every club every day the global sports podcast network hello and welcome to the next edition of the daily palace podcast brought to you by the sports global sports podcast network i'm joined today by our usual palace expert dantana how are you doing mate i'm doing all right it's nice to be called an expert in something there isn't much but i'll i'll take that one for the win at least this week and then next week We'll see afterwards, we'll see what happens. Yeah, that's good to go in cautious and then we'll see how the predictions turn out for Saturday's game.

Man City vs Palace: Recent Performances

00:00:38
Speaker
And we're also, as it's crossover Thursday, we're joined by a Man City expert in Jules. How are you doing, mate? Yeah, also nice to be called an expert. Yeah, I'll take that off, Dan. Yeah. and But yeah, indely definitely a better than we have been in most recent times for both of us, I assume.
00:00:57
Speaker
Yeah, that's right, mate. It's a pair of midweek victories for Man City and Palace, which I'm sure has given both of us a lift. and We both came into those fixtures without a victory. Well, Palace on the road, we hadn't had a victory this season. And then you guys, obviously the... and I don't want to mention it too much, but the seven match winless run came to an end with a 3-0 victory over Forrest. So it's a good place to get started, actually, Jules. I just want to ask you really, you know, well that will that victory um sort of give you guys a lift coming into Saturday, do you think? Or do you think there are some underlying issues in the Guardiola?
00:01:37
Speaker
Definitely some underlying issues. You don't um have a team with this amount of quality. when and Go winless for seven games with six losses in that if there wasn't some real issues there you know in terms of squad building and um how the team was playing and confidence. but I think everyone knew there was only a matter of time, right? You can't have a collection of some of the world's best players like that. Yes, Rodry's out. Yes, the squad's thin by design, so it's kind of City's fault as well. But if you have players like Kevin de Bruyne and Harland in the team, surely it's a matter of time. And I think Kev made all the difference. So in answer to your question, um yes, I think it will make a difference, but I don't think City are out of the woods by any means yet.
00:02:21
Speaker
Yeah, it's interesting um that you mentioned De Bruyne there, because there were some question marks about him before the Forest game that I saw, um you know, people questioning his future and his commitment to the the club. But I mean, we'll get on to players a bit later in the pod, but I'm not sure he's a player you can really question his desire and, you know, obviously not his quality. um So what did you what did you make of his performance on Wednesday? Was it a kind of a turning point for him, do you reckon?
00:02:49
Speaker
yeah I think it's purely down to fitness. i think Whenever he's 100% fit, he's fantastic. and he He even said in a post-match interview that he had and that he he wasn't fit for this game. He said he was in agony the whole of the whole game. and and as that As he gets back to full fitness, hopefully he doesn't get another injury. you know He's at the age now where Big injuries in the past, like ACLs, they start to creep up on you and shorten your career span, don't they? And it kind of looks like that is happening. But even a Kev at 70% is someone that's capable of dominating a football match. And I think we've seen that on Wednesday, where he was the man. It all went through him. City he played in such a more fluid and expansive and exciting way, simply because they could play through the lines in a way that without him hasn't happened.
00:03:35
Speaker
Foden should have been that guy, but he's been really sluggish since the Euros, not found his form in the Premier League this year. So, yeah, the return of Kev couldn't come too soon. Yeah, it's a bit of a worry for Palace because, well, I've seen a few games at Celeste in particular where he's torn us apart, so hopefully he's not coming into form just

Crystal Palace's Form and Upcoming Challenges

00:03:56
Speaker
at the right time. And, you know, those fitness issues maybe will come up again on Saturday. You're not the only person to say that. You're not the only football fan to say that, don't worry.
00:04:05
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, it's him and Yaya Tore just like give me nightmares, man. When you guys had him, he he terrorized us as well. But we are palace. We do get terrorized by a lot of people. Dan, we um we obviously had a one nil victory Ipswich on Tuesday.
00:04:22
Speaker
It's our first away win of the season. ah We're in a bit of patchy form, few draws and a couple of losses as well. Do you think that that run or that game against Ipswich will give us confidence going into Saturday? What are your thoughts? I definitely think it will give us confidence, especially the one against Ipswich and the one against Newcastle. While we on on the pitch we were dominant in both games, we should have won the Newcastle one considerably more I think I mentioned in the pod on Monday or something that ah they only they didn't have a single shot on goal and they still managed to get a draw. So um that's classic Palace football. But um when we got we got a good we've got a ah good result on against Ipswich, we got it away from home, and largely dominated the game as well. So it should give us a lot of confidence. But you've also got to take into account the fixtures list that we've got over the next three weeks.
00:05:19
Speaker
And after we've got City and then we got Arsenal a couple of times and we got Brighton a couple of times, Brighton as well. So if we we can keep the momentum going, I'll be happy. But it was going up against City that now have gotten their sort of a first winning sort of better part of a month as well. So they're going to be up for it too. So this could be very, very interesting game instant game on the weekend.
00:05:47
Speaker
Yeah, that's right. The the fixtures aren't looking too rosy for us at the moment. um yeah Like you said, Newcastle at home, tough game, managed to get something from it. Ipswich away. They're they're picking off a bit of form. We've come out with three points. This will be a big test for us, no doubt.

Selhurst Park: A Fortress for Palace?

00:06:03
Speaker
um We have improved recently, um but Man City at home, after they've just you know comfortably beaten Nottingham Forest,
00:06:12
Speaker
who are a really good side this season is going to be going to be tricky for us. um Jules, what are your thoughts on on coming to Selhurst Park? um you know a lot of A lot of teams say it's a tough place to come and play, but what are your kind of feelings about you know this fixture and and playing at Selhurst Park? I don't think Palace have ever been an easy team to play home or away, but at Selhurst particularly. and City obviously have a pretty strong record at Selhurst Park and you guys are pretty good at at at the Etihad, which is weird. but and I don't think there's many teams in world football that have a good record as you guys at the Etihad. In the last six, you've only lost twice, which doesn't sound that good, but it really is at the Etihad, isn't it? and Yeah. So, Selhurst Park, City unbeaten there in the last nine games, ah winning seven of them.
00:07:03
Speaker
But it's never never an easy match, absolutely. um Just got to look through the last five or six years, see some of the great moments. Elise again, a 95th minute equalizer and ah that Androf's Town Z goal was fun fantastic as well. And I'm sure anyone listening to this podcast has seen that goal, but if you haven't, go watch it immediately because oh my God, amazing. From the city side as well, we you know need to see what we're watching out for.
00:07:28
Speaker
We have mentioned that goal many, many times. that We know all about it. Or maybe I need to just push the city guys towards it as well, then so they don't miss out too. five yeah I think a confident city and shouldn't be afraid of going to any any ground in world football. um So it's just a case of whether that consistency will stay. If we can play anywhere near as good as Wednesday, then yeah, of course, our back city to win. but you know You guys have got your tails up a bit at the moment too. So yeah, it could be and could be a really pivotal game and ah for the for the how the rest of the season goes with both teams. so
00:08:06
Speaker
Yeah, you're absolutely right there. It is a big game for both teams and it's hopefully a turning point. Well, it might be a turning point for one of us and maybe not so much for the others. But um yeah, we'll find out on Saturday ah how it pans out. We're just going to take a quick break and then we'll be back after that to discuss some of the key players coming up in this fixture.

Hello and welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast. This is a special crossover episode, so I'm joined by Jules from the Daily Man City team and Dan Tanner, the usual Palace ah host and panelist for us.

Key Players Spotlight: Man City

00:09:08
Speaker
ah So we we just discussed ah how how it's looking for both teams in terms of form.
00:09:13
Speaker
um but We also we touched on Kevin De Bruyne as well there as ah as potentially a key player for Man City. um But is there anyone else, Jules, who you want to put in a good performance or you'd like to build on a good performance from Wednesday? Who stands out in your mind? I've got two, if you'll indulge me. There's ah one we've been dying for Jeremy Darko to play as well as he had done on Wednesday for about about 12 months, to be honest.
00:09:40
Speaker
Because when he's on it, oh my God, what a player. You can't stop him. He's too quick. His feet are too quick. But then he gets into the final third and he lacks that composure. But then it it just all clicked. I think it felt like he had nothing to lose on Wednesday because he'd been in and out of the team, injuries. And Mateus Nunez had been starting left wing, which a lot of City fans would think is quite outrageous with ah with the quality in the squad. So Doc, who's come in and taken his chance fantastically on Wednesday, got the assist for Kev's goal and then a brilliant goal himself.
00:10:09
Speaker
So if he can maintain consistency, which he hasn't really done in the city shirt yet, then yeah, I think he, he'll terrorize anyone that he's up against. It would be Munoz you're right back. He'd be up against, right. Well, who I suppose has quite buoyed himself over the last week. So yeah, could have two informed players going up against each other. Yeah. I just want to say Munoz, that was amazing that you got that goal so late after he should have got to well before that, shouldn't he? So you could really feel the.
00:10:36
Speaker
the adrenaline pumping in his veins when he got that at the end, but yeah, anyway. i ah Jack Relish is the other one. He played centrally for the first time this season on Wednesday. And I think we all know if you know you guys sound English, I'm sure your England fans as well, he's way better. He's way better in the middle, isn't he? He can affect the game so much more. He was allowed to float all over the pitch and control the ball when he needed to or create when he needed to. He feels quite isolated when he's out on the left. and He feels like he doesn't quite have the pace to get past some players sometimes. So yeah.
00:11:06
Speaker
If I assume Papel picked the same team again, why would you want to risk not doing so after winning in for the first time in an eternity? So yeah, if we can get Grealish back in the middle and doing really good stuff and then Daku can play anywhere near as good as Wednesday, then yeah, there are definitely two to watch out for.
00:11:24
Speaker
Yeah, good good picks, I think, Docu. As a casual observer

Key Players Spotlight: Crystal Palace

00:11:29
Speaker
of City, just unbelievable player, like the talent that he's got is incredible. He does remind me a bit of Alise in the way that he can ghost pass people, you know, like they're not even there. um But his his end product maybe is lacking a little bit.
00:11:43
Speaker
Grealish as well, man, like, yeah, don't know what's happened to him, like, what has Pep done to him? He's just, yeah, like for Villa, that's where all his success came, like he said, through the middle and just playing a bit of a free free role, but he's perhaps been coached out of that a little bit. I would i would like to also say that um it is hard to get in outdoors positions when he got Bernardo Silva, Kev De Bruyne and Foden competing, so I think He probably is the worst of those four players, really, if you have to, which is no slight on him because we're talking about elite footballers here. But he did the same with Bernardo, shoving him out right um to cut inside and kind of control the game. I think he likes having technical midfielders out wide ah to create a numerical advantage in the middle. And it did work in the travel season. But when when it's not not all going well, he does look like a
00:12:34
Speaker
a full on figure by himself out there, doesn't he? Anyway. Yeah. Yeah, you're right. Yeah, he does. um Yeah. And he's a confidence player, isn't he? You can tell yeah but if he gets a goal or an assist, he's tails up and he's, ah yeah, he's unplayable on his day.
00:12:49
Speaker
Dan, from talking about more controlled football of City to the more harem, scarum, direct play of Palace, um is there anyone... and Obviously, Mateta got his goal at Ipswich, where he bullied the Ipswich defence and slammed it into the net, which um classic John Philippe that. um But is there anyone else, or or does Mateta sort of stand out as a key player for us in this game?
00:13:17
Speaker
Matata's definitely going to be one of the key players. He's now on form. He's got a goal, so he's going to be up for it. But I don't think he's going to be able to bully the Man City defence as well as he did against Ipswich. They are not going to give him an inch. He's going to have to work for every blade of grass. i Same way, Eze is probably going to have to... He's another one that's going to be one of our key players, which yeah again again, he had a nice game against Ipswich.
00:13:44
Speaker
um got the assist, got a nice sort of pass for Mateta's goal. ah But being the technical player, he's going to be having to fight off um a lot of fairly physical man city players, especially in that central midfield, because he kind of likes to move around quite a bit. So they're going to be the ones up front. And in the defense, it's got to be Gay. He he's has to be that the back there Backfield general almost he's gonna have to deal with one of the sort of freaks of nature when it comes to sort of center forwards so they're gonna have to work as an absolute sort of a team to kind of corral him and Henderson has got to work get lucky again like he did against ah it switch and it's off even to a point against Newcastle a couple of times and
00:14:36
Speaker
So those would be my key players or and sort of against City, but these guys are going to have to work like they've never worked before against the City that is going to be raring to go. They've got their first win in a bit and they're going to be absolutely up for this.
00:14:53
Speaker
Yes, spot on. um I think our defence will be caught under the microscope on Saturday, and we have had a few mistakes in us this season, um which have cost us maybe five or six goals throughout the campaign, which is a bit of a worry. We were good against Ipswich, like Daniel mentioned earlier in the pod, against Newcastle, didn't concede a shot on target. But this will be a different challenge, and we do have have to be on it. And I think Gehi is the one who will try and marshal us through this game.
00:15:22
Speaker
I love him, by the way. I think he's amazing, isn't he? He is great. He is a top quality Santa bag. I think I've really started to grow. He's started to grow on me the last couple of years since he made his England debut and everything. He started to really announce himself on the world stage. So as's like it's it's nice that it's coming from Palace for a change. yeah we we' got it all He's got it all, I think.
00:15:45
Speaker
Yeah, we're enjoying him while we've got him anyway. ah So Jules, I just wanted to ask you about

Haaland's Form and Match Impact

00:15:51
Speaker
Harlan. Dan sort of t teased him there, the freak of nature. um a He hasn't scored in three of his last four games, but against Palace he's scored five in three Premier League appearances, which is grim reading for us. I'm probably only kind of middling to what his Premier League record against teams is, right, as well.
00:16:12
Speaker
Yeah, it's not even the worst, which you know is is a massive relief. But you know he if he he hasn't scored in those three games out of the last four, um just from a city perspective, like is that an out of form Harland or is it he's contributing in other ways? What's what's going on? with them There's been moments throughout the season where he looks like he is going to contribute more. But then over this run,
00:16:35
Speaker
and ah He has looked really isolated, um but ah he's he's someone that needs um service, right? Like, as all strikers do, but especially when he's playing so high up where he he's pinning the other centre-backs back, if Pep doesn't really want him to drop deep. You know, I don't think he wants him to be a complete forward. He wants him to be on the last line and pin the centre-backs backs to to ah create the space for the the bunch of technical midfielders that City have.
00:17:03
Speaker
But Harland, I think even when he plays badly, he can score three. And I don't think his actual game has changed all that match, you know, but he just puts the ball on the back of the net. and He's so good that he can play bad and still then still score. But yeah, that that matchup against Mark Waehe is definitely going to be the one. other Other defenders have had their day with him this year, you know? So it's not it's definitely not impossible. But I think with the service there, it makes him a hell of a lot more dangerous. With Kev there, and if Dokku is firing, then yeah, I think Henderson is going to be a busy man.
00:17:35
Speaker
Yeah, I do agree with you, but grudgingly, I think we are we will be up against it.

Match Predictions and Strategies

00:17:41
Speaker
It'll be backs against the wall for us, I think, especially you guys coming into this game of confidence. um So we're just going to take one last break and then we'll come back and do our score predictions for Saturday's game.
00:17:54

Hey, welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast. I'm still here with Dan Turner and Jules from the Daily Man City Pod. um And we're just gonna close out this this um episode by giving our score predictions. um So Dan, we'll we'll come to you first as as the home team. We'll try and get something in but before Jules has his pop. But what what do you reckon the score will be here? Do you reckon we'll come away with something or um will it be a ah tough day at the office for us?
00:18:50
Speaker
I think it's going to be a tough day at the office. I can't see it really being anything other than sort of being sitting back and having to defend for most of it and had to try and get ah but a counter-attack goal, which we are quite good at in the last couple of weeks. So um we might be able to nick something, especially if like a city kind of start cruising and they kind of start giving away sort of very silly little passes like they've won against Forrest where ah you would have put your house on wood scoring that one. um So if cities start in cruise control, we might be able to nick something, but I really don't see it. I think it's probably going to be 3-1 city. I think we might be able to nick something, but it's the way that we defend in that zonal marking system and against the big teams like earlier in the season against Liverpool where Jota could have had four before halftime.
00:19:47
Speaker
and Man man United tore us apart and luckily we got away with a nil-nil in that one. So with that solo marking, I think we probably will concede at least a couple, ah but it's going to be a smog pretty much the entire game.
00:20:05
Speaker
Yeah, I think it's going to be a bit of a tricky day at the office for us for sure. um Yeah, I can see this one go in one of two ways, like there could be a lot of goals, could be end to end. We like the high press and that could open us up to some some abuse at the back, but um it's it's a good test to see where we are because we have improved recently and we've cut out some of those defensive mistakes. um But a team like City, if you drop for one second, they're going to punish us. So yeah, i'm I'm a bit on the fence with this one, but obviously I'll take anything that we could get against City at home. um Jules, we'll come to you. How do you see this one panning out on Saturday?
00:20:45
Speaker
Um, I see it pretty much as Dan said, I think it'll be, I think it'll be three one, but ah I don't think it'll necessarily be a blowout city of, uh, struggled at the start of games throughout the season. Only, uh, only four clean sheets in the premier league this year might even be three.
00:21:00
Speaker
So um the opportunities will be there for you guys to score. Your attack has been the weakest part of ah you at so far this season. Only 18 goals conceded, which is less than City, by the way. But I think up front is where you've been struggling, isn't it? Where Aze hasn't really been able to take all the burden of Alise leaving by himself. Kamada has not done anywhere near as much as he looked like he was going to as well, because I thought he was a very good player at Frankfurt anyway.
00:21:29
Speaker
so I don't think you'll have enough in the tank to score more than one, but I do see Mateta probably getting one. And I do think that with Kev back City will be able to create enough chances to get three goals, I think. So three, one City.
00:21:44
Speaker
Yeah, I think that's ah yeah a fair shout-out all-round free one. um I'm going to go for a one-all just to try and bring something to to the Palace listeners to to cling on to. A little bit of optimism, yeah. It's totally doable. totally doable. This isn't the same city. like Yes, they played well against Forrest in midweek, but for the last month and a half, like you know every team has nearly outplayed them. We all created more chances. or capitalized on mistakes so it's that it it is there for the taking if you guys are if you guys are about like nineteen ninety five percent you'll have opportunities and you know that's all it that's all it takes sometimes so
00:22:24
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, we do this season alone as well. Like we've drawn with United at home. ah Liverpool was 1-0, but we had chances to to get back into that game. A couple of great saves from Kelleher towards the end, kept them in it really. And like we do we do so tend to go for it at home against the bigger teams, which um I don't know whether that's a good or a bad thing, but it it sometimes pays off. um But I think after your result in midweek, I struggled to see us coming away with this. I think you'll be up for it. I think Pep will iron and out a few mistakes and use this as a building block.
00:22:59
Speaker
um So, yeah, I'm not massively optimistic about my one or even, but we'll see what happens.

Closing Remarks and Thanks

00:23:07
