Introduction to 1st Samuel and Saul’s Quest

00:00:04
Speaker
Hello there, everybody. How are you today? i hope that you're doing absolutely brilliantly. Today, we're going to continue our study on 1st Samuel. This time we're looking at chapter 28.
00:00:18
Speaker
In chapter 28, Saul seeks out the Witch of Endor, the medium of Endor. He is looking for assistance because the Philistines are once again invading Israel.
00:00:34
Speaker
and he wants help, and God's not speaking to him in dreams, he's not getting visions, rolling dice isn't helping. So therefore he turns to

Samuel's Appearance and Righteous Spirits

00:00:45
Speaker
the occult. Now this hints at a bigger study we could actually do on the nature of the relationship between monarchies and the occult, the system of witchcraft in the world. And in a future episode, over the next couple months, we will absolutely get there.
00:01:04
Speaker
But for today, i want to focus on the appearance of Samuel in particular. The witch asks him who she should bring up.
00:01:17
Speaker
And he specifies Samuel, the dead prophet. So she does whatever she does with whatever she did it with. Let's assume was a crystal ball. The next thing she says, oh, I see an old man coming up.
00:01:32
Speaker
Now, righteous spirits are not old when they're in eternity. um But by old, that just means elder. OK, it doesn't actually mean he was 70, 80, 90, 100 years old and looked withered and worn.
00:01:48
Speaker
it can be an elder, that someone who carried a mark of responsibility and an ear of authority. That's probably what she saw. And she said, oh, I see a spirit.
00:01:58
Speaker
He's an elder. He carries authority. He's wearing a robe. And Saul instinctively knew that her witchcraft had worked and she had actually encountered the spirit of the dead Samuel.

Understanding Sheol and Old Testament Afterlife

00:02:12
Speaker
a lot of believers will say, oh stay away from hocus pocus and necromancy and witchcraft. It's all gobbledygook. It's all nonsense. And yes, there's a lot of nonsense out there. There's a lot of artificiality out there.
00:02:25
Speaker
There are a lot of counterfeit, fake, phony spiritual experiences out there. But the Bible actually tells us to stay away from it because it works, because it's true.
00:02:36
Speaker
And in fact, there's no one more surprised in this room when it works than the witch herself. And then she's screaming, having a full on meltdown. But Samuel speaks to Saul and says, you're a sinner.
00:02:53
Speaker
i mean, let's be honest. God had nothing to say to Saul that Samuel had not already told him, right? And Samuel just says, you're a wicked king, and destruction is coming upon you and your household. you and your sons are to die on that battlefield, and you will be where I am.
00:03:18
Speaker
now he's not saying that they'll be in the exact same place, but he's saying you're about to be killed. And in the Old Testament, life after death and conscious life and awareness of life, intelligent life after death, is basic theology.
00:03:35
Speaker
But here's the thing. People today in the church struggle to get their heads around what that actually meant for those individuals.
00:03:48
Speaker
I'm going to call the place where the righteous dead went, and the babies, the children, Sheol positive. Okay, this is called the grave, the realm of the dead, Hades, but those names are interchangeable.
00:04:04
Speaker
The simplest name to go by is paradise.
00:04:12
Speaker
The Old Testament taught that believers in the Lord and those who were innocent, no children, babies, toddlers, the unborn, the preborn,
00:04:24
Speaker
went to a place of comfort called paradise when they died, a place where the spirit of God dwelt. It's not heaven, okay? There's the realm of the dead. This is spiritual dimension underneath the earth, probably overlapping with the earth's core.
00:04:41
Speaker
In Genesis 37, 35,
00:04:44
Speaker
Jacob felt very, very upset when he thought that his favorite son, Joseph, had been eaten and was dead. So he said, no, I shall go down Sheol to my son. He was so depressed. he knew Joseph was righteous. He knew Joseph was

Biblical Prophecies and Afterlife Realms

00:05:03
Speaker
right with God. And he basically gave up on life. And he just said, I'll i'll die and I'll go to the grave where my son is.
00:05:12
Speaker
Job. 1413, I wish you would hide me in the grave and forget me there until your anger has passed, but mark your calendar to think of me again.
00:05:23
Speaker
Job didn't really understand the fullness of the spiritual warfare that he was living through. i don't think he actually knew all that much about the devil and the devil's hand in his affliction until Holy his Spirit told him to write the book.
00:05:38
Speaker
Um, so he just assumed God was angry with him. God was punishing him for some secret sin or some nonsense. And he said, just put me in the grave.
00:05:49
Speaker
And when you're finally angry with me, I'll pop up it again. Psalm 1610. For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your Holy One to rot in the grave. That's actually a prophecy about Jesus, that Jesus' body would not decay in the tomb, that he would rise again after a very short space of time.
00:06:15
Speaker
Where people get confused is because Sheol negative has overlapping names. Sheol, the grave, the realm of the dead, Hades. It's also called Gehenna or hell.
00:06:30
Speaker
Now, people get a bit confused here. They just think, but I thought all the righteous went to heaven or they think paradise is heaven. It isn't. Jesus would say in his earthly ministry that no one on the earth had ever seen father God by that stage.
00:06:48
Speaker
which is to say that no one who had died had gone to heaven. They went to a waiting room. A beautiful world, a fun world, a world full of worship, a world full of enjoyment, a world full of adventure, but not heaven.
00:07:05
Speaker
Heaven is above the sky. Paradise was in the realms um of the dead. It was in the the bowels of the earth.
00:07:17
Speaker
spirit dimension overlapping with the bottom of, um with the middle, rather, of the earth. And that is also where hell was and is.
00:07:34
Speaker
But of course, hell is for the wicked. Psalm 6.5 says, Among the dead, no one proclaims your name. Who praises you from the grave? No one who's on fire and burning is singing songs about the Lord. They just aren't.
00:07:50
Speaker
Their pain is their preoccupation, not his goodness.
00:07:55
Speaker
Psalm 917, the wicked will go down to the grave. This is the fate of all the nations who ignore God. They lived in rebellion on the earth. So therefore, they're judged with eternal separation from the God who wanted to reconcile them to him.
00:08:15
Speaker
Don't let me be disgraced. Psalm 31, 17 says, o Lord, for I call out to you for help. Let the wicked be disgraced. Let them lie silent in the grave.
00:08:28
Speaker
Again, righteous people were not silent. They were absolutely living their best life in paradise. They were more alive in paradise than they were on the earth. Not so in hell. In hell, you die 49, 14.
00:08:43
Speaker
sound fourteen nine fourteen They are like sheep and are destined to die. Death will be their shepherd, but the upright will prevail over them in the morning.
00:08:54
Speaker
For the wicked, their forms will decay in the grave, far from their princely mansions. So all the good, perfect, pleasing plans and gifts that God had for them, they will not step into.
00:09:09
Speaker
Instead, they will wither away.
00:09:14
Speaker
Matthew 11, 23.
00:09:16
Speaker
Jesus says, and you, Pepernam, will you be exalted to heaven? You'll be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
00:09:32
Speaker
So basically, as wicked are the people of Sodom were, it's where we get the word Sodomite, people who literally tried to rape angels. If they had seen Jesus perform a miracle, they would have repented.
00:09:45
Speaker
He would have given them time back, centuries and millennia of grace, of a grace period back. Capronom, the people who knew him, he knew the chippy he ate who had played in his sports team as a child, who had bought furniture from his furniture shop, those people rejected him.
00:10:14
Speaker
Matthew 16, 18. And I tell you, you are Peter. And on this rock, I'll build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Jesus' Descent and Triumph in the Afterlife

00:10:28
Speaker
Mark 9, 43 to 48. This is a pretty scary one. And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It's better for you to enter the millennial kingdom of life, crippled, than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire, where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.
00:10:54
Speaker
And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. For it's better for you to enter Jesus' earthly kingdom, his millennial 1,000-year reign kingdom, which will be in our future,
00:11:06
Speaker
um for those who survive the apocalypse, then with two feet to be thrown into hell, where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.
00:11:19
Speaker
And if your eye causes you to sin, especially during the Great Tribulation, tear it out, for it's better for you to enter the kingdom of God, or the kingdom of heaven. That's not the world of heaven, that's an earthly kingdom he establishes in our future.
00:11:34
Speaker
If you don't know what I'm talking about, read the book of Revelation. Tear it out. um For it's better than to have two eyes and end up being thrown into hell where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.
00:11:54
Speaker
So this causes some confusion. There's an understanding that the realms of the dead, paradise and hell, are both underground. But Luke 16, 19 to 31, most clearly tells us what it looks like.
00:12:11
Speaker
Okay, it says that you've got paradise above, an impassable chasm, a chasm that no human in and of themselves could cross, and then the world of hell.
00:12:27
Speaker
So let's have a look at this one together.
00:12:37
Speaker
The rich man and Lazarus.
00:12:41
Speaker
This is a story Jesus told, not a parable, but a true story. There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.
00:12:53
Speaker
At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores, and longed to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked the sores. Ew. Ew.
00:13:09
Speaker
The time came when the beggar died and his guardian angels carried him to Abraham's side. Where was Abraham? In paradise. Abraham had long since died. Again, Abraham's not in heaven at this point. He's in paradise.
00:13:24
Speaker
As is Joseph, Jesus' stepfather. Adam and Eve. Joseph from Genesis. David. All the heroes of the Old Testament.
00:13:35
Speaker
The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was in torment, so talking about hell here, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, Lazarus by his side.
00:13:50
Speaker
So hell is below, paradise was above, and you could see from one to the other.
00:13:58
Speaker
So the rich man calls Abraham, because when you're dead, you have instant recognition. You know who other people are just by looking at them. Father Abraham, have pity on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I'm in agony in this fire.
00:14:20
Speaker
the rich man is burning. Paradise has water, beautiful springs, peaceful springs, and even though he is dead and on fire, the rich man still thinks,
00:14:34
Speaker
He is superior to Lazarus. Still thinks he can boss him around, give him orders, treat him like a servant, treat him like a slave. Hey, tell him do this for me.
00:14:48
Speaker
No one is sorry for their sins in hell. There is no repentance in the soul. There is no goodness in the soul. There is no righteousness in the soul.
00:15:00
Speaker
only thing that's really there is trauma, anguish, and wickedness.
00:15:09
Speaker
But Abraham replied, son, wow. Very sympathetic even to someone who's in hell.
00:15:19
Speaker
Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things. But now he is comforted here, and you are in agony.
00:15:31
Speaker
It's not because poor people automatically get a happily ever after, and rich people don't. The material possessions in this situation were a picture a state on the inside.
00:15:44
Speaker
Lazarus was poor, but believed in God. The rich man believed in himself, believed in his wealth, believed in material things, but had no loving, intimate,
00:16:00
Speaker
salvation forgiving relationship that comes through Lord.
00:16:06
Speaker
And besides all this, between us and you, a great chasm has been set in place so that those who want to go from here to you cannot.
00:16:18
Speaker
Isn't that interesting? Even people in paradise would want have people in hell. Why else would they want to be there? There's nothing about hell that's enticing. Unless it was to give some relief to the damned.
00:16:34
Speaker
But it was impossible. Nor can anyone cross. I think we see crosses are important. Cross over from there to us. You guys cannot come here.
00:16:49
Speaker
the rich man answered, Then I beg you, Father, send Lazarus to my family, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them so that they will not come to this place of torment.
00:17:02
Speaker
Abraham replied, They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them. They know what the Bible is, in their case, the Torah.
00:17:13
Speaker
What's stopping them from reading it and believing it? and receiving the goodness of God and his knowledge, wisdom, insight, understanding, and revelation.
00:17:24
Speaker
They have no excuse.
00:17:31
Speaker
No, Father Abraham, the rich man said, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent. They're not interested in the Bible. They're not interested in the word of God.
00:17:45
Speaker
But my brothers are hopeless cases. Only one thing could possibly cause them to relent from their wickedness and repent of their sin and turn it all around. And that's if someone dies and then goes back and tells them what it looks like, what this place is, how bad it is, and how good they can have it.
00:18:12
Speaker
What is he doing? Of all the situations Jesus could have spoken about, all the real life situations Jesus could have spoken about, he has highlighted one instance where a rich man literally said, only Jesus can help the hopeless cases.
00:18:31
Speaker
Jesus is the man went to the grave and came back up again. who is the law of Moses and the words the prophets in flesh, in 3D, with skin on.
00:18:48
Speaker
But Abraham said to the rich man, if they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead. Because Jesus is the fulfillment of the law of Moses. Jesus gave Moses the law. on Mount Sinai and Mount Horeb, if they will not believe it in its written form, it's because they would not believe Jesus if he stood in front of them in 3D.
00:19:17
Speaker
Who do the prophets speak about? The Lord hosts, Jesus, the God-man. If they would not believe the word it's released to them, paper form and verbally,
00:19:34
Speaker
they would not receive it, even if Jesus were to stand before them and say, hey, this is about me.
00:19:53
Speaker
Speaking of Jesus, in Luke 23, 43, as Jesus hung on the cross with two thieves, two criminals, and his right and his lefts,
00:20:05
Speaker
One of them, well, both of them initially, insulted him. But the criminal on his left continued to berate him and said, you know, if you're God himself, you're the son of God, save us and save yourself.
00:20:20
Speaker
Not realizing that Jesus was not saving himself so he could save them.
00:20:26
Speaker
And the one on his right eventually said, oh my goodness.
00:20:32
Speaker
We criminals are guilty and we deserve be punished. A righteous judge, a righteous ruler, punishes the wicked. That's a just decision. With this guy in the middle, he is in innocent. He is special.
00:20:47
Speaker
There's something about him that is unique, that is different. He is not one of us. And Jesus said to him, Verily i say unto thee, to Today shall thou be with me in paradise.
00:21:03
Speaker
That is the one and only time I ever expect to read the King James Version on this YouTube channel. but but but So the Dinah's right says, Remember me when you enter your kingdom.
00:21:21
Speaker
Is that the kingdom of heaven, the world of heaven? Possibly. Possibly. But actually, I think he had a revelation in that moment. I think suddenly he understood that Jesus was going to come back to life again, and at some point bring in his millennial kingdom, his 1,000-year reign.
00:21:37
Speaker
Because you have to remember, for Christians, we are so heaven-obsessed. And heaven's a good thing. Heaven's a wonderful place to be. For the Jews, that was never a preoccupation of theirs.
00:21:49
Speaker
They had no expectation of dying and going to heaven. It was not on their radar. what they were always anticipating was the Lord bringing in a physical earthly kingdom of which Jerusalem in Israel was the capital of a global system run by God himself in flesh.
00:22:08
Speaker
So I actually think that this guy on the right is saying, when you come back to life and you bring in that kingdom on the earth and the Roman empire and the antichrist and the false prophets are just a blip in history and no one remembers their names or what it looked like bad it was, remember me.
00:22:30
Speaker
And Jesus says, you're coming to paradise with me today. That does not mean heaven. Jesus said, we're going down, but to a very good place.
00:22:43
Speaker
ne Colossians 2, 15 gives us a little bit of insight into the power of the cross. It's a beautiful one where it talks about how this whole, hold on a second while open the screen for you.
00:23:00
Speaker
It's always good to see scripture for your own reference. And says, having discerned the powers and authorities, Jesus made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
00:23:16
Speaker
That's referring to demonic powers and demonic authorities. that Jesus absolutely humiliated them. I will give a teaching on this a little bit later on in the year, but in short, um on the cross, while he was humiliated and stripped naked and exposed and mocked and insulted and ridiculed, that was what was required to wash us clean and to cover us in his own righteousness.
00:23:45
Speaker
And I believe that he descended to every realm under the earth, on paradise, because he had to, you know, drop the criminal on the right there, cross the chasm, which only he could, because he's God, went into hell and absolutely mortified the living daylights.
00:24:09
Speaker
out of all those demons. I believe they came down there to mock him, to jeer him, to sneer at him, to torture him, probably out curiosity, and he humiliated them.
00:24:22
Speaker
I'm sure he shone his light so brightly they lost their skin, and their talons and their horns fell off, and their fangs fell out of their mouths, and a lot of them went blind, mutant death.

Saul, the Witch of Endor, and Unconventional Divine Plans

00:24:35
Speaker
I'm sure it was the most wonderful act of payback Anyone has ever seen. we also know from later on the New Testament that he descended down to Tartarus, where the demons who got women pregnant in the days of Noah are still chained up.
00:24:52
Speaker
And he had a harsh word for them, too. But again, in a future teaching, i'm going to look at all those in detail. And very soon going to a series on what hell looks like. Who is there? What's there?
00:25:05
Speaker
going to be a scary one, but it's important to know. This today is just an overview.
00:25:11
Speaker
That are told in Ephesians 4, 8 to 10. This is why it says, When Jesus ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.
00:25:24
Speaker
What does he ascended mean except that he also descended to the lower earthly regions? He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, which is the atmosphere, aerospace, and the world of heaven, in order to fill all things.
00:25:46
Speaker
I believe two things are happening here. When it says that he ascended on high and took many captives, pictorially, that actually is like an emperor or a ruler or a commander chaining up your enemies and putting them in a spectacle or parade.
00:26:04
Speaker
So after he defeated all the demons in hell. I believe he chained them all up and went in a victory lap. na in and an in nain in na in And just absolutely humiliated them in front of all the heavenly host, all the garden angels, all the choir angels, all the courier angels, all the angel chefs.
00:26:26
Speaker
Oh, there aren't a lot of them. And the fact that it equates... him taking captives, or you might say prisoners, or people who've been in prison, or in a holding cell, and ascending.
00:26:41
Speaker
i also believe that it's saying that not only was he embarrassing the forces of evil, but also that at this point he took everyone who was in paradise.
00:26:54
Speaker
Adam, Eve, Seth, The two Josephs, Daniel, David, Abigail, Ruth, Naomi, Boaz, Abraham, Isaac, Jeremiah, Isaiah, all the heroes the Old Testament, and then led them up into the world of heaven as well, where they now live to live.
00:27:18
Speaker
In hell you die to die, in heaven you live to live, you live to be alive. So hell is still... A very dynamic place. It's still in operation. It's still in full swing. It's still a horrific place. A place of torture. a place of torment.
00:27:36
Speaker
A place of horror.
00:27:39
Speaker
Paradise now is empty. It's vacant. It's just there. There's no need for it. Because everyone who was there has been brought up into heaven because of what Jesus did on the cross.
00:27:54
Speaker
So to bring that back to 1 Samuel, when the witch of Endor sees Saul and goes, oh my goodness, I see an elder wearing a robe and he's coming up. He actually was down below her.
00:28:06
Speaker
He was in paradise, but he came up to the earth in that moment, gave a harsh prophetic word, and then went back down again. This unnerves some believers.
00:28:19
Speaker
They think, but this is witchcraft, this is the occult, this is demonic, why, why, why would this work? Why would God... God and his sovereignty can do whatever he wants.
00:28:32
Speaker
Okay? We think of the Christmas story, where a star, or literally a light, appears in the sky, and depending on where it moves, or but you know, the earth...
00:28:45
Speaker
spinning and and and and all the cosmological astronomical astrological things going on the wise men follow it literally to just where Jesus was living with his parents Mary and stepfather Joseph you might say Christians should not be into astrology or astronomy why did it work?
00:29:08
Speaker
because God
00:29:11
Speaker
you might say Well, necromancy is bad and we shouldn't talk to dead people. But on the Mount of Transfiguration, Jesus had a full-on conversation with the dead Moses.
00:29:23
Speaker
Why? Because God.
00:29:28
Speaker
You might say that, you know, oh, we should only pray to God. We shouldn't look to other physical things. In the Old Testament, they used an ephod. They held up an ephod, a breastplate, and they prayed. And somehow they got an answer from it.
00:29:41
Speaker
Or they had the umim and the thumim. I think I'm pronouncing those correctly. Like, imagine rolling dice. And if it's an odd number, God says no. if it's an even number, God says yes. That would be the equivalent today.
00:29:53
Speaker
and God spoke that way. So, just because something seems strange, or different, or weird, does not mean God will not use it. God will use anything and everything.
00:30:06
Speaker
One of the ways he really talks to people is in dreams. I know for myself, um one of my grandmothers died about 10, 11 years ago. And I remember at the time being very concerned. You know, oh my goodness, where is she? Is she in hell? Is she in heaven? and What happened?
00:30:25
Speaker
I had felt this urge to go talk to her the morning she died. i didn't act in it. Half an hour later, she was dead. and I felt like the single biggest scumbag on earth.
00:30:40
Speaker
And I was responsible for her eternal damnation if she was not with the Lord. That's just where my mind was. And then next thing, I had a dream.
00:30:51
Speaker
And in that dream, i was standing on a green bank. And she was just over a river. She looked younger than I'd ever seen her. And she said, I'm fine. i'm okay. I'm with Jesus. I'm fine. Don't be afraid. I'm fine.
00:31:04
Speaker
and there were green rolling hills behind her. And i kept that dream to myself initially. And then later on spoke to somebody who said, oh, you know, your grandmother had a recurring dream on the earth.
00:31:18
Speaker
Her sister had died and they had been, they were best friends. And in my grandmother's dream, she was on a green bank and on the other side of a river, she would see her sister and she would talk to her and there were rolling hills of green behind her.
00:31:34
