Today we're continuing our study on David's life... and then comparing it to a story that Jesus retold incorrectly.  Is our Saviour and Lord fallible, after all? Or is there more going on than meets the eye?!!!

Introduction and Context

00:00:00
Speaker
Hello there everybody. Thank you so much for joining this teaching today on YouTube, or indeed on any other platform where videos are hosted.
00:00:13
Speaker
ah My name is Brendan Thomas Marritt and today we are going to have a look at a very dramatic story in 1 Samuel 22. And then we're going to ask a question.
00:00:26
Speaker
Does Jesus know the Old Testament all that well? Or is he theologically illiterate? Because he says something in the book of Mark, which is very, very strange, and some people might think, actually, he's an error, theologically.
00:00:46
Speaker
So, ah let's get into it.

David's Escape and Saul's Rage

00:00:51
Speaker
Alright, so in 1 Samuel 22, this took place, some historians suggest, in about 10 years.
00:00:59
Speaker
11 at which point David is in and 29 years of age. Some would push it back a year and be 10, 12 BC.
00:01:11
Speaker
um And in this story, David has been on the run for quite a while. Now, he has visits to the house of Ahimelech, who is the priest, and Ahimelech gave him the sword of a eliyath and there indeed was no sword quite like it. It was a one-of-a-kind, it was original.
00:01:30
Speaker
And David ran off with the sword. But Saul, the evil king was thirsty for David's blood, was hot on his trail.
00:01:42
Speaker
So let's start off with verse 11. It says, King Saul immediately sent for Ahimelech and all his family, who served as priests at Nob. When they arrived, Saul shouted at him.
00:01:56
Speaker
"'Listen to me, you son of Ahitob!' "'What is it, my king?' Ahimelech asked, genuinely not having a bold notion what's going on here.
00:02:09
Speaker
"'Why have you and the son of Jesse, David, conspired against me?' Saul demanded. "'Why did you give him food and a sword?' Why have you consulted God for him?
00:02:24
Speaker
Why have you encouraged him to kill me as he is trying to do to this very day? This guy is a chronic liar. I mean, he's the one who's trying to kill David, okay? This is the voice of projection through and through.
00:02:40
Speaker
But sir, Emilek replied, is anyone among all your servants as faithful as David? Your son-in-law? Because remember,
00:02:51
Speaker
David was supposed to become the king's son-in-law after he killed Goliath. That did not happen.

Saul's Accusation and Massacre

00:02:58
Speaker
And then Saul tried to marry him off to Merab the princess. That did not happen.
00:03:04
Speaker
And then after lots of tooting and fro-weighing and, hey, you will you say this and i pass this message on and kill 100 Philistines and bring back four skins, oh my goodness, and 10 to 200, he finally married Macal. Saul went into a lot of work.
00:03:19
Speaker
Went lot of work. to get David and his family tree. So, know that's probably really, really confused. Why, he's the captain of the bodyguard, and a highly honored member of your household.
00:03:35
Speaker
This was certainly not the first time I'd consulted God for him. May the king not accuse me and my family in this matter, for I knew nothing at all of any plot against you.
00:03:47
Speaker
ah this point, he might actually be thinking, wait, is David evil? But he doesn't know. He's just really, really confused.com.
00:03:59
Speaker
Very bewildered, very perplexed. Does not have a bull's notion what the king is talking about. You will surely die, Ahimelech, along with your entire family, the king shouted.
00:04:14
Speaker
And he ordered his bodyguards. Kill these priests of the Lord, for they are allies and conspirators with David. They knew he was running away from me, but they didn't tell me.
00:04:31
Speaker
But Saul's men refused to kill the priests. Killing a shepherd boy? fine Killing a worship leader? Fine.
00:04:42
Speaker
Killing a bodyguard? Fine. Killing a commander in the army? fine Killing someone with the anointing God? Fine. Killing someone with deliverance ministry? Fine. They're all examples and descriptions of David, by the way.
00:04:56
Speaker
For the priests, was a no-go. They were probably afraid of being cursed by God or having some heavenly retaliation.

Historical Enmity and Prophecy

00:05:05
Speaker
Then the king said to Doeg. Doeg was an Edomite. He wasn't an Israelite. He was an Edomite. who was a descendant of Esau all way back in Genesis.
00:05:16
Speaker
And the Edomites despised the Israelites. You've got Esau, who hated his brother Jacob, his twin brother. You had the Edomites who would not let the Jews through their land as shortcut after they escaped the land of Egypt.
00:05:37
Speaker
You had Edomites who would later tear tear while the Emperor of Babylon burned God's temple to the ground. Burn it to the ground! Burn it to the ground! And they grabbed Israeli babies and the Babylonians were smashing them against the rocks. The Edomites were like, yeah, go on and get in there, it's our Dijos.
00:05:57
Speaker
Herod, the not-so-great, was an Edomite. As you can see, I'm recording this at Christmas time. It's officially the 1st of December. um And King Herod...
00:06:08
Speaker
The reason he wanted to kill the baby Jesus isn't because he actually thought, oh no, this little baby and the crib is going to grow up and be so powerful as to take me down. No, it's because he knew the ancient scriptures, the prophecies, that an Israeli king would be the king of geographical and national Israel.
00:06:37
Speaker
And he was afraid that if this Jesus was indeed that king, well then his time would be over. His time as an Edomite king. The Edomites had waited a long time to get the nation of Israel.
00:06:50
Speaker
And they were about to see it slip through their fingers because that baby was born. This was a a national racial hysteria that led him to to kill those kids.
00:07:02
Speaker
And he did kill many.
00:07:07
Speaker
So verse 18, then the king said to Doeg, you do it. eyes I said, 18, it is indeed 18, yes. I shouldn't have taken off my glasses.
00:07:18
Speaker
So Doeg the Edomite turned on them and killed them that day. 85 priests and all, imagine he just murdered 85 people, didn't even give a toss. Still wearing their priestly garments.
00:07:32
Speaker
Then he went to Nob, the town the priests, and killed the priest's families. men and women, children and babies, and all the cattle, donkeys, sheep and goats.
00:07:45
Speaker
Only Abiathar, one the sons of Ahimelech, escaped and fled to David. And 1 Samuel 23, 6 tells us that he took the high priest's ephod as he was fleeing.

Jesus, David, and the Sabbath

00:08:06
Speaker
But let's bring Jesus into this. Turn down your Bibles to Mark, chapter 2, 23 to 28. we're fast forwarding 140, sorry, by 1,040 years or so.
00:08:25
Speaker
We're now looking in and around 28 AD on some historians.
00:08:31
Speaker
And this is a discussion about the Sabbath. So in these days of Mark 2, Jesus is on the earth. He's got his 12 disciples. And they're just walking around, casting out demons, opening the eyes the blind, opening the ears of the deaf, giving language to mute tongues, um healing the sick, looking after people, showing the love of the Father, i declaring the kingdom of God was an eye. That's not the world of heaven. it's
00:09:05
Speaker
If you want a heavenly kingdom on earth, it's available to you, starting in the nation of Israel and outworking its way beyond. lot of people were receptive to it.
00:09:18
Speaker
Most people weren't.
00:09:21
Speaker
Starting with verse 23. One Sabbath day, it's a Saturday, as Jesus is walking through some grain fields, his disciples began breaking off heads of grain to eat.
00:09:34
Speaker
But the Pharisees said to Jesus, look, Pharisees are the religious teachers, and by religious, they're actually irreligious. They have a religious spirit. They've got demons in them, but they absolutely despise the people.
00:09:52
Speaker
They twist the word of God, they add to it to give themselves more power over the people and to make life as difficult for the people as possible. Why do people tolerate them? One, out of fear.
00:10:07
Speaker
One, because people do seem to love falling into bondage, and religious bondage is a big one. And also, they had a mutual enemy, the Roman Empire. They would speak badly about the Romans, and people were like, well, you know, our enemies, enemies are friends, so, know, whatever.
00:10:29
Speaker
But the Pharisees said to Jesus, look, why are they breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath? I'm going to be honest with you, i don't know if I don't know if I'd call that harvesting. For those of you who are not watching this but are listening, that was me mimicking, plucking head of grain and popping in my mouth.
00:10:51
Speaker
I would not call that harvesting, just being honest with you. I mean, that's like if they had put a fork to their mouths and, you know, eaten a bit of chicken. Or put a putt of spoon to their mouths and had some Weedabix.
00:11:05
Speaker
Or bran flakes. Is it really all that different? You know?
00:11:12
Speaker
Jesus said to them, Haven't you ever read in the scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He went into the house of God. During the days when Abiathar was high priest and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread, the Lord the priest relied to eat.
00:11:31
Speaker
He also gave some to his companions. Then Jesus said to them, the Sabbath was made to meet the needs of the people and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.
00:11:43
Speaker
So the Son of Man is Lord even over the Sabbath. You know, Jesus was the one who had created the Sabbath. And these guys were basically trying to tell him that they knew more i about God's word than the word of God, Jesus himself, which is ludicrous.
00:12:05
Speaker
So effectively what Jesus is saying is, David and his men were hungry, and it was inappropriate, it was, for them to eat the high priest's bread that was reserved for the priests, were for for the workers, the servants of God.
00:12:24
Speaker
That was to keep them alive. You know, it was their dinner. But they broke convention. They broke the rules because this guy was starving. They did something that was wrong on the surface, but for a greater goal.
00:12:41
Speaker
They broke a rule to save a life.

Modern Hypocrisy

00:12:48
Speaker
And Pharisees are trying to turn... such a small, simple master is putting some grain in your mouth into something abomin abominable and then wicked, and Jesus saying, well, it's fine. They did it for the preservation of life.
00:13:02
Speaker
I mean, the Pharisees, if one of their animals had fallen into a river, would have had no problem pulling it out.
00:13:10
Speaker
But they a problem with the preservation of human life. Isn't that the same thing that's happening today? We've got people who would chain themselves to trees. Don't get down the trees!
00:13:25
Speaker
But aborting babies is fine. Because it's about grandstanding. It's all about putting yourself forward. Pushing yourself forward. Trying to make yourself feel good. Trying to make yourself look impressive. It's all virtue signaling.
00:13:45
Speaker
To the the masses. to the plebs.
00:13:49
Speaker
We've people who say, we know, we need to protect the environment. But they absolutely loathe the people who populate the environment.
00:14:01
Speaker
We've people who say, we need to destroy that industry and ban that industry and those people should be poor and those people should put out of business. Because there's an existential threat.
00:14:16
Speaker
ah car An oncoming ice age. then global warming, and then global boiling, and... It's always changing, we just said climate change. So no matter what happens, sunshine in the morning, rain in the afternoon, aha, we told you, we told you the climate was changing!
00:14:34
Speaker
Your taxes, though, they can change the weather.
00:14:38
Speaker
Not sure what weather they want, but apparently.
00:14:45
Speaker
But yet, these people would... subscribed to the idea that we need to start eating babies. I believe it was a Swedish psychologist who threw out that idea.
00:14:59
Speaker
And a lot of very scared and deranged individuals thought it sounded pleasing to their ears.
00:15:10
Speaker
They're Pharisees. They've got a religious spirit. They're so full of themselves. So full of crap But they despise people. They think they're the ones with the keys to fix all the problems of the human race.
00:15:25
Speaker
But the problem's always a human. And the problem's never them. It's always someone else.

Jesus' Divinity and Priesthood

00:15:36
Speaker
I did not intend to say that, but that's the 21st century relevance. But Jesus says, no, no I created the Sabbath to be a blessing to people. I gave it to people who had been slaves for centuries because I did not want them to find their identity in work.
00:15:54
Speaker
I wanted them to find their identity in God. So I gave them the Sabbath so they could spend time with the Father and with their families, with community.
00:16:08
Speaker
I gave it to them for structure and you have turned it into stricture.
00:16:16
Speaker
I gave it to them as a rope of hope, but you have turned it into a noose.
00:16:25
Speaker
A chokehold.
00:16:29
Speaker
But blink and you miss it. There's one very interesting thing Jesus says. It sounds like he doesn't know his Old Testament very well.
00:16:39
Speaker
In verse 26, he refers to Abiathar as the high priest. But when you read 2 Samuel,
00:16:51
Speaker
Abiathar is not the high priest. It says Ahimelech is the high priest, and chapter 22 ends with Abiathar as the lone survivor running off to David with the ephod, and then he becomes David's high priest retroactively.
00:17:09
Speaker
So what's Jesus doing here?
00:17:12
Speaker
He's equating the son with the father. He's identifying the son with the father.
00:17:24
Speaker
The Pharisees may have heard that, we don't know, but may have heard that and said, ha, false teacher, hey rabbi, okay. All right, son of Mary, okay. But no.
00:17:38
Speaker
What Jesus is actually doing here is he's likening himself to father God. He's saying that Abiathar was the high priest. One Ahimelech with my priest, two in one.
00:17:51
Speaker
And he's saying, i um one of the Father. How could he do that? did he make that claim? Because in the Old Testament, Jesus has many names, and one of them is Melchizedek,
00:18:06
Speaker
the king of Salem, which is the king of Shalom, the king of peace. I think of the Christmas song. Wonderful, Counselor, Almighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Hello.
00:18:25
Speaker
But Melchizedek, King of Salem, is also the King of Jerusalem. And Jesus, of course, came to bring in the King of God to be the actual King of Jerusalem.
00:18:37
Speaker
But we're also told the of Hebrews that Melchizedek is the High Priest of Father God in heaven. So Jesus, on one hand, is the Lord of all. He's also the king of heaven and earth.
00:18:52
Speaker
But he's also a high priest unto his father.
00:18:58
Speaker
So in that way, jesus is the saying, Abiathar was a priest. His father was high priest. And therefore, Abiathar was high priest. He had identification with the father.
00:19:14
Speaker
And then, Jesus' case, he's saying, I am one of the Father, and I'm the high priest unto my Father.
00:19:26
Speaker
All right, so hopefully you gleaned something there you had not known

Conclusion and Reflection

00:19:29
Speaker
before. i just found that interesting. Hopefully it landed. If you listened to that and just said, so, I appreciate you hanging out and listening to what I had to say.
00:19:41
Speaker
I thought it was interesting. hope you did too. Drop a comment in the box below let me know your thoughts and any other similarities um that you can find in David's story um that connect with the story of Jesus, with the identity of Jesus, with pictures of Jesus. And have a super special, awesome, wonderful day. And I'll see you in the next video, which is posted tomorrow.
00:20:12
Speaker
Peace out.
