Welcome to Prime Space, a Prime Coaching Academy podcast with your host, Elias Couttori.

Importance of Session Agreements

00:00:14
Speaker
And hello, coaches.
00:00:15
Speaker
Thank you again for listening.
00:00:18
Speaker
Today, we are going to talk about a hot topic in coach training.
00:00:24
Speaker
The session agreement.
00:00:27
Speaker
The ICF has this core competency, establishes and maintains agreements, our core competency number three.
00:00:37
Speaker
And that competency really encompasses all agreements, right?
00:00:42
Speaker
All sorts of agreements.
00:00:43
Speaker
The importance of having an agreement.
00:00:46
Speaker
with a client.
00:00:47
Speaker
We're going to enter this partnership.
00:00:50
Speaker
It's important that we have an agreement of what this partnership is going to be about.
00:00:55
Speaker
But one thing that is so unique, perhaps, or beautiful about the coaching process and the structure of the coaching conversation is this idea of a session agreement, which means every coaching conversation that we're going to have with the client
00:01:17
Speaker
We need to know what we are working towards.
00:01:23
Speaker
What is this about?
00:01:26
Speaker
we are going to spend this time together, half an hour, 45 minutes, 60 minutes a day, I don't know.
00:01:34
Speaker
Towards what?
00:01:35
Speaker
Today specifically.
00:01:36
Speaker
I know that we have established an overarching agreement for the whole engagement, but today, out of this journey that we are going to, what is important for you, the client, to address?

Client-Centered Coaching

00:01:50
Speaker
It's such an imperative process of coaching, right?
00:01:56
Speaker
If we think of coaching as a process that is client-centered, a process that is about the development and the growth of the client,
00:02:13
Speaker
Of course, we want to ask the client, what is that you are working on?
00:02:21
Speaker
We are here to partner with you, right, in your process, in what is happening with you.
00:02:28
Speaker
So session agreement is crucial.
00:02:31
Speaker
And I'm giving you this because if you listen to episode number six, right, the previous episode for this, I advocate for the whole aspect of the why.
00:02:44
Speaker
We don't want to go in and establish a session agreement just because we were told so or just because, you know, there are these rules of coaching that tells us to...
00:02:58
Speaker
to establish a secession agreement.
00:03:00
Speaker
We want to establish a secession agreement because there is a reason for that.
00:03:03
Speaker
And we understand the reason behind it.
00:03:07
Speaker
And I think it's important for us to revisit that, the why.
00:03:10
Speaker
Why do...
00:03:13
Speaker
We coaches say that it's important for every session for us to spend, to put some concerted effort to support the client into this process of what is it that we are going to work on.
00:03:30
Speaker
And it's something that it's not to be taken lightly.
00:03:34
Speaker
A session agreement is not simply, oh, what is the topic of the conversation or what is the outcome and here we go.

Reflecting on Life Areas for Coaching

00:03:46
Speaker
We want depth in this process, including the process of establishing a session agreement.
00:03:54
Speaker
So we want to support the individual, we want to support our clients to really being able to access, to reach that place where they say, oh, I'm not.
00:04:07
Speaker
Out of everything that is happening in my life right now, out of everything that is happening at work, out of everything that is happening with my family, with myself, with my co-workers, with my team, with whatever it is, right?
00:04:21
Speaker
This is the place that I really need to reflect on.
00:04:26
Speaker
And I really need to broaden my perspective here so that I know I am a little bit more clear on how to proceed, right?
00:04:39
Speaker
So as you can see, the session agreement is a substantial and crucial part of the coaching process.
00:04:46
Speaker
Without a session agreement, without a clear and well-deserved, well-created session agreement, we are not going to be able to support the client substantially.
00:04:59
Speaker
And that's why it's such a hot topic in coach training, because for us to understand this process and for us to perfect, I don't know if that's the word, to really master this process or be skillful enough in this process, it takes time and it takes a thorough understanding of that.
00:05:23
Speaker
And the ICF has given us the gift of the core competency and the gift of the PCC markers, bars, and all of that to guide us through that.

Crafting Effective Session Agreements

00:05:34
Speaker
And if we go into these resources, we can see that there are a few areas that are important for us to understand.
00:05:46
Speaker
be mindful of when we are supporting our clients through this process.
00:05:51
Speaker
And you know those areas, right?
00:05:53
Speaker
What is the outcome?
00:05:57
Speaker
How are we going to know that we are there?
00:05:59
Speaker
The measures of success?
00:06:00
Speaker
What do we need to address here and resolve in order to reach this particular outcome for the session?
00:06:08
Speaker
And, you know, the PCC markers have given us, you know, what is the importance, the meaning of this for you?
00:06:14
Speaker
And I love that particular marker because this idea of supporting the client in investigating what is truly important here, what is the meaning?
00:06:26
Speaker
is usually an open door to a deeper conversation.
00:06:30
Speaker
It connects them to their values.
00:06:31
Speaker
It connects them to who they truly want to be and to who they are.
00:06:38
Speaker
So it's a beautiful point for us to cover there.
00:06:42
Speaker
And I say points to cover because I want to emphasize this.
00:06:47
Speaker
These four points that we have, especially in the PCC markers and in the competencies, of course,
00:06:54
Speaker
They are not simple questions to ask.
00:06:58
Speaker
If we simply ask the client, what is the outcome of the coaching conversation?
00:07:04
Speaker
What are the measures of success?
00:07:06
Speaker
What are the points that we need to resolve and cover here?
00:07:10
Speaker
What is the importance?
00:07:11
Speaker
If we ask these questions prescriptively, most likely they are going to fall flat or the client is going to answer them superficially.
00:07:22
Speaker
So don't consider these points as simple questions, but consider them as points to cover.
00:07:29
Speaker
And there may be several questions that we need to ask in order to support the client into getting to that place.
00:07:39
Speaker
The bottom line of the session agreement is to support the client in accessing and verbalizing the crux of the matter.
00:07:52
Speaker
What is at the center here today that I want to investigate?
00:07:58
Speaker
That I want to pay attention to.
00:08:00
Speaker
That is our job.
00:08:01
Speaker
Our job is to support the client into getting there, accessing and verbalizing what is the crux of the matter.

Deep Exploration in Coaching

00:08:10
Speaker
How we are going to do this, we have these four points that the ICF has given us that's beautiful.
00:08:16
Speaker
And these four points is to guide us through that process in supporting the client to get there.
00:08:23
Speaker
That's the idea.
00:08:24
Speaker
So just because we ask question one, question two, question three, does not necessarily mean that we establish a session agreement.
00:08:32
Speaker
Because the client may have answered that question, if the client was able to answer the question, the client may have answered that question superficially.
00:08:40
Speaker
So what else can I do here?
00:08:44
Speaker
What other questions can I ask?
00:08:47
Speaker
What observations can I make here that will support the client to go a little deeper into that process?
00:08:55
Speaker
So the one example that I give in coach training all the time is...
00:08:59
Speaker
You start the coaching conversation and say, okay, what are we going to talk about here today?
00:09:02
Speaker
And the client comes and says, well, I have a meeting tomorrow and I really need an outline for this meeting.
00:09:12
Speaker
I'm going to lead this meeting tomorrow and I really need to be very clear of the outline for the meeting.
00:09:17
Speaker
Well, at a surface level, okay, so here is the outcome.
00:09:20
Speaker
The outcome is an outline.
00:09:23
Speaker
But is that what the client really wants?
00:09:25
Speaker
Right?
00:09:27
Speaker
If we don't bring enough curiosity, we would stop there.
00:09:31
Speaker
But if we bring curiosity, we can start asking the client a little bit more about the meeting, a little bit about this outline.
00:09:39
Speaker
What will this outline provide you with?
00:09:41
Speaker
How do you imagine this outline?
00:09:43
Speaker
What is the importance of this outline?
00:09:45
Speaker
Let's ask a few more questions, right?
00:09:48
Speaker
And in this...
00:09:50
Speaker
Example, this analogy that I give to my students, the client starts reflecting a little bit more, explaining a little bit more, describing the situation a little bit more.
00:10:03
Speaker
And the client says, well, my boss is going to be present in this meeting.
00:10:08
Speaker
We'll attend this meeting.
00:10:10
Speaker
And this meeting is very important for my career development.
00:10:14
Speaker
And I want to feel a little bit more anchored.
00:10:18
Speaker
I want to feel a little bit more solid here, feel inside that I can do this.
00:10:25
Speaker
Oh, so what the client is searching here is not necessarily a simple outline.
00:10:32
Speaker
Come on, this is an experienced professional.
00:10:36
Speaker
They can put together an outline in five minutes, right?
00:10:41
Speaker
They don't need my help for that.
00:10:44
Speaker
But what the client is really searching or the client believes that that outline is going to give them that groundedness, that feeling of security when they go in front of the group and they are able to perform.
00:10:59
Speaker
That's what the client is looking for.
00:11:01
Speaker
So if I didn't bring curiosity to the process, I wouldn't be able to support the client to get into that place.
00:11:09
Speaker
And it may be that that sense of groundedness, that sense of security that the client is looking for, will come from something completely different than a simple outline.
00:11:20
Speaker
So that is the artistry of establishing a session agreement.
00:11:24
Speaker
We are not simply there to ask question one, two, three.
00:11:29
Speaker
And in an environment where perhaps we are simply getting a recording for certification, maybe the other person, the client knows that we are recording, the client knows that we are going for a certification.
00:11:41
Speaker
So the client may give simple answers and it will be good enough.
00:11:48
Speaker
But in the real world, when we are coaching our clients, we are going to need to be a lot more skillful in providing that depth of discovery for that session agreement.
00:12:01
Speaker
And that is what we're aiming for.
00:12:05
Speaker
It's that depth of exploration.
00:12:09
Speaker
The session agreement is not just a preamble to the coaching conversation.
00:12:13
Speaker
The session agreement is part of that discovery.
00:12:16
Speaker
It's part of that developmental aspect of the client.
00:12:20
Speaker
For the client to reach that point where they can verbalize, this is where I need to go.
00:12:27
Speaker
This is my growing edge.

Thoughtful Session Agreements for Development

00:12:30
Speaker
That alone is already tremendously valuable to the client in their developmental process.
00:12:38
Speaker
So let's support the client with that.
00:12:41
Speaker
And let's use these points that the ICF offers us as guiding posts for us to support the client in this process.
00:12:54
Speaker
This is the crux of the matter here and the point and the why of establishing a session agreement.
00:13:05
Speaker
How long it takes for a session agreement?
00:13:07
Speaker
I always ask this question.
00:13:09
Speaker
And I always say, as long as it takes, as long as it takes, as soon as possible.
00:13:17
Speaker
So we don't want to rush through the process of the session agreement.
00:13:21
Speaker
But also we don't want to miss the opportunity to support the client into arriving at the place, right?
00:13:30
Speaker
So this is the mastery.
00:13:32
Speaker
This is the artistry of establishing a session agreement.
00:13:35
Speaker
If at any point in a coaching conversation you feel that you're a little lost, you're not quite sure what questions to ask, most likely it's because the session agreement is not clear enough.
00:13:47
Speaker
So it's time for you to go back to these four points of the session agreement.
00:13:52
Speaker
Start asking, what are we aiming for here?
00:13:57
Speaker
Where are we going to go?
00:13:59
Speaker
What are we trying to get out of our conversation here today?
00:14:01
Speaker
What would be valuable for you today?
00:14:04
Speaker
What do you need right now?
00:14:06
Speaker
Support the client into going through all of this process and do this organically.
00:14:11
Speaker
And I would encourage you to reflect on this.
00:14:14
Speaker
Why?
00:14:15
Speaker
Why do we, the ICF, say that it's important for us to establish a session agreement with our clients all the time?
00:14:26
Speaker
And how can I support the client into creating this environment where they can really be able to access
00:14:33
Speaker
and verbalize what they're truly looking for in the moment.
00:14:41
Speaker
So there you have.
00:14:42
Speaker
Thank you so much.
00:14:43
Speaker
I hope this is valuable to you.
00:14:44
Speaker
Thank
