Logistical Changes and Solo Episodes

00:01:18
Speaker
Also, as most of you probably already know, Sam is in the middle of moving from Japan back to the US. And if you've ever been through a military move, you know it's a long and stressful process.
00:01:31
Speaker
To keep things rolling and to avoid missing any episodes, we've been recording some of them solo or even separately and then piecing them together. Today is one of those days.
00:01:41
Speaker
So I'm going to be covering Ouija boards on my own. Next week's episode will have been recorded separately and then pieced together, but we'll be back together soon in another episode for you guys.
00:01:54
Speaker
We really appreciate all of your patience and support while Sam settles into this big move. So to kick it off, we're going to look at the history and background of Ouija boards.

Origins and Cultural Evolution of the Ouija Board

00:02:04
Speaker
The Ouija board emerged during the height of so the spiritualist movement in the mid-1800s, a time when people were fascinated by the idea of communicating with the dead, and it was originally called a talking board or a spirit board.
00:02:19
Speaker
Spiritualism, which began in the United States around the 1840s, was especially popular after the Civil War, when many sought comfort and connection with lost loved ones.
00:02:30
Speaker
Parlors across America hosted seances, table-turning sessions, and automatic writing experiments as both entertainment and sincere spiritual exploration.
00:02:41
Speaker
In 1891, Elijah Bond patented what would become known as the Ouija board in collaboration with Charles Kennard. The design featured the alphabet, numbers, and the words yes, no, and goodbye, with a small heart-shaped planchette to spell out messages.
00:03:00
Speaker
The Kennard Novelty Company began marketing it as a mysterious talking board, and a wholesome family parlor game rather than a spiritual tool. Its mass production and catchy advertisement quickly turned it into a cultural craze, accessible, intriguing, and easy to use without a trained medium.
00:03:19
Speaker
Bond claimed that his sister-in-law, Helen Peters, was a strong medium, and it was her who convinced the U.S. Patent Office that the board was legitimate, granting them approval from the U.S. Patent Office's board and the federal government.
00:03:34
Speaker
The Ouija board also is the only patented board game to outsell Monopoly in a given year as it was marketed both as a mystical tool for communicating with spirits and a wholesome form of amusement for the whole family.
00:03:47
Speaker
And if we really want to look a little further into its history, it would also be important to mention William and Isaac Fold. William Fold both worked for and invested in the Kennard Novelty Company. And when Kennard decided to cash out, William gained full control and continued to expand and produce more Ouija boards in more territories.
00:04:09
Speaker
But not before he cut his own brother, Isaac, out of the equation, leading to a 96-year feud between these two sides of the family and to numerous lawsuits.
00:04:21
Speaker
William decided to build a new warehouse at Harford Avenue in Baltimore, stating that the Ouija board itself claimed that he needed to do so. William would then suffer a fatal accident while overseeing the installation of a flag at the warehouse.
00:04:37
Speaker
An iron railing gave way and he fell off the roof of the building where one of his ribs broke and pierced his heart. On his deathbed, he made his children promise never to sell the Ouija board out of the family, though four decades later they did sell it to the Parker brothers, where it was then moved to the Salem, Massachusetts headquarters and sold two million boards.
00:04:58
Speaker
Despite being marketed as a game, the board was also widely used in seance settings, particularly among middle and upper class Victorians fascinated by death, mysticism, and science's boundaries.
00:05:12
Speaker
Spiritualists saw it as a modern, more efficient tool for spirit communication. something that bridged science and the supernatural. While some considered it a harmless curiosity, religious leaders and skeptics raised early concerns, calling it deceitful or spiritually dangerous.
00:05:30
Speaker
Throughout the early 20th century, the Ouija board maintained its popularity as both entertainment and a tool for spirit communication. However, by the mid-1900s, especially following the rise of horror films and media portrayals like The Exorcist in 1973, it took on a much darker reputation.
00:05:50
Speaker
What was once a light-hearted pastime became associated with demonic possession, malevolent spirits, and forbidden magic. This shift in perception transformed the Ouija board from a parlor novelty into a cultural symbol for the occult, feared, misunderstood, and endlessly intriguing.
00:06:10
Speaker
But when we look at pop culture, we see many references to the Ouija board. So Norman Rockwell painted a well-dressed suitor and young woman with their chairs pulled face-to-face playing with a Ouija board for the cover of the Saturday Evening Post in

Scientific Explanation: The Idiomotor Effect

00:06:25
Speaker
1920. And while it has been referenced in numerous mediums across pop culture, I think it's also important to mention that the Ouija board was also used in a study at the University of British Columbia, with results showing that the board does actually work through the idiomotor effects that is tied to the influence of unconscious mind on muscle movement that was originally identified by Sigmund Freud's theory of the unconscious mind.
00:06:49
Speaker
But that's like a whole different rabbit hole to go down, and that's not our focus today. The Ouija board story goes beyond parlor fun, and it's tied to humanity's search for answers about life, death, and the unknown, as well as the rise of psychology and neuroscience.
00:07:05
Speaker
In the 19th century, death was an everyday reality. shaping people's openness to spiritual communication and fascination with tools like the Ouija board. If we look at it from like a cultural impact and an occult connection realm, the Ouija board's roots remain deeply entwined with the spiritualist movement that birthed it.
00:07:25
Speaker
Early mediums used it as a tool for channeling messages from spirits, believing that it provided an easier and more direct method of communication than a traditional trance work or table wrapping.
00:07:36
Speaker
As the decades passed, it found a home in broader occult circles, particularly within 20th century practices influenced by ceremonial magic, theosophy, and later, modern witchcraft movements.
00:07:49
Speaker
What began as a parlor novelty and evolved into a legitimate tool of divination and spirit work for those who viewed it through a magical lens. In contemporary witchcraft and occultism, the Ouija board, which is often referred to as a spirit board, is seen as one of the many ways to access spiritual insight.
00:08:07
Speaker
Some practitioners use it alongside pendulums, scrying mirrors, or tarot cards to communicate with ancestors, guides, or the subconscious mind. Others view it symbolically as a mirror of one's intention rather than a literal line to the dead.
00:08:22
Speaker
Its continued use reflects the adaptability of divinatory tools within magical traditions, where meaning often depends on the practitioner's belief and intent.
00:08:32
Speaker
The Ouija board's modern reputation owes much to pop culture, especially horror films, so as I mentioned earlier, its turning point came with The Exorcist in 1973. where the board itself was depicted as a gateway to demonic possession.
00:08:49
Speaker
This portrayal sparked widespread fear and moral panic, cementing its image as a dangerous or cursed object. Since then, countless films, TV shows, and novels have used the Ouija board as shorthand for summoning evil forces.
00:09:04
Speaker
turning what was once a spiritual or social pastime into the symbol of horror and the unknown. And like we talk about this on the podcast all the time, right? This isn't a new concept. Anything tied to the occult, to paganism, to witchcraft,
00:09:20
Speaker
is often flipped in that lens where it's like, okay, what, you know, used to be seen as just a peaceful practice or belief or whatever is now evil tied to Satan, the devil, whatever.
00:09:34
Speaker
So nothing new there, right? Today, opinions on the Ouija board are sharply divided. For some, it's a powerful instrument of communication and self-reflection. It's an invitation to explore the unseen or tap into the subconscious mind.
00:09:48
Speaker
For others, especially those influenced by religious or pop culture fears, the Ouija board represents a spiritual risk. an open door that invites forces beyond one's

Mechanics and Aspects of the Ouija Board

00:09:59
Speaker
control.
00:09:59
Speaker
Whether viewed as a psychological tool, a ritual instrument, or a forbidden object, the Ouija board remains a powerful cultural symbol of humanity's ongoing fascination with the veil between the worlds.
00:10:13
Speaker
So let's talk about how a Ouija board works. And we're going to look at this both from the lens of just belief itself. And then we're also going to look at some of the science behind it. Because oddly enough, the Ouija board has been studied quite a bit. I know I only mentioned the British Columbia study, but there have been numerous studies done on the Ouija board, looking at it from a scientific lens to try to explain the phenomenon that is so Ouija board.
00:10:42
Speaker
So from a scientific perspective, the movement of the planchette can be explained by something called the idiomotor effect, which I mentioned earlier. This is a psychological phenomena where subtle unconscious muscle movements occur in response to thoughts, to expectations, or even just suggestions.
00:11:02
Speaker
And this is without the participant realizing that they're causing them. Essentially, when people place their hands on the planchette and focus on asking questions, Their subconscious minds can guide tiny movements that spell out coherent words or messages.
00:11:16
Speaker
No spirits required, just the fascinating power of human psychology and the influence of suggestion, group dynamics, and belief. In contrast, many spiritualist and occult practitioners believe the Ouija board serves as a conduit for communication beyond the physical world.
00:11:33
Speaker
Depending on one's worldview, that might mean speaking with spirits of the dead, ancestral guides, or energetic forces that respond through the planchette. In this view, the board acts as a symbolic bridge between realms.
00:11:47
Speaker
Its letters and numbers give form to messages that might otherwise go unheard. The participant's energy, intention, and openness are thought to influence the quality and clarity of communication.
00:12:01
Speaker
Regardless of belief, what makes the Ouija board so compelling is how deeply personal and emotional the experiences can be. Whether guided by subconscious cues or unseen energies, participants often report chills, emotional responses, or profound insights.
00:12:19
Speaker
This intersection of psychology and spirituality, where the mind's mysteries overlap with the metaphysical, helps explain why the Ouija board continues to evoke such powerful reactions.
00:12:31
Speaker
It's not just about how it works, but about what the experience means to the people using it. A reflection of curiosity, belief, and humanity's endearing desire to touch the

Famous Stories and Myths

00:12:43
Speaker
unknown.
00:12:43
Speaker
And of course, an object like this wouldn't exist without there being tons of lore. Like, the amount of lore surrounding the Ouija board in my research was insane. And I'm not even going to go into the full stories. I'm just going to give a couple of basically like recaps of a few of the most interesting ones that I found.
00:13:05
Speaker
So the first one is the Pearl Quran story. And this one happened in 1913. This is one of the earliest and most famous Ouija tales.
00:13:16
Speaker
And it comes from a St. Louis housewife named Pearl Curran, who claimed to have contacted the spirit of a 17th century English woman named Patience Worth through the board.
00:13:29
Speaker
Over the years, Curran dictated volumes of poetry and novels allegedly channeled from patients. And these are works that scholars still debate today.
00:13:39
Speaker
Her story helped shift the Ouija board's reputation from a party trick to a possible tool for channeling wisdom from beyond. The next one is known as the St. Louis Incident.
00:13:53
Speaker
And this one's from 1949. This chilling case inspired the exorcist. So a teenage boy identified by the pseudonym Roland Doe reportedly used a Ouija board to contact his deceased aunt.
00:14:09
Speaker
What followed were violent poltergeist phenomena that culminated in an exorcism that was performed by some Catholic priests. Media coverage of the case and its later adaptation into the 1973 film cemented the Ouija board's reputation as a potential gateway for dark forces.
00:14:29
Speaker
The next one is The Lost Ship of the Great Lakes. This one was from 1919. So basically, following the mysterious disappearance of the Carol A. Deering, family members reportedly turned to a Ouija board for answers.
00:14:43
Speaker
The board supposedly spelled out that the crew had been overtaken by pirates, which was a dramatic claim that newspapers eagerly repeated, adding to the board's growing mystique as a vessel for uncovering secrets.
00:14:57
Speaker
The next one is the Zozo phenomenon. And this actually Sam and I had kind of joked about the Zozo demon when we discussed this episode initially. But in modern paranormal lore, Zozo is a name said to appear frequently during Ouija sessions.
00:15:15
Speaker
And it's associated with a malevolent spirit or a trickster entity. Stories of encounters with Zozo circulate widely online, spawning documentaries, Reddit threads, and even a horror film called i Am Zozo from 2012.
00:15:30
Speaker
Whether viewed as a psychological suggestion, a collective myth, or genuine entity, the legend adds to the board's endearing eeriness. And looking through pop culture and media myths beyond The Exorcist, there's films like Ouija from 2014, Paranormal Activity from 2007, and countless TV episodes that have turned the board into a staple of supernatural storytelling.
00:15:57
Speaker
These portrayals amplify its darker lore, often showing it as a portal for demonic possession or malevolent hauntings. ensuring that its mystique and fear factor remain deeply embedded in the modern imagination.

Guidelines for Safe Ouija Board Use

00:16:12
Speaker
So while doing my research for this episode, I also came across this article by Jonathan Apria, where he collected several documents over the years that that were surrounding the topic of the Ouija board.
00:16:26
Speaker
And one of them was an interview with an ISU student named Matt Hancock, where Matt had used a Ouija board on more than one occasion with a group of friends.
00:16:38
Speaker
And in the interview, they were asking him to share things that you're not supposed to do when you use a Ouija board. And so I just found this interesting and figured you guys probably would too.
00:16:49
Speaker
But Matt shared that you're not supposed to ask Ouija board to protect death or when you'll die because it can cause you to die. You're never supposed to throw a board away, but rather burn it completely to rid yourself of both the board and any spirits.
00:17:05
Speaker
You're not supposed to play by yourself because you can be drawn into the spiritual world. You're never supposed to ask to talk to Satan or if Satan's spirit is the one that you're talking to. If the planchette moves off the board, you're supposed to immediately turn it upside down to clear yourself of any danger.
00:17:22
Speaker
If the planchette starts to just circle the board, you're supposed to turn it where the pointer is facing upside down and tap the board to clear the room of any evil spirits.
00:17:33
Speaker
You're never supposed to leave the board sitting out after you're done with it as that attracts spirits to the room, but rather you're supposed to put everything back in the box and store it away. And that there's this Catholic belief that you basically sell your soul to the devil the first time you play with a Ouija board.
00:17:51
Speaker
So with that in mind, let's talk about the safe and practical use of the Ouija board. So whether you see the Ouija board as a psychological tool or a spiritual one, approaching it with a sense of respect and mindfulness sets the tone for a safe experience.
00:18:07
Speaker
Intention matters, so treating the session lightly or mockingly often leads to an unsettling energy or miscommunication. whether that comes from the subconscious or something beyond.
00:18:20
Speaker
So you want to begin by grounding yourself and setting clear energetic or emotional boundaries. Some people center with a few deep breaths, light a candle, or visualize protective light around them and around their space.
00:18:33
Speaker
You might call upon protective deities, guides, or use herbs like rosemary or sage. The goal is to enter the experience focused and calm, not fearful, and having no chaotic energy.
00:18:48
Speaker
Keep your questions direct, kind, and specific. Avoid demanding or taunting language, as that can shift the tone of the session. Instead of prove you're real, try is there a message you'd like to share?
00:19:01
Speaker
It helps maintain control of the energy and encourages thoughtful interaction, whether you believe you're speaking to spirits or tapping into collective intuition. Always thank whatever presence participated and formally close the session.
00:19:15
Speaker
Move the planchette to goodbye and take a moment to clear your space, mentally and spiritually. Forgetting or refusing to close the session is one of the most common themes of Ouija horror stories, and symbolically, it leaves the conversation open-ended, energetically or psychologically.
00:19:32
Speaker
Don't use the board if you're in a fearful, angry, or unstable emotional state. Avoid testing or taunting entities, asking for evil or demonic communication, or playing while under the influence.
00:19:48
Speaker
These behaviors invite chaos, whether it means triggering subconscious fears or stirring unwanted spiritual attention. If the Ouija board feels too intense or uncertain, there's gentler ways to seek insight.
00:20:02
Speaker
Things like pendulums, tarot, or oracle cards, automatic writing, or even just simple meditation can offer guidance without opening a full communication channel. These tools allow for reflection and intention while maintaining a stronger sense of control and personal grounding.
00:20:19
Speaker
So to practice with a Ouija board, you're going to want to start with setting the space. Begin by choosing a calm, quiet environment where you won't be interrupted.
00:20:30
Speaker
Dim lighting, candles, or soft music can help set a focused and grounded atmosphere. Many practitioners like to create a circle of protection, whether that's visualizing a barrier of light, sprinkling salt, or simply setting the intention that only positive and respectful energies are welcome.
00:20:49
Speaker
Before you begin, cleanse the space physically and energetically. you can do things like burning herbs like rosemary or cedar. um You can ring a bell or even just opening a window to clear the air.
00:21:03
Speaker
Once your environment feels calm, take a few moments to center yourself through grounding or meditation, letting go of distractions and tensions. Traditionally, Ouija boards are best used with at least two people.
00:21:16
Speaker
The shared energy of a group often helps the planchette move more freely, and it creates a sense of mutual accountability and balance. It was kind of back and forth in my research on whether you can use a Ouija board alone. Some fully believe that a Ouija board should never be used by only one person.
00:21:36
Speaker
And there's copious reasons for this. Others believe that you can use it alone just as long as you're doing so appropriately, being respectful and following like the grounding and setting boundaries,
00:21:48
Speaker
etc So... I will leave that fully up to you. I have not practiced with a Ouija board, so I have no like personal experience with that. But as we always say, make sure you do some thorough research if this is something that you're wanting to jump into.
00:22:05
Speaker
Everyone present should share a common intention, respectful curiosity and openness, not fear or mockery. It's important that everyone participating feels emotionally steady and comfortable with the process.
00:22:19
Speaker
This collective energy helps shape the tone of the session. To start, you're going to place your fingertips lightly on the planchette. No pressure, no pushing.
00:22:30
Speaker
Start by asking a simple yes or no question to ease into communication and get a feel for how the board responds. Remember to be polite, patient, and specific with your wording.
00:22:42
Speaker
Questions like, is there anyone who wishes to speak with us tonight? Or, or do you have a message for someone here? are both open and non-confrontational, setting a cooperative tone for the beginning.
00:22:55
Speaker
From here, you should take turns asking questions so that everyone has a chance to participate and stay engaged. Keep a notepad or a voice recorder nearby to jot down letters, symbols, or words that come through.
00:23:08
Speaker
You might notice patterns later that make more sense in context. Throughout the session, stay aware of the energy in the room and within yourself. If things start to feel heavy, fearful, or simply just kind of like off, it's perfectly okay to stop, ground, and take a break.
00:23:26
Speaker
The goal is insight and connection, not discomfort and fear. When you're ready to end, thank whatever energy or collective intention that was present, then guide the planchette to goodbye to formally close the communication.
00:23:41
Speaker
this symbolic closure helps signal that the session has ended, both energetically and psychologically. Afterward, take time to ground. um It was recommended by multiple sources that I went to that you should drink a bunch of water after this. Not like c chug water, but you know hydrate yourself to stretch or to even like go outside and touch the earth and ground yourself if possible.
00:24:06
Speaker
And that you should cleanse your space once more. You might also clear the board with smoke or sound before you put it away. And just a few safety notes that I came across. As I mentioned earlier, tradition cautions against using the board alone, as group dynamics help balance energy and perspective.
00:24:24
Speaker
You should avoid asking for negative entities, issuing dares, or trying to provoke a reaction. And remember, whether the movement comes from spiritual communication or the ideomotor effect,
00:24:38
Speaker
The emotions and sensations that arise are very real. approach the board with the same respect that you would bring to any spiritual or psychological exploration, and always end in gratitude and

Exploring Mystery and the Human Desire to Understand

00:24:50
Speaker
grounding.
00:24:50
Speaker
And just some closing thoughts. As I've discussed throughout this episode, the Ouija board sits at a fascinating crossroads, part tool, part toy, and entirely shaped by the beliefs of those who use it For some, it's a doorway to deeper spiritual understanding or connection with the unseen.
00:25:10
Speaker
For others, it's simply a clever psychological mechanism guided by the subtle movements of the human mind. Whether you approach it from a place of faith or skepticism, what truly matters is the intention that you bring to it.
00:25:25
Speaker
Respect, mindfulness, and safety should always come first, because how you engage with the unknown says just as much about you as it does about whatever might answer back.
00:25:36
Speaker
At its core, the Ouija board is less about summoning spirits and more about exploring mystery, about the human desire to reach beyond the veil. to ask questions, and to seek meaning in the silence.
00:25:48
Speaker
And lastly, if you choose to work with the Ouija board, please make sure to do some thorough research and use it both with caution and respect. I've linked a kind of how-to article in our show notes by Wickstar that has a fantastic start-to-finish layout that could definitely get you started.
00:26:07
Speaker
But with that, there are copious resources out there that you could choose from. Just make sure that you proceed with caution. practice safely and remember to do so with respect.
00:26:18
Speaker
All you have to do is go on Google or YouTube and search like how to use a Ouija board because I did that just to see how many sources we could get. And there were so many. There's so many YouTube videos with step-by-steps.
00:26:31
