Intro

Speaker
Hello and welcome to Twinterested, your paranormal sidekicks. um Today is a very lovely Tiny Tales episode um and I'm going to be focusing on Woodman Point, a known haunted location in Perth, Western Australia.

Upcoming Ghost Hunt

00:00:22
Speaker
um So Katherine not with us today, so I'm Erin, I'll be Tiny Tailing you. Um, and yeah, I, I chose to do a bit of Tiny Tales episode so i could let you know that Katherine i are going to be doing a ghost hunt at this location. It's coming up pretty quick, um, but we're kind of excited about it.

History of Woodman Point

00:00:47
Speaker
And I thought, why not give you guys a bit of a introduction or like a show and tell of how, you know, um, how Woodman Point came to be, so to speak, in terms of like its history, um, and what it's used for now and why it's kind of, of interest to some people in the paranormal space. So yeah, I'll, I'll get right into it.
00:01:16
Speaker
Um, I can't remember what episode it is, but I was talking to Katherine I was like, be cool, you know, for you to share your Woodman Point, um you know, ghost story for this episode. And she was like, I'm pretty sure I shared it. And i was like, me too. i think we both kind of went into a bit of a story about um what we experienced at this location, because both of us did a ghost story.
00:01:45
Speaker
I wouldn't call it a ghost hunt, so to speak, but we went to like a night of exploration. It was like hosted by a medium or two mediums.
00:01:56
Speaker
And they kind of just shared personal insights that they got when we were walking around the site. And they also talked about some, they talked about some like historical ghost stories that, um that had been shared with them and that kind of thing. So yeah it was really opening. It was the first time we'd ever done something like that. And we would have been like in our early twenties doing that. Um,
00:02:24
Speaker
So yeah, it was really cool. It was also the first time we kind of experienced ah like some interesting paranormal stuff. And I think i'll I'll reshare like just a summary of what we experienced, but Anyway, I thought youll it's probably a good place to start, like with just

Quarantine Station and Spanish Flu

00:02:44
Speaker
the history. So let's get into the history of Woodman Point. So it's south of Perth City um in a suburb called Coogee.
00:02:54
Speaker
um And it was originally used for um a quarantine station. So it was a quarantine station specifically for the port of Fremantle, which another, you know, the second city of Perth, as they say. um So, yeah big port in Fremantle, big ships around 350 to 400 vessels, they say, were reported to have been quarantined during the time it was, you know, used as a quarantine station.
00:03:28
Speaker
and the ships would come through and they would check all the people on the boats for um yeah any sort of contagious diseases um and things like that because you know Australia is a big island as they say and we do take our quarantining pretty seriously um for any of you you know overseas international people check my cougar episode because you know that shit got hectic with quarantining and it's kind of interesting to look into anyway i digress um yeah so that was the purpose of the site so woodman point 1886 is when it officially started to be used as a quarantine station
00:04:15
Speaker
um And on that station, like on that site, it comprised of a few different main

Old Crematorium and Contagious Diseases

00:04:22
Speaker
buildings. There was the crematorium, which I read was believed to be one of the oldest in Australia. So that's kind of interesting.
00:04:31
Speaker
um And, you know, that's where the people who passed away from the contagious diseases were cremated. So, you know, respect to the people that died, unfortunately, of some of these awful diseases.
00:04:45
Speaker
um And there were also accommodations for the families of the patients and also the sort of doctors and nurses who worked there. I'm pretty sure some of them would have lived at the quarantine station because of the risk of, um you know, contracting the diseases and that kind of thing.
00:05:05
Speaker
So, yeah, there were accommodations for the patients. um their families and the nurses and doctors there. um And there was also an isolation hospital. So that was, of course, you know, there's going to be a hospital on site to treat the patients. um So, yeah, the main sort of diseases, like this is all going to come in. This is relevant, I swear to you. um It's just interesting to know what kind of contagious diseases were being treated on the site. So they say that it was mainly the Spanish flu, especially after World War One. That was a big, big thing that happened um like around the world. um There was also the measles, leprosy and scarlet fever, just to name a few. But they were like they were the main contagious diseases treated at Woodman Point Quarantine Center.
00:06:03
Speaker
So yeah, it's just um quite a unique site. And because there was the crematorium there, there were people who passed away and their bodies were cremated. We also have um a lot of history in terms of people coming in after World War So a lot of people coming through, um getting checked before coming back home.
00:06:28
Speaker
um And also a lot of immigration by boat and that kind of thing. um So yeah, a lot of interesting things happening on site. So that leads us leads us to believe, you know, why would people want to go ghost hunting here?
00:06:45
Speaker
Well, there's probably like a lot of residual energy from that time. So not like intelligent hauntings, but, you know, people suffering from illness. So, you know, maybe not so nice, like,
00:06:58
Speaker
heavy kind of energy. There might be intelligent hauntings, maybe um I'll get my nerd on, but like you can look at energies or entities of things that might enjoy um being around that sort of energy of people who are sick or who are passing away. um But then you also have ah the camaraderie that comes with places like this, so um yeah just a lot of respect to the nurses who worked on site. um And i didn't look into the history of people people who worked there who passed away, but we can sort of imagine that some of these doctors and nurses contracted the contagious diseases and maybe passed away as well. so
00:07:47
Speaker
I read an interesting fact actually, kudos, shout out to the Friends of Woodman Point Recreation Camp. um They noted that some of the nurses actually drew names out of a hat when they had to decide who cared for the people with the Spanish flu because they knew how like deadly, like how um contagious it can be and that it could have led to death. But I'm sure they did a great job.
00:08:12
Speaker
um You know, good intentions all around.

Woodman Point Recreation Area

00:08:16
Speaker
um Anyway, so the change in use, so it was used as a quarantine center, and then in 1982 they actually repurposed the site into a recreation camp, um which is kind of interesting. So, you know, we've gone from...
00:08:37
Speaker
A place where it's like quarantine, got a bit of a crematorium on the side, we got some hospital stuff and accommodation and then we're just going to be like recreation camp, school camps. So you can hire it out for school camps, it's still used.
00:08:53
Speaker
um by schools to this day. They hire the space out to schools and they have two or three nights, you know, at Woodman Point recreation site. um And I'm sure the location is beautiful. It is right near the beach. There's a nice sort of natural area to explore. And it probably comes with a, like, a lovely side of haunting as well. So this is why it's been chosen a ghost hunt site and that is why Katherine and I put up our hands and we're like we're gonna go to this we're gonna see what we can find um and the tour comes with ghost equipment um so that'll be really interesting if you haven't already check out our episode is it
00:09:43
Speaker
I don't even remember the name of it. How terrible is that? I can't even promote a past podcast episode. Have a look for last season's ghost hunting um episode where Katherine Nathan visited a an older silent site in Melbourne um because that is what we're planning to do for Woodman Point.
00:10:06
Speaker
um Yeah, we're planning on just sort of capturing a bit of our thoughts before we head to Woodman Point, and then we'll hopefully be able to capture some tidbits from our tour. But if not, we'll put the phones down and we'll give you a nice recap of am what we experienced on the ghost hunt.
00:10:28
Speaker
Yeah, I'm just having a ponder. So yeah, I guess I'm getting the Not the boring stuff, but the like formalities out of the way so we can jump right into the ghost hunt once we've been. But yeah, Woodman Point, it's a quarantine. It has been a quarantine station. Like that's the main use of the site, um has been the main use of the site. And it was recently, well, in 1982, that is when they repurposed it into a recreation camp site. Yeah.
00:10:58
Speaker
Um, but yeah, lots of history like on that area. it'll be really interesting to explore.

Erin's Paranormal Experiences

00:11:08
Speaker
Um, so in terms of sharing an actual ghost story, I won't, you know, it's not just a history lesson here, but the really interesting thing i experienced at the first ghost hunt we went to was
00:11:29
Speaker
I felt like I experienced symptoms of some of these contagious diseases. um And because I wasn't familiar with what could happen to you when you're in a haunted location, specifically investigating or hearing stories from mediums and ghosts.
00:11:47
Speaker
They weren't ghost hunters at the time. There were two mediums. But yeah, they were just talking about the history of the site. But they were kind of guiding us through um what other people had experienced there.
00:11:59
Speaker
So we were specifically sitting in what is now the kitchen area of the recreation um camp. So um it was right at the back of the site. So you had to walk through all the old sort of hospital bed rooms.
00:12:18
Speaker
um And then at the centre of the camp is like... a theatre room or like probably a recreation area where everyone just sort of gathers. It's like a large space or people might hold talks there or whatever. And then behind that building is the kitchen area and another recreation room.
00:12:38
Speaker
um So we're just sitting in this kitchen area and they were talking about the kind of patients that used to come through Um, and as they were talking, I remember just getting really foggy headed and I couldn't really focus on what was being said, but my jaw just started feeling really swollen and heavy. Like I couldn't talk. I was like, kept having to stretch my mouth out. Um,
00:13:05
Speaker
And then I was getting really tired, like the fatigue. I couldn't explain how much fatigue I had and it just wouldn't go away. i was like, oh my gosh. so yeah, big swollen jaw energy. And then, um yeah, i I couldn't move my mouth. So i remember like when we left that space, I was like, Katherine like I feel like I can't talk, like my mouth is so swollen and I can't remember what.
00:13:30
Speaker
um Let me have a quick Google. I wonder what illness that could have been, but it was really affirming when um the lady who was like doing the tour with this other guy was like, oh yeah, and these are the symptoms of this. I think it was scarlet fever.
00:13:51
Speaker
Um, yeah, she was like, and yeah, this is what kind of symptom, the kind of symptoms this person would experience if they had this illness. And this is the kind of experience this person would feel if they had this kind of illness. Um, and I remember being like, oh, that's really interesting. Cause that's exactly how I'm feeling.
00:14:08
Speaker
So that's the biggest thing that happened to me on that tour. was kind of creepy and like it went away as soon as I got home. But I remember me just being like, that was kind of fucking weird. um And Katherine has explained in another episode, she just randomly started limping. Like we were walking through the courtyard and she was like, I just feel like I have to limp. Like I'm just starting to limp a little bit.
00:14:34
Speaker
And about five minutes after she said that to me, like she literally was like, oh, no, wait, she was experiencing it and she thought she was crazy. So she didn't say anything.
00:14:49
Speaker
Then the lady on the tour said, oh, there's a man that is seen on the grounds who limps. And then Katherine like, you've got to be fucking kidding me. So then straight away, she was like, I know I sound like an idiot, but I i just started limping. And I was like, this is weird.
00:15:03
Speaker
I'm limping. Why am I limping? And then the lady said, oh, there's a man on the grounds that limps. So she was tapping into something too. so It wasn't so much scary, but it was like, that's a weird coincidence that that's what I'm feeling. And then that's what the person on the tour is saying.
00:15:19
Speaker
um And yeah, likewise with my swollen jaw and not being able talk clearly. i was like, that's weird. You've just explained that illness. And that's what I've been sitting here feeling this entire time. so It's interesting to think about what that could be.
00:15:35
Speaker
Is that a residual energy that certain people can pick up on? Is there an actual energy there saying, I want you to feel this? It's kind of fascinating. Um, So yeah, that's kind of like the spooky stuff. And then as a side to that, the tour was over and Katherine I were like, we'll just go to the bathroom because it's a long drive home after a long night.
00:15:59
Speaker
So we both went to the bathroom together because we were a bit freaked out, like not going to lie. There's like tales of seeing orbs of light and then there's also a woman in white, which I feel like is very, i feel like every haunted site has a woman in white.
00:16:11
Speaker
So maybe I'll do like a side podcast where I investigate women in white and what that could mean. Like, I wonder if that's like a protective energy on the site, or maybe that was one of the nurses who is like a beautiful spirit who's just like, yes, I protect you.
00:16:26
Speaker
um or that kind of thing. But you know, when you're in your twenties and it's your first ghost tour, you kind of just go women white, get fucked. This is terrifying. You know, um, with no regard to who that woman in white might be as a person who was a alive. So it's kind of funny.

Katherine's Encounter with a Limping Ghost

00:16:40
Speaker
Or is it you know like a demon veiling as a woman in white just to gain your trust and wants to mess you up a bit? Who knows?
00:16:48
Speaker
But the point is, we just heard all those scary stories. So of course, we're like, all right, we'll both go to the bathroom, keep each other company. And when were in the bathroom stalls, we heard multiple people walking around in like what, like in the area where you wash your hands, they were just walking around and then tapping on the side of the building.
00:17:12
Speaker
Like it almost felt like there were children tapping on the side of the building and then there were like grown adults just walking around waiting for us to finish using the bathroom essentially. So I didn't think anything of it, but I was freaking out. Like I was a bit like, what the fuck is going on? This is a bit weird.
00:17:28
Speaker
um And I didn't say anything to Katherine because I was like, I'm just in my head. This isn't happening. But it was scary. um And then I remember waiting outside and then Katherine met me outside.
00:17:41
Speaker
And this place is on stilts too. So when someone's walking, it's like that hollow timber, like feet on timber kind of feeling. So it was all very um like classic haunted vibes.
00:17:56
Speaker
So once I got down and Katherine met me outside, we started walking back and I was like, so? And she was like, yep. And I was like, all right. you So you also heard the people walking around in the toilet stall? And she was like, certainly did. And I was like, and you heard like what sound like little kids like being on the side of the building? And she was like, certainly did. And I was like, that's scary.
00:18:18
Speaker
So we kind of ended up running back a little bit because it was scary. And then we had our friends there and we absolutely berated them because we thought that they had scared us on purpose, but they were adamant and saying we didn't. And when I look back, I'm like, there was no...
00:18:40
Speaker
There was not enough time for them to run to the bathroom and back and not look sweaty or like puffed out or anything. So yeah, you might recall that story having been told in our episode on ghosts or in our very first episode introduction to this podcast. But I thought I'd tell it again because that's the kind of, those are the kind of experiences we had at our first visit at Woodman Point for a ghost tour.
00:19:07
Speaker
So that was more of a ghost tour. um and soon we'll be going a ghost hunt. So i suppose the difference is we're going to be um learning how to use ghost equipment, um which we can explain. I think Katherine a good sort of rundown of what equipment they used at the Arredale tour in Melbourne.
00:19:33
Speaker
um So it'll be interesting to see what kind of equipment they give us access to um And there's a full hour where we get to just go off on our own and try have I don't know, some intelligent conversations with some people who have passed. So maybe we get we'll be able to get in touch with a nurse or a patient who who worked there or maybe someone who passed away who wants to tell their story. But Who knows? We're really like careful not to encourage anything um dark or mean spirited to communicate with us because we kind of experienced that when we went and stayed at a haunted location for two nights and we just will never do that again. And that's another
00:20:20
Speaker
That's a story for another episode. So Katherine and I are working on that. Um, cause we just don't know how to talk about it just yet. Cause it was so terrifying. So we'll get there eventually.
00:20:32
Speaker
In the meantime, um I hope you enjoyed this little tiny tale, this little introduction to Woodman Point. Um, and yeah, you can look forward to, um, another installment of a ghost hunt adventure.
00:20:49
Speaker
Um, that we have there. I can't wait to share that with you. Pray for us. Hopefully it's chill and not terrifying. Until then, enjoy your week and bye for now.
