. We went in and scraped trailers throughout the night.
00:37:41
All About Green LLC
Thank you.
00:37:43
Nick
We put in a 12-hour shift to make sure the trailers scraped we're were finished being scraped off. And that was kind of just like, hey, that was โ
00:37:52
Nick
That's a site where I really would like to be. So sure if this will help or not, but I'm going to put my equipment there. going to put my company name there. I'm going to make sure that I'm present, you know, and we did a ah great job.
00:38:04
Nick
They were very happy. So that was, uh, we did that a couple days after.
00:38:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
You don't have to say who help who who's doing that site that couldn't get it done, but what did they have? I'm always curious. What did they have it staffed with? Like what kind of equipment was there to handle the UPS distribution center?
00:38:16
Nick
Yeah, so it's ah it was a 2.5 million square foot mega hub, and they had two four-yard wheel loaders and a skid steer, and they just didn't show up.
00:38:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
They didn't show up.
00:38:28
Nick
They didn't even try.
00:38:29
Nick
They just didn't even show up.
00:38:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
Wow.
00:38:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
Wow.
00:38:31
RICK JAMES
So you pushed a whole lot or were you saying you
00:38:32
Nick
Yeah. Now somebody else, somebody else came in on an emergency call, got the place open, um got them going. It was an out of state company um that was like staged ahead of the blizzard that was was in the right place at the right time.
00:38:51
Nick
um worked out great for them because they probably made a ton of money um and then basically basically they they got the place open like I said there was some detail worked on and then they they basically peeled down headed back um and then we came in and just did the the trailer scraping um made sure that the trailers so they they ran they uh no they had um like a permanent like the v blade that drops down so basically they have a guillotine
00:38:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
I bet.
00:38:56
All About Green LLC
there's no doubt.
00:39:07
RICK JAMES
So what do you mean trailer screen? Sorry, like truck rush or what?
00:39:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, they have a guillotine.
00:39:15
RICK JAMES
Oh, yeah. Yep. You just, yep.
00:39:18
All About Green LLC
Yeah, I saw that. and
00:39:19
All About Green LLC
Yeah. Yeah.
00:39:20
Nick
So we came in and just made sure that it stayed cleaned out.
00:39:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:39:23
Nick
Every truck gets scraped. Maybe after every 10 or 15, put a little bit of salt down to burn the ice back, the blacktop.
00:39:30
Nick
um Wasn't that big of a deal with the salt because the temperatures have been really warm post-storm. So, you know, just maintaining, you know, but these trailers had two feet of snow on them.
00:39:41
Nick
So every time um a trailer would run through, it's just, it was an effort. You know It four labors, two on each side, plus the operator,
00:39:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
sure
00:39:50
Nick
um So ah it was a lot to make sure that we could keep the trailers moving at a good pace to make sure they were cleaned out and ready to go out on the road.
00:39:50
All About Green LLC
Yeah.
00:39:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah two feet of snow that's no small feat like if you had a two incher that you're trying to get off the top of it that's a big pile of snow coming off a 40 footer or 52 oh man that's crazy
00:40:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, there were just there were so many failures. i'm just I'm very excited for guys out there to start hearing when the negotiations start and if people are starting.
00:40:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
I wonder how many people, like everybody's been talking about for years now that the contracts when people are contacting or sending out RFPs have gotten later and later and later towards the winter.
00:40:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
I'm wondering if you're going to see a shift now. for some of these places that they're going to be shopping as soon as the winter is over to make sure they have a qualified contractor in place
Impact of Winter Conditions on Contracts
00:40:44
Nick
i have ah i haven't I have ideal client meetings scheduled for April first
00:40:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
because it's a disaster out there.
00:40:45
Native Snow
That would be nice.
00:40:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, that's what i'm saying.
00:40:51
All About Green LLC
I just going say, yeah, I think it's going to be early.
00:40:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
I bet you.
00:40:52
Nick
i already have I already have my maps built. I got to finish proposals and we're going in April 1st with an ideal client. the multi multi Multi-site, multi-year.
00:41:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's great.
00:41:05
Nick
um Same thing with the hospital I do.
00:41:07
Nick
The hospital has always self-performed snow. I don't know how in the world they did it. They picked a great year to hire a snow contractor. And after the second storm, they're like, how soon can we sign you for a multi-year?
00:41:20
Nick
I said, We haven't even gotten any snow yet. Let's just get through the s snow to make sure we like each other.
00:41:24
All About Green LLC
Thank
00:41:24
Nick
You know, like let's get through a complicated storm and see how we both handle it.
00:41:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:41:28
Nick
Like, can I communicate with you? Can you communicate with me? This, you know, this is a regional hospital helipad, um three or four bay ambulance doors. Like it's not, it's not a trauma center, but it's the only hospital around.
00:41:41
Nick
So It sees volume, you know. um
00:41:46
Nick
So talk about actually serving an emergency service facility, you know, and and he's telling me December, January, February, hey, when can you drop a three-year contract on my desk? You know, so, um you know, we're working on that. But it's like it to prove to your point, yes, you know, I think I'll be signing new clients on multi-years before, you know, April, May.
00:42:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
This is a market This is what we've been talking about for the last three years This is what everybody needed You needed a market reset winter This is it It just fucking happened
00:42:16
RICK JAMES
So, so with the, for you guys who haven't had great winters in the past, are you guys going to change anything in your contracts or add anything into them now that you've had had a little more of a winter last this last year?
00:42:17
All About Green LLC
Yep. fact Definitely.
00:42:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
I think brian Brian mentioned the sleek claws, right?
00:42:36
All About Green LLC
I was going to ask Nick's opinion on this.
00:42:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:42:38
All About Green LLC
Nick, you're the the storm at the end of January versus the blizzard and the two and a half inches of sleet on top. We were talking about that and how big of a difference that made.
00:42:48
All About Green LLC
And then when I went to look at our billing, like we really didn't have anything in there to kind of protect us on that amount of labor and time that it's been for us to remove that. I'm definitely rest restructuring that, but what were your thoughts on those two storms?
00:43:03
Nick
Yeah, I mean, so with the first one, um we definitely saw, ah you know, payroll is north of a quarter million dollars for the week. You know, it's it's it's an effort.
00:43:16
Nick
You know what i mean? um
00:43:20
Nick
yeah I don't know if I'm necessarily going to change anything um per se. a lot of my Amazons are basically a hybrid where it's a tiered seasonal. Yeah.
00:43:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah.
00:43:33
Nick
I, I, yeah, we, we, we did good.
00:43:36
Nick
We did fine. Um, the hospital.
00:43:37
All About Green LLC
Yeah.
00:43:40
Nick
you know, where it's a massive contract. Um, I don't think I would change anything. Honestly, i think I would be more clear on like, what's TNM, you know, like the front, it did
Storm Challenges & Operational Impact
00:43:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah
00:43:51
Nick
you know, like it, I'm not saying don't protect yourself.
00:43:54
Nick
I'm not saying don't worry about it in the future, but like we've, we've already plowed 14 inches off. Yeah. The, the sleek came in. Um, you know, these are large contracts that are on their seasonal, their seasonal, um,
00:44:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
Thank you.
00:44:10
Nick
guarantee where i know where you're going with it because like the sleet equals so many inches but like a lot of my stuff isn't per event per inch so i didn't really feel the pain of like oh i wish i could have grabbed another you know five inches out of this thing versus the two inches of sleet um we did see you know
00:44:34
Nick
I didn't see a crazy amount on my normal contracts with the labor and how much it cost to clear the two inches of sleep. We saw a huge, massive effort in the trailer yards, stuff where, like, a lot of that is T&M, where it was kind of a benefit, to be honest with you.
00:44:50
All About Green LLC
Same.
00:44:51
Nick
so thoughts on overall thoughts on it was like yes it was it was harder to clear half the amount of snow with the sleet because the ground temperatures were so cold it was so cold leading up to that storm it was so cold during the storm it and it was cold post storm where it just required a lot of effort a lot of salt um the blizzard i thought one went over ah honestly ah it was I thought it went easier.
00:45:14
Nick
I thought it was easier to clean it because it was warm before the storm.
00:45:16
All About Green LLC
Yeah. yeah
00:45:17
Nick
It was cold during the storm, which gave you the boosted totals. And then post-storm, you know, I heard you guys talking about this before it cut out. was like, man, it finished snowing. Temperatures went up into the thirties. The sun is strong before the wind had a chance to kick up.
00:45:34
Nick
The sun started melting the snow back. So it really kind of crossed it over and started melting down the fluffy snow to the point where when the wind did pick up, we didn't see those massive drifts and the pavement was so warm already that like it cleaned up pretty nice.
00:45:48
Nick
You know, and we didn't have this massive salt dump at the end, trying to, you know, burn back ice. So, um,
00:45:54
All About Green LLC
Yeah, that January storm, we were like, the moment it slowed down to like less than an inch an hour, we were putting salt down trying to get the milk going.
00:46:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, I'm definitely not going to change anything about our contracts. Everything that I had in the contracts leading up to this season worked as intended to protect us from a season like this where we literally doubled up.
00:46:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
We doubled up on everything. We doubled up on snow totals. o I think ours were triple. Labor hours were triple what they normally were for the last five years. But the bills at the end for the overages over the caps are they're going to more than cover that. And we're going come out right where we should be again. So definitely the only thing I might do is I might, depending on,
00:46:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
when we when we're actually done done and I can sit down and get, you know a couple hours to breathe and start working the numbers, I might lower the the overage rates per inch on some sites because I'm able to see how many extra labor hours we actually did there for that much more snow. And, you know, because up until now, you're basically guessing.
00:47:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know, you're yeah you you you could tell me I was getting, you know, 84 inches or whatever in in October, but I'm guessing at how those storms are going to come. Are they coming a lot of three inches? Are they coming in big, big chunks?
00:47:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
So I was guessing at how many labor hours, how much fuel we were going to go through. Now you at least have a baseline where we, and it was a pretty good mix. The 80 inches was a pretty good mix. of little stuff one to twos two to fours uh we had some sixes we had eight to tens we had 16 we had 23 we had everything so it was ah it was a pretty good mix across the board so i might adjust the uh the numbers on a couple of the sites down a little bit because i think they may be a little high think there may be a little sticker shock but again we did great work the clients are all ecstatic
00:47:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
So nobody's really I've I've I've reached out and informed them that you guys know that you're way over your cap. Right. So this there's going to be an additional check coming.
00:48:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's not going to be pretty. And so far, you know, we understand.
00:48:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
No, it's been great. You know, it's been a lot of snow. I'm glad the winter's over and just let us know what it is. So hopefully that all works out. And and we also figured out we're going to dump a couple sites after this year.
00:48:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
So that was, we can make we can make a lot more money taking on a couple smaller sites for for what we're already told. Yeah, blank check. Let us know how much you need.
00:48:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
And we can get rid of, you know, some of the bigger ones that are more labor intensive. so that's a that's what we're coming out of it with but we we made out i mean we made out like champs uh as far compared to you guys we only had 15 16 inches out of that blizzard so and the wind when the wind wasn't a problem the wind died down before the snow was over so everything that was going to get blown around was already blown around before we did final cleanups but that's all had anybody got anything else they want to talk about
00:49:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
Otherwise, I think we gave him a pretty good bonus episode.
00:49:16
All About Green LLC
I think we're good.
00:49:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
You got anything else? Sean, you got anything else?
00:49:21
Native Snow
No, um I would say the only thing with adding adding to the contract thing is ah this year long duration storms really sucked. and We got like four inches over like 30 hours.
00:49:33
Native Snow
That's going into the contract. Some kind of like long duration clause.
00:49:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
Didn't we talk about this? Bullshit.
00:49:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
We talked about this last year. I told you. You got to put that in there. Yeah, yeah, wave me off.
00:49:41
Native Snow
I never heard of it before.
00:49:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. You even asked me about it. I sent you how we wrote it up.
00:49:46
RICK JAMES
That would be every storm here. is One inch, 30 hours.
00:49:48
Native Snow
Yeah. Uh, it's brutal. And it's like so many of those storms were so long this year. Uh, the sleep thing that we, me and Brian have talked about multiple times.
00:49:58
Native Snow
We're not in the same boat as Nick.
00:49:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well, i can that can get you.
00:50:00
Native Snow
We're, we're not, we're not mainly seasonal. We're more per inch per push. So something's gotta to be done with that. Like, ah like I said, i don't know if they had the audio from the, from yesterday's, but I ate all the shit on that 15 inch fucking sleep storm.
00:50:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yes.
00:50:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah
00:50:15
Native Snow
That was no, they caught that one.
00:50:15
All About Green LLC
That audio part they call it.
00:50:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
But that's those extend some kind of clause, some extended duration, something like that.
00:50:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
You got to do that whether it's a seasonal or a per push because if you know you could have it in there that, okay, one to three is this price.
Weather Forecasting Reliability
00:50:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
You can get three quarters of an inch of fucking sleet or ice that lasts 17 hours that you have to salt that thing five fucking times. And I guarantee you, you're going to be way over your price quote for one to three inches of snow.
00:50:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
So you got to have something in there to discern between the two and get you some money.
00:50:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know, generally our extended snow clause, basically every time we have to go salt is an additional charge. You know, every every visit we have to make there every two to three hours, it' we charge for it.
00:51:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's how you have to, you know, you have to do it. Otherwise, going to lose your shirt on those ice storms, which, thank God, i mean, with the winter we've had, we have not had an ice storm. Knock on wood.
00:51:16
All About Green LLC
Yeah, feel like up north, like Boston area, they got a lot of that freezing rain these last couple of storms.
00:51:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
Dude, they did. We've got nothing but all snow all the time. it's
00:51:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
you know as as hard a winter as it was, it was easy compared to what some guys got.
00:51:31
RICK JAMES
Oh, is it over?
00:51:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
Huh?
00:51:33
RICK JAMES
I thought you were supposed
00:51:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah You get get me past the 20th.
00:51:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like I said, get me past that 16th to the 20th period, and I'm good because that's usually when they pop up.
00:51:41
Native Snow
don't know. The hero keeps popping something.
00:51:43
RICK JAMES
were supposed to. Didn't Nick say you got another event next week or something?
00:51:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's what Nick says, but when has Weather Pros been right this year?
00:51:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
Ah, Nick's going to yell at me.
00:51:51
All About Green LLC
Uh-oh. Uh-oh.
00:51:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
Actually, i just said off i just said off for the recording, Weather Pros, I got to give them credit because they've been honestly 100%.
00:52:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
Besides last week when we had those two 50-50 shots of a half an inch to an inch, they were all winter long. They were dead on. when When Nick said it was going to snow, it snowed.
00:52:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
So got to give weather pros props on that one as much as I like breaking their balls because it does get under their skin. It's a lot of fun. But, you know, in all seriousness, business related stuff, they were they were locked in this year. They had the they definitely had the beat on it.
00:52:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
Good for them. you know and sean likes it nick sean actually likes it when you don't change from two inches to 24 inches till the hour before it starts sean actually likes that we found out and so he'd rather have that
00:52:31
Native Snow
Weatherworks is good too.
00:52:41
Nick
Oof. It's got to make one of us because that's definitely not me.
00:52:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
i know that's not me either but that's it so see the room is split brian tiebreaker tiebreaker brian
00:52:48
RICK JAMES
Doesn't bother me. Wouldn't bother me.
00:52:51
All About Green LLC
Yeah.
00:52:51
Native Snow
It's literally split.
00:52:54
RICK JAMES
It's just fucking work.
00:52:55
All About Green LLC
I need a little bit more than 48 hours.
00:52:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
There you go. see All right.
00:52:59
RICK JAMES
What's the difference?
00:52:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
So we win.
00:53:00
RICK JAMES
You're out there working?
00:53:00
Native Snow
Yeah, what the hell?
00:53:02
Native Snow
I don't know.
00:53:02
RICK JAMES
You don't want people to figure out excuses.
00:53:02
Native Snow
You know, but problem yeahy the problem with that side of the room is they're just fucking nervous.
00:53:05
RICK JAMES
Just get them out there and they can't leave.
00:53:12
Native Snow
It's like, what are you nervous about? You're going to be fucked regardless.
00:53:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
my God.
00:53:15
Native Snow
i'll Just do it.
00:53:21
RICK JAMES
ah I feel that every day.
00:53:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right. We good.
00:53:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
Everybody good?
00:53:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
right.
00:53:30
Nick
thanks Thanks for having me.
00:53:30
All About Green LLC
Yeah, good.
00:53:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, Nick, thanks for coming on, man.
00:53:33
All About Green LLC
Thank you, guys.
00:53:33
RICK JAMES
Thanks a lot, Nick.
