Mystical Findings: Black Feathers and Missing Items

00:00:50
Speaker
We have a box here of like clothes that I'm going to vacuum seal that are like winter clothes. Oh, yeah. And I'm so glad the box was right here because it's chilly and I needed a card. Like, this is perfect. One last hurrah. Yeah, I know, right? Like, I look like an old lady, but it's okay. Can we just talk about this situation?
00:01:18
Speaker
I cannot believe you're still finding the fucking feathers. This is the one that I found last time. The one that I sent a picture of last night, I know that it hasn't been there. I burn incense in my office all the time. I lit incense last night. I was sticking my little stick in the little incense hole. As I was looking down at it, I saw it over here and I was like, are you fucking kidding me? It's a bigger one. I was like, where are these fucking coming from? Yeah.
00:01:49
Speaker
That's crazy. Yeah. I mean, I don't know. It has to be at this, like finding one, maybe two, like I could cut, like chalk that up to a coincidence, but four. Yeah. And randomly all the time, you don't have anything that would produce black feathers like that. Like when I was like, maybe it's like the incense box because the native soul ones have feathers in them, but they're colored. They're like orange and pink.
00:02:16
Speaker
Yeah, at least like the boxes that I have, there's not black feathers. So I was like, I don't understand where these are coming from. And like Anthony found one while I was out of town in my office on my fireplace because he hung my dad's gun up while I was gone. Yeah. And he was like, yeah, I found a black feather on your fireplace when I told him about the one that I found on my desk. And then I found one on my stove. Like I was getting ready to cook dinner. Why, like, why would it be in my kitchen if I'm finding them in my office? Right.
00:02:43
Speaker
Yeah, it doesn't make sense. So we started looking it up and I sent you the little thing about it said something that I can't even remember. It was something along the lines of someone's watching out for you or something like that. Which is really sweet.

Exploring Witch Classifications

00:03:00
Speaker
Yeah. Well, and when I found this one on my desk was when that orb flew by and I was like, what the fuck is going on in here?
00:03:10
Speaker
Right. Yeah. I can get behind that 100%. I want to believe that that is what's happening. Also, I don't think I've told you this, but things keep going missing.
00:03:23
Speaker
like random things. So I have this, it's like a flameless lighter, like an electrical one. And we use it downstairs for like incense and candles and stuff. And I used it one day, lit incense, put it like we always put it in this drawer, like we have a drawer in our kitchen that has like all of our incense and then

The Art and Alchemy of Cooking

00:03:42
Speaker
like this lighter. And so I went to light incense one day and I got the incense out and I went to grab the thing and I was like, where the fuck is it? I like dug through the drawer, couldn't find it because I thought maybe it like got buried under something.
00:03:54
Speaker
So I took everything out of the drawer, wasn't there. And I was like, maybe Anthony put it in one of the other drawers. So I like looked through all of them, couldn't find it. This thing was missing for like a month and a half. And then while Anthony was gone, because the shit always happens when he's gone, I opened the drawer to get M sense and it was sitting on top. And I was like, excuse me. And
00:04:20
Speaker
Like, it's like, that's just crazy. My wine opener is
00:04:27
Speaker
missing. No, we can't have that. And that happened... Well, I have multiple, but this happened when Anthony was gone. Again, I went to open a bottle of wine. I opened the drawer where it's always at. We always use it at the island, put it right back in the drawer in the island. And I went to get it out. It wasn't there. I pulled everything out of the drawer because I was like, maybe it got buried. Same thing, because this is a drawer with scissors and all of our knives. Yeah.
00:04:53
Speaker
not there. So then I was like, maybe it's in this drawer, maybe it's here. I tore the whole kitchen apart. Like 20 minutes later, I call Anthony while he's on his trip. And I'm like, Hey, do you know where the wine opener is at? And he was like, it should be in the drawer at the island. And I was like, it's not. And he was like, Are you fucking kidding me? And I was like, No, it's not there. I just want a glass of wine.
00:05:15
Speaker
like I can't, I can't find it. And he was like, well, the other ones like in he has like a bar tool, like bag, it like unholes and like everything's in the bag. So he like told me where that was because I was like, I don't know where the other ones are. And he was like, Oh, it's in here whenever so I got it out.
00:05:31
Speaker
That one's in the Giorno. So the other day I was just like, can I please have my wine over her back please? I was just asking the house. Right, please just bring it back. Can you please just put it back? Because it's my one from Jerome, from Maynard Sellers. And I was like, please, I just want that one back. It's my favorite. Right, like if you could just please break it back. Yeah. Also, I mean, here's my thing.
00:06:00
Speaker
It's one thing to assume, and this is why I like...
00:06:06
Speaker
I don't know. It's one thing to assume if something, you can put it somewhere else on accident or something and not know. A month and a half and then to find it back in the top of the drawer like that. In the same spot that I always keep it? No. Yeah. There's no excuse for that. I'll send you the picture in our chat because I took a picture of it and I sent it to Anthony and I just said, excuse me. And he was like, are you kidding me? And I was like, no. I opened the drawer to get incense and it was sitting on top.
00:06:34
Speaker
He was like, there's no way we overlooked it. And I was like, no, I pulled everything out because he's

Setting Up Your Kitchen Altar

00:06:39
Speaker
been looking for it for this past month too. Because I was like, maybe I left it at the fireplace. Maybe I dropped it under the couch when I was lighting the incense. Maybe I put it on the bookshelf where I have an incense holder. We looked literally everywhere and then it was just there. Yeah, there's no explanation for that. Yeah. And then with the wine opener, it's not like you're going to find it any other place besides the kitchen.
00:07:01
Speaker
No, and you know what, it's been, so the lighter has been missing for like a month and a half, which falls in line from the last time Anthony was gone for a work trip. So he was TDY, it went missing. He goes on a snowboard trip like a month and a half later, it reappears and the wine thing goes missing. Yeah. When is he next set to leave? Monday, tomorrow. Yeah, tomorrow. Well, so that-
00:07:29
Speaker
Today is Saturday for you. Like I don't know, it's Monday. So basically, here's my thing. If it comes back. If it comes back on Monday, I expect a full report. Well, so I have a EBP recorder that's also in the drawer in there, in the instance drawer.
00:07:54
Speaker
where the lighter thing was, and Anthony was like, what if the ghost was like, hey, I'm trying to get you to turn this on. And I was like, what if we turned it on, and it just played this huge message, like, hey, next time you're at this store, can you make it? And he was like, I really like this one incense that you burned. Could you burn that one instead? Right, yeah. The other one really messes with my allergies. Well, you could just steer clear from whatever. Yeah.
00:08:22
Speaker
More frankincense, please. Thank you. Yeah, so I'm hoping that the lion opener turns back up soon, but we'll see. My chair's like extra squeaky today, too. Oh, it's OK. Well, mine, when I move, it sounds like I'm farting, so it's OK. I promise I'm not. You can just ignore our sounds. I'm going to get the little booties for my chairs.
00:08:53
Speaker
Oh, geez. Well, anyway, so what are we talking about today? Kitchen Witchery. Yes. I'm so excited for this episode. Me too.
00:09:03
Speaker
This, so just, I mean, we've already said it like in the intro, but this is the first episode of our witch, witch series. The purpose of the series is to take a closer look at each of the more popular types of witch classifications that are out there. The series is in no way meant to encompass every classification. And if there's a classification that we don't discuss in the series, then let us know if you want us to cover it, or if you have information you want to share about one of the things that we do talk about like kitchen witchery,
00:09:33
Speaker
Let us know and we can bring that up in our next episode too. And also we're not going to be doing them in a row. So while it is a series, they won't be like back to back. There'll be episodes in between some of the Witch Witch episodes. Yeah, you'll just get sprinkles here and there. Yeah. Yeah. Because we don't want to, I don't know.
00:09:54
Speaker
I don't feel like it would be boring, but we don't want to overload you with all the different types of witchcraft when we can just do a little bit here and there and give you other stuff in between. Absolutely.

Integrating Moon Phases and Ingredients

00:10:06
Speaker
So with kitchen witchery, kitchen witch is basically an informal term for a witch who emphasizes cooking, food, and mealtimes into her magical practice.
00:10:18
Speaker
They're a type of witch that creates most of their magic within the hearth in the home. And so they'll work with herbs, putting intentional magic within their meals, and they know that everything carries energy.
00:10:29
Speaker
And a fun fact that I found on the Good Witch Kitchen is that in ancient Greece, the word for cook, butcher, and priest was the same. It was magiros, which I could be saying that wrong, but who knows. It shares the same etymological root as the word magic. And that was a quote that she had on her, it's like a kitchen witch blog, by Michael Pollan.
00:10:54
Speaker
I love that quote so much. I think it's cute and just the fact that it has all the same root. I just love it.
00:11:03
Speaker
But also, how confusing would that be if someone's like, I need a majeros? And you're like, the cook, the butcher, or the priest? And then you send the wrong thing. You send the butcher, and they just needed a priest. Right. Like, they really needed the butcher, and you send the priest, and they're like, I'm just trying to kill this pig. I'm trying to get this cow. Like, what's happening? Yeah. Are you going to pray or not? I'm confused.
00:11:33
Speaker
Are you like a butcher and a priest? Are you gonna pray over it and then butcher it? The aim of Kitchen Witchcraft is to move energy and to help you manifest your intentions through food.
00:11:52
Speaker
But one thing to remember is that kitchen witchery doesn't just involve the food and cooking, baking, and making homemade items. They can also be linked to home routines and home protection and cleansing.
00:12:04
Speaker
The magic is weaved into domestic tasks with intention and purpose. The kitchen is the hearth and the heart of the home and many modern households. So when you're having gatherings, many people tend to hang out in the kitchen, whether that is planned or not. And so that's kind of why it's linked back to the kitchen and the hearth because that's where you cook the food within the fire.
00:12:27
Speaker
And I also think that it's so weird to me. This is something that Anthony and I noticed years and years ago because we've always hosted at our house. But every time, no matter where we try to set up a different space for people to hang out in, they always end up just hanging out in the kitchen.
00:12:46
Speaker
We love our friends, but sometimes when we're trying to prepare food and everybody's in the kitchen, you're like, can you move please? Can you move please? It really does feel that way. I miss our old house because our kitchen was set up in a better way to where it was easier to hang out in the kitchen. Now our kitchen is a galley kitchen and it sucks because
00:13:10
Speaker
I mean, it's small and it's long. But even so, when we first moved in, we first got our household goods. One of my friends

Magical Properties of Spices

00:13:19
Speaker
came over and the intention was to have her help us unpack. She was like, oh yeah, I'll come and help you unpack. We unpacked nothing. We drank and sat on the floor of our kitchen the entire night. And I'm like, we had a couch and everything. We didn't even go in the living room for hardly any time at all.
00:13:35
Speaker
literally sat on the floor of my kitchen and drank eight snacks.
00:13:41
Speaker
Our kitchen is like we have a pretty big space, but we have an island in the direct center like lengthwise in our kitchen. So like the stove and the sink are like on one side and then the refrigerator and the pantry are on the other side. So when we are trying to like cook with people over and everyone's in the kitchen, it's constantly us like weaving in and out to like get into the fridge or the pantry and then back over to the stove or the sink and it's a pain.
00:14:09
Speaker
put them to work. If you're gonna be in the kitchen, you're gonna have to help. Hand me that. Let them saute what we have on the stove. Well, I'm always like, put this in the fridge. Give me this out of the fridge. Can you get in the pantry? Because you're in my way. Right? Yeah.
00:14:27
Speaker
I was like, get out of my kitchen. So when you look at how kitchen witchery is practiced, I just want to note to start, while if you have the time and you want to practice all of these things consistently, that's great, but it doesn't make you any more or less of a kitchen witch to practice all or

Household Magic: Everyday Items

00:14:48
Speaker
just practice one or two things.
00:14:49
Speaker
For someone just starting out, I would highly suggest just choosing like maybe one or two of these items to practice and really like get a feel for kitchen witchcraft. By perfecting one or two of these practices first, you'll be able to like build your intuitive guidance when you're working with kitchen magic. Absolutely. And you know, one of the things that I've read a lot when it comes to kitchen witchery is they view cooking and just
00:15:15
Speaker
anything involving the hearth and the home as a sacred art. So oftentimes kitchen witches work intuitively instead of ritualistically anyway. So this means that they may not be able to dedicate specific time and resources to a ceremony, but they work intuitively to find magic in their everyday life. But it's something that you might not even consider like magic until you understand fully what it is. Yeah.
00:15:41
Speaker
Cooking itself is magic, so you should be cooking with intention. The act of cooking at its core, if you really think about it, is alchemy. So alchemy cooking is transformational. But it can also be looked at as a manifestation, especially when you're using your intuition to guide you through the preparations.
00:16:00
Speaker
through like recipe building and through like the cooking process itself. Like you're basically manifesting that item into being. Mm hmm. Absolutely. And it's all about imbuing intention and will into your dishes or anything that you do. So preparing something with your own hands lends to a sacredness of the meal.
00:16:21
Speaker
And it can also change the way you view food as well because you're taking time for the preparation and consumption, making sure that you're putting that intention into your food instead of just focusing on food as sustenance because it's not. It can be something so magical if you let it.
00:16:38
Speaker
It can.

Deities of the Hearth and Home

00:16:39
Speaker
And even as someone who's learning herbalism, using a lot of these things also have healing properties, they have preventative properties, vitamins, and just all kinds of things in them. Whereas instead of just eating this food, now you're eating something that's changing something in you, whether it be like
00:17:00
Speaker
healing you or giving you nutrients. So I feel like that's something that's a big one, especially when you start looking at correspondences and herbal properties and stuff like that. Because I know that is one of the things, since I've been doing the Herbal Academy, now when I'm cooking things and I'm like, I kind of want to add this, I'll look at the Materia Medica for that to see what is it also used for? What does it help? What are some of the more popular ways to use it? Or what are the more effective ways to use it?
00:17:29
Speaker
Something that you can do is build an altar, like build a kitchen altar, and for this you would just create a place within your kitchen that acts as your dedicated kitchen altar, and this can be a shelf, it could be the ledge on the back of your stove, it could be a cabinet if you don't want it out in the open, or even just like a section of your counter.
00:17:49
Speaker
You would just add items to the altar that reflect what you want your craft to be. Use correspondences that tie into your practice. And you can even place items that you use specifically for your practice, like a particular wooden spoon or a certain knife. Maybe you have a specific cutting board that you use. Your mortar and pestle. If you have one, just anything that you use specifically for kitchen witchcraft, you could put that in your altar.
00:18:14
Speaker
Yeah and you can even do like a statue of a home or hearth goddess and we're going to talk a little bit more of some examples of those later. A cauldron or a candle even and something you can also do is to display the herbs you use in decorative jars.

Keeping it Simple: Encouragement for Beginners

00:18:29
Speaker
This is obviously not like a requirement and depending on the space that you have or
00:18:36
Speaker
the resources that you have, this is not a necessity, but also keeping fresh vegetables and herbs all year long if that's something that you have the ability to do. This would be great to add to any sort of altar that you put up in your kitchen.
00:18:51
Speaker
A tip that I also came across on, and I believe this was also from the, I think it was the Good Witch kitchen, she suggested that if you have a kitchen altar on your counter to place it on a tray or in a baking sheet or even on a plate, so that if you need to move it so that you have more space for like food preparations or something, you can easily just like pick it up and move it instead of having to like collect all your things and move them somewhere else.
00:19:18
Speaker
That's a really good tip. I haven't thought about that. Honestly, that could work for anywhere that you keep your altar. If it's something that you need to put away or maybe it's in a space where you might need to move it frequently, put it on some decorative tray so you can just pick it up and move it.
00:19:37
Speaker
And another thing that's pretty important to really any sort of magical practice, but especially when it comes to kitchen witchery is keeping your magical space clean. And I was reading online, I thought this quote was pretty cute, but it said, physical cleanliness maintains spiritual cleanliness. And I love that. And I'm sure it was probably.
00:19:58
Speaker
Well, I'm not even going to get into that, but I was about to say like, you know, that quote cleanliness is next to godliness. I wonder if it's something that was stolen. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
00:20:09
Speaker
But so kitchen witches will often have a space that is devoid of clutter and chaos and doesn't just apply to the kitchen though. As the kitchen witch is the witch of the home and the hearth, this applies to the whole

Episode Conclusion and Further Engagement

00:20:21
Speaker
house. So it's important to make sure that you have physically and energetically cleansed frequently in order to maintain that energy in your space. This is something that like my kitchen is my sacred space. Like, you know, I,
00:20:37
Speaker
I make bread, I make noodles, I do herbal preparations and mix teas and do all kinds of stuff in my kitchen. So the kitchen, the rest of my house can be a complete disaster, but my kitchen will always be clean. Dishes will always be in the dishwasher until it's time for them to be put away. I can't even work in my kitchen until I've wiped my counters down and disinfected and all of these things. So I feel like that is 100% true. Yes, yeah.
00:21:07
Speaker
It's important. You can keep a handwritten recipe book which I absolutely love and I've been trying to find
00:21:16
Speaker
I guess like the right one to like put my family's recipes and stuff in. But for a kitchen witch, this could be the equivalent to having your grimoire. It's often good to try like a particular recipe out more than once before adding it to the book. Let's usually like suggest it that way. But something that I do with like my herbal preparations is I also keep a book that I hand write everything that I'm doing, what the properties are for the herbs, like what I'm trying to use them for.
00:21:43
Speaker
And then try the recipe out and if I don't like it or I want to tweak it, I put those notes in there so that I can see my process from start to finish, from my first attempt to the final, this is it. It lets me see that process and understand why I used certain things over other things. And I do that with all of my herbal creations, all of my teas,
00:22:05
Speaker
any of it. It's all in this little yellow notebook that I bought. That is really cute. I love that. I need to do more of that because I am one of those people, I guess I'm just chaotic when it comes to... Here's my thing. I could see, I guess if you're classifying the kitchen, which is somebody who is the home and the hearth, I could see maybe being classified as that, but I'm not super comfortable in the kitchen. I don't really enjoy being in the kitchen unless I feel
00:22:35
Speaker
drawn to do something in there. You know what I mean? Yeah, I thrive in the kitchen. Everything else, I'm like, I don't know. In the kitchen, I'm like, get out of my space. And I'm just like, I will clean everything for you if you feel good for me. Yeah, I know.
00:22:51
Speaker
I'm not the biggest fan of it, but maybe I would be more of a fan of it if I took the time to get excited about the things that I do in the kitchen. I'll find recipes online and I'm like, okay, I really want to make this. I never write it down. I have so many screenshots in my phone and I've tweaked things so many times. If I'm like, oh, I don't have that, I'll just add this instead. And then I never make it again because I'm like, well, what did I add to it?
00:23:19
Speaker
Like I have no clue because I'm so chaotic in the kitchen. Well, and that's, I'm trying to, I want to find a book, like a recipe book that I can hand write them in, but oddly enough, that's really hard to find. Cause I want it kind of set up. I'll probably just end up creating one on Canva or something, but cause I want it set up to where I can have like write in my ingredients and then write in the recipe and like little notes and stuff. I don't want to have to just have a blank page and figure it out on my own because I don't want to do that. So.
00:23:49
Speaker
We run into that a lot when it comes to food recipes. Like I'm very meticulous about my herbal stuff. It's all written down because it helps me like understand my process of why I'm doing things. Sometimes I'll just be like, tonight I want to make this and I'll open the fridge and just start pulling out random things. And it'll end up being like, there have been so many times that we have had something that we're like, Oh my God, I would eat this a million times over. But I, it was just one of those that I was like, what's in our fridge? Throw it all in a pot.
00:24:18
Speaker
brain dump it. And now I'm like, I don't have no clue what I put in that thing. Right. It's just made with love. Here you go. Yeah. Enjoy. Yeah. I do that frequently. And I'm like, I don't know how you made this. I'm like, so you should make this again. And then I'll try and I'm like, it doesn't taste anything like it. No, it's never the same.
00:24:39
Speaker
And then I get frustrated and I'm like, well, I hate cooking anyway. So why did you have me here? The only time I like cooking is like, if I'm excited about a recipe or if I'm doing something specific to like a sabbat.
00:24:53
Speaker
That's the only time I really enjoy cooking. I love it. It's like a time to just slow down for me, like get in the kitchen and just slow down and work with ingredients and, you know, make something delicious out of it or something like healing out of it. I don't know. It's like the one place that I'm like.
00:25:15
Speaker
I thrive over here. Yes. Another thing that you can do if you want to get more involved into kitchen witchery or understand more how it's practiced is
00:25:27
Speaker
Using sieves, sifters, and colanders or strainers, depending on where you live in the world, you might call it something different in protection. I didn't know this until I was starting to research this, but sieves, sifters, and colanders can be hung to aid in protection. The reason is because they diffuse energy in the holes that they have. That's why people will hang them on their wall.
00:25:51
Speaker
That's really cool. I've never heard that. I hadn't either and I'm just like, oh, this is really cool though. That is really cool. And also something that I found is certain metals can add to certain benefits in the kitchen. So copper in general has a loving energy that can be infused in food. And iron is something that
00:26:13
Speaker
Oftentimes you'll see in kitchens, whether that be on like trivets or in pans. So trivets, just in case anyone doesn't know what they are, they're used for hot things. So it's something that you would put in between like your hot pan and like a table or a countertop. It essentially protects
00:26:30
Speaker
whatever you're putting a hot pan on from something that could be damaged from it. It protects your table from something that it's hot. And so cast iron is something that's often used for trivets and pans, and cast iron carries protective energies. And something to know about cast iron is it's blind in its protection, which means that it will protect you from everything. It's not just going to protect from negative energy. It could protect from positive energy as well, so you just have to be careful with that.
00:26:57
Speaker
but it's full of symbolism and there's a lot of folklore tied especially to cast iron and just iron in general and this is something that we've talked about before with like hanging iron horseshoes and things like that by your door but also outside of metals certain shapes can
00:27:14
Speaker
be used in your energy in your kitchen depending on you know what you're trying to draw in. And so for instance if you have a trivet in the shape of a heart, hearts bring protection and love. Oftentimes trivets will also be in the shape of like a bird or have some sort of bird scenery on them and those can bring about creativity and freedom. So you can get really creative
00:27:38
Speaker
Essentially just that word. But you can get really creative with how you want to work in your kitchen based on the type of metals you bring in and the shapes of the things that you're bringing in. And I thought that was pretty interesting. With the shapes too, this is something that you can do in your actual food. Putting your herbs in in that shape, like making a heart in the food or stirring it into it. If you like bake, you know, putting the little design on the food itself too.
00:28:07
Speaker
Yes. So you can also practice kitchen rituals, which we talked about earlier, most of the time when you practice kitchen magic, it's not really like you don't practice it in a ritualistic way. But again, I feel like I'm like fangirling over this lady because I'm going to like bring her up again. But Kristin Sigolini of Good Witch Kitchen
00:28:31
Speaker
which is in the show notes, wrote out some really simple kitchen witch rituals that are tied to the moon phases. And they're pretty easy for just about anyone, like anyone could use them as a starting point. I highly recommend trying them or even just using them as a basis to start building your own kitchen rituals.
00:28:51
Speaker
And one of them includes making a chocolate fudge for self-compassion. That includes rose petals, which I absolutely love. They are one of my kitchen favorites. And that recipe I saved because I was like, this sounds delicious. And it looked so pretty. She decorated the top of the fudge with the little rose petals. It was so precious. Oh, I love that. Yeah. I'm going to have to go and check that out.
00:29:16
Speaker
maybe it'll help me get more comfortable and happy in the kitchen. And I think too, I will say at our last, the last house we moved from, I loved our kitchen so much. I spent a lot more time in the kitchen. With this kitchen, it feels like I'm in a dungeon because there's no natural light. It's just, it's not a very nice kitchen, but you know, military housing, you have to suffer through what you have to suffer through. But maybe if I incorporated something like this,
00:29:45
Speaker
I, you know, would learn to love my kitchen more. So yeah, when I will say to you, like I was looking through all the different ones that she had on there. And I don't remember exactly what the reasoning was behind this one in particular. But she used like, it was like super simple, right? Like you took the eggs and you could use food coloring or whatever to dye your eggshells before you prepare them so that you're using color correspondences in making your breakfast or in
00:30:12
Speaker
baking if you're using eggs in it or like drawing runes or sigils on the eggshells before you cook with them, like imbuing them with the energy and the protection and the love or whatever your correspondences are. Some of the stuff in there was like, here's a recipe and make this one thing. And some of it was something simple like that, that literally, like I said, anyone could do. I love that. Another amazing thing that you can do
00:30:38
Speaker
if you are interested in practicing kitchen witchery is staying within the season. So this is
00:30:45
Speaker
really important if this is something that you can do. And that is to work with what is seasonally available to you. So trying to shop local when and if you can, eating whole foods when and if you can, and trying to live sustainably, being kinder to the earth. These are all things that can help make you a better kitchen witch. But here's the thing, you don't have to do these things. Like if that is not
00:31:12
Speaker
reasonable for you during whatever time or season of your life, then that's totally fine as well. But this is something that can help you have a closer connection with the things that you do in the kitchen because you're bringing in fresh things that are seasonally available and you're understanding women's the best time of year to use these certain things, and that's very important. Don't think of it as like, oh, well, I can't practice kitchen witchery because of this. That is not the point of this,
00:31:43
Speaker
But also something that is very important is spending time in your kitchen, connecting with the ingredients that you use on a regular basis, and getting to know what you already have on hand. So like Tiffany had mentioned already, when it comes to kitchen witchery, you don't have to go out and buy anything. You can use literally what you have in your kitchen right now. And if you think about it, the ingredients that you use
00:32:04
Speaker
that you grab for on a day-to-day basis, whether it be paprika or chili powder or garlic, whatever, all of these things already have magical correspondences to them. So if you are already reaching for these things, even if they're in just a powdered form and they're not fresh by any means at all, connecting with the ingredients that you grab already on hand,
00:32:24
Speaker
is so important. So whatever you use normally whenever you're like, okay, I'm just going to fry up some chicken. Look at all those ingredients and then look at the correspondences of those ingredients and that will help you get more connected with your kitchen and what you have going on. Some other things that you can do are to create a summer pot, which we've talked about multiple times on the podcast.
00:32:48
Speaker
work with or grow your own herbs, blend your own teas, which is one of my favorite things to do in the kitchen, and work with the phases of the moon or the days of the week using color correspondences, really just anything to do with the kitchen in general. Don't overcomplicate it. I feel like we say that a lot.
00:33:06
Speaker
When you overcomplicate it, then that's when it starts to feel like a chore to do it or you're just like, I don't know, I can't do this thing. You already do these things. You already cook food. If you drink tea and you like to blend your own teas, you're already doing these things. So don't make it any harder than what it should be. And then I know we've talked a lot about just the kitchen in general, but as we said before, the kitchen which encompasses
00:33:31
Speaker
every part of your home, not just the kitchen. So there's also things that you could do to help you practice kitchen witchery that don't even include the kitchen at all. So placing crystals around your home to create a peaceful energy, leaving a broom by your door for protection, anything like that can also be or can help you in your practice to become a kitchen witch if that's something that you're interested in. So some items that are kind of essential for kitchen witchery
00:33:59
Speaker
One of the biggest ones that I feel like people overlook so much is spices. So while many of our listeners are sure to already know this, for those that don't, your spice cabinet is inherently magical. And most of our episodes discuss many of these as correspondences. But just a couple of examples would be if you have rose petals that maybe you use in teas. These are good for self-love, for intuition, for positive energy, anti-anxiety,
00:34:28
Speaker
It's considered an aphrodisiac and it has ties to the heart in herbalism and it's often found in recipes to cure heartache in herbalism, which I think is one of the cutest things ever.
00:34:39
Speaker
Rosemary, this is a great substitute for any herb in any magical working. It's cleansing, it's used for strength, protection, invigoration, virtue, solar energy, it's tied to memory and the mind. And in herbalism, it's often used for respiratory relief, hair loss, dandruff, indigestion, as a mental stimulant for sore muscles and pain relief and stress relief.
00:35:04
Speaker
It also acts as a preservative and a pest repellent and as an air freshener. And then another one is basil. I included rosemary and basil because these two are usually found in just about anyone's spice cabinet. So basil is good for attracting, for prosperity or money, for purifying, protecting, banishing, anti-stress, balance, bonds, courage, clarity, friendship, grief.
00:35:32
Speaker
harmony, happiness, love, loyalty, luck, resilience, and vitality. And in herbalism, it's used as a mood and spirit uplifter, which is just precious, and for digestive support as an anti-inflammatory, and it has been used to treat a ton of various elements throughout all of herbalism, basically. Another essential of our kitchen witchery is just you, your own person.
00:35:57
Speaker
Kitchen witchery is that simple, right? You just have to be there to do whatever you're already doing in your kitchen. Obviously you'll need items like pots and pans or baking dishes or knives or whatever, but kitchen witchery does not require elaborate or expensive things.
00:36:11
Speaker
Personally, something I feel like I can never have enough of is jars and bottles. If you buy something that comes in a glass jar or a bottle that is reusable, scrape those labels off, wash them, and then keep them. The further into your kitchen witchcraft journey that you go, the more jars that you're going to need. Anthony is like, do we really need this jar as he's trying to peel the label off for me? And I'm like, absolutely.
00:36:36
Speaker
Yeah, I need everything. Every jar, I need it. Thank you. These are great for storing your herbs and spices, surplus foods like soup or chili, or if you make your own broths, they're great for storing the excess in the fridge. For those that practice herbalism, they are also handy to have to create your tinctures, infused oils, fire cider, elderberry syrup, cordial shrubs, and honestly, pretty much everything.
00:37:00
Speaker
And they're all so great for making moonwater, so save all of them. Yes. Hoard all the jars. Yes. So I found this list on the Naturally Modern Life. And this is a blog from Lacey Burbage. And she lists tips that you might be a kitchen witch. And so I wanted to include these because I thought they were pretty cute. So the first one is, you personalize your space with great intention and care, curating a sense of home. You instantly know if a space resonates with you or not.
00:37:30
Speaker
You love to cook with whole organic foods as often as possible.
00:37:34
Speaker
You love to grow your own food or visit local markets often. You believe food is medicine. You often cook for others to express affection. You are always cooking or baking up a new recipe. You clean with natural ingredients and may make them too. You enchant ingredients before adding them to a dish. And a cup of tea is never just tea. It's a ritual, a brew. It's been magically prepared for some reason. And I read these all and I'm like, this is Tiffany.
00:38:12
Speaker
So there are a lot of deities that are linked to kitchen witchery. deities for kitchen witchery could be connected to food or family or nature or the arts or specific to the hearth and home but a few of these would be Hestia who is a Greek
00:38:31
Speaker
She's a Greek goddess and she rules over hearth, home, domesticity, family, and state. Her name translates to hearth and altar. In ancient Greece, temples were dedicated to Hestia and the inner hearth was constantly tended to. The aroma equivalent to this is Vesta, just as an FYI to those who are listening who like the Roman pantheon.
00:38:57
Speaker
Priapis, I think is how you say this one, is a Greek god and he's the god of vegetables. Juno, I like that. I'm really surprised too that we don't have a vegetable named after Priapis. I wonder if we do.
00:39:17
Speaker
Maybe. Maybe it's like the Greek word for like eggplant or something. Or like the catalog name. Botanicals all have a catalog name. So maybe there's one. Yeah, maybe there is. We'll have to Google search that. So Juno is the guardian of the home, marriage, and family and the protector of women. Pomona is a Roman goddess and she's the goddess of fruit trees, gardens, and orchards.
00:39:45
Speaker
Lorays in Roman mythology, Lorays are benevolent spirits of the home and the hearth, and they dwelled under the hearth in the household, and they were depicted as either a snake or a lizard. And then a fun fact about this, you can still see Lorays on ancient altars in Pompeii. Caridwen is a Welsh goddess, and she presides over the cauldron of knowledge, inspiration, and transformation.
00:40:13
Speaker
Kalyak is a Scottish goddess. She's the old woman of winter, worshipped as a kitchen goddess because she watches over dormant seeds through the winter months, ensuring a bountiful harvest during the next growing season. That is so cute. I love it, yeah. Bridget is an Irish fertility goddess who is often pictured with a cauldron. And if you haven't listened to our in bulk,
00:40:41
Speaker
episode. Shame on you. No, I'm just joking. But we talked a lot about her and our in bulk episode. So go listen to it.
00:40:53
Speaker
Frigg is a Norse Germanic goddess of home and hearth. She is the wife of Odin and her domains also include marriage, fertility, motherhood, prophecy, and clairvoyance. Anna Perna is a Hindu goddess of food and nourishment. In one of her four hands she holds a golden vessel of porridge and in another a golden ladle. Okay, this one I have to think about.
00:41:18
Speaker
Yukimochi Nokam is a Japanese goddess who possesses food. Hathor is an Egyptian goddess who is known as the mother of food and the bringer of food. Demeter is a Greek goddess of harvest and agriculture. And then Adesia and Babesia are Roman goddesses. Adesia is the goddess of food who presides over banquets along with Babesia, the goddess of drink.
00:41:46
Speaker
Why would they name them something so close together? I would get them confused. I know. Yesterday or whatever day I was doing my notes, I was like, oh, I'm going to fuck this one up. And like, could you imagine like, if you were living during that time too, where they worshiped Adija and Babija, like constantly getting them confused and their names messed up? No. No. Also, lastly, I wanted to throw this in here because I read about this all the time and like,
00:42:15
Speaker
fantasy novels, but Brownies, they're from English and Scottish folklore. They're industrious fairies or hobgoblins. They're believed to inhabit houses and barns, but they're rarely seen. They're heard at night cleaning and doing housework, and they've been known to move things around. So I wonder, maybe you have a Brownie in your house. Maybe. Mr. Brownie, give me my things back, or Mrs. Brownie. Yeah, whichever one.
00:42:42
Speaker
But if any of this sounds familiar to you, it's probably because J.K. Rowling took the folklore of the brownie to create the House Elf and Harry Potter and one thing about
00:42:56
Speaker
I know Dobby. And Harry Potter, you know, if you gave them an article of clothing, they would be free. In English and Scottish folklore, if you gave a brownie a suit of clothes, he would put them on and vanish, never to return again. You gave me some clothes? Thanks. All you can think of is Dobby as a free elf. Dobby as a free elf.
00:43:22
Speaker
Dolby is free! So just some general tips. Keep your kitchen space clean and free of clutter. I know we've already talked about this, but this is so important when you're working kitchen magic.
00:43:38
Speaker
We've discussed this multiple times on the podcast too, not in just this episode. But as you cleanse and clear your space, open up your windows and sweep or push all the negative or stagnant energies out of your kitchen through your windows or if you have a sliding glass door or whatever.
00:43:55
Speaker
just open it up, push those energies out. When using a recipe, always read the recipe all the way through. I make this mistake so many times. So many times. I'll be like, oh, I'm just gonna start it. Don't look at it. And then like, you'll get halfway through and you're like, I didn't know I needed water. I didn't know I needed to separate my egg whites. So read it all the way through just to
00:44:16
Speaker
keep you from stressing out over things like that. Don't be afraid to alter the recipe either if you're feeling drawn to a different ingredient. So just trust your intuition and don't be afraid to make the recipe your own. Take your time and relax when you're in the kitchen creating, Samantha.
00:44:33
Speaker
You don't want to put stressful or negative energies into your kitchen creations. And then, as always, remember that there's no right or wrong way here. Work intuitively and with what calls to you. When you're using basic kitchen herbs and spices, they're generally safe for the vast majority of people, unless there's a weird allergy or something.
00:44:55
Speaker
Something that I do want to note though is that if you're working with plants as herbal preparations, we just ask that you please do your research. Make sure that there's no warnings or limitations or specified ways to use a medicinal herb before you cook with it or ingest it because sometimes that can be a little dangerous. Just make sure you always look up the ingredient
00:45:16
Speaker
An easy way to do this is just google Materia Medica and then the herb that you're using and it will tell you everything. What it's used for, what its properties are, what its energies are, and any warnings or don't use if you're pregnant or don't use for children. So just remember that when you're researching Materia Medica and then whatever the herb is will give you all of that information.
00:45:40
Speaker
So to end this episode, we wanted to list a few of our favorite ingredients that we tend to be drawn to in the kitchen. The first one for me is lavender. Lavender can be used to attract love, banishing harmful spirits, happiness, increasing intelligence, reducing stress, purification, and to help you sleep better. Basil we've already talked about already, so I'm not even going to go into that.
00:46:04
Speaker
The next one is mint. Ancient Greeks listed this herb as an ambiguous herb. So it's exciting sexually, but it prevents reproduction, supposedly never use it that way. I don't suggest you use that as your birth control. Me doubling down on mint.
00:46:23
Speaker
But it also helps to expel negative energy, it attracts love, it helps you overcome fears, and it awakens sexual desires and attracts money, but it can also help with healing and cleansing. But it's really great with tea. So you're going to have a lot of sex and become rich. No, I'm kidding. And then overcome all your fears. That's exactly why I use it. Just kidding.
00:46:47
Speaker
So next is Cinnamon. It provides a powerful boost to spells. It speeds up results. It helps with consecration, healing, home protection, love spells, energy, and anything to do with success. And Paprika. I use this in literally any time I cook chicken, I always throw in Paprika. I love it so much. But it boosts spellwork and it helps with energy, fidelity, and love.
00:47:14
Speaker
And we've talked about paprika before because for the longest time I thought it was just a decorative herb because my family would just, the only thing they ever kept paprika in the cupboard for was deviled eggs. So they would like make deviled eggs and then sprinkle a little paprika just for like color on the top.
00:47:35
Speaker
I never even knew that it had a flavor because my family never used it that way. And then Anthony and I, when we started experimenting like in the kitchen and cooking a lot more, we started using it in a lot of things. And I was like, man, I never knew, never knew this had flavor. Right. Yeah.
00:47:52
Speaker
And it's so delicious. It is. And then for some of my favorite ingredients, we've talked about three of them already, so I'm not going to go over them. But rose basil and rosemary are all ones that we've already discussed. Cinnamon is another one of my favorites, and Sam just went over it. But something that I do with cinnamon is that I add just a little dash of it into my coffee grounds every day before brewing it, and I let it infuse into my coffee. It is so nice.
00:48:20
Speaker
And then my last one is sage. So sage is used for wisdom, for good luck, prosperity, redemption, cleansing, home blessings, and longevity. In herbalism, sage is a powerhouse herb that's been used as far back as herbalism's inception for its health promotion and disease preventing properties. It's a top antioxidant herb
00:48:42
Speaker
and a preventative for degenerative diseases like diabetes, arthritis, cancer, heart disease, muscular degeneration, inflammatory bowel disease, osteoporosis, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease. It has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, and it's an excellent natural remedy for fungal, viral, and bacteria infections.
00:49:05
Speaker
That's it. Just those couple of things. Just those things. Sage is amazing and I use it in tea. I cook with it. I use it in a ton of my herbal remedies. It can be used as a mouthwash. It can be used for infections in the mouth or gums. It's amazing. It is so good too. I love sage. Brown butter sage pasta is just phenomenal.
00:49:36
Speaker
It's so good. I love sage. It smells amazing. It tastes amazing. It's also an easy plant to grow if you want an easy herb that you can grow in your kitchen or in your yard during the growing season. This plant is super resilient and it comes back every year because not all herbs come back every year, but sage and thyme are ones that do. My lemon thyme survived the entire winter. It grew through snow. It's
00:50:04
Speaker
out of this plant is out of control. I have so much lemon thyme, I don't even know what to do with it. So if you want easy plants that you can grow on your own in your kitchen, like if you have a kitchen window with lots of natural light, or if you have a little space outside, highly suggest sage and thyme or lemon thyme because they are meant, be careful with mint because it takes over everything. Yeah, but yeah, yummy. Not angry.
00:50:31
Speaker
All right, that's it. That's it. I mean, obviously, there could be more to kitchen, which would be, but this should be a good starting point for you. And again, if you have any questions, concerns, suggestions, let us know. Yeah, we like we like getting feedback.
