Coaching as a Philosophy

Welcome to Season 3 of PRIME SPACE. In this powerful opening episode, Elias invites us to explore coaching not just as a profession—but as a philosophy for living.

Using a real student conversation as the starting point, Elias challenges the idea that coaching is limited to 1-on-1 sessions. Instead, he proposes that the core principles of coaching—respect, trust, belief, self-worth, humility, and authenticity—are universally applicable and profoundly transformational.

You’ll hear how embracing this mindset can shift the way we view others, ourselves, and every human interaction. More than a technique, coaching is a way of being—one that honors humanity at its core.

If you’re on a journey to become a better coach, this episode offers a foundational lens for growth and practice.

Introduction to Season 3

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to PRIME SPACE a PRIME Coaching Academy podcast with your host, Elias Scultori And hello, coaches. It's good to be back and be here with you. We are starting season three today, and I am so excited. There you there are so many wonderful things that I'm planning for this season and guests and topics to talk about.
00:00:34
Speaker
Thank you for being here and thank you for embarking on this journey with me. Today,

Inspiration for Episode Topic

00:00:40
Speaker
i want to start our conversation here by sharing with you ah conversation that I had with a former student a couple of couple of days ago.
00:00:52
Speaker
And that conversation made me think of a couple of things and I said, I think that I i need to share that. ah in the Prime Space podcast. And I think I'm going to make that as the first episode of this season.
00:01:09
Speaker
You know, when I was having this conversation with a student, and and it's someone that is still in coach training and trying to ah build their coaching practice.

Beyond One-on-One Coaching

00:01:24
Speaker
And as we were talking, I noticed that this person was very focused on one getting one-on-one clients, building their clientele. Where do I get my clients?
00:01:39
Speaker
Where do I have these one-on-one conversations, more of these one-on-one conversations? And this is a highly skilled professional with a tremendous background,
00:01:56
Speaker
diverse background ah with lots to share and and opportunities and connections. And as we were talking, i mentioned to him and I encouraged him to think of coaching beyond the one-on-one conversations.

Human Connection in Coaching

00:02:24
Speaker
And I share that with him because i am a firm believer that the proposition of coaching is applicable everywhere.
00:02:36
Speaker
Yes, in coach training, we learn and we are focused on the specific coaching conversation model. But the foundation of this framework is is much deeper than just markers and bars.
00:02:58
Speaker
At the core, coaching is all about humanity. It's about being human and relating with the other in a human-to-human manner.
00:03:15
Speaker
So I would love to talk about this because I think that this is a ah ah crucial point that oftentimes we miss or we don't pay attention or we don't notice that this is what we are addressing when we go through our coach training and when we go through our coach coach journey.

Core Values of Coaching

00:03:36
Speaker
the is There are core concepts that are foundational to everything that we do in coaching. And to me, that is the identity of coaching. And the 101 is just an application of this these concepts.
00:03:55
Speaker
And I would like to divide these concepts into two groups. One is the way we view the other. the other individual, and ah the other part is how we view ourselves.
00:04:09
Speaker
So let's start with the way we view the other. At the core of coaching is this concept of respect.
00:04:19
Speaker
Accepting the other person, the other human being, for who they truly are, holistically speaking. Believing in the value of every individual.
00:04:35
Speaker
Honoring the person in front of us with everything they bring to the table. Their gifts, their historical background, their belief systems.
00:04:47
Speaker
their view of the world, their peculiarities, their quirks. We accept and honor this individual for who they truly are without trying to fix it or without trying to put them into the way we view the world and we what we think is right.
00:05:09
Speaker
But we accept that other individual for who they truly are. And pay attention to the way I'm saying these phrases here because this is not just the client that is in front of us. I'm saying accepting the other person, the value of every individual.
00:05:27
Speaker
So respect for people, for who they are and where they are in their journey. is a core foundation of coaching.
00:05:39
Speaker
Trust is another one. Trust that the other person will do their best. Trust that the other person is ready to do their part. Trust that the other person will respect us.
00:05:55
Speaker
Trust that the other is well-intentioned.
00:05:59
Speaker
And I'm not saying that trust here that we need to be naive.
00:06:05
Speaker
right But there is that ah aspect of assuming positive regard. i trust in you. We are here to build a partnership. There is no partnership without trust.
00:06:19
Speaker
So coaching is inviting us to live in the space of trust. Belief is another one.
00:06:31
Speaker
Belief that the other is capable. Belief that the other is resourceful. believe that the other person ah has potential and they are responsible for their own choices.
00:06:44
Speaker
This is so beautiful because, ah you know, oftentimes in coaching and in coach training, sometimes a new coach, you know, says like, oh, I'm not i i'm not supposed to give advice.
00:06:59
Speaker
I can't give advice. I can't tell people what to do. it's And i I always say this. It's not that you can't give advice. It's not that you can't tell people.
00:07:11
Speaker
The point here is that if you truly live in this aspect of respect, trust, belief, there is no need for advice. There is no place for advice.
00:07:28
Speaker
There is no place for me to give lectures and tell people what to do and think that I'm going to be bossing things people around or or that my point of view is better than others.
00:07:40
Speaker
right If we live in that ah space of respect, trust, and belief, advice is not even feasible. And that perhaps if we ah have the the inkling to give advice to tell, perhaps what's happening there is that we may need to check on the and how much respect we are having for this individual. how much How much trust are we putting on this person?
00:08:12
Speaker
How much we believe that this person can't?
00:08:19
Speaker
So these are the three points. I'm sure that there are others and there are other ways of ah verbalizing this philosophy. But these these are the three points that I think are fundamental ah to the coaching philosophy as the way we view the others.
00:08:35
Speaker
But there is the other side is also, that coaching has an invitation of how we view ourselves. Coaching is a partnership, right? So it's not just one person. It's not just the client. We are there too.
00:08:47
Speaker
So how do we view ourselves?
00:08:51
Speaker
And coaching invites us to build a level of self-worth where there is no need for us to prove anything, no need for us to boost or reaffirm our values.
00:09:10
Speaker
I know what my value is, and I don't need to show my values as a badge of honor everywhere I go.
00:09:19
Speaker
I don't need to put up an image or manage perceptions. There is an intrinsic certainty of who I am that there is no need to prove.
00:09:37
Speaker
Coaching invites us to a level of humility. I know that I'm still learning, that I'm eager to learn actually.
00:09:50
Speaker
And that gives me the courage to embrace a beginner's mind. Courage to not know, to not have the answer.
00:10:04
Speaker
Coaching invites us to embrace and work on a daily basis on our authenticity. How are we showing up?
00:10:15
Speaker
This level of self-worth gives us the courage to show up every day with authenticity, transparency and vulnerability.
00:10:27
Speaker
I'm open and I'm ready to connect. I'm here fully in service of the other.
00:10:42
Speaker
As you can see, these points, both the view that we have of others and the view that we have with ourselves, these points are not necessarily applicable only to the moment that we have coaching. These these points are applicable and of tremendous value everywhere we go.
00:11:04
Speaker
In coach training, yes, we put tremendous focus on the coaching conversational framework. But that is just one application, one possible manifestation of this philosophy.
00:11:18
Speaker
At PRIME Coaching Academy,

Prime Coaching Academy's Philosophy

00:11:19
Speaker
when we start our Level 1 program, day one of our intensives, we spend the whole day focused on what we call the tenets of coaching.
00:11:30
Speaker
And we address directly and indirectly some of these points that I'm um' talking about here, because we believe that this is the foundational aspect of everything.
00:11:42
Speaker
if If we as coaches understand these points and we live by them, the technical aspects, the bars, the markers, all of the competencies, the sub-competencies, all of that, it's easy because they all come from these concepts.
00:12:09
Speaker
If you want to be a better coach, start by examining and reflecting on these concepts every day.
00:12:22
Speaker
What is the level of respect that you have for every human being?
00:12:31
Speaker
every human being. If I drop you in the middle of the Amazon forest to and you meet one of the natives, how do you see that person in relationship to you?
00:12:43
Speaker
Is it a partnership, an equal partnership, or are you better than less than? If I drop you in the middle of of ah a big party at Buckingham Palace in in England,
00:12:58
Speaker
and you meet someone over there, how do you see that other individual? let You as less than or more than? Coaching is a partnership, and coaching is asking us to see every human being with respect and as equal.
00:13:16
Speaker
How much do you believe in the potential of your neighbor? And then there is the the definition, what who is your neighbor, right?
00:13:28
Speaker
Where is your level of self-worth, of self-love? And the need to use your value as a badge of honor to prove of your value everywhere you go in every conversation.
00:13:44
Speaker
How much of all of this is trumping in the space of others?
00:13:54
Speaker
Imagine if we leave lived these concepts in every relationship, in every interaction, in every activity, in every arena It doesn't matter where you are, the job the job that we have The activities we engage in coaching as a philosophy is inviting us to first be more in touch with our own humanity and second to relate with every single person recognizing their humanity as well.

Coaching as a Global Change Agent

00:14:30
Speaker
It's not something that we can turn on or turn off only when a client shows up in front of us. It's something that we need to work on every day. And that's why I believe that coaching has the potential to transform our world.
00:14:46
Speaker
And you are an ambassador of this philosophy. Regardless of where you are, the business or the job that you have, your job as a coach is to figure out how you're going to live and manifest these concepts.
00:15:03
Speaker
That is coach training. that is the developmental journey of a coach that is coaching expertise so if you are applying for your ACC applying for your PCC especially if you are applying for your MCC this is not about bars and markers this is about the way you see yourself and the world in each other through these through this lens
00:15:30
Speaker
What happens with your clients 101 is just a reflection of this practice and this philosophy. So
