It's because i wanted to do it as chronologically as possible. So even though the Book of Job is in the middle of the Old Testament, the story of Job actually happens somewhere between days of Noah and the days of Moses.

So and the big question about Job is when did it happen? Because as far as Bible stories go, the book of Job is very much in a league of its own.

Very original. He truly is one of a kind. Now, in Job, chapter 22, verses 15 to 16, they actually talk about the great flood from last week's episode, washing away the Nephilim.

And it says, Will you keep to the old way that wicked men have trod? They were snatched away before their time. Their foundation was washed away, poured out as a river,

by a flood. So the Great Flood was still very much in people's cultural memory. It was still very much a time when people were like, well, we know what happened.

Even if you read Job, there are references, you know, to ah snowy mountains and and and lots of ice. So the impact of the Great Flood was probably still very evident.

Also, in Job chapters 1, in chapter 42, verse 8, it talks about Job performing animal sacrifices, burning animals.

It's a way of making atonement for himself and for his children. So saying, just in case we've sinned, or I know that we've sinned,

In the days before Moses, Moses brought the law the Lord's to the people of Israel. It's kind of burning the animals and for the forgiveness of you and your family.

Also, his wealth was measured in how much livestock he had. And that was very, very common in the days of the patriarchs.

We're also given a clue in Job 42, 15. The women will be happy with this one, where Job had seven sons and three daughters in the second half of his life.

And actually all of them got an inheritance. From the days of Moses, it was more common to be the firstborn male. Probably a picture, really, of Jesus being the firstborn son of God and inheriting everything from God.

But in the days of Job, he made sure that all of his kids were equally wealthy after he died.

Also with his lifespans. When the story of Job happened, he was 140. When the story of Job ends, he's 280.

if you look before the flood, people were living into their 900s as a matter, of course. i mean, it's no wonder that they were performing the wicked evil that they were. Look at how long they lived.

Think about evil people can be In our time, and they might only live for 70, 80 years, 50 or 60 of those as adults, but imagine in their time living for almost a millennium, it makes, it's no surprise that they made the most phenomenal architectural buildings, that they had technology that it was so incredibly superior and phenomenal, and that

Their propensity for great wickedness was so vast. After the flood, people's lifespan dropped very, very steeply, very, very quickly.

But that's also a clue for us that Job's story happened somewhere between great flood ending and the life of Moses, who we'll be looking at in just a few short weeks.
Character and Integrity of Job

Now, what is though impressive of Job? Well, in Job chapter one, verse one, he is described as blameless, upright, fearing God and turning away from evil.

Four excellent qualities. So to say that he was blameless does not mean sinless. okay The guy had lived for 140 years. Obviously, he had made his fair share of mistakes.

you know None of us have lived anywhere near 140 years. Think of all the times you've messed up. So he wasn't sinless, but he was blameless.

That means he was in a right relationship with the Lord. And when the Lord has forgiven you, he remembers your sins no more.

He was upright. He was a man of integrity. If he f I love the Lord, when you looked at him, he lived like someone who loved the Lord.

he said, a family man, I love my family, when you looked at his life, the evidence was very, very abundantly clear that he loved his family. He loved his community.

had a high position, and he did it without. And maybe looking after people's hearts. And taking care of those under his care.

He was a good steward of the resources God had given him. We're told that he feared God. That means he had a reverential fear, a respect of the Lord.

That he knew, okay, the Lord is up here and I'm with you down here. And he lived like it. He did not live but like he was good at him.

and turning away from evil. You know, some Christians try to avoid using words like evil or thin. Instead, they kind of water it down.

No one ever does evil or thin. They just make mistakes. They just had a bad day. Just had a slippage. But actually, God hates evil.

And we are commanded in the word in the New Testament to hate evil, to resist evil, and to expose evil. And in Genesis, we see in life Joseph, if you're tempted to do evil, you run away from it.

You flee from it. You don't stand there, pray for 30 minutes and have a conversation. You run. You get the heck out of Dodge. Because temptation is tailor-made for you as an individual.

But he hated evil. He turned his back on the darkness. So did he still sin every once in a while? Yeah. But daily he would offer animal sacrifices, a print animal sacrifice on his behalf and on behalf of his children. he had led them in the ways of the Lord.

But just in case they had said anything, thought if anything or done anything, displeasing to the Lord's. They would sacrifice these animals. a And as a picture saying, Lord, our sin is now burnt, burnt away. It's been dealt with.

Where Job is such an interesting book.
Satan's Role and Heavenly Court Drama

is it starts off by telling us little bits about the man, enough for us to like him. Then the story changes to the court of heaven, where the Lord is sitting on his throne, and he summons the sons of God, angelic beings, before him, before his throne.

I don't know if you could put a number There were many angels ludded into heaven before him in that moment.

But they were not just the good ones. Satan decided to crash the party, and he was in attendance as well. Now, as the story of Job progresses, you realize Job at this point actually doesn't really know mean anything about the devil.

He has incredibly, he might know that there are evil spirits, maybe, but he has no real understanding of the nature ofs spiritual warfare. But Satan is in his midst.

The Lord, and we know it's Jesus, because John 1.18 says no one had ever seen God the Father except the Son up that point.

So here we're talking about Jesus on the throne. And Jesus looks at him and says, where have you been? What have you been doing?

Where have you come from?

Think of, you know, if our parents on the call, maybe you tell your children, OK, dinner is at five o'clock. I need to back home at 430. Go play with your friends. Be here at 430.

And then your children just kind of walk in like, you know, 6 p.m. All cockily. And you're like, excusez moi? Do you have a watch?

You just didn't allow me your phone? What time to call this? I said, where's Hershey? Where have you been? And your kids go around.

With my friends. Whatever. Place to place. That's how Satan speaks back to Jesus. He just says, Been here and there. Been to and fro.

Going back and forth. Now I can tell you exactly where he was. but but The Bible tells us in John 10 10 that he comes to steal, kill and destroy. First Peter 5 8 tells us that he runs all around the world looking for people to devour in the manner of a lion.

In Genesis chapter 3, we're told that man was made from the dust and Satan would spend his life devouring the dust, devouring humans.

So basically, he's just been running around the earth killing people. That's what he's been doing.

maybe we're bit comfortable knowing there's a devil but not knowing too much about him. I've been in churches where you're actually discouraged from knowing too much about angels and demons, in case you got into theology.

But I see it. Biblical. God wants you to know it. So let's look at a little bit of what Satan had been getting up to while just going around to and fro.

In John 10.10, which was originally written in Greek,

We're told the enemy, the thief, the devil, comes to steal. In Greek, that means to filch, to steal secretly and with stealth, to commit a theft.

We're told he comes to steal, to kill. To kill means to offer as a spiritual sacrifice by fire. burn you.

Have ever heard someone say, oh, I've just been so burned by life? Spiritual warfare, demonic. It means to butcher. We had that last week where Cain butchered Abel.

And Lamech butchered the young man.

it means to give up to destruction. To immolate, to slaughter, to slay.

We're told in John 10.10, he comes to steal, to kill, to destroy. to destroy in the Greek means to mar. To utterly perish. To bring about the death.

To cut off entirely. To permanently, absolutely destroy. cancel out. To remove.

who ruin. ruin. into cause to be lost by experiencing a miserable wound. That is what the devil does to human beings every single day.

Matthew 10, 25 describes him as, Some translate the Beelzebub, the Lord of Flies Dung and Feces like crap. Because that is what sin smells like.

Take my word for it. I've smelled it twice. it can also be translated Beelzebul. Beelzebul is a name for the devil. It means the Lord.

Not as in the Lord God, but the Lord or the master of a courtroom. a magistrate in judicial proceedings. Sometimes you might hear people say, but the enemy has a legal right to attack you. That's what this means.

He knows the law. He hates the Bible. But he knows it word for word.

And if people are tiptoeing with the darkness, complicit with the darkness,

entertaining or carrying the darkness, the enemy says, we've got something in common, and so I have a right to attack you.

It doesn't mean every time something goes bad in your life, the devil had a foothold. He's an evil enemy. He fights dirtily.

But we shouldn't make it easy for him. And if you do have something in common with the darkness, It means you're vulnerable to the Demarcus.

And last Bible verse before we move on from Satan. Revelation chapter 12, verse 9. It gives four names for Satan. We had four good names or descriptions of Job. now we've got the four bad ones of the devil.

One is the great dragon.

That means he's a fabulous serpent. He's the seeing one, the seer. He had a prophetic gift when he was an angel.

To have incredible insight. To spot his prey. That's human beings. And to indirectly persuade pagan governments.

And in case you think paganism always looks like, you know, drumming around a campfire like a very governed Western world, with very few exceptions, is a pagan government.

To indirectly persuade pagan governments to accomplish his agenda as he works from behind the scenes.

He is called the ancient serpent in Revelation 12 and 9 as well. This means a primeval serpent. You kind of get, you know, Genesis chapter three vibes.

He's also called the devil. People sometimes get so familiar with these words, and they don't actually know what they mean. The devil means a false accuser.

Malicious gossip. When I was a teenager, I loved gossip. it was so much fun. When you begin to realize gossip is speaking the devil's native tongue, you're going to have reassess.

To unjustly criticize or hurt. There are times to criticize. There are times to tell people to up their game and uphold the standard. Being critical just to damage people, to make them feel inferior, make yourself superior. That's the devil's speech.

To malign. To condemn, to sever relationships. A backbiter. Hello. Hello. And to make charges that bring people down.

Think of, you know, if you've ever known someone who was hauled into a court case and you knew that they were innocent. That's what the devil does.

And Revelation 12, 9 gives him a fourth name. The great dragon, ancient serpent, the devil and Satan. That means the adversary, the accuser.

So in the presence of Jesus and all those angels that he summoned, the devil just... So then, if you've ever been under the impression that the devil is trapped in hell, that theological nonsense.
Job's Trials and Suffering

Totally and utterly biblically confounded. He can still enter the world of heaven. When you go to heaven, you're not going to see him walking down the streets, okay? You'll be fine. There are There might be like one room in heaven he still goes into.

courtroom. But he still has access to the sky. He still has wings. That idea of, o God clips the devil's wings. I don't know where that came from, but it's not biblically accurate.

But he's been running around just killing people, causing destruction, destroying lives. Jesus just as you considered...

My servant, Job. Isn't he brilliant? Isn't he great? Jesus just talked up one of his kids.

Satan, because he is a gossip and a backbiter and a defamer and he maliciously twists everything like a snake, coiling and twisting, changing.

He does not have a good opinion about anybody. He chooses to see the worst in everybody. And he says, ah, he only loves you because, you know, you've made him so rich. Because he's so blessed materially.

But strip all that away. You'd see what he's really like. He'd curse you. But integrity he's known for, it wouldn't last.

And so, he afflicted Job. Satanic spiritual warfare. Job versus the original OG big bad.

And in one day, Satan slaughtered Job's ten children. His livestock obliterated.

And really began to poison his marriage. Or even his wife was like, for goodness sakes, would you not just curse God already and hurry up and die?

You live in an absolute misery here. Just curse God so God will strike you with a lightning bolt. And he came back for seconds and he inflicted Job with sores and boils on head to toe.

That he just sat on a pile of dirt. Outside, mourning that everything he'd built had been lost. Everything he'd been blessed with had been taken from him.

I began to get a bit of broken pottery and that's quite close to self-harming, the way the Bible describes it. Just to try to itch, scratch the boils and find some degree of relief.

me Job cursed the day of his birth. They say, God, it would be better if I had never been born, if I if i didn't live, just felt into total, abject depression.

But in Job's, in the midst of Job's misery, some of his friends came along, three friends, and then some random guy who wasn't his friend, but came along anyway. And...

They came to comfort him, but for the first week, they couldn't speak. They just sat there looking at him in his misery. And when they finally did decide to speak, they were miserable comforters.

To very hollow understanding of the nature of suffering. Things that you know would make sense if you heard them.

Until you apply them to like any real-life situation, then you realize that it doesn't hold up. But they had all these you know Eastern philosophies about good versus evil, suffering, rewards, curses, punishments.

And without any of them understanding the demonic realm at all, they laced into him. They said, listen, this is all your fault. You're responsible.

You must have done something. You got a secret sin, Job. You bad boy. And... God's punishing you because you're a dirtbag, because you're scum, because you do you deserve it. We know you do.

And I believe it was only years later when Job was writing this story under the inspiration of Holy Spirit that he even realized anything about the devil.

At the time, none of them seemed to know anything about demons and devils, not really.

But he does say something very interesting in chapter 23, verses 3 to 7. And I know it's a bit difficult this time, just having to hear it because I can't get the PowerPoint working.

And he says, oh that I knew how to find him, that I might come to his home. He's talking about someone who would stand in the gap. mediator.

I would present my case before him and fill my mouth with arguments.

I would learn the words which he would answer and perceive what he would tell me. Would he contend with me by the greatness of his power? No. Surely he would pay attention to me.

Here, the upright would argue with him, and I would be free of my judge forever. Because again, he thinks someone's judging him, realize it's the devil who's hurting him.

All he's doing here is he's saying, if only I had an advocate. If only I had a mediator. If only someone one in the heavens was on my side.

If only someone would stand in the gap. Right now, i am being assaulted seven ways to someday if only someone would stand in front of me and say, hey, hands off, Job. He's my friend. He's a good man. He's begging for this.

Prophecies of Jesus

But little does he realize he's actually accidentally prophesying Jesus.

The one who would be our mediator. It would be our advocate, the one who would intercede for us in heaven, the one who would say, I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly of your life. I'm going to bless you.

You're my child. I call you holy. I call you good. I call you clean. call you forgiven. i say the debt is paid. That's what Job's looking for.

And the image of Jesus as a judge is actually ah very common image throughout the Bible. i'm just going to read a few for you in the Old and New Testament. and We see it in David's life a lot. 1 Samuel on the run from Saul, and he writes a number of psalms and sings the psalms, worships and praises at the psalms.

or Through the psalms, he's on the run from the king. Matthew's He says, you know, Lord, vindicate me. Judge my actions.

Judge my enemies. Be my vindicator. See that I'm innocent. Those people are guilty. He's using courtroom language. He knew that the Lord had a courtroom in heaven.

He was saying, I want court in session. Then I will be found innocent. My in enemies will be found guilty. that the court of heaven's decision would be made manifest on the earth.

Isaiah 11, 3 to 4 says this, And he, this is Jesus now, will delight in the fear of the Lord. And he will not judge but what his eyes see, nor make decisions, but his ears hear, but with righteousness he will judge the poor.

And decide with fairness for the humble of the earth. He will strike the earth with a rod of his mouth. With the breath of his lips, he will slay the wicked.

In John chapter 5, 22 to 23, Jesus speaking about the father here and himself. And he says, for not even the father judges anyone, but he has given all judgment to the son.

When people think of judgment day, they think of God as they you know really, really angry. And Jesus is like, Daddy, Jesus is the judge. So that all will honor the son, just that they honor the father.

The one who does not honor the son does not honor the father who sent him.

Because you know the father by knowing Jesus. So if you hate Jesus, you don't love God the father. You can't. They're two separate persons, but they have exactly the same opinions on everything.

John chapter 9, 39. And Jesus said, for judgment, I came into this world so that those who do not see may see and those who see may become blind.

They were the ones who thought that they were so amazing. They a bloated self image, but God's opinion of them was very different because he saw the sin on the inside.

And 2 Corinthians 5, 10. This is written by the Apostle Paul. It says, for we, and this is everybody, we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ. This is the bima seat of Christ.

So that each may receive compensation for his deeds done through the body in accordance with what he has done, whether good or bad. Now, you sometimes Christians get really, really spooked and afraid when they think of standing in court in heaven. They're like,

When, where, what, when we... This for us is at the end of time. why You do not find yourself before the judgment seat of Jesus as soon as you die.

If you believe that Jesus is the Lord, he's the master, he's the boss, and that his blood, his sacrifice and resurrection was sufficient for the forgiveness of all sin, you are his child. His Holy Spirit lives within you. You and God are good.

So what happens is when you die, go heaven and you get a certain amount of certain number of rewards, you know, for a job well done because he's delighted to see you and there is no poverty in heaven.

But at the end of time, everyone will come before his judgment seat. This is not where he reconsiders. And says, you know what? You've been here for 127 years now. But actually, don't think you're a good fish. pulled the web arms It's not like it. Okay? He's Jesus.

Divine Intervention and Advocacy

I wish Job had known this. It would have changed his perspective on a lot of things. I'm going to read this for you. It's from a little book in the Old Testament toward the end called Zechariah.

not a book people read too often, but he has some mad visions, but wonderful revelation. And Zechariah chapter three, verses one to ten, it says this.

Then he showed me Joshua, the high priest. Standing before the angel of the Lord. The angel of the Lord with a capital a does not mean a person like it with wings.

It means the messenger of the Lord. It's actually a name for Jesus. Now we're going look at this in more detail when we look at Moses. But the angel Lord here is actually the pre-incarnate Jesus.

Jesus before he ever was conceived by Mary. So the high priest, Joshua, was standing before Jesus and Satan, standing at his right side to accuse him.
