Introduction to Guests and Podcast
00:00:16
Speaker
All right, hello, welcome and welcome back to the Feel Your Feelings podcast.
00:00:20
Speaker
My name is Victoria Macajula and I'm your host.
00:00:23
Speaker
Today I am joined by Mr. Chris Palme.
00:00:28
Speaker
He's based in Canada.
00:00:30
Speaker
We met on LinkedIn, actually.
00:00:32
Speaker
He is a radio host for WQEE.
The Radio Host Journey
00:00:37
Speaker
99.1 FM which you can listen to in Georgia and he talks sports broadcasting but not just sports but he talks to people in all different industries and he's also a host I want to pick his brain today so my first question for you Mr. Chris how are you feeling
00:00:56
Speaker
I had a busy weekend.
00:00:57
Speaker
I was in Buffalo Thursday to cover the Buffalo Bisons.
00:01:01
Speaker
They are the top farm team of the Toronto Blue Jays.
00:01:04
Speaker
So I do media work for them, doing interviews with players and coaches and stuff like that.
00:01:09
Speaker
And then Friday, Saturday, I do camera work as well.
00:01:13
Speaker
I do camera work for the local university here.
00:01:15
Speaker
So I basically, the last three days, I was either doing my media work or doing my camera work and
00:01:22
Speaker
Yesterday, I was able to watch a little NFL.
00:01:25
Speaker
And today I have my show with you.
00:01:27
Speaker
And then I have a show with a psychology student from James Madison University at four o'clock this afternoon.
00:01:34
Speaker
You're a busy man.
00:01:35
Speaker
You're a busy man.
00:01:36
Speaker
Thank you for making time to be on here today.
00:01:38
Speaker
Like we we first met on LinkedIn.
00:01:40
Speaker
I know I've been following you for a while.
00:01:42
Speaker
We've been following each other for a while.
00:01:44
Speaker
And I know that you're in radio.
00:01:46
Speaker
You have your own radio show.
00:01:48
Speaker
And when you reached out to me like, hey, like I want to be on your podcast.
00:01:52
Speaker
I'm like, yeah, sure.
00:01:53
Speaker
Let's do the host to host series.
00:01:54
Speaker
This is the host to host series, by the way.
00:01:57
Speaker
So thank you so much again for your time.
Daily Life of a Radio Host
00:02:00
Speaker
So I'm curious to know what what is a day in your life like?
00:02:05
Speaker
Well, when I wake up in the morning, the first thing I do is they check my phone or check my laptop and then I get busy working on getting guests for my show.
00:02:14
Speaker
And I'm going to tell you this, you know, this is well, Victoria, booking guests and getting guests to come on your show is a full time job itself.
00:02:22
Speaker
And then sometimes guests cancel at the last minute.
00:02:26
Speaker
So I always have to make sure I have a plan B and a plan C, but I love it.
00:02:31
Speaker
I love reaching out to people.
00:02:33
Speaker
Most of the time, 90%, I get told yes.
00:02:36
Speaker
There are going to be times where people aren't interested in talking with me or coming on a podcast or a radio show.
00:02:43
Speaker
So don't ever take rejection or no personally.
00:02:47
Speaker
I always use it as motivation to keep improving and keep learning.
00:02:53
Speaker
Like I've gotten super comfortable with rejection as a podcaster.
00:02:56
Speaker
It's really forced me out of my comfort zone to, to, to,
00:03:01
Speaker
talk to people and also like just ask them openly like, hey, like, would you like to be on my platform?
00:03:07
Speaker
And like, if they say no, like, it's just something that I just kind of have to roll off my back.
00:03:11
Speaker
It's a skill that I've acquired.
00:03:14
Speaker
I'm curious to know why radio and what is your show all about?
The Love for Radio and Storytelling
00:03:19
Speaker
Because I was born in 1972, so I'm 51.
00:03:23
Speaker
But you know what?
00:03:23
Speaker
I might be 51, but I don't feel 51 or look 51.
00:03:27
Speaker
I grew up when there was like less TV stations on in the 70s and 80s.
00:03:32
Speaker
So when I was younger, I used to listen to radio for my baseball games, my hockey games, my football games.
00:03:38
Speaker
And I always loved radio because
00:03:40
Speaker
You got to paint a picture for the audience on TV.
00:03:44
Speaker
I like TV as well, but TV, you can see what's going on.
00:03:48
Speaker
On radio, you're relying on that person to do play by play in that.
00:03:52
Speaker
And I've always just enjoyed the radio industry.
00:03:54
Speaker
And I have a gift of gab.
00:03:56
Speaker
I just love talking to people.
00:03:59
Speaker
And I think my former profession I was in for 24 years has prepared me for this because I had to talk to people from
00:04:05
Speaker
CEOs to people that were dishwashers all kinds of life and I just feel that I'm ready to do this and I just love talking to people and storytelling and learning from my guests awesome awesome awesome and your show you tell me a little bit more about like what your show is all about because I know you said you're not just focused on talking to athletes or people in the sports world but who who are some of the people that you have already talked to
00:04:34
Speaker
Well, sports-wise, I've had, uh, Trout Sworsky, the voice of the Bulls on, Eric Smith, the voice of the Raptors on, Tom McCarthy from the NFL on CBS and the Philadelphia Phillies.
00:04:45
Speaker
The Philly fanatic, Tom Begoyne, he's come on my show, and I've had many others, like, uh,
00:04:52
Speaker
jerry howers from the toronto blue jays any cowboys dallas cowboys no not yet no doubt but one but one thing about me is don't boo me i'm a philadelphia eagles fan but i love the rivalry i'm not a hater so yeah yeah so but
00:05:09
Speaker
I've had guys on from radio shows, but I would like to get somebody on from Dallas to talk about the Cowboys.
00:05:15
Speaker
I did have a woman on from Dallas a couple months ago.
00:05:18
Speaker
You might know her.
00:05:19
Speaker
I'm not sure if you've heard of her.
00:05:20
Speaker
Her name is Abby Alonzo.
00:05:24
Speaker
She's from the Dallas area and she covers college sports and a little bit about the Cowboys.
00:05:29
Speaker
But my show is not just a Canadian podcast or radio show.
00:05:34
Speaker
It's international.
00:05:35
Speaker
I've had guests on from the UK, Switzerland.
00:05:39
Speaker
I've had a female ventriloquist on from Australia.
00:05:42
Speaker
And I've had one on from LA.
00:05:44
Speaker
I've actually had two female ventriloquists on my show so far.
00:05:49
Speaker
You know, when you said Dallas, I was also thinking of Coach Sanders, Deion Sanders.
00:05:54
Speaker
He used to play for the Cowboys and now he's coaching at CU Boulder.
00:05:58
Speaker
He's one of my dream guests, actually, to have on.
Dream Guests and Sports Connections
00:06:02
Speaker
Because my parents, like...
00:06:04
Speaker
We're talking about back in the day, because my family is from Dallas.
00:06:08
Speaker
It was kind of born and raised in like the North Texas, Briscoe area.
00:06:12
Speaker
We moved to Colorado for like seven years and we came back to Texas.
00:06:16
Speaker
But they would talk about all the time how they would like drive by his mansion and prosper when he used to live out there.
00:06:23
Speaker
And his house is still there.
00:06:25
Speaker
So like you can actually like go and like drive in there.
00:06:27
Speaker
And like we had drove in there and I was like, wow, the house is...
00:06:32
Speaker
smaller than I thought, like no offense,
00:06:41
Speaker
Yeah, interesting.
00:06:42
Speaker
But compared to where he's at now, I'm pretty sure it's like water under the bridge.
00:06:46
Speaker
But yeah, long story short, he's a dream guest to have that I would love to talk to.
00:06:54
Speaker
For me, my dream guest would be Steve Eisenman, who played for the Detroit Red Wings, won three Stanley Cups with him.
00:07:03
Speaker
And I always liked him, even when he was just starting out in hockey.
00:07:08
Speaker
By the way, here's a quick story about me.
00:07:10
Speaker
I was at Tom Brady's first ever NFL game in July 31st, 2000 at Canton, Ohio.
00:07:16
Speaker
He was a four-string quarterback behind Drew Bledsoe, John Freeze, Michael Bishop.
00:07:23
Speaker
And what I remember about that game was it was on Monday Night Football, and I ended up getting food poisoning.
00:07:29
Speaker
And my friend's like, she had to go to the hospital.
00:07:32
Speaker
So he dragged me to the game, and I was sick as a dog.
00:07:36
Speaker
Sick of the dog, but I'm glad I went because that was Tom Brady's first game, and I still have the ticket stub to this day.
00:07:43
Speaker
So I said to my friend, at the time, I was mad at you for making me go when I had food poisoning, but now in hindsight, I was like, thank you for doing that.
00:07:51
Speaker
Now, someday I might be able to sell that ticket stub.
00:07:55
Speaker
Yeah, that's awesome.
00:07:56
Speaker
It's an unforgettable memory.
00:07:57
Speaker
It's an unforgettable memory.
00:07:58
Speaker
To kind of go more down this rabbit hole on dream guests and like the sports world, I would say Damar Hamlin, LeBron James' son, Bronny, Bronny Jr. And Serena Williams.
00:08:11
Speaker
Because when I was a kid, when I was like eight, if you had asked me what my dream job was, I would have told you I wanted to be a professional tennis player.
00:08:21
Speaker
I picked up my first racket when I was seven.
00:08:24
Speaker
And then again, when I was like 15 in high school, trying out for the tennis team.
00:08:28
Speaker
I don't know how they let me on, but I ended up playing like for junior varsity in high school.
00:08:35
Speaker
And also Coco Gauff.
00:08:37
Speaker
So those are some of my dream guests, even though I'm not in the sports world any longer.
00:08:41
Speaker
It's still something that is like close to me and, um,
00:08:45
Speaker
Actually, like we discussed earlier, is like me wanting to work for some sports companies, shooting my shot with the NFL and the Olympics next year.
00:08:54
Speaker
So we shall see what comes out of that.
Volunteering and Career Shifts
00:08:59
Speaker
So one thing I would give people advice to Victoria is when I was younger, I did like broadcasting and sports, but they didn't have this technology back in the nineties.
00:09:08
Speaker
So it's hard to know when you're younger, what you want, what did you want it to do?
00:09:13
Speaker
But in a way, what I did for my 20, 25 years of my other career,
00:09:17
Speaker
I think prepared me for this.
00:09:18
Speaker
And this is something I have a passion for.
00:09:20
Speaker
And you know how I ended up doing this is through volunteering with the semi pro basketball team.
00:09:27
Speaker
They needed a camera operator.
00:09:29
Speaker
They liked my work.
00:09:30
Speaker
They said, have you done camera before?
00:09:31
Speaker
No, we're going to pay you.
00:09:33
Speaker
And then it led me to a TV company, which led to my podcast, which led to my radio show.
00:09:38
Speaker
So being in the right place.
00:09:40
Speaker
at the right time just ignited my passion i'm not telling people here on your show wait to 47 or 48 to figure out what you want to do but it's never too late and uh i just being in the right place it ignited my passion that had in me hi there how are you feeling
00:09:57
Speaker
It's me, Victoria, host of the podcast, and when I first started podcasting, I was super scared and nervous about the way I sounded, the way I looked, the way people would receive me, but using Zencaster has been a really helpful way for me to become more confident and express myself as a creator.

00:10:43
Speaker
It's time to share your story.
Generational Perspectives for Gen Z
00:10:46
Speaker
No, that's that's fantastic to hear because we need that perspective as a Gen Z. Like this whole podcast is based on like being from a Gen Z perspective.
00:10:54
Speaker
I think how I initially started it was like Gen Z to Gen Z. And like there's several platforms out there where we're talking to each other on our own level, but like actually hearing from the other generations about like because you guys have walked that path already.
00:11:08
Speaker
So it makes it better, I think, to hear your perspectives and understand like, how can we kind of do the same thing?
00:11:15
Speaker
Like, how did you get to do what you did?
00:11:19
Speaker
Okay, so what has bought you joy in the last
Finding Joy in Media Work
00:11:26
Speaker
Just doing my media work, going down to the ballpark and being a part of the Buffalo Bisons team.
00:11:32
Speaker
They are the top farm team of the Toronto Blue Jays.
00:11:34
Speaker
And people shake my hand, hey, Chris, how you doing?
00:11:37
Speaker
And then get to go down on the field and the players are like, hey, Chris, how you doing?
00:11:40
Speaker
Can I talk to you today?
00:11:41
Speaker
And I just take pride on doing a good job with my live interviews and writing a game night story for the team and just being around the organization and stuff like that.
00:11:54
Speaker
And what I love about this industry too, by the way, I talk a lot, by the way, is there's something new to learn all the time.
00:12:00
Speaker
And I love the learning aspect of it.
00:12:03
Speaker
And also I want to keep improving and I don't want to get complacent as well.
00:12:09
Speaker
Ooh, that's a deep one right there.
00:12:10
Speaker
And speaking of that, I guess, like on the note of complacency, like what advice would you give to someone who looks up to you, someone who wants to do what you're doing, sports broadcasting, someone who wants to have their own radio show and maybe be a podcast host as well?
Advice for Aspiring Broadcasters
00:12:28
Speaker
You got to start somewhere.
00:12:29
Speaker
You got to start small.
00:12:30
Speaker
I had some help when I first started.
00:12:32
Speaker
Hey, I'm going to be honest.
00:12:33
Speaker
When I first started, my show was just on Instagram live.
00:12:36
Speaker
It was called Chris's Corner and it was 25 minutes and it wasn't very good.
00:12:41
Speaker
But I had a friend, Pat Gregor, who's with TSN.
00:12:45
Speaker
He's another guy you'd like to have on your show one day.
00:12:49
Speaker
He's into lacrosse.
00:12:51
Speaker
He's into, he works for Coolback Canada too, but he's
00:12:54
Speaker
He believed in my work and he said, Chris, just keep doing what you're doing.
00:12:58
Speaker
And for four months, I couldn't get any guests on.
00:13:01
Speaker
And then finally I got that first guest on.
00:13:04
Speaker
So what I would tell the word it quickly is you have to find your passion and also to you have to grind it out.
00:13:13
Speaker
You're not always going to have success when you start a new career.
00:13:16
Speaker
You have to put in the time, put in the effort, the passion and just keep grinding away.
00:13:22
Speaker
And eventually when you get one guest on,
00:13:24
Speaker
It's now led to me having 315 guests on the last three and a half years.
00:13:29
Speaker
And for people I never thought would come on my show.
00:13:32
Speaker
And you just have to put yourself out there and believe in yourself.
00:13:36
Speaker
Self-confidence and mindset is huge, Victoria.
00:13:40
Speaker
Yeah, my mom says that a lot to me, to put myself out there and not be scared to do that.
Diversity and Inclusivity in Broadcasting
00:13:47
Speaker
And going back to like your guests, because you look over your shoulder and you said we interviewed over 300 people.
00:13:52
Speaker
Have you had any favorite guests so far?
00:13:55
Speaker
There's been so many great ones.
00:13:56
Speaker
Dan Shaman from the Blue Jays and ESPN has been great.
00:14:00
Speaker
John Murphy, the voice of the Buffalo Bills.
00:14:02
Speaker
Bob Sochi, the voice of the Patriots.
00:14:04
Speaker
Freddie Coleman from ESPN Radio.
00:14:06
Speaker
Christine Lisi from ESPN Radio.
00:14:09
Speaker
The Philly Fanatic, the guy who plays the legendary Philly Fanatic, has been on my show.
00:14:14
Speaker
And just a lot of great guests.
00:14:17
Speaker
And I guess just gentleman Jerry Howarth.
00:14:20
Speaker
I grew up listening to him here in Toronto, and he did the Blue Jay games for 36 years.
00:14:25
Speaker
I never thought he'd give me the time of day, and he came on my show and talked to me for an hour and...
00:14:32
Speaker
Yeah, those are the ones those those people are the ones that I admire the most, like the ones that you think like, did they really just like respond?
00:14:42
Speaker
Did they really just like acknowledge me right now?
00:14:44
Speaker
Like, I feel like that that's when you know, like, okay, this is serious.
00:14:48
Speaker
They take me serious.
00:14:49
Speaker
I'm going to take myself serious.
00:14:51
Speaker
One thing to Victoria, what I pride myself on.
00:14:54
Speaker
is my show is very diverse.
00:14:56
Speaker
Not just with my guests.
00:14:57
Speaker
I have a very diverse amount of guests, but I make sure my guests, I try to have male, females.
00:15:03
Speaker
I've even had a transgender person on too.
00:15:06
Speaker
I just want people to come on my show and knowing that they feel comfortable with me and have a good rapport.
00:15:13
Speaker
And I try to pride myself on doing a really good show and just talking to people the way I would talk to you if we were meeting in real life right now instead of virtually.
00:15:23
Speaker
Yeah, this doesn't even feel like a virtual conversation.
00:15:25
Speaker
It's like we're right here in the same room.
00:15:29
Speaker
Yeah, that's awesome.
Speed Round: Personal Insights
00:15:30
Speaker
I was inspired by a few other podcasters that I listened to, and they had little speed rounds.
00:15:35
Speaker
I was like, I want to do that too.
00:15:37
Speaker
So it's basically where I ask a little short question, and you answer in one word, two word sentences.
00:15:46
Speaker
You know, brief, short and sweet.
00:15:51
Speaker
This is my first time, so this is going to be a good experience.
00:15:55
Speaker
See if I can do it in one or two words.
00:15:56
Speaker
Okay, okay, okay, let's go.
00:15:58
Speaker
What is the last song that you listened to?
00:16:08
Speaker
I would say... I usually go to my Spotify.
00:16:20
Speaker
It's a nine minute song.
00:16:27
Speaker
Finish this sentence.
00:16:28
Speaker
I truly believe that.
00:16:35
Speaker
Hard work will eventually make you successful.
00:16:41
Speaker
My favorite book is.
00:16:47
Speaker
Anything that's sports related.
00:16:50
Speaker
I need an example of that.
00:16:57
Speaker
Authors in sports?
00:17:01
Speaker
I guess Hello My Friends by Jerry Helms.
00:17:05
Speaker
Who retired with the Blue Jays.
00:17:07
Speaker
He wrote a book on his 36 year career.
00:17:09
Speaker
So I would say that book was one of my favorites.
00:17:11
Speaker
I'm reading a book right now by Shannon Lee, Bruce Lee's daughter.
00:17:16
Speaker
And martial arts is a sport.
00:17:20
Speaker
I've renewed it like three times already because I don't want to be done reading it.
00:17:24
Speaker
Two words I would tell my younger self to.
00:17:39
Speaker
I would say find my passion.
00:17:41
Speaker
What you enjoy doing in life.
00:17:43
Speaker
That's a good one.
00:17:47
Speaker
And the last question of the speed round is right now I feel.
00:17:50
Speaker
Right now I feel, I feel, I would say right now I feel, I feel, I feel great.
00:18:06
Speaker
I feel motivated now too.
00:18:07
Speaker
Just talking to you.
00:18:08
Speaker
Honestly, I love that.
Conclusion and Connections
00:18:10
Speaker
That last question is always my favorite.
00:18:11
Speaker
Cause I get to gauge like where people's lives are that well, but, uh, thank you so much.
00:18:17
Speaker
Um, Mr. Chris for joining me on the feel your feelings podcast today.
00:18:20
Speaker
It's been a pleasure talking to you.
00:18:22
Speaker
I hope this is not our last conversation at all.
00:18:24
Speaker
So I'm going to keep in touch with you.
00:18:26
Speaker
I would like to have you come on my show at some point.
00:18:31
Speaker
I've already subscribed to your YouTube channel.
00:18:35
Speaker
And I also have a website too.
00:18:37
Speaker
Is it okay if I share it here?
00:18:38
Speaker
I took the question out of my mouth, which is, where can my listeners find you and how can they support you?
00:18:45
Speaker
Okay, I'm on beacons.ai slash Chris D. Palme.
00:18:49
Speaker
And my YouTube channel is typing Chris Palme or live with CDP Sports Talk.
00:18:54
Speaker
And I'm on Apple, Google, Spotify, all the audio platforms.
00:18:59
Speaker
And I'm on LinkedIn, Twitter, everywhere.
00:19:02
Speaker
So just type in Chris Palme if you Google my name and everything will turn up.
