Introduction to David and Goliath
00:00:00
Speaker
Hello there friends, how are you today? My name is Brendan Thomas Marrett and today we're going to look at the story of David and Goliath, one of the most iconic stories in the whole Bible.
00:00:16
Speaker
And to be honest with you, you know, a confrontation between and Skywalker and Darth Vader and Harry Potter, Voldemort, all these iconic one-on-one climactic clashes probably would not exist were it not for this story.
00:00:37
Speaker
This is the ultimate story of the underdog taking on this titanic brute force. and winning.
00:00:49
Speaker
So let's get stuck into it.
Battle Preparations and Goliath's Challenge
00:00:51
Speaker
1 Samuel 17, verse 1. Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war and assembled at Soco intuda largest try in tribe in Israel.
00:01:05
Speaker
They picked camp at Ephes Damim between Soco and Ezekiah. Saul and the Israelites assembled and camped to the Valley of Elah and drew up their battle line to meet the Philistines.
00:01:19
Speaker
are back again. Philistines occupied one hill and the Israelites another, with valley between them. So you've got the Israelites over here, the Philistines over here, and the valley, that's no man's land.
00:01:37
Speaker
Now 2 Samuel 21, 15 to 22, tells us that there were four giants involved in this battle. Ishbi Ben-Ob was in the Philistine camp.
00:01:50
Speaker
There was Saf. There was Lamy. And there was another guy with six fingers on each hand and six toes in each foot.
00:02:02
Speaker
But more powerful than all of them, verse 4 tells us, was a champion named Goliath. So you've got four who you don't read it about in too much detail here.
00:02:14
Speaker
And then there's a Goliath as well, the most famous or infamous of them all. So five giants. Keep that mind, it'll be important later.
00:02:25
Speaker
His height was, it's says here, six cubits and a span. Some people are more used to feet and inches. I was raised correctly under the metric system.
00:02:38
Speaker
That's three meters tall.
00:02:42
Speaker
He had a bronze helmet on his head. and wore a coat of scale-armoured bronze, weighing 57 kilograms. On his legs he wore bronze greaves, and a bronze javelin was slung on his back.
00:02:58
Speaker
His spear shaft was like a weaver's rod, and its iron point weighed 7 kilograms. His shield-bearer went ahead of him.
00:03:11
Speaker
So wherever Goliath goes, the shield bearer is in front of him added protection.
00:03:18
Speaker
Goliath stood and shouts to the ranks of Israel, Why do you come out and line up for battle? Good question. Am I not a Philistine?
00:03:32
Speaker
and are you not servants of Saul?
David Arrives and Witnesses the Standoff
00:03:36
Speaker
Choose a man and have him come down to me. So basically, let's fight one-on-one. My champion versus your champion.
00:03:47
Speaker
And whoever wins become the monster race. And the losers become their slaves. Verse 11.
00:03:58
Speaker
On hearing the Philistine's words, Saul, who at this point is demon-possessed, And all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified, totally and utterly without hope.
00:04:12
Speaker
Their hearts just melted like wax or an ice cube turning to water. Their strength waned. Their hope turned to abject terror.
00:04:25
Speaker
Their faith to fear. Verse 12. Now David was the son of an Ephrathite, meaning someone who came from but tribe of Ephraim, named Jesse, who was from Bethlehem in Judah.
00:04:40
Speaker
Jesse had eight sons, and in Saul's time, he was very old. Jesse's three oldest sons, Eliab, Abinadab, and Shammah, had followed Saul to the war front.
00:04:58
Speaker
The next four were probably still the family farm, or doing whatever their job was, But David at this time was part time working on the family farm and part time going to Saul's palace to do deliverance ministry on him.
00:05:21
Speaker
He would bring his harp and prophetically worship. And as he worshiped, the demon tormenting Saul would flee. But because the king was unrepentant and wicked,
00:05:35
Speaker
It had an open door to keep on coming back and tormenting him again and again and again. Verse 16 says that the Philistine came forward morning and evening, every day for 40 days, for a month and a half.
00:05:56
Speaker
So this is basically on 80 occasions, the Philistine would just defy the nation of Israel, especially their army. and blaspheme the name of the Most High God. And what was God's people's response?
00:06:11
Speaker
To do nothing. In verse 17, Jesse basically tells David to go take some cheese sandwiches to his brothers, to take them bread rolls, and to give cheese to the commander of the unit.
00:06:26
Speaker
But verse 18 is very, very interesting. It alludes to my favorite protagonist in this story. which is Saul's propaganda minister. Because Jesse tells David to go to the battle lines and to take back assurance, spoils of war, evidence that the Israelites are winning because they're so busy fighting against the Philistines.
00:06:56
Speaker
That is categorically untrue. There was no fighting taking place. Goliath was screaming at them and blaspheming God.
00:07:09
Speaker
But God's people were doing squat all. They were sitting on their thumbs, acting the maggot, letting evil run amok, absolute and utter do-nothings.
00:07:24
Speaker
And somehow, in the little town of Bethlehem, Jesse seems to have gotten this notion that not only was a war taking place, but his country were winning the war.
00:07:40
Speaker
So obviously Saul had a propaganda team in operation lying to the people on the home front. Verse 20 says that early in the morning, David left the flock in the care of a shepherd.
00:07:53
Speaker
He cared very much for his sheep. He did not abandon them. Loaded up and set out as Jesse had directed. What his father said, The sun did.
00:08:05
Speaker
He reached the camp as the army was going up to its battle positions, shouting the war cry. These people were all talk. They would talk trash to each other, or rather talk smack to each other.
00:08:24
Speaker
I don't talk trash, I talk smack. They're totally different. Trash talk is all hypothetical, like, your mom is so fat she could eat the internet, but smack talk is happening, like, right now. Like, you're ugly and I know it for a fact, so I get the evidence right there.
00:08:38
Speaker
But actually, they had no intentions of doing anything. And you know, it's very, very frustrating, even today, when there are Christians who will speak against wicked governments.
00:08:53
Speaker
but they would never vote for a righteous politician.
00:08:57
Speaker
Or they would say, oh, this is an absolute disgrace. This is coming against the kids in our society. This is being filtered through the education system. But yet they wouldn't even think of sending an email to local councillors or politicians and say, this is an abomination.
00:09:14
Speaker
This is abhorrent. Stop. No. No. Some people get off on talking about problems and they pretend that they're actually interested in solving them.
00:09:26
Speaker
But they're not because they're cowards. They're okay to have conversations around their tables, in their kitchens, with their coffee and their cigarettes, but they would never even dream of stepping out and being involved in the culture war, in the fight for freedom.
00:09:43
Speaker
While all of this is going on David leaves his things with the Keeper. And next thing, Goliath comes onto battlefield, steps into the valley, and begins his daily morning routine telling Israel what an absolute joke of a country is, and how God is non-existent.
00:10:03
Speaker
And if he does exist, he's small, puny, and stupid, just like his people. And verse 25 says, Because when you are inactive, when you are passive, when you are apathetic, when you are lazy, when you have no interest in doing what is good and fighting for truth, there's always someone else to blame.
00:10:24
Speaker
do you see how this man keeps coming out? He comes out to defy Israel.
00:10:31
Speaker
Well, you know, shoot him with an arrow. Fight back. Do something.
00:10:39
Speaker
And then this is interesting. They say the king will give great wealth to the man who killed him. He will also give him his daughter in marriage. And I really like this part.
00:10:51
Speaker
Will exempt his family from paying taxes in Israel. And people of God said, amen. David asked the men standing near him, what will be done whoever killed this guy?
00:11:05
Speaker
You know, he needs to clean out his ears and just make sure he heard that correctly. Because not paying taxes is amazing. Hashtag taxation is theft.
00:11:16
Speaker
But also keep in mind, in the last chapter, Samuel came and anointed David to the king of Israel. And he said, you are going to be the next king.
00:11:30
Speaker
So I don't know about you, but if I were David in this situation, would be thinking... Okay, well, Saul has a daughter, Michal.
00:11:42
Speaker
and so david And David knew this, because he would go to do deliverance ministry on the king. He knew his family. So David is probably thinking, well, if i marry a princess, I'll be a prince of the realm.
00:12:07
Speaker
So, of course, I'd be a future king. I'd be in the the monarchy. I'd be in the royal line. That just makes perfect sense. That's what i would think. In verse 27, they confirm that he has heard correctly, and they tell him, well, yeah, listen, the winner going to be rich, free from taxes, basically you will not be poor.
00:12:28
Speaker
It's not like you win the Euro Millions and they take 70% of your winnings. You get rich, and you don't pay taxes. and you marry into Saul's family.
00:12:40
Speaker
A win-win-win. But before any of you can even think about tearing down the Goliaths in your life. First, there are a number of voices you need to tear down.
00:12:52
Speaker
And David knew that all well. Because this point, his older brother Eliab accosts him. Now this is the same Eliab that Samuel took one look at.
00:13:06
Speaker
And thought, wow, this guy's amazing. like He's so strong. he must be the new king. And God had said, rejected him. Because God looks the heart.
00:13:20
Speaker
Humans look at the exterior. God looks at the interior. Humans look at the flesh, the body, the muscle, the sinew, the athletics. God looks at your character.
00:13:32
Speaker
And God says, do not like what I see in him. will never be the king of this country. So Eliab walks up to David, and the first thing he says is the voice of isolation.
00:13:45
Speaker
Why have you come down here? What an asinine, stupid question.
David's Confidence and Decision
00:13:53
Speaker
Verse 22 tells us that when David arrived, he went to speak to his brothers.
00:14:00
Speaker
So Eliab already knows why David's there. He undoubtedly said, hey, Dad told me to come and give you some bread.
00:14:13
Speaker
Now got some breakfast, you got some lunch, you got some dinner. Dad wants to know how the war is going on. you glad you're alive? Can we see some evidence that, you know, you've killed some men? Elliot knows this.
00:14:31
Speaker
But why have you come down here? Who told you you were welcome in this place? Shut up and sit down. out of here.
00:14:41
Speaker
These are my friends. This is my territory. This is my network. This is my sphere of influence. You don't belong here. Then there's the voice of intimidation.
00:14:55
Speaker
With whom did you leave those few sheep that you're responsible for?
00:15:02
Speaker
Your ministry is so small. Maybe God never told you to set it up.
00:15:09
Speaker
Your circle of friends is really tiny. Oh, but you know, we're really, really close, we'd answer, well, nah, no one likes you. No one can stand you.
00:15:21
Speaker
We're superior, you're inferior, you're tiny, you're a midget, you're nothing. You're dirt beneath our shoes. You also must overcome the voice of character assassination.
00:15:37
Speaker
I know how conceited you are. How arrogant. How proud. How lofty. How haughty. You think you're so special, don't you?
00:15:50
Speaker
You think you're something amazing. Oh my gosh, like where did all this come from?
00:15:57
Speaker
This is Eliab's insecurity. This is what God saw when he looked at Eliab's heart it's one chapter earlier. And this insecurity that Eliab has, he's now projecting onto David.
00:16:14
Speaker
The arrogance Eliab has, because people who feel inferior will try to make themselves superior so that no one knows how insecure they really are. It's the very same thing that's afflicted Saul, that's happened to Saul all this time.
00:16:32
Speaker
now he's saying, I know exactly what you're like inside. You're filthy. You're so arrogant. And he's projecting all this on David like filth, like muck, because it's true for him.
00:16:45
Speaker
Then he calls David wicked. What's this? Vilification. If somebody wants to be the hero in their story, there needs to be a villain to take down.
00:16:58
Speaker
Look at the fairy tales. There is no dragon's lair without a dragon. There is no champion who overcame nothing.
00:17:10
Speaker
There has to be ah villain. You need an enemy in your story. And Eliab has chosen that David will be that enemy. So he creates this illusion, or delusion, version of David.
00:17:29
Speaker
And he needs to tear down David's. Because David is a stumbling block that can become a stepping stone to Eliab's most carnal desires.
00:17:40
Speaker
Then David must overcome the voice of misrepresentation. You just came here to watch the battle. You want to see the blood, the guts, and the gore.
00:17:52
Speaker
You want to see hearts get pulled their chests. You want to see blood spurting, Quentin Tarantino's style. You want to hear bones crack.
00:18:05
Speaker
That's why you're here. Again, let's forget the fact in verse 22, David literally said, hey, i'm here to bring you food. There you go. i He's being misrepresented. And Eliab knows he's lying.
00:18:21
Speaker
But in verse 29, oh, I love David's response. The fact that he says first, now what have I done? This shows that Eliab is a bully.
00:18:32
Speaker
This is not a one-off event. This has been happening repeatedly. No one says that for something that's happened once. Doesn't happen. David says, can't I even speak?
00:18:43
Speaker
Can't I even have a conversation? can I even talk to your boys? And then verse 30, he just turns his back on him. He's like, I'm not entertaining this nonsense.
00:18:57
Speaker
You do this all the time. Again and again again. You know you're lying. You're full of crap. I have no time your bull crap. No, we're not doing this.
00:19:08
Speaker
I'm not going there. I'm not wasting my breath. I'm not losing my peace over your stupidity. And he turns his back on him and walks away. There will be times so when you have to vindicate yourself from lies, from accusations, from untruths.
00:19:27
Speaker
But this, this is petty sibling rivalry bullying. And all Eliab is looking for is a fight, is a reaction.
00:19:39
Speaker
He cannot take down the giant himself. So instead, he's decided to settle for taking down the giant that he has created in his mind, that David is his enemy.
00:19:51
Speaker
In verse 32, says, david says Let no one lose any more sleep over this nonsense. Let nobody cower with this giant.
00:20:02
Speaker
Let no one lose heart or be dismayed. I'll kill him. And in verse 31, Saul, who knew David, because David was regularly doing deliverance ministry on him, said, What?
00:20:18
Speaker
Oh my goodness. Send that boy to me. Because if the Philistines heard that this snot-nosed kid was challenging them, this could go horribly for the whole nation of Israel.
00:20:34
Speaker
In verse 32, he needs to deal with the voice of Putnam. You're not able to do this.
00:20:44
Speaker
You're not capable ah stepping into the purposes and plans of God. You are unable this. to do anything meaningful. Have you seen where you're from?
00:20:57
Speaker
Have you seen your family? Have you measured yourself with a measuring tape recently?
00:21:06
Speaker
Do you remember your past indiscretions? And this is followed up with a voice of limitation. You're only ah young man, probably 14 years of age, for most historians.
00:21:23
Speaker
You're only from a small town, Ardy. You're only from the smallest county in all of Ireland.
00:21:32
Speaker
You're only and child. You're only baby Christian. You're only woman. It's different for all of us.
00:21:47
Speaker
And then we have the voice of competition. You are nothing. This guy has been a killer since he was youth.
00:22:03
Speaker
get two likes on average per Instagram post. he He works the algorithm incredibly well.
00:22:15
Speaker
You um part of a church family of fewer than 10 people. He is a pastor of a megachurch of 80,000. It doesn't matter what it is.
00:22:32
Speaker
Meant to minimize your efforts. Meant to demoralize you. Disenfranchise you.
00:22:42
Speaker
Convince you it's not even worth throwing your hat in the ring.
00:22:48
Speaker
But in verse 34 to 37, Look at David's CV.
00:22:56
Speaker
But David said to Saul, your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. So I can lead. i can rule. I can look after. I can protect. I can care for. I'm used to her work.
00:23:12
Speaker
When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from flock, I went after it. I struck it, and I rescued the sheep from its mouth.
00:23:26
Speaker
I am protector. I am brave and courageous. I am fearless. Nothing scares me. I will protect the last sheep of Israel in these days.
00:23:40
Speaker
Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear. This uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them. because he has defied the armies of the living God.
00:23:54
Speaker
The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.
David's Faith and the Battle
00:24:06
Speaker
What a resume. So David has already been on adventures with the Lord. He has seen God's goodness extended to him, God's hand of protection, and he knows that because God has helped in the past, God will help him in this instance.
00:24:25
Speaker
It's also important to recognize that when David called the Philistine uncircumcised, that is, yes, biological. is also picture of his morality.
00:24:39
Speaker
David is saying here, listen, I've been circumcised. There's been a snipping off. A snipping off lust. A cutting off of giving in to temptation.
00:24:52
Speaker
A cutting off of bad attitude. cutting off of unbelief. A snipping away of doubt. A cutting off of bad manners.
00:25:07
Speaker
A snipping away of speaking deception and having a mouthful of violence.
00:25:15
Speaker
But this guy, he's uncircumcised. He hasn't cut these things off. He's held on to them. he exhibits them. He lives for wickedness and evil.
00:25:29
Speaker
But there is a God, and he is the Lord of the harvest. Goliath has sown seeds death. And the Lord of the Harvest is going to make sure reaps what he has sown on himself.
00:25:45
Speaker
And fiery coals are about to rain down on his head.
00:25:51
Speaker
Since there genuinely is no better option and no contenders for the position of Israel's champion, Saul shrugs.
00:26:03
Speaker
Okay. And then he basically gives what becomes goodbye in the world of Star Wars a long time ago in a land far, far away.
00:26:16
Speaker
But not before and verse 38. Giving David another voice to contend with. The voice of manipulation.
00:26:29
Speaker
Saul was one head taller than the second tallest man in all of Israel. He was the giant in his kingdom, and he was the king. Yet he was cowering in his tent, shaking and terrified, afraid of doing anything, and therefore doing nothing, which is doing something.
00:26:51
Speaker
Indecision is making a decision. But here is young David, and David says, I'll deal with him. I'll tear him down. I'll put the world to right, don't you worry.
00:27:04
Speaker
So what does the coward do?
00:27:08
Speaker
He tries to change the way David walks.
00:27:12
Speaker
Style the way that David talks. Control his movement in a way that is a stricture. It's restrictive.
00:27:23
Speaker
It holds him back.
00:27:26
Speaker
Wear my tunic. Let's say David is four feet something. He's putting on the clothes of someone who's probably six feet, whatever.
00:27:39
Speaker
Put my helmet on your head. And scare his vision.
00:27:52
Speaker
And my weaponry. gene And David is very respectful. Because Saul's the king. And he tries to walk around. He tries to fight, tries to mobilize, tries to move.
00:28:07
Speaker
But in the end says, my king, thanks, but no thanks. I'm giving it a go. I've tried to do things the way you said, but I can't.
00:28:19
Speaker
It's not going to work. So in 39, he takes them off.
00:28:26
Speaker
And in verse 40, he walks to a stream. And he draws out five stones.
00:28:34
Speaker
He puts them in his shepherd's pouch. And he picks up his shepherd's staff. And off he goes.
00:28:43
Speaker
Can you manage without your stick? You are my stick. He doesn't go into battle looking like the immoral king. Looking like a coward.
00:28:55
Speaker
Talking someone else's talk. Walking someone else's walk. He goes in as himself. His garden of Eden self. The version of himself that God had called him to be.
00:29:10
Speaker
The version of himself that had taken down the lion and the bear. He doesn't need to play pretense. He doesn't need to play pretend. His testimonies were with this death.
00:29:26
Speaker
With that pouch. with a slingshot.
00:29:32
Speaker
And off he goes into battle. Some people would think, oh my goodness, what was going through his head? He must have been absolutely terrified. I disagree. and don't believe so.
00:29:44
Speaker
Instead, what I think was going through his head was a prophetic song, Psalm 23. The shepherd.
00:29:56
Speaker
is my shepherd Because David was a shepherd, but he had learned how to shepherd from the Lord. He had learned the character and the heart of a shepherd from God himself.
00:30:13
Speaker
I lack nothing. i have everything I need.
00:30:20
Speaker
He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside quiet waters. And where did David get the stones? From the stream.
00:30:32
Speaker
He refreshes my soul, and David's soul needed a refreshing after all the abuse he'd received from his brother.
00:30:40
Speaker
He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake. Again, Goliath has been blaspheming, God Almighty. Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
00:30:52
Speaker
Other versions say the valley of the shadow of death. And again, where is this battle taking place? The valley of Elah. The Israelites from this mountain, Philistines are on this.
00:31:05
Speaker
The battle takes place in the valley. That's where Goliath is. That's where Goliath is mocking the Israelites and the Lord.
00:31:15
Speaker
I'll fear no evil because God is with me. His rods and his staff, they comfort me. The same staff that is a weapon against animals, I'll use against this brute.
00:31:32
Speaker
The same staff that provides stability when he's feeling tired and dizzy and weary under the heat of the Middle Eastern sun, like a third leg.
00:31:49
Speaker
that will keep him upright. That will keep him strong. And for us, the staff of the cross, Jesus. The old rugged wooden cross Calvary is what we lift up to every challenge we face.
00:32:04
Speaker
We remind the enemy of what Jesus did for us. And we declare that we will have our victory over all the forces of the enemy. You prepare a table before me. You commune with me. You have intimacy with me in the presence of my enemies.
00:32:20
Speaker
And David's enemies behind him and in front of him. You anoint my head with oil. He's remembering when Samuel anointed him right there one chapter ago.
00:32:32
Speaker
My cup overflows. I wasn't blessed to be blessed. I was blessed to be a blessing.
00:32:42
Speaker
Surely your goodness and love, your mercy, your loving kindness will follow me all the days of my life. So it does not end in five minutes.
00:32:53
Speaker
I'm going to live for a good long time. And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever and ever. remember Amen. Amen and amen. May that be your heart's cry today.
00:33:05
Speaker
Back to 1 Samuel 17. Looking ahead to verses 55 to 56, so that it's in chronological order. I saw what David going out to meet the Philistine.
00:33:18
Speaker
He said to Abner, commander of the army. Abner, whose son is that young man? He didn't ask for his name. He knows his name is David. He's already spoken to David that day.
00:33:32
Speaker
And David does deliverance on him regularly.
00:33:38
Speaker
Abner replied, surely guess you love your majesty. I don't have a bold notion. Not a clue to have.
00:33:47
Speaker
And the king said, find out whose son ah young man is. What is Saul asking here? He wants to know the name of David's daddy.
00:34:02
Speaker
Because the most important and renowned person in the whole kingdom, other than Saul, was the prophet Samuel.
00:34:13
Speaker
And wherever Samuel went, there was a stir. People would wonder, oh my goodness, what's the prophet going to say? Is he going to bring good tidings? Is he going to give an encouraging word?
00:34:25
Speaker
it going to speak judgment? Is it going to share something horrifying or horrific, something that that's bad for the nation against our priest class, against our monarchy, against our army? What's going on?
00:34:39
Speaker
There would always be a stir. There would always be a buzz. So undoubtedly, even though Samuel was no longer visiting Saul, Saul was tracking his movements.
00:34:52
Speaker
Saul was still hearing wherever Samuel was going. And undoubtedly, Saul had heard that Samuel had recently gone to the little town of Bethlehem in Judah.
00:35:07
Speaker
And now Saul is watching this young man. He's 14 years of age. He's strong. he's like a warrior. He's brave. He's courageous.
00:35:21
Speaker
He's killing wild animals right, left and center. He's got a good character, got a good heart. He's popular with those he meets. Maybe not his family, but as outside of his family. And now, he just might take down a giant.
00:35:37
Speaker
The lead champion in the Arch Nemesis army.
00:35:44
Speaker
And you can just imagine Sol's mind going... Hmm. So Samuel went there, David, there.
00:35:54
Speaker
Was David there when Samuel went? um Did Samuel talk to the whole area or did he just talk to one person? And he's connecting all these dots and he's very, very close to figuring out that Samuel has prophesied over David already.
00:36:12
Speaker
Let's go backwards now verse 41.
00:36:16
Speaker
Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield-bearer in front of him, which is interesting because in almost all the artistic renderings you see this story, people tend to forget about the shield-bearer. This was not one-on-one, this was two-against-one.
00:36:33
Speaker
kept coming closer to David. He looked David over and saw that he was little more than a boy, glowing with health and handsome, And he despised him.
00:36:45
Speaker
So he looks at the ah rod and staff that David's holding. And he's like, am I a dog to you?
00:36:55
Speaker
You're treating me like and I'm an animal.
David's Victory and Aftermath
00:36:58
Speaker
Are you for serious? Are you having a laugh? You do realize this is a battlefield. Yeah, I'm here to kill you. We're not here to play fetch.
00:37:06
Speaker
And these are the next two voices you need to overcome before you can tear down your Goliath. The Philistine cursed him by his god Beelzebul, the lord of flies, the lord of filth.
00:37:20
Speaker
And my goodness, people are very contentedly filled their heads with crap today. His god Baal, the god of child sacrifice. Look at the problem in the Western world right now, because people are so busy murdering their children.
00:37:37
Speaker
Can you imagine the population issues? the West is likely to face, unless we get things back on track ridiculously quickly.
00:37:46
Speaker
The goddess Asherah, Arashtara, Tristar, who's the goddess of transgenderism. And isn't that the buzzword of the 2020s?
00:37:59
Speaker
And also the god Dagon, who's their god of evolution, for the Philistines believed that people had come out of the sea. This is the voice. of the enemy's reports.
00:38:12
Speaker
But you need to know that you know that you know that God's power to save you is more powerful than the enemy enemy's power to destroy you. That's the difference between fear and faith.
00:38:24
Speaker
And guys, next words are an invitation. um over here, little boy. Come, come, come, come, come. I'm going to kill you and I'm going to feed you to birds.
00:38:36
Speaker
Interesting, isn't it? Because David had just spoken to Saul about how he'd kill wild animals, and therefore he was unfazed about the giant.
00:38:48
Speaker
But it's interesting, you know, that demons whisper in your ear, they listen in, they monitor, then they whisper to each other, and they put words in people's mouths. And the very thing that David had very courageously boasted about recently, hey, with God's help, I've taken down all these things.
00:39:06
Speaker
And now he's being told they're going to eat you. What's this? It's the voice of premature death. You will not live to see your destiny. You will not live to see 18 years of age, 21 years old, years old.
00:39:24
Speaker
Your next birthday. But look at David's response in verse 45. Oh my goodness. David said to the Philistine, you come against me with sword and spear and javelin.
00:39:38
Speaker
But I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the Lord of hosts, the Lord of the angel armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands and I'll strike you down. And just for good measure, big G,
00:40:00
Speaker
I'm going to cut your head off too. Capisce?
00:40:05
Speaker
This very day, I'll give the carcasses of your army to the same creatures that you just declared will be eating me. i don't accept your abuse.
00:40:17
Speaker
I don't accept your word curse. I bind it in the name of Jesus, so and I declare it be loosed upon you instead. ah self-fulfilling prophecy. And the whole world will know there's a God in Israel.
00:40:33
Speaker
Verse 47. All those gathered here will know that it's not a sword or a spear that the Lord saves. It's not by might.
00:40:43
Speaker
It's not by power. But by your spirit, says the Lord. For the battle is the Lord's. And he will give all you into our hands.
00:40:56
Speaker
Isn't this an interesting one? All those gathered here will know that there's a God in Israel. Think of what David has just said here. I'm going to cut off your head, I'm going to kill him, and him, and him, and him, and him, and him, and all the thousands.
00:41:16
Speaker
And everyone will know, well, who is everyone? If David and the Israelites successfully wipe out the Philistine army, who's going to know?
00:41:28
Speaker
The Israelites. Because while David is walking onto his battlefield, you can just imagine the groans, the moans, the doubt, the unbelief, the, oh my goodness, the king has lost his mind This is nuts. We are going to be enslaved.
00:41:46
Speaker
Oh, I should have just run away to the mountains with my wife and children. This is a joke. You can imagine the unbelief. that his own team had towards him. You can imagine the abuse that they were shouting at him, the slurs they were giving him, the face-palming, without the shadow doubt.
00:42:07
Speaker
And also, even without all of that, for a month and a half, all they've done is stand back there and do nothing, while this Philistine defied God and mocked them.
00:42:21
Speaker
Because they didn't have faith in God. They may have had head knowledge, They may have had religious prayers that they would rhyme off without even thinking about it. They may have gone to the tabernacle few times a year.
00:42:36
Speaker
They may have engaged in certain religious practices. But was there actual legitimate faith to be found among them? Not at chance. But David is saying, that unbelief ends today, ends with me.
00:42:51
Speaker
Verse 48. Have the Philistine moved closer to attack him? David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him, reaching into his bag and taking out a stone.
00:43:06
Speaker
He slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead and he fell face down on the ground. So David the triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and stone.
00:43:23
Speaker
Without a sword in his hand, he struck down the Philistine and he killed him.
00:43:33
Speaker
David ran over, I love this next part, he picks up the sword of Goliath and chops his head off.
00:43:46
Speaker
And the Philistines are an absolute utter unbelief. They're shot. And they flee.
00:43:57
Speaker
They scatter from the battlefield. Because their giant, their leader, their head, has been lopped off. Now you would imagine that people would start applauding David.
00:44:12
Speaker
You'd imagine they might just give him a big check there and then for one million euros. But no. Verse 57 tells us as soon as this happened,
00:44:23
Speaker
Abner takes David to one side and says, who is your father, young man? and David says, my father is Jesse of Bethlehem.
00:44:39
Speaker
Two things are happening here. One, with all the names that David's been called thus far, all the wicked prophecies spoken over him, all the words of death,
00:44:53
Speaker
The character assassinations, the slurs, people running his name and reputation into the mud. Isn't it interesting that the one time David actually gets to speak about himself, he says, I am the son of Jesse of Bethlehem.
00:45:10
Speaker
I am the son. Perhaps the reason that you keep on falling, pray to the enemy's wild and tricks and tactics, character assassinations,
00:45:25
Speaker
campaigns against you is because you do not know you're a son or daughter of God. But when you know your identity, when you know the sonship that you have, or the daughtership, you've been adopted into his family by the blood of Jesus.
00:45:42
Speaker
Oh my goodness, it changes everything. Because suddenly, when people say you're nothing, you're like, I'm a prince of the world of heaven.
00:45:55
Speaker
When someone says, you're a mistake, you can say, actually, I'm a citizen of heaven.
00:46:05
Speaker
When someone says, you're a thing, you can say, well, actually, I'm blessed by how you favoured. But it can also be read another way, which is less optimistic, less positive.
00:46:21
Speaker
And Abner will go to Saul. He'll relay that David is Jesse Bethlehem's son.
00:46:33
Speaker
And Saul, when he hears this, is going to either connect the dots straight away or by talking to people and finding out what's on the grapevine, find out that Jesse is indeed the one whose house Samuel went to.
00:46:55
Speaker
And he is going to know that Samuel has had private correspondence with David. And this will set to notion events, ischism, animosity that will determine the rest of the book of 1 Samuel.
00:47:13
Speaker
or this But while this conversation has taken place, let's see what the army was getting up to. 1 Samuel 17, 52 53. fifty two fifty three tells us that the men charged at long last took them long enough after the Philistines.
00:47:35
Speaker
And they chased them all the way back to their city-state of Gath and Ekron, packing off their legs, their arms, their heads, putting them in halves and quarters have they ran along.
00:47:50
Speaker
And David has the most beautiful prophetic song about this in Psalm 9.
00:47:57
Speaker
I'll give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart. I'll tell of your wonderful deeds. I'll be glad and rejoice in you. i will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.
00:48:10
Speaker
My enemies turn back. They stumble and perish before you. For you have upheld my rights and my cause, sitting enthroned a righteous judge.
00:48:24
Speaker
Because the Lord was sitting enthroned between the cherubim on the mercy seat. It was basically like teleporter that Jesus used the Old Testament.
00:48:38
Speaker
For you have rebuked the nations and destroyed the wicked. You have blotted out their name forever and ever.
00:48:45
Speaker
Endless ruin has overtaken my enemies. You have uprooted their cities. Even the memory of them has perished. The Lord reigns forever. He's established his throne for judgment.
00:48:59
Speaker
He rules the world in righteousness and judges the people with equity. The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.
00:49:16
Speaker
Sing the praises of the Lord enthroned in Zion. Proclaim among the nations what he has done. For he who avenges blood remembers.
00:49:28
Speaker
He does not ignore the cries of the afflicted. Lord, see how my enemies persecute me. Have mercy and lift me up from the gates of death, that I may declare your praises in the gates of daughter Zion, and there rejoice in your salvation.
00:49:49
Speaker
The nations have fallen into the pits they have dug. Their feet are caught in the net they have hidden. The Lord is known by his acts of justice.
00:50:00
Speaker
The wicked are ensnared by the work of their hands. The wicked go down to the realm of the dead. All the nations that forget God. But God will never forget the needy.
00:50:13
Speaker
The hope of the afflicted will never perish. Arise, Lord. lower Do not let mortals triumph. Let the nations be judged in your presence. Strike them a terror, Lord.
00:50:26
Speaker
Let the nations know that they're only mortal.
00:50:31
Speaker
And the story ends in 1 Samuel 17, verse 54. verse fifty four So not only does David take the weapons of his fallen enemy, but he also takes his head back to Jerusalem.
00:50:47
Speaker
Think of it as a 14 year old's trophy for a job well done.
00:50:54
Speaker
this story is absolutely iconic. It's the little guy taking on the giant because he knows who God is. He knows God is for him.
00:51:06
Speaker
knows God is with him. He does not get hung up on stupid arguments. He does not get hung up on people saying things about him, but he knows they're not true.
00:51:17
Speaker
People trying to make things stick to him. He's like, nope, not going there, not having it. I'm not giving you an inch.
Conclusion and Future Insights
00:51:24
Speaker
And instead, he focuses on what's actually important, the words and the will of God for his life.
00:51:33
Speaker
And what happens? The enemies of God of Israel stumble and fall. And he charges towards destiny and gets one step closer to fulfilling the purpose for which God sent him to the earth, which is to be the greatest thing this world has ever had and will ever have short of Jesus Christ.
