Hello

Premier League Finale: Unexpected Shootout for Europe

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
and welcome to the GSPN Forest podcast as we enter the final week of the Premier League season. Joining me, Stuart, we have James. James, we were saying just before we went to record that you thought it would come down to a final day shootout with Chelsea, but you probably weren't expecting a final day shootout for Europe.
00:00:25
James
yeah
00:00:29
James
No, no, I thought, beginning the season, I thought it was going to be a bit like Arsenal. The first season, was it, where we needed something in order to stay up, thought might be that situation again.

Sky's Ideal Script & Financial Implications of Europa League

00:00:41
James
But then as the season went on and we were doing well, maybe, you know, October time, I started looking at the other way around and thinking that could be, if Sky were to write, the script, you know,
00:00:55
James
that'd be it wouldn't it it'd be a cup final basically this i mean i'm sure someone will say if it's if it's um europa league how much do we get for the europa league something like a 30 million pound game or something you know like they do for um well yeah 150 million pound
00:01:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
and The Championship Player Final, you're right.
00:01:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that's the crazy thing. I think Europa League is less than the Championship Player Final. I think it probably is the £30 million pound game. um But it's just, again, we'll probably come to that later in terms of the financial benefits of the Conference League.
00:01:19
James
yeah
00:01:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, there certainly are arguments that Conference League participation is more trouble than it's worth.
00:01:27
James
yeah
00:01:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
But i will we'll come to that because we don't want to sort of lose sight of
00:01:32
James
yeah
00:01:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, the Forest have done well to at least keep it alive into the last day. what

Forest vs. West Ham: Team Transformation Analysis

00:01:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
West Ham yesterday, as we record, it was a tricky game, but Forest returned to winning ways. How did you feel when we went into that halftime break? up, what was your but thoughts of the halftime?
00:01:52
James
I still wasn't confident. and you know West Ham had turned it on a bit towards the end of the half. And I was just thinking, wow, this is this is not going to go well in the second half if we don't come out firing.
00:02:05
James
And then the last half an hour of the game, once they scored, they were a different team. I couldn't believe it. like I don't know if they'd just decided they'd got something to play for then. And we got nervous.
00:02:16
James
But yeah, they were a different team once they scored.
00:02:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and I think that's what will become really interesting in the final day is beware the team that have nothing to play for. ah you West Ham, they have nothing tangible
00:02:30
James
Thank

West Ham's Farewell: Emotional Player Departures

00:02:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
to play for.
00:02:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they're definitely going to finish 15th regardless, but there was a number of their players making their last appearance for the club, Cresswell and Souffal and probably Paquitar as well, realistically.
00:02:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
So even though they didn't have enough it in it for but for the whole game, ah yeah It certainly caused us problems even before Forrest took the lead. West Ham had forced a good save from cells. So certainly, I said, with our recent form, at no point of the game were we confident, especially at half-time when Morello was being stretched off in El Lomar.
00:03:04
James
Yeah, I know. I couldn't believe that. I thought that was the end of his season. The way that he was kind of signalling for changing and and you know shouting out, I thought, he's done. ah so i thought the same for Anderson when he was lying on the ground, having been stomped on and you know hands on his face. I thought, is that the end of his season?
00:03:23
James
Let's hope we can just get at least one more game out of Murillo before he goes off to, don't know, who needs a defender? some big team will take him. um And Gibbs White, imagine if this Gibbs White's last performance for Forrest and he knows it, possibly, at the city ground. I'm hoping he ah you know gives and, it all there.
00:03:50
James
yeah

Gibbs White: Emotional Play & Fan Perception

00:03:51
James
put it all out there
00:03:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think certainly Gibbs-Wide, he, I mean, if he were to look Gibbs-Wide as a whole, he is always that emotional player. I mean, I know that um perhaps if some of the City fans haven't been as excited as probably we we thought thought they should be about signing him. Maybe it's because what he does off the ball doesn't get enough credit. People who don't perhaps follow Forrest or didn't follow Wolves or Sheffield United early in his career might just think he's just a number 10.
00:04:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
But as we've seen, he is so much more than that. And he is capable of dragging a team up and leading the team by the scruff of their neck. We mentioned before we started recording Wembley, his Wembley second half performance ah before Pep signed him at full time was one of the the best individual performances.
00:04:32
James
Yeah.
00:04:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think we we've seen from a Forest player and that was the same on ah yesterday against West Ham as well.
00:04:44
James
Yeah, I think... I mean, the guy's immense and the way that he he reminds me, his tenacity reminds me of a young kind of Wayne Rooney when he used to chase every ball and dive into tackles and he got himself a few red cards here and there.
00:05:03
James
He probably not got quite the explosiveness, but the way that he's like a dog with a bone you know going after everything. Yeah. Yeah, we'll miss him if he goes. I

Future Prospects: Gibbs White's Role and Value

00:05:15
James
mean, there's lots of ifs and buts, but Man City have given up their chasing of Florian Wurtz.
00:05:23
James
So but there's that space. Benefits of Gibbs White are that he's homegrown. He'll count as a homegrown player on the roster rather than um a European or an international player taking up a spot.
00:05:38
James
and So that will go towards you know the FA's requirements for the squad. um It'll probably be cheaper than Verts, even though they they're still banding around the £100 million pound figure to sign him. But then will he have to give him such an uplifting you know wages and different things? He's not going to be £300,000, £400,000 week, is he?
00:06:01
James
thousand a week is it um So, yeah, what we'll have to see. I hope he doesn't go, but I think we were lucky to keep him last season. Who knows?
00:06:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's a very, very interesting case. Last

Transfer Speculations: Gibbs White and Murillo

00:06:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
season, yeah, as we were all really, we'd accepted that one of Gibbs-White or Murillo would be leaving City Ground before that 30th of June PSR deadline last year. And then for reasons, let's be honest, that haven't quite been explained, Lyon broke their club record to sign Moussa Niacarte, who was a Middling centre-back.
00:06:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
He probably wasn't even as good as Willy Bolli last year.
00:06:37
James
Yeah.
00:06:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it definitely remains to be seen how and why. Marinakis and friends managed to persuade Leon to spend £30 million on Yekate. But when did these things happened. We god got lucky. Gibbs-White Murillo were both able to stay. They both probably doubled their value significantly.
00:06:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
this this year as well. What's interesting, you look at the contract situation, Gibbs-White has just two years left on his deal, whereas Murillo signed an extension earlier in the season.
00:07:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
So and you're looking at the two of them, you're probably going to say it's going to be Gibbs-White rather than Murillo, who's going to be our big transformative sale.
00:07:08
James
Yeah.
00:07:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Then you look at what happened with Villa and Grealish. Villa got 100 million for Grealish, invested it really wisely. It's arguably kick-started there. um run until it's going to be a third year in a row in Europe for them, possibly two of them in the Champions League as well.
00:07:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we're reinvesting the 100 million for Gibbs White.
00:07:30
James
yeah
00:07:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
mean, it sucks. It's modern football. You don't want to be losing a player, what feels to be, early on in in his career. mean,

Injury Concerns: Futures of Gibbs White and Awani

00:07:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
apart from Brian Yates, our longest serving player is Taiwa Awani, and he's probably going to leave the summer as well. So you want to build those connections with players for five, six, seven years at a time, rather than refresh the squad every two or three years.
00:07:54
James
Do you think I won't even leave? I don't know. i didn't know if this whole injury thing might have you know meant that he'd stay just because we wouldn't get the price that's required for an injured player who's not played since injury.
00:08:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i mean, I think yeah in terms of BB being cynical, right. I think that will work in Taiwo's favour because of what the injury was. It wasn't a playing injury. It was that ah car crash, essentially, the speed he hit that post.
00:08:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think that will keep Taiwo at the club.
00:08:23
James
Yeah, yeah.
00:08:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think he'll be third, if not fourth choice. So I don't don't think he'll be...
00:08:29
James
Yeah. honor
00:08:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
It'll be very, very good if he gets back to his fitness and form from that first Premier League year. But he hadn't been like that anyway, even without the... the X is a nose, breaking his nose and now rupturing his intestine against Leicester.
00:08:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
So as well as well as the muscle injuries, which never quite shook off, he's got these two freak impact injuries as well.
00:08:47
James
Crazy, wasn't it?
00:08:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
But no, I think back to Gibbs-White, I mean, it would be nice if he could be, I don't know, Matt Letizia, someone like that, a talented player who's happy to spend 10 years or so at a club who, ah mid-table with the occasional top half of European push, but it doesn't quite work out that way.
00:09:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Yeah, maybe we have to embrace the modern football, take the money, reinvest it rather than trying to hold on to a player romantic reasons if it just doesn't happen anymore.
00:09:20
James
Yeah, and I just hope that if he does go, and that we can be as kind of magnanimous and and respectful as we were with Johnson.
00:09:31
James
um As in when he comes back to play, we don't op and we don't end up in a wall situation where he's stood in front of the away fans giving it this. you know we're We're chanting horrible things about his his wife and or his girlfriend and his kid and stuff like that.
00:09:44
James
I hope that you know we we end up in a situation where we kind of bask in um him I know he's not one of our own in the sense that Johnson was, but still um that you know we can be respectful and and celebrate his successes rather than hate him.
00:10:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think

Transfer Drama: Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid?

00:10:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
thank you you'd want to mean like, let's say, play Spurs against Man City or for someone else. and Misses a chance, you can get the WSR kissy sarcastic ways and like that from the crowd, but then he's substituted, then the polite applause. think the same happened with Jed Spence when he came back playing for Spurs.
00:10:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Even when came up, got sent off with a second book of defence and he got a standing ovation and this and the Neil Warnock song for him when he walked off the pitch with that red card.
00:10:32
James
Yeah. But what about what about stuff like what's this this past week or so? Like the whole Alexander-Arnold thing and the scum at Liverpool.
00:10:43
James
What on earth were they doing against Arsenal when he came on and they booed him? you On what planet does any player who was homegrown has won everything with you, right?
00:10:58
James
And given his all, not deserve... a chance to do do something else. might have always been his dream to play for Real Madrid.
00:11:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, this is so strange, you're right. I mean, Liverpool have signed players on free transfers from other clubs. So if Liverpool had add no said, we don't sign players on free transfers, then maybe you can see why they'd be annoyed if one of their players leaves.
00:11:18
James
Yeah.
00:11:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that's football. Liverpool have been the predator at the top of the food chain, the signing players like and all their Southampton guys, Lallana, Lambert, Lovren, in that one summer when Southampton had that one good year, Liverpool gutted their squad out.
00:11:26
James
you
00:11:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
And yeah, I mean, why would Trent... be people would say, even Jamie Carragher said, Trent should have signed a new contract just to be sold with a release clause. But like, it's Trent's future. Why would Madrid agree to that?
00:11:46
James
Yeah.
00:11:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
if if If Trent signing a new deal for Liverpool to then be sold by Liverpool, then Madrid would be like, no, no, you you don't want us. Let's find we'll pick someone else.
00:11:55
James
yeah
00:11:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Football's a short career. Trent's given Liverpool fans two Premier League titles. They're only titles in the Premier League era. So yeah, it's just to boo him. I mean, all this Liverpool means more. I think that's ah a they call them so they so They say it, there's there's nothing to say. There's no difference between Liverpool and other fans apart from that self-image they have have over themselves.
00:12:19
James
Just be classy. Like, say goodbye to him. Say thank you. what i mean, what's he going to think now when he comes back? Is he going to come back and do Liverpool's Legends games like Crouch and people like that do um and sing the songs? Or is it going to leave a sour taste in his mouth and he'll think, well, you know, it didn't end well there.
00:12:39
James
I mean, it's not just his home club. It's his home, isn't it?
00:12:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i mean, the thing is, he's still young.
00:12:42
James
You know?
00:12:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's only 26 years old. So in theory, he could have gone to Madrid on a four-year contract, experienced the playing abroad, which he said he's wanted to do, then come back to Liverpool aged 30, 31, still a young enough player to make an impact.
00:12:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
So now they've burnt their own visions to make that less likely.
00:12:58
James
be honest. It's not like he's crossed the colour wheel and gone to Everton as a blue.
00:13:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:13:03
James
You know what I mean?
00:13:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:13:04
James
it's it's It's Madrid. They beat you all the time anyway. Don't even worry about it. It's not going to make a difference. You're still

Forest's European Dreams: Qualification Scenarios

00:13:11
James
going to lose. So, sorry.
00:13:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we'll talk about European football. Will we will we come up against Trent Alexander-Arnold and Real Madrid? Or will it be slightly less like European football after this?
00:14:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, with yes, um what what
00:14:03
James
so 40% is slice of the pie, isn't I've never heard one with 40% before, I'm sure. Flipping heck.
00:14:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
you heard it here first, at end of season sale at Bionique, get that proteins made for you for the your pre-season tour i'm ahead of and of a a European or away day, perhaps, James, if you're going to be yeah on the streets of Kludge.
00:14:14
James
I don't know.
00:14:24
James
Pennsylvania. Well, I'll tell you what. I've got this scarf on, right? And I don't know if anyone recognises this scarf, okay? You'll recognise this pattern because it's on the ah ah most epic away strip that we I think we've we've had and And it says, Forest on Tour, right?
00:14:46
James
And this scarf, I think, is as old or maybe a year or so younger then the last time we were in Europe. I'm sure this is 95, 96. Yeah.
00:14:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i was going to say it's it's definitely the color scheme.
00:14:57
James
where
00:14:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're right from that famous yellow shirt. I mean, both myself and Marley, I think maybe a lot of our listeners have bought that shirt in the retro re-release. So i was going ask you, is that scarf part of the retro re-release?
00:15:06
James
Yeah.
00:15:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that's an original from 95.
00:15:10
James
No, no, no. This is a, this is absolutely an original.
00:15:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's very, very impressive.
00:15:15
James
It says, uh, official souvenir galaxy sports. Yeah. and Is it dated? No. Oh, no. Here's how old it is, right?
00:15:25
James
The phone number says 0532. oh five three two It's not even got the 01. So it predates mobile phones. And you know when they bought in the one with Nottingham number?
00:15:36
James
It used to be 0159 and it 01159.
00:15:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's before even that when it was no one's adorned.
00:15:41
James
Yeah, it's it's that old. So it's one of the originals. and I had it when I was a kid and and thought, where's my Europe scarf gone? There is.
00:15:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very, very important thing important thing to find. Let's talk a bit about Europe. I mean, Forrest could qualify for any of the three competitions. I mean, there's a bit of a thought process going on that Forrest will fine with the Europa League anyway.
00:16:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's almost like you've been rejected by by the girl or didn't want you anyway in terms of the Champions League and Europa League is more of our level or do you not buy that at all and you've got to aim for the best?
00:16:13
James
Yeah.
00:16:17
James
No, I always got a aim for the best. Always got to aim for the best. You know, i don't think anyone, regardless of where they finished last season, should start a Premier League season thinking we don't want to win it.
00:16:31
James
You know, um where ah that that really gets me. Like, I know we say, I'd have been happy with the top half finish and stuff. But ultimately, on the first day of the season, everyone's got to dream of we can win it.
00:16:42
James
That dream might be, you know... Out of the window after the first few games. But so at this point, we've still got the chance to go for everything. So I think, you know, the number one hope would be Champions League for the money.
00:17:00
James
My hope is keep Gibbs white. You don't know. But I think if I was to look at the three leagues, to look at the um intensity, and likelihood of going far and kind of, you know, fixture congestion, things like that, Europa League's ideal.
00:17:21
James
One,

Europa League vs. Other Competitions: Strategic Benefits

00:17:22
James
I think we've got a good chance of winning it. I mean, look at it this season. United and Tottenham, 16th and 17th respectively um in the Premier League. You know, if they can if they can get there. And that's just crazy that one of the clubs who finish 16th or 17th is going to take a Champions League place next season. I mean, that's just unreal.
00:17:41
James
and And Palace, where Palace even finish in like 10th or something, and they're going to get a Europa League place.
00:17:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:47
James
So it's... it's Yeah, yeah.
00:17:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, the competitors, you're right, if they're on, we're better than the best of that Europa League, then you're right, it could be bigger teams, not the biggest, but certainly teams like Porto or um but Marseille or Monaco.
00:18:03
James
Yeah, yeah.
00:18:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
So not the elite elite in Europe, but still nice away days, um trick um tough matches who aren't going to be going to Bosnia or to Slovenia or ot to
00:18:08
James
Yeah.
00:18:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah third place teams in countries like that but can be a good standard of football but one that we should you said pointing at those United Nations and Tarsen we should get should get far in in Europa
00:18:13
James
Yeah.
00:18:19
James
but
00:18:22
James
Yeah, there's nothing I'd love more than to hear Champions League anthem played at the city ground. you know, and to to go to a Champions League night at the city ground. And regardless of the result, that just be amazing.
00:18:35
James
And yeah, maybe this is our only chance at it. Maybe it's just a freak season and this is our only chance at it for the next 20, 30 years or something. So we've always got to take it. You know, you never look a gift horse in the mouth.
00:18:46
James
But I just think, Conference, travel's a killer because you're going out to every man and his dog. There's some team in the middle of the bleeding Atlantic now in the finished fifth or something, in the Portuguese League.
00:19:02
James
um And they're in the conference now. And it's it's like how a many thousands of miles round trip midweek for a game to play some minnow. so I just think... and Not that it's below us. I mean, you finish where you finish, you're in room whatever competition you're in.
00:19:18
James
But I do think it's poison chalice, think, like you were saying earlier, and that it's it's not worth the trouble, maybe.

Challenges of Conference League Participation

00:19:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's very, very interesting. I think certainly the fans who would be able to take a week off work and go to the middle of the Atlantic, they'll be they'll have a great away day. But you're right, we just don't have the squad depth to do like what Chelsea have been doing to play the kids and the reserves in the Conference League. I don't think Cole Palmer played before the quarterfinal in this year's Conference League.
00:19:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
So they could have such a big squad that they could afford to still rest him.
00:19:51
James
Yeah.
00:19:51
James
Yeah.
00:19:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palmer was only playing Saturday, Saturday football in the first half the season. But for us, yeah, our players are looking tired now. They're going to be playing Sunday, Thursday, Sunday. And instead of training and relaxing those midweek, it's flying to the app footballing outpost of Europe.
00:20:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're right. and And we are the TV money increase getting conference league isn't so big that you can sign another 11 quality players.
00:20:11
James
yeah
00:20:18
James
yeah
00:20:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, I mean, look, it's still, you said at the start, you've to aim aim for the best. So qualifying the conference league, is better than finishing one place below it and not qualifying for the conference league in terms of an achievement but then when you look into the longer term effects it might be might hamper our chances next year but like you say you've got to aim for the best this year and I still think conference league is better than no Europe but I completely get your point it's they saying let's play in the conference league because we'll win it let's go in the Europa League and have a competitive time and might have a chance of winning it rather than
00:20:32
James

going to the Conference League and playing minnows and winning at a lesser competition. i do I do see that as well.
00:20:56
James
Yeah, i think I think, you know, I don't know who the most Eastern team is, but if we were to say it was somewhere in Kazakhstan and and then you've got the guys, the Portuguese guys in the middle of the Atlantic, the the length and breadth of the travel required to play in that league is just unreal.
00:21:15
James
and And it would be amazing if someone one day, once there's enough data, because how long is conference league been going? Three or four seasons now, something like that.
00:21:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:24
James
So in 20 years when we've got some decent data to look back on, for someone to do like a thesis on um looking at who finished in conference league place, who finished below and where they finished the next season.
00:21:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's true. That's true as well.
00:21:40
James
And to see if the Conference League team kicked on and went up into Europa and different things, or if they then finished mid-table and the team below them kicked on and got Europe the next season because of the fixture congestion and and different things like that.
00:21:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mhm.
00:21:56
James
So I do think it's it's more trouble than it's worth.
00:22:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
True. Speaking of more trouble than it's worth.
00:22:09
James
yeah
00:22:28
James
Woo! Zencast there. Oh, dear. Yeah, we weren't going to go into that. ah No, but... it So my thing as well is the financial investment from Maranakis. Maranakis,

Maranakis' Financial Commitment & Fair Play Rules

00:22:42
James
I'm sure, if he could, and PSR wasn't a thing, would put his whole, like...
00:22:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh yeah, completely. That's another, yeah.
00:22:47
James
built billions into into forest and we'd be up there flying with the the biggest uh hitters but know you wouldn't he's not got as much as the uh saudis but still um And he delivered on his promise when he stood on the balcony at the town hall in Nottingham and he said he was going to give him give Cooper the ammunition and to go.
00:23:10
James
ah he did, you know, and the first team that ammunition was spent very scattergun. and But I think we learned from that. We figured it out and we've gone, we've kissed a lot of frogs and we found some princes.
00:23:23
James
But then what level of investment can you give to the qualification. Obviously there's three tiers. So qualification for conference league.
00:23:34
James
I don't know what the, um, uh, financial benefits are just for qualifying champions league. It's something like 75 million. Is it?
00:23:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's about the aim of qualifying finish bottom of your group. That's the minimum you'll get, I think, yeah.
00:23:49
James
Yeah, yeah. So, I mean, i mean that's that's amazing money and would really help, you know, us kick on and spend more money because we need to broaden the squad.
00:24:00
James
and But then as you go down... we We were talking Europa League, possibly about 30 million, something like that, mentioning the comments if you've you've got the exact number. So that kind of halves Maranakis' spend. And then if you go to Conference League, I don't think his spend would really be much more than he'd be doing anyway.
00:24:23
James
it Would 10 million or 15 million for getting into the Conference really League really be the catalyst to spend another 150
00:24:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I think, i mean, what would probably be the most important thing is that, of course, PSR calculations are done on the last three years. And this is the first time our last three years include Premier League broadcasting money.
00:24:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, that's probably going to be the biggest thing. of course, when we were caught out by it last year, that's because in our accounts, we had had two in the last three years, was two in the Championship, one in the Premier League, and we were spending, as if we'd been in the Premier League, the whole three years in that PSR calculation.
00:24:58
James
Yeah.
00:24:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think the main difference, as well as you're either very varying boosts for three European competitions, the fact that we've made profits the Brennan Johnson money is included now on the account, and Nia Kata, and Lacordemus, and Mangala as well, plus three years of TV money.
00:25:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think that's why will appear. bigger

Transfer Strategy: Seeking Hungry Talent

00:25:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
the spend again because that three-year clock has essentially reset. Now in Marinakis, I don't he'll risk a points deduction again, but I think it'll be a bigger spend than the last summer when it was really just Anderson and Milenkovic who came in.
00:25:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
know there's Jotter and Soz over there on on small fees and have made small impacts really. So I think it'll be in the numbers, it'll be similar to the first summer. I don't, but I don't, wouldn't like to see it a Darwin Nunez, someone who's dropping down from one of the top clubs. I want to see at only players stepping up.
00:25:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
um so Who Forrest is their reward and not their failure from for being at a bit a bigger club. So I think the signings likes of Jesse Lingard being the first name who comes to mind from that first year.
00:26:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we have learned a lesson.
00:26:10
James
Well, still up.
00:26:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think there'll be another Lingard. But yeah, players like
00:26:14
James
well so up
00:26:19
James
Fabrizio Romano announced today that Cunha to United is pretty much a done deal. and So will the let go De Lapp go as well? um you know Possibly not.
00:26:33
James
So maybe he's still on the market. Arsenal are still looking for a yeah striker as well, though. and But nice, young, hungry striker and would be well-written.
00:26:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think De Lapp, because of his similarities to Chris Wood, in that he's a traditional number nine, wouldn't necessitate a change in system, which whichever of the two of those playing, at least you've got two similar players, maybe slightly more mobile, but he's not one of these converted wingers, De Lapp, he is an out-and-out striker, which I think would certainly be the addition to the squad alongside Wood and Tyra, whatever happens to him once he recovers.
00:26:50
James
Yeah.
00:27:07
James
yeah
00:27:13
James
Yeah, i don't think I don't think he'd fit Arsenal anyway. Arsenal try and dribble the ball into the back of the net and build through and and all sorts of things. I don't think that term you know once he gets on the edge of the box with ah eleven of the opposition behind the ball, he's not the player that...
00:27:30
James
It's not his game. And that' we've we've always said that's why people like Ilanga and Hudson-Odoi and Wood have thrived at Forest, because we're playing their game. you know we We put Ilanga and Hudson-Odoi on the ball with 50 yards of green space in front of them and say run.
00:27:46
James
Whereas at some of these other the bigger clubs, I say bigger clubs, more recently successful clubs like United and Chelsea, um They build the play more slowly um and you've got to take people on all the time and different things like that. And I'm not saying they can't. I'm just saying, you know, probably nine times out 10, they can run and outrun their marker, whereas probably only six or seven times out of 10, they can, you know, skill them and and get past. So play to their strengths. And I think De Laat, as you said, traditional number nine, he'd do well.
00:28:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Forrest are certainly an attractive club. They're not a club where you're going to not know who the manager is going to be come October or you're not going sign in July and sign five more players in your position in August. I

Forest's Player of the Season: Nominee Highlights

00:28:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
think Forrest are stable now and that's been sort of replicated and before we go by the Premier League Player of the Season nominees. So nominated for Young Player of the Year is Alanga.
00:28:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
and nominated for Player of the Year, Chris Wood and Morgan Gibbs-White. um And if you would ask lot Forest fans, I'm going to ask you, James, who would be your Forest Player of the Year? Would it be any of those three?
00:28:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got so many good players to choose from that. The nominees for Premier League, Player of the Year, don't even include Milenkovic, it should be my personal Player of the Year.
00:29:05
James
I'll honest with you, Matt Sells.
00:29:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep, sales as well.
00:29:09
James
We would not be in this position. um You can go through everyone like that. Sells with 13 clean sheets, hopefully 14 by the weekend. Wood with 20 goals. you know and The assists coming from midfield from Gibbs-White. Milenkovic and Murillo just standing like a red wall in the middle of defence constantly. And and there their numbers are astronomical. Milenkovic has outscored the majority of strikers in the Premier League and this season. so it's so yeah it's It's hard to pick, but I think I'd go for Sells.
00:29:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, maybe when the, you're right, he's neck neck with David Raya with a game to go and you'd certainly hope that Sells gets that 14th clean sheet on on Sunday. But yeah, think Sells and Milankovic would also be shout out to me maybe when it comes to the team of the season, not just their play with the season nominees, but the team of the season.
00:30:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
i would certainly expect to see both Sells and Milankovic in that Premier League team of the season.
00:30:03
James
yeah
00:30:07
James
yeah And I'm glad we've not been hearing rumours about Milankovic moving on either because the guy is just unreal. Like early shout for captain if Gibbs-White goes um and Yates isn't.
00:30:19
James
we've We've kind of had a de facto captain in Gibbs-White and Yates gets it and comes on.
00:30:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah.
00:30:24
James
think the same thing, Milankovic de facto captain.
00:30:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so one thing that happens, I always find it not funny, but like whenever Gibbs White starts with the captain armband, Yates comes on for, I don't know, Anderson or Dominguez and Gibbs White always, like good schoolboy, takes that armband off and gives it to Yates.
00:30:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm sure it was Milenkovic the captain, Milenkovic would have none of that. but I know I've started with the captain, you're a s sub, I'm not ripping my captains armband off and giving it to you, I'm keeping it for the ninety s
00:30:50
James
Yeah, probably. Probably. and but I mean, what if why did West Ham players try and mix it with Milenkovic at the weekend? um i mean, come on, guys.

Final Game Predictions: Forest vs. Chelsea

00:30:59
James
If you're going to choose one player, you you don't choose the Serbenator.
00:31:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:31:04
James
So should we do predictions for for Chelsea?
00:31:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, is that if if we don't get the chance to speak again beforehand, I mean, I'm going to say 2-1 Forest. I think it'll be very similar game to what we saw yesterday. We'll take the early lead, but we'll be hanging on just about towards the end. How about you?
00:31:22
James
You know I'm going to say actually 3-0 Forrest. And I'll tell you for why, young man. Because I think Gibbs White's his last game for Forrest at home. He's going to give everything. He's either going to get a hat-trick or a red card, let's be honest.
00:31:36
James
Matt Sells is hanging on for dear life to the Golden Glove. David Rea at Arsenal is playing against Southampton. So I think it's a given that Arsenal are going to get a clean sheet.
00:31:48
James
i So the only way for him to, he'd have to share the Golden Glove with Raya, both on 14 clean sheets. So he's going to be absolutely immense in defence.
00:31:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:31:59
James
Defenders are going to be, obviously, putting everything on the line. There's the whole Taiwo kind of angle to this and doing it for Taiwo, emotions and different things. i think it's it's going to go, and you know, it's going to go one way or another. It's going to be overwhelming and we're going to not turn up and... and the occasion is going to get the better of us or we're going to turn up and smash them because they've not got Jackson.
00:32:26
James
um Yes, they've got Palmer, um you know, and a couple of others that can can attack. But I just said they've been hit a miss. We've been hit miss recently. But I think at the city ground, we can bring the noise, bring the TIFO and get it done.
