For years, coaches have embraced the mantra "there is no coaching without action.” But what if the word *action* no longer captures the depth of what truly happens in a coaching conversation?

In this episode of PRIME SPACE, host Elias Scultori, MCC, challenges the traditional view and introduces a more expansive concept—movement. From subtle shifts in mindset to intentional pauses, Elias explores how transformation can take many forms beyond tangible tasks.

Discover why reframing action as movement honors the richness of human development, keeps coaching aligned with its core purpose, and empowers clients to carry their insights forward in intentional, life-shaping ways.

Tune in and reimagine what it means to support your clients as they step into their next chapter.

Introduction to Prime Space Podcast

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to Prime Space, a Prime Coaching Academy podcast with your host, Elias Scultori Coaches, you've probably heard me say many times, actually, there is no coaching without action.
00:00:25
Speaker
This was a very common saying during the early days of coaching as a profession.

The Power of Coaching and Action

00:00:33
Speaker
I remember hearing that many times when I was in my coach training.
00:00:39
Speaker
And I love it because it makes total sense. i I think that one of the most outstanding skills of a coach and a crucial part of the coaching conversational framework is is that moment and the the ability of the coach to support the client in clearly designing what's next, what's next for themselves.
00:01:10
Speaker
In this fact, in this moment, I think that is coaching demonstrating the power of applying the learning generated during the coaching conversation and applying that in the client's lives.
00:01:29
Speaker
I've said this on episode 23, actually, of Prime Space.
00:01:37
Speaker
And i i encourage you to go back and listen to that episode. The title of the episode is Action. And I said there that reflection alone is not enough. We can spend...
00:01:51
Speaker
an hour, hours, weeks, months, years, reflecting, reflecting, reflecting, and even considering possible things that for change, ah possible opportunities of of doing things different.

Translating Insights into Action

00:02:09
Speaker
But if there is no application of all of these insights, Well, yeah, we just got an insight. We just got a broader awareness and a different perspective. But if that insight, if that new awareness it doesn't bear fruit, what's the point?
00:02:30
Speaker
It's just a collection of awareness and a collection of insights. So we say, and from the beginning of this coaching profession, we say that there is no coaching without action because we are there emphasizing the crucial, the importance of the application of the exploration. So coaching is an exploratory process. It's a process of reflection.
00:02:58
Speaker
But reflection alone is not enough. We can reflect forever. But if we don't support the client into an application of that reflection, it's reflection for nothing.
00:03:10
Speaker
So it the the emphasis on the translation of that insight into the day-to-day is one of the crucial skills of a coach.

Exploring the Concept of Action

00:03:21
Speaker
the skill of supporting the client to design what will come after the session what will happen after the session now that you have this insight this awareness this different perspective what's going to happen the word that we give to this is action however the word action can be problematic The immediate understanding that we have of the word action is that the client will have to do something.
00:04:01
Speaker
And usually it's something tangible, something substantial, and they' there's something substantial and clear. um And that is not really always the case.
00:04:16
Speaker
the client may not be ready for something tangible to happen. They have all of these insights, but they are not quite ready to take a substantial step forward.
00:04:29
Speaker
And that is totally fine, right? The more we grow and the more we learn about human development, the more we realize that the result and the translation of the awareness achieved during a coaching conversation are not always tangible.
00:04:49
Speaker
I like to say that action comes in many different disguises. The result of the coaching conversation can take many different forms. ah The client may decide that the best course of action, quote unquote, is to stop.
00:05:07
Speaker
or to take a step back, or to wait. Perhaps the best thing to do is to get used to this new idea, or feel a little bit more familiar with this new mindset.
00:05:22
Speaker
Sometimes the best course of ah of action, quote-unquote, is to reflect a little bit more, or to allow that insight to mature, and many, many more.
00:05:35
Speaker
The possibilities are truly endless here.

Introducing the Prime Model

00:05:40
Speaker
That's why i'm thinking that this word action is getting a little old and it may need an update.
00:05:50
Speaker
In the Prime model and in the Prime Plus model, if you're familiar with with them, those are the two models that we use at Prime Coaching Academy, one for level one, one for level two.
00:06:01
Speaker
these These models are nothing different. yeah They are grounded in the ICF core competencies. The the models, I created them and I spoke about them many times here at Prime Space. and the The models is just a way to verbalize these core competencies.
00:06:20
Speaker
and put them into a nutshell so that it's easier for the coach to apply the fundamental concepts of the ICF core competencies.
00:06:31
Speaker
So that's the that's the reason for the prime model. In the prime model, I purposely, but there is a ah section that we talk about this this movement, this this action movement, and I purposely did not label that section action. I labeled that section movement.
00:06:50
Speaker
And I think that movement is explains this concept much more clearly than the confusion that action may ah create.
00:07:02
Speaker
ah What is movement, right? What is the movement generated by the awareness that surfaces During the coaching conversation, that's the idea. So we have these insights, we have this awareness, we have this reflection, we can see the situation more more broadly.
00:07:21
Speaker
What is the fruit of this? What is the result of that? And as I said, can be many different things. And there is always ah movement. It's inevitable. There is always a movement.
00:07:35
Speaker
Unless the client dies right a second after you know the session is over. And sorry for you know that that language. But ah unless there is a complete stop, the client is always continuing their lives.
00:07:53
Speaker
And what we are trying to do there is like, what is the influence of this conversation into the way the client is continuing?
00:08:04
Speaker
And the client always continues. It can be that the client is going to say, okay I'm going to completely ah dismiss all of the insights that we got here in this coaching conversation and I'm going to ah go on about my life by doing nothing.
00:08:20
Speaker
That is movement. That is an intentional choice that the client did. And that is the intention, the purpose of movement.

Intentional Steps Post-Session

00:08:31
Speaker
The intention of this movement part is to give the client the opportunity to be intentional about what comes next.
00:08:41
Speaker
Otherwise, as I said, there is ah great likelihood that all the great exploration, the all the great reflection that happened during the coaching conversation is going to vanish, is going to disappear.
00:08:56
Speaker
And then there will be no fruit, there will be no value of the coaching conversation. It's just an insight for insight's sake. Coaching... is a movement-forward process.
00:09:10
Speaker
Coaching is about development, not just development for development's sake. it's The idea is conscious development, intentional development. Coaching is about growth, intentional growth towards who the client wants to become.
00:09:25
Speaker
like Coaching is about getting unstuck. Coaching is about being alive. Coaching is about life, and life is movement.
00:09:34
Speaker
even when we decide to stop. Because even the decision to stop is a decision.
00:09:44
Speaker
And this is something that I have become increasingly aware in coaching. There are certain words, there are certain jargons and certain truths that we have established very early in the formation of the coaching profession that as we develop, um I don't know, may they may no longer be the best way to describe what what the intent really is and what we are discovering to be the power And action is perhaps you know one of the number one words that i know i think that there is a there is a need for an upgrade.
00:10:24
Speaker
um And it here's the idea, of whether if you continue to use the word action or if you if we start changing this this labeling, this part of coaching, this concept of coaching to something else, movement to me seems appropriate, but something else, I don't know.
00:10:41
Speaker
The most important thing is for us to pay attention to its meaning. We don't want the superficial definition of action. to influence how we are or are not supporting our client in committing to an intentional translation of their insights.
00:11:02
Speaker
That's why we say that if there is no action, there is no coaching. There is no coaching without action because the crucial importance of this process. So please don't dismiss this movement. Don't dismiss supporting your client into that translation.
00:11:19
Speaker
by looking at action on a superficial level. There is depth and an importance of this process, which is to support the client into this translation, into the application, into bringing value ah or making it real, the value of the coaching conversation.

Reflections on Coaching's Impact

00:11:44
Speaker
Isn't this powerful? I hope that you notice how powerful these concepts are. If we stop and pay attention, there is so much depth in what we do, and i continue to be amazed ah by the coaching process.
00:12:00
Speaker
And I thank you for walking this journey with me. ah Let's go. Let's go on and and support our clients, figure out what their next step, their next chapter is, and support them into this translation of the insight into the next chapter.
00:12:23
Speaker
Thank you for listening and thank you for ah sharing these episodes with other coaches. Don't forget to subscribe. Perhaps write a review for us. That would be wonderful.
00:12:34
Speaker
And I will see you next time. Take care.
