Brentford Squad Updates and Challenges

00:00:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
So then let's get straight into it and the team news and perhaps the biggest um headline was that Mikael Damsgaard was only fit enough for the bench.
00:00:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
We mentioned in the preview episode that he was unwell during the international break, didn't feature at all even on the bench in both of the Denmark games and He clearly wasn't fit enough or ready to start. Maybe he hasn't trained too much. And Thomas Frank just wanted to be a bit cautious, especially considering there's only three or thought four games between matches between the Newcastle and the Chelsea game.
00:01:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
However, I did think when he came on, he looked good. He looked himself. He didn't look off it at all. and We'll go on to talk about it. Perhaps he should have done better in front of goal. Perhaps, you know, goals are still the thing missing from his game. But I think in terms of creativity, I thought as a team, we got so much more creative when he entered the pitch. And, you know, he offers something that absolutely no one else in the Brentford squad offers. And I think for me, still quite clearly our best player this season Other team news, Vandenberg was preferred to Christopher Ayer at right back, which meant Pinnock continued alongside Collins.
00:01:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think, and I still stand by, that Collins and Vandenberg is our best centre-back pairing. and then i probably would have gone Ayer at right back, assuming Coyote um isn' isn't thin enough and um has obviously been injured himself and hasn't started a game for Brentford yet.
00:02:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I would have been very shocked if Coyote had started on this occasion. However, I would have liked him to come on. I would um have liked him to come on when Ayer came on in the second half.
00:02:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
At that point, we're losing in the game. I think Aya as a right-back profile is more similar to Vandenberg. I don't think we've seen those driving forward ones runs that we may have saw from him earlier in the season.
00:02:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I just think if you choose to bring Coyote on instead at that point of the game, then I think he offers a lot more going forwards on the overlap. You know, he's quick. He's not afraid to make those forward runs. He's got...
00:02:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
the extra weapon with the long throw as well which is longer than kevin sharder's throw um so that could have caused some chaos towards the end of the game and then also by being more of a direct threat on that right hand side would he bring more out of someone like brian and boomer who despite the penalty i don't think had his best game again and i think that's been a ah theme over the last few weeks
00:03:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
but does a more attacking option on that right-hand side coming from defence such as Coyote, does that give opposition defenders a bit more to think about and therefore open up a bit more space on Brian and Bumbo?
00:03:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's an interesting one and it's definitely something I want to see happen soon in terms of Coyote starting a game. um I also think, you know, simply Vandenberg's best position is at centre-back and that's where he should be used. um i thought Pinnock did look a bit shaky again here, which we'll go on to um in the second part.
00:03:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
The other person I want to raise is Matthijs Jensen. He's still suffering with illness, which is the same illness I assume that kept him out of the games prior to the international break. No further details have been given from Thomas Frank. However, can only hope we'll see him back soon. I hope he'll back be back soon. The way it's phrased is still that, you know, he hasn't got any physical injury.
00:04:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah He is just suffering from illness. Maybe there's something going around at the moment because obviously Damsgaard was ill as well over the international break. But hopefully we can see Janssen back. It's been a very disrupted team for him.
00:04:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
um this season and I think Jensen, someone like him off the bench gives us another attacking option, gives us another creative option um and a bit more to do from the bench. I think at the moment we're getting some defensive depth back but not really necessarily going forwards. It's not not really the same.

Analysis of Newcastle's Strategy and Performance

00:04:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
So then let's look at Newcastle. They were unchanged from the Carabao Cup final team. It's a strong and experienced team in all areas. I don't think anyone thought this would be an easy game.
00:05:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, despite the, yeah the absences that they have Anthony Gordon and and Lewis Hall, um, to name two of them, you can see from front to back, the likes of Pope, Trippier, Dan Byrne, very experienced players.
00:05:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
As we spoke about in the preview, Bruno, Tonali, Joe Linton, that's a formidable midfield, very physical, lots of quality as you saw Tonali's goal. Um, And then the likes of Izak up front, who I don't think had his best game, but he's always dangerous in front in front of goals, scored one and probably could have scored more.
00:05:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And then the likes of ah Murphy as well, who I think goes a little bit underrated in this Newcastle side. You know, he's played almost every game for them this season. ah He is very reliable. he's not he'll he'll He'll never particularly stand out, but I think he's very reliable and obviously and not another assist for him here.
00:05:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And what was a really good cross um despite Brian Abumo's slip, which we will all come on to in

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to part two of your daily Brentford podcast and let's break down the action from what was a bit of an unlucky diff defeat I think on Wednesday night. I think Brentford certainly have grounds to think they could have got a point out of it potentially even more if luck went our way.
00:07:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But this is how things go sometimes, particularly when you play other top sides in the Premier League. I thought Newcastle started the better side. um Kind of as expected, given the home atmosphere, it can be a very difficult place to go.
00:08:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Any week, let alone under the lights, just after they've won a major trophy um with the with the away fans up in the gods, as they usually are. um It was always, I think, going to be a bit of a difficult start. um There were lots of early crosses coming in. I thought Isaac should have scored early on.
00:08:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Key Lewis Potter perhaps did enough to distract him and put him off, um which led to Isaac heading wide. So we got away with one, I think, early on there. um But as the minutes wore on, I thought we got into the game more. I think we struggled to really create anything clear-cut, anything of note without the likes of Dam's guard in that first half.
00:08:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I thought in terms of possession and territory, we did get much more into the game and it looked much more of an even contest as we as we approached half-time. It was interesting to see us going long at goal kicks, something that we don't always do this season, and something that I think is...
00:09:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
a good thing against, you know, the top five or six teams in the Premier League because simply when we don't, when we persist with trying to play out from the back, I think it's all too easy for us to invite too much pressure.
00:09:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
They force us into mistakes and then you're giving away, you know, really top quality chances.
00:09:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's something you just can't afford to do, i don't think, against the very best teams who who will really punish Heath on that. So I thought the fact we're able to get it up the pitch, again, Shardot can be a target in those situations, you know, enabled us to have some territory further up and enabled us to bri really be in this game. And I thought what we did get out of that first half is a few more corners.
00:09:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, no real cutting edge from those corners. I didn't see any anything... um any kind of routines that look different to, you know, what anyone else does. And it's a little bit disappointing. I do want to see us do more from that. You know, you've got set piece coaches nowadays who work on this type of thing and, you know, their area of work I'm assuming

Critique of Brentford's Set Pieces and Defense

00:10:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
is is pretty niche. You know, that they are focused on set pieces. That is their primary consideration.
00:10:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Surely there could be a bit more creativity without attacking set pieces. and I don't have much confidence in the moment we'll score from them. I don't think the delivery is the best, which isn't necessarily the set piece coach's fault.
00:10:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
But even when the delivery is better, you know, can we do something a bit different, do something a bit clever or put them really under pressure? um That's what I want to see because again, in this first half,
00:10:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
If we could have made something from one of the corners, you know we could have taken the lead. And you know at that point, it was an even game. And if we score at the right time, and you never know what could happen.
00:10:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think weirdly what we're seeing from us and in the last few weeks is a little bit more effectiveness from long throw-ins rather than corners. And, you know, I'd like to see us add just another string to our bow, get better at corners. don't see why it's not something we can achieve. um I think that's something any Premier League's I can do um if they put enough work into it and if they put enough imagination into it. So,
00:11:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's definitely an area I think we've got to look to improve on next season. I'll always caveat that when I talk about Keith Andrews to say that we are defending set pieces, I think, better than we have ever done um in the Premier League.
00:11:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's about adding layers to that now. It's about being better going forwards as well, um especially from those corner situations. In the first half, there are a couple of shaky moments on Pinnock again, which I hate to have to raise.
00:11:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
um the first one where he slipped over, the second one, Isaac won the duel against him. You know, Pinnock should be winning that ball coming from high. um You know, that used to be his bread and butter against Isaac, who is a brilliant, brilliant world cast forward, but, you know, his aerial ability isn't the best. He kind of shrugged Pinnock off the ball, got round him um and ran through on goal. And it was only the fact that he didn't,
00:12:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
pass to Barnes in the initial phase. He delayed his shots and then eventually kind of played a cross shot towards Barnes, who headed it home but was offside.
00:12:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think we got away with one there. I think you'd normally expect Isaac to score himself. um And there was, as I said, a prime opportunity to square it to Barnes earlier in the move where, you know, you'd probably expect that of Isaac, I think.
00:12:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's of the level of striker that you would expect to score there. so I think we did get a bit lucky again there. I'd say, if anything, Newcastle did edge the first half in terms of opportunities. Obviously, the one at the start, this one.
00:12:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then the goal, which came on the very stroke of half-time, which is extremely frustrating. The move starts with Nathan Collins pressing very high up the pitch, am following one of the midfielders into midfield.
00:13:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Bumo ended up being the one tracking Izak. And I do not think this would have been the plan um in training. I know we like to press high at times. I know that sometimes involves Collins more so than Pinnock pressing forwards and following players into midfield. But surely Bumo was never meant to be the one to track Izak, especially that deep. you know Could Collins done a bit more to get back quicker?
00:13:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Could you know someone like Norgard take control of that situation? I don't think you want in any situation your right attacker um in the middle of the penalty area trying to defend across. I don't think that is something that we would have planned for. And I don't think that was going to be the intention at all.
00:13:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of course, it was a bit of an unlucky slip from Brian and Bumo and it was made worse by... the deflection from Izak taking a nick off of Mbumo to take it past Feckin, who honestly may have saved it otherwise. I don't think it was the best con connection from Izak, which kind of summed up his half, getting into good positions, not really quite had the end product.
00:14:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But it it was always going in the moment it took a nick off Mbumo and I think will be very disappointed it was a great cross from a Newcastle point of view but we'd be very disappointed um that we were caught out of position like that that he's that was allowed space like that and that he was left with Brian Abumo for the goal I just think we we've got to you know be alert to the danger fair enough Collins is pressing up high I think that is a tactic on our behalf and and and often does work
00:14:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
But can he do more to get back? Can someone like Norgaz step into the back line to help? I just don't think Brian Abuma should be in those situations and I don't think we should blame him.
00:14:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was a bit of an unlucky slip. Deflection made it more difficult for Flecken. and But ultimately the worst time to score in a half where I thought we were a bit lucky to an extent. But I also feel like we came into it.
00:15:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And, you know, during periods we had more territory in possession. um But it was always going to be a bit of an uphill task when we go 1-0 down in those circumstances.
00:15:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought the second half, however, we looked more promising. I thought we looked really good um yeah in stages. Damsgaard came on nice and early um for Thomas Frank anyway. He doesn't normally like to make subs too early in the game.
00:15:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But I thought Damsgaard came on with, you know, at least half an hour to be able to make a difference. And I thought he really did that. I think when he's not on the pitch, you see the lack of creativity. um and and And when he is there, you you can just see how he unlocks play like no one else on the side does.
00:15:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And our spell of pressure culminates ultimately in Wissa winning the penalty. i think it was a penalty. um He just gets there before Nick Pope.
00:16:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
um he's not really going anywhere, Wisser, so you could argue from Nick's point of view, does he really need to intervene there? The angle's tight on Wisser, but Wisser gets there first, he gets a touch from the ball.
00:16:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
You've seen him give him before, you so i recall um a similar one being given against Brentford at Newcastle a couple of years ago, um which Newcastle scored from, I think that was a bit more contentious in this one, I think clearly Nick Pope catches Wisser, and then Brian making no mistake from the spot kick and i think he only becomes now the third player in premier league history to have taken at least 10 penalties in the premier league without yet missing the palace game obviously doesn't count given that it was ordered as a retake and then he scored the retake i thought it was a fairly quiet game again though for both whistle and brian i i think
00:17:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've not seen them at the best in recent weeks. I think if you're talking about liveliness, Kevin Shard has perhaps outshone them um in terms of, you know, goal-mouth action and trying to create something and breaking lines and being difficult to defend against. I think we do need to see more, especially from Brian and Bumo.
00:17:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
know, if he's to go to a big club in the summer, I think they certainly won't be as accommodating to him as we are. He almost is immune from being substituted at Brentford, but you know you can see it. you can You can very much see it a top four or five side.
00:17:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Him not playing too well. Fans will get frustrated. He'll get substituted and then he'll find himself on the bench in future. So, you know, I want to see him do well. even Even after he leaves the club, he's done so much for us, but I think he does need to improve, especially in these bigger games where he doesn't get so many chances. I think it's easier For him to shine um when we're playing the likes of Leicester and getting chance after chance, I think these sorts of games where it's tighter um is where we do need to see a little bit more from him and a little bit more effective if when he does get on the ball.
00:18:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
um However, penalty went in. Perfect record from the spot. that record His record now must be better than Ivan Toney's, who of course missed one. against Newcastle himself for Brentford. Nick Pope saving on that occasion. and And shortly after the spot kick, we continued our momentum and Ethan Pinnock hitting the post from close range.

Key Moments and Potential Turnarounds

00:18:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Am I being a bit harsh to say he should be scoring there? I think there's a big old target to aim for. I think Pope is quite far over in his goal. I think if he gets any if he gets it anywhere in that corner, it's a goal.
00:18:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I'm not sure he gets perhaps the perfect connection that he wanted on the ball. Of course, he's still unlucky. he hits the post. It's a very close effort. Any further inside than it could have well gone in, but you know, these are the chances, these are the moments. And I think that is a really key moment for me because that was a stage in the game where we actually looked on top.
00:19:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
We looked the most threatening at that stage of the game. You thought maybe we looked the most likely to go on and get the winner. And if we were to score there, make it two one then I think it could be a completely different end to the game.
00:19:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And we could be potentially even be looking at a win. So, these are the big moments that haven't gone away our way enough this season when it comes to playing the top, you know, five, six, seven teams in the Premier League.
00:19:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's why we haven't got enough results in these types of games. You know, even... even to the extent of turning defeats into draws. I think if you look at the league table, we haven't drawn many. We've lost more than the teams above us. And that is really the difference between us and the six six or so point gap um separating us from the European places. So again, you know turning games like this into draws, which you can see how easily it could have been done.
00:20:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It's just what we're missing a little bit and I think yes Pinnock perhaps should have scored in this situation. um And then the momentum swung back unfortunately to Newcastle which with what was a bit of a freak goal from Tonali.
00:20:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
He said himself in the post-match interview that it was more of 70% cross shot. it very much came across like Tonali did not mean to do what he did.
00:20:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I do not think you see you will see a goal like that again very often for or against us. I almost had to take a double take watching it.
00:20:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was and absolutely brilliant strike. You know, lots of power high into the goal. It was moving. I think it would be harsh. And I know Matcha Day touched on it a little bit and they were a bit torn on whether it was Flecken's fault or not. I think it is a bit harsh to blame Flecken in those circumstances. I think his starting position, it was not too high.
00:21:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
and You know, I wouldn't also think a keeper would be any deeper. in terms of a starting position when he's expecting a cross to come into the box. You know, you always want your keeper to be ready to claim that cross if necessary.
00:21:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I don't think he was excessively high and leaving a target for Tonali to hit. Like I said, I don't think Tonali had that in his head to hit that kind of target. um So I think it was a bit unfortunate. and the And the way the ball was moving came in quickly and high.
00:21:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it would have taken a very good save um for a keeper to save that. And I don't necessarily put that down as a mistake. um What I do put it down is, it's a freak goal, um which I suppose happens sometimes. You never feel like Brentford scored too many of those. Tenali has certainly scored a few of those against us this season alone.
00:22:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But, you know, we've we've got to take it on the chin. we've It happens sometimes. And that is a difference. And, you know, the luck, or if if you want to use that that term, this wasn't really on our side um in this game, you know, and it was really the moment before when Pinnock hit the post um where things could have been different, where things, you know, the tide really could have turned.

Bench Impact and Substitutes Discussion

00:22:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And Brentford continue to have some moments late on, um but there is a lack of real game changes on the bench at the moment, aside from Damsgaard. you know, the majority of our CDA subs are defenders. You've got Ben Mee, you've got Chris Devire, you've got Michael Coyote, Paris Magoma came on.
00:22:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fine. He's a tidy player, but, you know, is he really going to come on and and score the winner for you? Probably not. Um, I think it's difficult. What what I would have said is is I would have brought Coyote on instead of Aya, as I mentioned at the start, due to his ability going forward and his is is um threat from set pieces. But otherwise, i think, you know, Thomas Frank is playing with hands tied behind his back. I thought Dam's guard made a massive difference and he also missed the best chance we probably had, a aside from the Pinnock effort, early in stoppage tie and the ball came across to him.
00:23:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Came to him on the volley. He controlled it. He set a chance for himself. And he's got to be hitting the target there for me. i think, of course, it can be difficult to and connect with a volley. um But he had a bit of time and space to get a shot away.
00:23:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
um To fire it over from there is really disappointing. I think you've got to be at least working Nick Pope. And, you know, that's the one thing that we have said all season that's really been missing from Damascar's game, I think.
00:23:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's so good creatively. He's so good, and you know, at producing assists. I think sometimes with his finishing, perhaps he overthinks it a little bit. I don't really know what it is because, you know, his technical quality is so good in terms of his passing. You would have thought that, you know, his ability to do the same, but it being a shot, um you know, would also be something that's good. But, you know, you just got a look at the stats. He's is ah joint second in the league for assists this season.
00:24:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
But in terms of goals, Christian Norgard even has outscored in this season so that is something definitely for him to add to his game next season but apart from that I can't criticize Mikhail Damsgaard I think he's been brilliant for us this season and even in this game despite missing that chance you know he was the one who also you know was was chief creator for others and that was epitomized minutes later um A fantastic ball over the top from Dam's guard into Kevin Sharder.
00:24:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Forced a save out of Pope. The ball came back out to him. He tried to get back across to Whistler. I'm not sure there's much more he could have done. It was a decent effort, but you wonderful ball over the top from Dam's guard. And if that had gone in, I think the credit would have been very much with him.
00:25:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
We had a penalty shout right at the whistle as well. Now, initially when I saw it, I thought penalty. um I think the more I see the replays now, I think Bruno does just about get to the ball first. that they're but They're both clearly going for the ball and I think Bruno does get to the ball first. So I don't think um it was necessarily a penalty. Certainly not a situation where VAR should be intervening and changing what the referee decided.
00:25:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
However, like Thomas Frank, I am a little bit more inclined to agree with him about the first incident.

VAR Decisions and Referee Calls

00:25:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Again, um involving Bruno and Damsgaard. Damsgaard clearly pushed with two hands on the edge of the box, which knocked him off the ball.
00:25:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, maybe there wasn't quite enough for the VAR to overturn the referee's decision. I think perhaps potentially both of them are those 50-50 ones where if and the referee gives it, it doesn't get overturned.
00:26:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know Maybe the referee might have been also a bit reluctant to give the second penalty after he's already given one um in the game. But ultimately, I think we just got to let those go. I don't think um they were clear and obvious. And therefore, as the rules currently are,
00:26:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
um As long as they're applied um consistently, you know, I don't think we can have any complaints about those two decisions.

Looking Ahead: Brentford's Future Fixtures

00:26:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought overall it was a decent performance and I think we can feel a little bit hard done by not to get a point. I think the nature of this fixture and also the fixture we've got coming up in the next few weeks, Chelsea up next, Arsenal following that, i the likes of Brighton and Forest not far after,
