Introduction and Background
00:00:14
Speaker
Hello, welcome or welcome back to the Feel Your Feelings podcast.
00:00:17
Speaker
I'm your host, Victoria Macanjola.
00:00:19
Speaker
And today I am joined by Justin Shepard.
00:00:22
Speaker
Justin is a Houston-based content creator.
00:00:25
Speaker
He's the creator of Talented Ones.
00:00:28
Speaker
And we are both graduates of Sam Houston State University.
00:00:32
Speaker
And we're both currently grad students.
00:00:35
Speaker
So it's great to see you and catch up with you.
00:00:38
Speaker
We're actually doing this and making this happen.
00:00:40
Speaker
So I'm super excited to have you today.
00:00:43
Speaker
How are you feeling?
00:00:46
Speaker
I'm super blessed.
00:00:48
Speaker
I've had a great day.
00:00:51
Speaker
Now we're doing this.
00:00:52
Speaker
We've been talking about this for a minute.
00:00:56
Speaker
Yeah, and having this conversation.
00:00:58
Speaker
I've been all over the place, but I'm glad to finally get a chance to kind of sit down, have this conversation.
00:01:04
Speaker
And just talk, you know, just talk experiences, talk life and just, you know, give the fans something to maybe, you know, something that can be on their mind and their ears that it can appease.
00:01:15
Speaker
You know what I'm saying?
00:01:17
Speaker
And this is the host to host series.
00:01:19
Speaker
And this is a series where I talk to fellow podcasters, podcast hosts, media personalities like yourself, Justin, and to give people a sense of how they can get to where you are.
00:01:31
Speaker
So I think it's super fascinating and I'm excited to hear from you.
Personal Themes: Consistency and Patience
00:01:35
Speaker
So first and foremost, I'm curious to know in this current season that you're in, what's one word that sticks with you and how are you prioritizing it?
00:01:46
Speaker
um consistency consistency is probably the word that sticks out to me the most that's right now that's just big on myself and uh for my team as well um just for everybody out there um i go by jay shep on camera um a lot of a lot of things what talents was media out here in houston we've been doing stuff for a minute we've known stuff for a while but um
00:02:12
Speaker
We've just been really trying to figure out the business.
00:02:15
Speaker
We've had a lot of ups and a lot of downs.
00:02:18
Speaker
And I wouldn't even call them downs.
00:02:19
Speaker
I call them lessons, you know, lessons of blessings and things of that nature.
00:02:24
Speaker
So pretty much we've just been learning over the years and over the times.
00:02:28
Speaker
And we're starting to see a lot of things starting to come together in a lot of different areas.
00:02:33
Speaker
This year has been a big year for us so far, and we're continuing to make it a big year.
00:02:38
Speaker
So I would just say consistency.
00:02:39
Speaker
That would be my main word right now for what I've been thinking about.
00:02:47
Speaker
For me, I would say my one word is patience.
00:02:51
Speaker
And I'm still learning how to prioritize it.
00:02:56
Speaker
But one of the main things that I try to do is by being still.
00:02:59
Speaker
So you know how like in the Bible, how God says to be still and let me do my thing.
00:03:04
Speaker
That's kind of what I've been trying to do in this season is not to put too many things.
00:03:09
Speaker
expectations or rush into things the way I want to do them, but kind of let go and step back and let God take the wheel, Jesus take the wheel, right?
00:03:18
Speaker
And do what he does.
00:03:20
Speaker
And really, it's kind of led me to all of these different places and things that I wouldn't think that I would have been doing at
00:03:27
Speaker
the moment just having this conversation with you right now is like kind of full circle it's like we took classes together like and now we're like we're both kind of we're hosting things and and getting out of our comfort zone so it's really cool thing to see you know we're definitely in our bag you know so we're in me and my father's called we're in our duffel bag right now it's a duffel bag i like that yeah we're in our duffel bag right now it's the season it's a season of growth it's a season of um
00:03:55
Speaker
I think it's the season of when you put in a lot of work, you know, you just talked about God too.
00:04:00
Speaker
When you put in a lot of work and I think you pray for, you know, these opportunities and things, but God just doesn't give you what you putting in the work before.
00:04:08
Speaker
Cause you know, the same prayer without works is just wishful thinking.
00:04:12
Speaker
So when you put in your 10,000 hours, you know, you start eventually getting the situations where you start reaping the benefits of the work you put in.
00:04:25
Speaker
And that leads me to something else I was curious to ask you about, which is what does staying ready so you don't have to get ready mean to you?
Staying Ready: Insights from Sports and Life
00:04:34
Speaker
Stay ready so you don't have to get ready.
00:04:36
Speaker
That just means that's kind of like what I said about the 10,000 hours.
00:04:39
Speaker
You put in the hours like I played sports growing up.
00:04:42
Speaker
I even played football my freshman year at Sam Houston.
00:04:45
Speaker
And the one thing you always have to do is when you're in the gym and you're working out or you're working towards anything in life,
00:04:53
Speaker
You always like that.
00:04:54
Speaker
Just like if you don't put in the work, how can you be ready for that moment?
00:04:57
Speaker
You know what I'm saying?
00:04:58
Speaker
You never know when the opportunity is going to come.
00:05:00
Speaker
So it's like you just always ready.
00:05:01
Speaker
So whenever the time comes and the opportunity moves, you just have to jump on it.
00:05:05
Speaker
So that's what I would I would think about.
00:05:08
Speaker
Stay ready so you don't have to get ready.
00:05:13
Speaker
With anything we do, it's important to stay ready.
00:05:18
Speaker
I didn't think I would be going back to school at this time.
00:05:21
Speaker
I know we're both in grad school right now.
00:05:22
Speaker
You're at Texas Southern and I'm taking online classes right now.
00:05:27
Speaker
But staying ready, I think me putting myself in the mindset of being ready
00:05:33
Speaker
an eternal student.
00:05:34
Speaker
So like, I always know that I have something more to learn.
00:05:37
Speaker
Like even after graduating from grad school, I still kind of felt like there's more for me to learn.
00:05:44
Speaker
This isn't it, like this isn't the end of the road.
00:05:46
Speaker
I still want to keep learning and moving.
00:05:48
Speaker
So I think for me, it's just staying ready mentally and keeping my mind open to new possibilities.
00:05:55
Speaker
So yeah, I like it.
00:05:59
Speaker
So do you have a favorite interview that you've done so far?
Memorable Interviews and Challenges
00:06:03
Speaker
A favorite interview.
00:06:08
Speaker
I think it's the one that you would probably like, but it's the one that I'm also the maddest about, too, which is the Beverly Johnson interview that we had earlier this year.
00:06:18
Speaker
But that's the one I'm the most mad about because it's not because of her.
00:06:21
Speaker
She's an amazing woman.
00:06:23
Speaker
She's a legendary, a trailblazer.
00:06:25
Speaker
She's everything and such a nice, nice lady.
00:06:29
Speaker
Amazing sit-down interview.
00:06:31
Speaker
We had about 12 to 13 minutes with her.
00:06:34
Speaker
But the reason why I said it's the madness is because my SD card fried.
00:06:37
Speaker
But when there's a wheel, there's a way.
00:06:40
Speaker
I still got the SD card.
00:06:41
Speaker
We're going to get that footage back from it.
00:06:43
Speaker
Yeah, it just cost a pretty penny to get back.
00:06:47
Speaker
But nah, I would say that's probably my favorite interview because it's the full circle moment of like how the business even came about it.
00:06:56
Speaker
Like that interview was sprung on to me.
00:06:58
Speaker
It wasn't like I knew who that Beverly Johnson was or I knew the stakes of the situation.
00:07:03
Speaker
It was a situation where, um,
00:07:05
Speaker
There was a conference going on in Atlanta by a lady named Miss Diana Richardson Phillips.
00:07:15
Speaker
I'm going to get her last name right, Phillips.
00:07:18
Speaker
She invited talented ones out there to do interviews for that weekend for her Women in Business conference.
00:07:27
Speaker
And she had Beverly Johnson as her keynote speaker.
00:07:35
Speaker
And so we were able to kind of position ourselves into a way.
00:07:38
Speaker
I think we were just supposed to do red carpet interviews with her.
00:07:41
Speaker
And, like, we were able to position ourselves into her room that she had before she was getting ready to go into, like, before she was going to be the keynote speaker.
00:07:53
Speaker
So, like, the dudes, like, people were just letting us know, hey, you know, we're going to bring Beverly back.
00:07:56
Speaker
She won't be in this room.
00:07:57
Speaker
You know, we're going to bring Beverly back.
00:07:58
Speaker
She won't be in this room.
00:07:59
Speaker
And I'm just like, all right, cool.
00:08:00
Speaker
Because I understand what this is.
00:08:02
Speaker
And we're going to be in the room already set up.
00:08:04
Speaker
So whenever she gets in there and we got in there and I don't think we were necessarily supposed to get that 12 minute sit down.
00:08:12
Speaker
But I asked her a couple of questions.
00:08:14
Speaker
She answered them gracefully.
00:08:17
Speaker
And then she gave us a stamp of approval, not just like in person, but like even I heard back from Diana.
00:08:23
Speaker
She was like, yeah, you know, Beverly said that y'all are really, she loved y'all professionalism and how y'all carried y'allself and ran y'all business and did your thing.
00:08:32
Speaker
So which gave me the confidence to know, okay, cool.
00:08:38
Speaker
First of all, we negotiated to get out here.
00:08:42
Speaker
The opportunity kind of came to us and we capitalized on the opportunity when we got there on that part, you know what I'm saying?
00:08:51
Speaker
The job didn't get finished like how we wanted to, but everything happens in due time.
00:08:57
Speaker
I was literally just thinking that, like, I know you said, like, we weren't really supposed to, like, get in there and do the interview, but everything does happen for a reason.
00:09:06
Speaker
So, I mean, and the fact that she gave you guys such positive feedback afterwards had to have, like, felt good for you guys as well.
00:09:14
Speaker
Because my biggest thing was it was a different lane than who I've normally talked to.
00:09:18
Speaker
Like, we have credits beforehand.
00:09:21
Speaker
Like, we've talked to, like, big actors.
00:09:24
Speaker
The most notable one, I think, recently was Vanessa Bell Calloway.
00:09:28
Speaker
For those who watch Coming to America and things of that nature, you know, Vanessa Bell Calloway was the lady that's the queen to be.
00:09:35
Speaker
You know what I'm saying?
00:09:37
Speaker
We've talked to people off of Insecure, Rap Shit, people who've hosted on Nike, athletes, people that have signed to Warner and Def Jam and everything.
00:09:50
Speaker
We've talked to a lot of people, but to have a first of her kind,
00:09:54
Speaker
really the first black woman to be on the cover of Bo Magazine.
00:09:57
Speaker
When I did my history and my research on it, I was like, yo, this is a truly amazing sit down we get to have right here.
00:10:04
Speaker
And, you know, for us being young, talented on this media, I'm 26 years old owning this media company.
00:10:09
Speaker
My God brother came with me.
00:10:13
Speaker
And so, like, my God brother, he's 25.
00:10:15
Speaker
I got to text his mom, like, yo, your son is filming for, like, Beverly Johnson right now.
00:10:22
Speaker
You know, this is...
00:10:24
Speaker
I don't know what's happening, but something's happening here.
00:10:27
Speaker
So, like, we're going to keep going and we're going to keep on this grind.
00:10:30
Speaker
So, yeah, that's what I would say to them.
00:10:33
Speaker
That was my favorite moment so far because over the years, that was a full circle moment.
00:10:41
Speaker
And I'm curious to know, like, how were you able to establish
Building Trustworthy Teams
00:10:44
Speaker
Because like you're, like you said, 26, you're a CEO of your own media company.
00:10:48
Speaker
How did you go about getting a team set up around you that, number one, you could trust and people that you work well with?
00:10:57
Speaker
I think the thing is, first of all, it's trial and error because you can't work with everybody.
00:11:03
Speaker
You can't work with all your peers.
00:11:05
Speaker
You can't work with just anybody.
00:11:07
Speaker
Don't work with people you don't like.
00:11:08
Speaker
I don't believe in that rule.
00:11:11
Speaker
The big thing for us was just mainly like over the years, like it just happened organically.
00:11:16
Speaker
Started off with my line brother, Kelechi, who almost acted as a manager up front, but now he's the COO of our whole operation.
00:11:25
Speaker
But he was just sending me like people to interview, that people he knew.
00:11:30
Speaker
He was just setting up interviews.
00:11:32
Speaker
And I would go interview and knock them out of the park.
00:11:33
Speaker
And they was getting thousands of views in college.
00:11:36
Speaker
So I'm just like, oh, bro, you might have something going on here.
00:11:39
Speaker
And he just asked me, he wanted to keep doing that.
00:11:41
Speaker
He fell into the dream of it.
00:11:43
Speaker
And I was like, okay, cool.
00:11:44
Speaker
And he studied under some big-time artist managers, too, that were really doing well in Houston.
00:11:51
Speaker
So he teached it upon himself to do the work for the craft.
00:11:54
Speaker
So I got him, got my godbrother, who was a film major at Concordia.
00:12:01
Speaker
And he believed in the dream.
00:12:02
Speaker
That's literally like my little brother in the sense of real life.
00:12:05
Speaker
We were both only children.
00:12:07
Speaker
Got my co-host, Uncle Ed.
00:12:08
Speaker
Oh, well, his name is Mason.
00:12:10
Speaker
Let me shout out to Mason.
00:12:13
Speaker
My co-host on our podcast, when I first started, it was a radio show.
00:12:19
Speaker
When we added that part to the business, Uncle Lex,
00:12:23
Speaker
He's now the president of the company.
00:12:26
Speaker
He has a background in sales.
00:12:27
Speaker
So like all these people just came over time.
00:12:29
Speaker
So it's just a blessing to be honest with you.
00:12:35
Speaker
And that's something that I've strived to have is a team of people that not only do I like working with, but people that I trust and we all work together well, like a well-oiled machine.
00:12:49
Speaker
Okay, so you're studying at TSU.
00:12:51
Speaker
What are you studying?
00:12:52
Speaker
Are you studying business or?
00:12:54
Speaker
No, I'm actually studying professional communication, digital media.
00:12:58
Speaker
So I'm studying, yeah, I'm studying the craft.
00:13:03
Speaker
Like I have a goal to go down.
00:13:07
Speaker
I have a goal to be one of the best or most, I don't even want to say most known.
00:13:11
Speaker
I really want to go down as one of the best on-air talents of all time.
00:13:15
Speaker
Like I really have this goal.
00:13:17
Speaker
Like I've studied, I studied the greats all the time.
00:13:20
Speaker
Stephen A. Smith, Stuart Scott, Chris Berman, Sway in the Morning, Big Boys Neighborhood, Angie Martinez, Oprah, Dan Rather.
00:13:29
Speaker
Love Angie Martinez.
00:13:32
Speaker
Dan Rather, Michael Strahan, and like, who else could I say?
00:13:39
Speaker
Like, I'm a student.
00:13:42
Speaker
Even like the podcasters, like a Joe Budden now and things of that nature.
00:13:46
Speaker
Like, I'm a true student of the craft.
00:13:50
Speaker
And not just on a just so serious side, but even on the entertainment side, too, because you need both.
00:13:56
Speaker
Like, yo, I really study these guys and women and to really try to project myself on a level of like, yo, this is what you're striving for.
00:14:05
Speaker
Not just the money aspect or the fame aspect, but really just โ
00:14:14
Speaker
I want to be in that tier, you know what I'm saying?
00:14:17
Speaker
I'm 26, you know what I'm saying?
00:14:18
Speaker
We're both young, we're both 26.
00:14:20
Speaker
The thing of like, I'm trying to think about what, what am I going to be at 36, 46?
Studies and Negotiation Skills
00:14:25
Speaker
know, these people are going at an extremely long time in the industry.
00:14:29
Speaker
You know, how can I have that long lasting tenure of being an on-air host or being just on air in whatever facet, so.
00:14:42
Speaker
I'm also like you, a constant learner and I try to, I love watching interviews and I really, for me, I strive to be a better speaker, like in the way that I carry myself, in the way that I talk, in the way I speak to people and have conversations with people.
00:14:58
Speaker
So like Oprah Winfrey with Meghan Markle, she's a great speaker.
00:15:03
Speaker
I'm reading a book right now by Bruce Lee's daughter, Shannon, Shannon Lee.
00:15:08
Speaker
And just he talks about self-help, like when you help yourself, like you're helping other people and just wanting to carry myself in a way that is like true.
00:15:21
Speaker
I love his book and I highly recommend it.
00:15:23
Speaker
It's called Be Water, My Friend.
00:15:25
Speaker
But I also agree with you about.
00:15:29
Speaker
looking at looking in the mirror and like actually turning those skills towards myself because in the end they will end up leaving a bigger impact than than I can even imagine um so yeah I love that and I'm studying uh by the way I'm studying design business and technology so a little different a little different than mass comm before so with design business what does that like entail
00:15:59
Speaker
So, okay, so with design, so for me, I want to focus more on the business side.
00:16:05
Speaker
We can choose to specialize in any one of the three, but it's really a creative, a creator's academy to
00:16:16
Speaker
to kind of blend all three aspects of them.
00:16:19
Speaker
So with design, learning how to create graphics on like Adobe Illustrator, with business, I had a class yesterday about negotiation, whether that's negotiating a product or a deal that a good price for a product.
00:16:36
Speaker
And then technology, of course,
00:16:38
Speaker
But for me, I'm really just curious and open minded.
00:16:41
Speaker
I want to learn about all of those things because I think that they are our future in a minuscule sense, not minuscule, but like buying my first car.
00:16:51
Speaker
Like I want to know how to negotiate.
00:16:53
Speaker
I want to know how to have those skills to be able to do that effectively and not let like either my gender or my race actually hinder me from doing any of those things.
Journey over Destination: Intangible Impacts
00:17:14
Speaker
I had a really important question for you because you asked this question to all of your guests I noticed I think you know what it is you know what it is and this question is which one is more important to you the journey or the destination yeah that's funny Jay Shep it's funny my answer changes a lot
00:17:41
Speaker
But I think as of recently, I've been thinking maybe because I've been more on a spiritual journey.
00:17:48
Speaker
I feel like the answer is the journey always.
00:17:51
Speaker
My journey is going to always be more than the destination because you have to appreciate the road you're on to know where you're trying to go.
00:18:00
Speaker
So you can't just skip that.
00:18:01
Speaker
You can't skip the process.
00:18:03
Speaker
And these are memories that you're making for a lifetime.
00:18:05
Speaker
You look back at it, you're not going to look at it back like, ooh, it was so important to buy this car or to get these clothes or to get this house or to get this condo.
00:18:15
Speaker
The important thing was like, man, bro, me and my partners, we really created a beautiful thing that the world has that's intangible, that can speak to people, that inspires people.
00:18:28
Speaker
When people come up to me and now they literally will say like,
00:18:32
Speaker
you know, that question or those words that you just told me, you know what I'm saying?
00:18:35
Speaker
Like, they'll be like, you know, they always make journey jokes or like, you know, tell me about that process or tell me about things.
00:18:42
Speaker
And I started to get that more often now.
00:18:46
Speaker
People embodying that system, that lifestyle, the ideology that came to my head when I was young and putting it out there.
00:18:55
Speaker
I didn't create nothing, but I'm just saying like,
00:18:58
Speaker
just putting it out there enough to where it's affecting other people.
00:19:02
Speaker
That's a beautiful thing.
00:19:02
Speaker
That's an intangible object.
00:19:04
Speaker
That's the process.
00:19:05
Speaker
That's the journey.
00:19:06
Speaker
That's the thing that I feel like is more important than
00:19:11
Speaker
the destination because to be honest with you, the real destination that I have, of course I have goals, but my only destination is heaven.
00:19:20
Speaker
I always tell people that now, my destination is heaven, so I'm just really a vessel on this earth to do God's work.
00:19:27
Speaker
And then, you know, that's really, that's like my thing, you know, so pretty much.
00:19:35
Speaker
I got goals while I'm here on this earth.
00:19:37
Speaker
I'm trying to leave a legacy.
00:19:38
Speaker
I'm trying to do some things.
00:19:39
Speaker
I want to have a lot of fun.
00:19:40
Speaker
I want to live it over my friends and my peers and just kind of keep this business and this grind going.
00:19:46
Speaker
And of course, I'm a business-heavy guy, but the only destination truly for me is heaven.
00:19:52
Speaker
Am I doing God's work?
00:19:53
Speaker
Am I doing the due diligence?
00:19:55
Speaker
So that's my big thing.
00:19:58
Speaker
And I know you have some merchandise with the journey greater than destination on it.
00:20:05
Speaker
So I'm gonna have to, you know, find out about how I can get one.
00:20:08
Speaker
How can people purchase your merch?
00:20:12
Speaker
We have a website, www.talented1, like the number one, NES.com.
00:20:18
Speaker
If you go there, all of our merchandise is there.
00:20:21
Speaker
It's hot as I don't know what in Houston, Texas right now.
00:20:24
Speaker
We have our hoodies on a discount right now for $28 just because it's hot.
00:20:29
Speaker
It's the summer, so it's like, yo, we're trying to get these away, but when that winter comes up, we have something special.
00:20:35
Speaker
Of course, the prices and things might go up for the OG hoodies again, but like
00:20:40
Speaker
We have something special for the ladies this winter.
00:20:44
Speaker
I'm not going to say exactly what it is, but we have a whole capsule of Disney's and they just women because we have a lot of women that support us at events.
00:20:54
Speaker
They buy our merchandise, but we just want to do something clothing wise specifically for the ladies that just to make people feel special and stuff like that.
00:21:06
Speaker
And it's comfortable season two.
00:21:08
Speaker
So that can give you a hint like what it could be.
00:21:11
Speaker
You know what I'm saying?
00:21:12
Speaker
You know, it's cozy vibes.
00:21:14
Speaker
We want everybody to feel warm and snuggled.
00:21:16
Speaker
So we got something special going on there.
00:21:19
Speaker
Guys, we're not leaving you out as well.
00:21:20
Speaker
We got some stuff for y'all too.
00:21:22
Speaker
But this combo right now, this part ain't for y'all.
00:21:28
Speaker
This is for y'all guys.
00:21:29
Speaker
We take care of y'all all the time.
00:21:33
Speaker
And I want my t-shirt.
00:21:34
Speaker
I want my t-shirt.
00:21:35
Speaker
Because I know it's hot right now in Texas, but it's going to start getting colder.
00:21:39
Speaker
So I would definitely love a hoodie.
00:21:41
Speaker
If you want to send me one, we can set that up.
00:21:45
Speaker
Who are some of your dream guests for Talented Ones?
Dream Guests and Interview Aspirations
00:21:50
Speaker
And also, oh, go ahead.
00:21:55
Speaker
I was going to ask, on top of that, do you have like a dream role in the future?
00:22:01
Speaker
You know, because being a media personality, we wear many hats as like a host, producer, creator.
00:22:10
Speaker
Are there any dream roles that you have down the line that you aspire to do one day, maybe outside of media or in the media?
00:22:21
Speaker
To answer the first question, the first guest that comes off of my mind is like a dream guest of mine is Jamie Foxx.
00:22:28
Speaker
You know what I'm saying?
00:22:30
Speaker
I was thinking of him earlier, his sit down with Denzel and how he did like, I forgot, Actors on Actors.
00:22:40
Speaker
He did like the lip.
00:22:46
Speaker
Yeah, Jamie Foxx, I really like
00:22:50
Speaker
I'm trying to manifest that.
00:22:51
Speaker
I know I have some people that are around him in LA.
00:22:55
Speaker
And he's from Texas.
00:22:58
Speaker
He's from good old Terrell, Texas.
00:23:02
Speaker
Texas Boy Connection interview.
00:23:05
Speaker
My whole personality will be on Front Street that day.
00:23:11
Speaker
Yeah, I would be ecstatic.
00:23:13
Speaker
But Jamie Foxx for sure would be my... Jamie Foxx
00:23:19
Speaker
Denzel, I think Michael B. Jordan, but Michael B. Jordan in a different aspect because Michael B. Jordan is like, he's a little more serious.
00:23:28
Speaker
He's not a non-comedian.
00:23:30
Speaker
I've noticed in his interviews, he is very reserved and just kind of like, like he ponders a lot.
00:23:38
Speaker
And I'm just like, I feel like his personality is a bit more loose or more wilder than how he comes across.
00:23:47
Speaker
I think there's a thing of comfortability.
00:23:49
Speaker
Like we're in a game of strangers.
00:23:51
Speaker
So you don't really know who you're going to get when you're doing an interview.
00:23:55
Speaker
You don't know if you get a troll trying to come provoke you and say some wild stuff, or you don't know that like, he knows the fact that if I say something crazy, it's going to be a headline.
00:24:04
Speaker
So like, you know, it's a little more reserved, but I would do that interview and I would approach it in a way of not like I, Abra, I know you, but more of like a,
00:24:15
Speaker
If you're going to be in this deep pocket vibe, like you want to be Mr. Mysterious, okay, we're going to have a deep introspective conversation.
00:24:22
Speaker
But if you are on a lighthearted mood, like you're having a good day, you're jolly, you're going to do the jolly way.
00:24:27
Speaker
We're going to figure that.
00:24:30
Speaker
I would specifically want that interview for the boxing match of the interview.
00:24:35
Speaker
Like the vibe that we perfect.
00:24:37
Speaker
Let's see what's really going on here.
00:24:39
Speaker
But I do have some women as well.
00:24:42
Speaker
Mary J. Blige, that just came to my head.
00:24:52
Speaker
That would be such a high vibrational conversation.
00:24:56
Speaker
She's such a high vibrational energetic being.
00:25:03
Speaker
She has a dope spirit about herself.
00:25:08
Speaker
Two new people I have on my list now.
00:25:15
Speaker
She has a very vibrant personality.
00:25:19
Speaker
Brent's the opposite, but he acts like he doesn't want to talk, but he's got a lot of personality in there.
00:25:25
Speaker
You can tell in his older music, but he kind of chilled out because his character and who he's perceiving himself as is more chill now.
00:25:33
Speaker
But I would try to get the other type of energy, the more energetic side out of it on the interview side.
00:25:40
Speaker
And then the last one,
00:25:41
Speaker
is an artist out of LA.
00:25:43
Speaker
It's probably, I don't want to say, he's definitely not the smallest person here and who I've said, but he got Raymond nominated last year and I almost met him last year.
00:25:52
Speaker
The artist named Blast out of LA.
00:25:55
Speaker
I haven't heard of him.
00:26:01
Speaker
He's like the new West Coast Nate dog.
00:26:04
Speaker
Like, you know the song 21 Questions by 50 Cent?
00:26:11
Speaker
Okay, so that chorus was sang by Nate Dogg.
00:26:13
Speaker
But Blast is like the parsley on songs nowadays for a lot of artists.
00:26:20
Speaker
Not even just hip-hop, just in general.
00:26:22
Speaker
And I'm like, yo, I really got onto the music of 2020.
00:26:25
Speaker
And I'm like, I'm trying to make this interview happen.
00:26:27
Speaker
So Blast, if you ever hear this, man, I know some people out in L.A.
00:26:31
Speaker
I'm out there a lot.
00:26:33
Speaker
All my people I just said, let's work.
00:26:36
Speaker
He's shooting a shot.
00:26:38
Speaker
That's how you do it.
00:26:39
Speaker
I heard you like kind of singing Victoria, not singing, humming Victoria Monet earlier.
00:26:45
Speaker
So, I mean, what about her?
00:26:47
Speaker
I'm really getting into her.
00:26:49
Speaker
I'm listening to her new album, Jaguar, but her song with Leon, is it Leon Thomas?
00:26:57
Speaker
I have several songs of hers on my playlist.
00:27:00
Speaker
I think she would also be super chill to talk to.
00:27:02
Speaker
Not just because we have the same name, but.
00:27:06
Speaker
I see what you're doing.
00:27:11
Speaker
With her, I would have to do a little more research.
00:27:14
Speaker
Like, I know her music, but, like, the other people I've, like, I named, I've studied already.
00:27:21
Speaker
I've already, like, wrote down notes, like, of these people.
00:27:26
Speaker
So with her, I would have to study a little more because you never want to go into anything ill-prepared.
00:27:32
Speaker
She's having a moment right now, which is kind of funny to me because she was more on the writer's side beforehand, and now she's getting her moment
00:27:39
Speaker
in the stardom lane.
00:27:40
Speaker
And I think that's just due to diligence and consistency in the game.
00:27:44
Speaker
Like we talked about earlier, consistency is a big key.
00:27:48
Speaker
And the one thing I've noticed about when you're interviewing entertainers, from whatever is acting, whether it's artists, whether it's musicians, that creative thing doesn't just hit because you have talent.
00:28:03
Speaker
It hits because of timing.
00:28:04
Speaker
And I think it's her time right now.
00:28:06
Speaker
I think the world is starting to appreciate what she has going on.
00:28:09
Speaker
And she's gotten the right people and the right vibes and the right-esque around her now to push her to the next level.
00:28:17
Speaker
So I would love to sit down and interview her as well.
00:28:20
Speaker
I just want to interview everybody, man.
00:28:25
Speaker
Will my whole heart assist?
00:28:28
Speaker
Hardnesses are the hardest.
00:28:30
Speaker
I know what you mean.
00:28:32
Speaker
I know what you mean.
00:28:34
Speaker
So we're going to go back to that dream role question.
00:28:36
Speaker
What, what's one of your dream roles?
Aspirations in Scriptwriting and Directing
00:28:41
Speaker
And I'm assuming it's like occupations, but under whatever, you know, in our lane of what we do.
00:28:52
Speaker
not a position, but I guess maybe something you wanted to do as a kid that was like a dream.
00:28:58
Speaker
Is that still a dream role for you or has it shifted over time?
00:29:02
Speaker
It's crazy because like, this is going to sound so cliche, but like what I'm doing now is kind of what I wanted to do as a kid.
00:29:11
Speaker
And so I always knew I kind of wanted to be in this role, but outside of this, there's definitely a few things I would want to do.
00:29:20
Speaker
I'm working on right now is like, I'm perfecting my script writing.
00:29:24
Speaker
Um, I'm perfect writing, directing, uh, script writing, uh, TV, curating shows and movies.
00:29:34
Speaker
That's something that's, um, big that I really want to get into.
00:29:38
Speaker
And it's not all just being in front of the camera, just the process behind the scenes, curating the story, directing, um, writing, producing, um,
00:29:50
Speaker
If I got to get in front of a camera, I got the personality.
00:29:52
Speaker
I'll get out my little... I don't think I have a shell, but I'll throw the whole J-Shift vibes out there.
00:30:00
Speaker
I'll put my little one-two on camera.
00:30:02
Speaker
We all have shells.
00:30:03
Speaker
We all have shells.
00:30:05
Speaker
Even the most extroverted artist, that's kind of like a shell of theirs.
00:30:09
Speaker
You notice the really, really big artists, big-name artists, they're like some of the shyest people.
00:30:16
Speaker
Yeah, well, it's an on-and-off switch.
00:30:19
Speaker
I have a Justin Shepard switch and I have a J Shepard switch.
00:30:23
Speaker
And sometimes, and my biggest thing sometimes is like, Mason will tell you this all day.
00:30:29
Speaker
Mason's our lead production.
00:30:31
Speaker
That's also like myself, like my little brother.
00:30:33
Speaker
He'll come to me sometimes like, yo, I need you to turn off Justin.
00:30:36
Speaker
I need you to turn off J Shepard.
00:30:38
Speaker
Which means like Justin is chill, reserved.
00:30:42
Speaker
I'm not a quiet, quiet, quiet guy, but I can be to myself and
00:30:47
Speaker
just really relax and J Shep is not loud, but J Shep is the outside character.
00:30:54
Speaker
So like if someone were to see me at college, you know, so we went to the same university, it used to throw people off because I was the guy throwing parties on the weekend.
00:31:04
Speaker
And then like people would come around me during the week and they'd be like, oh, you like real like quiet and chill.
00:31:09
Speaker
And I'm like, no, that's like my normal self.
00:31:12
Speaker
That's like, yeah, like I'm off the clock.
00:31:17
Speaker
I'm off the clock.
00:31:18
Speaker
You know, I've already thrown you this function and I've already been in the mix or whatever on the weekend.
00:31:25
Speaker
Like I'm in everybody's face then I'm turned and like, I make sure everybody has a good time.
00:31:29
Speaker
Cause you know, we're, it's a business too at that, that we was doing back in the gap.
00:31:33
Speaker
But just in general, like, yo, I'm on campus.
00:31:36
Speaker
I'm going to class.
00:31:36
Speaker
Like what, how turned do you want me to be?
00:31:38
Speaker
Like, I'm trying to make an A. Like, I'm not, you know, I'm in my personal mode.
00:31:46
Speaker
And I feel like that's the Justin that I remember was the very introverted to himself.
00:31:54
Speaker
Definitely not flashy from what I remember.
00:31:57
Speaker
So when you say parties on the weekend, I don't know about that, Justin.
00:32:01
Speaker
But I think... I was in class.
00:32:09
Speaker
I'm trying to focus here.
00:32:11
Speaker
It's funny, though, because I feel like
00:32:14
Speaker
At our major, a lot of people didn't get to see that because, I don't know, I would, like, take note of who I would see at Stuff We Would Throw.
00:32:23
Speaker
Like, me and my friends had a group called BPG Entertainment at St.
00:32:27
Speaker
We were, like, throwing events, stuff like that.
00:32:29
Speaker
And it wasn't, like, a small group.
00:32:30
Speaker
Like, we was throwing, like, stuff at the fairgrounds that had, like, 600, 700 people from different universities.
00:32:38
Speaker
But then I would take note of who I would see from my classes there.
00:32:42
Speaker
Because then like the next time I'm in class, like I wouldn't want you to talk about it, nor was I ashamed.
00:32:48
Speaker
I was just kind of like, I'm a different.
00:32:52
Speaker
I'm in a different mode right now.
00:32:53
Speaker
Like I'm studying.
00:32:55
Speaker
It's a different vibe.
00:32:56
Speaker
I'm in a different bag right now.
00:32:59
Speaker
I would definitely say like, yeah, for me as a kid, I didn't see myself doing good.
00:33:05
Speaker
In this aspect, I think I had... I've said this before to another guest, but like the three A's.
00:33:12
Speaker
So either an actress is what I want to be, an actress, an athlete, or an author.
00:33:21
Speaker
But I was definitely super shy.
00:33:23
Speaker
So I'm like, doing a podcast by myself would not have been my first choice.
00:33:28
Speaker
I definitely would have been an athlete.
00:33:32
Speaker
So I think I've kind of surprised myself, too.
00:33:39
Speaker
You know what's crazy?
00:33:40
Speaker
I'm going to say this here.
00:33:42
Speaker
That's really funny.
00:33:43
Speaker
I just thought about this.
00:33:44
Speaker
You know a lot of people, this used to throw me off in comedy.
00:33:50
Speaker
You know, a lot of people were shy trying to do this thing that we're doing.
00:33:58
Speaker
And I understand the duality part.
00:34:04
Speaker
It used to throw me off really bad.
00:34:07
Speaker
I won't ever say I was shy in class or I wasn't shy.
00:34:10
Speaker
But like, you ever realize like, how can you be shy and want to be on camera?
00:34:16
Speaker
Do you ever think about that now?
00:34:20
Speaker
Of course, of course.
00:34:21
Speaker
Like we have classmates now that are currently on television, local television as anchors and news reporters.
00:34:29
Speaker
And just seeing like, remembering them how, I guess we were in class and now seeing them on TV being confident and- They didn't talk.
00:34:40
Speaker
Right, right, right.
00:34:46
Speaker
People can surprise you.
00:34:49
Speaker
That shit like messed me up.
00:34:51
Speaker
I'll be like, oh, I'm so sorry.
00:34:57
Speaker
Like, yo, I'm like, you wasn't even a talker.
00:35:01
Speaker
Like, I remember having to like, a professor would say something to everybody to be quiet.
00:35:06
Speaker
I almost seem like a class clown now.
00:35:07
Speaker
Cause I'm just like, I guess I'll talk.
00:35:10
Speaker
And like, now people on the news and I'm like,
00:35:14
Speaker
You ain't even say a word, but I'm happy for you because you're doing good.
00:35:19
Speaker
Like even, even in my classes now, online classes as a grad student, I've noticed like my personality has shifted like big time since undergrad.
00:35:30
Speaker
Like I'm speaking up in class.
00:35:32
Speaker
I was like the first one to raise my hand in class for, for like a business simulation yesterday.
00:35:38
Speaker
I surprised myself.
00:35:39
Speaker
Like I was like, girl, because like,
00:35:44
Speaker
undergrad me would have been more like, I'm gonna let other people speak.
00:35:48
Speaker
And then I'm gonna say something.
00:35:49
Speaker
But like actually saying something first is like, that's, that's a big deal because it's like, not only am I here, like I'm here to participate.
00:35:56
Speaker
I'm not just here to take this class.
00:35:58
Speaker
I'm here to like be all in both feet.
00:36:02
Speaker
So yeah, I can understand that.
00:36:06
Speaker
I actually, I have another question for you.
00:36:08
Speaker
This is your show, but I do have a question for you though.
00:36:14
Speaker
Do you have a thing where... How do I put this?
00:36:20
Speaker
Okay, so I have a thing where when I'm in a small room and there's like 10 to 15 people in there, I would actually get nervous.
00:36:29
Speaker
But if I'm in a big crowd and a big stage, I don't have any nerves
Comfort in Public Speaking
00:36:34
Speaker
And I feel like that's so bad.
00:36:37
Speaker
Like, I'd rather talk to 500 to 1,000 people than...
00:36:43
Speaker
to talk to like 15 and have to stand up and talk to 15 people.
00:36:51
Speaker
So you're saying, am I more comfortable talking to a smaller group of people than like a big group?
00:37:01
Speaker
Yes, because a smaller group of people, the stakes are less high.
00:37:05
Speaker
However, does does through mass communications count like through social media, through a reel or through Instagram?
00:37:12
Speaker
Because I've noticed like creating content on social media, it can get over a thousand views.
00:37:19
Speaker
And technically, that's like me talking to a lot of people.
00:37:22
Speaker
I just haven't seen them in person.
00:37:53
Speaker
Because some people that do TED Talks, you know, they say like, oh man, like I didn't even know I could do that.
00:37:58
Speaker
No, I was capable of that until they did it.
00:38:02
Speaker
I think for me, I would have to psych myself out.
00:38:05
Speaker
And think of one person that I want to talk to in a crowd and just pretend like I'm talking to that person.
00:38:13
Speaker
You know how some people say like pretend people are like not looking at you or pretend there's no one there.
00:38:19
Speaker
People are wearing their underwear or something.
00:38:22
Speaker
You know, it would have to be something like that.
00:38:25
Speaker
But I think I could do it.
00:38:26
Speaker
I just, I don't know right now.
00:38:31
Speaker
So I have a thing where it's interesting.
00:38:34
Speaker
So I say that because I had a class yesterday, and everyone had to stand up and say an introduction to themselves.
00:38:42
Speaker
And for the first time in a long time, I got up there, and it wasn't stuttering, but I was just like, I was like, yo, I feel like I didn't do my intro well.
00:38:56
Speaker
Like, I just felt like I wasn't.
00:39:01
Speaker
I can't picture that.
00:39:02
Speaker
I just can't picture it for some reason.
00:39:05
Speaker
I couldn't either.
00:39:05
Speaker
And it fucked me up.
00:39:08
Speaker
You know, I'm in class.
00:39:10
Speaker
It messed me up for an hour.
00:39:11
Speaker
Like I was sitting there.
00:39:12
Speaker
I put notes on my phone.
00:39:13
Speaker
Like, no, this is something we need to go back to the drawing board on.
00:39:16
Speaker
Because what is this?
00:39:18
Speaker
Nigga, I thought we was past this point.
00:39:22
Speaker
We was supposed to be... We usually did a big stage.
00:39:26
Speaker
We were in front of people.
00:39:29
Speaker
Do you feel like our biggest critics can be ourselves, though?
00:39:34
Speaker
So you may have felt like you didn't do a good job in that moment, but some people probably aren't even thinking about it like that.
00:39:41
Speaker
They may have been like, his shoes are untied.
00:39:44
Speaker
And that could have been the only thing that they remember, not like how you spoke.
00:39:48
Speaker
We were so hard on ourselves.
00:39:49
Speaker
And that's one thing that I...
00:39:51
Speaker
have had to learn through this podcast, through the process of becoming a content creator, was like to not be so hard on myself, the way I speak, the way I present myself in front of the camera, the intros that I do, like, oh my gosh, I have cringed so many times at some of my intros, like forgetting, I think I forgot to say the person's book, the author's book, the name of his book.
00:40:11
Speaker
I don't know why, but just giving myself grace, you know?
00:40:17
Speaker
Because when you give yourself grace, it kind of takes that pressure off.
00:40:22
Speaker
Like, I'm growing from this.
00:40:25
Speaker
Like, I'm still learning.
00:40:29
Speaker
So that's something that I try to do to make things easier.
00:40:36
Speaker
I think, how do I put this?
00:40:38
Speaker
Yeah, I'm definitely my biggest critic.
00:40:40
Speaker
I'm for sure my biggest critic.
00:40:41
Speaker
But I think that's my biggest concern.
00:40:43
Speaker
blessing too i think because i view myself as like if you're going to be one of the ones you need to work like you wanted the ones which means you have to there's room for all it's room for error and there's room for change and improvements but you have to always make sure that you you dot your i's and cross your t's and if you mess up that's okay but get back in the gym and figure it out that's what that does yesterday
00:41:07
Speaker
Because it's funny because like I just did a whole, like we had that DJ battle festival, TO Fest 2.
00:41:14
Speaker
Yeah, how did that go?
00:41:18
Speaker
And you were on stage from the picture that I saw.
00:41:22
Speaker
Yeah, I was on stage.
00:41:24
Speaker
I did the intro and the outro because I still got to run the business of what's going on.
00:41:28
Speaker
So like I can't, I didn't want to MC it because I have to run the business of what's going on.
00:41:35
Speaker
But there's a lot of talking moments and there's a comfortability I had on stage.
00:41:42
Speaker
That was like the easiest thing ever.
00:41:45
Speaker
And I think one thing that people don't understand is like, yo, when you're on a stage like that, it's like a theater stage and the lights is hot, but you can't see anybody.
00:41:52
Speaker
So I'm just listening.
00:41:55
Speaker
I'm just looking out to an abyss of black.
00:41:59
Speaker
Not to mention most of the people that are black.
00:42:00
Speaker
So it's just a abyss of black people in black.
00:42:05
Speaker
So I can see y'all.
00:42:07
Speaker
I'm just listening for reactions.
00:42:09
Speaker
I listen for audience engagement.
00:42:11
Speaker
So this is where being a teacher helped me out.
00:42:14
Speaker
So I do a thing called call and response.
00:42:17
Speaker
So it was like, all right, make some noise for the last detective.
00:42:21
Speaker
Oh, that was kind of quiet.
00:42:22
Speaker
I make some noise.
00:42:25
Speaker
I'm just getting you, it's just engagement.
00:42:31
Speaker
Now I can go talk my intro.
00:42:34
Speaker
I remember one time I had a period match with some girl in the audience.
00:42:40
Speaker
I said, say it one more time, period.
00:42:42
Speaker
And then I was like, okay.
00:42:45
Speaker
And stuff like that.
00:42:47
Speaker
And so, like, but it was comfortable.
00:42:50
Speaker
It was mad, mad easy.
00:42:51
Speaker
But, see, that's what I was saying.
00:42:53
Speaker
I was, like, in front of, like, 200-something people.
00:42:56
Speaker
And I was, like, that was, to me, easy.
00:43:01
Speaker
I don't know what happened yesterday in front of 15.
00:43:05
Speaker
And, like I said, I wasn't, like, stumbling over myself.
00:43:07
Speaker
I feel like I could have did this better.
00:43:10
Speaker
Like you said, we are a harsh crew, so you are correct.
00:43:13
Speaker
For sure, for sure.
00:43:14
Speaker
Affirmations also helped me out too, which are like, there's an app called I Am.
00:43:23
Speaker
I am a great speaker.
00:43:24
Speaker
I am a powerful creator.
00:43:28
Speaker
Things like that, that you can apply to your own situation that can kind of help you think something different than your reality and turn it into your reality.
Speed Round Q&A
00:43:41
Speaker
But I want to do a quick speed round with you.
00:43:43
Speaker
So with these questions, there's just quick answers.
00:43:46
Speaker
One sentence, one word.
00:43:51
Speaker
What's the last song that you listened to?
00:43:56
Speaker
Strike by a little yachty.
00:43:59
Speaker
Wait, say that again.
00:44:00
Speaker
Strike by a little yachty.
00:44:04
Speaker
Don't know what that song is, but okay.
00:44:07
Speaker
Finish the sentence.
00:44:08
Speaker
I truly believe that.
00:44:15
Speaker
My favorite book is.
00:44:23
Speaker
My favorite book is The Richest Man in Babylon.
00:44:28
Speaker
That is on my to read list.
00:44:31
Speaker
I have heard of it like several times, even in other books.
00:44:35
Speaker
The author is saying they read that book.
00:44:36
Speaker
So I want to read that book.
00:44:39
Speaker
In two words, I would tell my younger self to.
00:44:50
Speaker
You just hit little Vicky with that one.
00:44:52
Speaker
And last question for you is right now I feel.
00:45:04
Speaker
Thank you so much, Justin, a.k.a.
00:45:06
