Introduction & Upcoming Transformers Release

00:00:10
Speaker
What's going on, listeners?
00:00:12
Speaker
Welcome back to Matt Goes to the Movies.
00:00:14
Speaker
You're here for another episode, and this time it's very specific what we're doing.
00:00:21
Speaker
Not that it's random, but coming up this week, we have the release of Transformers Rise of the Beast.
00:00:30
Speaker
Now, I am incredibly excited for this movie.
00:00:33
Speaker
I have tickets for actually this coming Thursday, the 7th,
00:00:38
Speaker
for a 4DX 3D showing.
00:00:41
Speaker
If for any reason listeners don't know what 4DX is, it's an interactive one where the seats move and there's mist and there's smoke.
00:00:50
Speaker
Really looking forward to it.
00:00:51
Speaker
I've gone to a couple of those for animated movies, movies,
00:00:55
Speaker
So really looking forward to going seeing Transformers Rise of the Beast in that format.
00:01:00
Speaker
I am super pumped for this movie, especially because I was a huge fan of Bumblebee.

Review Setup: Revisiting Transformers 2007

00:01:05
Speaker
I've done some reviews on the Transformers movies with my friend Harrison from The Basement Binge, the podcast that he hosts.
00:01:14
Speaker
But today I'm specifically going to be talking about the first Transformers movie that was released July 3rd in 2007 by Paramount Pictures.
00:01:25
Speaker
Now, before I talk about Transformers...
00:01:29
Speaker
I want to talk about another release from Paramount Pictures.
00:01:32
Speaker
And the reason I want to do that is because once again, Matt 360 has come through with a giveaway for listeners of this show.
00:01:42
Speaker
Now, that giveaway is for a brand new movie called Snag.
00:01:48
Speaker
Now, Snag is streaming right now on Redbox On Demand, and it is a gritty modern-day fairy tale that follows a lone wolf,
00:01:57
Speaker
who must rescue the love of his life from a dangerous criminal mob.
00:02:01
Speaker
With heart-pumping action and intense suspense, Snag will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.
00:02:08
Speaker
Don't miss out on this must-see movie and stream Snag instantly on Redbox today, rated R from Paramount Pictures.
00:02:15
Speaker
Now, here's the awesome thing.
00:02:17
Speaker
You can stream this from Redbox, but like I just said,
00:02:20
Speaker
Matt goes to the movies.
00:02:22
Speaker
Listeners have an opportunity to get a free copy of this movie digitally.
00:02:28
Speaker
So what you're going to do is when you're done listening to this review of transformers, you are going to check out the show notes.
00:02:35
Speaker
You're going to find out how you can enter and we will draw winners very, very soon.
00:02:39
Speaker
If you're a winner, we're going to send it to your social media profile and you will get that digital copy.
00:02:46
Speaker
So once again, thank you to Map360 for allowing us this opportunity for a giveaway.
00:02:52
Speaker
And thank you, all the listeners, for sticking with this show.

Exploring the Impact of Transformers 2007

00:02:58
Speaker
right.
00:02:58
Speaker
So getting back into, and I say getting back into, I say starting Transformers.
00:03:06
Speaker
You know, this movie, like I said, was released July 3rd, 2007.
00:03:10
Speaker
And if you were around then, when this first released, you know what a big deal this was.
00:03:18
Speaker
Like, this was huge for fans that we were getting a live-action Transformers movie directed by Michael Bay.
00:03:28
Speaker
Now...
00:03:29
Speaker
What I will say about this movie, and the reason I chose to review this movie, is it is such a far departure from the other things that we got from him in Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon, Age of Extinction, and The Last Night.
00:03:45
Speaker
Now, admittedly so, I actually like Age of Extinction.
00:03:50
Speaker
I understand that it is a train wreck, it's really, really bad, but for whatever reason...
00:03:55
Speaker
I just have fun with that movie.
00:03:57
Speaker
The other ones, Revenge of the Fallen, I like because it's so dumb that it just makes me chuckle.
00:04:04
Speaker
Dark of the Moon, I'm not really a fan of.
00:04:07
Speaker
And then The Last Knight, I think, is absolute trash.
00:04:11
Speaker
So not the biggest fan of this series and where they came from, but watching the original Transformers, and I watched this again last night, actually...

Movie Night & Film Analysis

00:04:23
Speaker
pretty cool.
00:04:24
Speaker
I set up my movie projector and screen outside, just, you know, sat outside with, you know, the citronella torches lit and just enjoyed the night and enjoyed an outdoor movie in my backyard.
00:04:38
Speaker
But
00:04:39
Speaker
What I like about this Transformers movie and rewatching it is a simple fact that it feels put together.
00:04:46
Speaker
It doesn't feel disjointed.
00:04:48
Speaker
It's funny.
00:04:49
Speaker
It has heart.
00:04:50
Speaker
The human characters are not annoying in this one.
00:04:54
Speaker
I, a lot of times last night was just laughing.
00:04:58
Speaker
The score in this movie is great.
00:05:02
Speaker
And it really makes me wonder what happens to Michael Bay.
00:05:06
Speaker
I know he gets a lot of hate, but he's done movies like Armageddon, Pain and Gain.
00:05:11
Speaker
I like the bad boy franchise one and two.
00:05:16
Speaker
You know.
00:05:19
Speaker
The Island, I like that movie a lot.
00:05:22
Speaker
But it just, I don't know why he gets so, the only way I guess to say it is Michael Bay-ish, in his subsequent movies.
00:05:33
Speaker
Because again, this movie here is two hours and 24 minutes long.
00:05:37
Speaker
Now with every Transformers movie except for this one, I can confidently say that 30 to 45 minutes of those other movies can be cut and it would improve it.
00:05:51
Speaker
That
00:05:53
Speaker
Dark of the Moon movie where they just keep flipping back and forth from day to night in Chicago being attacked is so unnecessary.
00:06:03
Speaker
It just drags the movie on.
00:06:06
Speaker
The last night feels like one big drag on.
00:06:09
Speaker
But each of those movies could be reduced by 30 to 40 minutes, not the original Transformers.

Character and Music Appreciation

00:06:16
Speaker
I feel it has really, really good, solid pacing.
00:06:20
Speaker
Again, an engaging story with good characters.
00:06:24
Speaker
This is where we're first introduced to Sam Witwicky, played by Shia LaBeouf, who I think, again, much like Michael Bay, is reserved in this movie.
00:06:34
Speaker
He's still funny and zany and quirky and a little over the top,
00:06:38
Speaker
but he's not a character of himself like he is in the subsequent movies.
00:06:43
Speaker
You have his relationship with Michaela played by Megan Fox, which I actually think develops really well.
00:06:49
Speaker
Your introduction to the Transformers, to the Decepticons, that first scene of Optimus transforming in front of Sam and the score playing.
00:06:59
Speaker
I love the score for this movie.
00:07:00
Speaker
The theme for the Transformers is so good.
00:07:03
Speaker
I get goosebumps.
00:07:04
Speaker
I got him last night watching this.
00:07:06
Speaker
It's just so well done.
00:07:09
Speaker
And again, the military, the focus on them, it feels paced and even where the subsequent movies, it's just there's too much human characters.
00:07:21
Speaker
I enjoy the designs of the robots.
00:07:23
Speaker
I feel for the most part, you can understand what's going on in the fights between them.
00:07:28
Speaker
That's what I really enjoy about this movie.
00:07:32
Speaker
And every movie after just loses the original charm of what this first movie brought to the screen.

Critique of Sequels & Closing Review

00:07:41
Speaker
And it's a shame because this was an absolute great starting point, regardless of what those movies brought in two, three, four, and five, uh, not specifically five, cause it was tanked at the box office.
00:07:56
Speaker
they just don't capture the same magic as the first one.
00:08:00
Speaker
Now they have some moments.
00:08:01
Speaker
Do not get me wrong.
00:08:03
Speaker
The forest fight and revenge of the fallen is really good.
00:08:07
Speaker
When optimist comes swooping in at the end and dark of the moon, um, and is just kind of like slicing through everybody.
00:08:15
Speaker
That seems really good.
00:08:16
Speaker
They have a really great emotional scene in revenge of the fallen where Sam tells his dad that he's got to go.
00:08:21
Speaker
And his dad saying, no, we'll all go together.
00:08:24
Speaker
That's actually really good acting.
00:08:26
Speaker
But those parts in those other movies are so few and far in between to just absolute nonsense in terms of comedy, in terms of shots, in terms of gratuitous shots of women.
00:08:42
Speaker
Not that this first movie doesn't have them, but it's just so much worse in these other movies.
00:08:49
Speaker
And again, like I said, it's a real shame because this first Transformers movie with the cast, obviously Peter Cullen is Optimus Prime.
00:08:56
Speaker
Hugo Weaving is the voice of Megatron is really good.
00:09:00
Speaker
The simple story of the AllSpark being on Earth before every single MacGuffin was somehow freaking on Earth, which is ridiculous.
00:09:08
Speaker
This just the runtime is very tight.
00:09:12
Speaker
Doesn't feel like anything is wasted.
00:09:16
Speaker
Great performances, great comedy, an amazing score.
00:09:21
Speaker
So if for any reason it's been a long time since you've watched the original Transformers movie,
00:09:28
Speaker
Man, I feel like now's the time to go back with this new release of Transformers Rise of the Beast coming up because it really might, to me, surprise a lot of people at how well put together this movie is, especially if it's been a while since you've seen it.
00:09:47
Speaker
So that's going to do it.
00:09:48
Speaker
This is just a quick recap of that movie.
00:09:52
Speaker
And I am going to do a popcorn time review here where I rate it out of five buckets.
00:09:56
Speaker
And for me, the first Transformers, it is not perfect, but it is highly enjoyable.
00:10:02
Speaker
I do give this four and a half buckets for the first movie.
00:10:06
Speaker
I actually really, really enjoy this.
00:10:08
Speaker
There's a few things that I don't like about it, but just a half a bucket off.
00:10:13
Speaker
So once again, check this movie out.
00:10:17
Speaker
I do not think listeners will be disappointed.
00:10:20
Speaker
So thank you so much for checking out this
