Introduction and Geek Blurm Episode Overview

00:01:26
Speaker
Welcome everyone. Hello. To Geek Blurm, episode 138. Getting towards the end of summer. Couple more minutes left.
00:01:38
Speaker
Things will lighten up on your schedule a little bit. We'll get, and get into more, uh, winter watches and so on and so forth. But for this week, we have a few things we're going to talk about.

TV Show Highlights: That '90s Show and Twister

00:01:48
Speaker
Um, that 90 show.
00:01:51
Speaker
season two b whatever part three over there calling in on that looks came out yesterday and ended up watching the first half uh... so far we have the miss he is in a cameo in the first or second episode uh... jane bob come back jane silent bob uh... there's a whole cartoon montage in like the third episode of doug funny from nickelodeon and betsy calso who was shannon elizabeth and Kelso's daughter in that 70s show comes back for the first time since then since that 70s show the finale whenever Kelso left um And she's she's of course older than the other kids. So she's probably in her 20s now and Yeah, she's and she's dating one of the other kids that are in the basement. So I
00:02:43
Speaker
Overall, the first half I've watched is okay. I mean, like you knew you seen you saw the first season. It is It is what it is. But yeah, I've got a couple, I've got like half, I think four episodes left. There's eight episodes per half they've put out. so um Then we're going to talk about a couple of movies.
00:03:02
Speaker
um A pair of movies, because one came out 20 years ago, one just came out. First one is Twisters, or Twister. It came out in 1996. Based off of Michael Crichton's book, it's an adaptation of that. I had no idea until I did some research on it. I was going to say, I had no idea until you put that in the notes. oh But yeah, kind of cool. I used to read a lot of his books, so maybe I'll check that one out.
00:03:26
Speaker
He actually wrote the screenplay for the movie as well. I think I knew that, but I didn't know it was based on his book. Yep. ILM, famous for doing the special effects for this movie. At the time, we talked in 1996, Back to the Future was big on special effects, with the rent but there wasn't that much Maybe Forrest Gump had something in there too when they had Forrest put into like historical moments and stuff. But at that time in 1996 there was not a lot of CGI and ILM was right in charge of it. um This starred Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, who was personally picked by Michael Crichton to play this character.
00:04:05
Speaker
um Philip Seymour Hoffman, you forget how great he is and how young he was when he died. Incredible, yeah. Yep. And Kerry Elway, so he was in a lot of stuff in the 90s, of course. Men in tights, Robin Hood men in tights, he was also in Psych, he played Despero. um But yeah, it's ah it's a good good summer theater blockbuster and at the time Yeah, there weren't a lot of summer theater blockbusters. That wasn't really a thing until very the early 90s But this is one of those ones that came out like this usually like May one a year. There's like one or one or two a year. Um Yeah, this way it was also known for how many practical effects it had considered about tornadoes. Um The cow in the tree is always the classic that everyone yeah it's all posters. Yeah. Yeah yeah
00:04:51
Speaker
um yeah mean i remember one night this mid summer building Yep, very fun. They had a ride at Universal Studios. I believe yes I was gonna talk about that because i went i went about six years ago seven years ago it was the four bill pack and guy wouldn't the what didn't he die he die well but um yeah That ride was something else and bill paxon like the way he would put like he did the intro and He'd like yes do with his hands on his hips and he had these like he just stood very awkwardly so we all got a lot out of that Bill paxon rip that guy Yeah, bill pa Bill Paxton, great actor. um This movie is campy, of course. I mean, 90s campy. It's like if a tornado was Jaws and decided to come and and attack everything into this whole entire state.
00:05:38
Speaker
and the destruction that it made and it caused It's funny you said that about Tornado being Jaws because I was listening to another podcast with the actual director of the first movie and he said that he treated it like a Jaws movie. Okay. When he was filming it. When they were filming it. I get it the whole time. The whole time I was watching it, I was like, yeah, they're being chased by Jaws, so. Yep, basically. So that brings us here, 2024, and they finally make a sequel slash reboot of Twister called Twisters, starring Glenn Powell, Anthony Ramos, Maura Tierney, who was in a whole bunch of 90s movies, David Korslett, who is of course our next Superman,
00:06:19
Speaker
Yup, he was cast while filming. Kiernan Shipka has a little small cameo in the beginning. She was in the movie Totally Killer, which we loved last year. Oh yeah, the movie's great. um And James Paxton, who is Bill's son, is in this too. He's a very, very small cameo. um And there's also, i don't I don't have the name of the main girl who was in this movie, but she was great as well. um Again. She's really famous too.
00:06:45
Speaker
Tornado campiness the whole movie is a campy campy summer blockbuster movie with a ton of ton of Like love stuff mixed in between there like the guy the guy and the girl are falling in love between you're facing being chased by tornadoes Okay, I don't know what else she's been in but she's great in this I don't know. No, no, I don't know who that is but no Yeah, I don't remember but um Yeah, overall I like the first one a lot better.
00:07:19
Speaker
And I think not having a connection to the first one there really wasn't the only thing they had That was really a connection to the first one. I think you saw Dorothy which was the The robot that they put up into the tornado. I think you saw that in the beginning of the movie brief briefly. Yeah But other than that, the movie is a whole standalone story in a tornado in a tornado universe, a twister universe, if you if you will. But, you know, I figured there may be a connection to Helen Hunt or somebody, but they didn't yeah i agree to come back. Yeah, maybe be a kid or something of those characters or nephew or something.
00:07:54
Speaker
Yeah, but they went totally away from that. Um, this girl, the new girl in this movie is a science, this is a, uh, she can kind of read tornadoes, kind of like the Bill Paxton Helen Hunt character could in the first movie. She understands the atmosphere. She understands when the air gets thicker, that the tornado is going to come down. She understands all of it, how they're going to happen, where this she can chase them. If she sees two, she can tell which one's going to fade and which one's going to build. And that that's basically what what they, what she does in the movie. Um, and Glenn Powell,
00:08:20
Speaker
He's he's the leading man right now. He is in everything He's gonna be in a whole bunch of reboots and think he's doing running man and another big one too. boot Yes years and And everybody he's been fancasting all the Marvel DC. Oh my god, every Marvel DC thing. He's been fancast all all around But overall decent movie good summer blockbuster yeah um Story is kind of wanky. Yeah, its it's for it's for a it's this is a theater experience movie For sure. I mean it would have been good. I think you saw in the theater. So what was your take?

Critique and Analysis: The Crow Remake

00:08:51
Speaker
Oh, no, I didn't I saw it this week. i thought Oh, I thought you did I thought you wouldn't I never did. Yeah, first no um, the only thing to this movie shows um
00:09:00
Speaker
like we always talk about the scene we talk man of seal but the issue I have with that scene mostly is they run to an overpass and anyone that lives in an area with tornadoes knows for a fact you do not go to a fucking overpass it's the and worst place to be in a tornado it's like swimming during a lightning storm ah And this shows exactly why that's a very dangerous place to be yeah um during a tornado in the opening scene, which is actually pretty terrifying. um Yeah, it is. happens in that scene Very cool, very, very cool scene. I enjoyed this movie a lot.
00:09:31
Speaker
um I mean, everyone that does their job fine acting. yeah um It was shot pretty well. um I would do wish I saw it in theory because some of those scenes were really cool on the big screen. Yeah. um And you know how much I prefer going to a theater than watching at home. But yeah, overall, it's all three and a half. It's fun. Yep. Three and a half for me, too, is a fun movie. Yep. um And yeah, I just wish there was a little bit more connection to the first one. but Yes.
00:09:57
Speaker
it's It's a full standalone story on itself, so you don't have to watch the first one, really. There's no connection at all, really. so Um, and they're at one point Glenn Powell says that they're entering a suck zone and I thought, wow, this is the best meme mobile moment this movie's gonna have. Um, so before we get into the news, Kevin watched a movie last night. Um, and I decided, I decided not to watch it. Number one, I don't have regal unlimited in um anymore. Number two, I did not like the trailer when I saw it. Cause I did like the first movie that this movie is based off of where the comic book is based off of.
00:10:29
Speaker
We'll get into all that in a minute, but um you watched the remake of The Crow starring Bill Skarsgard. I did. The movie has um this movie's been in developmental hell for a while. The first person that was going to star in this, well, that we know of was um Jason Momoa. That was the big one for years. It was the guy from Boardwalk Empire was originally cast. ah No, Luke Evans was originally cast, then the guy from Boardwalk. Yeah, I heard that.
00:10:57
Speaker
that's that's that's the lineage of the casting um but yeah this movie um i think when it debuted on rotten tomatoes i had like a six percent i had a six percent yes by the time i got a theater exact 22 i don't know what it's at now um and i think the biggest issue that people have with this movie and i had with it is that it's an eric and chelly story But it could have just been like, there's like seven crow movies. It could have just been any two other names. But when you take a movie that's so iconic, like The Crow, and you just completely change the story oh and make it its own thing, you might as well just change the characters. Because these aren't Eric and Shelley to me. I know they're trying to do it for a whole new generation. um So that part really did not work. The first act, which I thought going into it um would happen, did happen. it They show you the love story.
00:11:50
Speaker
um So you get to know these characters for the first 35, 40 minutes in the movie. um But instead, it wasn't as powerful as the fact that in the first movie, we barely knew Shelley at all. like She was in like flashbacks for like brief moments. like We did not know Shelley at all. yeah And we felt I felt more for her than I did for FK8 twigs this entire film.
00:12:12
Speaker
um so you get the love story in the first act or so um then he ends up basically in like this you see in the trailers where he gets pushed into the water yeah didn't come and then like wakes up that's like a it's like a purgatory and every time he goes into water he goes back into this purgatory so he does this a couple times throughout the film the love story stuff would have worked better if it was written better it's some of them some very cheesy dialogue like i'm talking like episode two prequel cheesy dialogue ah so i heard i heard that it was being compared to hate and christians in his performance was compared to no his performance the dialogue you can only do so much for the dialogue
00:12:54
Speaker
he is awesome uh scars guard put it on this role an awesome act with the limited yeah with the limited amount of of stuff he had to work with but um but the whole thing is like she did something in her past and they don't tell you till towards the end And when you find out what it is, you've already seen a lot of brutal stuff happen, which when the violence hits is fucking really good. It's really violent. It's really good. um Really well choreographed. But you've already been like kind of desensitized to it, and then you see what happened with her.
00:13:33
Speaker
and you're like that's not that bad um i'm kind of as spoiler free as possible because Ray's gonna watch us once it's out and we're gonna do yes probably a couple weeks uh maybe in October um yeah probably October so yeah basically he kind of decides that he doesn't want to like fight for her anymore and he goes back into this purgatory you see when he gets shot in the bathtub um in the trailer he ends up back in the purgatory and he's like i don't know if i want to do this anymore and there's this guy in the purgatory i don't even know his fucking name but he's basically like well you've lost your chance now and then he's like what if i trade my soul for hers
00:14:12
Speaker
So the guy's like, it's not my choice. Well, uh, crows fly around him. Crow goes through him. He ends up out of the bathtub, takes a shotgun, fucks two or three guys up. And this is the point in the movie where he just goes complete vengeance.
00:14:27
Speaker
and there's a really cool all that stuff at the end is all like the opera um it takes place at an opera and it's fucking violent as hell like i don't know how the director said he did not have to go back and forth with the MPAA much which is weird because i was like this shit is fucking wild like some of the stuff that happens with the opera um when he first to backtrack a little bit when he first becomes the crow and he can feel everything. Like Eric Draven in the original one didn't show like any like that he could feel anything really and this like every time he gets shot he screams. He shoots a dude so he doesn't get shocked he doesn't want to feel the pain. It's like Wolverine with the claws. Like yes he heals but every time the claws come out it hurts him.
00:15:08
Speaker
Right. um when he go When he goes back in as like the vengeance, vengeful character, like I was saying, he can still feel it, but he doesn't act like it. Like he just goes straight like fucking God mode on everyone. A couple issues I have with this movie is in the first one, you get to know the bad guys almost as much as Eric and Shelley. Yes, we do. So they all have names, Tim Tim, whatever else.
00:15:31
Speaker
In this, they're just bad guy number one, two, three, four, five. Like nobody has names, like it's whatever. Um, there's a twist at the villain I did not care for. We'll talk about that when you see it. Um, did not care for the ending at all. Um,
00:15:49
Speaker
But as far as everyone was talking about like the tattoos and the Joker look, that's all part of this character. And I think it works really well in the way this movie was done. um like the The paint he puts on his eyes that obviously isn't from the comic book trying to reinvent, do something new, I get it. That's actually a tattooing that he just takes out of the tattoo thing and he just does that to his eyes.
00:16:12
Speaker
oh So overall, I'm giving it a two and a half out of five. um It's not the worst movie I've seen this year, that's for sure. I'll be looking forward to seeing it again to see how I feel, any different if I feel any any differently about it. um The violence itself is what gives it that two and a half, it was just really well done and really good.
00:16:36
Speaker
um but this the writing was just awful that he makes some very nonsensical choices in the movie like I just explained one um a lot of it is just nonsense um but yeah two and a half out of five five out of ten um it's not But it should have not been Eric and Shelley, is like my main thing with this movie. oh Like if they just made this for the $50 million dollars and sold to a streamer is another crow movie, they probably would have made their money back easily.
00:17:09
Speaker
um But yeah, we'll get into it in about a month probably, I'm guessing. Okay. oh but yeah the other thing The other thing I wanted to bring up is they banned guns on the set, which I thought was interesting because of what happened to Brendan Lee in the first movie. um The director pretty much went out and said that because of what happened and what happened on the rough set with, them with yeah what's his name? We decided to ban all guns, all ah yes all fire firing mechanisms.
00:17:35
Speaker
um Yeah, I can't wait to see it kind of I do like the first one and it's one of those movies I watched personallyly the things the first ones like a timeless classic so if you're gonna read booty or redo it like um Real quick when Jason Momoa was attached and with the guy from Boardwalk and Luke Evans were attached James O'Barr was working on the script with the script writers to do basically a one-to-one screen adaptation of the comic book, but I guess they couldn't crack it and and they ended up doing something completely different and kind of off the rails. I just wish we got kind of a one-to-one version of the comic or something close to it. Because even the first crow isn't like that. First crow is also very different from the comic. Cool. Yeah, looking forward to talking about that. I think we're talking about the comic book a little bit too when that comes out. Yeah. We'll have to see if I can get my hands on one. um So that being said, let's get into the news.
00:18:37
Speaker
And it's not a new someone with a trailer roundup. Some interesting trailers this week.

Upcoming Trailers and Releases

00:18:43
Speaker
First one is called Y2K. This movie is a 824 movie thriller uh what happened that we lived through Y2K so we knew the big thing back then was all the computers were going to reset that was the big fear that once the clocks turned to 2000 that everything was going to reset didn't happen of course but it was a fear it was a fear all all throughout that whole entire time so they they went back this is produced by Jonah Hill
00:19:13
Speaker
um Kyle Mooney from SNL directed it. He stars in it as well. um They go back and they tell the story of what would have happened if all the electronics went nuts. And I think some of them went sentient. That's what the trailer shows. And what would happen if this turned into a horror-like movie were where all the robots and everything in the world decided to attack the people when the year 2000 all of a sudden yeah took place. um Ashley i looked very funny, very good. I didn't hear anything about that.
00:19:42
Speaker
Yeah, I didn't hear anything about this movie till this year, till this week. So I'm very excited for that. um Rachel Ziegler is starring in that, too. And Julian Dennison, who is in Deadpool Deadpool, too. um He plays a camera his name, but we just talked about him last month. Then there's this new series coming in on prime on December 10th called Secret Level.
00:20:07
Speaker
um I don't know if you saw the trailer, this was everywhere. it' so It's almost like an anime, computer style um show. um But they're taking it, it's like an anthology series with stories from video games like Pac-Man, Mega Man, Dungeons and Dragons, the other PlayStation games, whole bunch of different genres, except for nick nickon Nickelodeon. Except for Nintendo, because that's Nintendo.
00:20:33
Speaker
um But it does look pretty good. I don't know like what we're going to see in this. I don't know what kind of characters we're going to see. um But Dungeons and Dragons, that's pretty cool. And having Mega Man, I mean, these are just all like generic.
00:20:47
Speaker
90s 80s characters but trailer looks pretty good. Got some brand new posters for only murders in the building which comes out next week. um In the trailer for this they showed that everyone um Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez are going to l LA because they're going to be making a movie based on their podcast and the people that are going to be playing them, Zac Galifianakis is going to be playing Martin Short Ivo Longoria is going to be playing Selena Gomez. And in the trailer, when you see lugie Eugene Levy trying to play Steve Martin, it is hilarious and I cannot wait to see this season. It starts on Tuesday, I believe, just in a few days. yeah If you haven't watched Only Merged in the building, it's on Hulu. um And I believe there's a couple episodes that usually air the first the first week, and this cell weekly show comes out every week after that.
00:21:41
Speaker
Um, so a brand new trailer for the war of Rohirren. This is a Lord of the Rings animated looks very much anime and and inspired story. I don't really like that look and they don't either. That's what I was going to mention. I don't either. Um, we're going to be getting a live action Gollum movie. I'm more excited for that. I'm more excited for more. I'm more excited for rings of power, which starts next year. Yep. Um, but yeah. Uh, we also got a news trailer for shrinking coming on October 16th.
00:22:11
Speaker
Bring it all back the whole entire cast including Harrison Ford Excited for that and the best the best story of the week. I I love this story Yeah, they first is for copal over at least a megalopolis trailer. This is a mess It comes out on September comes out on September 27th officially rated R starring um starring Adam Driver Giancarlo Esposito Um, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf coming back out of nowhere, Jean Voit, Jason Sortsman, Taya Shire, who was in everything. She was in all the, uh, Godfather movies, and Rocky, of course. rocky yeah Um, Laurence Fishburne, who did the voiceover of this, and Dustin Hoffman. This is such a weird fucking cast. By the way, before we get into the whole controversy with the trailer, second trailer I've seen for this movie, and I still have no idea what this movie is about.
00:23:06
Speaker
No clue if it's time travel, what it is. We'll have to wait and see. He calls it Megalopolis of Fable. I'm going to see it in theaters. It's definitely an IMAX. it's it's It's a weird theater movie, but yeah. um But the controversy, which is fucking fantastic. um This movie came out, this trailer came out the beginning of the week, and all of a sudden in the beginning it opens up with about 30 seconds of all these quotes saying about past Francis Ford Coppola movies and how bad they are.
00:23:41
Speaker
Some of the quotes, for example, for The Godfather. A sloppy, self-indulgent movie done by somebody from The Voice. um Doesn't know what it wants to be. Same same voice article. um For Apocalypse Now, a spectacular failure.
00:23:57
Speaker
um and an epic piece of trash by the Daily News. Well, somebody decided to go back in history and so and look at these articles for these movies and realize that, wait a minute, these are fake quotes. These aren't real. This is ah this is about half of the trailer. It's all fake quotes. I don't understand the the idea behind this for the trailer. It just makes it all more confusing.
00:24:23
Speaker
But yeah, it's supposed to be done from famous film critics. Did not happen. None of these quotes were real. um And they pulled. They apologized. It pulled the trailer. So there's some places I think I sent it to you still on on Twitter and here and there. But they pulled it completely um from their socials. Then you find out today.
00:24:42
Speaker
that the guy that they did it, Eddie Egan, he was fired for the marketing campaign, but it was all done by AI. They used AI to do these fake fucking things. Like, we talk about how bad AI is, but AI doing fake critic quotes, you read, go back and read this.
00:25:01
Speaker
apocalypse now came out in the 70s an epic piece of trash that was supposedly supposed to be in an article for the daily news they don't talk they don't talk like that so it was just it's just such an interesting fucking thing that happened this week so crazy what my favorite story probably of this year so far um and i still don't know what this movie is about i don't think anybody really has any idea um well but you know what now that i think about it now that i think about it i think what they're going for is the fact that apocalypse now was panned very much i don't think it was right it was kind of panned when it came out why do you think you see actual quotes
00:25:44
Speaker
Why did they have to fake it all? That's what I don't get about it all. But yeah, oh my god. it's It's just, why did they fake it? They use AI. and Of all things, why did you have to use AI to generate these? It makes no sense, but it is great. um So let's get

Notable Box Office and Industry News

00:26:01
Speaker
into the news. Alien Romulus off to a solid start last weekend. Earned $18 million on opening day. Ended up making $41.5 million dollars in the weekend. Deadpool and Wolverine made $29 million.
00:26:14
Speaker
Um, his, uh, uh, Blake Lively's movie, his wife, Ends With Us, made another 24 million. The movie's doing pretty good. Um, but Alien Romulus delivered the second best debut for the domestic box office, um, for any of the Alien movies, I believe. I think it was, it was it Aliens or Alien that did the biggest box office? I can't remember what it was.
00:26:35
Speaker
you just blocks so i would for For the alien franchise, maybe it was ah I'm just saying it should be one of the Prometheus just based unless you're including inflation That's the biggest if they're including inflation, but it made a hundred and eight million dollars internationally 20 million in China, I believe and that was that was surprised that's surprising for the debut so pretty huge for that um And the director opened up about directing an Alien vs. Predator film with a guy who directed ah Prey on Hulu, Dan Trachtenberg.
00:27:08
Speaker
um and said, I'll direct half, he'll direct the other half. That sounds pretty cool. I like that idea. I haven't seen Alien Romulus yet. I'm looking forward to that as one of the movies. I'm actually looking forward to it. I can't wait to rewatch it. I mean, I loved it, as you know. I gave it a four and a half, even though some of it felt like it was kind of written by AI and it was put through the Disney machine. We'll talk about that when you watch it. Fucking AI. I'm not going to get over that article now.
00:27:35
Speaker
And Deadpool and Wolverine, Alien Romulus, and we had Planet of the Apes at the beginning of the year. um Avatar last year made big numbers for them. All Fox properties that Disney invested in, we always talk about the Marvel part marvel part of it, bringing Fantastic Four and bringing the X-Men. Another huge franchise, Deadpool is part of that. But the other franchises that they bought into,
00:27:59
Speaker
I've been very profitable, especially Avatar, especially Alien now, and and we've got Prey coming out. All of this stuff has been very profitable for Disney. It's a great, great investment purchase that they did. um And it's it's proving themselves now, it's proving the value what with what they bought, which is cool. um Rest in peace to Phil Donahue. Talk show host, pioneer. In our early life, he was huge. Everybody that came out after him, including Oprah, who was big,

Sally Jessie Raphael all learned from this guy there was no daytime talk show host until him his show started in 1969 when syndicated in 1970 1972 I can't remember the exact date but he was on after school every night he had the same thing that if you ever seen the Oprah show you ever seen Ellen That whole format started with him so he'd have the guest on, he'd have, he'd talk to people, he'd have, and he at the time he had like life stuff, he had life issues talked about, kind of like Dr. Phil. um The show took a little bit of a turn, went crazy.
00:29:05
Speaker
Not as crazy as like as um Jerry Springer, but pretty damn, it toed the line kind of. Show ended in 1996, and this week he died at 88 years old. So rest in peace to him. um ah Craig Mack, rapper, first one of the first hits on Bad Boy Records, um passed away a couple years ago. I can't remember exactly when, but um his family and friends revealed that his cause of death was he had HIV and AIDS.
00:29:34
Speaker
Nobody knew how he and why and how and why he died, but in a Rolling Stone interview this week, they did announce that according to his death certificate. so yeah We don't talk about Bad Boy too much anymore because of Peter, but I wanted to bring that up. We've been talking about, every once in a while, we talk about this fubu.
00:29:53
Speaker
um Lawsuit. We're talking about vent Venue, which is this new sports streaming thing that's going to be a conglomerate of Disney, Warner Brothers, and Fox. It's going to have all these sports streaming available on this one thing from all of those all of those all of those companies. Well, FUBU TV sued them.
00:30:13
Speaker
and actually got a job through through ah ah drug judge stop stopped that firm. I think it's supposed to come out in a couple of weeks, ah for but right before the football season started and it's not going to happen. FUBU's claim is that Venmu would sustainably lessen competition and restrain trade. So in other words, having all of that all in one place, you're not having you're almost a monoly monopoly of everything rather than. right so yeah we'll see where we'll see where that goes it's it's an interesting idea
00:30:43
Speaker
having all of that accessible in one app i do like that idea but um i can kind of see where fubo' is coming from that as well Speaking of streaming, the weirdest streaming news this week is Chick-fil-A is launching a streaming service.
00:30:57
Speaker
They'll be family friendly at Chick-fil-A. We don't have any around here, but we know about it. They're not open on Sunday because they're very religious ah to the fact where they don't go on church day. So they over work so this that what they want to do is they want to have um talks to license and acquire content. And it's going to be all family friendly stuff that all kids and and adults of all ages can see. I'm guessing probably a lot of religious stuff too. But yeah, it's actually a thing that's going to happen. so It's weird news.
00:31:27
Speaker
Um, I haven't talked about this on the podcast.

Legal and Controversial Issues in Media

00:31:30
Speaker
I'm going to bring it up now. Did you hear about this Disney thing with this, with this, uh, person that died at Disneyland? I think it was for a poison or something. And they tried to sue Disney for this, but because the husband had a Disney plus account years ago for a trial and in that document,
00:31:54
Speaker
There's actually listing in the document saying any arbitration you have to do, you have to do it. I can't remember the exact wording, but the way they worded it is you can't, you can't, you can't sue us basically for anything. You have to do it a whole other way. It's like the human such a pad episode of South Park. Yes. do you click za or agreement But it was a trial. and Anyway, this guy tried to sue because his wife died because of on the, on their park, or on their property.
00:32:24
Speaker
and Disney is like no no no well they got they got in so much trouble so much slack from it that they backtracked from it um and they then they stopped pushing against it and they're gonna let it go they're gonna let the file a lawsuit be filed um the other thing i don't know if we've ever talked about it on this on the podcast i've heard it so many times nobody has officially ever died on a Disney property did you know that I did not. Like if you're decapitated or anything, you don't die on the property. They take you out of the property into the parking lot and they pronounce you dead there because they don't want to have any deaths on there. Did you ever hear about this? It's a fucking crazy. This happens, especially in Disneyland. This is where I've heard it. but You listen to podcasts. I used to listen to podcasts out of LA. So you hear about like at Disneyland, somebody would die like a decapitation or something or even injury, bodily injury or anything.
00:33:19
Speaker
Doesn't happen in the park at all. It happens outside the park. They drag them out of the park and actually pronounce them dead out there. Fucking crazy. Nobody ever talks about it. ah Very interesting. They'll look that up. um But yeah. Wiseguy. Brand new documentary. Two part coming out on September 7th.
00:33:36
Speaker
David Chase and the Sopranos. Very interested on this. I watched Sopranos a couple years ago. ah Great show. I know you watched it too a couple, of like last year, I think year before, but a great show. um I can't wait to watch that. And of course, it's an iconic show. It's like everybody's top show. It's going to be on Mac's HBO. So, excited for that. Rotten Tomatoes. Coming out with a new verified hot badge. Instead of tomatoes, it's going to be popcorn.
00:34:03
Speaker
and uh the very first one they did i believe was Deadpool and Wolverine and i think they did another one this week and uh well the one that's causing all the controversy because i've been on twitter all week is uh blue beetle because there's a certain segment of a certain fan base that is very upset that bots are now making blue beetle over 90 um and they're saying why can't why isn't a certain um Justice League movie or even Christopher Nolan movies why why aren't they why don't they get it because they've got a higher rating and they started the verification system in 2019 for audiences so those movies well streaming movies can never be qualified for because you can't verify that and obviously the Dark Knight trilogy happened in the early 2000s.
00:34:48
Speaker
so that's why and like yeah a lot of people because Rotten Tomatoes is like like they put up like Deadpool Wolverine or they put up you know whatever other movies that are in there there's like five or six they kept promoting Blue Beetle is one of them and it caused quite a stir on uh comic book twitter but yeah uh i i like Rotten Tomatoes for what it is especially i like it for the reviews because you get it was just one place you get all the reviews in one place yes and it and it doesn't and it doesn um it it does a average of that which is cool But the audience stuff, they supposedly are verified. I don't know how the verification process happens. I don't i don't get on any of that. I don't think anybody really does. Supposedly they are verified. You have to upload a movie ticket. um Okay. And like if you use an app, you just have to you have to show that you went.
00:35:37
Speaker
But you can technically, like with the Regal Pass, I could say if I wanted to review Bomb the Crow, I could just pay 50 cents, get the ticket, and then just be like, up you know, so you could still get it rounded if that's the way it works. I'm not sure if it is, I'm just guessing. But the review, the the actual reviews, and they always follow, I always follow the ones that are, that are the higher ones, like Hollywood Reporter, Variety, whatever, New York Post, whatever. um But yeah. um Adam Sandler says that Happy Gilmore 2 is going to start filming soon in a couple of weeks.
00:36:07
Speaker
um Cass is going to be including Travis Kelce. He talked about on his podcast a while ago how he wanted to be a part of this movie. um and Adam Salem jumped to the chest and hired him to be on there. Speaking of Travis Kelce, speaking of him, i um when you're playing the new Madden as the Chiefs and he catches a touchdown, Taylor Swift is in Madden now.
00:36:29
Speaker
Oh, you're fucking kidding me. Or somebody that looks like Taylor Swift wearing 87 jerseys and men now. I don't know if somebody did that it know if somebody did that with a hack, but I saw it going around Facebook, I think. um If I see it again, I'll send it to you, but it could be a hack. but yeah I'm excited for Happy Gilmore 2. The only thing is, there's no Chubs. But we got Shooter McGavin. We've got Adam Sandler back. No Bob Barker. But maybe he'll be part of the pro team with him and Adam. That'd be cool. Yeah. Maybe a movie that's happened a little bit too late.
00:37:00
Speaker
But, I mean, we saw Beverly Hills cop Axel F the beginning of the summer, so. yeah for for For now, and of course, it's a Netflix thing, so I'm all for it.

Film Announcements and Casting News

00:37:10
Speaker
Speaking of reboots or movies that have sequels, Rush Hour 4 is being pitched by it to multiple studios from Brett Ratner, who was cancelled for sexual assault allegations.
00:37:22
Speaker
um I love the Rush Hour movie. Rush Hour 2 is okay. Rush Hour 3 is very strange. There's some funny moments, but it's... Chris Tucker is Chris Tucker. You're going to get what you're going to get. Just like him in Friday. You're going to get what you're going to get and that's what you're going to pay for. um I don't know what they can tell for the story. I mean, of course, buddy, cop, comedy, the two of them work great together. Jackie and him, Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker.
00:37:50
Speaker
Brett Ratner is actually shopping this around, which I'm surprised he's even attached to it, but I think it's kind of like his project, his thing. He may even own it, I don't know. but ah But yeah, I know that the original studio, I think it's New Line maybe, I can't remember who it was, passed on it because of Brett Ratner. A lot of people are passing on it. but So I don't know who would actually pick up something like this. but another weird but cool once you actually hear about it story this week was anaconda movie that came out in 1997 1996 starring jaylo yep um ice cube i believe it's q right yeah yep i used to love that movie that movie was like one of my childhood favorites i loved it yeah good movie good movie um but they're going to be viewing a reimagining of that movie starring paul rudd
00:38:35
Speaker
and Jack Black in a dark comedy now you look at that you say what the fuck are they doing this but what they're gonna be doing in the movie is they're gonna be recreating anaconda from the 90s they're gonna be coming in there the exact quote It reportedly focused on a group of friends who are facing midlife crises and set off to remake their favorite movie from their youth. But when they head to the jungle, things get real quickly. It's not confirmed who Black or Rudd will play, but two of the lead characters are described as a video moonlighting and and director moonlighting as a wedding but video videographer and an actor whose career peak was a stint on a cop show. So no idea what this is about. um
00:39:15
Speaker
And John Voight was in that movie too. That's right. The original. Yes. Owen Wilson. Yeah. 1997. I have it all right here. I don't know why I don't read the fucking notes I put here. But the guy who wrote Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Yes. And Axel Laffhard is going to be co-writing this and directing it. That's good. That sounds cool. I like that. If it's metal, like, bearable weight of massive talent, it should be really good.
00:39:39
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. So we'll wait and see on that. um I already had, I don't know why I had that on there twice. Ryan Johnson finished filming a Wake Up Deadman this week, the new Knives Out movie. I don't, do you remember when this movie's coming out? 2025? Is that when it's coming out? 2025, yeah. Probably, I'm guessing if you just finished, you'll probably work them out in November like the last one. Yep, yep. And then Christmas first streamers. Yep.
00:40:03
Speaker
Um, Australian office, the office coming out, there's an adaptation coming out on prime on October 18th. They're actually going to be having a US prime too. Um, I know India had, India had a reboot of the office as well. And of course America, they're doing another reboot of the office set in another and a newspaper plant or factory or somewhere. Um, yeah, they don't much know much about that, but, uh, yeah. Um, wow. Why'd I have that in there twice too? Wow. I got to check my notes more often.
00:40:32
Speaker
um Travis Kelce is going to be doing an action comedy calling are called Loose Cannons from Lionsgate. I don't know much more about that, but the John Rick director is on board to produce it. um Yeah, I don't know anything more about that, but Travis Kelce is everywhere nowadays. um Claudia Dumet, who was in he was in The Boys, she played ah Victoria Newman. yeah um She's joined the cast of Soulmate, the Megan spinoff.
00:41:02
Speaker
But the the be dancing doll, the AI doll that came out last year around at this time. I think she's actually engaged to Huey. Yes, she is. They're there together, yep. A prequel to Pacific Rim is happening, a series. Going to be looking for a TV deal under, I don't know i don't know what's going on with that. But yeah, Pacific Rim, I saw the first one. I don't think I ever saw the second one. I don't know. um I think John Boyega was in the second one.
00:41:30
Speaker
I remember Charlie Hunnam was in the first one, but the but yeah. Glenn Powell talked about him earlier. He's gonna be doing a new movie on Hulu called Chad Powers, our new series. um And he looks very unrecognizable in the first photo that they posted of him. Prosthetic nose, looks like his broken nose, weird long hair, weird weird weird mustache, looks just strange.
00:41:55
Speaker
um Denzel Washington talking a lot about Gladiator 2. He doesn't do a lot of movies nowadays. um He's getting older. He's almost 70, if not 70. Talking about there are are few very few films left for me to make that I'm interested in. He's only taking the good projects, working with the good director. He yeah hit it off so well with Ridley Scott talking about Gladiator 2. He did that most of his career, like how many bad movies has he been in? Three? Maybe? yeah later yeah later and later in life here we are, and his son's a great actor too. Oh yeah, I heard ah ah Ridley Scott, actually I heard this today, that Ridley Scott says this is the best movie he's ever made. Yep, I heard that too. That's a Tall Order from the guy that created the Alien, yeah right or whatever, like and I mean Gladiator is one of the greatest movies of all time, so yeah if this is that good, we're in for something special.
00:42:46
Speaker
Yep, has a great cast. ah Pedro's in it. Joseph Quinn's in it. Yeah, it does look good. The trail looks good. and ah We talked about this last week with Todd Phillips' Hulk Hogan biopic starring Chris Helmsworth.
00:43:00
Speaker
They're like, what the hell is going to happen with that? Now they've got the Ben Affleck one happening. Well, Todd Phillips has been talking a lot about the Joker and he announced that that movie is no longer happening. The one with ah Chris Helmsworth, the one that he was going to direct. um Kind of figured something was going on there. I think Hogan was talking about it too. Hulk Hogan was actually a part of that movie. I mean, he mentioned on a podcast, I think, Chris Van Fleet or somebody talking about how there was issues with the script like right around Christmas time of last year.
00:43:27
Speaker
um And I think Netflix was producing it and there was problems with Netflix trying to get rice to stuff or something going on there Yes, it probably just drowned out the movie I'm guessing but Todd Felix is of course busy doing the Joker too and who knows what it'll do after that but um Rest in peace to the Acolyte, a show that nobody liked in the Star Wars world. um the old i liked part I liked parts of it. um I wish we could have seen a continuation of Manny, whatever his name is, that played the Sith kid.
00:43:58
Speaker
Um, and I wish we could have seen more Darth Plagueis, which was the only thing I really wanted to see in that show happen. and We only saw a very, very quick glimpse in a cave. Yeah, that's it. Um, but yeah, um, it was a hundred years that before Phantom Menace. And we're not going to know anything about that story. The worst part of that show was the twins. Nobody gave a fuck about them. Nobody gave a fuck yeah about the characters. The only one that we mentioned every single week was Saul and they killed them off in the last episode. So.
00:44:25
Speaker
Saul and the bad, and Smiloh ran to the other ones that anyone really cared about. And what's her name? X23. I forgot her name on the show. Yeah, she died quick too. She died quick too. So rest in peace to that show. Disney also got rid of all the merchandise, removed it from the Disney store immediately. I think they put it back today because they outcry. Everybody wanted to get that Smiloh ran helmet.
00:44:51
Speaker
yeah Yeah, we're not gonna know any more about that. I wonder how they're gonna go on the second market. People buying them and putting them on eBay. Yeah, what do we see, yeah. um November 1st, Disney Plus. There's going to be a new documentary on John Williams. We just talked about John Williams this last year. We talked we had a whole introspective about him. um This is going to be talking about his life and career of, of course, the legendary composer of all the movies we loved growing up. um yeah It's going to have a limited theatrical release, but it's going to be beginning streaming on November 1st on Disney Plus. So kind of excited about that, speaking of Star Wars.
00:45:27
Speaker
um They released a new poster for The Joker, fully adieu, a little over a month away. um Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix, of course. um Michael Keaton is talking more about Batgirl and how it was cancelled. And they asked him, ah what do you think about it? And he's like, oh I didn't really care. One way or another, big fun, nice check.
00:45:48
Speaker
Very right to the point. I'm glad he said that. um He said he did like the guys who directed. I liked those boys, the nice guys, hoping all the best for him. But yeah, one of those movies that or whatever, I wish we could have seen, but it's lost in the animals' history. That quote kind of reminds me of when they asked Michael Caine about Jaws 4, and he goes, never seen it, but I saw that house that bought me. Yeah.
00:46:13
Speaker
Yeah, exactly. Brian Cox says cinema is in a very bad way because of um movies like Deadpool and Wolverine.

Cinema Industry Reflections and Criticisms

00:46:22
Speaker
I really think he's bitter because he wasn't a part of it to be honest with you. um Because of course he was in one of the very first comic book movies that took the world by storm. He played Stryker in X2, X-Men United.
00:46:35
Speaker
um But yeah, the quote was, what hat what what's happened is that television is doing what cinema used to do. I think cinema is in a very bad way. I think it's lost its place because of, partly, the grandiose element between Marvel, DC, and all of that. And I think it's beginning to implode, actually. You're kind of losing the plot, I don't think so. I just think people are bitter, like him. Martin Scorsese says the tain it same type of shit, too. That comic book movies aren't cinema. Depends on how the writing is, it could be cinema.
00:47:04
Speaker
The Dark Knight, what cinema? Guardians of the Galaxy, what cinema? Logan, what cinema? Depends on the movie, but depends on how you see those movies as well as being a bitter fuck that are in your 70s and 80s, still making movies.
00:47:21
Speaker
um We talked about this a while ago that somebody was killed falling on the set of Wonder Man for Disney. Well, they fined him $36,000. This is only OSHA. This wasn't the act if there's any lawsuit or anything happening, but OSHA.
00:47:36
Speaker
Find Disney that much money thirty six thousand dollars going to be going to the family I believe but What mess when anybody when anybody dies or gets really seriously injured on a set? um there was a story of the kid who was the um was the stuntman for Daniel Radcliffe for Harry Potter ended up going getting paralyzed. um There's a whole documentary. I haven't watched it's on HBO Max, but uh But yeah, hearing stories like that, it's ah it's heartbreaking, but it's part of the job too. It's kind of what you sign up for, knowing that's why you're taking those risks instead of the actors taking

Marvel and Sony's Future Projects and Rumors

00:48:10
Speaker
it. yeah spider v philiplo and chris miller um Have had a lot of controversy in the past of course they were they were directing was it solo, right? and They got fired right in the mid way through that And it seems like they're not going to be expected to renew their TV deal with Sony um Especially after spider-man noir's coming out now There isn't supposed to do a whole other reboot of spider-man for television. There's gonna be silk there's gonna be some other shows too spider-man noir was the big one that actually is going on and But ah supposedly they're being fired from all that, and of course they're big on why we're seeing all the Spider-Verse movies. ah The animated ones, of course, they weren't they were all part of that. um So we're not sure what's going on there. We're not even sure what's going to happen with the third Spider-Verse movie, because that movie was supposed to be, by now, should have been out on digital. But it was supposed to be out in March, and it has no news, no trailer, no no nothing on that movie. Completely disappeared from the schedule, so.
00:49:11
Speaker
Um, big rumors this week going around again. Cindy Swener was offered the role of Black Cat in Spider-Man 4. um I'm moving, I'm surprised we didn't hear about it either San Diego Comic Con or D23. No idea what's going on with this movie. um I know what's happening. I know the script is being finished. Tom Holland signed on. Pretty much gone official with that, so no idea what's going to happen with it. I believe, I mean we're so close to Secret Wars at this point, I'm not sure we're going to see it before or after.
00:49:43
Speaker
Or are they're gonna do the back to the future two or three thing and film the next two in a row Put one out before secret wars and one after if I were this is a full speculation if that was gonna happen The first the next better movie would be set on a ground level He would go to the secret wars fight in secret wars get the alien suit and the one that comes out after secret wars and would be the alien saga with venom and if they do that the mcu correct away which i would hope they would do and it gets the symbiote suit on secret and the planet and secret wars that'd be cool too but um that's just my fan speculation of what i would want to see but um
00:50:24
Speaker
Robert Downey Jr. revealed this week that his M.C. return as Dr. Doom started a year ago. um We talked about when we were talking about Deadpool and Wolverine and how that movie came to be and how they asked him to do the role for that movie. How he turned it down is probably because this deal has been going on for a while and he was't he wanted to have the perfect deal to come back. um He was talking to Bob Iger and um Bob Iger. It's like, yeah, we need you back.
00:50:47
Speaker
It's about time for you to come back rightfully so um He also said that when he became Iron Man in the very first movie He had a set visit with Toby McGuire on the set of spider-man to help motivate him to join the MCU in the first place ah Quote in real time. I saw how difficult they were How rewarding they could be and how popular they were becoming. This was, again, early 2000s. So by the time Spider-Man 2 came out, there was only, what, four comic book movies out at that time? So yeah, it's remarkable what he turned that whole entire character, whole entire franchise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe into.
00:51:23
Speaker
But I'm glad to see him coming back as you in in some way. um And finally in news announced today, Jay Spader is going to be returning as Ultron for the new Vision series coming on on Disney+. plus um He's been doing, Russ, I don't know his name, but he's on The Walking Dead. He's been doing the voice of Ultron since, and what if, and a few other times we've seen Ultron since Age of Ultron.
00:51:48
Speaker
But James Vader is actually coming back doing the voice. um Not surprised about this because Vision is born out of Ultron. So very excited about that. Last time we saw Vision was WandaVision. He was the White Vision. So he's what we have now and we'll have to see him wait and see where that comes from. um And that is it for the show this week. Next week, Only Murders in the Building Season 4 that premieres on Tuesday on Hulu. Terminator Zero, this is the anime um on Netflix anime show continuation of Terminator coming out on Thursday um the animation style on this looks really good though even though it's anime in place and Coming out on Thursday as well as at 9 a.m. um Lord of the Rings 3. Oh, I'm about to sneeze almost There we go ah Lord of the Rings the Rings of Power season 2 premieres on Thursday.
00:52:41
Speaker
It comes on the Amazon Prime, can't wait for that. Another show I want to bring up to you that I've been hearing a lot of great things about, have you heard about um Bad Monkey starring Vince Vaughn on Apple TV? I have, I've not seen it though because I'm on Apple TV right now. Yeah, I have it too. I'm going to watch an episode of the show and I'll tell you how it is. um and we'll If it's any good, we'll we'll definitely watch it.
00:53:03
Speaker
Okay. ah Yeah, that's that's it for now. We have a lot of stuff. We're gonna talk about September stuff next week, but we're getting into football seasons. We're gonna pick out some football movies. I know we have a few from last year that kind of kind of stuck stuck the side. I was also thinking we should probably, I know, doesn't basketball start in a couple months too, like October usually? It does. It starts, ah season just starts end of October, early in November.
00:53:27
Speaker
We got we got we got basketball. We've got hockey. Maybe we could do that in October November, too I know there's some great hockey movies like miracle. I know there's some great basketball movies to like hosiers and a whole bunch of other ones um So maybe we'll do that as well as the football movies to getting into the sports season of everything um I'm surprised we haven't done that with baseball movies and in the in the april in April or March We'll do that. We'll line that up for next April. Yeah, that's good. Let's do some movies yep and we also if you if you're if you've listened to the show for a while you know in october is our halloween month that kevin pretty much cultivates all the movies i'm going to be watching the only movies the only movies we've we've talked about really is maxine which i've been holding off on even though it's not really a horror movie but we've been holding off on that um and uh you mentioned don't breathe i put that in the list of stuff we're definitely watching don't breathe i can't wait for you watch that
00:54:21
Speaker
And we're also going to be doing Batman's Batman bat man and Long Halloween. We're going to be reviewing that as well. I just ordered my my graphic novel a couple of days ago, so I'll be here in a couple of days. But very we're also going to be rewatching Joker, the first one with Joaquin Phoenix and talking about that as well.
00:54:37
Speaker
and and Since Lin-Manuel Miranda is coming out with a concept album on the Warriors, which you tell me is a great movie We're gonna be watching that that month too. So a lot of stuff coming up in the pipeline We'll talk about a we'll talk about September as well. We've got a lot of shows coming out a lot of movies coming out um And of course everything that we want to see now that we've been that Kevin's been talking about that I haven't gone to the theater and see especially aliens Should be out in the next month or so. I was excited for that. Yep So thanks everybody and we'll talk to you next week. Peace Peace.
