Crystal Palace's Community Shield Victory and Europa League Controversy

00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
are.
00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
in the world right there's a lot to get through on this first episode monday the 11th of august 2025 well the big news is the news that comes a day just after palace beat liverpool on penalties to win the community shield at wembley Unadulterated good news. What a great game.
00:01:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
What a great first half. And if that's anything to go by, we're in for a fantastic season. And so will Crystal Palace. Until... the news today that Crystal Palace have lost their appeal against being demoted from the Europa League, which they qualified because they won the FA Cup against Man City at the end of last season.
00:01:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, they're not playing the Europa League. They're going to be playing in the Conference League this season. And that's really all about this ruling by UEFA and now upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport and which means that nor Nottingham Forest's spot in the Europa League is confirmed, having been promoted there because Palace have been demoted to the Conference League.

UEFA's Ownership Rules and Legal Implications

00:02:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
A little twist in that, of course, is that it was Forest who pointed out to UEFA that Crystal Palace's ownership situation put them in a difficult position in relation to Olympic Lyonnais, who are also in the Europa League.
00:02:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, we'll talk about the backstory in a bit more detail, but that's going add a little bit of spice to two games this season, Forest Palace and Palace Forest.
00:02:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Forest will be definitely games to watch. There's definitely going to be an edge there. Now, course, the backstory is that Palace qualified for Europa League after winning the FA Cup last season. Everybody was delighted with that.
00:03:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
But then they were punished by UEFA for breaching multi-club ownership rules. ah One of their significant shareholders, an American businessman called John Texter, who owned 43% of Palace until he sold it in June,
00:03:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
is also the majority owner of Olympic Lyonnais, who had also qualified for the Europa League. And that puts UEFA in a bit of a quandary.
00:03:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
So... And the reason for that is they don't want the same owner managing two different clubs in the same competition. So UEFA demanded that Palace show UEFA proof of a change in the restructure or in the structure of their multi-club ownership the by the first of March.
00:03:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the club missed that deadline. And because they missed that deadline, UEFA announced the penalty. Palace weren't

Court of Arbitration for Sport's Decision on Compliance

00:04:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
happy. They submitted an appeal to the Court of Arbustration for Sport in July.
00:04:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they have been adjudicating the case. And today their judgment was UEFA were right. The punishment will stand. And Crystal Palace will play in the Europa League instead.
00:04:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
In the ruling, the Court of Arbitration for Sport said the following. Regulations are clear. They do not provide flexibility to clubs who are non-compliant on the assessment date. The assessment date is absolutely the critical point here.
00:04:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
As Palace had claimed, Texta still had, according to the court of arbitration, a decisive influence over both clubs, Palace and Olympique Lyonnais, at the time of the assessment date.
00:04:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
The panel also dismissed Palace's argument that they'd been that they'd received unfair treatment in comparison to both farm Forest and Lyon.
00:05:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, UEFA rules state that clubs owned to a certain threshold of influence by the same person or entity can't compete in the same European tournament.
00:05:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palace argued that Texta doesn't hold any decisive influence of the club, but UEFA didn't accept the Premier League side defence. So now...

Crystal Palace's Acceptance of Conference League Placement

00:05:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palace, who have said they will play in the Conference League, will face either the Norwegian side Frederikstad or Midtjylland of Denmark in the Conference League play-off round later this month.
00:05:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, that sounds harsh. Everybody is on Palace's side. we all love Crystal Palace and we believe, and under Oliver Glasner, they've done amazing, amazing work in terms of rising, if you like, to the higher echelons, really, of the Premier League. And so everybody is kind of in favour of Palace.
00:06:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
But in the interest of balance, these rules are there for a reason. And they're there to safeguard the integrity of the competition. What would happen if Palace drew Olympic DNA in this composition?
00:06:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, the chances are nothing would happen. There would be no influence, no undue influence, and the two teams would play and the better team would win and they would go forward. But UEFA's perspective on this is they don't know the character of individual owners.
00:06:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And whilst... um the The owner in charge here, Texter may well be, I'm sure is, whiter than white, squeaky clean, absolutely as honest as the day is long.
00:06:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Guess what? Not all owners are like that. Some owners the opposite of that. And UEFA's issue is they have to eliminate any risk of collusion, any risk of undue influence on either side when both of those sides are owned by the same person.
00:07:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
They can't even be the suggestion of any risks. So they have some very strict rules to avoid that happening. And there are things that owners can do to mitigate that.
00:07:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
This is at the heart of the issue that Pallas have with Forrest and why Forrest were quoted in this, in Pallas's case, that they've been unfairly treated because...
00:07:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Forest's owner, Evangelos Marinakis, also owns Olympiacos. they were There was a danger that both Forest and Olympiacos were going to play in the Champions League at one point last year.
00:07:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
didn't materialise. But Evangelos Marinakis created a blind trust, put his shares in the blind trust. That seems to ah alleviate any issues that UEFA have.
00:08:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
John Texter didn't do that. He didn't put those shares in blind trust in time. And that's what I mean by in time. I mean the 1st of March.
00:08:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
So UEFA is in a bit of a pickle because it has very strict rules. It has a very strict date. And if you comply to the rules by that date, you're going to be fine.
00:08:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palace didn't do that. And that's why the finding was against Palace today. It's very tough because everybody loves Palace. Their success of last season has been outstanding.
00:08:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
And of course, John Texter, just to put this in context, has sold his shares now. He's not got any ownership of Palace. He can't have any influence on Palace. So the risk is an entirely hypothetical one.
00:08:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
But rules is rules. And if there's a date and there's a certain set of things you've got to comply by, you've got to do it. And UEFA deemed that John Texter was still in ownership at the point of the assessment date, March 1st.
00:09:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm afraid that's it. Nothing else matters. And the Court of Arbitration for Sport agreed with them. Now, Palace are considering a claim against UEFA for compensation because it's estimated that having to play in the Conference League rather than play in the Europa League will cost Palace £20 million. Now, £20 million pounds is a lot of money to any club.
00:09:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's particularly a lot of money to a club like Palace. And we wish them well. But it seems pretty clear at this point, Palace seem to have accepted it in the sense that they say they are going to play in the Conference League.
00:09:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that story looks to have reached a pretty important point. So that's the big news. That's the hot story coming out of the Premier League today.

Zencastr Endorsement

00:10:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's a few of the things that we want to talk about in the second part of this episode.
00:10:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
But before we get there... I want to share something with you because as we know in football, as Oliver Glasner knows at Palace, it pays to get your team selection right.

Thank
00:11:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, in the second part of this episode, I thought I'd do something interesting. The last season is still fresh in our minds. The new season is absolutely right on our doorstep. So I thought I'd take a look at two teams who I think are destined for contrasting seasons this season. I've asked myself a simple question, a very simple question.
00:11:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who will be this year's most improved team? and who will be this who will be the team that's most likely to regress. That's probably the best way of saying that. Now, in order to be the most improved team, you've got to have had a pretty terrible season last season. And there's a couple of teams who we can be pretty clear fall into that category.
00:12:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Liverpool aren't going to be able to be the most improved team. Everton might be, but Liverpool definitely can't be. But if we're really looking at that basis, teams that did really poorly last year and have got the potential to do much better this season, there's really only two teams that kind of fit into that category.
00:12:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that would be Man Utd and Spurs. And just a quick recap on... Both of those teams are where they finished last year. Man United finished 15th, played 38, obviously won only 11 games, drew nine, lost 18 of their 38 games for 42 points.
00:12:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Spurs finished seventeenth They won 11 as well, but lost 22 of their 38 games. Absolutely appalling performance by so by Spurs. One place above relegation.
00:12:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
They were never really in any serious danger going down. Everybody knew was going down very early last season. But Spurs made a fight of it. They really tried to go down, ah but finished in 17th place. Obviously, it's cost Ange Postacoglu his job.
00:13:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But I just don't see Spurs as emerging from that situation very quickly. I think Spurs are going to struggle again next season.
00:13:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
i I think they'll be bottom half. I just don't see enough fight. I don't see enough creativity and I don't see enough robustness in the Spurs' teeth. Now, change of manager is going to make all the difference there. Postocoglu didn't acclimatise well to the Premier League. He was a bit stubborn, I think, with his ah decisions, with some of his formations.
00:13:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just didn't work. Well, Man United have changed. And I want to focus on Manchester United because I think i've been I've been pretty impressed with the business particularly that Man United have done. i Particularly when I was reading about the changes that Man United have had to make in terms of ah laying off staff of of of cutting of cutting all kinds of expenditure at Old Trafford.
00:14:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought Man United were really going to struggle to attract talent into the ranks during the course of the close season. But in fact, as we've all seen, they've done good business.
00:14:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've Matius Kuna has obviously joined for 62 million. Brian Mbwemo has joined for 65 million. And most recently, Benjamin Sesko has joined from RB Leipzig, Slovenian international, 74 million pounds, 22 years of age, six foot five A very different kind of focal point to the attack that Man United have enjoyed so far.
00:14:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I believe in Amorim as well. I think he's a great coach. I think there's a chance with Amorim for United to regain the kind of credibility they had as a club for for so long. now They've brought some very... that They are far more talented at the start of this season than they were at the end of last season. Now, this doesn't mean that they are the finished article.
00:15:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
They are far from the finished article. There's still a lot of worries about a pedestrian midfield. I liked Fernandes. Bruno Fernandes is a legend. But it's really in defensive midfield and defence that I think they struggle.
00:15:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah I'm... far from convinced about Casemiro. I don't know a single Man United fan who's anything less, but completely unconvinced about Casemiro.
00:15:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And their set-piece defending isn't great. That's going to get tested as well, first game of the season. So having said that, that Man United are not the finished article, they're a lot more finished than they were at the end of last season.
00:16:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
So they finished last season fifteenth I'm predicting top eight. In fact, I think they'll finish seventh this season. ah That's not where they'll want to be. That's not where they want to end up. And it ultimately won't be where they end up.
00:16:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think this whole process, this whole strategic review that is taking place yeah at Manchester United as well, with a new ownership, obviously, and also with Amorim, is not going to take one close season. It's going to take three.
00:16:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're a far better outfit now than they were at the start of last season. I think they'll be even better again at the start of next season. They've got a very tough start against Arsenal. And what a test that is.
00:16:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
But if, as I predict, they'll come out of that with at least a draw... I think we're going to be looking at a very different Man United this season. Confidence will start to flow through that team.
00:16:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought they may even get into sixth position, but I think on balance, they'll finish seventh. They will be the team of this Premier League that will say they're the team that has improved the most based on into 25-26.

00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, if Manchester United are the team that I think are likely to be the team that improves the most, who's going to be the team that is likely to regress?
00:19:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, again, you can only regress if you've had a pretty good season last year. there' Spurs aren't going to regress from 17th. I mean, that's even be that's beyond even Spurs.
00:19:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
But maybe, maybe ah team that's been performing slightly beyond expectations is going to essentially go back to where they probably should be.
00:19:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, that's one argument. But... There are really only two potentials for me for teams that I think are gonna struggle more than they did last year. And that's Forrest who finished who finished fifth.
00:20:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now Forrest, I think Forrest, well they tailed off significantly last year. Now often you can see that performance from the year before, particularly at the back end of the year before, can bleed into ah the early stages of this season. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Forrest struggled from that.
00:20:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I also think, I just remember that altercation, that those crosswords between the owner and the manager that we saw at the end of last season just said to me, is that the point?
00:20:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is that the point where Relations and performance at Forest starts to ebb away. Now, we did see after that some great performances still, but we did see them struggle afterwards. And I've got a feeling they're going to continue with that. I can't see Forest, I should say, finish any anything higher than 12th this year.
00:21:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But they aren't my team for underperforming in 2025, 2026.
00:21:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think the greatest potential for disappointment is at St. James' Park and Newcastle. Now, the Alexander Isaac story has just been rumbling on all summer. Still unresolved.
00:21:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's been a massive distraction. Players at, and forgive me for saying this, all Geordies, players at teams who are maybe the less prestigious clubs, well, they have a habit of getting their own way when they want out.
00:21:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
alex Alexander Isaac wants out. And I'm pretty confident Isaac will get his move. It might not be tomorrow. It might not even be this month. But he won't be a Newcastle player in 2026. I'm pretty sure about that.
00:21:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's been a massive distraction. And also, on top of that, Eddie Howe's inability to bring many of his targets to St. James' Park. Well, that just means the black clouds are firmly parked over St. James'.
00:22:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it leaves Newcastle with some issues because they haven't got a recognised striker, really. They've got an elderly and suspect defence and they are distinctly lacking in cover.
00:22:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, all this on top of a pretty lacklustre performance pre-season by Newcastle. Now, having said that, they haven't been playing their starters for most of the time.
00:22:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
But if you add into that as well the complexity of a Champions League campaign, put that into the mix, And I think Newcastle's resources are starting to look rather paper thin.
00:22:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
anything above 10th spot this season, I think, is going to be beyond them. I have Newcastle finishing around 12th. Now, I should say, all this could change with a couple of great signings.
00:22:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Newcastle don't seem to be capable of bringing players into the club. They seem to be every player's second choice. Maybe maybe they're the team that their agents...
00:23:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
use as an example or as an opportunity to get the better deal with the with another club. That seems to be the case at the moment. For Newcastle to have any kind of chance, particularly with the complexities of the Champions League next year, they need a couple of decent signings.
00:23:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
They were going to change it and they were going to change it right now.
00:23:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:23:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. There's just enough time to cover off some of the latest breaking stories. There's three big things that just caught my eye just i was going in to do the preparation for this podcast. Everton have agreed a season long loan for Jack Grealish from City. That seems good work on both parties.
00:23:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I couldn't see Grealish breaking into the Man City team in any significant way this season. Everton have got a decent player. He's not the great player everybody thought he was going to be. He's very one-sided for me.
00:24:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah He's always on the left and he's extremely right-footed. He seems to me just about one of the easiest players to defend against because you just push him outside. He's going to struggle.
00:24:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, you know, he wins a lot of free kicks. He's creative. He can create things out of nothing. Evan have got a decent player. So I think it works for both of those players. are for Sorry, player and both teams.
00:24:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palace chairman Steve Parrish, he's going to be under a bit of ah a bit of a cloud at the moment, but he's also suggested that Mark Gahey could be sold this summer to avoid losing him at the end of the season. Gahey has entered the final year of his contract just now.
00:24:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he clears no closer to extending his contract with Palace. Looks very likely that Palace are just putting some signals out there that if anybody wants to go and have a conversation about Margehi, they'll find the door is pushed open fairly easily.
00:25:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
And thirdly, Bournemouth defender Ilya Zamanyi is what about to complete a £57 million move to Paris Saint-Germain.
00:25:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Both clubs are still negotiating exactly what that fee will be for the 22-year-old Ukrainian, but that looks likely to happen. And this comes on the back of Bournemouth selling both ah or two of the defenders, Dean Hoyssen to Real Madrid.
00:25:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Milos Kerkes to Liverpool. So it's not a great time to be rebuilding strategically from the back, but it looks like Bournemouth may well but find themselves in that situation. Maybe something for you to consider if you're thinking of any Bournemouth defenders in your fantasy Premier League teams this year. So...
00:25:53
