Introduction: Success Hindrances

00:00:19
Speaker
Hi guys, welcome to the Alion and Nita podcast where we get down to business every week. My name is Alion and I am so excited to have you join me for this week's show.

The Importance of Rest

00:00:31
Speaker
If you have been following along with me, you know that I am in the middle of a series entitled success hindrances where I talk to you about the things that could be hindering you from success.
00:00:43
Speaker
Last week I did my first installment and this week I am going to talk to you about resting. You have probably heard the saying, I'll sleep when I'm dead or rest is for the week. Well, the truth of the matter is rest is for the living and it really takes a lot of strength to know when and how to rest.
00:01:06
Speaker
And so I want to talk to you about why it's important for you to rest, when do you need to rest, and how do you do it.

Benefits of Rest

00:01:14
Speaker
So let's start off with why resting is important. First of all, it allows your body to recuperate.
00:01:21
Speaker
Now I'm pretty sure you've heard on Good Morning America or you've probably read some kind of health article that talked about the benefits of resting and so you know that it allows you to obviously recoup your body but it also helps you become creative. I've became extremely creative at the really good naps really work
00:01:44
Speaker
It helps boost your immune system. It helps with your memory. It gives you energy. I mean, it's just countless. You can lose weight. They often say if you're trying to lose weight, you should rest. So there are countless benefits for your body when you rest. The second thing is it gives your brain a break.
00:02:07
Speaker
Sometimes when your brain is working and you're thinking and you're going at a fast pace, you can get headaches and migraines and sinus headaches. So sometimes to just take a minute away from what you're doing and close your eyes or go to sleep altogether, it helps your brain get a break.

Rest and Perspective

00:02:26
Speaker
The third thing is it helps you get fresh perspective. Sometimes when we are so focused on accomplishing a goal or accomplishing a task that we neglect the fact that we need fresh perspective.
00:02:44
Speaker
you can be all in and you can't figure out what the problem is or how to solve the problem and resting allows you to get brand new fresh perspective. When you take time to rest you can ask people questions and you can actually get feedback and actually be able to analyze what you've learned along the way so that
00:03:07
Speaker
you'll be able to go forward with a great stride and have success in whatever it is that you're trying to accomplish. So resting will refresh your perspective if you allow it to.

Rest for Emotional Processing

00:03:20
Speaker
So when do you need to rest?
00:03:22
Speaker
you need to rest at the traumatic event. If you lost a loved one, if you've gotten a divorce or had a breakup or maybe it's been like an argument or something like that, sometimes you need to rest. Resting, I just said, gives you fresh perspective so it helps you, you know, when you rest you gain strategy on how to become victorious the next go round. And so
00:03:47
Speaker
After a traumatic event, you definitely need to rest and give yourself a time to process. If you lost someone you love, you need to allow yourself to grieve. You need to give yourself room to mourn, to cry, to write, to whatever it is that you do, to do whatever it is that you do to help you get better and get back on your feet.

Learning and Strategy through Rest

00:04:08
Speaker
You need to rest after a long project. At the extended work amount of hours or trying to get a huge project done, you need to take a break to celebrate yourself and say job well done. You need to take a break to learn what you messed up at and what you can work on and how you can tighten up processes.
00:04:32
Speaker
Like, resting allows you to reflect. And if you're not resting, you won't have time to reflect, so you won't have time to get better. You need to rest after a setback or a heartbreak of any kind. So sometimes, you know, I know that I'm one to power through hard times. I'm like, I'm just gonna keep pushing. I'm gonna keep going. I'm not gonna even worry about it.
00:04:56
Speaker
but what I end up doing is missing the opportunity to learn moments in those opportunities. So after a setback, you need to reassess how did this happen? Why did this happen? What could I have done better? And Resting provides that for

Practical Rest Tips

00:05:11
Speaker
you.
00:05:11
Speaker
So how do you rest? You rest by just stepping away sometimes. Sometimes you need to just put the phone down, back away from the laptop, walk out of the room, go in your car, close your eyes for 15 minutes and rest. Or you need to just go home altogether and go to bed or quit.
00:05:31
Speaker
sometimes it's just that like just quit and I'm not saying like give up all together but sometimes you need to quit and walk away and then start over again you need to completely unplug turn off social media turn off your TV turn off your phone and give yourself time to rest
00:05:52
Speaker
Get a hobby, go golfing, go skating, do some extreme fitness or whatever it is. Get a hobby that does not involve the goal in mind. You need to get out and have some fun.
00:06:08
Speaker
And finally, I would say enjoy your family and friends, get around people that you like, not just people that are business people or colleagues of yours, but get around people that you really enjoy and that will bring you joy and share a good belly laugh and enjoy the people around you. And like honestly, you will know, you will start to learn the needs when you hang around people that you really enjoy.
